DR. ME Flag: Brief Overview Brief
Background Information
Concept
Audience
The brief is to create a flag. The flag can be based around any subject or design area. It must be 1m x 1.5m.
Bookbinding is a method used to bind a publication together and attach all the loose pages together.
Our first initial concept was to use bookbinding and paper craft to create a flag that was made out of paper, but fold down into a book.
The audience is anyone who likes to look at flags.
Within my practice of work, editorial design is a main focus; with this I use bookbinding a lot to create a more interesting and unique publication. The binding of a publication can add to the aesthetic of the publication and can even determine the format of the publication.
The second concept was to use illusion design and create a design that messes with the viewers eyes and makes them look a second time at it.
Tone of Voice
I want to experiment with bookbinding and find new methods to use within my publishing work. Deliverables 1. 1m x 1.5m fabric flag.

Illusion Research We decided to go with the second concept which was using the idea of illusion design. This decision came around because we tried many times to make the idea of the book and paper craft work, but it wasn’t fisable. Researching into illusion design gave us some ideas on how we could create the design for the flag. We wanted to use bright colours, so CMYK came to mind.

Initial Designs We created a variation of different illusion designs for the flag.

Final Flag After creating the initial designs, we evaluated each one and decided to go with the third design. This was because the colours used compliment each other better, but they also work against each other well to create the illusion. Also within the centre of the design there is a wave created by lines, this reflects the idea of the flag blowing in the wind.

Final Flag Images From deciding on the final flag design, we printed it onto poplin through a digital fabric printer. The quality of this print was amazing to say its printed directly onto fabric. The colours look great on the fabric and work against each other really well to create the illusion.
