Welcome to our October issue. This month our magazine is jam-packed with localinterest features from EG Born & Bred ‘Jon Emmett, A Sailor’s Life for me!’ on how he came to be an Olympic Sailing trainer to ‘From the Bluebell Railway to East Grinstead’. We recently received this message from Barbara Stovold of the East Grinstead Society: ‘Many thanks for your continued support and a special thanks for supporting our Local Heritage Week in both the August and September editions. This publicity made a huge contribution to a very successful week. Best regards, Barbara’. So if you’re a community group, local charity, etc. please drop us a line so we can assist with your promotion. Jon Emmett, A Sailor’s life for me! Jon Emmett, East Grinstead born and bred, has come a long way since his time in TS Resolution (EG’s Nautical Training Corps) where he literally ‘learned the ropes’. This summer his student, Chinese Lijia Xu, took Gold at the Olympics in the Women’s Laser Radial class; China’s second ever Gold in sailing. Here’s a Q&A with Jon, followed by information about TS Resolution:

Jon and Lijia Xu

Give us a brief description about your background from your days in TS resolution to now? My parents were always so supportive there was never any pressure, just encouragement. So I had lots of opportunities through the TS Resolution to learn leadership skills, working in a team and discover new activities. Originally I guess I was more of a canoeist, but at University it was crunch time and I chose sailing…

I have always enjoyed sport but I think sailing is the only one I have ever really excelled at. The fact that it’s so dynamic (there are so many elements to winning) made it really appeal to me. It is not only a purely physical contest, there is a strong strategic element, and preparation and planning is very important, all of which I enjoy. I was good at maths and science so I went to Loughborough University to read Chemical engineering in 1995, which now seems a very long time ago. It was in that same year that I finished runner up to Ben Ainslie in the Youth National Championships held in Largs, Scotland. I then became his training partner for the Youth World Championships that year.

Jon and his father

The day after I graduated, my university sent me off with a blessing to be a training partner for Shirley Robertson who took gold in Sydney. It was at this point that I realised that I wished to be a full time sailor/ coach and not an engineer! It is strange living your life in a four year cycle but that is the way it is, having been involved in the Olympics for 12 years now.

Tell us about the amazing success of your student Lijia Xu winning Gold at this year’s Olympics Well it was certainly the hardest job I have ever had. The Chinese team spent less time in the Olympic venue than any other team, so we had to be extremely efficient with our training. Also I only started working with ‘Lily’ a little over a

year before the Olympic games, so we had to hit the ground running. Luckily we really clicked and we have always been able to communicate well together. She was incredibly hard working and of course talented, but the Gold medal

| October 2012 • Please mention East Grinstead Living when responding to adverts

could not have been closer with just one point separating four girls going into the final race, meaning any one of them could have got the Gold medal and to add even more pressure the girl who finished fourth out of the four girls was going to go

Jon Emmett continued home with nothing - as there are only three medals. Lily is now a huge public figure in China: she has to date signed over 10,000 autographs, so many, that she had to change her signature from traditional to simplified Chinese to save time. Before heading back to China, she was chosen to carry the Chinese flag at the Olympic closing ceremony - a huge honour when you consider how many other Chinese Olympic gold medallists there were. What does a typical ‘day-in-the-life’ entail? A typical day will involve three or more training sessions, a weights session, sailing session, pilates session and an aerobic session. Sometimes in the evening I will do a taekwondo class.

