Art & Standen: An Crafts Gem Standen is the National Trust’s Arts and Crafts Movement gem on the outskirts of East Grinstead and was built for the wealthy Beale family at the end of the nineteenth century. James Beale was a prosperous London solicitor. He chose as his architect one of William Morris’s closest friends and colleagues, Phillip Webb. Webb built little because he built with such care. Indeed Standen is the finest surviving example of his architectural work and a testament to his love of craftsmanship and the use of vernacular materials. Webb carefully preserved the existing old buildings on site and made them the main starting point for his new house. Standen is built from sandstone quarried from the garden, local bricks and tiles, and features oak weatherboarding and a rendered water tower giving sweeping views over the Medway Valley. It is the Morris interiors for which Standen is now best known and throughout the house are some of his most famous designs in wallpapers, textiles and carpets. At

the forefront of the Arts and Crafts Movement William Morris and his like-minded contemporaries designed with the ideals of beauty, simplicity and utility very much in mind. Standen was, of course, home to James, Margaret and their seven children from 1894 until 1901, when the children began marrying and moving away to set up their own homes. For the next 70 years, however, Standen remained the focus of family life to which the younger Beales’ brought their own burgeoning families (nineteen grandchildren in all!) for summer holidays and Christmas. 1936 at the age of 89, she left her spinster daughters Maggie and Helen to look after Standen. The two sisters devoted much of their time to local good works; Maggie founded a home for the mentally ill in Ashdown Forest and Helen was appointed vice-chairman of the newly enlarged Queen Victoria Hospital. During the war years, in association with the Queen Vic, Standen took in many hospital patients. It was also a sanctuary for those Beale family members bombed out of their London homes and a storeroom for their valued possessions. Standen’s beautiful gardens were turned into a huge vegetable patch. Standen remained in Beale family ownership until it was taken on by the National Trust in 1972. Although best known for the house and its collection, the gardens have always played a crucial part in the enjoyment of Standen, both when a family home, and for the public who now visit. However, over the last 40 years much of the unique style and structure of the garden has been lost with its planting and layout simplified to reduce maintenance costs. Now with funding of £500,000 the gardens will be restored to their former

glory over the next five years, placing them firmly as one of the most important Arts and Crafts gardens in the country alongside more well known places such as Sissinghurst. The restoration of the garden will put back the vision of its creator, Margaret Beale. A great collector of plants, Margaret created a unique garden blending an exotic and colourful planting scheme within a loose Arts and Crafts structure. This Christmas Standen’s gardens are also playing host to a magical evening event. Garden of Lights will see four acres of the gardens lit with thousands of festive lights. Visitors will take a journey through the lit up route and follow the story and music of the Nutcracker. Each area will be lit up to show a different part of the story (see our What’s On for more details).

and tour guiding there’s many different opportunities available.
Keith Hodgson, Room Guide and Garden Tour Guide.
For instance, Standen’s outdoor volunteer team have played a crucial role in the restoration work of the garden so far and there are opportunities to get involved in the Kitchen Garden, woodlands, main gardens or even as a garden guide, to share its story with visitors.
With Volunteering you can also mix and match the varying roles available from gardening to tour guide to visitor experience assistant.
Volunteering your time is a great way to learn new skills, develop your CV, meet new people and expand your horizons. It is the people that make the place come to life and Standen wants to hear from you if you are passionate about heritage and conservation. “I love to be able to give my time to other people and in such wonderful surroundings,” says
Now enjoyed by over 90,000 visitors a year, it is a huge effort to keep Standen open to the public. A fairly modest team of staff is supported by over 300 volunteers who get involved in every aspect of running the property. With major projects getting underway and an increase in opening hours in 2013 Standen is now on the look out for new volunteers to join their friendly team. “We have had a loft conversion done, plus a new driveway and other bits and pieces. I can’t recommend Paul & Ted and the Amdega team highly enough. Every day Paul or Ted would come over to inspect the work and ensure it is completely up to par and on track. Nothing is too much trouble for them and the quality of the workmanship is really high. During the course of the job we’ve had some problems and these were all easily straightened out, good solutions were found and we were given options to choose from. Every day the team left the job clean, tidy and in good order. I’ve been kept well informed throughout the process. We’ve already recommended Amdega Building Services to a few of our friends.” Mr. Hollingsworth, Fairlawn Drive, East Grinstead

