Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

Dear Residents,
Whats inside this month
Welcome the October issue. We hope you’ve had a good start to autumn. This month we have a fabulous fashion article brought to you by Tessa Sturdy of Second Glance, to help you along with your fashion decisions this autumn! With Halloween not far away we take a look at a little history and trivia, see pages 22 & 28. We live on the doorstep of Pooh Country (the Ashdown Forest) and we’re able to bring you a little Q&A with the author of the new book ‘Poohsticks Handbook’ about the sport invented on the famous pooh bridge in Hartfield.

With Love, from Forest Row
WELLS Local History Notes
by Dorothy Hatswell of the East Grinstead Museum Most settlements from prehistoric times onwards have grown up by rivers or lakes, as water is essential for life. If the water supply is insufficient for the population, it can lead to disease, dehydration and eventually death. It has always puzzled me that East Grinstead, which was built as a new town in the early C12th, had no river near it. The River Medway rises from a spring in Turners Hill, in an area which is a watershed. The River Mole arises near the Midway but flows north through Surrey to flow into the Thames. The river Eden also arises near to the sources of both these rivers and eventually flows north. The town is over a mile away from the point where the Medway runs near to East Grinstead before it flows to Forest Row and Groombridge and turning north where it crosses the county boundary and enters Kent. Here it encompasses the second largest water catchment area in the south of England, surpassed only by the Thames. The reasons usually put forward for the siting of East Grinstead on the top of a ridge running east/west across the Weald is that it was already the centre for the manors and farms in the surrounding countryside and the church, originally St Edmunds, (but from the mid to late C9th was renamed St Swithuns), was there. All of this is fine but does not get over the problem of a good water source. The only explanation seems to be that they were aware that the water table was comparatively near
Well in quadrangle of Sackville College the surface and it was therefore practicable to dig wells and the disadvantages of doing so outweighed the desirability of building it on a site which could not flood and was also an established centre for the surrounding community. Geologically, East Grinstead lies on a broad dome or anticline which runs across the Weald. The highest point of this dome is in the Ashdown Forest area nearest to East Grinstead. This means that wells would only need to go down about 200 feet, which was fairly common at this period. A deep well such as these would be dug with a large diameter. This allowed several men to dig at the same time, all done with picks and shovels. The main town well would probably be lined with stone. The lining and the continuation of the stonework above ground level helped reduce contamination and the top wall also prevented people

or animals accidentally falling in. In East Grinstead the wells which have been investigated seem never to have exceeded 100 feet in depth. The water was winched up in a bucket by hand. Sometimes donkeys or horses would be pressed into supplying the power to raise the water. There is no evidence that this happened here but as these beasts of burden were used for most tasks that required pulling power, it is reasonable to posit the fact that they might have been used for this as well. No pun intended! In addition to the main town well which was probably situated somewhere near the end of what would become Middle Row, some of the burghers in the new houses on the High Street would have their own. Both Sackville House and Sackville College have wells, presumably contemporary with the buildings. These are only

about 80 feet deep, confirming that the water table then was comparatively near the surface. Although many of the burghers would have relied on the public well, eventually several wells were dug behind their houses. Often these would be shared with neighbours. The inhabitants of numbers 1- 11 and 2-4, High Street together with 1-3 London Road have the right to draw water from the well behind numbers 7-9, High Street, accessed by a twitten between numbers 3 - 5. Disused wells have frequently been discovered during building work. One was found behind Amherst House, and others at Judges Terrace and Wilmington House. Wells were marked on OS maps after 1873 but it seems to have been very random. Some lesser ones are marked but important ones such as the Town Well and the one at Sackville College are not. The 1866 Sanitary Act required local authorities to undertake a comprehensive sewerage and water connection to all dwellings. In East Grinstead, the Water Works were opened on December 21st 1880 through the good offices of the newly formed East Grinstead Gas and Water Company, under the Chairmanship of W.V.K. Stenning. Over time, since the town had a piped water supply, the wells lost their importance and became merely historical curiosities.

