SUmmER ENDING
Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

Local History Notes
RICHARD FORD by Dorothy Hatswell
One of the stewards at the museum, Olive Coombe, drew my attention to the fact that, hitherto unknown to me, there was a connection between Mrs. Jordan the long time mistress of the Duke of Clarence (later William IV) and East Grinstead: In 1789, Richard Ford became MP for East Grinstead. At the time the town was a “rotten” or “pocket” borough – in essence tiny. A borough was a town that had a Royal Charter to elect two members of Parliament. There was no secret ballot at that time and the power to either bribe or threaten the small electorate of a rotten borough was in the hands of the landowners. They could put whosoever they wanted into the House of Commons! Thus it was not too difficult to become the MP for such a borough given the right connections… - inevitably East Grinstead therefore became one of the fifty seven boroughs abolished in the Reform Act of 1832. Richard had, at that time, a long term mistress, Dora Bland. She was an Irish-born actress who’d had a short relationship with her producer and borne him two children. When they’d fallen out she’d come to England and took the surname “Jordan” as she’d now “crossed the water”. The “Mrs”, was simply a courtesy title as she never married. In 1785 she was offered a place at Drury Lane Theatre, then owned jointly by Richard Brinsley Sheridan and Dr. James Ford. It was at the theatre Dora met Richard Ford, Dr. Ford’s son, who was a lawyer with aspirations to becoming an MP. While still continuing to grace the stage she moved in with Richard and had a further three children during which time he became the MP for East Grinstead. Although she was promised marriage he procrastinated, probably because he was a member of a wealthy Sussex family. Eventually she realised that the wedding was not going to become a reality, and left him in 1791. The circles she had moved in with Ford at Drury Lane included several members of the royal family. William, Duke of Clarence, later William IV, was attracted to her and soon took her into his household. They settled down to a domestic life and she gave birth to a further ten children! This harmony was only broken twenty years later, by the efforts of the royal family to obtain a successor to the throne of England. George IV’s only child, Charlotte, had died in child birth, as had her child. None of the other royal dukes had produced any legitimate heirs, so the pressure was put on William, as heir to his brother George IV, to marry and produce an heir himself. Reluctantly,
Dorothea Jordan he parted with Mrs Jordan, though his chidren were all recognised and supported by him and given the surname, Fitzwilliam. She lost most of her money helping various relatives and had to flee to France to escape the Debtors’ Prison. Sadly, she died three years later a pauper. The Duke of Clarence married Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen in 1792, but their union did not produce the required heir and so, on William’s death in 1837 Victoria, the daughter of his late brother Edward, became Queen of England. Richard Ford had realised his dream of being an MP, however he was only East Grinstead’s MP for little over a year, spending a further year as MP for Appleby in Westmorland (now part of Cumbria), resigning for financial reasons. Richard continued his practice as a lawyer and was appointed Chief Police Magistrate. He did finally marry a Marianne Booth with whom he had three children. Incidentally, as a magistrate he was expected to carry out arrests. On one occasion he went to Hounslow Heath disguised as an old man, when attacked by footpads (robbers), his escort of Bow Street Runners emerged and arrested the miscreants. In 1805 he revived the Bow Street Horse Runners. These were a complementary force to the more familiar Bow Street Runners. Both groups had been founded by his friends, Henry Fielding, the novelist and his half-brother, John Fielding, the “Blind Beak”, in 1763. The Bow Street Runners were the fore-runners

