PREPARE FOR WINTER!
Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

Q&A with Dave Ricketts Co- Owner, D&C Cycles What training have you had in Bikes over the years? I have been working with bikes from the age of 5 when I was shown how to fix a puncture! having now worked in a bike shop for over 25 years, I have full cytech level 3 training which is the highest that can be obtained.
What do you like most about your profession? everything, it’s difficult to pinpoint a particular part of it, I guess that’s why my love for it hasn’t changed from the first day.
your work then its not worth you being there.
How did you come to have your own family business?
Why do you think your customers choose you over other Cycling Shops?
my wife was being made redundant so I needed to change the hours of my hours. I left the place I worked for and started work with London Cycles, shortly after I was asked if I wanted to take over so with my wife’s redundancy and some savings we opened the doors to d&C Cycles in december 2012.
I suppose because I tell the truth and treat them the same way that I would like to be treated. Great service goes a long way and its a dying art in shops. I would rather spend a little longer on trying to fix something than just replace it - I just want to it work and for the best price for my customers.
What do you most take pride in in your work?

STM, G & OSE here’s our Q&a with co-founder of the new east Grinstead ukulele Club mike davids:
WY S THE LLE UH A OVD STMNT? two things happen when people see you with a uke. 1) It brings a smile to their faces. 2) they have low expectations. It is loved because it exudes fun, is very portable and you can progress to an intermediate level quite quickly.
W & WY S THE LLE B OMD? at a Jives aces concert at east Court in august their lead singer, Ian Clarkson who uses a uke in their act, spotted my ukulele tee shirt and said, from the stage “ why don’t we start a ukulele club in east Grinstead” by the end of the show five people had approached me expressing interest!
WAT S PND NE THN? So I researched a venue and the manager at the Sportsman Pub offered use of their upstairs room, so I just went ahead and did it. We meet fortnightly and have only had two jams so far. eighteen people
turned up to the first and twenty two to the second. I have no doubt that we shall grow rapidly.
WAT ARE U G O PN ITH THE B N THE UURE? our motto is Strum, Sing & Socialise and that’s all we are aiming for. however, from my experience with other ukulele clubs I have no doubt that once we have jammed together for a bit we shall start to sound ok and will be invited to perform at charity does, fetes etc. Spread the uke love...

December sees once again the start of Wenceslas Weeks in East Grinstead over Christmas the town will be full of events, this year again under the umbrella of Wenceslas Weeks. We’ve chosen this title to reflect east Grinstead’s own unique association with this much loved Christmas Carol which was of course written right here in 1853 in Sackville College by then Warden John mason Neale. across the english speaking world people will be singing about page and monarch striding out into the rude wind’s wild lament and bringing flesh and wine (as well as a handy pine log!) to the poor peasant who lived against the forest fence, by St agnes Fountain. I wonder how many of them will know that Neale wrote these words looking out of his study window towards ashdown Forest? Some of the best events are the carol concerts held in the chapel at the College through december. the big outdoor events are the Christmas Shopping Festival on Sunday 1st of december, when the shopping part of London road is closed to traffic and filled with fairground attractions and stalls. then there’s the unique ‘twas the Sunday before Christmas’ celebrations, this year falling on Sunday 22nd of december when the traders in the historic high Street open their shops to give a special dickensian welcome. they even take time to partake in a Choir and serenade

shoppers with a selection of choice carols! Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas though without a traditional panto, and as ever our very own Chequer mead have got a real cracker this year with Jack and the beanstalk. equally popular are the Christmas services on the bluebell railway including the Weekday Wonders Christmas meal that leaves from east Grinstead on the 9th and 10th of december - both events will need advance booking. above all have a joyful holiday season. - Simon Kerr
this month’s eG Living cover is the work of local illustrator tony Goddard, and can be seen in the new ‘Find your way around east Grinstead’ leaflet just published by the town’s tourist information office. Simon Kerr, the town Promotion manager commissioned tony to provide the artwork for the new leaflet. “We wanted our visitors to get an immediate impression of the look and feel of the town” Says Simon. “having this illustrated by tony’s drawings lends the whole project some historical background plus of course the artistic charm”. It’s not the first time that tony’s work has been seen in east Grinstead, as his work can also be found on the terrace at east Court where the illustrations of the building were also provided by him. Some of this work is intended to be incorporated in a new range giftware and souvenirs being developed by the town’s tourist information office. tony’s work can also be found in the surrounding villages of West hoathly and hartfield and he can be contacted by email at anthony.goddard5014@btinternet.com

