Dates for your diary For you: Calendars, Personalised Greetings Cards & Canvas Prints. For your business: Leaflets & Flyers, PVC Banners, Posters, Outdoor Signage and lots more!
There are a number of events happening in East Grinstead during November that are regular features in the calendar marking out our year. Remembrance Sunday 12th November will see the town coming together for a parade commencing in King Street at 10:30 followed by a service at the War Memorial in the High Street at 11am. And because the lyrics to the famous Christmas carol ‘Good King Wenceslas’ were written in East Grinstead, we do Christmas rather well! We think it’s never too early to start the festivities. Friday 17th November 4pm to 8pm, The Big Reveal. The very creative High Street Traders reveal their festive windows. This has become a much anticipated magical event with crowds of people eagerly waiting for the countdown to begin and the brown paper coverings to be ripped away. Come to the High Street from 4pm to see what those artistic shop keepers have come up with. This year the High Street will be closed to traffic from 4pm to 8pm and there will be entertainment and late night shopping.

CHOCOLATE TORTE WITH PEANUT SORBET & BLACKBERRY SAUCECONTINUED
Sift the cocoa powder into the egg yolks and mix well. Gently fold the meringue into the egg yolk and cocoa powder mixture a third at a time. Spread evenly into a shallow, paper-lined baking tray so the sponge mix is approximately 1cm thick. Bake for 5-8 minutes in the preheated oven until it starts to come away from the edges of the tray. Remove from the oven and sprinkle with caster sugar. Turn onto a cooling rack and remove the paper while still warm. Glaze Start the glaze by soaking the gelatine in cold water. Combine the water, caster sugar, cocoa powder and cream and bring to the boil. Remove from the heat. Remove the gelatine from the water and squeeze out any excess. Add to the hot cream mixture and whisk until combined. Strain the mixture into a pouring jug and leave in a warm place as it will be used to coat the sponge at a later stage. Sorbet For the sorbet, combine the water, sugar and glucose in a saucepan and bring to the boil. Remove from the heat and set aside to cool. Once the syrup has cooled, combine with the peanuts in a blender and blitz until smooth. Pass through a fine strainer. Churn in an ice
cream machine until desired consistency is reached. For the blackberry sauce, combine the sugar and water in a saucepan and bring to 104˚C. Add the blackberries and remove from the heat. Leave to sit for thirty minutes before pushing through a fine chinois or sieve. Refrigerate until ready for use. Assembly To assemble, cut the sponge into two evenly sized pieces. Place half the sponge into a second tray that has been lined with cling film. Pour over half the chocolate mousse. Place the remaining sponge on top of the mousse and then spread the remaining mousse on top, before chilling in the freezer until firm. Remove from the freezer and cut into 1.5 cm x 5 cm pieces. Place the pieces onto a cooling rack with a tray underneath. Coat with the glaze using a ladle and leave to set in the fridge for at least two hours. Plate with the peanut butter sorbet and blackberry sauce. Ashdown Park Hotel & Country Club Wych Cross, RH18 5JR

Dear Sariah, I have recently got engaged and would like to have the wedding of my dreams. My fiancé wants to have a tiny, low key wedding and put any savings made towards a deposit for a house. I understand his view but I just feel that all my friends are having the most amazing days of their life with an incredible wedding and he wants us to go quietly to a registry office with a few family members and friends. I’m not sure how to approach this. - Ms. W Firstly, congratulations on your engagement. It’s an exciting time for you both but can often be accompanied by a lot of wedding planning stress, especially if you both have different ideas of the sort of wedding it should be. Have a little planning meeting. Both write a list of things that you feel are important to each of you, things that you wouldn’t want the wedding to be without and things that perhaps things that aren’t so important and you could omit and then look at how you can meet in the middle. Somewhere between the big wedding and registry office. Let him know that you need more than a small ceremony in the registry office but that you appreciate his concerns about money. If your fiancé’s concerns stem only from the cost of a wedding, look at a budget that
Dear Sariah, I am in my 50s and my husband and I recently split up. He has moved on and our relationship is irreparable. I have started internet dating but it seems very scary and so far, I've frankly not enjoyed it. So, thinking of packing it in but then I am worried I will never meet someone as I have little time to go out socialising. I am being encouraged to keep up with the online dating by friends for whom it has worked, but it's a bit of a drag and distraction from the kids. you could both live with, agree it, and then stick to it. With elaborate weddings costing an average of £27,000, it’s understandable that he is anxious about the money, but there are some fabulous money saving tips that will help you plan the most perfect of days without a price tag to match, if you are willing to put in a bit of DIY effort. Pinterest has the most amazing ideas for homemade invitations, table centres and decorations. Get your friends and family involved. Who’s the cake maker in your circle? Can you assemble a team from those who love you who will take on the food? Is there someone with a creative hand who could put together some amazing flower arrangements? A fantastic website, www.hitched.co.uk gives some amazing ideas on how to host the perfect wedding for £3,000. Be realistic about what you can afford and don’t compare the weddings of your friends to the special day that you can both create. A lower budget wedding can be every bit as special, and is often more so because it is so personal, than a wedding organised with an endless money pot and allows a couple to really show their personalities. I wish you the very best of days. And remember, at the centre of the wedding is a couple who love each other. Just with that, your day will be pretty perfect. experience that brings lots of anxiety. Don’t feel pressurised in to continuing with it if it makes you feel uncomfortable. I know that this is the modern angle on meeting new people but sometimes, the old-fashioned way still has its place. You say that you don’t have much time to go socialising but perhaps, somewhere in your busy schedule, you can find some time to just focus on you. Rather than focusing on meeting that new Mr Right, perhaps you could focus on doing something that will be of real interest to you; an art class or some ballroom dancing or even joining a gym for example. Take the spotlight off the dating scene and go and have some fun. And who knows, perhaps he’s just waiting for you to sign up!!