of our present police force. The mounted section, which had been disbanded some years earlier, were often ex-cavalrymen. Armed with truncheons, sabres and pistols, they were a deterrent to many criminals. Dressed in blue greatcoats with scarlet waistcoats, hence their nickname, “Robin Redbreasts”, they were an imposing sight. Their main aim was to rid the main routes into the capital of highwaymen and in this they were very successful. They also provided Epsom Race Course with protection from pickpockets on race days.
William, Duke of Clarence, later William IV
Richard was knighted in 1801, for his services, which often included personal protection of the King. His son also Richard was admitted to the bar as well, but never practised. He wrote several books, the one on Spain was described as the earliest and best travellers guide to be published. He also had large and valuable collection of paintings. Richard Ford died on May 3rd 1806 of a fever at his home in Sloane Street. He was buried at St.Lukes, Chelsea, a week later. It is interesting to note that, through Mrs Jordan and William IV’s illegitimate children, our present Prime Minister, David Cameron, is distantly related to both them and our present Queen, Elizabeth II.
An introduction from Martin Brown the new Headteacher of Imberhorne School. I joined Imberhorne School as Deputy Headteacher in September 2008. Prior to this I taught at Hazelwick School in Crawley where I had a number of different roles including Head of Year, Head of Creative Arts and then Assistant Headteacher. My background in the Arts has made me really value personalisation in education. I think it is important that students discover a passion for learning and believe this comes from them taking ownership over what they do and how they do it, I think students work best when they have the freedom to make appropriate choices. Having worked in schools for over 20 years I am very well aware of what great skills and abilities young people have. Good teachers are continually looking for ways to tap into this potential and to effectively ‘unlock’ learning. In my relatively short time at Imberhorne I have come to recognise the many distinctive qualities at the school, most notably the wonderful sense of community that exists. Students have the opportunity to take part in a wide range of activities and events, something I feel is a necessary part of their broader development. This extends from the numerous trips we offer both within this country and abroad to team building events, many fabulous arts activities, participation in sports events and
sports teams and of course our well established Duke of Edinburgh scheme. What strikes me about the school is not just how many of these opportunities exist but how well supported they are by students, staff and parents. I have no doubt that such a rich and varied extra curricular life to the school vastly enriches students’ experiences and their learning. It fosters great enthusiasm and enjoyment. As we move into the future, the challenge for me and the other staff is to retain these undoubted qualities whilst aiming to build even greater success for the school. I am really proud of what Imberhorne School has achieved to date and excited about being able to lead the school into the next stage of its development.

Walk: Lodestones West Hoathly
In the mists of time, centuries before the Industrial Revolution, the Sussex Weald put a roar in the lion that would become England, the county’s smelt mills providing hot iron by the ton. Long before the industry gave rise to West Hoathly village, there was an extensive hill fort at nearby Philpots that guarded local mines. Coveted by the Romans, these and others in the Weald were the main source of metal for military and civilian use during the occupation. The industry flourished and, in 1283, the Sheriff of Sussex was ordered by royal decree to furnish the army with 30,000 horseshoes and 60,000 nails, the profitable industry making local ironmasters, such as the Infields of Gravetye, rich. Much of the fabric of modern West Hoathly is derived from the trade, many of its cottages and manor houses and its ancient church resounding to the ring of iron.
This fascinating walk, largely through woodlands awash with bluebells, cuckoo flowers and wild garlic during the spring season, follows the Iron Age compass all the way, visiting the 15th century, timber-framed Priest House, the long discarded iron founders’ pits and dams, and the 11th century church of St Margaret. The Priest House is in the ownership of Sussex Past and has been open as a museum since 1908. It displays a varied collection of 17th- and 18th century ironwork, furniture, textiles and domestic bygones. In the doorway is a rough iron slab from a local furnace. The slab is supposed to stop witches entering the house, which is open from March until early November (telephone: 01342 810479).
Description: A quiet country lanes and woodland tracks hike on part of the High Weald Landscape Trail, passing ancient sites associated with the iron industry. Distance: 5½ miles. Time: 3 hours. Gradient: 40% of the route, at points 2 to 8 and particularly at point 5. Underfoot: Some of the paths, particularly those near water in shaded woodland areas, can be muddy after heavy rain. Starting point: Park on North Lane opposite the church. GR 363326. How to get there: West Hoathly is around 4½ miles south-west of East Grinstead and around the same distance south-east from junction 10A of the M23 on a minor road east of the B2028 between Ardingly and Turners Hill. OS map: Explorer 135 Ashdown Forest. Refreshments: The Cat Inn opposite the church (not open on Mondays) serves highly recommended bar meals. Also see the notes about the hospitality offered by St Margaret’s church in point 8. 1.

Is St Margaret’s the only church in Christendom to offer strangers like me free refreshments? I’ve never encountered such hospitality before! There’s a sign on an old chest to the left of the porch that invites visitors to help themselves to tea and coffee. This wonderful church is full of reminders of the village’s iron industry, artefacts including the nails that pick out the date ‘March 31 1626’ on the front door, old iron clockworks which formerly hung in the tower and were probably gifted by the local wealthy ironmasters, and iron grave slabs which commemorate the Infields – ironmasters of Gravetye to the north of the village.

