Roofing

PREPARE FOR WINTER!

Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

Local History Notes

Dr. Rogers by Dorothy Hatswell

Dr. John Henry Rogers was a local GP in East Grinstead in the 1850s and 60s. The 1861 census shows him aged 47, unmarried and living with his mother, whose birthplace is shown as Oporto in Portugal, and a servant in Green Hedges Avenue. He had a reputation for helping those people who could not afford to pay, either for his consultation or the medicine. For many years he ran the free dispensary in the High Street. The need for a general dispensary was identified at a public meeting in August 1858. Dr Rogers proffered his services to the charity at its inaugural meeting. He attended the dispensary twice a week until his death. His dedication to good causes had long been established as he had been appointed Deputy Warden at Sackville College five years earlier. The cottage hospital movement was then in its infancy. It was started in Cranbrook in Surrey, in 1859, by the vicar, the Rev. Sapter, who donated a cottage for the purpose. The doctor who ran it, Albert Napper, had, as his first patient, a man whose leg he had to amputate! The second hospital opened at Fowey in Cornwall and the third in Bourton on the Water; these provided the catalyst for East Grinstead’s hospital. The Rev Charles Crawfurd, was a curate in Bourton on the Water during the period that their hospital was being opened and took an active interest in the project. When he returned to East Court he doubtless extolled the virtues of having such a facility. Dr. Rogers, with his background in helping the poor and sick, would have been very receptive to the idea. Rogers decided that he would open a cottage hospital in East

First Cottage Hospital

Grinstead. He used a cottage he owned across the road from his house in Green Hedges Avenue, It was only the fifth such hospital in the country. He furnished it using money from his own pocket; the expenses of £167.9s.0d (£167.45), covered the cost of the seven beds and all the equipment he needed. It seems that one of the beds was for the resident nurse, Mary Batchelor, who was given as the only resident of the hospital in 1871. Presumably there were no patients admitted on that particular night. The hospital opened its doors in early October 1863. The first patient admitted was a woman from Turners Hill with an encysted tumour on her head. No mention is made of anaesthesia, which was then not in general use by all doctors - James Young Simpson had discovered the anasthetic properties of chloroform merely sixteen years earlier. The next patient recorded in Dr. Rogers’ case book is a girl with an

ingrowing toenail. He wrote in detail in his case book, which is on display in the East Grinstead museum: “I brought her gradually under giving ½ drachm every five minutes. She gave a slight shriek when I divided the nail, but manifested no further evidence of sensibility.” I think it can be inferred from this that the first patient also had the benefit of chloroform. Over the next eleven years he treated over 300 patients. In his case book he records in meticulous detail the treatment of all of them. In cases where the diet was important, he itemises this too. Beef tea, thickened with arrowroot, and toast were prescribed for one patient with a stomach complaint, for example. He was a keen botanist and took great pride in his own garden and greenhouse. He also cultivated

the garden behind the hospital and filled it with colourful flowers. The pleasant outlook his patients had must have aided their recovery. It is strikingly similar to Archibald McIndoe’s insistence on having cheerful paint and curtains into Ward 3, where his Guinea Pigs were, eighty years later. In 1874 Dr. Rogers said; “In this district there are very many wealthy residents and landed proprietors but scarcely any volunteered to help me. … At length after having experienced for some years the meanness of the wealthy and too often the ingratitude of the poor, I closed the hospital.” However, he auctioned the furniture and other contents of the hospital and invested the money for any future ventures of that kind. It was to be a further thirteen years when a serious accident to Lord Henry Neville’s groom drew attention to the necessity of re-opening a hospital. This time the wealthier members of the community did raise the money needed. There had been £200 left in the funds when Dr. Rogers left. The investment now stood at over £300. This provided some of the capital for the new venture.

