Testimonial: “I just wanted to say thank you both so much for doing such a brilliant job—and for coming out so quickly to do it. I still can’t believe it’s done—I am eternally grateful and if anyone else needs some work done you guys will be at the top of the list. Fantastic—thank you again.” Louize Mason-Styrron “We have employed Allzones Roofing over the past 5 years, in this time they have re-tiled a large house built in 1916 including dormers and gables. Re-tiled a cottage roof using new tiles on one side and re using the old tiles on the other side. Removed felt from a roof on a large studio and replaced with fibre cement based tiles. Recently re-tiled a bungalow with shingle tiles (wood). All the work has been carried out with efficiency and excellent workmanship throughout. I would recommend this company.” Peredur Art Centre

Welcome LEO the Long-Eared Owl Chick Leo hatched out a few weeks ago and is the first long-eared owl bred at local British Wildlife Centre (A22, nr Lingfield). Keeper Meg was chosen to be his mum and she’s been handrearing him since. They’re now inseparable as he took to Meg immediately; he’s being very brave and has done a wonderful job getting acclimatised to staff and visitors alike and even large groups of excited school children! The perfect candidate to inspire and educate people about this beautiful but secretive owl species, he’s taking it all in his stride and will even be considered for the owl flying display team. Wishing Leo all the best on his journey. www.britishwildlifecentre.co.uk

June is the month of Father’s Day Fathers Day Gift idea: Daddy-Rules Vouchers Guaranteed to put a smile on any dad’s face, here are some voucher ideas. • A couple of hours of being in complete charge of the remote control with carte blanche choices and with no other family members being able to comment or moan at all ;) • A 1/2 hour back massage • Polish shoes, Iron shirt, Press trousers • An evening of cups of tea/coffee made on request, with snacks • Playing his own choice of music in the living room/dining room/kitchen as loud as he likes for at least 1/2 hour • Finally... no backchat from any family members for at least 1/2 hour (on second

thoughts this might be too tricky) • Another popular choice: make ‘tie’ cookies. A tie cuter is very cheap and they’ll appreciate the fun idea.

Townscape Exhibition 2016 Reframing Local History etc. their chosen object. Curators were on hand throughout to answer questions about the collection, so that the story behind each chosen artifact could be explained. Jessica Hadfield at the museum had this to say about the project: “I am delighted to have worked with Example on this project to find new ways to use and interpret the museum’s varied collections. It has provided us with a valuable opportunity to revisit and find new meaning in our collections. Each item the artist has worked with as part of this project will be displayed as part of Townscape 2016 giving us a wonderful opportunity to showcase the item and interpret it in a new light by means of the artist’s response to it.” Here’s a couple of artist statements for the exhibition: Healing Hands

Local art group, ‘Example Artists’ and students from Imberhorne and Sackville came together at the East Grinstead museum earlier on in the year to create pieces of artwork that are currently on display at the museum and the library throughout the summer. The artists and students had all been all invited to respond to the museum collection in order to finally produce this exhibition of contemporary artwork that reflects an artifact of significance to our town. A ‘Night at the Museum’ was arranged and provided a platform for them all to come together and sketch,

This series of work began when artist Hannah Buckley studied a collection of drawings at the museum. Red Cross nurse Mollie Lentaigne worked at the Queen Victoria Hospital, as a medical artist, with Archibald McIndoe and other plastic surgeons, illustrating the surgical procedures they carried out. Although McIndoe was most famous for innovations in facial plastic surgery, Buckley was drawn to the medical illustrations of pilots’ hands, repaired after sustaining burns or frost-bite. Buckley’s work explores a fictitious sequence of events; from an initial tragedy to eventual recuperation. Implied in the

work is the relationship between patient and surgeon. Stitched Up This body of work is inspired by the cross-stitch sampler on display at the museum, sewn by a ten year old girl from Baldwins Hill School in 1878. Exploring the project, artist Sheri Gee became interested in the seeming loss of these traditional needlecraft skills amongst school children today, despite cross-stitch’s current renaissance, with many young designers creating avant-garde patterns, often referencing modern culture. The figure of a girl working on a cross-stitch design, a current student of Baldwins Hill School, forms the basis of this project, in an attempt to link the past with the present. The paintings weave threads between contemporary art and traditional needlecraft, some pieces employing crossstitch together with oil painting. For more information see www.exampleart.co.uk.