Celebrity chef launches
Forget-Me-Not Bake Off! Local chef, Ready, Steady, Cook! regular & Jigsaw (South East) Patron Tony Tobin launches a weeklong campaign (23-30 September) to get children baking in memory of loved ones. Jigsaw (South East) is based in East Grinstead and supports bereaved families or those facing the loss of a loved one through serious illness. The bake-off encourages young people and their families across the area to roll up their sleeves and bake their favourite recipes, in memory of loved ones while raising essential funds for Jigsaw. Recipes are often a closely guarded secret within a family, handed down through generations – be it Granny’s special fruitcake, Mum’s marvellous carrot cake or Dad’s healthy oatcakes. Now the charity is encouraging school children to re-create their family’s favourite healthy cake recipes, compete with their classmates and participate in fundraising. At the launch, Patron Tony Tobin said: “This is a fantastic campaign. I think kids should start cooking as soon as possible – the sooner the better. I personally started cooking when I was very young – aged eight – and eventually it led to a very rewarding career as a chef. Cooking can certainly be a very therapeutic and relaxing activity – you can really lose yourself while baking and end up with a delicious treat.” Nickey Price, Jigsaw’s Operations Manager added: “Jigsaw’s Grief Support Groups and work within schools indicates that baking and cooking can actually be a very beneficial and therapeutic activity for families, often provoking important, but difficult conversations surrounding the loss of a loved one. In fact some
agencies even incorporate a cooking activity in their support programmes as it has been shown to produce such positive outcomes.” Tony Tobin and the charity invites recipe submissions from children to go into a special Forget-Me-Not Bake Off recipe book. What if you could GET RID of
BACK PAIN, WHIPLASH, NECK PAIN, MIGRAINES, DIZZINESS, TMJ etc…?
AtlasPROfilax®
NEW REVOLUTIONARY TREATMENT
Did you know that the Atlas bone is misaligned in most humans? Do you suffer with recurring back pain, migraines and headaches, stiff neck, frozen shoulders, pain in the hips or knees, repetitive strain injury, trapped nerves, difference in legs length, sinuses problems, TMJ (misaligned jaw), dizziness, whiplash? A strategic and non-chiropractic massage is applied to the short musculature of the neck. In only one application, safely and permanently, the Atlas bone returns to its correct position. Old patterns clear and the entire system begins to function to its fullest potential.

Here’s a delicious version of bread and butter pudding, which is quick and easy to make. It’s an ideal way to use up slightly stale bread.
Ingredients: • • • • • • •
25g spread 6 slices sliced fruit bread 50g ready-to-eat apricots chopped 2 eggs 450ml milk 1 tsp vanilla extract (optional) 45g caster sugar
What to do: 1. Grease a 1 litre baking dish with ½ teaspoon of the low-fat spread. Spread the bread with the rest of the spread, then cut each slice into triangles. Arrange them in the dish with the chopped apricots. 2. Beat together the eggs, milk and vanilla extract. Stir in the sugar, allowing a few minutes for it to dissolve. Pour over the bread. Cover and leave to soak for at least 20 minutes. 3. Preheat the oven to 180°C, fan 160°C, gas mark 4. Uncover the pudding and bake for about 35-40 minutes, until set and golden brown. Tip 1: If you like, prepare the pudding in advance and keep in the fridge so that it can soak for several hours before baking. Tip 2: Use ordinary white bread instead of fruit bread and add a handful of sultanas and dried cherries or cranberries to the pudding. Notes: This recipe has been taken from the Change4Life ‘Supermeals for under a fiver’ cookbook

An Introduction: Sackville’s I feel privileged and very proud to be the new Headteacher of Sackville School and look forward to working with the East Grinstead community in preparing our young people to be confident, caring and high achieving citizens of the future. Having grown up in Riddlesdown and lived in the Copthorne/Horley area for many years, I have a real affinity for the area and am excited by this opportunity to give something back. Following a period of teaching in the north east of England after attending Durham University, I taught in Crawley for many years. Sackville is rightly known as a school where all young people, irrespective of background and ability, feel completely safe, secure and valued. Its dedicated staff expect a great deal in terms of work, behaviour and appearance. In return, all students are offered the chance to learn and grow together with the right to be

listened to and express themselves. Our numbers may be large, but students and parents are continually struck by the ‘small community’ culture and friendliness. The school is welcoming and calm with a vibrant Sixth Form into which so many students readily opt and where they make continually good progress from their starting points and are prepared well for the next stage in their education or careers. Sackville is a reflective school, always striving to improve by responding to constructive scrutiny with a sense of confidence, openness and honesty. Our primary aim is to provide the highest quality learning experience for our students, both within and beyond the classroom. The enthusiasm, care and community spirit makes Sackville a great place to learn and a great place to work. Visitors often comment on the

