Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

HAROLD MACMILLAN Local History Notes by Dorothy Hatswell of the East Grinstead Museum British prime minister Harold Macmillan lived in Birch Grove on the edge of Ashdown Forest near Chelwood Gate for many years of his life. The house was originally built in 1926 for Macmillan’s parents Maurice and Helen, it is a Grade II listed building. This was also the venue for Macmillan’s historic meeting with U.S. President John F. Kennedy in June 1963. Looking to his childhood, Maurice Harold Macmillan was born on February 10th 1894, in Cadogan Place in Chelsea, to Maurice Crawford Macmillan and Helen Belles. His father was head of the publishing firm started up by his grandfather. His mother was a socialite from Indiana. He had two older brothers, Daniel, named for his paternal grandfather, and Arthur. He was educated at Eton and Balliol College, Oxford, reading the Greats. This degree consists mainly of Greek and Latin, languages he had studied from the age of seven. He passed the first part but decided to join the Grenadier Guards at the outbreak of World War One. He served with distinction in France, being severely wounded in the hip on the Somme. This finished his military service and left him with a slight limp which he carried the rest of his life. He did not return to Oxford after the war. Out of his group of twenty eight students only he and

one other survived. He said it could never be the same as it was before the war. Instead he joined the family publishing house, and stayed there until 1940 when his ministerial duties demanded too much of his time. On April 21st 1920 he married Lady Dorothy Cavendish, daughter of the Ninth Duke of Devonshire, they had a son, Maurice, who would predecease him and three daughters, Caroline, Catherine and Sarah. He was elected as MP for Stockton-on-Tees in 1924, a seat he lost briefly in 1929 but regained two years later. When he was elevated to the peerage he chose this constituency as part of his title. Macmillan served in a non-combatant role in World War Two and continued as an MP. When the Conservatives swept back into power in the election of 1951 under Sir Anthony Eden, he quickly rose to ministerial prominence. In quick succession he became Minister for Housing, Minister of Defence, Foreign Secretary and Chancellor of the Exchequer. When Eden resigned in 1957, the Queen called on Macmillan to form a Government. His knowledge of the poverty

he had seen in Stockton in the 1930s made him very sympathetic to the needs of the less well off. He built 300,000 houses a year during his stint as Housing Minister and now as Prime Minister he was determined to raise the living standards of all the people. His success with this aim he acknowledged in his famous phrase.” We have never had it so good.” The cartoonist, Vicki, nicknamed him, “Super Mac”, intending it to be derogatory, instead it caught on as a term of affection. His foreign policies were also proving successful. He played a leading part during the Cold War with Russia and helped avert the Cuban Missile Crisis. He strongly advocated the use of the Nuclear Deterrent and made his famous “Winds Of Change” speech which supported the movement against apartheid in South Africa. He was conscious that Britain needed closer economic ties with Europe and was devastated when Charles de Gaulle

blocked Britain’s entry in to the European Economic Community. He negotiated the nuclear test ban. This last achievement earning him the respect of both Khrushchev and John F. Kennedy for his patience and diplomacy. Several problems and scandals occurred in 1963. The most significant culminating in the resignation of John Profumo. Macmillan was also misdiagnosed with prostate cancer, at the same period. These all led to his resignation in October. He retired to Birch Grove and led a quiet life on his estate coming out occasionally with criticism towards his successors. Margaret Thatcher, he accused of, “selling off the family silver”. He also disliked her assertion, “that there was no such thing as society”. Harold Wilson also was a target of his wit. Wilson had spoken of not having any boots when he was young. Macmillan’s retort was that it was because they could not find any big enough. He died peacefully at home at Birch Grove a few months short of his ninety third birthday. He was buried in the family plot in the churchyard of St Giles, Horsted Keynes in a private funeral. The nation remembered his life and work later that year in a memorial service attended by the Queen. As Macmillan himself said, “Memorial services are the cocktail parties of the geriatric set.” His undoubted political successes and his aptitude for coining memorable phrases will ensure that he will live on in the minds of the nation.