The Day Sussex Died Local History Notes by Dorothy Hatswell of the East Grinstead Museum Everyone remembers The Somme. It was one of the longest and most bitter campaigns of the First World War. It started on July 1st 1916 and over 20,000 men lost their lives on that one day alone. The horrors of that day and the ensuing months were probably the reason that the tragic event which had happened on the previous day were forgotten by all, except those who had taken part. June 30th saw the 11th, 12th and 13th Battallions of the Royal Sussex Regiment, often called the Southdown Battalion, or Lowther’s Lambs, after the local MP who had inspired many of them to enlist, in a small town, Richebourg. Richebourg in the Pas de Calais lies between Bethune and Armentiers. The latter being made famous in the well known wartime song, as the home of a certain “Madamoiselle”! It was also only thirty miles south of the Somme. There had been sporadic fighting in the area since the beginning of the war, but now with only a limited time to prepare the Royal Sussex regiments were being asked to make a diversionary strike against the German army. They set up their positions at Boars Head, their name for a local vantage point. The idea was to fool the Germans into thinking that this was where the next big Allied offensive would come and so, draw troops from the Somme, the real focus of their attack. The men awoke at three am and the battle started two hours later, when day dawned. The men went over the top into a heavy fire from the German army. They were heavily outnumbered and ill-prepared. After only five hours the British were defeated. Three hundred and sixty six men were dead, and a thousand more either wounded or taken prisoner. There is a vivid account of the battle in the diary of the regiment. It is not clear how many men took part in the battle. Battalions can consist of anywhere between three hundred and eight hundred men. Assuming the maximum of two thousand four hundred men were present, more than 50% were affected. In reality their numbers were probably not that great. The fact that the majority of the men who took part were from the Sussex coastal towns of Brighton, Eastbourne and Hastings bore the brunt of the casualties. This meant that no-one from the East 10

Grinstead area was involved in the particular battle. However Edward Godfrey Martin died on May 9th 1915 at Richebourg. His battalion, was the 2nd Battalion which took part in one of the many skirmishes in the area since the beginning of the war. Martin was a regular soldier who had been born in East Grinstead in 1876. He was twenty five at the time of his death and his effects of £2 2s 1d and his gratuity were left to his siblings: George, Charles, William, Annie and Mary. Three of his siblings: Charles, Annie and Mary appear on the 1881 census as the offspring of Charles and Sarah Martin of 40, London Road, East Grinstead (it is uncertain why the other siblings and Edward himself were not listed in this particular census).

Local History Notes continued he chose was Boars Hill. As one of the survivors among the war poets, he was haunted all his life. In his poem “Can You Remember?” he wrote: Yes, I still still remember The whole thing in a way Edge and exactitude Depend on the day ….

One of the officers in command of the 2nd Battalion during the battle was Edmund Blunden, the war poet. He was born in London but moved to Yalding, Kent, soon afterwards. He was the eldest of the nine children of Charles and Georgina who were both school teachers. The family moved to Framfield, in Sussex a few years later and Edmund won a scholarship to Christ’s Hospital in Horsham, where he appears on 1911 census as a 14 year-old schoolboy. Blunden was commissioned in August 1915 and served throughout in the Somme region. He was awarded the Military Medal and survived a gas attack in 1917. After the war he went to live in Oxford to be near his fellow poet, John Masefield and Robert Graves. Ironically, the name of the area

Though commonly I fail to name That once obvious Hill And where we went and whence we came To be killed or kill …. Of which, at the instance Of sound, smell, change and stir New-old shapes for ever Intensely recur. The “Hill” referred to is possibly Boars Head, although it might be anywhere in the area of the Somme. It does, however, show how the war lingered on in Blunden’s mind, long after the war was over, this poem was written in 1936. He once said that “surviving the war was the easy part.”

