Brief

Concept

Audience

We would like you to design a desk calendar for Fedrigoni customers to promote our Woodstock paper range. Woodstock is an uncoated pulp coloured collection of papers and boards. A unique paper range made from 80% recycled pre-consumer waste and 20% FSC certified Virgin fibre. Available in seven different weights with 15 wonderfully warm pastel colours and an additional mottled version, the naturalness and simplicity of wood is clearly identifiable with this range of paper. In order to grab a presence on our customers’ desks, the calendar will need to be genuinely useful, but also speak in a visual way which appeals to their high aesthetic standards. It should therefore be a creative, yet functional, piece which maintains awareness of the range throughout the year.

The Colours of the Year desk calendar is a daily calendar that will showcase the Woodstock Paper Range. By using paper stock in a creative way it will display a bold range of colour which represents each month within the year. The compact calendar will fit on any sized desk and brighten up the work space. Within the calendar deatails of each stock will be displayed on the back of each day, raising awareness of the properties of each stock available. With the ability to use the calendar as a stock swatch and note taker, this will be more than just a calendar. It will provide the user with many uses, making it more likely for them to keep the product.

The calendar will be for the attention of graphic designers and those with a keen interest in fine special papers.

Background Information

Purpose

Deliverables

The Fedrigoni family has been part of the paper world since 1717, when the San Colombano paper mill was set up in VallarsaRovereto, Italy. Over the years, Fedrigoni have consistently been at the forefront of the paper industry, pioneering the techniques and processes that make paper the beautiful, versatile medium it is. Fedrigoni has been refining the art and science of making finequality special papers, producing striking surfaces, tactile textures and vivid colours - paper that can be pressed, bent, cut and folded into almost any form you can imagine. Fedrigoni papers are ultra-functional and, at the same time, wonderfully expressive.

The purpose of the brief is to design a 2015 desk calendar for Fedrigoni customers that promotes the Woodstock paper range.

Tone of Voice The calendar will need to be genuinely useful, but also speak in a visual way which appeals to their high aesthetic standards. It should therefore be a creative, yet functional, piece which maintains awareness of the range throughout the year.

As the brief is very craft orientated is it something that I am very interested in within my own practice. Experimenting within this brief will challenge my own practice and develop the skills I use on a daily basis.

Research In essence the purpose of the Fedrigoni, Colours of the Year desk calendar is to promote the Woodstock Paper range. The calendar works on the idea of representing each month of the year with a colour, which is matched to a stock within the Woodstock range. The finished outcome showcases the year in a range of colours and displays papers available within the Woodstock range. In order to achieve this I have looked at some existing products that are focussed around the idea of using colour, paper craft and interaction within the product.

Development of calendar From looking at the research and getting some general ideas for the format of the physical calendar, I have started to develop the design and production of the calendar. Thinking about the practical uses of the calendar and where it will be be placed in the environment, it needs to be of a size which will accomdate this and be of use to the target audience. I have developed some ideas to work alongside the actual calendar, incorporating the idea of the calendar being a stock swatch and note taker, brings additional uses to the calendar and ones that will be useful to the user.

Development of packaging The product will either be posted or handed out to clients of the company. Therefore packaging is needed for the product to protect it from being damaged. Looking at the product and taking into account the idea of using the stock colours to represent the months of the year, I developed the packaging from a full enclosed box to a wrap around package, so that this element of the product will be seen all the time, as it is the main concept and eye catching element of the product.

Calendar Design The size and format has been carefully thought through so that the 2015 desk calendar can fit on any sized desk, but it also means it can be carried or posted easily. The overall size of the calendar is A6 and each peice of the calendar is perforated along the bottom in order to rip away the days. With a simple but bold design each day of the calendar stands out and will be clearly visable to the user wherever it is placed on their desk. The calendar has been designed in black as it will be printed onto the coloured stock from each paper range - this will bring colour to the product. The design leaves alot of space within each day, meaning the user can write things that are happening on that day within the calendar itself.

The Calendar The design of the calendar is kept minimal so the stock stands out. This was also the main factor of why the calendar is daily, as it creates a block of colour which displays the papers. This enables the product to have a stong presence when sat on a table. Along with the product being a daily calendar, it informs the user of the stock details which are presented on the reverse and it also has lots of room within the design to be a note taker. The photography of the product was important to the success of the calendar. Photographing it in context shows the relevance of the product to the target audience and it puts it into perspective in relation to the size, format and colour of the calendar.

How the Calendar works The Fedrigoni calendar has been designed as a daily calendar, in order for this to work efficiently for the user, each day needs to be able to be detached from the calendar block. To achieve this each piece of stock has been perforated along the bottom, this means that the user can simply rip off each day as it goes along and reveal the next. If the user likes the stock of a particular month, information about it, is displayed on the reverse of each day when they rip it off. When this is flipped over it turns into a stock swatch. The idea of having the calendar designed like this creates an element of interactivity within the product and brings the user into the design of the calendar. With the user having to rip off each of the days, they are interacting with the stock and getting to touch and feel the qualities of the paper range. This is the best way to showcase the stock and its properties.

The Note Taker Not only is this product a calendar and a showcase of the paper range, it can also double up as a note taker. As the calendar is designed to A6 format, this is a good size to write down short notes or reminders for the user. Using the the reverse side of each day within the calendar as a post it note, it creates a secondary function for the product and one that it very useful for the target audience.

Packaging of the Calendar With a focus to showcase the Woodstock paper range, the packaging of the product needed to be something that didnt hinder or hide this element. By creating a minimal wrap around packaging, the product is protected from any damage, but still shows the range of stock used within the product. This range of colour seen down the sides of the packaging draws your eye straight to the product, as it is a bold statement of colour. The packaging displays the product name on the front and Fedrigoni contact details on the back. On the top of the packaging ‘2015’ has been die cut out, this is to represent the idea that the colours of the calendar make up the year of 2015. The packaging harnesses the idea behind the calendar and shows the true meaning of what the purpose of this product is - the ability to showcase the Woodstock paper range and how it can be used in a creative but functional product.
