Dear Residents, Whats inside this month Welcome to the July issue. This month we have a wonderful article about Churchill’s home Chartwell which is of course not far from East Grinstead. As we have the Olympics this summer our local history notes are all about Olympians/Paralympians of our town. With summer upon us, we’re hoping for hot weather and we may even get some ‘Dog Days of Summer’, to find out what that’s all about see page 22. We may shortly be getting a new ‘Brit School’ for Mid Sussex which will be a huge boost to the arts which is already strong in this area, see our Q&A with the lady who will be making this happen.

A TAILOR COMES TO TOWN have a wide knowledge and understanding of quality, style and generally how clothes should fit and what clients should be looking for. What inspired you to open your new shop in East Grinstead?
You may have noticed in the past few weeks driving through the High Street the old Bike Shop being renovated. We bring you the exciting news of the fantastic, customer-centric new shop: Dixon Anderson, due to open in August. This shop brings men the type of clothes that not only suit their bodies but are exactly what they want - without compromise. Yes! They can even make jeans for men to exact specifications! Here is a Q&A with shop owner and tailor extraordinaire, Gerry Dixon: What is your background in the tailoring business? I’ve been involved in fashion and tailoring for over forty years. I started my career back in the 70’s at Moss Bros when it was still very traditional. I had the most wonderful education there, learning about all aspects of tailoring and all the traditions that go with it. I’ve also worked with several top international brands including Giorgio Armani and Corneliani. As a result I
I’ve always worked in London, either in Mayfair or West End but the commute has finally taken its toll. My wife and I moved to East Grinstead just over a year ago and we were very impressed with the town and surrounding areas and after talking to a few people, I realised that there isn’t anybody offering a dedicated Made to Measure service for clients who don’t necessarily want to travel to London and would prefer a more personal, local service. It seemed an ideal opportunity to close my West End showroom and open a shop that is only 5 minutes away by car. Why do you think customers might choose your services over others? As far as I am aware there isn’t another business offering a dedicated made to measure tailoring service within a 20 mile radius and, even if there was, they couldn’t match my quality, fit, attention to detail or my experience which, combined, is an unbeatable formula. InCOMMUNITY terms ofBUSINESS the finished DIRECTORY product to your customers, what do you most pride yourself?