2z i Feast Grinstead 9v c z m ] 6 y p4 Aren’t we all foodies now? And as such, what a perfect time for a new festival to be brought to our town. Prepare your taste buds because East Grinstead will have its first food and wine festival starting with a one day event at East Court on Sunday 2nd October. Italia in Piazza will bring a taste of Italy with a variety of stalls. The Meridian Hall will host a wine festival where several distributors and local producers will talk knowledgeably about their wines, with tastings and discussions (and no obligation to buy). There will be a small charge for entry to the wine element of the day, part of which will go to the Mayor’s charity, but the market will be free to enter. More information will be available as the day takes shape as we are hoping there will be a surprise or two. For further information call 01342 410121 or email tourism@eastgrinstead.gov.uk

Handy Cleaning Tips 2. Clean your dishwasher: Place 2 cups of vinegar on the top rack and run through a cycle with nothing else. 3. Want to get rid of bad smells in the bathroom? My friend swears by lighting a match in the bathroom, you might need to do this a couple of times but it works like magic... phew! (match safety applies :) )

Cleaning Tips

4. Want to rid the kitchen of cooking smells after a meal? Put a small saucepan on the hob with a cup or two of water. Add a slice of lemon with a dash of vanilla; or a slice of orange with a teaspoon of cinnamon/nutmeg/ cloves (all or one); or lime and a piece of ginger. Let the mixture boil for a while to leave your kitchen with a lovely smell, but be sure the pan doesn’t run dry!

1. Switch to Microfibre: If you haven’t already you can save yourself alot of elbow grease and less chemicals by using these handy cloths.

Quick Quiz

5. clean the toilet bowl Pour a cupful of bicarb of soda down the sides of your toilet basin, leave it for an hour. Then pour vinegar down the sides and flush. Voila!

A Perfect Spring/Summer Walk: Gravetye Circular This walk is brought to you courtesy of a relatively new tourism initiative which has cemented the Kingcote Valley as being a tourist destination: 2000 acres of beautiful countryside nestled in a valley just south of East Grinstead, centred around the stunning scenery of Weir Wood Reservoir. Part of the High Weald Landscape Trail; enjoy historic houses, lakes, vineyards, enchanting woodland and streams. Explore William Robinson land and take in the views of Gravetye Manor and Kingscote Estate. Victorian English garden author William Robinson previously owned 1000 acres of Kingscote Valley land.

Gravetye Manor was built in 1598 and following William Robinson’s ownership, the gardens are of historical importance. The unique one and a half acre elliptical kitchen garden with 12ft sandstone walls is one of the largest in England.

Visit Kingscote Estate vineyards, award-winning wines in shop and fishing lakes. 15 acres of vines were planted between 2010 and 2013. View the 15th century barn Tithe Barn and 14th century grade II listed medieval hall house (vineyard tours and wine tasting can be pre-booked). Refuel: Gravetye Manor (no dogs allowed) or drive to West Hoathly for The Cat Inn (dogs welcome in bar) and The Fox (dog friendly). Distance: 6km (3.7 miles) with shorter 5km option. Duration: 1.5 - 2 hours. Terrain: includes steep paths. Dog friendly: off lead except for when walking on lanes. Stiles near Birch Farm not suitable for large dogs. OS Explorer Map: 135. Car park: Forestry Commission Vowels Lane (near the lane to Gravetye Manor), nr E. Grinstead. 1. From the car park enter the main footpath, immediately head right, soon after at a path crossroads turn right and then turn left onto the stone path. Take the path off right and then turn left.

June Reminders for your Garden in the autumn, overwinter them in the greenhouse or shed and then bring them on again the following spring.