East Grinstead in September So here we are at the end of the summer already. The weather seems to have thrown a mixed bag at us but I hope you managed to get yourselves out and about and enjoyed our beautiful area. This time of year is a treat for the senses as the season changes and nature delivers an abundance of fruits and colours. East Grinstead still has some surprises up its sleeve for things to do throughout September and October. Step inside an air raid shelter at East Grinstead Museum’s ‘Home Front’ exhibition which continues until 13th and look out for events happening

during the Heritage Open Day scheme. Standen NT is Free to visit on Saturday 12th and the East Grinstead Society is leading a guided walk around the Historic High St. Sunday 13th starting at 3.30pm from St Swithun’s Church. Sackville College is open too until the middle of the month. The Bluebell Railway has evening Fish & Chip Specials running on 4th,18th and 25th. Open Hands, Opening Doors Open hands is a charity based not too far from East Grinstead which works with children and their families living in extreme poverty in Romania. They support marginalised families to escape poverty, encourage inclusion into society and to lead independent and fulfilling lives. It’s five years since my wife, Rebekka, and I started our own charity. Back in 2010 things were hectic! We’ve just had a new baby and a lively 5 year old boy, and my wife was just about to start four years of social work studies. Running a charity during this period was a big commitment. Open Hands might take up a lot of our time, both my wife and I work voluntarily for our charity, but when you’re in Romania and you see these families transforming their lives and children escaping generational poverty it makes all the late nights working for Open Hands worth it. The truth is working for Open Hands is the most fulfilling and rewarding thing you can do, it often doesn’t feel like “work”! This year Open Hands has been particularly exciting for us as we’ve been approved by the Romanian government as an official Romanian charity. This is tremendous news for us, as it allows us to work closer with local schools and town mayors, for they really hold all the power in Romania. We’ve also just started two exciting projects, a playgroup for disadvantaged children and we’re raising funds to buy a transition home, a safe home where families from the notoriously bleak Romanian slums can learn life skills and a chance for a new beginning. I wanted to share with you a little bit about the playgroup, but if you’d like to know more about the transition home we hope to buy and more about

how we work with families please see our website. Most of the children Open Hands supports have grown up in extreme poverty and often hostile environments, they’ve never had the chance to play or explore like other kids do. The thing about children and poverty is that it really hurts to see it. The latest UNICEF statistic tells us that a staggering 1 in 3 children in Romania live under the poverty line of just 1 US dollar a day. Many of these kids live on the very margins of society surviving without the very basic means for survival, in degrading circumstances without a sanitary system, education or health care. They also frequently lack food and clothing and receive no education. These kids didn’t choose to grow up with nothing, to not have clothes or toys, to have dirty faces, very little food and to grow up living in a tiny shack which leaks when it rains, and sharing a bed with their parents and brothers and sisters. Many of the families in our program have only known poverty, this generational poverty is so hard to break because it’s a lifestyle not by choice but by circumstance, many parents are desperate to escape and to offer a better future for their kids, they just don’t know how. Whenever I see these kids, my heart melts and you can’t help but want to fight for their future. We want all the children in our program to have the education their parents never did, and that poverty shouldn’t define a person for their life. The children we work with are too poor to own any toys, and we often saw children who struggled to just interact and play safely. We wanted to do something about this and earlier this year we started

After this there is structured play, followed by snack time. Here the children are taught how

Walking festival

Best Foot Forward this Autumn Sixty organised walks are on offer at this year’s Sussex Coast & Country Walking Festival taking place over the nine days from Saturday 26 September until Sunday 4 October. The festival, organised by Wealden District Council, features walks through the enchanting High Weald and the wild and wonderful Ashdown Forest to coastal walks. The festival aims to provide something for everyone – from short family walks with children’s activities to more challenging hikes when a good pair of walking shoes is in order. Last year more than 650 people took part. 12

For the first time there is a walk in celebration of ‘Mad Jack’ Fuller, the notorious Sussex folly builder and patron of the sciences who was christened at Waldron. Actor/ historian Geoff Hutchinson will lead the walk in period costume and provide tales, intrigue to amuse all, during the four mile walk. This walk includes a free art workshop where children will be encouraged to make their own ‘folly’ in Lucas Hall. Other walks include The Making of the High Weald, a three mile walk which takes you back 700 years to the medieval landscape around Mayfield; and Navigating the South Downs, a chance for satnav users to return to the days

Gardening in Summer area and are very easy to look after and care for.

September is an interesting time in the garden, probably in my Grandparents day they were looking to tidy the garden and prepare it for the coming winter, but things in the gardening world have changed somewhat, in particular the milder autumns which means we can prolong the colour and interest in the garden right through to early November. There is an abundance of plants you can choose to give good colour and the hot colour favourites are the many varieties of crocosmia that are now available; the vibrant red of C. Lucifer or the startling orange of C. Emily McKenzie as well as other softer yellows and oranges, they certainly light up a shady

A more delicate but very hardy autumn flower is the schizostylis, it reliably comes back year after year, clumping up and improving its display with very little effort from you! The must-have berry in the garden at this time is the tiny violet purple berry of Callicarpa bodinieri ‘Profusion’. Not only do the berries last through to Christmas but early on the leaves also give a fine display of red and orange. You just have to excuse this plant from being pretty boring the rest of the year. Grasses look great in the autumn garden, plant in threes or fives so when the wind blows the grasses create a graceful swaying movement throughout the border. They’re easy to look after with a good haircut in the spring. You can think about grasses for your patio pots as well.