I still get a great kick from creating a beautiful garment from scratch. Working with the client, advising him on fabric choice, linings, buttons, stitching as well as individual styling details and the alterations needed to provide the perfect fit. What local feedback have you had so far? The feedback from everyone I’ve spoken to has been extremely positive. Local shop keepers think that the addition of a top quality business offering exclusive product and excellent service is fantastic for the town/East Grinstead. Why did you choose that shop in particular? I was very lucky that No 75 High Street became available. It’s in my preferred position at the far end of the High Street, near Sackville College and opposite the row of 14th century buildings. The shop is set back from the road and enjoys high visibility whether you are entering or leaving the town from the Forest Row end. If all this wasn’t enough, there is excellent parking facilities for customers just outside the shop. A NEW BRIT SCHOOL FOR US?
Art has always been strong in this part of Sussex and Suzanne Gielgud of the prestigious Gielgud Academy is embarking on a very courageous dream of a new free school for Mid Sussex which will espouse the arts in all their glory. Here she explains:
How will this tie in with your dance school will it specialise in dance in particular? GAPA has grown in size and reputation and our dance training is at an extremely high level, thanks to our high profile professional dance faculty and the wonderful purpose built facilities at the Hub. We will further develop our dance provision alongside our drama and musical theatre strands, adding two additional strands - art (encompassing art, design, photography, costume and fashion, theatre and set and design) and media and technology (film and TV production, computer design and technology). I believe that we will be able to offer every child at least one genre of art form that they are interested and gifted in. What reception have you had so far? The reception so far has been phenomenal, from parents and children in the locality, the Department for Education, the Free Schools Network, West Sussex County Council (WSCC) and Mid Sussex District Councillors as well as high profile names from the arts world. Legendary Dame Beryl Grey, retired British prima ballerina who lives locally in Danehill, is right behind us every step of the way. She wrote to me recently saying: “You and your staff have achieved an outstanding high standard of dance in a variety of different styles giving children of all ages an education in working together and in a happy harmonious atmosphere. I sincerely hope your attempt to acquire this building will be looked upon with favour and an understanding of the true value good dance training adds to the lives of young people.”
What was your main inspiration behind starting this new free school? When I started the Gielgud Academy (GAPA) five years ago it was always with the intention to turn it into a full time school, so that children in this area could benefit from the same amazing experience that I had during my childhood. I grew up in East Grinstead and was lucky enough to be a pupil at the Bush Davies School which was the leading vocational school in the county. Sadly, it closed in 1988 and many of the school buildings and its theatre (the Adeline Genée) were demolished in 2010, so in 2011 I decided that I had to build a school in its honour which would be inspired by its achievements and, like Bush Davies, would be a Centre of Excellence for education and the arts. We’ve been running GAPA part time on Saturdays Why do you think a school such as this is needed and every evening since then, with huge success. in this area? There is a desperate need for more However when I heard the news that Central Sussex primary school places across Sussex and from 2017 College was closing down its 6th form colleges in there will be no more state funded 6th form A level both East Grinstead and Haywards Heath, I knew this provision at all in Haywards Heath or East Grinstead. was the time to turn GAPA into the full time school There is also a desire in this area for a full time school I had envisioned. The Haywards Heath campus (The with an arts specialism because currently children Hub), where we’ve been based, has state of the gifted in the arts have to travel up to the Brit School, art dance, music and drama studios, as well as a or to London, to combine their education with theatre and three floors of new modern classrooms professional level performing arts training. including science labs, photographic studios and spacious art and design studios. It is the perfect To take part in the survey venue for a full time, all-through school for children and provisionally register interest go to age 5-18, offering a strong academic provision with COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/GAPAfreeschool a specialism in the arts. We are proposing to run this GAPA’s telephone number is 01444 446882 as a free school, so that all children can benefit from it, regardless of their parents’ income. Living 8

EAST GRINSTEAD OLYMPIANS LOCAL HISTORY NOTES by Dorothy Hatswell of the East Grinstead Museum
As the Olympic Games come round again, in South America for the first time, it is perhaps appropriate that we remember citizens of East Grinstead who were selected to compete in Olympic Games on past occasions. The earliest is Lilian Daisy Styles who was born on June 20th 1905 in Maresfield. Her parents, Thomas and Caroline, farmed at School House Farm, Stumble Wood, near Birch Grove, Harold Macmillan’s estate. The youngest of five children born to her parents, Thomas and Caroline, she was christened Lilian but seems to have always been called by her second name, Daisy. The family moved to Lingfield, at some stage, to the Bays, a smallholding growing fruit and vegetables for local markets. Lilian was living in Littlehampton working for a greengrocer when she won five shillings on a bet that she could not run the four or so miles around Rustington. She then joined Littlehampton
Athletics Club, and later Haywards Heath AC. She was then invited to join the London Olympiads. She represented Great Britain at many international matches and was WAAA Cross Country Champion six times between 1927 and 1938. She was twice selected for the Olympics in 1932 and 1936. She was unable to go on either occasion, once because only a men’s team were sent, due to lack of funding, and the second time because she was seriously ill. She captained the England team when they competed in France in 1938. Her athletic career finished in 1939 when England played Scotland at the White City.
She worked in the family shop, in Middle Row, for many years, selling the fresh vegetables and fruit grown at their smallholding in Lingfield. Later, in the 1960s, the family purchased part of the Orchard Estate on the Holtye Road in East Grinstead. They gradually began to diversify and concentrated on plants rather than produce. They supplied the East Grinstead Town Council with their award-winning hanging baskets. Daisy died on Christmas Day 1992, at the age of eightyseven. She never married but one of her nieces now runs the Orchard Nurseries. Another resident of East Grinstead who was selected for the Olympic Games was Richard Leman. Born in East Grinstead in July 1959, he was the third of four sons born to Dennis and Joyce Leman. He attended Gresham’s School in Norfolk from 19731977. There the boys played rugby in the Michaelmas Term, and hockey in the Lent Term. Richard captained the hockey 1st XI during his last years there. He became a member of East Grinstead Hockey Club and was chosen for the 1984 Olympic