Scuppers to Skipper: A personal account of life in the Royal Navy 1934-1958 East Grinstead resident Christine Edney, has highlighted a book compiled by her brother about the extraordinary journey of their father Walter Edney from the ‘dregs’ of the Navy to being a fully commissioned officer in a time when social mobility of this type just didn’t exist. This book provides both a personal story and a deep insight into life in the Royal Navy during the mid 20th Century as well as exciting accounts of wartime action in North Atlantic convoy duty - including the infamous sinking of two U-boat aces “Otto Kretschmer in U-99” and “Joachim Schepke in U-100” in a single night. Here is a ‘Q&A’ with Christine’s brother, Jonathan Edney, who published the book earlier this year: What inspired you to write this book? My father was an extraordinary man. He started from the most humble background and had no advantages in life beyond his own determination and ability. He rose in the Navy from a boy seaman (the lowest possible rank) to a commissioned officer. In those days of class separation, it was almost unheard of for men to cross the line from lower ranks to officer
10
What response has the book so far? The main reason for publishing was to enable friends and family to obtain copies as we had often been asked for copies over the years. However, the book has attracted much more interest than we expected selling more than 500 copies so far. What legacy do you feel your father has left for future generations?
and his experiences along the journey provide both a fascinating view of life in the Royal Navy and an encouraging story of a humble but capable man making his way. I felt the story needed to be told. Please give us a synopsis of the process by which this book came about? My father wrote his memoirs around 1990 and gave me a large pile of handwritten lined paper. I knew this would be an interesting story and it was important to preserve it. Therefore I set about typing it into my rudimentary computer and arranging for it to be printed in hardbound book form. Just enough copies were printed for the children and grandchildren. The book covered his whole life until 1990 but was in two parts – life in the Navy and his subsequent successful civilian life. Over the years we have seen an increasing interest in first account stories from the period between and after the world wars and I became aware of the technology to self-publish books of good quality. Therefore I decided to publish the first part of his book covering his early and naval life.

My father was a superb leader and was known by all those he led to be “hard but very fair”. Despite his abilities, he was a humble man who never boasted about his achievements or put himself before others. More than anything else he had absolute integrity so that people who served with and under him trusted him completely. He legacy is the old fashion notion that honesty, hard work and intelligence will pay off if you have patience. This autumn at Standen As we head into autumn, there are many sights for visitors to enjoy at Standen House and Garden, the Arts and Crafts home of James and Margaret Beale, plus their seven children. Inside the house, the Westbourne Room, which has been displayed as a bedroom since 2011, has now been recreated as the studio of the Beales’ second eldest daughter, Maggie. It wasn’t the original space Mrs Beale designated as a studio, but Maggie preferred it as its windows overlooked the entrance courtyard, with the steady north light providing ideal working conditions. When recreating the room, there were no contemporary images of the studio to follow, but Mr and Mrs Beale’s grandchildren provided their own recollections which have helped us piece together how the room would have looked. They recalled a
large table in the middle where they would sit and draw on wet days. Maggie would tell them what to draw and make suggestions, whilst at other times she gave drawing lessons sitting in her big roomy armchair. She would also tell the children stories about her experiences at the Slade School of Art, where she studied from 1896 to 1900. Thanks to the family donating some of Maggie’s own sketchbooks, visitors can also see reproductions of her work around the room. Modern day creative visitors are invited to make use of the art materials in this room too, so if you would like to take inspiration from Maggie’s paintings and sketches and have a go yourself, do visit us soon.