Local History Notes
East Grinstead born Abe Mitchell & the Ryder Cup by dorothy hatwell
henry abraham (abe) mitchell was born on January 18th 1887. his mother mary had been working as a domestic servant and was not married at the time; the birth took place in the east Grinstead union Workhouse. mary’s parents George and Sophia mitchell, who lived in Forest row, took the infant henry into their own family, in spite of the fact that they had another child themselves later the same year. according to the 1911 Census mary later married mark Seymour in 1891 and they had seven children, but it is unclear if henry was one of the seven or not. henry was soon known as ”abe” and seems to have lived with and been brought up by his grandparents as a son, not a grandson - even still the 1911 census does name him as a grandson. mary must have kept in touch with her family and with abe, as in 1911 her own brother Frank was living with her and her husband mark who himself, was a greenkeeper at the golf club. this would have meant that he saw the mitchell family almost daily. From an early age, abe played golf. using first a stick as a club, he later was the proud possessor of a set of real golf clubs. his skill soon reached the ears of the committee who ran the ‘Cantelupe artisans’ Club’, based on the same course as the ashdown Forest Club. It was only the second artisan’s Club in england and he was invited to become member. he worked as a gardener and tree-feller in the grounds, which built up his strength and also caddied for members of the ashdown Forest Golf Club which increased his knowledge of the game. In those days amateurs were the people who played in tournaments. Professionals were regarded as lower class and were not allowed to
compete in most places alongside the ameteurs. also artisans were really amateurs but from working class backgrounds. abe mitchell fell between two stools; he was by far the best golfer at Forest row but he was an artisan and a professional. the First World War loomed and abe enlisted in the royal artillery regiment just before the outbreak on august 4th 1914. he had an uneventful war and on his return to Forest row he was welcomed at the station by the village band. In 1920 he was offered a five year contract to be the professional at North Foreland Golf Club in Kent. Soon after taking up his new post, he married dora deag in tunbridge Wells on November 27th 1920. during his time at North Foreland he visited america on several occasions to play exhibition matches. When his contract expired and was not renewed he threatened to emigrate to america but Samuel ryder who had just taken up the game, employed abe as his personal instructor at the Verulam Club. ryder soon became almost obsessed by the game and he also recognised the quality of abe’s play. ryder had been running a successful seed business which he’d personally transformed by selling seeds in Penny Packets. this enabled anyone, even those with limited means, to grow their own vegetables and flowers at home. he amassed a fortune through the sales

Clothes, Health & Beauty of these, and, when ill health forced him to retire, he took up golf to fill his time. he thought that a tournament in which a team from britain played the united States for a trophy would be good for the game. and naturally thought that abe, now one of the foremost golfers in the country, would be included in the team. however, because of abe’s professional status it was initially decided that he was not eligible to play. on hearing this ryder, withdrew his offer of a trophy, but reconsidered it when abe was included. In a victory of real talent over privilege, abe was made Player Captain of the first ryder Cup team in 1927. unfortunately, he developed appendicitis just before the team sailed to america and so could not play. however, he did go on to captain three more ryder Cup tournaments in the next few years. to assert and re-iterate his support of abe, ryder commissioned a statuette of him on top of the now world famous ryder Cup trophy. this means that abe mitchell has been part of every ryder Cup competition between Great britain and the united States and latterly between europe and the States since the very beginning. though he died suddenly in St albans on June 11th 1947 aged only sixty, his legacy remains to this day on the international golf stage of the ryder Cup.

MEET
HILARY NEEDHAM hilary Needham is a founder member and honorary VicePresident of the east Grinstead Festival, she was awarded a Community Service award by mid Sussex Council last month, here is a Q&a with her about the festival: How did you get involved in the East Grinstead Festival initially? I first heard the idea of holding a festival through rosemary Woodd of roshe School of dance and was involved from the start. I was the Piano Secretary for the first 30 years, having been a piano teacher for 50 years until I retired. east Grinstead Festival began in the Summer of 1968. It offered a much needed, competitive platform for the young artist whereby he/she is able to perform to an audience and to learn by listening to others play, plus receive valuable adjudication. What is the History of the Festival? the Festival movement itself was founded in 1921 by Sir hugh S roberton who was the founder of the famous Glasgow orpheus Choir. Sir hugh and a group of his colleagues hoped to raise the standard of musical appreciation, which was at a very low ebb after the Victorian era. the movement has grown from strength to strength with a total of well over 300 Festivals throughout the british Isles and beyond.
What has been the hardest part about putting on the festival year after year? this has always been a question of money. It is very expensive to stage a festival. then we have to have enough volunteers to help us on the days of the festival and we could do with a few more on our committee. What has been the highlight for you personally over the years? having the privilege of meeting the Queen at St. James’s Palace in 1991, on the occasion of the Federation’s 70th anniversary. I represented the music teachers’ association ( part of the Federation) and I had to introduce 4 people to the Queen after I had been introduced to her by the Federation’s Chairman. that was something I will never forget!