So Rogers had left a legacy to this town which continues to the present day as the Queen Victoria Hospital. Rogers had been appointed Warden of Sackville College in 1871. He had started a distribution of gifts to the elderly, donated by friends and neighbours. All met in the College Hall and had a pleasant meeting. It became known as the “Sackville Dole”. Any money received was spent on a weekly allowance of meat. He formed a Neale Memorial Library and planted a 17th Century Garden in the grounds of the College, thus persuing his botanical interests. He died suddenly on October 18th 1879 and was buried in the churchyard of St. Swithun’s Church a week later. His obituary in the church magazine for November of that year reads: “... long will he be known, and much missed as a man of general culture and artistic taste.” The East Grinstead Museum is curating a temporary exhibition celebrating the 150th anniversary of the opening of the first hospital in the town. Called “A Cottage Hospital Grows Up”, it runs from October 2nd until February 9th 2014.

STANDEN

Your Local National Trust Gem

S

tanden is your local National Trust property in East Grinstead. Most noted for being designed by Philip Webb and decorated by Morris & Co. it was built as a home for James and Margaret Beale and their family during the Arts and Crafts period of the late 19th and early 20th century. Since 1972 Standen has been in the care of the National Trust and welcomes over 80,000 visitors annually. There are four main aspects to Standen making a visit worthwhile at any time: the house; the garden; the woodlands; and special events. The house is the epitome of a home of the selfmade wealthy of the period, with its decoration and artefacts from the Arts and Crafts Movement being of particular significance. Whilst no longer a private home, Standen retains that subtle ‘lived in’ atmosphere, giving visitors the sensation of being guests of the Beale family, and making a visit far more interesting and delightful. For example, the old

gramophone which, although not a family heirloom, can be heard playing old 78s as one progresses through the house, and there is often a volunteer playing the piano, on which accomplished visitors may also play a spontaneous tune or two. After 1936, when Margaret Beale died, and until the National Trust took over, Standen became increasingly expensive to maintain - with obvious consequences. In the early days of its ownership the Trust, with Standen’s first Administrators the Arts and Crafts collectors, Arthur and Helen Grogan, concentrated on restoring the house and contents including acquiring furniture, paintings and other household items. The descendents of James and Margaret have also contributed by donating family heirlooms, one of the most important being Margaret’s wedding dress from 1870, which, because of its fragility, can only be on show from time-to-time. Margaret Beale was a keen gardener and she was closely involved in creating a 12-acre hillside garden

of originality, complexity and beauty for the enjoyment of her husband James, their children and extended family. The gardens fortunes waned after Margaret’s death and much of the original layout and planting schemes were lost. Recent research has revealed significant documentary evidence of the garden in former times, including lists of plants (some very rare) which Margaret imported from abroad. In 2012 the Trust gave Standen 1/2 million over a period of five years to return the gardens to their original design and condition. Already the results of this investment are evident as you approach Standen down the entrance drive.

mums the Word...

Traditional Halloween Recipe: Toffee Apples Ingredients: 8 red apples (or 9 small ones) wooden skewers 450g (1 lb) sugar 150ml (1/4 pint) water 30g (1 oz) butter 1 tablespoon glucose optional: 3 drops red food colouring (as desired)

Mothers are the heart of any household. I try to spend as much time with my children as I possibly can while also fulfilling my professional duties. It is tricky, but I think I manage it. Helena Bonham Carter

What to do: 1. Wash and dry the apples and put in the skewers.

A Mothers Quote of the month

Anyone for a Spot of Leaf Spotting? Take the kids to try to find the most beautiful/unusual Autumn leaves - you can keep these for Arts and Crafts days later on in the year or even frame the best (once dried of course).

2. Place sugar and water into a saucepan, stir over heat until the sugar is dissolved. Then add butter and glucose, cook rapidly, without stirring until it reaches 150 degrees C or, if you don’t have a sugar thermometer, then test the mixture by dropping a teaspoon into cold water, it should form a very hard ball. If this doesn’t happen, then boil for a little longer, otherwise the toffee won’t set on the apples.

You can visit: visitwoods.org.uk and see the section, ‘Autumn leaf spotting’, print off the page of possible leaf finds and tick them off as you go along.

3. When the toffee stops boiling, add the food colouring if desired and swirl around.

We suggest you try local Standen Wood - near Standen House. The wood is now in the care of the National Trust and is open to the public for most of the year . It has been owned and managed as a nature reserve since the 1970s and is a haven for birds and is a lovely walk suitable for children.