Outside in the garden, autumn colours are gradually replacing the vibrant annuals and tender perennials that have given a wide range of shapes, textures and colours in the courtyard, house terrace and wider garden this summer. Our rare acers, bought by Mrs Beale from her world tour to Japan in 1906-07, are beginning to turn vibrant shades of red and orange, whilst the kitchen garden is bursting with apples,

Our Garden Revival Project, to reinstate the splendour of the original Arts and Crafts-inspired garden created by Margaret Beale at the end of the 19th century and early 20th century, was fortunate to be featured on BBC1’s Countryfile earlier this month. Our project is now just seventeen months off completion, with work currently taking place
to reinstate the Rosery and the Swimming Pond next to the Croquet Lawn, as well as repair work to the House Terrace wall and trellis. We also have the Rock Top Walk area opening this autumn, offering fantastic views across to St Swithin’s in Maggie Beale as a girl East Grinstead and across The High Weald. This is an area of the garden that was previously closed to visitors so it is worth exploring to view the Standen estate from a different perspective. We may not be Spring chickens, but we can still be Autumn chic! Is this the time of year when you look longingly at the season’s styles and cry, ‘Ooh I’d love to wear that but I’m too old?’ Well, don’t despair! It is always possible to interpret ‘the look’ in a more mature way, with the help of a few ‘anti-mutton’ rules:
1.
2. 3.
4.
5.
16
Worries about showing your shape? Forget them. This season, the batwing sleeve is alive and well along with other loose fit jumpers and tops, many of which are long line. If you want a fitted style, wear the right size, rather than the one that’s a bit of a squeeze – much more flattering. You can always cut the label out! Wear these with a straight leg style trouser or jean – there are plenty out there with a high rise, which will help tuck your tummy in. And if you want to be totally on trend – drag out the flares! 70’s boho rules OK?! Take advantage of the longer line cardigans and duster coats this season– they have the effect of lengthening and hiding some of those bits you’re not so proud of!
6.
7.
Less is more. Animal prints are ever popular during the winter months. Use them more subtly as a trim, lining or accessory – an ocelot print scarf, pair of pumps or handbag with a plain dress will work well. Leave the leopard skin leggings to Rod Stewart and his daughters!
8.
Invest in good underwear. Lose inches where it counts and streamline your body shape by ridding yourself of unsightly bulges from bad fitting bras and don’t be proud - buy some control pants. All the celebrities have them!
9.
Show those legs! In the winter months, you really can wear slightly shorter than knee length if you wear opaque tights. Change your look with your footwear: long and ankle boots, high and low heels, court shoes and pumps.
If you feel safe in black then wear it! But add a softer colour near your face which is kinder to mature skin, or accessorise with statement jewellery. But this season, why not try navy as a base colour? Plenty of it about and wonderful with pinks, pale blues and greys. Embrace faux fur – a wonderfully feminine look, whatever your age. This season, look out for pastel colours and grey based animal prints in gilets, jackets and coats. Don’t fancy the teddy bear look? Then buy a fur headband or hat – or a fur collar for last year’s coat! Ponchos make a welcome return – perfect for any age! Choose your fabric from cashmere, tweed, jersey mixes, faux fur to mention but a few. Always a welcome extra layer in our uncertain weather conditions. Add a bit of bling if you like it. Look out for metallic boots, shoes, handbags and sparkly bits on jumpers and tops – no upper age limit!
10. Finally, be brave – we are real women after all. Let’s be proud of it!