June is always a very busy month in the garden but the long days and light evenings mean we have so much more time to spend outside. Gardening can be an excellent ‘de-stresser’ so that even after a busy day at work, a few hours pottering in your garden can help you feel relaxed and invigorated. Plus some jobs such as watering are best done in the slightly cooler evening temperatures. Regularly deadhead throughout the border to keep it looking fresh and pull out weeds as you see them. You may have some gaps and these can be filled with summer bedding or plant some canna lilies – these are striking plants with large, almost architectural leaves and an abundance of hot summer colour flowers. They are not hardy plants so the best action is to lift them

Roses are the stars of the show this month and a little attention will pay dividends in the blooms display. Regular deadheading will encourage new buds – cut back to the next outward facing shoot, this keeps a nice open shrub. If you are training roses up a wall or pergola then you need to tie in new shoots and prune out unwanted ones regularly to achieve your desired effect. Tubs, hanging baskets, patio pots will all start to grow quickly and look fabulous this month. A regular feed will encourage plenty of flowers and don’t forget to keep on top of the watering. Petunias and geraniums in particular should be deadheaded regularly. If you want your pots and baskets to be useful rather than just pretty (or you may have limited space) then consider planting them up with herbs, tomatoes and/or strawberries. There are plenty of varieties available for this purpose.

If you leave this too late you are cutting away the stems on which the new buds are forming in readiness for the following spring. Camellias and Rhododendrons should have their dead flower heads carefully removed. You should be giving them a liquid feed every two weeks (one rich in iron) to keep them green and healthy and encourage good bud growth ready for the following spring. So here’s to a flaming June – enjoy your garden… Clare Parkinson Horticultural Manager and Garden Designer Imberhorne Lane Nursery

Spring flowering shrubs should all be trimmed back or pruned by the early part of the month.

Perfect for “Strawberry Month” Delicious desert for a summer meal and surprisingly easy to make

Strawberries and Madeira cake with Dark Chocolate Cremeux By Andrew Wilson, Exec Head Chef at Ashdown Park Hotel & Country Club

Madeira cake

Method

Ingredients

Using the same method as for the ice cream, warm the milk and cream together and whisk the egg yolks and sugar in a separate bowl.

175g unsalted butter 175g caster sugar 3 medium eggs 250g self-raising flour 3 tbsp milk Zest of 1 lemon

Pour the milk and cream over the eggs and sugar and whisk to combine. Transfer the mixture back into the saucepan, then warm slowly to 86°C – you’ll need a sugar thermometer for this. Let the mixture cool to 50°C then add the melted chocolate.

Method Beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Slowly add the eggs one at a time, beating until well mixed. Sieve and fold in the flour, followed by the lemon zest and milk and combine well. Pour into a greased and lined 8” round baking tin and bake at 180°C/160°C fan/gas mark 4 for 20-25 minutes until risen and golden.

Strawberry ice cream: Ingredients 500g strawberry puree 500ml whole milk 210ml double cream 12 egg yolks 100g caster sugar Method Warm the milk and cream in a medium sized saucepan the in a separate bowl whisk together the egg yolks and caster sugar.

24

Whisk the mixture together then leave to cool. Pour the milk and cream over the eggs and sugar and whisk to combine. Pour the mixture back into the saucepan and heat over a low temperature, stirring continuously until a thick custard is formed. Remove from the heat, pass through a fine sieve and leave to cool. When the custard is cold, add the strawberry puree and transfer into an ice cream machine to churn, according to your machine’s settings.

To serve the dish, cut the madeira cake into cubes and arrange on a plate with a scoop of the ice cream, piped or spooned dots of the chocolate cremeux and diced, perfectly sweet, fresh British strawberries. If you want to get creative, you can make a chocolate bowl by melting white chocolate to coat the inside of a half-sphere shaped mould, which after it’s set can hold the strawberries, madeira cake and chocolate cremeux.