DEAR SARIAH... CONTINUED
Dear Sariah, My son has recently finished his A levels and decided not to further his education. He has got a low paid job so he is working, but it's part time. He seems to be aimless and not at all motivated. It is also difficult to get him to contribute at all to the household. He doesn't know what he wants to do with his life and is just 'living for the weekend'. I go from thinking I should sit him down for a big 'talk' to just letting him get on with it even though it's painful to watch. Help! - Mrs B.
It can be very difficult to motivate older children to get busy when they appear to be lacking any inspiration for their future. I think it’s ok that after the hard work that is put in to studying A levels, a little down time whilst your son attempts to figure out where he goes from here is expected. However, it could be very easy to fall in to a relaxed lifestyle; work a little, play a little and not do very much in between and that shouldn’t be encouraged. I think having a very informal chat with your son might be a good place to start. Don’t make it in to a big deal initially. Perhaps suggest a walk or dinner and talk with him about the things that he likes to do and perhaps how he sees himself in 5 years’ time. It might be beneficial to talk about the realities of becoming an adult and how that involves certain responsibilities, such as going to work and paying their way. If he doesn’t really know which way he is headed www.prospects. ac.uk/careers-advice is a good place to start. It gives some good advice on how to find jobs in areas that might be of interest to him. Perhaps you could encourage him to look for some volunteering work in a field that might be of interest to see if it sparks something in him. Give him some options to think over; looking for full time work, carry on with his part time work whilst investigating a longer-term plan or do some work experience somewhere that he might be interested in. Make sure he understands that working part time and sitting in his room the rest of the week waiting to spend all his money at the weekend isn’t an option. It’s important that if he is working, even part time, that he contribute to the household purse. It’s entirely acceptable to support young adults when they are in full time education or are actively looking for full time employment but if they’re not doing either, it’s probably an appropriate time to let him know that you expect him to contribute. A 10% or 20% contribution (whichever you are happy with) from his wage will teach him good money management and may help his enthusiasm for earning more from full time work. Give him a start date, say a month or so, to make some plans and then let him know that you’ll expect his rent then. The responsibility of paying rent from his own salary is an excellent way for him to feel like a contributing adult in the home which will boost his self-confidence. I wish him lots of luck.

LOCAL NEWS STORIES Sackville’s Observatory continues town's tradition of Star Gazing.
Imberhorne's Sachin Bhangra, Year 13, entered a prospective student essay competition over the Summer for the University of Cambridge. The task was to respond to the question: If you could take one item, which must fit in your pocket, back in time with the goal of advancing science or medicine, what would it be, where would you go, and what would you do with it? Sachin wrote an insightful piece on how he would seek to eradicate doping in sport with his choice of item to take back in time. His essay was 'Highly Commended' and he was invited to receive a prestigious prize at the University of Cambridge. At the presentation however, Sachin was in fact awarded with first place!
There are regular observatory open evenings throughout the school year hosted by Sackville, where students are joined by guests from their feeder primary schools among others. Last month the clouds parted just in time for the some spectacular views of the harvest moon: the first full moon after the autumnal equinox. Stargazers were also able to see a transit of the International Space Station. Regular open evenings will be held between 7-9pm on the following dates: Wednesday 1st November, Wednesday 6th December, Wednesday 17th January, Wednesday 21st February, Wednesday 21st March. As always, check on Facebook to make sure the open evenings are on as they are all weather dependent. Amazing shot of the High Street! Taken last month, when it was bathed in the strangest light. With thanks to Louise Lucas of the Colour Suite, a creative design service based in the High Street, www. thecoloursuite.co.uk. Imberhorne Siblings, Megan Rothwell (Year 12) and Louis Rothwell (Year 8), who competed at a national judo ranking on 23rd September taking gold and silver in their categories respectively. Both siblings hope to be in the GB team next year! Watch this space.

