The Typographic Circle

The committee

The Typographic Circle was formed in 1976 to bring together anyone with an interest in type and typography.

Chairman Alan Dye

We are a not-for-profit organisation run entirely by volunteers. We stage a variety of type and typography related events including a series of diverse monthly lectures by well-known industry speakers, and the annual New York Type Directors Club exhibition. Previous speakers have included Trevor Beattie, Stefan Sagmeister, Ken Garland, Jonathan Barnbrook, Fred Flade, MadeThought, NB Studio, Anthony Burrill, Rick Poyner, Sir John Hegarty... the list goes on. Besides being serious about type, we’re a very sociable organisation with a reputation for staging enjoyable events. We try hard not to come across as being stuffy or elitist. Membership is open to anyone with an interest in type and typography, and there are no entry tests or examinations.

Anthony Burrill

Anthony Burrill About

Jonathan Barnbrook

Graphic artist, print-maker and designer Anthony Burrill is known for his persuasive, up-beat style of communication. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, New York and has been exhibited in galleries around the world including The Barbican, The Walker Art Centre and The Graphic Design Museum, Breda. In 2012, he made his first foray into curating with the exhibition Made in L.A. - Work by Colby Poster Printing, at KK Outlet in London.

Made Thought

Words and language are an important part of Burrill’s output and he has developed a distinctive voice that is sought after not only by collectors of his posters and prints but also by clients including Wallpaper* magazine, The Economist, The British Council, London Underground and The Design Museum. Burrill is perhaps best known for his typographic, text-based compositions, including the now-famous “Work Hard and Be Nice to People”, which has become a mantra for the design community and beyond. While Burrill’s work is grounded in a serious devotion to his art, he has a lightness of touch and humour that, although often copied, is unique in the field of graphic communication. He frequently embarks on innovative collaborations with friends and fellow creatives. Recent and regular colluders include product designer Michael Marriott, writer and philosopher Alain de Botton, designer Ben Kelly and creative director Erik Kessels. Installations, events and work in three dimensions punctuate Burrill’s practice. At the renowned annual graphic art fair Pick Me Up at Somerset House in London in 2011, Burrill re-located his studio to the gallery and held workshops and daily collaborations with fellow designers, illustrators, photographers and musicians over the course of ten days. For Graphic Design Worlds at the Triennale di Milano in 2011 Burrill and Michael Marriott built and installed a red-timbered chalet structure, clad with recreations of Burrill’s work cut from multi-veneer board.

The Typocircle Exhibition is an extension to the Live Talks, here we want to showcase the speakers own work and show you what they do in their own practice. As the Typographic Circle is based around type and typography, this will be the focus of the exhibition.

Using the space within the Town Hall as the centre stage, we will hang all the speakers work in an interesting manor to create an unforgettable exhibition. Alongside the speakers - Anthony Burrill, Jonathan Barnbrook and Made Thought, there will be other local Manchester based studios involved within the exhibition. The likes of Music, Fieldwork, Modern Designers and Design by Day, plus many more will be joining the exhibition and showcasing what they have to offer.

Typocircle Number Three.

Guest Speakers:

Typocircle Number Three is our next event in the series of annual events we hold. The name ‘Number Three’ came from the idea that everything is based around 3 things - three designers, three exhibitions, three days long.

Anthony Burrill Jonathan Barnbrook Made Thought

The Talks This year, the speakers at Typocircle will discuss longevity. A simple, open and inspiring theme, celebrating the importance of creativity in society in what can be challenging economic times. Speakers will discuss sustainable design and its importance to our economic and environmental future; how to keep design fresh, new and creative in an ever-evolving world; and why print will never die.

Jonathan Barnbrook

Anthony Burrill About

Jonathan Barnbrook

Jonathan Barnbrook is one of the UK’s most active graphic designers. Pioneering the notion of graphic design with a social conscience, Barnbrook makes strong statements about corporate culture, consumerism, war and international politics. Working in both commercial and non-commercial spheres, Barnbrook combines originality, wit, political savvy and bitter irony in equal measures.

Made Thought

Founding his studio in 1990 and Virus Foundry in 1997, Barnbrook is perhaps best known for his provocatively named fonts, such as Mason (originally released as Manson), Exocet, Bastard, Prozac, Nixon and Drone. The controversy surrounding this work stems from its subversive nature and strong social commentary. Barnbrook multi layers meaning and style – working with language and letterforms in an ingenious way. He uses advertising to reveal anti-corporate messages and exhibitions to promote non-commercial work. With an international presence and local impact, Barnbrook’s work is definitely of the times. Since graduating in graphic design from Saint Martin’s School of Art and the Royal College of Art in London, Barnbrook has developed a multifaceted practice which includes graphic design, typeface design and motion graphics. He has worked with clients as diverse as Damien Hirst and anti-corporate collective Adbusters.