Meringue: Ingredients HOTEL AND COUNTRY CLUB

250ml whipping cream 250ml whole milk 100g egg yolks (approximately 5 eggs) 50g sugar 250g 70% dark chocolate, melted

Something to remember us by Guinea Pig member Sandy Saunders was a young trainee glider pilot whose life almost ended when the Tiger Moth aircraft he was practicing in crashed and burst into a fireball which ravaged his legs, hands and face. With 40 per cent burns on his body, his military career was over and he started his own private battle to get his life back. Luckily for him, Sandy found himself in the Queen Vic in the capable hands of pioneering plastic surgeon Sir Archibald McIndoe. After a couple of years and 28 largely experimental operations he could lead a virtually normal life and like so many others was grateful to McIndoe who rehabilated not only their bodies, but their minds. Sandy was so inspired by what he had witnessed as a patient, he trained to be doctor and worked as a GP for 40 years. Now at the age of 93, he’s determined to honour his fellow Guinea Pig Club members (of which there were 649 by the close of WW2) with a beautiful tablet at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. Sandy said, ‘I am familiar with the NMA and love it’s ethos. A lovely place for remembering organisations which support the Armed Forces in general and individual sections of Armed Forces’ history’. ‘Future generations should have the opportunity to realise how a group of seriously injured servicemen were able, with adequate medical help and financial support, to achieve their optimum potential, physical and psychological, and organise themselves to form a lifelong support system and enjoy a meaningful life’.

In one sense this will be a sister memorial to East Grinstead’s McIndoe Statue (memorial) in front of Sackville College. We asked Sandy how his memorial will relate to East Grinstead, ‘The charitable support of East Grinstead was fundamental in the restoration of social ease and self confidence. The memorial will have a QR code which will give the 649 names, the history of the club and point people towards East Grinstead which will increase footfall to the town, to the museum and help tourism in the area’. The last meeting of the Guinea Pig Club was last month and there are only 18 guinea pigs left, so Sandy felt it was only fair and right that there should be a permanent memorial to this wonderful club. Despite fighting terminal cancer, Sandy has earmarked more than £20,000 for the memorial and is seeking crowd funding and donations to help out. His last ambition is to have this beautiful tablet in place by November this year. A stonemason is working on it right now and everything is going to plan, Sandy put aside £20,000 but then he was told he would have to pay VAT on top, so he is having to find more money. Finally we asked Sandy what could be learned from the experiences of the Guinea Pig Club? ‘The support of cheerful companions helps to generate tolerance and endurance. Surmounting a harrowing ordeal encourages strength of character’. If you would like to donate visit Sandy’s Crowdfunding page at crowdfunding.justgiving. com/sandyandmaggie-saunders

All for our PAPAs Fathers Day: another American gift to the world which was disseminated across the world much as Mothers Day has. The first inklings of such a day occurred, most likely, as the result of the success of Mothers Day which had been established by Anna Jarvis of Grafton, West Virginia. Just 15 miles from there, in Fairmont, West Virginia, Grace Golden Clayton was mourning the loss of her father when, on December 1907, the nearby Monongah Mining Disaster occurred killing 361 men (250 of them fathers). Clayton suggested to her pastor that all those fathers should be honoured in a ceremony; so on the 5th 1908 the first observance of a “Father’s Day” was held. The establishment of an actual Father’s Day never really got off the ground however (there was no internet and nothing went ‘viral’ in 5 minutes as it does now!). Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd was the lady who really gave it life, to make fathers day materialise as we know it today. She lived in Spokane, Washington at the YMCA. Her own father was a civil war vet, William Jackson Smart, who single-handedly raised his six children. Clearly he must have done a fabulous job as a father because, after hearing the sermons on Mothers Day services over the years, Sonora decided her father and all fathers deserved to be honoured too. June 19, 1910 was chosen as the day and June has been associated with Fathers Day in almost every country across the world since.

The first American president to support the concept was president Calvin Coolidge, who did so in 1924; but it wasn’t until in the year 1966 that president Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation that resulted in the declaration of the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day. And of course the international community has fully embraced this day and given it our own quirks. Funnily enough though, the date of the day is pretty much the same across the boards which makes June the month for fathers the world over. Did you know that traditionally fathers should be given the gift of white or red rose as the rose is the official flower for Father’s Day? And wearing a red rose signifies a living father, while a white one represents a deceased father. The most popular Father’s Day present is apparently a tie but I rather think they might just prefer to have complete and unconditional control of the remote control for once and copious cups of tea/coffee/beer on hand and generally be waited on like kings....time to plan.