Golden Age
Fun, Frills & Fancy Dress
for Ghastly Grans
The model, Emily Fry, a 6th form student at Imberhorne School
“We are entering a Golden age for grannies,” laughed east Grinstead author Geraldine durrant, celebrating the publication of her latest book, Two Bad Grans. and she should know. a grandmother herself, the elderly heroines of all four of her children’s books are funny, feisty - and very badly behaved. “older women in children’s books are usually witches or apple-cheeked old dears, but modern grannies are nothing like their literary stereotypes: we’ve all had careers outside the home - and we don’t knit. “red riding hood’s old Gran got eaten. my heroines would have served the big bad Wolf up in a pie – if only they knew how to cook one!” times – and grannies – have changed, and following her successful Pirate Gran series, Geraldine’s Two Bad Grans are equally egregious. “my own grandmother was an upright old lady who’d had a very hard life, and after being widowed, she had to take in washing to support her ten children. “but my ‘bad grans’ are utterly shameless. they burped over dinner, they slurped up their teas. they never said ‘thank you’. they never said ‘PLeaSe’. they grabbed the best cakes, which they ate by the plateful, and everyone said they were simply disgraceful… they sneezed without hankies, crossed roads without looking, drank far too much sherry, did too little cooking, but feasted on marshmallows, iced buns and kippers, and stayed all day long in their nighties and slippers. “but eventually fate – in the form of grandchildren - catches up with them, and in a road to damascus moment they realise that ‘when you’re a granny you have to be Good, and start to behave as all good grannies should’. * Two Bad Grans is published by Piccadilly Press. Geraldine’s three previous books have been adapted for a musical production Pirate Gran on Stage by Scamp theatre, and will tour uK-wide next year.
Chequer mead Fancy dress and Stage Costume hire opened in october 2008, after nine months of intensive work by a group of talented volunteers who sorted, washed and mended costumes donated by local drama groups and eG operatic Society. eventually we’d managed to turn what at first looked like an idiosyncratic jumble sale into a professional Fancy dress/Costume hire facility. these 5 years have seen us grow out of all recognition. Initially our home was the portacabin to the rear of the theatre and the under-stage area. We have since acquired a second portacabin with much appreciated help from Chequer mead Friends. a team of 8 regular volunteers, we each contribute our own particular expertise (tea making is essential of course!) and we welcome anyone who has an interest in costumes, an ability to sew is helpful, but not essential as washing and ironing is always ongoing, similarly mending. We open to the public on Saturday mornings, 10am to 1pm, plus other times for groups by special arrangement. We have a work morning every Friday, the last Friday of each month being a whole day with a social lunch. having just celebrated our 5th birthday, we have contributed just over £25,000 so far to Chequer mead. We’re a very happy team and go forward into our sixth year with great enthusiasm! Volunteers are most welcome. Contact: Barbara 01342 322944, Sandie 01342 325134, or chequermead.org.uk

‘Eat your Greens’, not just a pretty phrase... apparently scientists have discovered that the key to surviving a nuclear disaster may lie in brussels sprouts, broccoli, etc. a compound derived from these and other hardy vegetables protected rodents from lethal doses of radiation in recent experiments.
Singing for Soul Cakes on all Saints’ day and all Souls’ day (or hallowmas as it used to be called, Nov 1st and 2nd) beggers went door to door ‘souling’ wherein a song was sung and promises of prayers for the dead of the household made in exchange for ‘soul cakes’.
the cakes were usually filled with allspice, nutmeg, the compound, 3 ,3’-diindolylmethane or dIm, gets produced cinnamon, ginger or other sweet spices, raisins or in the stomach after people eat cruciferous vegetables such currants, and before baking were often topped with as broccoli, brussels sprouts or cabbage. It is already well the mark of a cross to signify that these were alms. known for fighting cancer in animal experiments. In 1891 the souler’s song was recorded as Well that’ll give you a fresh view of the need for sprouts containing the following lyrics: with Christmas dinner: something healthy to counterbalance all those goodies! - tip: try not to over-boil... the soulers must have droned out their ditties tonelessly and monotonously. Shakespeare remarks in the two Gentlemen of Verona that Speed observes a “special mark” of a man in love is “to speak, puling like a beggar at hallowmas” - (meaning of puling: whining, whimper).