4. Stand the saucepan in a large bowl of hot water to prevent the toffee from setting. Dip apples into the toffee to coat thoroughly. Stand upright (apple down) on a greased tray to set.

The Ghostly side of Grinstead East Grinstead’s very own expert in the Dark Arts, Professor Mordant Skull, is often to be found prowling the streets of the town around Halloween. His Ghost Walks are the stuff of legend, although to be quite honest they are more hilarious than horrific, and the only one with white hair at the end of it is the Professor himself! In the past, crowds of over a hundred people have joined in the annual Ghostwalks at times taking over most of the High Street. These days the Professor tries to keep things on a more manageable level and you need to keep an eye open on how to join in the tours. The tourist desk at the Library is a good place to ask, 01342 410121 is the number to call. You can also call to book a tour for your own group, so get together with a bunch of family and friends and then meet up for a well-

earned drink afterwards perhaps. Although the Professor leads you a merry dance, all the stories he tells are actual accounts of ghostly goings-on in and around East Grinstead. Not all of them involve headless horsemen or people walking through walls, although some indeed do. One of the stories is based around unnatural events taking place in a town cinema with ghosts in the boiler room! Some of the old buildings in the High Street have their own tales to tell, many involving a certain hostelry with the well-earned reputation as being the most haunted building in town. Now all you need to do to learn more is to pluck up the courage and call the professor.

Poppies take Root A Grass roots (or Poppy roots A!) movement is growing that to mark the centenary of WW1 next year towns, villages and indeed individuals should plant field poppies in front gardens and areas of public land which will not be mown. The poppy is of course a symbol of WWI as a result of the famous poem In Flanders Fields the Poppies Grow by John McCrae. He wrote this in 1915 after burying a close friend killed in the conflict, and noticing how quickly the poppies grew over the newly-dug grave:

In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

It seems such a simple and appropriate tribute which can be done by anyone, anywhere. Some residents in East Grinstead have already come together to mark out an area for seed-sowing in their part of town. Also it is worth mentioning that poppies, being wild flowers, will also encourage more wildlife such as bees. You can sow poppies this month or else wait until the Spring. Here are some simple instructions for planting by our regular garden writer Michael Dongray of Imberhorne Lane Nursery: Papaver Rhoeas Also known as Field Poppy, Flanders Poppy, Corn Poppy Seed can be sown directly where it is to grow in the Autumn or between March to May. Poppy seed needs to be sown on disturbed soil in a sunny position. The seed can be thinly broadcast over the ground and a light covering of soil over the seed will help protect from birds. Germination takes place 4 to 25 days after sowing. Poppy will grow well in impoverished poor soil so fertilising the ground prior to sowing is not required. If there is a prolonged dry spell then watering will be needed. Poppies are self seeding, the seed, which is produced from July onwards, can remain viable in the soil for many years. To make sure self sown seed comes again the ground should be disturbed in the Autumn.

St Catherine’s Hospice This October St Catherine’s Hospice celebrates 30 years of providing specialised end of life care and support to local people and their families across Sussex and Surrey. As we approach this milestone, we’d like to thank everyone who has supported us over the last three decades. We are incredibly grateful for the vital support we receive from people from local communities like East Grinstead. It’s only with that sort of help that we can continue to respond to the needs of people coming to terms with a terminal diagnosis or bereavement. The money raised from donations and collections in East

Grinstead, and the surrounding villages as well as from the recently refurbished shop in Whitehall Parade, London Road, has been invaluable in helping us to reach our 30th year. Over the years people have opened gardens, swum, walked, run, held countless coffee mornings, dances, and sales to support our cause. Additionally, residents who take part in our events, such as the forthcoming East Grinstead Santa Run, also play an important role in raising the profile of the hospice, as well as much needed funds. You can find more information on our Santa Run at www.stch.org.uk. Once again thanks for your ongoing support - here’s to the next 30 years. Shaun O’Leary, Chief Executive – St Catherine’s Hospice

Jollof rice

Serves: 8 adults Preparation time: 15 mins Cooking time: 30 mins

Probably the most popular dish in the western region of Africa, Jollof rice is a one-pot dish to relish. Its origins are unclear, but it gets its name from the Wolof language where it is known as Benachin meaning ‘one pot’. Each region has its variation on this dish, but the results are always the same - tasty!