LOCAL HISTORY NOTES CONTINUED
“At outside right we had Richard Leman who was very smart, very steady and extremely good at manoeuvring the ball in very tight situations.” Richard was also a member of the team who came second in the World Cup in 1986. Richard has continued to support East Grinstead sport in many ways. He was the first President of the East Grinstead Sports Club after the Hockey Club and the Cricket Club amalgamated in 1989. He has also served on the Town Council’s Sports Development Group and attended many local sports groups to present awards. He awarded the medals at the Mid Sussex Wellbeing Mile Fun Runs in May, in East Grinstead, wearing his 1988 Olympic tracksuit. His gold and bronze medals were also on display.
Sadly, he died in 2014 at the age of fifty-six. Richard was found at his East Grinstead home after suffering a brain haemorrhage. His long-time carer said: “He desperately wanted to qualify (for the 2012 Paralympics), but missed out by a couple of points. He was very proud of what he had achieved. I got the chance to iron his England kit after Atlanta. He said, ‘You can burn anything else but not that one.’” Richard was not the only one to be proud of his achievements; the whole town was.

team which won the bronze medal in Los Angeles. Richard was later elected player of the year. He was again selected for the next Olympics in Seoul in 1988. Great Britain won the gold medal after beating Germany 3-0 in the final even though they had been beaten by them in an earlier round. A fellow player wrote of him:
he was quite young. A mechanical engineer by trade, he was seriously injured in a car crash in 1995. Left paralysed from the waist down and confined to a wheelchair, he was determined to still live life to the full. As he could not move his lower limbs he concentrated on improving the strength in his arms. He started to throw the discus and the club and did so well that he was selected for four Paralympic Games. He stood for the Chairmanship of the British Olympic Association, but later withdrew when he learned that Seb Coe was also standing. He said: “Recognising that...we find ourselves having the person who led...the delivery of the most successful Olympics and Paralympic Games in history standing for election...I have decided to put my full support behind Seb Coe.” He is now a successful businessman having founded two recruitment companies for which he has been given several awards.

The Dog Days of Summer "Dog days" refers to the hot, sultry, most uncomfortable days of summer, originally in areas around the Mediterranean Sea; we rarely truly experience these types of heatwaves - and in any case if we do they never last long enough for us to really suffer. The expression was soon colloquially absorbed across other areas of Europe. Does it have anything to do with feeling like you're 'sweating like a dog' because you're boiling all the time? No. The expression was drawn from the coincidence of very warm temperatures in the early civilizations in both North Africa and the Near East with the rising, at sunrise, of the ever bright Orion's dog, the 'dog star', in the constellation Canis Major. The dog star's official name is Sirius, captured in modern culture by the Sirius Black character in the Harry Potter stories who could turn into a dog at will.
The association of this phrase with weather traces back to the Ancient Egyptians, in the poetic text of the Greeks and later still in Roman texts. Indeed an elaborate folklore associated with Sirius was propagated by the Greeks… "(Its) first appearance… in the morning skies during the final days of July and early August indicated the arrival of the sweltering heat of late summer… associated with heat, fire, and even fevers.” In the epic poem 'the Iliad' by Homer (the Greek Homer, not Simpson!) is written: 'Sirius rises late in the dark, liquid sky On summer nights, star of stars, Orion's Dog they call it, brightest Of all, but an evil portent, bringing heat And fevers to suffering humanity.' In England we might be happy for any dog days to occur at all (please?!), but clearly this sentiment is not shared in hotter climes where it used to apparently give way to a gamut of ills. Through the 19th century, COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY it continued to be perceived as an ominous time of evil, wherein "the Sea boiled, the