KITCHEN BESPOKE'S MOVING UP
Rachael has found that being a female designer gives her an edge: “I design from a practical view point. Most people who use kitchens are women and I can relate to the need to balance aesthetics with function”. She works to her client’s budget requirements and is always testing new products and materials to see what works, saving time and money for her customers.
Last month, Kitchens Bespoke marked their 10th year of successful trading in East Grinstead by taking a grand leap of expansion and moving up the London Road to larger premises. The newly opened shop will give those looking for a kitchen from a local, quality company a greater choice of products to view, showcasing the latest designs. You can also find fabulous new appliances and accessories, as well as a new fitted bedroom furniture range.
The word ‘bespoke’ refers to the design process itself and Rachael says that their kitchens are more affordable than you might think.
Kitchens Bespoke is originally the brainchild of Rachael Workman who has been a kitchen designer for over 20 years now. Ten years ago she decided to set up her own ‘one stop shop’ to help clients create their perfect kitchen, that suit their budgets; she has not looked back since. The success of this venture meant her husband, Guy, joined her a couple of years later to create what is now a well-established, local family-run business.
Along with an uncompromising dedication to quality, Rachael & Guy's ethos is based on a friendly, personal approach; offering an individual service with every project undertaken (large or small), so the project itself runs smoothly from beginning to end.
If you are thinking of improving your kitchen, then feel free to pop in for an informal, friendly chat and to take a look at some of the quality products on show. You will get ideas as well as guidance and advice. Investing in a good kitchen is the single most valuable improvement you can make to your home. It’s the one room that can really stand out as an aspirational showpiece for your property. COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY

Beacons & Bonfires LOCAL HISTORY NOTES by Dorothy Hatswell of the East Grinstead Museum
Bonfires get their name from bone fire. Bones were burnt in graveyards on November 1st the Feast of Samhain, to ward off evil spirits. Today the word is applied to any controlled fire outside. November is of course the month when bonfires are most common in this country. Many are dedicated to celebrating the failure of Guy Fawkes, who with his fellow conspirators in 1605, tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament. They were discovered, but the plot would have failed anyway, as the thirty-six barrels of gunpowder they had, would have only caused comparatively minor damage.
November bonfires are also common in a domestic setting, as it is a good way of disposing of the fallen leaves at this time of year. Laurence Binyon says in his poem: “Now is the time for the burning of the leaves, They go into the fire; the nostril pricks with smoke Wandering slowly into a weeping mist. Brittle and blotched, ragged and rotten sheaves! A flame seizes the smouldering ruin and bites On stubborn stalks that crackle as they resist.” However, this practice has become less common now, due to the impact on environmental and health issues.
“Remember, remember, the Fifth of November, Gunpowder, treason and plot,”
Bonfires are also used as celebrations of local and national events. Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee was commemorated with the lighting of a huge fire in 1897 and in 2002, her great granddaughter, Queen Elizabeth’s Golden Jubilee was marked in a similar way all over the country. In Northern Ireland, bonfires are lit on July 12th, to commemorate the Battle of the Boyne. In America, bonfires are used as beacons to guide Pere Noel to the right place. Hundreds are lit along the Mississippi river on Christmas Eve.
On top of the fire traditionally, an effigy of Guy Fawkes himself, is burned, but other unpopular figures have also been, chosen for this purpose. Margaret Thatcher and the renowned warden of Sackville College, the Rev John Mason Neale were both objects of the people’s anger at various times. Previously most were small events in people’s back gardens but the expense of fireworks and the dangers of the close proximity of explosive material have meant a rise in the number of people attending organised events, where for a comparatively small fee, the whole family can safely enjoy a lavish display.
Beacons usually have a more serious purpose than this. They have been used from ancient times to warn of danger. They are said to have originated in 3rd century BC in ancient Greece. By lighting a beacon on high ground and relaying the message to the next high point and so on, news of an invasion or attack could be quickly conveyed over quite large distances. There are numerous places when the device has been used. On the Scottish Borders they gave warnings of an attack by the English. The Brecon Beacons in Wales are
Oxfordshire, boys would go “a’progging”, that is stealing wood to add to their bonfire. They had their own traditional rhyme, “A stick, a stake For King James’s sake. If you won’t give me one, I’llCOMMUNITY take two. BUSINESS DIRECTORY The better for me and the better for you.”