Pooh and his Pastimes Poohsticks is of course a national pastime fully realised on a small bridge in the Ashdown Forest in what is now known as Pooh country. It is one of the National Trust’s’ 50 Things To Do Before You Are 11 and ¾’ and is a game loved by adults and children alike. The Poohsticks Handbook written by Mark Evans, comedy writer for the BBC, is a charming and funny text which guides the reader through the intricacies of Pooh Sticks – from a brief history of the game (invented, of course, by Pooh Bear himself in ‘The House at Pooh Corner’) to strategies that can help avoid a soaking. We find out what the perfect Pooh stick looks like, what the optimum location is and about notable games of Poohsticks throughout history. The book ends with FAQ About Poohsticks, which Winnie-the-Pooh thinks stands for ‘Food Always Quitenice’. Here we a ‘Q&A’ with author, Mark Evans: What inspired you to pursue the pastime of Poohsticks? Doesn’t everyone play Poohsticks? As far back as I can remember, whenever I’ve found myself with other people on a bridge in a wood, there’s been an unspoken assumption that Poohsticks will be played. Poohsticks is part of the British syntax, along with tea, cricket and secretly liking rain.
used word in describing it. And I’ll take ‘sweet’ any day of the week over words such as ‘rubbish’, ‘boo’, ‘hiss’ and ‘only good for kindling’ - by which I mean lighting a fire and not putting on an e-reader. (I’m trying to get the OED to add this definition of ‘kindling’ to their next edition…) What legacy do you feel Winniethe-Pooh has given to the common consciousness? I think whenever people hear the words ‘Winnie-the-Pooh’ they’re instantly catapulted into a state of warm, gooey childhood nostalgia - he’s that much a part of people’s lives. Plus, thanks to Pooh, most people today know that bears really, really like honey. Sorry, that should read ‘hunny’. How do you hope to influence the sport of Poohsticks? If there’s one thing I could do to influence the game, it would be to try and get it accepted as an Olympic sport. If they’re having golf in Rio next year, then I think we should push for Poohsticks in Tokyo 2020. Come on, the IOC, you know you want to! The Poohsticks Handbook is available now on Amazon, other book-selling sites and in Bookshops, published by Egmont.
How did come to decide to write a book about the subject?
Sudoku
Actually, I was approached to write the book. And I immediately thought ‘what a great idea! that sounds like fun! Yes please!’ . Then I re-read my A. A. Milne, remembered and re-realised what a fantastically clever and witty writer he was and panicked mildly following in his footsteps even for a short book was quite intimidating, but also challengingly fun. And I only hope The Poohsticks Handbook has captured at least some of his spirit and style… What response have you had to the book since its release? It seems to have proved rather popular with people I know who have read it. ‘Sweet’ has been an often 18

The Welsh Halloween we now all know as Halloween, was referred to as Nos Galan Gaeaf or, occasionally ‘Spirit Night’. Many traditions gradually grew up around the festival which slowly morphed (via the USA of course) into the Halloween that we know today. Human nature being what it is, inevitably, this ‘spirit night’ became connected with all things frightening and ominous...
The White Lady at Porth Padrig. This quartzite sea stack is situated on Llanbadrig beach at Porth Padrig. Its white hue has given rise to its mythological naming after Ladi Wen, the White Lady, a ghostly apparition. © Copyright Bob Jones
Long ago, before the industrialisation of Britain destroyed many of the old traditions in rural communities, the end of autumn and the first day of winter was the 1st November and it was a cause for celebration, why celebrate the coming of winter? it’s hard to tell, but the people probably needed some good memories to see them through this harsh time of year! November 1st as being the first day of winter seems like a pretty accurate assessment of the seasons, 21st December always feels too late a declaration as the official start of winter in this Northern Hemisphere country of ours. By the end of October the harvest had been gathered in, excess livestock had been culled or killed off and put into storage to see people through the colder days. There was a communal, festivity feel, with everyone who had participated in the growing of crops and the keeping of animals, coming together to celebrate.
For instance, another welsh tradition call ‘Coelcerth’ was initiated wherein a fire was built, everyone placing stones with their names on in and around the fire. If any stone and name were missing the following morning, that person would die during the coming year! It is easy to imagine the apprehension and sheer horror as people looked for their stones the next morning - the pressures of modern day seem pale by comparison! Another Welsh tradition was making masks in the hope of scaring evil spirits away - in modern day, of course, the Halloween masks of witches, ghouls, etc. are actually in the guise of ‘evil spirits’... But that was the heart of the art of carving faces on turnips and displaying them in windows: they weren’t there as an invitation for the ‘evil spirits’, as they are probably viewed today but quite the opposite. Turnip carving later made way for pumpkin carving which is now practised in copious amounts towards the end of October. Naturally ‘being frightened’ soon became an essential part of Nos Galan Gaeaf Halloween. The image of ‘Y Hwch Ddu Gwta’, a black sow without a tail, accompanied by a headless woman, roaming the countryside together on Nos Galan Gaeaf, terrified everyone when the best place to be was inside your house in front of a roaring fire! And who can blame them.
One tradition that grew up around this jovial time was the harvest mare: corn would be fashioned into the shape of a horse and placed above the hearth. Getting the mare into the house became a game and the cause of much ‘horseplay’ (the origin of the term). Women tried to prevent it coming inside, trying to soak it with water, while the men attempted to keep it dry. In Wales, the 1st of November was called Galan Gaeaf. The night before, the 31st October, which 22