Remembering the Extra-Ordinary
The fourth EG10K Andy Ripley Memorial Race is taking place on the 22nd September - for details see What’s on Pages. Andy Ripley OBE (1 December 1947 – 17 June 2010) was an English Rugby Union International, who represented England from 1972 to 1976, and the Lions on their unbeaten 1974 tour of South Africa. We are pleased to be able to bring you a piece by Sports Reporter and Copthorne resident, Brendan Gallagher, who knew Andy Ripley personally:
Can it be three years already since Andy Ripley left us so prematurely? Surely not. His presence looms large and always will. Certainly I still think of him in the present tense, there is no sense yet of the big man having departed the stage, his spirit lives on. He is still with us. when I gather with rugby mates we often talk about Andy and there we never revert to those rather hushed and embarrassed tones traditionally employed when speaking about those who have died. We pile in just as we always doing swapping anecdotes and I like to think he would rather approve of that The last time I spent quality time with the great man we demolished a huge bowl of strawberries on his sun scorched patio in sleepy Dormansland - his prostate cancer was temporarily at bay and he was on a vitamin C health kick - and I asked him why he had never ventured into sports journalism in a serious way. Eloquent, perceptive and questioning, he would clearly have wiped the floor with all-comers, ex players and jobbing journos had the mood taken him.
“Easy. I did a few games for the Sunday Correspondent but I was sitting here with the family - in this very spot - late one gorgeous Friday night in September when I had a sort of reverse Damascus moment. Did I really want to get up at 5am next morning, catch the train to Waterloo, transfer to Euston, stop-start all my way to Leeds and then get a long taxi ride to Otley to report a Pilkington Cup game. And then repeat the journey home? “It was very late but I phoned the paper and told them that journalism wasn’t for me. Presumably some poor sod got then got a late call and had to leg it up to deepest Yorkshire.” I nearly choked. At just gone midnight one September’s evening in 1989 I was awoken by a call from my then boss Reg Hayter of Hayter’s sports agency. “Hope you’re sober because the Sunday Correspondent need somebody to get up to Otley for the cup match tomorrow, sorry today, because their man has cancelled.” “That poor sod was me,” I protested lamely but a grinning Rippers was already heading to the fridge to pour a cold beer by way of belated compensation. He had of course known for nearly 20 years but had considered indelicate to raise the question. Life was never dull with Andy. Around the time of the 2000 Olympics he got into modern pentathlon. One of his daughters was competing in the sport and it appealed to his maverick instincts and admiration for all-round, understated, talent. Within months he was chairman of GB Modern Pentathlon - he dug out his 1974

Lions blazer to wear to committee meetings, unstitched the emblem and replaced with a modern pentathlon badge - and not only gained invaluable column inches for the sport but applied his well developed business instincts to proceedings. He soon had me helping out with all sorts of programme notes, proposals and such-like and one summer’s morning the summons came to meet at his house at 6am - we live 10 minutes away - to join him on a trip to Millfield School on a missionary expedition. He and his committee were hoping to formalise and arrangement for them to host the World Championships. Why so early? Because he insisted on driving his clapped out Rolls Royce Silver Shadow - top speed now a spluttering 50mph - despite the presence of two perfectly serviceable normal cars in his drive. We were to ignore the motorways and make the 400-mile round trip from the Surrey/Sussex border to Somerset strictly via country lanes and backroads, an undertaking which entailed him driving for 10 hours solid. I, of course, loved every minute as he discoursed on the meaning of life, love, family, man’s laughable obsession with money and just occasionally rugby and sport.