I travel all around the country and indeed the world through my sailing activities and I always do my very best to see friends who live near the regattas which I am racing or coaching at. Maintaining these lifelong friendships is very important to me. What awards/recognitions have you received over the years? I am a multiple National, European and World Champion but nothing has compared to helping Lily win her Gold medal this year. I still have very clear goals myself and in 2013 I hope to win the Master World Championships… Our fingers are crossed for Jon…

The East Grinstead Nautical Training Corps Group for both girls and boys aged between 8-18 years. As an organisation we aim to help young people develop their skills through nautical based training; where opportunities are provided to explore a wide range of experiences and activities which encourage the cadets to develop self-confidence and a sense of self worth. Cadets have the opportunity to take part in exciting adventures on and off the water, team building challenges and to have their imagination stretched. Activities include sailing, kayaking, rowing, rafting orienteering, canoeing, 1st aid, camping, cycling, running, athletics, swimming, craft skills and the marching band. At present we reside at the Wallis Centre on Monday from 7-9pm. We also hold band practise at the Old Court House, East Court on Tuesday evening 6:30 8pm for our newly resurrected Marching Band, which was last seen over 20 years ago.

Beachy Head Marathon Joan Hammersley (from the fundraising committee) and Ian Watkins (Chairman) are about to embark on their first ever marathon – The Beachy Head Marathon on October 27th, a tough first choice as it is very hilly! Their plan is to raise funds to help the

ship relocate to new premises. If you would like to donate then go to www.justgiving.com/ntc. or send a cheque to us. Payable to TS Resolution NTC, to Ian Watkins 98 Maypole Road, Ashurst Wood, West Sussex, RH19 3RE. Alternatively send a text to 70070 with the message RESO12 £ (numerical value) e.g. RESO12£5. Thank you.

New Venue We are currently looking for a hall/classroom which we can occupy at least twice a week. The premises need to have permanent storage facilities. If you are in the position to offer a permanent home for our ship or know of somewhere that fits our criteria please contact: Either C/O Mr Philip Myszyn on 01342 870591 Or Chairman Mr Ian Watkins on 01342 822311 or email: mt1@supanet.com We are also always looking for officers/adult helpers who have the ability to motivate the cadets. If you feel you are able to help, please do contact either of the above people, as we would love to hear from you. Or if you would like to become a cadet and get involved in this happening youth group then contact us NOW!!!!! For further information please visit the Corps website: www.ntc.org.uk/resolution

British Wildlife Centre David Mills was a Farmer for 30 years before he gave it up to start the now nationally renowned British Wildlife Centre, which, luckily enough, is right on our doorstep… Here we find out more:

What was your inspiration for starting the British Wildlife Centre? For 30 years I was a dairy farmer with a herd of pedigree Jersey cows, and then in 1994 I sold the cows and converted the farm into the British Wildlife Centre. Animals have been a life-long passion and it was a dream of mine to run my own zoo. Being a farmer, working the land and being surrounded by wildlife, the natural progression was to create a Centre where people could learn about nature and be aware of the wonderful wildlife species which share our space.

What was the hardest part to establishing the centre? Obtaining planning permission for the change of use, and convincing the local authority that it was a good idea!

What is your goal with the centre? Our ethos is ‘Conservation through Education’. We feel it is vital for children to have an opportunity to see and learn about our own native wildlife, to develop a life-long interest in its protection and survival. From very small beginnings the Centre has grown into a place of national recognition, home to one of the finest collection of native species in the country. Visitors can see the smallest harvest mouse through to our largest land mammal, the red deer; plus rare species such as red squirrels, water voles and pine martens - animals that would be now almost impossible to view in nature.

Regularly used by the BBC Natural History Unit to film a particular species for programmes such as Springwatch, it’s also been used by CBeebies and many independent film makers.

What are your future plans? Conservation is very close to our hearts and our 16 acre wetlands nature reserve is currently being extended by another 10 acres to provide further habitat for a huge variety of insects, birds and mammals.

What has been the best highlight so far? One of the highlights of running the BWC is watching the public’s enthusiastic reaction over the years, that’s been a real delight. It’s been a huge pay off for that big initial risk! We strive to be innovative and are always trying new things. High spots in recent years have included the launch of our walk-through red squirrel enclosure in their own wooded Cospe. This was the very first enclosure of its kind in the UK and we were honoured to have Dame Judi Dench open this in 2010. It’s been a big success. Earlier this year we launched our unique Nocturnal House for native night time species and we were privileged to have wildlife TV presenter, naturalist Chris Packham cut the ribbon. Chris is a good friend of the Centre and enjoys the fantastic photographic opportunities available here.