preservation, the Queen’s words to him were: “keep up the good work” which, of course, he did. In recent years there was nothing more satisfying for him than to see the continual progress being made in the relentless quest for the line to reach East Grinstead once again. Indeed in 2008 he wrote: “Having served the Bluebell Railway and fathered its progress for so long, it is my dearest wish to see this gap bridged.” At least in his final days he had the knowledge that the infamous Imberhorne cutting had finally been broken through, as the extension shortly reaches its conclusion. © derekhayward.co.uk
Bernard Holden and the four founding students
Many of you will have heard about the passing of Bluebell Railway president Bernard Holden last month. Here we take a brief glimpse at how his long life was inextricably intertwined with the Bluebell Railway:
He always followed Bluebell matters very closely and there is a lot the railway owes to his foresight and initiative. This is why he is now justifiably viewed as the founding father of the Bluebell Railway Line.
Bernard Holden was born in the station house at Barcombe on a part of the Bluebell line that no longer exists. He hailed from a family of stationmasters who had been connected to the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway since 1840, when his great-grandfather began work at its wharf at Shoreham (see photo & caption). The Bluebell Railway began when four young students knocked on Bernard’s door one evening asking for his help in the matter. As fate would have it perhaps, their proposed inaugural meeting date was coincidentally 15th March, Bernard’s birthday. He was invited to chair the meeting which heralded the beginning of the world’s first standard gauge preservation steam railway. Bernard was a British Rail executive at the time and his knowledge, connections and advice were to prove invaluable in the formative years of the line and beyond. In August 1960, steam trains ran between Sheffield Park and Horsted Keynes once again. In 1971, on his retirement from British Rail he became “Superintendent of the Line”. After being involved in various capacities over the years, he finally became president of the ever-popular railway line. He was appointed MBE in 1992 for services to railway
The photo above is from the October 1932 edition of the Southern Railway Magazine, and shows a “Family of Station Masters”. Leaning against the bench at the back of the photo was Bernard J. Holden, MBE, who was at the time a clerk at Grange Road. He was joined in the photograph by four station masters: (from L to R) his grandfather, Charles George Allen Holden (who had started with the LBSCR in late 1860, and retired 31 October 1906 as stationmaster of Hailsham); his father, Charles John Holden of Horley (who joined the Railway on 2 February 1889); and two of his uncles, Arthur Holden of Steyning (joined the LBSCR on 9 December 1893) and Harry Holden of Bexley (who was with the LBSCR from 22 February 1896).

Nobel Prize Winner Supports Imberhorne Sport Hall Fund
Here is some background information about Dr Kohn: Walter Kohn was born on 9th March 1923 in Vienna, Austria to a middle class Jewish family. In 1938, 5 days after the ‘Night of Broken Glass’ in Austria and Germany during which Jews were attacked and their properties ransacked, a delegation of British Jews appealed to the Prime Minister for permission to admit unaccompanied Jewish children into this country. Thus the ‘Kinder transport’ was born and Walter Kohn was one of the children that travelled here. In England, he was taken into the home of a wonderful family who had never seen him before: Charles and Eva Hauff who also welcomed his older sister, Minna. They strongly encouraged him in his studies and in January 1940, his “acting parents” arranged for him to attend East Grinstead County School (now Imberhorne School). Here he concentrated, after a period of uncertainty,
on mathematics, physics and chemistry. In May 1940, at the age of 17, he was arrested as an “enemy alien” (this happened to all holders of “enemy country” passports at that time) and was interned for two months in Britain before being sent to Canada. While in the British camps, his East Grinstead School sent him the books he needed to continue his studies: Shorthouse Mechanics and Mitton Heat published in the 1930’s. He still has them on his shelves and consults them on a rare occasion. Released from internment in January 1942, and with the generous help from a Jewish Canadian family, he studied mathematics and physics at the University of Toronto, and the rest is history. Eventually, in 1998 he received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. His return to his East Grinstead County School (now Imberhorne) is something he’d wanted to do for many years. While his stay as a child in East Grinstead was brief, it was a part of his foundation for a career in science and Dr. Walter admits he cannot imagine he’d have become a scientist without the school’s help. is forging ahead and it is due for completion in July next year. Up to £1.8 million towards the overall cost has been provided by West Sussex County Council and the school’s staff and students are pulling out all the stops to make up the shortfall. With the Imberhorne Walk of Fame, former and current students, members of the community and friends of the school are being given the chance to buy their own personally engraved brick which will be laid in a red brick pathway leading to the centre. We are proud to announce that one of the first bricks has already been ordered by Dr. Walter Kohn! Bright lights in the sky this November? Not fireworks, but a Meteor shower… A meteor shower is a celestial event in which a number of meteors enter the earth’s atmosphere and are observed to radiate from one point in the night sky. In the case of the annual Leonids meteor shower, that point appears to be the constellation ‘Leo’, after which the Leonids are named. The Leonids are caused when the Earth passes through the tail of Comet Temple-Tuttle during it’s annual journey around the Sun. This comet sweeps through our solar system once every 33.2 years. It leaves behind trails that are thousands of miles long, made up of very small particles of dust and ice; they punch into the atmosphere with the same energy as a car hitting at 60 mph! Happily almost all of them disintegrate before they hit the earth’s surface. An annual Leonids shower may deposit 12 or 13 tons of particles
across the entire planet. Meteor showers are usually best viewed during the very early hours of the morning. After watching the dark sky for a while, you should start seeing bright streaks of light as the meteors race across the sky. The amount you see can vary from as few as 3 or 4 an hour to as many as several hundred an hour. The Leonids meteor shower peaks around 17 November of each year. Approximately every 33 years, the Leonids produce a ‘meteor storm’ which is an amazing sight to behold. Peaking at rates of thousands of meteors per hour. The Leonids storm of 1833 gave birth to the term ‘meteor shower’ – the comet Temple-Tuttle would have recently swept through our solar system to cause the magnificent ‘storm’ rather than the usual ‘shower’. The last Leonids