LANCASTER BALE OUT Clive Smith lives in Forest row and has been working on his book, Lancaster bale out, for the last 20 years. We are pleased to be able to publish an extract here in honour of remembrance Sunday. here he explains further: ‘my mother’s cousin, Sgt Jack hougham was killed when his Lancaster bomber was shot down 70 years ago. Growing up I was fascinated by his logbook old photos of him and letters but no one in my family seemed to know what had happened to him, so about 20 years ago I started to research. I had always assumed that all his crew had died with him but I was amazed to find out that one, Fred Smooker, had actually survived. after much searching through telephone directories I wrote off a tentative letter and a few weeks later received a response confirming I had found the right person!
then came the awful doubt that surely no one else could have got out in time? overhead, the continuous droning of Lancasters. Come and get me I prayed. then reason returned. What could I do? I could help none of my comrades. Instructions came to the fore. hide your parachute and get away from the plane before the Germans come to investigate. I got to my feet again and this time stayed upright. thank God, my ankles can’t be broken, only sprained. hobbling about I bundled up my parachute into a ball, but where could I hide it? I was in a field so, pulling up some long grass, I laid the chute in a hollow and covered it over, not very well hidden, but I was going to have enough to do to walk, without lugging a parachute with me until I found a good hiding place. “Get away from the plane,” I thought. I turned my back on the blazing Lancaster and with great difficulty, hobbled away in my socks, gasping with pain as I went, until all was quiet. No burning Lancaster, no droning Lancasters overhead, only me in a field in the north of France at about 3:30 am. I continued to hobble across fields, skirting one in which frightened cattle were milling about, until it was breaking daylight. I climbed over a fence into
‘Fred agreed to write down the whole account of what happened to him and my cousin in his own words which forms the basis of my book. he was helped in France by numerous people and members of the resistance, but was ultimately betrayed and ended up as a PoW. Following the war, however, he lived to the ripe old age of 91’. here is a fabulous extract from Clives’s book: I didn’t count to ten - I just pulled the handle. I felt the plane pass over me, then I was whirling in space, cringing as if expecting a sudden violent shock which would jar the life out of me. the sudden shock came - but I was still alive. however, I had a burning pain in my groin. I was hanging beneath my parachute. I very gingerly reached up with both hands to grasp my shoulder straps and ease the weight off my groin. the chute gave a lurch and my heart almost stopped, then thud, I hit the ground. I lay on my back, and looking up I could see my parachute canopy slowly collapsing on the ground in front of me. I stood up, and immediately my legs gave way. my ankles were lifeless. “God,” I thought, “my ankles are broken.” Some 500 yards away I gazed in shocked disbelief at my blazing Lancaster in an adjoining field. 30 | November 2013 • Please mention East Grinstead Living when responding to adverts

a narrow country lane. Crossing the lane, I climbed another fence and was hobbling through a cornfield when I decided to lie down and rest in the corn. I immediately fell asleep. When I awoke the sun was high in the sky and I had a raging thirst. the full course of events which had happened passed through my mind and I started to cry. my parents would maybe now have had a telegram to tell them I was missing. Were all my crew really dead? I didn’t know for sure. Surely Jim had managed to get to the door in the fuselage - and Jack and bill? rosner must have got out of the top escape hatch I thought. I was on my own here, in a cornfield in German occupied France. It must have been raining while I was asleep, so to quench my thirst I sucked rain from the ears of corn. We were issued with an escape kit for operations, containing various supposedly useful items of assistance. horlicks tablets, maps of europe, in the form of silk handkerchiefs, a small hacksaw blade and a rubber water container. I also had a small, sealed, can of orange juice on my person, but I could not open it because I had no tin opener or a knife, and I still had a raging thirst. I dared not stand up in case I was spotted, so I poked my head over the top of the corn, and found that it was only a square patch that had not yet been cut. about 100 yards away some