From the Bluebell Railway to East Grinstead The train arriving is the 11 am from Sheffield Park

As we saw last month, the Earl of Sheffield was an influential figure in 19th century Sussex, not just as a landowner but also as the lead figure in the promotion and construction of the Lewes and East Grinstead Railway, the precursor to the town’s direct rail link to London via Oxted. Previously the town’s link had been a tenuous connection via Three Bridges. The new railway also provided a direct link to Haywards Heath and Brighton, with connections at Lewes to Eastbourne. Closure of what is now the Bluebell Railway, in 1958, followed by closure of the Three Bridges to Tunbridge Wells line in1967, severed these links, leaving the town at the end of a long branch line from London. The reopening of a five mile section of the former Lewes and East Grinstead line between Sheffield Park and Horsted Keynes in 1960 led to the establishment of preserved railways throughout the country and, from that small beginning, the Bluebell is now poised to restore East Grinstead’s links to the south. An extension from Horsted Keynes to Kingscote in 1994 was the first indication that the Bluebell’s long term aim of restoring those links was practicable but the extension was only made possible through the painstaking re-purchase of the trackbed, sold off to adjoining landowners following closure of the line in 1958. The final extension to East Grinstead, has taken longer than the railway had hoped, delayed by the need to raise some £4m to remove the town’s legacy of a quarter mile long landfill site in the cutting between Imberhorne Lane and Hill Place Bridges, immediately to the south of the viaduct. The landfill had been placed there by the former East Grinstead Town Council in the 1960s, a time when it was believed that the car would be the answer to all transport problems.

the project, but subject to the necessary funds being raised and to the weather remaining kind over the winter, it is planning to open the extension to the town in the Spring of 2013. The Bluebell will then provide a number of exciting possibilities. • Regular train services with a 24 mile round steam hauled train ride between East Grinstead and Sheffield Park • Dinner (Saturday evening) or lunch (Sunday) on board the renowned Pullman Dining Car train, the Golden Arrow • Afternoon tea on the Wealden Rambler Tea Train • Stunning views of the Sussex countryside in both Spring and Autumn from the Observation Car • Victorian Picnic and Christmas trains • Santa Specials • Visits via the Bluebell to the National Trust’s Sheffield Park and Gardens In the future the Bluebell may have even more to offer the town in further restoring its lost link to Haywards Heath. It already owns the trackbed of the former branch from Horsted Keynes to Ardingly while the section between Ardlingly and Haywards Heath is still in place. This raises the tantalising prospect of being able to travel to the coast by train once more. By David Cockram

The Bluebell has now succeeded in cutting a path through the mountain of rubbish, although it still needs to raise in the region of £500,000 to complete 14 | October 2012 • Please mention East Grinstead Living when responding to adverts

Beauty tips for thrifty times Cosmetics from your Cupboard

by East Grinstead Resident, Helen Blackman MGBT

Flexibility is a wonderful characteristic and is one that most women have to adopt in their lives changing from “Mum” to “Executive” or “Nurse” at the drop of a hat. So flexible products can not only save us time, but also money. Three of these are lemon, honey and Vaseline. These three items can be used in a host of different ways. Lemon has a strong bleaching effect, but is also cleansing and can be mixed with other ingredients, or used alone. For example, if you are a blonde, mix pure lemon juice in a final rinse for your hair to brighten it. Mix it with sea salt or sugar to make an effective exfoliant for hands, feet or face (mind your eyes!) and an old trick from my Grandmother – after using lemon juice for something else, keep the two half “cups” and sit with each under your elbows. This will take away that slightly brown colouring that you can get and remove dead skin cells. Rinse well with water and then apply Vaseline for smooth elbows. A mask for oily or acne-prone skin requires 1 egg white and a teaspoon of lemon juice. Beat the egg white and add the lemon juice and apply to the face avoiding the eyes. This will tighten the pores; absorb oil and the protein in the egg helps repair damaged skin. When I worked in cosmetic manufacturing our Cosmetic Chemist always said that Vaseline was one of the best moisturisers around. Personally, I have used it on my face when the weather has been particularly harsh and my skin has become parched and pink and