It’s in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice, on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th November 7.30pm at the Hawth Studio Crawley. Sharon’s daughter Candi-Rose is getting married, and Sharon has joined her friends on a celebration Jack Powley night out. The fact that she’s been dead for twenty years isn’t going to spoil her enjoyment one little bit! Her friends laugh, cry, fight and sing in this joyous evocation of a group out to enjoy life, despite its trials and complications. Jack Powley, an Imberhorne School pupil of only 17 years old got the rights for this musical which has just finished with a tour around the UK and is currently touring in America. He said: ‘I decided that I wanted to get my teeth into something ambitious and felt that producing and directing a fun musical
at the Hawth would be a great way to go and started planning for it. For years, I have organised many fundraising events for St Catherine’s Hospice and although this event was organised as something I really wanted to do regardless, I decided that any proceeds should go to them as they just do so much hard work and are a fantastic cause’.

Hair facts and tips By Sophie at Roots Hair Studio (see ad below)
A woman’s hair is her crowning glory. It frames her face and completes her appearance. There are many things that you can tell by looking at the hair, so keeping it clean, moisturised and trimmed gives so much confidence!
Struggle with greasy hair? If you suffer from greasy hair try to avoid daily washing, as the sebaceous glands become overstimulated, secreting more grease onto the hair. This creates a vicious circle whereby the more you wash your hair, the greasier it becomes. Another problem with regular washing is that although the roots are greasy the rest of your hair is stripped of oil and the ends can become dry and brittle!
What to do • Use a mild PH balanced shampoo • Avoid rubbing the scalp too much • Only apply conditioner to the mid lengths and ends rather than the roots • Watch your diet, oily and fatty foods can contribute towards greasy hair • Use dry shampoos in-between washing your hair
Fed up with dry/brittle hair? Dry, coarse and brittle hair can be caused by several different reasons, from colouring to using heated equipment. This type of hair needs to be nourished from within, a conditioner that just rinses out just won’t do the job!
What to do

• Use an intensive moisturising shampoo which will cleanse the hair, do this without excessive rubbing this will only damage the hair more. • Use a deep conditioning masque/oil treatment once a week applying to towel dried hair. • Have the ends trimmed regularly, every 6 to 8 weeks.
Weird facts about hair • Average number of hairs on each individual 100,000 • Humidity stretches the hair • Female hair grows slower than male’s hair! • Hair is the fastest growing tissue in the body second only to bone marrow • It is normal to lose 100 hairs per day from the scalp • Pigments give hair its colour, when we age, hair receives fewer pigments and turns white or grey