women were gathering stalks of corn which had been left by the reaper. I thought of calling out to them to help me, but I decided against it in case they might give me away. Next to an area of corn in another direction I saw a patch of potatoes, and further on a water trough. I lay down and went back to sleep again. When I next awoke it was dark. I tried to stand up, but I could not because my ankles were swollen to a terrible size. my flying trousers had elastic braces so I cut them off, with the hacksaw from my escape kit, and bound my ankles. I could still not stand and actually crawled on my hands and knees, out of the corn, and over the potato patch to the water trough. my thirst was terrific so I had a good drink from the trough. I filled my water bag, but it was useless - I could not carry it with me because it was just an open rubber bag, so I threw it away in disgust. using the trough as a support I managed to get onto my feet. I realised I would not be able to walk on rough ground so I decided to get on to the country lane which was smoother. Walking on the lane was easier, so I had the idea that I could walk to Switzerland. I must have been delirious. after a while, maybe 15 minutes, I heard the clip-clop of horse’s hooves. It could be a mounted policeman I thought, or a German on horseback. We had been told that there was a curfew in France, everyone had to be indoors by 10pm. I didn’t know the time but I thought I had better get off the lane, so back into the fields I hobbled agonizingly. I don’t know how long I suffered but eventually while negotiating another cornfield I fell down, and said words to myself to the effect “sod this for a lark” and remained lying in the

corn, where I went to sleep again. upon awakening again it was daylight, and under normal circumstances one would have thought what a beautiful summer morning it was. It was now Saturday, July 10th, and the only thing I could think of was, I needed a drink, I was extremely thirsty. I managed to stand and noticed, near a gate in the cornfield, there was a water tank on wheels with shafts for a horse to pull it. I hobbled out of the corn towards the gate and found this tank had a tap on the end where I again quenched my thirst. I seemed now to have come to my senses. I could never walk to Switzerland, and I had to either give myself up, or get some help. I went out of the gate and sat down on the bank of a country lane. after a while I heard voices - French - and soon two men on
bicycles came along. they passed me and then stopped in their tracks. they came back to me and I pointed to my chest and said “angleterre.” I know little French, but they jabbered on together “avion, quatre moteurs, etc.” one of them offered me his bread, but I refused. I was not hungry only thirsty. as I said I know very little French but I understood when they said that they had to go to work. I was disappointed at first, but then one of them pointed across the fields and said “Petite ville, pas allemands.” I looked where he was pointing and could see a large square tank up on a high girder framework. I took this to be a water tower, and after they had wished me “bonne chance” they cycled off. I was on my painful way again, heading for this water tower. eventually I arrived, and found myself at some gardens. I climbed the fence and
The English Language: Is there method to the madness? When the oxford english dictionary created a furore by including a new definition of the word ‘literally’ meaning (pretty much) ‘not literally’, It was the biggest Semantics news since sliced bread! Literally means of course, ‘in a literal manner or sense; exactly’. however over the years a new meaning has morphed into, ‘a term for emphasis when a statement isn’t true’. this, of course, is heading to the other side of the word-meaning- spectrum. despite the various outcries and decries literally is far from being the first word in the english language to have ‘changed sides’. ‘Nice’ for instance, the sworn enemy of the school english essay, has visited almost every aspect of human attitude. It’s history is briefly: Late 13th Century, “foolish, stupid, senseless’, from Latin nescius meaning ‘ignorant’. It’s meaning seemed to have progressed to ‘timid, reserved’ and then ‘fussy, fastidious’ (late 14th Century). by the 1500s it became “precise, careful” (preserved in the phrase nice and early) and then “agreeable, delightful” (18th Century), finally becoming ‘kind, thoughtful’ in the 19th Century. another current meaning also indicates that something is satisfactory. ‘mate’ is another word that’s meaning may become distorted through time by over use in certain contexts as in, ‘mate, you really don’t want to do that’ or ‘Come on mate, say sorry’, etc... We’ll have to check back in 50 years for a re-estimation of it’s morphing process! 34 | November 2013 • Please mention East Grinstead Living when responding to adverts

Did you know? the amazonian rainforest, known to be one of the most species-rich areas on the planet, is actually dominated by a only few types of trees. While the forest harbors around 16,000 tree species, only 227 of them account for nearly half of the trees that thrive there. the palm euterpe precatoria is most abundant. researchers came to this conclusion after tediously cataloguing 1,170 different tree plots throughout the region. the work could help develop better strategies for protecting the forest.

I was able to bend down and almost touch my toes, which I hadn’t been able to do since I was sixteen…” Mark, Scotland “…I have found that my eyesight has improved as well…” L.P. 45yrs old “Immediately after the treatment Marie asked me if I felt any difference but I couldn’t say I felt any different. That was until I woke up the next morning with my back pain completely gone. It has never returned and it’s all down to the adjustment of my atlas.” Lynsey, UK
