PROFILE: Q&A with SEASONS ART CLASS TUTOR
Local Artist Sheri Gee
What feedback have you had so far from students?
Tell me about the structure of the art classes?
Good drawing is at the heart of all of the projects, so we're always encouraging the students to observe more closely and develop their hand to eye co-ordination and not rely on what they think they know. Even after week 1 I've had students exclaim that they're now seeing more things - more shades, more shadows, with an artist's exploratory eye.
Each term contains the same components: 3 weeks of drawing; 2 of pastels; 3 of watercolour and 4 of acrylics, with a critique and mini exhibition to celebrate the artist's development. The concept is that projects will be chosen to compliment the season, so no two terms will be the same.
Who would you recommend this course to? Anyone wanting to build their skills across the board who's looking for a safe and friendly environment to develop their art skills. The subject matter is varied and challenging so it gives plenty of opportunity to push yourself to learn new things.
What is the general goal for people who come to your art classes? To improve and gain confidence in their art. Many students haven't picked up a pencil or paint brush since school. It's a good, friendly environment to learn new skills, and make new friends at the same time.

A HERO OF HEROE S :
Sidney Godley VC East Grinstead, as all towns in England, sent citizens to fight in World War I. Many lost their lives and we yearly remember their ultimate sacrifice and those who lived to tell the tale. But this year is even more poignant, as we celebrate the centenary of the end of World War 1 with commemorations across the country.
a keen sportsman, being a good cross-country runner, footballer and cricketer and was popular with his fellow soldiers. On August 9th, 1914, the United Kingdom declared war on Germany. The Royal Fusiliers to which Private Godley belonged, had already been mobilized for 5 days before embarking for Le Havre, France. They were among the first British soldiers to reach French soil.
One humble soldier, East Grinstead born and bred, became a hero of unparalleled achievement and famous in his own right: Private Sidney Godley. As East Grinstead Living commemorates the centenary in our own way, we would like to share his story: Sidney Frank Godley was born on 14th August 1889 at North End, East Grinstead. He was the son of Frank and Avis Godley. Frank was a painter and decorator and was himself the son of William Godley, a pit sawyer, who was lived at Mount Noddy. Sidney could not have been more ‘Grinsteadian’ if he tried, his family, for several generations, had come from this area, and can be traced back to a George Godley in 1770. Sidney’s paternal grandmother was Harriet Pattenden, from the large Pattenden family of Horne, (which was part of Felbridge before the Felbridge ecclesiastical was created in COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY 1865). Harriet had married William Godley, in 1855 in living
the parish of East Grinstead and Sidney’s great uncle John Godley, brother of William, was a master carpenter who carved the original pews of St Swithun’s Church. Sidney’s childhood was not without sorrow; his mother died when he was six years old and after her death Sidney was sent to live with his uncle and aunt in Willesden, North London. After leaving school he went to work at an iron-mongers store in Kilburn High Road where he must have gained a grounding in plumbing as, in later life, he lists himself as a plumber. However, on the 13th December 1909 Sidney, then aged 20, signed up for the Royal Fusiliers. In the army he was noted as Living

Less than 3 weeks after the outbreak of the war, British forces were to see their first action: The German army had amassed along the French frontier, having pushed through most of Belgium & Luxembourg, skirting French defences. A railway bridge was to become the focal point for some of the hardest fighting recorded, a true baptism of fire for the troops. This was the scene of the first Victoria Cross of World War I, the first real furious British-German fighting, and Private Sidney Godley of East Grinstead was to play the starring role. The British Expeditionary Force had been tasked with holding the Mons-Condé Canal. It was hoped their arrival would be a game changer for France after they’d had great trouble in holding back the advancing German forces. These new troops, Private Godley and the Royal Fusiliers included, were Enquiries: 01342 300152 Please mention us when responding to adverts