Quote “Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted.” Albert Einstein

certainly although very gunky when first applied, it does soak in overnight leaving your skin feeling so much better. It can also be used as a lip salve and if you add a little of your favourite lipstick can become a lip gloss. Another good trick is to use it to tame wayward eyebrows. Brush your brows upwards and trim any extra long ones with scissors before brushing back into place with a little Vaseline on the brush. This will hold them in place and also add a little sheen which makes them look healthy. Finally, honey – well known for its anti-bacterial properties and its general health-giving qualities, can be used as a cleanser (very sticky at first) by applying an almond sized dollop to the face and working all over in a pressing/rolling motion until the honey goes cloudy and then wash off with warm water. The cloudiness is caused by the dead cells which have been removed from the surface of your skin. If mixed with a mashed banana, this makes a good mask for dry skin, and if you mix a tablespoon of honey and teaspoon of lemon juice in hot water it makes a very soothing medication for a sore throat. It pays to think laterally about the items in your store cupboard – many of them can be used for far more than eating! St John Brown I became involved with Meridian FM in the middle of 2010. I saw the publicity when the station got its license in March 2010 and the small print said “if you would like to be involved, please get in touch.” I did - and somewhat surprisingly they didn’t reject me. I grew up and was at school in Kent, went abroad in the 1980s and lived in Hong Kong, Singapore, and the Netherlands for 16 years. We moved back as a family to the UK to East Grinstead in 1998 as two of our children went to Ashdown House school. I was lucky enough to go to school at King’s Canterbury which had a fantastic music department. This was tied in with a father who had an idiosyncratic but genuine love for music, so there was always music at home. Classical Meridian is one of the Station’s specialist areas, and is on Wednesdays at 8.00pm. My co-presenter is Madelaine Forrest. The first goal is to promote local concerts and musicians – so it’s been a real pleasure having people like David Pinnegar, Simon Austen, D’Arcy Trinkwon, Adolfo Barabino, Mark Padmore, and BBC Young Musician Laura van de Heijden come on the show. Do get in touch if you would like to come on. Beyond that I try to present a wide selection of classical music – both popular and less well known. Do give it a try – and if you like classical music you will surely enjoy it !

1. Keep electrical, computer and appliance cords tangle-free: Neatly fold the cord and pass it through a toilet paper tube before plugging in. Put plastic-film over the tube to strengthen if you wish.

2. Keep weeds out of paving cracks: Sprinkle handfuls of bicarb of soda onto the concrete and simply sweep into the cracks. The added sodium makes it far less hospitable to dandelions and their friends.

Suffering from aches & pains? Do you suffer from Back pain? Migraines or Headaches? Neck pain? Leg pain? Shoulder pain? Arm pain? Arthritis? We give effective, friendly care... ‘I had been off work for 13 months and I am now fully back to work and able to return to some of the sports which I hadn’t played since the prolapsed disc first occurred…’ M.F. GET FIT IN THE COMFORT OF YOUR OWN HOME Michael Wall, established his Hire Fitness business 3 years ago & has built up a large portfolio of clients hiring & selling fitness equipment for use in the home He also supplies commercial equipment to gyms, offices, salons and studios. People are increasingly choosing to hire in their homes for many reasons, most often for convenience & lack of time or inclination to go the gym. Parents can also look after their children whilst they exercise at home. All Hire Fitness models are of the highest quality, robust, good looking, with excellent computer functions. There is a hire- to- buy scheme where clients can try a machine prior to making a purchase. The Power Plate is his most popular model, it can burn 350 calories in 10 minutes. Other benefits include cellulite busting, improved blood circulation, stronger bones but most of all – improved toning.