In addition to all this start to tidy the garden, get it ready for a good mulch next month, if you’re still feeding your plants it’s time to stop now. Happy gardening… Clare Parkinson Horticultural Manager and Garden Designer Imberhorne Lane Nursery

Cut to the Coconut You may have already heard about health product of the moment coconut oil and already ushered it into your kitchen, but did you know you can also swap out some of your beauty products for this do-it-all wonder oil. If you feel like giving it a whirl, it may well be worth a try: Body oil As a solid, coconut oil’s creamy texture makes it the perfect light moisturizer to slather all over. Apply a little right after a shower. Add in a few drops of lavender oil for a lovely relaxing scent. Lip balm Coconut oil is ultra-hydrating. You can put a little into a spare contact lens holder or other small empty container and dab it on throughout the day. Cuticle softener Swipe a small amount of the oil onto each of your cuticles, allowing it to sink in. It will strengthen your nails and hydrate the delicate cuticle skin, making your hands look more youthful. Under-eye/face cream The skin under your eyes is delicate and prone to fine lines, puffiness, and dark circles. After cleansing, Just rub a pinch in between fingers to warm it up before patting it underneath your eyes. If your skin is dry then you can use it on the whole of your face, after cleansing and toning before bedtime. You will

feel the difference within a week of doing this. Frizz fighter Rub a pea size amount of coconut oil between your fingers to warm it up, and then apply it to the bottom couple inches of your hair for all day frizz protection. If you have thicker, coarser hair, apply the coconut oil from mid-shaft to ends for added frizz control. Bonus: It also leaves hair extra shiny and soft! Cheekbone Highlighter Dab a little liquified coconut oil onto the tops of your cheekbones, cupid’s bow (the dip above your upper lip) and just above eyebrows for hydrated skin that looks lit from within. Makeup remover Just a teaspoon (or less) can take off a day’s worth of makeup with ease, no matter the staying power. Massage a dollop of warmed, liquified coconut oil straight onto skin, whipe with cotton wool and watch as makeup comes off smoothly and easily, then rinse with warm water. Body scrub Mix quarter cup of sea salt, with an equal amount of melted coconut oil, and then use your hands to rub it over any rough patches of skin. The scrub moisturizes while removing dead skin cells for softer skin. You can also add extra salt and rub on the tougher skin on your feet and elbows.

Ramble in the Jungle Phil Gorlach, of Forest Row and Kieran O’Sullivan, of East Grinstead are taking the courageous step of hiking across Vietnam in order to raise money for St Catherine’s Hospice. The hike takes place in April next year and will see them trek through varied terrain of jungles and mountainous villages in northern Vietnam, in the Pu Long nature reserve. Here is a Q&A with them both about their upcoming challenge of a lifetime: What inspired you both to take on this challenge? K: I’ve always wanted to commit to a challenge like this and take myself out of my comfort zone, and raising ten hours of care for each day we trek for St. Catherine’s is a great cause. I had no idea it was so heavily reliant on donations; I think it is amazing that they have a whole team of people who have to raise £15,000 a day just to keep it all going. P: I have a couple of reasons why I have decided to take on this challenge and trip. One being the fact I have never done anything like this before, and I like to push myself. I have also been to Vietnam before and fell in love with it but I have never been to the area where we plan to trek. The other reason is because I have gone through the process of needing day care for a family member, and I know how tough it is to get help. So this cause means a lot to me and I know how much we are helping by undertaking this trek to raise money for the hospice.

20

Photo courtesy of Samantha Wordie Photography. What do you think will be the hardest part?

appreciate how easy life is for us here.

K: Probably the jungle climate and the ‘creatures’ within will be the hardest part of the trek but who knows it may be something we don’t expect.

P: Apart from achieving our goals and raising money which will feel amazing, I’m also excited for the experiences and meeting new people and challenging myself every day. I think it’s important to take yourself out of your comfort zone and I believe this trek will do just that. It’s for an amazing charity and I will feel seriously proud of myself by completing this challenge.

