EXTENDED PRACTICE STATEMENT OF INTENT Name: Nathan Bolton

Blog Address: n-bolton1114.blogspot.com

Statement of intent: I’m a Graphic Designer that focuses on Print and Publishing & Editorial design. With a strong set of digital and craft based skills and techniques, I strive to deliver the most effective design solution that clearly communicates to the end user.

Subjects / Themes Throughout the year I have focussed on the print medium within Publishing & Editorial, Packaging and Curation and display. Within these design areas I have used different methods such as stock, format, printing techniques and bookbinding to create interesting and unique products each time. Towards the latter end of the year my practice has shifted towards print and the screen-printing process. This has been a main influence of all my briefs in the later stages.

Design Disciplines / Creative Development Publishing & Editorial Print Branding Packaging Within all these design disciplines there is room for improvements and development, the main area I want to concentrate on developing is my illustrations skills and working on my production skills to improve the physical things I make as this is a big part of my practice.

Practical Skills / Workshops – what, why and when? Print workshop – Vernon Street – include: Screen print, emboss/deboss, letterpress, book binding.

Practical elements will be taken up on briefs when they are applicable, reasoning for the use of these is because they will add extra detailing into the design of the work and some briefs are solely based on print processes. These processes will be seen throughout majority of my briefs because it is an area of design that I am particularly interested in.

Brief 1: Imprint

Deadline

March 2014

Rationale: Create a brand and identity for a new contemporary publishing company. The branding must work across print and web and therefore needs to be adaptable to different environments, stock and colour. A name needs to be produced for the company along with brand guidelines to set out how the branding attributes should be used on products.

Brief 2: Yoke Presents Dialogue

Deadline

May 2014

Rationale: Part 1 Design and create the visual identity and promotional material for an ambitious themed print exhibition. Effectively promote the exhibition through different channels of media to spread awareness and engagement of the exhibition. Promotional material should reflect and inform the look and feel of the exhibition through the use of various print processes. Part 2 Curating the Exhibition. Curate a contemporary and engaging exhibition space to effectively display a range of themed artwork. Produce a way finding system and an innovative way of display artwork throughout the exhibition space. The aim of the exhibition is to bring people together and create a community of creatives to enable and encourage collaboration.

Brief 3: Iconic Cities

Deadline

May 2014

Rationale: Create a travel guide that engages a younger audience for travelling around cities across the world. Expand the travel guide to create a range of products that relate to travelling and could be of use within the audience’s holiday. This could be based around print, web or both. Create a pack that could be handed out within a travel agent to anyone that books a holiday within the given range.

Brief 4: Notebooks

Deadline

May 2014

Rationale: The basis of the brief is a research project. I want to research into bookbinding further and experiment with this technique. Create a range of bound publication, which are a variety of notebooks. The binding methods used should create a range of different styles of notebooks from professional to children. The focus of the notebooks should be on the bookbinding methods, but they also need a design aspect to them to be aesthetically pleasing.

Brief 5: Life With Energy

Deadline

May 2014

Rationale: Produce an information pack for first time buyers about how to save energy and money within the household. Design a range of products to for the information pack. This should be aimed at life within the home and should identify ways in which homeowners can be more environmentally friendly and cut back on home bills. The products can take any format and include as much content as you like, but it must inform the reader about energy, energy within the home and ways in which they can reduce their energy and essentially cost of running their home. The products should be designed to engage the audience and use the correct tone of voice in order to capture their attention and to get them to interact with the products and the information given.

Brief 6: Manifesto

Deadline

May 2014

Rationale: Using the Manifesto presentation, expand upon this and create an illustrated Manifesto. The manifesto should be compiled into a small pack and should include 10 points that inform the user about yourself, your work ethic and how you think. The manifesto is personal to you and this should be reflected within the design.

Brief 7: 21st Century Whisky

Deadline

May 2014

Rationale: Create a brand and packaging for an innovative 21st Century Scotch whisky that challenges category convention and rituals. It should be one that is firmly rooted in the 21st Century and shows progression from the traditional style and design of Scotch whisky. Produce a name that reflects the brand’s positioning; the product is a smooth, premium blend of highland and lowland whiskies sourced from small distilleries. The physical ‘container’ is completely open to creativity.

Brief 8: Typocircle

Deadline

November 2013

Rationale: Choose 3 designers, writers or typographers and produce a cover & at least 4 spreads on each individual. As a supplement to it's magazine, 'Circular', The Circle wish to produce a series of special books/publications on specific people who have given talks for The Circle. These publications can be of any size & format but should work as a series. They do not have to be like a magazine but should be thought of as books or 'special editions'. In addition to the publications the brief should be expanded to create an event that will be a live talk from the designers chosen for the publications. In creating the event, promotional material and literature should be designed and created to support the launch and running of it. Both elements of the brief should work as a full body of work and there should be a consistent design aesthetic across all work.

CoP / Research Theme The Relevance of Print in the Digital Age In today’s fast paced and ever growing technological society, digital design has proven to be vital. The ability to access information via different mediums at any point in time, and at any location is becoming more apparent in our current environment. New technologies are being developed at a vast rate causing designers to respond with advanced methods of communication to deliver content to their audience; as we speak the approach to digital innovations is becoming more focused and widely used.

Through this turn of digitalisation, we have seen printed products being transformed into its digital equivalent. Examples can be seen through various established magazines such as Computer Arts, Print and Wired. These examples have taken their original printed state and redesigned them as a digital product, in doing so they can change how it is interacted with by using motion, sound and video to create a whole new experience for the user. In contrast, how can a digital product be produced as a print?