Call Michael at Hire Fitness on 0845 094 2292 or 07932 139386 or email on mwall@hirefitness.co.uk www.hirefitness.co.uk “Before I contacted Hire Fitness, I was not feeling good about myself, and was rather overweight. I am really busy and don’t have time to go to the gym. I hired 3 pieces of equipment for 3 months and Michael kindly threw in the rower for free. It has been hard work but really satisfying to lose weight and to have a new outlook on life. Even my wife says that she quite fancies me, so that can’t be bad! Thank you Hire Fitness.” Jamie, Sussex info@egliving.co.uk • tel: 01342 300152

The word “festival” stuck as soon as it came time to name the musical event I am organizing in Forest Row between 2 - 4 November 2012, because the Ashdown Music Festival will be a truly vibrant and joyous celebration. My plan is to stage a feast of musical entertainment, showcasing the talent of both my London colleagues and that of the local musicians I have played with since I was young. It has long been my ambition to produce a Music Festival that would bring together the spheres of influence that have shaped my career: local artists, young professional colleagues and our fantastic and appreciative local audience. I myself grew up in Forest Row and learned to play the cello with local teacher Marina Logie, who has started many cellists on promising careers. At 13 I won a scholarship to the Yehudi Menuhin School in Surrey, where students are lucky to have the opportunity to travel the UK, Europe and even farther afield, gaining experience in solo playing. After graduating at 18 I trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, gaining a First Class

Degree. I am currently based in London where I am a member of various Chamber ensembles and orchestras; I and am also involved in teaching young musicians. Over the years I have returned regularly to play in Forest Row, often with the Jupiter Chamber Orchestra (as a soloist and Orchestra member) as well as in various Chamber combinations. It is therefore with a feeling of real excitement that I present the Ashdown Music Festival. We’ll be offering up a fizzing cocktail of three unique chamber events over three days, in three different venues, at three different times of day. Please do come and join us if you can: I hope you’ll find there is something to suit every taste. We have a Festival Season ticket (at special price) for those wanting to sample everything on offer, or for any individual tickets please go to the festival website at www.ashdownmusicfestival.co.uk or ring us on 07764681777.

Ashdown Music Festival proudly presents: Friday November 2, Holy Trinity Church, Forest Row, 19:30 The Festival starts with a bang with the award-winning Brodowski Quartet (“New kids on the London Scene”- The Times) . Programme to include Schubert’s seminal work “The Death and the Maiden” and a cracker of a (rarely performed) musical surprise!

Saturday November 3, Long Room, Michael Hall School, Priory Road, Forest Row, 16.00 Feast your ears on the amazing combinations of tones produces by Britain’s only critically acclaimed cello octet, Cellophony. (“Just blows you away....thrown off with terrific panache” The Daily Telegraph) Programme to include works by Schubert, Barber and Bach!

Antique clock repair Having recently moved and set up a new clock workshop in the heart of the historic town of East Grinstead, Tally talks to John Carpenter, an Antiquarian Horologist and a Craft Member of the British Horological Institute about the ins and outs of restoration and repair of antique clocks: What does antique clock repair entail? Clocks suffer from general wear and tear, they get dirty and the oil dries out. Any broken or damaged parts will generally need to be made. New wheels are cut and fitted. Dials can be resilvered or painted using traditional methods, brass work and spandrels cleaned, polished and lacquered. Painted dials retouched or fully restored depending on condition.