There were further superstitions like touching or smelling ground ivy, which was thought to make you see hags or witches while you sleep. Boys were told to cut 10 leaves of ivy, throw one away and put the rest under their pillows in order to see who their future bride would be. Surprise, surprise that for girls who wanted to see who their future husband would be it was a much more arduous process. They had to grow a rose, train it around a large hoop, then slip through the hoop three times before cutting the rose and placing it under their pillow when they went to bed that night. Let us hope they got the answers they were looking for! Like many Celtic festivals this particular festival was adopted by the Church with the advent of Christianity and it became the festival of All Saints on November 1st and All Souls Festival on November 2nd, continuing the tradition of remembering the souls that had passed on. However Halloween has completely eclipsed these festivals in modern day. Traditions on the 31st October varied, of course, between regions of the country. The American custom of trick or treating is presumed to have a Scottish origin, guising as it was known, while modern customs such as bonfires on Halloween night go back many years. Another custom was that if a woman wanted to see
24
the face of the man she would marry, on Halloween night she would darken her room and look into the mirror. The face of her future bridegroom was supposed to materialise behind her. If, however, a skull was to appear, it meant that she would die before the year was out. In Pembrokeshire in the 1950s this tradition had changed to the more simple one of never looking into a mirror on Halloween or else you would see witches and demons in your sleep. In various modern day literary forms mirrors are still often symbolised as being a connection to the spirit world. In the 18th century, as Britain changed from a rural to an urban, industrialised country, many (but not all) of the Halloween or Galan Gaeaf customs died out. The ‘spirit night’ on the 31st October is one celebration that has remained and the customs, which largely evolved in the USA , have been reabsorbed into our yearly calendar as a time to bring out the ghost tales and terrify you with visions of all sorts of ghoulish creatures.

Cats au Noir the witch and black cat partnership. Thus, an animal once looked on with respect became a symbol of evil omens in certain time periods. Luckily, in some parts of the world, it’s quite the opposite! The black cat is revered is a symbol of good luck even. The Scottish believe that a strange black cat’s arrival to the home signifies prosperity. In the Midlands, a black cat as a wedding present is thought to bring good luck to the bride!
In early Egyptian times, dating back as far as 3000 BC, cats (including black ones) were almost revered as gods. They were the height of the animal world hierarchy: held in such high esteem that to kill one was considered a capital crime. It wasn’t until the middle-ages that the black cat’s reputation was on the wane and they started to be associated with socalled witches. As the hysteria surrounding witches grew, so did prejudice and fear rise. It is likely this initially arose from the alley cats, often cared for and fed by the poor lonely old ladies which could later be accused of witchery... black was the colour that literally represented ‘the dark side’ so it was happened that these poor cats got more stick than their coloured counter-parts. These poor women’s cat companions were deemed guilty of witchery by association. A folklore involving a father and son sprung up in Lincolnshire in the 1560’s which tarnished the black cat’s reputation further when it was the butt of a whispering campaign. Allegedly the pair were said to have been travelling one moonless night when a black cat crossed their path. They did what mindless people might do and threw rocks at the poor thing until the helpless injured creature skulked to an old woman’s house, who at the time was suspected of being a witch. The next day, the father and son came across the same woman and noticed she was limping and bruised: she must surely therefore have been the cat, it could not have been a coincidence! Apparently from that day on in Lincolnshire, it was thought that witches could turn into black cats at night - but we’d quietly like to think that not every Lincolnshirite fell for that story. The belief of witches transforming themselves into black cats in order to prowl streets unobserved became a central belief in America during the Salem witch hunts. Halloween celebrations have cemented 28
In Germany, some believed that black cats crossing a person’s path from right to left was a bad omen. But from left to right was a good omen. Black cats are also considered good luck in Japan. And furthermore, it is believed that a lady who owns a black cat will have many suitors. Black cats seem to have represented two extremes of the spectrum. We can only wonder what the poor cats thought about all this unwarranted attention. I’m sure they just wanted a quiet life with a little food and somewhere warm to sleep.