Local History Notes THE SOWREYS Sir Freddie Sowrey is a wellknown resident of the Ashdown Forest area, here is an extract from the book about his family, THE SOWREYS, by Air Commodore Graham Pitchfork. Since the formation of the Royal Air Force in 1918, there is one family - the Sowreys - that is unrivalled for the length of its unbroken service and the diversity of appointments filled by the six family members and the part they played in the rich history of the service. For sixty-five years members of the Sowrey family served from the early days of the Royal Flying Corps until a few years before the end of the Cold War. The
three brothers, John, Fred and William served in the First World War with distinction, before playing an important role as the RAF struggled for its existence in the difficult early years after the Great War and later during the inter-war period. Such is the variety of the Sowrey’s experiences that there is little of note in the RAF’s history that they were not involved in. Freddie Sowrey of the second generation, joined the RAF straight from school in 1940 and trained as a pilot in Canada before returning to England to fly Mustang fighters in the tactical reconnaissance role. After the war he commanded a Meteor fighter squadron at Biggin Hill and a Javelin night fighter squadron. He went on to fill a number of senior appointments until his final appointment in Ankara, Turkey where he was the UK Military Representative to the Central Treaty Organisation. During his retirement Sir Freddie and his wife Anne bought Home Farm in Heron’s Ghyll, just south of Crowborough. The farm carried rights of common on Ashdown Forest and Sir Freddie was elected by his fellow commoners to serve on the Board of Conservators which he did for 15 years. continued on page 22

THE SOWREYS continued
We are pleased to be able to bring you a description of some famous Zeppelin-busting incidents including one with Freddie’s father, Fred Sowrey
ZEPPELIN HUNTERS What became known as ‘The Great Airship Offensive of 1916’ commenced at the end of July. Amongst the raiders were the first of the new Super ‘Zeppelins’, a larger more powerful airship capable of carrying a maximum bomb load of 9,250 lb. This era would end with Fred Sowrey, William Robinson and a handful of others becoming national heroes. On the night of 2/3 September the Germans launched the biggest airship raid of the war. William Robinson, whose Lewis guns were armed with the new Brock and Pomeroy ammunition, which included tracer, had taken off from Sutton’s Farm to patrol between that landing ground and Joyce Green at 10,000 feet. He was coming to the end of his patrol when he saw an airship caught by two searchlights to the south-east of London. He climbed to 13,000 feet and headed to cut off the departing airship but he lost sight of it as it entered cloud. He headed north to return to Sutton’s Farm and after fifteen minutes he came across the Army Shutte Lanz S.L.11 airship. He made two attacks with his Brock and Pomeroy bullets but saw no effect. With his final drum, he concentrated his fire on the rear of the Zeppelin and this time he saw a red glow start. Very quickly,
the whole of the rear part was ablaze and he had to manoeuvre violently to avoid the blazing Zeppelin as it fell.
the meantime, four pilots of 39 Squadron had taken off, including Fred Sowrey who set up a patrol near Joyce Green.
The effects of this raid were enormous on both sides. It was the first time a Zeppelin had been destroyed in the air by machinegun fire and the loss of L.Z.11 had an overwhelming impact on the German airship service. The effect on the morale of the British people was immense. The event had been witnessed by tens of thousands of people and the huge conflagration was visible for over fifty miles. After many months of suffering the menace and bombing of the apparently invulnerable airship, the British population’s feelings exploded in a national wave of near hysterical relief.
Fred had been airborne for almost two hours when he saw the L.33 just after it had been hit, as did his New Zealand friend, Lieutenant Alfred Brandon. Both lost sight of it as it flew out of the searchlight but Brandon found it again and prepared to attack. The Zeppelin had been hit badly and was losing height through a loss of hydrogen gas. Brandon fired a drum of ammunition into the airship but the second drum jammed and he was unable to bring it down. However, despite valiant attempts by the airship’s commander, Aloys
Robinson immediately became a national hero and within days was awarded the Victoria Cross. Undeterred by this loss the Germans launched their next raid on the night of 23/24 September when 11 naval airships headed for England. They included four of the latest ‘Super Zeppelins’ all heading for London after crossing the Belgian coast. Zeppelin L33 launched an attack on east London during which it suffered a direct hit from an anti-aircraft battery near Bow. In