Wine turned sour, Dogs grew mad, and all other creatures became languid; causing to man, among other diseases, burning fevers, hysterics, and phrensies (frenzies)" as illuminated by Brady in his Clavis Calendaria (1813). These days dog days are standing-under-the-air-con-times in hot southern countries. In business dog days can refer to the time in July when it is typically one of the quietest months of the year for stock trading, so the traditional meanings of heat and disease have been extended to business inactivity. The Anglo-Saxons considered the dog days to run from the 14th July to 5th September. The Old Farmer's Almanac lists the traditional period of the Dog Days as the 40 days beginning 3rd July and ending 11th August, coinciding of course with the rising of the Dog Star. These are also the days of the year with the least rainfall in the Northern Hemisphere. The metaphorical sense of the dog days has been captured in modern culture in prose, poetry, songs, et al. CHURCHILL’S HOME COMFORTS OF CHARTWELL Chartwell is just north of the East Grinstead, it is famous for its eternal association with one of the most famous leaders in history: Winston Churchill. Here is a little of its history: has become known as his wilderness years in the 1930s when he was out of office and did much of his writing to keep the family finances afloat. Many know of Churchill’s role as Prime Minister and wartime leader but few know of his artistic side, a passion brought to life by Chartwell with its inspiring landscape and views of the Kent countryside. It was only at the age of 41 that Churchill began to pick up a paintbrush at all after his sister-in-law encouraged him to try painting – it became an engrossing occupation remaining with him for life.
It is said that home is where the heart is and in the heart of the Weald of Kent is the beloved former home of ex-British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill and his family for more than 40 years. 800 acres of rolling farmland and woodland had been part of Chartwell since 1848, but it wasn’t until 1921 that the land was divided into smaller lots and sold at auction – in 1922 Churchill bought a lot. The lot Churchill bought was a house with land totalling 82 acres; the house Churchill called home was where he brought up his young family and would go on to be remembered very affectionately. Situated two miles south of Westerham, Churchill loved the house and its views – the grounds gave Churchill the peace and tranquillity that he craved during the testing times of the Second World War. He relaxed by painting and by transforming the garden with new lakes and new brick walls built with his own hands; the legacy of both of these pastimes can still be seen at the house and gardens.
Chartwell boasted a sizeable art studio teeming with canvases, many of which were unframed and in various stages of completion – today, many of these have been saved for the nation to cherish. The studio was built in the 1930s as a space for Churchill to paint without interruption and soon became his favourite refuge as whenever he was not outdoors he was in the studio painting. It is said that the studio proved to be a blessing for Churchill’s wife Clementine as it stopped him dripping paint on the carpets in the main house and offered an area for his art materials. Churchill’s paintings included many recognisable landscapes from Chartwell itself as well as landscapes which Churchill worked on during his travels to parts of Egypt, Marrakech and Paris. Churchill summed-up his passion for painting best when he once said: “When I get to Heaven I mean to spend a considerable portion of my first million years in painting.”
Churchill commissioned the architect Philip Tilden to help turn Chartwell into a home – modernising the originally rather gloomy Victorian mansion, adding a garden wing of three large reception rooms. So much work was undertaken that it was not until April 1924 that Churchill, who was Chancellor of the Exchequer for his first five years at Chartwell, could COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY spend his first night in the property. The early years at Chartwell were followed by what 24