Meat-free cottage pie It’s easy to make this delicious cottage pie with vegetarian mince instead of beef. The curry powder spices up the flavour, yet isn’t too strong. Serves: 4 adults Preparation time: 20 mins Cooking time: 35 mins
What to do: 1. Cook the potatoes and butternut squash in a large saucepan of boiling water until tender, about 20 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, heat the vegetable oil in a large saucepan and gently fry the onion, garlic and carrots for 2-3 minutes, until softened. Add the vegetarian mince, tomatoes and reduced salt stock. Stir in the curry powder, then add the mushrooms and courgette. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and cook, stirring occasionally, for 15-20 minutes. Season with black pepper. 3. Preheat the grill, warming a large baking dish underneath for a few moments. Meanwhile, drain and mash the potatoes and butternut squash, seasoning with black pepper.
Ingredients: 600g potatoes cut into chunks 500g butternut squash peeled and cut into chunks 1 tsp vegetable oil 1 medium onion chopped 2 garlic cloves crushed 2 carrots chopped 300g vegetarian mince 400g chopped tomatoes 150ml vegetable or chicken stock 2 tsp curry powder 100g closed cup mushrooms sliced 1 courgette grated 1 pinch ground black pepper 2 tsp cornflour

4. Blend the cornflour with 1 tbsp cold water and add it to the mince mixture, stirring until thickened. Transfer it to the warm baking dish and spoon the vegetable mash on top. Grill for about 8-10 minutes, until browned. Serve. Tip 1: You could make the mash with a combination of swede, carrots and potato. Tip 2: For a vegetarian alternative, if you’re not keen on meat substitutes, use a 410g can green lentils in water, drained Tip 3: Serve with lightly cooked broccoli or cabbage if you like, or frozen beans, peas or mixed vegetables.