What is the most rewarding part of your profession? I am often brought clocks that are over 200 years old and are in a sad state so I especially enjoy the clients genuine reaction once they have seen their fully restored clock ticking away again. For more information you can contact John Carpenter on 01342 458475 or email iamticking@ hotmail.co.uk or you can visit www.antiqueclockrestore.co.uk

What is your background? After attending the 2 year BHI Training course, I worked for Aubrey Brockelhurst, a well-established dealer in fine antique clocks. It was there that my education in the repair and restoration was completed. In 1971 I formed an antique clock sales and restoration business, The Clock Clinic in Putney. As the manager I ran the workshop and built up the business to be successful and well respected until the 1980s when I moved to the country.

The East Grinstead Living asked David Boyle, author and journalist and fellow of the New Economics Foundation (NEF) to provide us with an article about supporting local business. We are very pleased that he agreed to do so, here it is:

WHY WE NEED TO SHIFT OUR SPENDING LOCALLY. Listening to politicians, you get the occasional flash of revelation about just how empty their toolboxes are when it comes to reviving our struggling local economies. It is a whiff of the Emperor’s New Clothes every time this happens. The problem with all of these solutions is that they remain firmly wedded to the idea that the wealth will trickle down to the places where it is needed – when everything suggests that actually it won’t. But struggling local economies do have things in common. They have people with imagination and determination. They have spare resources, wasted land, wasted people, wasted buildings and waste (materials or equipment that could provide the raw materials for new business).

Crucially, they also have money flowing through the area, even if it flows straight out again in payments to big supermarkets or utilities. The real issue for local economies is not how to wait hopelessly for government intervention, but how they can take these elements and knit their economy back together again. That’s one of the key insights of what we call the new economics. You might have places with the same amount of money coming in, but in one of them it gets spent in the supermarket and then it leaves the area straight away. In another place, the income gets passed on from local business to local business, over and over again, like blood. It’s the same money, but every time it changes hands, it creates local wealth. So, it isn’t the total amount of money that’s important. It is the diversity of business, and maybe even the diversity of people that matters, because they can keep money circulating. Local economies are like leaky buckets that never stay full. The objective has to be to keep that money circulating locally for a bit longer. In Cornwall ten years ago, we found that spending £5 in a supermarket chain was about half as useful to the local economy as buying vegetables from a local farm. The implications are pretty

24 | October 2012 • Please mention East Grinstead Living when responding to adverts

far-reaching. If you have a high street where all the stores are owned by big chains, you might be more vulnerable economically than a high street – which might not be nearly as wealthy – where there are lots of interdependent businesses trading with each other. One will survive an economic downturn. One may well not. Of course I am not saying that it doesn’t matter how much money is coming in. But it does matter very much where that money is spent. There are other things that need doing as well. To rebuild local economies, we need a local enterprise infrastructure and a local lending infrastructure, which we no longer have. But the first and most important thing is to use the local businesses which are themselves using local businesses. That keeps the same money circulating and re-circulating. So next time you spend money, see if there is a local company you can spend it with. If everyone shifts just five or ten per cent of their spending locally, even in a small town, it will be able to ride out the recession. David Boyle is a fellow of the New Economics Foundation (www. neweconomics.org). His latest ebook, On the Eighth Day, God Created Allotments, is a history of the allotments movement (www.david-boyle.co.uk).

The East Grinstead Living has grown from strength to strength with 83% of our customers continually renewing because our advertising has proven results.

“When I started my plastering business at the beginning of 2010 I decided to advertise in ‘East Grinstead living’ as the cost was reasonable and it seemed like a good publication. Little did I know just how much of a good idea that was!! Over the following 6 months I would say that around 70% of my leads came from that one 1/4 page advert and when I heard that there was going to be another publication (Ashdown Forest Living) by the same people going out to another area, it was a no brainer to advertise in that one too!” Matt Merrell, MRM Plastering and Building

Lentil and Vegetable Cobbler Serves: 4 adults. Preparation time: 25 mins. Cooking time: 40 mins

What to do: 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C, fan 160°C, gas mark 4. 2. Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan and cook the garlic and onion for 2-3 minutes. Add the celery, parsnip, carrots and cauliflower and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes more. Remove from the heat and add the mushrooms, tomatoes and lentils.