BEACONS & BONFIRES CONTINUED
so named, because they were used to warn of marauding Englishmen from across the border and the story of the warning of the approach of the Spanish Armada is well documented. The Great Wall of China was also used as a site for beacons. In the Lord of the Rings, the Kingdom of Gondor was alerted by the lighting of beacons. Lighthouses are beacons warning shipping of the dangers of the sea and coast. Beacons are also used celebrations. The Queen’s 90th birthday was marked in this way. The then Transport Minister, Lesley HoreBelisha, introduced flashing amber lights on black and white striped poles to alert motorists to the crossings, giving them time to slow down and stop. They are also used for pointing out other situations in which a careful approach is required, for example outside schools.
Beacons today often take the form of electronic devices. They are widely used to flag up items on the internet and recently Gatwick Airport introduced 2000 to make it easier for passengers to navigate their way around the airport, when their own phones cannot pick up satellite signals. This is augmented wayfinding for passengers - a world first for an airport. The light from a beacon has become a universal symbol of hope and future success, health and prosperity.

Standen: An Art & Craft Beacon Wallpaper and Fabric Designers, Peter Thwaites and Rebecca Aird, have created a collection of modern hand-printed fabrics and wallpapers for Standen. The National Trust's contemporary arts programme, Trust New Art, which has been running throughout the year enabled this project to occur. Reflecting the Arts & Crafts ethos of Standen’s architect Philip Webb and world famous textile designer William Morris (whose designs can be seen in many of the rooms) the two have created 3 wallpaper & fabric designs. The Arts & Craft view on design, where only the best craftsmanship and materials are selected (popular in 1894 when Standen was built), are comparative to the principles of Peter and Rebecca’s studio which is a reason they were chosen for these new designs.
Back in May, the newly opened Servants’ Hall became a ‘design studio’; for staff, volunteers and visitors to get together and discuss ideas and techniques for this process. The artists collected stories and images, engaging the public to feed into the design process. The bespoke collection is now fully evolved and in situ; the wallpaper in the servants wing
and the textiles in various rooms throughout the house. The Arts & Crafts movement was one of the most influential design movements of modern times, it began in Britain in the 1880s, advocating a revival of traditional handicrafts. Non-conformist and socially progressive, the philosophy and ethos of the Arts & Crafts movement chimed with the Beales’ own political and societal values and they sought out the best architect to design their country retreat, Standen House & Garden. Standen is a superb testament to this pioneering movement which placed the quality of design and materials in highest regard and rejected 'mass production'. The designs can be seen throughout Autumn and Winter until to Saturday 31st March 2018.

Chernobyl: How we still help
Here in Mid Sussex, the branch of Friends of Chernobyl’s Children has been based in Horsted Keynes since 2001. Each summer we bring a group of 15 Belarusian children, from the area worst affected by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster of 1986, to spend a month here in this area. Our aim is to support their often depleted immune systems by giving them some respite from the ongoing terrible pollution, as well as alleviating the severe poverty they and their families face day to day. Most people in the UK are totally unaware that many families on the edge of Europe still live in wooden homes with no running water or indoor sanitation, despite extreme winter temperatures. Whole families are frequently housed in a single hostel room, with very basic and poorly maintained cooking and bathing facilities, shared with many other residents.
environment, healthy food and a comfy bed. Evenings and weekends are also spent with their hosts, but during the week the children attend a daily activity programme, meeting each morning at the Martindale centre in Horsted Keynes. The emphasis is on plenty of fresh air and good fun, with activities such as swimming, camping and trips to the sea. The kind of pastimes that most of our UK children love and take for granted, but that these children seldom, if ever experience. The children also receive dental and optical checks, and at the end of the month the children return home with bags full of clothing, shoes, gifts and vitamins that greatly assist their families back in Belarus.
Unlike other charities these children will not remain unfamiliar little strangers from a distant part of the world, as we aim to bring each child for 4 consecutive years, between the ages of 7-12, allowing a really strong relationship to develop between the families here and in Belarus. There are also huge benefits for our own young people to learn that not all children are as privileged as they are. Furthermore, we undertake a week-long visit to Belarus each autumn to maintain and strengthen these relationships, both with the current and older children, as well as monitoring ongoing living conditions and identifying potential new children for the coming years. If you would like to find out more about how you could help restore hope to a struggling Belarusian child and their family, please contact Sheila Nash by phone on 01825 790295 or by email at foccmidsussex@gmail.com.
Whilst here, the children stay with local host families COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY who provide them with a loving, welcoming home Living living