THE SOWREYS continued Bocker, and his crew, the airship grounded north of the Blackwater estuary and burnt out. The crew were captured. In the meantime, Peterson, in command of Zeppelin L.32, approached London from the south-east and dropped his bombs. He was picked up by the searchlights and all three pilots of 39 Squadron spotted him. Fred was flying the most southerly patrol and after a twenty-five minute chase at 13,000 feet, he was ready to attack with his single Lewis gun. Brandon, who was still airborne, saw the engagement and the tracers, later reporting that the Zeppelin was being ‘hosed with a stream of fire’. The L.32 came down at South Green near Billericay with the loss of Peterson and his twenty-two man crew. The engagement had been witnessed from the ground by thousands of Londoners including Robinson and other pilots of B Flight at Sutton’s Farm who all shouted encouragement. When he landed, Fred was concerned that the wreckage might have fallen on houses but a visit to the site put his mind at rest. The successful pilots were mobbed by local villagers as they headed into the countryside to inspect the wreckage where they again received a hero’s welcome. Although it was still the early hours of the morning,
the lane leading to the crash site was completely blocked by transport of every type and by streams of pedestrians, many having travelled from London. When Fred and his colleagues tried to get within the half-mile cordon they were told they must have a pass. After a long explanation, they were allowed to drive into the field to see the wreckage. The huge, gaunt metal construction of the Zeppelin attracted crowds of people for days before the German crew were buried with full military honours. For this action, Fred was awarded the Distinguished Service Order. The loss of L.32 and L.33 on this amazing night proved to be a turning point in the Zeppelin offensive against England. Following on Robinson’s achievement, the events proved beyond doubt the great value of the aeroplane in the scheme for home defence. Furthermore, even Germany’s most ardent airship supporters started to doubt the effectiveness of the strategic bombing offensive that would later be dubbed ‘The First Blitz’. Remember
Remember the 5th of November…
Fawkes was defiant in the face of interrogation by members of the King’s Privy Chamber. When asked what he was doing in possession of so much gunpowder, Fawkes answered “to blow you Scotch beggars back to your native mountains”. His “Roman resolution” and steadfast manner earned him the admiration of the King. Under torture, however, he was soon broken giving all names & details of those involved.
Guy Fawkes (13 April 1570 – 31 January 1606), also known as Guido Fawkes (the name he adopted while fighting for the Spanish) was the most infamous member of a group of English Catholics who planned & failed to blow-up the houses of parliament in 1605. Fawkes was born and educated in York. After his father died his mother married a Catholic who refused to attend Anglican Services. Undoubtedly influenced, Fawkes later converted to Catholicism and left for the continent, where he fought in the Eighty Years’ War on the side of Catholic Spain against Protestant Dutch reformers. His zest for the cause was such that he went to Spain to seek support for a Catholic rebellion in England but was unsuccessful. Returning to England he was introduced to Robert Catesby who was to be the leader and architect of the Gunpowder plot. On 26th October the Catholic MP Lord Monteagle received an anonymous letter warning him to stay away from parliament for his safety. Despite becoming aware of the letter the conspirators resolved to continue with their plans, as it was thought to be a hoax. Monteagle showed the letter to King James, however. The King, choosing to err on the side of caution ordered a search of the cellars underneath Parliament. In the early hours of the morning on the 5th of November, Fawkes was found leaving the cellar and arrested. Inside, the barrels of gunpowder were discovered hidden under piles of firewood and coal.
With Fawkes’ fellow plotters hanged and quartered, he was the last to stand on the scaffold. With help, he began to climb the ladder to the noose and, although weakened by torture, managed to jump from the gallows thus dying instantly and avoiding being ‘‘hung, drawn & quartered”. His body was nevertheless quartered and distributed to “the four corners of the kingdom” to be displayed. On 5 November 1605 Londoners were encouraged to celebrate the King’s escape from assassination by lighting bonfires. An Act of Parliament designated each 5 November as “the joyful day of deliverance”, this remained in force until 1859. Although he was only one of 13 conspirators, Fawkes is today the individual most associated with the failed Plot. Guy Fawkes Night (or Bonfire Night) was accompanied by fireworks from the 17th century onwards. Around the time James II made his conversion to Catholicism public, it became the custom to burn an effigy to place on the fire – historically it was the pope, although of course modern effigies are of Fawkes himself. Guy Fawkes inadvertedly made an enduring contribution to the English language. During the 19th century, “guy” came to mean any oddly dressed person, but in American English it lost it’s negative connotation, and was used to refer to any male person. As usual with American English it then proceeded to be absorbed into our language this side of the pond. Oddly enough Guy Fawkes is sometimes toasted as “the last man to enter Parliament with honest intentions”…

“When I started my plastering business at the beginning of 2010 I decided to advertise in ‘East Grinstead living’ as the cost was reasonable and it seemed like a good publication. Little did I know just how much of a good idea that was!! Over the following 6 months I would say that around 70% of my leads came from that one 1/4 page advert and when I heard that there was going to be another publication (Ashdown Forest Living) by the same people going out to another area, it was a no brainer to advertise in that one too!” Matt Merrell, MRM Plastering and Building