“Prats - talking, writing and pontificating about things of which they know nothing - are the curse of modern sport, “ he started, quickly into his stride. “And I definitely include prominent former sportsmen, in fact they - we - are the worst of all. “My contribution to modern pentathlon - apart from making the coffee, putting out the deckchairs and acting as a cheerleader - is to fly at 37,000 feet and give an overview of what is going on. If I lose altitude and get any closer I will quickly make a complete idiot of myself and become a liability. A wise man knows when to butt out and make himself scarce.” For many of us Andy Ripley has always been a hero figure. In the Seventies when England were often - but not always - rubbish his sheer athleticism seemed to offer real long term hope and a template for future players although he was often met with selectorial suspicion. He was the star man when England won the world sevens in 1973 and for a short while England worked a number of elaborate tapped penalty moves to unleash his running power. Above all else though Rippers was my saviour in the first two years in journalism when, as a wannabee with the East Grinstead Courier, he was our one and only celebrity, an expression he certainly wouldn’t recognise. You name it, Rippers did it and I reported
it. Opening the Lingfield summer fete or fun run; crowning the carnival queen; addressing Dormansland Parish Council and the church restoration committee; guest speaker at East Grinstead rugby club where he also frequently brought a side down for the Sunshine Sevens; fundraiser in chief for East Grinstead’s new swimming pool; winner of our local triathlon and so on. Few in my experince ever got so involved with his local community “One of the rewards of becoming an old fart,” he told me more than once “is that you occasionally get time to reflect and think. I’ve finally settled on my little maxim for life. You can earn a living from what you get but you only get a life from what you give. Take it from me baby, giving is always best.” His speech - totally inadequate word - a few years ago at the rugby writers’ dinner shortly after he realised he had a battle for life itself on his hands with prostate cancer is the greatest single piece of oratory I have ever witnessed silencing a rowdy late night crowd of 800 rugbyheads in an instant, reducing us first to tears and then leaving us all with a smile and spring in our steps as he commanded everybody to get out there and squeeze every last ounce of love, fun and good times in what was left of our lives. Because life can be much shorter than you sometimes think. Alas.

MAKING THE BEST USE OF AN ARCHITECT By Phillip Mumford, Managing Director, Cowan Architects
So you want to convert the loft, knock down a wall or two, build an extension or construct your ideal home from scratch. Perhaps, you don’t actually know what you want but would like know what’s possible. Whatever your plans, an architect can play an important part even if it’s to say what’s realistic and what’s not. You can ask your architect to do as little or as much as you like from simply draw up your plans to project managing every detail of the process and the other professionals involved (landscape architects, engineers, quantity surveyors, interior designers, planning consultants, builders and subcontractors to name a few). This might cover advice on materials to be used, to time scales with the contractors and negotiating planning consents, building control and compliance requirements.
Architects and their expertise can also save you time by conducting site visits, meeting with local planners, submitting drawings for planning consent, dealing with tree preservation orders or difficult builders. Plus an architect can help save you money by advising on financial matters, coming up with the best design for your budget and getting competitive building quotes.
enormous amounts of knowledge which might be gold dust.
‘Over the longer term they can make your building energy efficient and so save on running costs,’ says Cowan’s Director of Architecture, Tom Longley. A great design should also increase your property’s market value and saleability, too.
II. Preparation of plans and documents for your approval and/or planning submission.
At Cowan Architects, we can help you navigate the vagaries of obtaining planning consent. A skilled architect can interpret your requirements and present them so that they fit ‘the rules’ as laid down at national and local level. This is especially important if you’re in a conservation area, as many of our clients are, or your property has listed status. Here, the insight of professionals can make the difference between success or failure at the starting gate.
IV. Supervision (Project Management) of the building process.
All good architects will give you a one-off consultation, and that’s really worthwhile because they may simply say that your dream cannot be done. Or they might give you a dream that you were never aware of. For a couple of hours of their time, you’ll get

Following the initial consultation, the architect will produce a fee quote for you. At Cowan Architects, we break this down into work stages as follows: I. Feasibility – putting your thoughts and ideas into sketch proposals so you can visualise and discuss your needs further.
III. Working drawings and tender documents in order to select a reliable value-formoney builder.
This can be priced on a lump sum, stage-by-stage basis, even if only as a guide for the later stages, so that you can set your budget. You do not even need to commit to the whole at the beginning but simply agree to each stage as the work progresses.

The garden at Gravetye Manor, on the edge of the Ashdown Forest, is an inspirational example of an historic garden resurgent. For fifty years Gravetye was home of William Robinson (1838-1935) one of the most remarkable gardeners and most prolific of garden writers of all time. Born in Ireland and a garden boy from the age of ten, Robinson came to work in the Royal Botanical Society’s garden in the Inner Circle of Regent’s Park in 1861. He used his position to travel the length and breadth of the British Isles exploring gardens, nurseries and the natural landscape and revelling in the simple charms of English cottage gardens. In 1867 he travelled to France as horticultural correspondent for the Chronicle, The Times and The Field at the Paris Exhibition. In 1868 came his Gleanings from French Gardens, then Parks, Promenades
and Gardens of Paris in 1869 and in 1870, three more books including that for which he is most renowned, The Wild Garden. Despite this prodigious output, in 1870 he crossed America, revelling especially in the gigantic forests of the western mountains. On the voyage back to England he determined to publish his own magazine, The Garden, and for the next fifty years The Garden and later Gardening Illustrated, provided what his friend Gertrude Jekyll described as his pulpit from which he preached his messages in favour of naturalistic planting, vehemently against bedding out and encouraging English gardeners to adopt French intensive gardening methods to provide cheaper food for poor people. These two immensely successful magazines brought Robinson a wide circle of friends and he drew on that circle