of water needed to fill it and from a chemist on the correct chemicals to keep it clean. A tennis court for Clementine Churchill was transformed after the Second World War to allow croquet to be played over it - Churchill only played the lawn-based game occasionally. When he did play, his opponents said of his action: “He used to wield the croquet mallet single-handed like the polo stick with which he had become expert as a young man.”
The grounds at Chartwell, with its wide-open views across lakes, lawns and the wider Weald of Kent, made the gardens a feast for the eyes, whatever the season and whatever the weather. The lakes were one of the reasons Churchill bought Chartwell; he viewed them as offering huge potential for a water feature he could create and he set to work on them soon after moving in. A lower lake existed when he bought the property but in 1924 an upper lake was created - the lakes were camouflaged by brushwood to reduce the risk of bombing raids during the Second World War. The lakes offered another fascinating feature to the gardens and nothing was more fascinating than the rock garden – this feature caught Clementine Churchill’s eye at the Chelsea Flower Show in 1948. So taken was she by the garden on display at the annual horticultural show that the designer behind the project installation, Gavin Jones, gave it to her as a gift and she only paid for its transport to Chartwell. Besides painting, swimming was another one of Churchill’s many pastimes; he constructed his very own oval heated pool within the grounds during the 1930s with his usual thoroughness. Churchill took the advice from his scientist friend Frederick Lindemann, 1st Viscount Cherwell, on the amount

The National Trust acquired Chartwell in 1946 from a group of businessmen who had purchased it from Churchill for £50,000, as he was finding the upkeep of the house and gardens very expensive. The house and gardens were given to the National Trust on the condition that the Churchills could continue to live there for as long as they wished and they did for almost 20 years after this deal. Sir Winston Churchill left Chartwell in October 1964 in poor health, moving to his London flat in Hyde Park Gate - he celebrated his 90th birthday on November 30, 1964, and died on January 24, 1965. Perhaps the greatest orator, statesman and Briton of his day, or any other day for that matter, he was a renowned writer, historian, artist and sometime bricklayer and remains a towering figure. Lady Clementine Churchill left Chartwell in June 1965 to live in London. The house and gardens opened to the public in the summer of 1966 offering a glimpse into the Churchill family life. It was decided to show the house as it was in the 1930s, the era when Winston, Clementine and their four children were all in residence and Churchill spoke out in favour of rearmament. The garden suffered damage in the great storm of 1987 but, after restoration, today the house, a home to a Prime Minister, remains a popular tourist attraction in the South East of England.

Bluebell Railway ‘Meet & Greet’ service we view our town every day but to visitors of East Grinstead it is an interesting, historical place with lots to see within the beautiful area in which we live. This service gives a great boost to the town's profile within the greater population area and also to day tourists who come from afar who suddenly find out they've arrived at a place full of its own captivating history! The Bluebell Railway has definitely made East Grinstead station a far more popular destination stop. it is also of course the gateway to Pooh Country. A 'Meet & Greet' service is running at the town’s stations on Saturday mornings to encourage day trippers to visit our fabulous town. It operates in a similar way to that used at the London Olympics, with the aim of making visitors feel welcome in East Grinstead and encouraging them to take the short walk into town. The volunteers have free rein on the EG and EG/Bluebell stations and can even go into the carriages to hand out leaflets and answer visitor questions.
The Meet & Greet service are currently looking for volunteers. If you are interested in joining the team, even if you can only put in a little time, please contact stuart. scholes@egba. co.uk to find out more information or call East Grinstead Living on 01342 300152.

Summer Facts 1.
The word “summer” is from the Proto-Indo-European root sem-, which means “together/one”. (Such a wonderful meaning and a fabulous concept to try to follow this season!)
2.
In the summer heat, the iron of the Eiffel Tower expands, making the tower grow more than 6 inches.
3.
Ice lollies, a popular summer treat, were accidentally invented by an 11-year-old boy in San Francisco in 1905. He left a glass of soft drink sitting outside and by the next morning it had frozen. He began selling them at an amusement park in New Jersey and it took off from there.
4.
Another popular summer treat is watermelon which is part of the cucumber, pumpkin and squash family and consists of 92% water!
5.
10 years ago in 2006 it was the warmest summer to date in the UK with average daytime temperatures of 15.8°C.
6.
The coldest summer was in 1922, when average daytime temperatures for June, July and August were 12.3°C!
7.
The sunniest summer on record was in1976, when there were 669 hours of bright sunshine.
Fingers crossed for the best summer yet.