With Love, from Forest Row Three local women from Forest Row: Clare Parker, Anna Kilpatrick and Rosa Martin decided to set up ‘Forest Row to the Jungle’ when, this summer, they took a van loaded with donations collected from the local community (tents, food pallets, warm clothes) to the Calais ‘Jungle’, a pop up ‘village’ where refugees are living in the hope of coming to Britain. They are preparing for their second visit within the next couple of days with another overwhelming response of giving from the local community. Here is some fascinating feedback about what they experienced so far: We’re a non-political group of women who live close to the South coast and seeing people in need so near to us, we are extending the help we can give. We don’t ourselves profess to have any solutions or to know what the right answers are to this situation, but we certainly see that they are people in need and that most of them want to return to their countries when the conflicts are finally over. It was a good feeling that there that we were, 3 women by ourselves heading into the ‘Jungle’. We drove right into the camp, it looked like a rural part of Africa, we had to wait 45 mins for our first contact to meet us. The population is all almost entirely male, if you drove into a British camp full of only males in difficult circumstances, you might feel threatened. However, we were made to feel very welcome and people began to wave, smile and greet us with kindness. We were absolutely welcomed, people were respectful and appreciative of the help. There 32
his town ISIS had control and if you voiced any disagreements you ran the real risk of being either thrown from a tower or beheaded. Another person from Pakistan who had lost all his family had been granted asylum in France and now comes back to the Jungle to help other people to get on their way. was no ‘grabbing’ or any angry sense of entitlement despite the desperation of their situation. We were able to walk around and leave our van without worry that things would be taken away. People were genuinely interested in us, asking where we were from, etc. When we carried out our organised distribution, lines were formed, women were particularly respected and those waiting were patient and for the most part relaxed. There were some quite harrowing realities of jungle life, for instance, there was a 12 year old who had escaped his country and he was on his own without any family around him. We saw an 18 year old man who just arrived lying on the floor, exhausted and confused. One of his few possessions was a mobile so he could call his brother who was able translate via another ‘jungle resident’ and let them know his situation and that he needed assistance to understand the systems for getting help in the camp. Naturally residents of the jungle have divided themselves into nationality groups; we noticed the Syrian group were the most ‘broken’ out of all the groups, conspicuous by their distance and absence in the queues which would form at distribution times. We met one Syrian guy who said that in
living Visit: w w w.egliving.co.uk
A group of 11 Sudanese young men, invited us into their tent to give us some of their precious clove tea after the distribution. We learned that they often wanted to come to England because they had learned English in schools and so it was where they felt they could build a new life, where they had some sense of understanding and connection. Most of the reasons people had fled their countries were due to conflicts that threatened their existence. Another reason people wanted to come to Britain in particular was that perhaps the ‘one living relative’ they had in a safe country happened to be in Britain. Some of them had just given up though, maybe having tried to jump on a Euro Tunnel train, they had then broken a limb, or they had finally decided to stay in France as it was too hard to try getting into England. To support the ‘Forest Row to The Jungle’ community group find them on Facebook for updates and donation points.

It is now an international celebration of drawing which has grown from one day in October 2000 in the UK to an annual month-long festival of drawing across the world! The first Big Draw in 2000 attracted 180 partner organisations. By October 2011, the number had risen to 1,300, with over 260,000 people participating. Locally there are two events of the Big Draw that you can participate in: Sunday, 18th October
is the world’s biggest drawing festival with thousands of enjoyable, and mainly free, drawing activities which connect people of all ages with museums, outdoor spaces, artists, designers, illustrators - and each other.
Be creative at The Creative Hub during this years Big Draw. In keeping with the theme ‘Every Drawing Tells A Story’ we aim to fill the room with art which creates a walk in story! Open for
all ages. Plus, come and see the Creative Hub’s young art students exhibition at the same time. Big Draw £1 per person (contribution towards materials). Free Parking. 11am until 4pm. Suitable for all ages. The Creative Hub, Wealden House, Lewes Road, East Grinstead, RH19 3TB. Call: 07595360300. Saturday 3rd October Free and open to all, have a go at: drawing with light, mark making in clay, making flip books, taking part in a huge communal drawing to music. The aim is to have a go rather than creating masterpieces! 10 am - 4pm, organised by the Hartfield Arts and Theatre. St Mary the Virgin, Church Street, Hartfield, TN7 4AG. Call: 01892 770436.
The Big Draw is for anyone who loves to draw, as well as those who think they can’t!

The Award Winning, Sussex Healthcare Group are excited to announce the opening of brand new purpose built care facilities in Broadbridge Heath, near Horsham. “One adult in particular surprised us all. We had no idea how cognitively able he was, it is hard to get much response from him, but when we introduced him to the eye gaze straight away he realized he was controlling it by himself. He got through a lot of the games quickly! He was deliberately closing his eyes to stop the game and starting again, teasing us! It was a very emotional day for us.” Registered Manager
Bringing an exciting new service to potential service users, these facilities are comprised of two buildings, each purpose-built, consisting of four 10 bedded units. The Granary unit provides nursing support to younger people with acquired brain injury and neurological conditions. This specialist care service, with nursing and physiotherapy input has been equipped with all the latest technological aids, including a hydrotherapy pool and a salt cave. The Laurels unit supports people with autism or young people leaving school or college with profound learning and physical disabilities.