to produce his magnum opus, The English Flower Garden, in 1883. Throughout these frantically busybyears, with travels to southern Europe, North Africa and Madeira, Robinson lived above the offices of The Garden in Covent Garden but in his mid-forties he decided that it was time to take to the country. In 1884, at the age of 46, he acquired Gravetye Manor with its estate of 360 acres (150ha). The elegant 16th century manor house had come down the social scale to become a shabby farmhouse, surrounded by gloomy evergreens and spiky rockeries. Despite his daily commute into London and a continuous stream of new and revised titles, Robinson found time to renovate the house and ~ at last ~ to work on his own garden. He soon discovered that the ideas he had preached so enthusiastically in The Wild Garden were not so easily practiced in reality. Rabbits devoured the pinks edging his rose garden and girdled the hollies in his woods. Many of his new plants failed to appear and his suggestion that one could replace nettles and thistles with beautiful wild flowers then leave Nature to take its course proved an illusion. Nevertheless, he persevered, adding to his estate by the purchase of neighbouring land until, at his death, the “garden” at Gravetye extended to over a thousand acres (420ha). He planted hundreds of thousands of bulbs in the meadows below the house, thousands of trees, especially his beloved North American conifers, in the woodlands and developed flower, fruit and vegetable gardens around the house. Successes and failures were eloquently chronicled and illustrated in his Garden Beautiful (1907) and Gravetye Manor (1910).

On his death Robinson left most of his estate to the nation. The woodlands were transferred to the Forestry Commission but the gardens around the house suffered during and after World War II until the lease on the house was acquired by Peter Herbert in 1958. Mr Herbert converted the house into a Country House Hotel and, from 1958 until his retirement in 2004, brought the garden back to life in a truly Robinsonian manner. A brief hiatus followed the retirement but the hotel and its gardens now have enthusiastic new owners and in summer 2010 Tom Coward came from the late Christopher Lloyd’s garden at Great Dixter to become head gardener. Tom is rapidly injecting his own enthusiastic flair into Robinson’s legacy so the garden is once more on a rapid upward trajectory. The long and gradual accumulation of perennial weeds which beset most large gardens is being tackled by clearing borders and using bulbs and large patches of annuals to allow bindweed to be attacked in spring and through the summer while maintaining the colourful display so necessary to please hotel visitors. Now the borders are sufficiently clean to begin introducing permanent planting once more. The little South Garden below the main terrace is the most sheltered garden compartment, with palms, Amicia zygomeris and other marginally hardy plants exhibiting the luxuriance that Robinson advocated in his Subtropical Garden of 1870. In the Long Border below the huge terrace wall, clusters of bamboo
canes have marked the worst bindweed spots so that permanent denizens of the border can be safely replanted in weed-free areas. The walled kitchen garden, elliptical in shape to fit into the topography, once more displays a splendid array of vegetables, fruits and flowers, continuing a 140 year tradition of supplying the house with fresh produce and cut flowers. Below the walled garden a splendidly restored peach house and elegant Foster and Pearson frames, smart in their newly painted black and white trim, housed new plants in spring 2013. Of course a key feature of Gravetye’s garden must be its wild garden. The south-facing meadow below the house, on acid greensand, has sheets of daffodils and pale blue Puschkinia libanotica in spring followed by native wild flowers in summer. In the orchard west of the main terrace new fruit trees have been underplanted with Narcissus obvallaris, fritillaries and other spring bulbs. To the north, above the house, on a ridge of acid clay, is an area of unusual shrubs and trees underplanted with a succession of flowers from scillas and fritillaries in spring to montbretias and Robinson’s much-loved ‘starworts’ (Michaelmas daisies) in autumn. Gravetye has obviously taken on a new lease of life. Even the fastidious William Robinson would have approved. By Richard Bisgrove, author of ‘William Robinson: The Wild Gardener’.