approaching down the canal towards the bridge, then infantry, creeping cautiously through the woods. Soon a solid strong firing line was established across the water, opposite Godley and the Fusiliers. Before long a bloody battle ensued, men were being killed in scores. Naturally the two British machine guns on either side of the bridge were being incessantly targeted by the A Company 4th Battalion Royal Fusiliers on one of the few breaks in Mons, August 22, 1914. These men would soon be involved in defending the Mons-Conde Canal.
some of the most highlytrained soldiers in Europe at the time. When the men reached the canal they were exhausted, having marched for 20 miles with no sleep. They went to work immediately, fortifying their position in the little time they had, sandbags were filled and rudimentary fortifications set up. Godley was attached to a machine gun section, along the Nimy railway bridge which was one of the few access points across the Mons-CondĂŠ Canal. Holding that bridge meant everything. Two machine guns were positioned on a wooded shoreline either side of the bridge. The men slept little that night, there was still work toCOMMUNITY be done, but they could also BUSINESS DIRECTORY hear the Germans preparing for an attack. living
After a night of tension but no action, by the morning, a German scouting party was spotted across the canal: an officer looking through binoculars and six men on horseback. The Fusiliers opened fire on them and only two men escaped. The escapees must have mistaken these riflemen for nothing more than an advanced scouting party for around hour later, in a shocking, audacious move, a column of German troops started to march down the road. The Fusiliers must have been surprised by this move, they opened fire on this tightly packed group, scattering them with intense rifle and machine gun fire. The Germans beat a hasty retreat to regroup, only to prepare for a second assault which would demonstrate the full might of their forces. It started with artillery, Living

Germans. Both positions were cramped, with mere sandbag walls as protection. There was only room for one gunner at a time. Lieutenant Dease who was in command of Godley’s section, continually checked on the gun crews, ensuring that they could maintain a constant fire. Godley’s job was to help supply ammunition to the guns. Gunners were being killed and had to be hauled away before the next gunner could take his place. Dease showed huge bravery but was tragically killed while attending his gunners. Suddenly both machine guns on either side fell silent with no one left to man them and in that moment the Germans made their move, pushing forwards. Panic gripped the British troops, and a call went out for anyone who knew how to operate the guns. Private Godley stepped forward to volunteer. Under heavy fire, he cleared COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY debris and moved the body of his Lieutenant, Dease and living
After these severe losses, orders came through for the British battalion to urgently withdraw back to the River Marne, where they hoped they would be able to stop the German’s next advance on to Paris. Godley was to be left behind at the bridge to cover the retreat. For Godley, there was little chance of survival at worst, and at best he would assuredly be taken a prisoner of war. As his comrades pulled out, the young private maintained his incessant fire, forcing the Germans to keep their heads down thus preventing them from firing on the retreating soldiers. Godley maintained this singular position, a man alone against the full force of the well organised German advance for a two hour stretch, keeping up the constant salvo into the tree line to his front. He was being targeted continuously with shells landing all around him, either from German rifles or artillery fire. A piece of shrapnel embedded itself in his back, a rifle bullet hit him in the head;
with blood now streaming from two possibly mortal wounds, he yet maintained his position and continued firing. The bullets stopped only when Godley finally ran out of ammunition. His final act of courage was to dismantle the machine gun and throw it into the canal before he was captured. Godley was sent to Berlin where surgeons removed bullets from his head and back and he had surgery for skin grafts, his back alone requiring 150 stitches. When he was fit enough he was transferred to a POW camp at Doberitz. It was here that the American Ambassador (America had not joined in the war at this point) first told the private that he had been awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest military honour available to a British soldier and the first of the war (along with Lieutenant M J Dease who received it posthumously). Alf Bastin, another prisoner of war at the camp, in his memoirs, outlined the story. At the time it had been thought that Godley had not survived but it was eventually discovered that he was alive. His award was gazetted on the 25th November 1914. It