P: I think the hardest part of this trek will be walking in the heat and muggy temperatures for 6/7 hours a day. Waking up every morning, knowing you have to walk all day. Also the vast amount of mosquitos and sleeping in huts will add to the exhaustion of the trek. What are you most looking forward to? K: Being with a group of likeminded people, doing 6/7 hours a day of walking and also experiencing the culture. I think I may be in for a bit of a shock too, but it will probably make me

living Visit: w w w.egliving.co.uk

What training are you having to undertake to prepare yourselves? K: St Catherine’s has been doing long walks around Sussex which I participate in, but I also run every other day, averaging about 20 miles a week, so that is what I am doing to prepare by keeping myself fit.

P: Training wise I keep myself fit by playing football 3 times a week but other than that the charity organisers are organising regular walks for us all to do every 2 weeks. I think the hardest part of this trek will be the heat and 6/7 hours of walking a day through some rough terrain. What has the highlight been so far? K: Contacting various people companies trying to get them to help us out as well as annoying all my friends to hand over their money! But we are early into the raising so we have various plans and ridiculous outfits ready to attract the public’s attention and money of course. P: So far I’ve enjoyed planning ways of raising money and getting in touch with people I have not spoken to in a while and basically hassling them for money. Also learning about the charity has been eye opening and makes you realise how important it is to help with the funding.

The British Wildlife Centre (BWC) last month launched ‘Pip’s Corner’, a wildlife themed activity area for young children, named after cartoon star Pip the Squirrel, the cartoon star of children’s DVD ‘Pip the Squirrel & Friends’. Actress Finty Williams, who is the voice of Pip the Squirrel, opened the new play area and was joined at the launch by her mother and supporter of the centre, Dame Judi Dench. BWC Owner, David Mills, came up with the initial idea of Pip the Squirrel, and here we are able to bring you a Q&A with David about this: Where did the idea of Pip the Squirrel come from and how did that go from idea to reality?

How did Pips Corner proceed from there and what are you hoping to achieve with this?

I was thinking of ways to engage very young children with our native wildlife, creatures they see all around in their daily lives but do not necessarily know anything about them.

Pip’s Corner is an activity area for small children to let off a little steam doing animal related things, like building a herons nest, explore a badger sett, etc. I created this area specifically for children to engage with Pip and also to promote Pip to visitors while they are here at the centre. Other activities include: an otter bank for climbing over and sliding down; red squirrel skills - stepping stones, log path and a climbing frame to test balance; climbing up to the watch tower for wonderful views of the deer park and surrounding countryside, and more.

Inspired by the success of the Tractor Ted series of DVDs for children about farming I set about creating a small production company to develop and produce a series of wildlife DVDs aimed at mainly the pre school market. The red squirrel is the BWC logo, so naturally I created a cartoon red squirrel as the main character for the series. Pip is the link to the real life footage of the animals all filmed here at the centre. Each episode tells a story of how different animals cope with various things in their everyday lives, to make learning fun and engage young children to connect with the wonderful native wildlife that lives all around. Series one is out now along with an accompanying book which is complementary to the DVD.

24

What are you hoping the future holds for Pip the Squirrel? We hope in time to produce a whole series of Pip DVDs , introducing new cartoon characters and all filmed here at the centre. Series two is in post production now and will be available along with the accompanying book late October in time for the Christmas market.

Background to Pip the Squirrel’s creation A survey commissioned by the BWC last year found that a massive 95% of infant school children cannot recognise iconic British species such as otters and badgers. Farm animals and exotic species were far more familiar. Half the children questioned knew what a lion looked like and were able to name a cow, compared to only 5% who could identify an otter and 3% a red squirrel. BWC owner David Mills said: “The results of the survey don’t surprise me. It’s why I established the British Wildlife Centre, to give people, especially children, the chance to see our native species up close and learn more about them”.

The British Wildlife Centre has one of the finest collections of native wildlife in Britain. Visitors can see and learn about over 40 different species of British wild animals and birds, all housed in large natural enclosures in an attractive countryside setting. Their residents range from tiny harvest mice through to Britain’s largest land mammal, the magnificent red deer. More details can be found on: www.britishwildifecentre.co.uk, Tel: 01342 834658.