Crawling Back from the Brink were carrying out ecological monitoring of heathland at Clumber Park. Diamond Spiders are a species of Philodromidae, a family of spiders commonly known as philodromid crab spiders. Philodromids are predatory and live on plant stems and leaves, they inject their prey with venom. However, they are not considered harmful to humans. The last recorded sightings of the Diamond Spider occurred here in the Ashdown Forest area at Legsheath, all the way back in 1930 and Duddleswell in 1969. They were thought extinct on these Isles, that was until last month, when it was spotted as far north from here as Nottinghamshire! However this rarest of spiders had only been recorded in the UK on three previous occasions; all of them in the South of England and two in this specific area. So if it is making a comeback, it's only a matter of time before it makes an appearance in our neck of the woods. The arachnid, known for its diamond-shaped black markings on its back, was found by two astonished National Trust volunteers who
The species is widespread in western and central Europe. PUNK ROCK FLASH MOB APPEAR AT EAST COURT After the success of the “On The Buses” photoshoot earlier on this year, Gino Cinganelli and Stephanie Sceal were asked back by the Town Council to come along to another special town event.
characters included 'Deanna St Omer', an actress who brought along a zimmer frame and her very own carer. Intriguingly, the punk team 'held' their own special council meeting to create some new council policies and with the help of the vicar hope to get some passed!
1st October was the date set to give another huge and fun impression to the local public, during FEast Grinstead at East Court.
After the meeting the Punk Rockers team had a few photos outside with the mayor, then headed off for a break to the children's park to have some real fun.
A gang of aged punk rockers were 'unleashed' on the council offices, led by actor Bob Broad as 'Bob The Brutal' who portrayed an old punk with Green Mohawk hair, lip and nose piercings and a walking stick. Other
Keep an eye out for another of Gino's fun 'flash mobs' in the months to come!

Repair for more Wear Last month the first Forest Row Repair Cafe officially opened its doors to the community with a team of 14 volunteer experts and helpers. The cafe is a place which people can bring their broken things to fix, a vast range of items can be catered for from bikes to an iron, clothes to lawnmowers. The inaugural cafe proved very popular and received lots of positive feedback; the buzz in the room was very encouraging. They were also supported by local businesses who donated goods to use in the cafĂŠ to keep the volunteers and visitors refreshed and fed. This exciting new Forest Row venture is being run by the Parish Council as a way to try and stop so many items simply being thrown away rather than fixed, especially when it can be something simple! The idea originated in Amsterdam in 2009 and their successful model has now spread across the world with over 1,300 Repair Cafes now regularly running, with 45 here in the UK.
The wonderful volunteer experts have knowledge of electrical items, bikes, computers, watches, clocks, general maintenance, woodwork and a fabulous team of seamstresses with a vast knowledge of all things sewing, knitting and mending. So, if your jeans need patching, your clock has stopped working or you just have no idea why your kettle won't boil, bring them to see if they are 'fixable' . While you sit and learn a new skill with your repairer, the Repair Cafe will also have homemade cakes and refreshments for sale to those attending to enjoy.
The next Repair CafĂŠ is on Saturday November 4th at the Community Centre from 10 till 1pm (registration of items will close at 12.30 to allow time for your item to be fixed). The goal is for the cafe to become a monthly vibrant and fun place to visit with members of the community getting involved and supporting their local environment and ultimately the planet. If you would like to get involved, if you have a skill you would like to share, please get in touch. They also need bake-a-cakers too! If you have any questions please call Sara Smart on 01342 822661, email repaircafe@forestrow.gov. uk . Please see the Facebook page www.facebook.com/ reapaircafeforestrow for updates and lists of which experts will be at each session. There is also a page on www.forestrow.gov.uk to find out more.