A HERO OF HEROES: SIDNEY GODLEY VC CONTINUED
was later reported in the East Grinstead Observer of 26th February 1916 that Godley, ‘who won the VC but is now a prisoner of war in Germany, had the honour of being invited to dine with German officers on Christmas Day because they understand the VC in England was equal to the Iron Cross in Germany’. Godley remained a prisoner of war for four years until in 1918 he was able to walk out of the camp when the guards deserted their posts during the revolution in Berlin. He made his way to Denmark and from there returned to England. His VC was presented by King George V in the ballroom of Buckingham Palace on 15th February 1919. The Mayor of Lewisham (where he’d resided) later welcomed him home; he was presented with 50 guineas and a copy of the Lewisham Roll of Honour. During his life he never ceased to attend ceremonies commemorating the war. In 1938 the people of Mons presented Godley with a special medal. The Mayor of Mons held a special lunch where Godley was guest of honour. In 1939, nearly twenty-five years after the Battle of Mons took place, a party of fifty men from the Royal Fusiliers attended the unveiling of a new bridge at Nimy. During the service a plaque commemorating the heroism of Lt. Dease and Pte. Godley was unveiled. In all Godley made seven visits to COMMUNITY DIRECTORY Mons, theBUSINESS last being 1939. In 1940 the plaque was taken
down from the Nimy Bridge for safekeeping for the duration of the Second World War, it was put back in 1961. Sidney spent his last days in St. Margaret’s Hospital, Epping where he died on 29th June 1957, aged 67. He was buried in Loughton cemetery with full military honours. The Royal Fusiliers provided a bearer party and fired a volley over the grave. In 1976, a new housing estate at Bexley was named after Godley and in the 1980s, a housing block in Tower Hamlets was named after him too. On 23rd August 1998, exactly 94 years to the day of the battle, East Grinstead paid its own tribute to Sidney Godley in the form of a Blue Plaque placed at East Court – as his childhood home had been demolished. In 2012, Spink UK offered the Godley medal group for sale. It went to a private collector for £276,000, far exceeding its' pre-sale estimate of £140180,000. Commenting on the sale, Oliver Pepys of Spink, said: "The Godley V.C. is one of the most distinguished medal groups of the Great War. I am
delighted that the sale drew attention to such a valiant man, who through his actions at Mons set a standard that the British Tommy would aspire to for the rest of the war. He brought honour to his regiment and that legacy will live on, as a sign of what he endured for his country." In 2014 a slab of remembrance in his honour was laid in the High street, in front of East Grinstead’s war memorial. Godley’s grandson was in attendance, at the time he said to East Grinstead online, “Grandad was from East Grinstead and he never ever forgot that – or lost his country burr,” (referring to the now less common Sussex accent), “People in East Grinstead have never forgotten Sidney Godley, and now they never will. Grandad will always be here, at the heart of the town.” And we will always be very proud of a born and bred East Grinstead hero. With grateful thanks to the Felbridge & District History Group (based on notes by Iain W Tidey) for their contribution to this article and the East Grinstead Museum.

So what if its cold and raining? It just means there are more puddles to jump in.... As the weather begins to change, encourage your children to keep playing outside even if its cold and wet. Not only does it keep them active & healthy, all that fresh air builds up appetites, helps them burn off energy and it definitely helps them to sleep well at night! These days children often spend more time playing indoors than they do outdoors but its here they have the space to run, explore, jump, play hide & seek, climb and make noise.
get warm again. Avoid wearing wellies in winter unless they have fleecy linings or thick socks, as they don’t keep toes warm otherwise.
• If you are out on a walk try a scavenger
or treasure hunt to give them something to collect along the way. Sticks, conkers, feathers, stones, pebbles, pine cones children often like ‘a collection’.
Here’s some top tips on how to lure them away from screens and keep them happy outdoors:
• Look out for animals, birds, wildflowers and
fungi when you are out and about - The Woodland Trust and the Wildlife Trusts have some great spotter sheets that you can download and take out with you.
• Make sure you have the right clothes - this
is so important. Think ‘layers’ when the temperature drops: thermals, thick socks, waterproof trousers & jacket, hats that cover their ears and warm gloves. Scarves are fine but for young children they can get a bit annoying (and often lost) so try a snood or neck warmer instead. Keeping the hands and feet warm and dry are key though, as once those are cold its really hard to
• Look out for animal tracks and search for bugs under rocks and logs.
• On a really cold day a flask of something warm to drink definitely helps.
• A small bottle of bubbles is always a very handy thing to have in your bag if you children under 5. Or try some games to keep them active and warm.
It’s outdoors where children have the freedom to play, so lets get them outdoors climbing trees and not indoors climbing the walls! Suzanne Mark, Treehoppers Forest Kindergarten, East Grinstead.

Helping to keep your home spick and span
Clean Your Fridge: A mix of salt and sparkling water can be used to clean and disinfect the inside of your refrigerator, a nice way to keep chemical cleaners away from your food.
Grease: Remove a fresh grease spot on the fabric by covering it with salt. Wait for the salt to absorb the grease, then gently brush the salt away. Repeat until the spot is gone, put in the laundry as usual.
Neutralize Fridge Odours. Even after cleaning odours can endure. Fortunately, soda bicarbonate can help freshen a smelly fridge by neutralizing bad odours; it eliminates them, rather than just masking their smell.
De-odourise bins: Sprinkle soda bicarbonate before cleaning bins to help remove stubborn odours.