Sudoku

© Kevin Stone [www.brainbashers.com]

In the 1920s, Dodd stopped promoting the celebration because she left to study art, the day faded into uncertain obscurity, even in her home town of Spokane. When she returned in the 1930s and started promoting the celebration again, she was able raise awareness at a national level. This was also because as soon as commercialism sniffed a winner with Fathers Day, it really took off - nothing like some good ol’ promotion to keep the wheels turning; the manufacturers of ties, tobacco pipes, and any traditional present to fathers all got on board. Unlike Mother’s Day, Father’s Day promotion was originally met with laughter. It was the target of much satire, parody and derision with a local newspaper complaining that it would lead to mindless promotions such as “National Clean Your Desk Day”. 28

Carnival is Coming

On the 3rd of July the town will host its first official carnival in over 20 years! How did this happen? Councillor Norman Mockford told us, ‘ It came about from a group of friends discussing “the good old days!” So Rex Whittaker and myself decided to make it happen’.

Norman said, ‘we hope this will become an annual event which will grow – year on year. And that this will bring the whole community together, for a day of nostalgic fun and excitement’. Visit www.eastgrinsteadcarnival.simplesite.com for more information.

There’s much revelry to look forward to as well as copious amounts of sequins and glitter. Floats will be ‘floating’ down Railway Approach from noon and make their way through London Rd. and the High street, through to East Court where a big party awaits with festivities carrying on late into the afternoon. There’ll be the fire brigade, vintage buses, vintage cars, floats from schools, businesses and Weir Wood Sailing Club with more to come. Of course the carnival queen will be making her regal appearance and hopefully we’ll even see a brazilian dancer (or two). Local resident Richard Leman will also make an appearance with his Olympic Gold medal and Olympic torch! East Court Live ‘The Carnival Show’ will continue the party atmosphere and kick offs as the parade enters East Court. With a host of performers lined up, you’re guaranteed an afternoon of fabulous entertainment from EG favourites The Tar Babies, Sackville School Samba Band, a stunt team from Deers Leap Bikes, the EG Rock Choir and the fabulous Rogue Minogue - a tribute to Kylie in full show girl routine. There will also be a good choice of food/drink stalls.

The word on Windows 10 Maturity is a wonderful thing. From cheese to political leaders, we value maturity. Between its free upgrade period ending in late July and its already boasting 300 million users, is Windows 10 mature enough for your computer? This is the question I am asked after every brush with Microsoft’s enthusiastic upgrade appeals. Should you move with the times? There certainly are some good features in Windows 10. The most obvious is the welcome return of the start menu which was kidnapped from Windows 8 only to be restored now with some lovely extras. Then there are improvements to working with mobile phones, searching for files and information and even to the start up performance. The list of improvements continues but rapidly makes for rather dull reading. The real question is are you going to find it simple to use, perhaps even enjoyable, or will it blight your digital life? If you are shifting your old computer to Windows 10 then here is my advice: double-check its compatibility using the links on my website to your computer’s manufacturer and make a backup. While

drastic incompatibility is rare this is cold comfort when your motherboard is damaged beyond repair. As the rate of concerned calls falls I presume that the upgrade process is becoming smoother. While Windows 10 will remain a work in progress, numerous major issues have been resolved. The controversial WifiSense that could compromise your wifi network is vanishing. Life in Windows 10 seems pretty good. On the downside, ‘free’ Windows 10 is being used by Microsoft as a cash producer by other means. Whether upgrading or using a fresh computer, take a look at the personal information settings to limit Microsoft’s use of your data. And anticipate advertising such as the announcement this week to double the number of advertisements on the start menu. So when is the best time to upgrade? How about the week of 20 July to allow Microsoft to do some last minute ironing. By Roger Lyons of RL Computer Solutions, see ad on page 4.