Local Business Profile: Heat Tek Heat Tek is a well known local family business run by Paul Worrall who has been a heating and plumbing engineer for 32 years. He originally carried out a 6 year apprenticeship with his father’s company after leaving school, becoming a partner along with his brother in the family company until his father’s retirement. It was then, 25 years ago now, that Paul branched out on his own to form Heat Tek Ltd. Over the years Paul has built up the company’s local reputation on the basis of hard graft and quality workmanship with the main stay of his work coming by way of recommendations and repeat customers. He also works on projects with a number of local builders and architects. With fuel costs soaring, as well as domestic heating and plumbing, Heat Tek has moved into the renewable energy market by investing a substantial amount of time and effort into gaining additional qualifications. They now have a Dimplex Accredited
Installers Certificate for heat pumps. These are certainly exciting times for renewables and Heat Tek offers advice and a full design and installation service. Heat Tek’s customers appreciate the friendly, fast and reliable service in all aspects of plumbing and heating; their reputation precedes them. Paul believes that customers value, above all else, Heat Tek’s ability to design bespoke installations exactly to their customers specs. Paul says, ‘Our aim is to continue offering our customers the quality service that we are renowned for’. It is a true local family business with Paul as managing director, his brother as chief engineer and Paul’s wife as company secretary. Local Club’s 80th Anniversary The East Grinstead Natural Sciences Society was founded in 1932 when a small group of people decided to formalize their mutual interest in natural history. One of their main aims was to ‘urge protection of local flora and fauna’ and many locally prominent personalities have been associated with the Society, including Hilda Duke who held office as President between 1987 and her death in 2005. Walter Ingwerson, well known for his specialist nursery, was a frequent and eloquent speaker as well as being Vice President for six years from 1954. His son, Will, followed in his father’s footsteps and it was when he became President in 1973 that the Society changed its name to the East Grinstead Natural History Society. During the early days there were ‘seasonal displays of local flora’ and the speakers were usually local enthusiasts who gave lectures on their specialist subjects, often illustrated with ‘lantern slides’. Rather bizarrely in 1954 the members learnt about ‘Witchcraft’ and ‘The Story of Shoes’, although possibly there was some tenuous connection with natural history through potions and materials used in making shoes! The notes from these early meetings make fascinating reading.
celebrations next month, the Society continues to thrive. Whilst we still welcome local enthusiasts, the range of lectures have become increasingly diverse and, in the age of laptops, more sophisticated in their presentation. But the original concept of the founding members to take an interest in and protect the local natural history and environment remain the same. Besides lectures we also enjoy walks, bird and badger watches and occasional excursions. We promote awareness of our beautiful natural surroundings with displays at the library and, most recently, at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee exhibition held at St Swithun’s Church. Everyone, regardless of age, is welcome to join us but, be warned, the annual subscription of 3s 6d in 1932 no longer applies!

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775-1851 The son of a barber/wig-maker, Turner was born near Covent Garden, London. He received little formal education and his only sister died aged 7 years, when he was just 10years old. His artistic career started at an early age, selling to his father’s customers. His first painting sold when he was only 12 years old. Having gained an apprenticeship after receiving a £100 bequest (nowadays approximately £10,000) from one of his father’s customers who had seen his work in his father’s shop, Turner was then accepted into the Royal Academy of Art. He was just 14 years old. Whilst at the Academy he developed his talent for landscapes. By the age of 26 Turner was regarded as an established British artist. Inspired by the French artist Claude Lorrain, he became “a painter of light.” Much of his private life was kept secret, allegedly having two daughters by a widow named Sarah Danby; but he never married. He dedicated his whole life to his art. Unlike many other artists, he was successful throughout the whole of his career. Constantly sought after, he amassed a fortune through his commissions. He had suffered bouts of illness throughout his adult life particularly in the winter months. In 1796, Turner’s usually prolific output decreased dramatically. This may have been due to exhaustion and stress. Although he could be indifferent to family matters, he may have been affected by the health of his mother. At home she was suffering from mental illness and violent tempers. In 1848 he contracted cholera from an epidemic that was sweeping the country. Turner travelled extensively throughout Europe, including Germany, France, Switzerland and Italy. Venice inspired him to produce some of his greatest work. These trips provided him with a wealth of creative material to use in his art. He would also walk vast distances to find the ideal situation
The Slave Ship 1840
Turner was inspired to paint this after reading The History and Abolition of the Slave trade by Thomas Clarkson. In 1781 133 slaves were thrown overboard The Zong on the orders of Captain Luke Collingwood, in order for the insurance payments to be collected. It was alleged that there was insufficient water on board to last them to their destination in Jamaica. However, this was later disproved when the ship arrived in dock with 420 imperial gallons of water still on board. to paint – sometimes up to 25 miles in a day. Turner was a businessman as much as an artist. A prolific painter throughout a long career, he also had a mind to save money where he could. For instance he used his father as an assistant to make and prepare his canvases. Turner did have his fair share of critics, who were more conservative in their approach to painting. Turner wanted to convey expression and spirit rather than merely form and features. Critics of his depiction of sea said it “looks like soap and chalk” and of his sky they described it as “a heap of marble mountains.” Sir George Beaumont (one of his more outspoken opponents) criticised his use of colour and lack of “finish” with regard to his paintings. In response, Turner painted “Narcissus and Echo” in a “finished” manner just to prove that he could do it if he wanted to. He wanted to show that he painted the way he did through choice not due to lack of ability.