100 Years and Still Going Strong It’s the centenary of the Women’s Institute this month. Here is just a little of its early history: The first Women’s Institute was formed in Stoney Creek, Ontario, Canada in 1897 as a branch of the Farmer’s Institute. Inspired by a talk given by Adelaide Hoodless at a meeting of the Farmer’s Institute, local farmers Erland and Janet Lee were instrumental in setting up the new organisation. They were supported by the Ontario government who appointed Laura Rose to be the first organiser in 1899. The movement brought women from isolated communities together and offered training in home economics, child care and those aspects of farming that were traditionally done by women, such as poultry keeping and small farm animal husbandry. In 1915, the First WI in Britain was founded during the First World War to encourage countrywomen to get involved in growing and preserving food to help to increase the supply of food to the war-torn nation. The first WI in Britain was formed under the auspices of the Agricultural Organisation Society (AOS). AOS Secretary, John Nugent Harris, appointed Canadian Madge Watt to set up WIs across the UK. The first one was at Llanfair PG, on Anglesey, North Wales on September 16th 1915, and the first WI in England was Singleton WI in Sussex . In 1916 the AOS set up a Women’s Institute sub committee to oversee the work and Lady Denman was appointed Chairman. By the end of the year, 40 WIs had opened, the earliest in Wales and subsequently in England. By 1917, 137 WIs had been opened. Then when neighbouring WIs in Sussex decided to meet together, they formed the first federation. Because the WI movement was growing so fast the government decided it would be more appropriate for the responsibility for opening WIs to be handed over from the AOS to the Women’s Llanfair PG WI - First WI in the UK

Adelaide Hoodless – founder Section of the Food Department of the Board of Agriculture. At the same time, although the Board of Agriculture continued to fund the formation of WIs, the organisation became independent. The National Federation of Women’s Institutes was formed on October 16th, when the rules were adopted and an executive committee elected. Lady Denman was elected Chairman and Grace Hadow Vice Chairman. The annual subscription was set at two shillings. By the end of 1918 there were 199 WIs and seven county federations. The paid organisers were unable to keep up with the demand to form new WIs and so the first training school for WI Voluntary County Organisers was held. In order to fund the new organisation, and to promote the handicraft work being done, the First National Handicrafts Exhibition was held at the Horticultural Halls in Westminster. Following the end of the war, by the end 1919, there were 1405 WIs across the UK and the rest as they say is history. To find your most local WI visit: www.thewi.org.uk.

Brilliant beef curry This tasty beef curry is easy to make, either on the hob or in a slow cooker. Serves: 4 adults Preparation time: 20 mins Cooking time: 2 hrs 0 mins

Ingredients:

240g lean braising steak cut into chunks 2 medium onions chopped 1 peppers, any colour deseeded and chopped 2 carrots 2 garlic cloves 2 tbsp curry powder 2 cans chopped tomatoes 2 tbsp mango chutney 2 tbsp tomato puree 200g easy cook long grain white rice

What to do: 1. Brown the beef in a large saucepan or flameproof casserole dish over a low heat. Add the onion and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. 2. Add the peppers, carrots and garlic. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring often to stop it from sticking, adding alittle water if necessary. 3. Add the curry powder and stir well to mix, then add the tomatoes, mango chutney, 300ml water and the tomato puree. Cover and simmer gently for about 1 ½-2 hours, or until the meat is tender, adding more water if necessary. 4. About 15 minutes before serving, cook the rice according to packet instructions. Serve with the curry. Tip 1: For a vegetarian version, use soya chunks instead of beef. Tip 2: You could make this in a slow cooker, transferring it at step 3, though you won’t need the 300ml water. Tip 3: For extra heat, add a generous pinch of dried chilli flakes when you stir in the curry powder.

White vinegar Keep your dishwasher extra clean with white vinegar. Pour ½ cup into the detergent cups and run the empty machine for a complete cycle. Fill an empty spray bottle with white vinegar to clean chrome and stainless-steel fixtures, and to remove scum, from your bath, tiles, etc. Baking Powder and Lemon Juice Try this to get rid of mould and mildew on tiles and shower curtains: a paste of equal parts lemon juice and baking powder. Spread on the mixture, leave for a couple of hours, then rinse off. Paintbrush A dry paintbrush can be a fabulous duster to reach the grooves of your collectibles for more fragile objects you can use a dry pastry brush.

The Award Winning, Sussex Healthcare Group are excited to announce the opening of brand new purpose built care facilities in Broadbridge Heath, near Horsham. “One adult in particular surprised us all. We had no idea how cognitively able he was, it is hard to get much response from him, but when we introduced him to the eye gaze straight away he realized he was controlling it by himself. He got through a lot of the games quickly! He was deliberately closing his eyes to stop the game and starting again, teasing us! It was a very emotional day for us.” Registered Manager

Bringing an exciting new service to potential service users, these facilities are comprised of two buildings, each purpose-built, consisting of four 10 bedded units. The Granary unit provides nursing support to younger people with acquired brain injury and neurological conditions. This specialist care service, with nursing and physiotherapy input has been equipped with all the latest technological aids, including a hydrotherapy pool and a salt cave.