What to do:

1. Liquidise the tomatoes, onion and pepper in a blender or food processor. Tip into a large saucepan, then cover and cook over a medium-high heat for 6-8 minutes. Add the tomato puree, bay leaf, garlic, curry powder and thyme. Simmer for a further 2 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Ingredients:

2. Add the stock or water and bring to boil.

400g plum tomatoes 1 medium onion roughly chopped 1 red pepper deseeded and chopped 100g tomato puree 1 bay leaf 1 garlic clove crushed ¼ tsp curry powder ¼ tsp dried thyme 700ml vegetable or chicken stock 500g easy cook long grain white rice 1 pinch ground black pepper

3. Add the rice, stir, then cover and turn down the heat. Allow to simmer over a low heat for about 15-20 minutes, or until the rice is tender. During cooking, check and stir occasionally to make sure there is enough liquid to cook the rice. This is to ensure that the rice does not burn. If there is not enough, add a little extra water. Tip 1: You could use easy cook brown rice in this recipe, though it will take about an extra 10-15 minutes to cook, so keep an eye on the liquid and top up if necessary. Tip 2: Serve with grilled chicken, fish or meat and some brightly coloured steamed vegetables or a side salad. To save on time, fresh or frozen vegetables can be added to the pan towards the end of cooking and allowed to steam. This recipe has been taken from the Change4Life website

SPOTLIGHT ON RIDING FOR THE DISABLED Riding for the Disabled (RDA) is a respected national organisation with the active patronage of HRH Princess Anne. But it also has strong links to East Grinstead as the South East region has been sponsored for the last 8 years by local company, Cowan Architects (see page 41 for their advert). Budding riders from East Grinstead, both young and old, can chose from a number of vibrant and active groups locally which cater for a wide variety of disabilities. There’s also Carriage Driving available at groups near Uckfield, Horsham and Guildford. Each RDA group is a separate charity with its own individual character and here’s a spotlight on those riding groups nearest to us.

ASHDOWN FOREST, Chelwood Gate By Mary Bell, marycbell@yahoo.co.uk The Ashdown Forest Group, based at Chelwood Equestrian Centre, Chelwood Gate, aims to give a positive equine experience to children through riding, long-reining, stable-management or maybe just stroking a pony. It’s well known that ponies have a very positive effect on our children and we aim to provide that in as varied and fun-filled way as possible. I am not a horsey person but about 15 years ago I was introduced to Ali Remmen who is! I was told she had a “knack” with children but I was totally unprepared for the phenomenon that she is - an

absolute whirlwind gathering people like me up in her wake. She works tirelessly and passionately with children and horses and she asked if I could set up a new group. I expected an involvement of about 2 - 3months max but I’m still here 4 years later with a fabulous and well-established group. Our children are all local, as are our volunteers, fundraising opportunities and donations. We are currently keen to find loan homes for our ponies from where they could be transported to our sessions. But our dream would be to have a purpose-built, dedicated centre where we could provide daily sessions for more disabled children. It is unbelievably rewarding to see the positive effects of these children just being around a pony which can be anything from improved mobility, increased speech and language to just a smile. So if anyone out there has an old barn or farm building on a couple of acres......?

ERIDGE, Chuck Hatch By Jane Lom, www.eridgerda.org.uk Eridge RDA is run at Faircote Stud near Hartfield. We provide riding for 25 children and young people aged from 2 to 27 from East Sussex and Kent. The group was founded 45 years ago and we meet on Monday afternoons during term time, working with two local special schools as well as a group of parents who bring their children. The Group usually owns 1 or 2 ponies, living out with families for the rest of the week, and the rest are lent to us. We try to have 5 - 6 ponies/horses for each ride which have been carefully selected and suited 34 | October 2013 • Please mention East Grinstead Living when responding to adverts

to the rider’s needs. The lesson is led by a specially qualified instructor and each pony is joined by 3 helpers; one leading and two as side walkers. Our lessons always start with exercises designed by an occupational therapist followed by the option of a lesson in the school, a hack or some mounted games. Our riders can also take internal and external proficiency tests. We have to fundraise the £5000 that the Group needs to cover rent, shoeing costs, insurance and updating equipment. We work closely with other local equestrian groups and most recently collected £700 at Eridge Horse Trials. We have between 20 and 30 volunteers most weeks of all ages and walks of life. They receive training but some already have experience with working with these children or their professionals (therapists and psychologists). We also have students who join us just for a few weeks in the summer or during their GAP year.