As he got older he developed a reputation of being a scruffy, introverted eccentric at times almost reclusive. He could be arrogant, verging on rude, to his clients and apparently this attitude became worse after he was appointed as a Academician. Despite his poor health he continued to work to almost the end of his life before passing away at his home in Chelsea. He was buried as a national hero at St Pauls Cathedral and left a fortune of more than £140,000. Five years after his death the nation received his works. His will was subject to litigation for many years. He left 19,000 watercolours, drawings and oils to the British nation. This was in the form of the “Turner Bequest. His career lasted more than 60 years. Article by Ian Morgan of Ashurst. Ian Morgan is available for art talks. Please contact him at ian@morganprobate.co.uk.

Local History Notes
Thomas Cramp born in Lewes in 1810 was the founder of the Temperance Society in East Grinstead. the Temperance Movement started in the early 19th century to promote moderation & abstinence of alcohol and gained popularity throughout the century. Thomas’s father, Jury Cramp, was a vet and in Thomas’ early days the family lived in Bexhill. He came to East Grinstead to become an apprentice pen-cutter to a Thomas Palmer, the Royal Quill Pen manufacturer. His mother, Mary Ingleton, died when he was twelve and his father remarried within a year of his first wife’s death. His new wife, Mary Anne Edmonds, gave birth to two sons and two daughters during the next eight years. Thomas had started the EG branch of the Temperance Society in 1837 which demanded total abstinence from its members. In Thomas’s case he not only did not drink alcohol but did not drink tea or coffee either… The society attracted violent opposition and members were stoned in the streets. Thomas was forbidden to attend the Zion Chapel and relieved of his position as the superintendant of their Sunday School. It was to take eight years for him to be allowed to hold meetings of the society in the chapel. Thomas married Jane Pretty, the daughter of a Wesleyan minister, on June 24th 1841, in East Grinstead. How much contact Thomas had with his father once he had moved to East Grinstead is unknown, but the life of his father was to take a dramatic turn in 1833. Jury Cramp, as well as running his vetinary practice, was in business with one of his nephews, building coaches. Unknown to him, his nephew had been embezzling money from the firm and they faced bankrupcy. Jury had to make a choice: either he could stay and be sent to debtors’ prison or face deportation, or he could leave the country. He chose the latter course. He and his second wife, together with their four children embarked on “The Rubicon” destined for Sydney, in November 1833. He found work as a farrier in several places in New South Wales until his death in 1849. During a twelve year period, he and his second wife produced a further nine children. The first either born in Australia or on the voyage out, a son James, died in infancy but the other five daughters and three sons seem to have lived into adulthood.
Thomas continued his abstemious life. The Temperance Movement had gained momentum throughout the whole country and East Grinstead came to accept Thomas. Eventually, the East Grinstead branch was to become one of the strongest in England. The Cramp family had expanded, now he was father to Thomas junior, Mary Jane, Harriet, Sarah Ann and Jury. The latter, born in 1847 and named after his exiled grandfather, seems to be a sign that Thomas had still kept in touch with his father or at least thought kindly of him. He was now the owner of the quill pen making business where he had started his working life, as an apprentice. Throughout his life he kept a diary, recording happenings in the town, often with quite critical comments. Writing in April 1843 about the cattle fair; “Many people, old and young, much drinking, noise and riot in all their excesses and consequences” And three years later, of the same event; “Attendance of persons and stock scanty. It would be a happy thing were these occasions done away with” It was not just the fairs that attracted criticism, November 5th also came under his fire: “A tar tub, squibs and crackers and other fireworks in this town- these things ought not to be.” However, his son Jury reminiscing in the