The Bluebell puts the Peddle to the Metal
Last month the Bluebell Railway threw open the doors of their new, exciting locomotive exhibition, SteamWorks! Visitors can now get close-up with displays of historic locomotives and interactive experiences.
The Bluebell now boasts one of the largest collections of historic steam locomotives outside of the National Railway Museum in York. Those on static display include 1875 built ‘Stepney’, which hauled the Bluebell’s first passenger train in August 1960. Plus, a full-size mock-up of the locomotive where members

STREAMWORKS CONTINUED
The exhibition completes the first phase of Accessible Steam Heritage Project, a huge and in-depth project, which has cost £1.5m overall and was made possible thanks to a grant of £1.1m from the Heritage Lottery Fund plus additional financial, labour and other contributions from the railway’s loyal supporters. Steamworks! is a culmination of 21 months of design, building work and exhibition fit out; it’s designed to be both fun and educational for people of all ages, but particularly the young.
Helping our Girls might not have a mum or big sister to shop for them if they feel too awkward. Since the project was launched, the response from the East Grinstead community has been overwhelming. Within a month we had enough money to buy the boxes to go into the schools, collection bins, bags for the pants and tights to go in and enough products to fill 3 boxes for EG’s secondary schools. A team of lovely local ladies have also offered their help and support.
The Red Box Project is an initiative that quietly ensures that no young woman misses out on her education because of her period. We place constantly stocked red boxes of sanitary ware in schools aiming to reach those who may not be able to afford these vital items.
The current collection bins are in The Mug Tree Tea Shop, St Mary’s primary school, Kiddies Corner toddler group, The Haven Centre, Crawley Down (Friday mornings only) East Grinstead Tennis, Squash and Racketball Club (Saturday morning only) or donations can be dropped off at 81 Lingfield Road, EG or 68 Copthorne Road, Felbridge.
The project was initiated by 3 friends in 2017, after reading about period poverty. They were angered at the idea that young women were having to miss out on their education. Their solution was to collect donations of sanitary products, pants and tights from the community.
What do we need? Pants from ages 10 to 12 years up to size 16, black tights, from sizes age 12 to size 16, pads, packs of 12/17. redboxprojecteg@hotmail.com. Find us on Facebook.

AUTUMN TRENDS
Sofas and Soft Interiors
Interior trends are going natural! Grey is definitely still extremely popular, but is gradually shifting to warmer, earthier, friendlier tones of neutral – oatmeal, sand, dusty pinks, soft terracottas. Natural stonewashed linens are on the up, informally styled with layers of other textures to create a cosy, sumptuous look with plenty of depth.
look. Start with a dusty pastel shade and layer up with a Navajo print or two, or velvet cushions and a sheepskin. Add a sisal rug and a fiddle leaf fig and you’ve got the look - the more textures the better!
Prints are earthy too with a nomadic, freespirited feel – rustic-luxe. With the focus on sustainability – animal-free leathers and vegetable dyed fabrics. And velvets definitely haven’t had their day yet, with internet searches rising by 400% this year! There are plenty of practical stain-resistant velvets out there these days in every colour under the sun – such a practical option of families and pets – we call it ‘paw-friendly’. OfCOMMUNITY course,BUSINESS you DIRECTORY can customise an existing neutral sofa with printed or textured cushions or throws to achieve this new, warm, natural

SOFAS AND SOFT INTERIORS TRENDS
Dark paint colours are still the thing – providing a dramatic backdrop for an equally dark velvet or printed sofa. Large plants look so great against a dark wall – perfectly Instagramable! But nothing’s set in stone and there are many ‘looks’ out there to choose from – although Instagram and trends are a source of inspiration and can serve as a guide when you’re looking to re-decorate or furnish your home, don’t forget that what makes an interior unique is the personal touch you bring to it. Decorate with objects that are valuable to you, remind you of good memories, or simply make you feel something. In short, trust yourself! Choosing a colour scheme can be a bit daunting, so look at the things you already have a love of as a starting point. Have a look at your favourite clothes in your wardrobe, for instance and go from there. If you’re thinking about a new sofa, bed or chair, come and see us at Sofas & Stuff in Eridge, near Tunbridge Wells, with some photos of your room and we will happily help you choose the perfect new addition to your home. Give us a call on 01892 572309 or email us eridge@sofasandstuff.com