COURT MEADOW, Ditchling Common By Anna Kerr, www.courtmeadow-rda.org.uk The Court Meadow Group was started in 1977 in Balcombe as therapy for some 20 children of Court Meadow School who had severe learning difficulties. A group of local mothers, whose children loved riding, wished to share this joy with others less able. In 1986 we moved to Ditchling Common Stud where the riding’s indoors and the children are encouraged to participate in as many activities as possible such as the Regional Fun Days where riders could qualify for the National Championships. We want to encourage each rider to learn to the best of their abilities, enjoy general riding and have fun loving the ponies. We now have 60 riders regularly. We also offer an Annual Camp Week at the Stud where the children come to learn how to groom, tack up, bath and feed the ponies. We have the use of 5 of our own ponies at present, owned by RDA friends but on long loan. The success has been seen in medals and smiles with the children proving their own capabilities at a high level of competition and socially as well. We also entered the Special Olympics UK with children winning bronze, silver and gold medals and once we’ve had a pupil included in the GB team competing in Ireland at the World Games. Last year Court Meadow amalgamated with Newick House in a new school called Woodlands Meed and riders with severe and medium learning difficulties are being taught together which has sometimes been challenging. But the goals remain the same and the rewards are in their happy faces. Ditchling Common Stud has recently been sold for development so we will have to move elsewhere before long which is a new challenge.

Samhain

OLDE HALLOWEEN PARTY GAMES

An Old Celtic Holiday

Samhain is a Gaelic Festival which symbolises the end of harvest time and the beginning of winter - the darker half of the year. It also marks the Feast of the Dead. Some view that this pagan festival, which falls on 31st Oct to the 1st of November, was later adopted by Christians and celebrated as All Hallow’s Eve - which later became Halloween. Whatever the case it is certainly celebrated at the same time of year. Many Pagans have and do consider it the Celtic New Year. Samhain has been celebrated in Britain for centuries in various guises. It is thought to be the time of year when the veils between this world and the otherworld were at their thinnest; when the spirits of the dead could most easily mingle with the living. ‘The Feast of the Dead’ aspect is not considered a morbid event as old age for its wisdom is valued and dying is accepted as a part of life as necessary and welcome as birth. Some consider this action of ‘remembering & honouring of the dead’ as being echoed by the Christian festival of Hallowmas: All Hallows’ Eve (Halloween) 31st October; All Saints Day 1st November, in honour of the Saints and All Souls Day 2nd November, in honour of the faithful departed. Reportedly to celebrate Samhain the Druids built huge sacred bonfires. Harvest food and animals were brought to share a communal dinner in celebration of the festival, during which time costumes were worn - usually animal heads and skins. Participants would also try and tell each other’s fortunes. And those born during the past year were formally welcomed into the community. After the festival, fires in homes were re-lit from the sacred bonfire, to help protect the family, as well as keep them warm during the winter months. And as autumn weather gets underway, a good hot bonfire seems like the perfect idea.

Some Scottish games traditionally played at Halloween were forms of divination to discover one’s future spouse. One such way was to peel an apple in one long strip, toss it over one’s shoulder; the shape in which it landed was believed to be the first letter of your future spouse’s name. Another game: unmarried women were told that if they sat in a darkened room and gazed into a mirror on Halloween night, the face of their future husband would appear in the mirror, gruesomely however they were told if a skull were to appear in the mirror, they were destined to die before marriage. The custom was widespread enough to be commemorated on greeting cards from the late 19th century and early 20th century. Other methods: it was thought that a future spouse may also appear by slicing an apple in half and eating it in front of a mirror by candlelight. And finally, a marriage partner’s shape could be guessed at by going into a field of kale and pulling up a stalk. It was thought that the shape of the kale would match the shape of a future spouse... With so many methods of finding one’s future spouse, there couldn’t have been room for error! A