Observer in 1932 had different thoughts, he stated: “Another longed for event was Guy Fawkes Day... when dressed in colours we paraded the town for pence to purchase fireworks for the procession... and bonfire… where the Pope was burnt on a great stack of faggots.” Thomas did have a more compassionate side, however. Christmas Day, 1842 fell on a Sunday, he wrote: “This day happening on the Sabbath- deprives many of an holiday.” In 1871, despite his exhortations and pamphlets the town had six public houses, three beer shops, two wine and spirit merchants and a brewery. Eight years later the Elephant’s Head Coffee House was opened in Queens Road, a slight victory, but which Thomas himself could not make use of, of course. Thomas was now a pillar of the community. He was High Bailiff of the County Court for thirty five years. He also founded the Penny Bank in
the town. This was the equivalent of a Savings Bank for encouraging the less affluent to save. With James Blomfield he founded the Literary and Scientific Institute in 1843. He was on many committees and boards and served as secretary to the Gas Company for twenty five years. In 1887 a public meeting was held to celebrate the Temperance Society’s Golden Jubilee. Three years later, his eightieth birthday was marked in the town by a clock which was hung outside the Institute Building. This stood on the corner where King Street meets the London Road. When the Institute was demolished to make way for the Christopher Road development in 1936, it was moved to its present position on a pillar opposite the Broadway on the London Road. Thomas died in 1891 a much respected citizen of the town which had vilified him as young man. He had achieved this through his long public service in East Grinstead. By Dorothy Hatswell

S
ackville College
By Simon Kerr
At this time of the year I often think that someday when I’m rich and famous I’m going to make a very serious cash offer to buy Sackville College, that glowing golden sandstone structure that proudly stands at the Eastern approach to the town. So why would I want to own this particular building and why does this thought return to taunt me each November? Well, I challenge you to produce a finer building in the land better suited to spending Christmas, surrounded by friends and family. I can’t think of any, and perhaps with a light dusting of snow and a crackling open fire in the background, it could even be entered in a world wide contest too. Although the fire in the Dining Hall can at time be a little too hot to handle, and I do recall that half way through a meal there, on a bleak December evening, the guests had to swap around half way through the meal as half were baked and the remainder chilled to the marrow. So there might be some drawbacks. The Dining Hall also has a magnificent minstrel’s gallery, just ready for a small choir to serenade you with what is surely one of the English-speaking world’s most popular Christmas carols – Good King Wenceslas. Let’s not forget that here is where the very words were written, by one John Mason Neale in the study he used across the courtyard. Neale was the Warden of the College, and looking out of the window while the moon shone on to a bleak landscape, he noted a shadowy figure gathering fuel for the winter. He put pen to paper and using what he saw outside one of the most famous Christmas Carols was born. Here is an extract about Christmas at the College from 1876:
“At Sackville College, according to his usual custom, the Warden entertained his friends and the neighbourhood on Christmas Eve. Proceedings commenced with a service in the beautiful College Chapel. The Vicar of East Grinstead and the Vicar of Felbridge read the lessons, the rector of Hartfield preached the sermon and the choral portion of the service was prettily rendered by the Rev. W.Payne Crawfurd and his family. Owing to some misapprehension, or want of previous co-operation on the part of the officiating Clergy, the effect of the service was marred by its excessive length, one hour and twenty minutes being too much for the patience even of such an educated congregation as was present. Half an hour should have been the outside of its duration” After this the company adjourned to the Hall, where, on a given signal, the Yule Log was borne in by four stalwart yeoman, astride of which was seated a miniature representation of the Lord of Misrule, in the shape of a jolly looking little fellow. Two large metal dishes were then handed round containing Bambinos – a sort of biscuit, another ancient custom revived by the Warden, and the Choristers in the gallery sang glees. After the service, the Earl and Countess de la Warr, Viscount Cantelupe and Mr. Sackville and the elite of the neighbourhood, proceeded through the Earl’s lodgings to the great West Chamber, where tea was served. Sadly I fear that my ambition to buy the College and host such a magnificent feast at Christmas is not to be. I do however still think that I might yet make an excellent Lord of Misrule, which is rather more up my street.