Ingredients: 1. 2. 3. . 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13. 1 . 15. 16. 17. 18.

2 tsp olive oil 1 garlic clove crushed 1 medium onion chopped 2 celery sticks sliced 1 medium-sized parsnip chopped 2 carrots sliced 2 handfuls cauliflowers 2 handfuls mushrooms (cup or button) sliced 1 can chopped tomatoes 75g dried red lentils 2 tbsp cornflour 450ml reduced salt vegetable or chicken stock 1 tbsp fresh parsley chopped 1 pinch ground black pepper 150g self-raising flour 45g low-fat spread 1 egg 30ml semi-skimmed milk

You can substitute any of the vegetables that you dont like with something that you do like.

3. Mix the cornflour with 3-4 tbsp of water and add to the saucepan with the vegetable stock and parsley. Return to the heat and bring to the boil to thicken the mixture. Season with pepper, transfer to a casserole dish, then cover and bake for 20 minutes. 4. Meanwhile, sift the flour into a large bowl. Rub in the low-fat spread with your fingertips. Beat the egg and milk together and add just enough to the dry mixture to make a soft dough. Knead lightly, then roll out on a lightly floured surface to a thickness of 2 cm and cut into 4 cm rounds. 5. Remove the casserole from the oven and raise the temperature to 200°C, fan 180°C, gas mark 6. Arrange the scones around the edge of the dish and brush with the remaining egg and milk. Return to the oven, without a lid, and cook for a further 12-15 minutes, until the scone topping is risen and golden brown.

Tip 1: When cutting out the rounds of dough, avoid twisting the cutter or the scones won’t rise as much.

The English Language ‘All’s fair in love and war’ The premise is that the end justifies the means. This has long been bandied about in the field of war. 2000 years ago Livy said, ‘to those to whom war is necessary, it is just, ’ HISTORY 10 BC. This proverb further expresses that courtship entails the use of any means to become victorious as the ‘force of love’ can not easily be controlled.

The link between love and fighting for a kingdom was already established as a saying by 1606:

The wording we are familiar with today appeared 2 centuries later: ‘All’s fair in love and war’ presents a convenient phrase to justify possibly dubious conduct...

Local History Notes Geoffrey Webb

By 1901 Geoffrey, related to him by marriage, was boarding with Frederick Hanbury who ran the famous Hanbury-Allen family of druggists. At that time Geoffrey was and is described as an artist in stained glass. As an apprentice he had been articled to Sir Ninian Comper, the great Gothic Revival Architect, as had his two brothers. He moved to Sackville House in the High Street in East Grinstead in 1914, his workshop at Brookers Yard in West Street. Harold also moved to East Grinstead about the same time and, although they lived together, they appeared to have always worked separately. Eventually Harold and Christopher became architects rather than stained glass artists, but they, like Geoffrey, have been influentual in many churches across England. Many examples of all their works are to be found in the immediate area around East Grinstead. Five of Geoffrey’s stained glass windows are in St. Mary’s Church in Windmill Lane, East Grinstead. Others in the area are located in St. John the Divine at Felbridge and the parish churches of Oxted, Cowfold, Lindfield and Henfield. Stained glass windows originally mostly depicted scenes from the bible. They were sometimes called “The Poor Man’s Bible”, as in earlier times few of the working classes were able to read or write. The church services would be in Latin and so the pictorial representation of biblical characters and stories was an important part of their understanding. Later, windows were used as memorials to wealthy men or those who had fallen in battle and generally these also had a religious basis. However, Geoffrey designed a group of Alice

