Publishing Research Publishing is the process of production and dissemination of literature, music, or information the activity of making information available to the general public. In some cases, authors may be their own publishers, meaning: originators and developers of content also provide media to deliver and display the content for the same. Also, the word publisher can refer to the individual who leads a publishing company or imprint or to a person who owns a magazine. Traditionally, the term refers to the distribution of printed works such as books and newspapers. With the advent of digital information systems and the Internet, the scope of publishing has expanded to include electronic resources, such as the electronic versions of books and periodicals, as well as micropublishing, websites, blogs, video game publishers and the like.

Printed Stationery Research The branding will be built up by applying the logo to various printed stationery. This will range from business cards to letterheads and also include a brand guidelines. The stationery will all be kept consistent within the design by applying the design style and elements of the branding in the same way throughout all the products. With different products, this will bring different formats, applying the branding to each of these formats within the same consistent design will prove that the branding is successfull and will be applyable to all printed products across the board.

Brand Guidelines Research The brand guidelines is a key product within the branding of the publishing company. Apart from the design of the branding itself, this is the second product to show how the company will be positioned. It is important that the whole company is captured within the guidelines as this is what anyone will see the brand for. The way in which the brand is implemented should be communicated through this product.

Brand Development The brand uses a standard typeface for the typography, which is Futura. This was chosen because of the rounded form of the letterforms which creates a isometric style within the type. Within the type set logo the small triangle beneath the ‘I’ and ‘m’ create a pencil / binding tool within the negative space. This is to represent the company as it is a publishing company and to create an interesting aesthetical element within the logo. The small traingle has been developed into creating a brand pattern. This pattern is built up from traingles, which are to represent the nature of the company - focused, driven and not afraid be on the edge. Using the branding colour ways the pattern can be a variation of different colour options, with it being a solid fill or outlined. This gives the opportunity to make the pattern fit the product / use of the pattern to the product better.

Product Development The brand guidelines is the main product for this project. With the product, I wanted to put into practice the ideas of the company - high quality, bespoke publications. The guidelines is bound with binding screws, this fits the high quality aesthetic and also allows for extra pages to be inserted if the brand develops futher. The disadvantage is that it makes it harder for the publication to be opened and read because the publication won’t open from the edge of the spine. Developing an idea for the front cover to make it open easier and further so that the rest of the pages within the publication can been seen at full size and taken advantage of. The front cover has an extra fold near the folding edge of the spine. This means that it can fully open and sit flat, leaving more space for the inner pages fold back and read.

The Brand The concept of the publishing company is to bring a new light on the publishing world. Creating a new modern and contemporary company will bring new products to publishing. The idea of the company is to value quality over quantity by producing bespoke publications and print. The focus is on the design, the materials used and the production of it all. This logo communicates the idea of a contemporary company, the rounded typeface relates to the modern and bespoke design that the company creates. Within the logo a the white space around the ‘i’ and ‘m’ creates the image of a pencil and the stabbing tool used to make holes in bookbinding. The small triangle which makes up this image contrasts the rounded typeface, the triangle comes to a point, which reflects that the company is very focussed on the value, design and product of the products it creates.