WINNIE THE POOH RULES WInnie the Pooh is of course Ashdown Forest’s favourite son. Finding Winnie is the astounding real-life story of the bear “Winnie”. Before there was Winnie-thePooh, there was a real bear named Winnie and in 1914, Harry Colebourn, a vet on his way to tend horses in World War I, followed his heart and rescued this baby bear. He named her Winnie, and he took her to war. Harry Colebourn’s real-life greatgranddaughter tells the true story of a remarkable friendship and an even more remarkable journey - from the fields of Canada to an army base in England. And finally to London Zoo, where Winnie made another new friend, a boy named Christopher Robin. Written by Harry Colebourn’s great-grandaughter Lindsay Mattick, this is a beautiful and touching book with original documents. It was released at the end of last year and has recently won the 2016 Caldecott Medal which annually recognises the most distinguished American picture book for children. So we are very lucky to be able to bring you a Q&A with author Lindsay Mattick about her book:
the moment I found out I was pregnant. All of the sudden the notion that ‘one day’ I would need to share this gem of a family story became much more immediate and real. The truth is, I wrote the dedication of Finding Winnie to my son long before I wrote the story.
beloved fictional story has a real and equally beautiful true story behind it. I have always felt grateful to have this history as a part of my heritage – and to have the first-hand knowledge that one simple act love can have incredible consequences, even a century later.
You are uniquely poised to tell this particular story, can you explain why?
The story of Finding Winnie is based on true events. Why choose a picture book as the genre to convey such a rich history?
When I was kid I used to joke that Harry was my great grandfather and Winnie was my ‘Great Grand Bear’. It has always been remarkable to me that such a
Your book, Finding Winnie: The True Story of the World’s Most Famous Bear, delves into the real story behind the lovable character that many children and adults alike know as Winnie-the-Pooh. Why did you feel it was the right time to tell this story? I always wanted to tell my family story as a picture book but the sense of urgency came 32
I always imagined telling my own child this amazing family story through a picture book. While this is a historical and true story, it’s also a very magical story that captures people’s imaginations. A picture book allows the emotions of the narrative to come through more than just the facts. Sophie (Blackall) has brought it to life with her inventive and warm style – I am incredibly grateful. Finding Winnie can be bought in Pooh Corner as well as other good local bookshops. Living

July Reminders for your Garden As you look out the window or wander down your garden path, your garden should be a picture of beauty, the summer perennials will be in full bloom, the bedding plants flowering at their very best, a complete riot of colour! If this isn’t the case in your patch then quite simply – try harder next year… To prolong the roses’ flowering season prune them now after they have flowered (unless the rose produces hips). Go back down the stem about 10cm to the next healthy looking leaf; this encourages the new growth and you get a worthwhile second display. It’s also a good time to feed them after the first flush of flowering, a general purpose feed, and best to water it in and it will encourage an abundance of new blooms. Certain hedges and shrubs should be pruned this month. Privet and Lonicera nitida should be cut and shaped as required. Philadelphus should be pruned to stop lots of unwanted straggly growth. Follow a flowering stem back to a side shoot that doesn’t have the remains of flower heads at its tip and cut just above it. Do this throughout the shrub; it will tidy it up and give a good display of flowers for the following year.
shady spot and leave them on saucers – a good drink before you go will help them. Mow the lawn before you go, they are pretty robust and even if it does dry out a bit it will soon recover on your return. So happy holidays, happy gardening… Clare Parkinson Horticultural Manager and Garden Designer Imberhorne Lane Nursery
Wisteria should also be tackled this month. You will already have trained the main stems up the wall in the framework you are wanting to create. Now, cut back all the long, wispy tendrils to 15cm long. This encourages fewer leaves and more flowers. If the main stems are venturing beyond their limit cut them back too. Should the plant put a lot more growth on over the summer then repeat this process in winter. Perennials such as lupins and delphiniums can be cut back once they’ve finished flowering. Brunnera and pulmonaria can also be cut back. Generally anything not looking its best can be cut back leaving room for all the plants still to show off. COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY If you’re going on holiday then think about how the garden will be watered. If you don’t have a friend who can pop in then move your pots to a more