Geoffrey Fuller Webb, the well known stained glass artist, was born in Turnham Green in London in 1879. His father, Edward A. Webb, a noted water-colourist, had been born in Versailles, although he was a British subject. In the 1891 census Geoffrey and his older brother, Harold, are shown as boarders at St.Germans Place School in Kidbrook. Their mother, Emily Fuller Howes, had three further children. Marjorie, born in 1882, Ellen, in 1885 and another son, Christopher Rahere, in 1886. Christopher like his two brothers was, initially, also to be a stained glass artist.

in Wonderland characters for a window in the church at Danesbury in Cheshire to celebrate the life of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, better known by his pen name, Lewis Carroll. Dodgson was born there in 1832, the son of the parson and the fourth of eleven children. Geoffrey’s designs are distinctive. He is known for leaving areas of clear or white glass which brings light flooding in to the interiors. This also enhances the coloured glass, in particular the brillant blue, which is often a feature in his work. As with all his work, he “signed “it with a depiction of a spider’s web, a punning reference to his family name. It appears also on the coat of arms of his uncle Sir Aston Webb. He designed the main frontage of Buckingham Palace, Admiralty Arch and the entrance facade of the Victoria and Albert Museum together with many other London landmarks. His local work includes a re-designed St. Leonards Church at Turners Hill in the 1920s and work on Christ’s Hospital at Horsham.

With a keen interest in local affairs his lasting legacy is a series of large canvases advertising plays put on by the amateur drama group, the East Grinstead Repertory Company in the 1920s and 30s. The museum was given several of them by one of his nephews, together with others promoting Jumble Sales and other fundraising activities in aid of local groups. Two examples, “The Devil’s Disciple” and “The Merry Wives of Windsor” are on permanent display in the museum. His illustration of “Rumplestiltskin” formed the introduction to a temporary exhibition some years ago about local amateur dramatic societies called “On With the Show”. Geoffrey’s daughter, Ursula, who married into the Hanbury-Allen family, inherited Sackville House from her father when he died in 1954. On her death she left it to the Landmark Trust. They have sympathetically furnished it and it now provides a comfortable and interesting house for visitors to the area. Something that I am sure would have pleased Geoffrey Webb, given his generosity in sharing his good fortune with others.

When Geoffrey Webb moved to Sackville House it was very dilapidated and he undertook the restoration of this Mediaeval gem. It is one of the few houses in the High Street which still retains it’s original portland. This stretches gently away from the house for over 300 metres. The slope of the land gives far-reaching views across to Ashdown Forest. Typically, Geoffrey shared this vista with all who walked past. He had a grille inserted into the gate at the side of property, thus affording passers-by a glimpse of the spectacular view. It is still giving people the same pleasure today.

Is your weight affecting your health? Weight problems are often triggered by puberty, pregnancy, menopause or simply ageing. In addition medication, stress, change in lifestyle, bad eating or drinking habits can also play a major part with weight problems. The Metabolic Weight Loss Programme addresses these issues resulting in clients losing weight at a rate which is very motivating. Key points of the Metabolic Weight Loss Programme • Expected average weight loss of clients, 10-14lbs a month • Easy to follow • No pills, diet shakes etc. • One-to-one personalised support The most popular aspects of the programme are the quick weight loss, easy to stick to (clients constantly remark that they don’t feel hungry or have cravings) and the one-to-one support which is available 7 days a week.

Pam lost 4 stone, Andrew lost 2 stone “No previous diets

had ever worked – I

have an under-active thyroid, which didn’t

help. Rachel encouraged us all the way and her advice and suggestions were really easy to

follow – we didn’t find ourselves hungry or getting cravings.

The Metabolic Weight Loss Programme very quickly re-educated our diets but it wasn’t at all difficult to keep to. One happy side effect was Andrew‘s indigestion problems disappearing, while my blood pressure improved. We reached our target weights in less than five months but far more than that has been the way it has changed our lives and how we feel about ourselves. A very big personal thank you to Rachel for turning us around.”
