NB Manifesto: Brief Overview Brief
Concept
Audience
Using the Manifesto presentation, expand upon this and create an illustrated Manifesto.
My Manifesto is taken from the Manifesto presentation we had to do as part of PPP. Within my presentation it voiced my opinions and thoughts on design and my own practice, along with general ideals I like to follow.
Designers. I will use the Manifesto as something to give out to designers / studios to introduce myself and tell them what I am about.
The manifesto should be compiled into a small pack and should include 10 points that inform the user about yourself, your work ethic and how you think. The manifesto is personal to you and this should be reflected within the design.
As a manifesto is personal to each indivual, it needs to be about me and come through within the design that it is centered around my thoughts. The use of simple illustrations and vibrant colours will make the Manifesto pack very visual and intising when it is opened.

Deliverables
A manifesto is a published verbal declaration of the intentions, motives, or views of the issuer, be it an individual, group, political party or government. A manifesto usually accepts a previously published opinion or public consensus and/or promotes a new idea with prescriptive notions for carrying out changes the author believes should be made. It often is political or artistic in nature, but may present an individual’s life stance. Manifestos relating to religious belief are generally referred to as creeds.
The nature of this brief was to create a product which communicates who I am as a designer. I believe something such as this is a good way to introduce yourself to potential employers / clients as its a snapshot to what you believe in, created within the discipline of design I work within.
1. Illustrated 10 point Manifesto 2. C ompiled manifesto into a small packaged product. 3. Presentation boards
For myself it was good to work on a product which was centered around myself and be something that I can use as a potential marketing tool. Working with illustration is something becoming more apparent within my practise and this was good to include and improve upon even further.

Research The main inspiration for this brief came from Illustrator Muro Buro. In this project shown opposite he worked with college students to create a Manifesto for the art & design course they were studying on. The focus of the manifesto was around the idea of arts & crafts and design. This style isn’t nessecarily the style that I want to use within my own manifesto, but I like the bold colours and illustrations that are used within the products. I think taking away the idea of how the manifesto point has been integrated into the design and it has become a way to communicate the meaning of the point through the illustration is really interesting and definately something I want to carry into my own manifesto.

Manifesto Points From doing my Manifesto Presentation I looked at the things that I believed in and quotes which helped me get along in my day to day designing. It was quite hard to define a definitive list of things which represent who I am and how I feel about design, espeically narrowing it down to 10 points. Doing this exercise did help me even more in believing in my own practice and knowing that what I believed in and followed would help me get along in life. I think a manifesto is a great tool to have beside you, it gives you something to follow and to look back onto and when you read it gives you the positivity and confidence to push on and produce amazing things.
1. Produce things with real impact. 2. Explore every possibility. 3. Keep it simple, but do it well. 4. Craftmanship shows the skill of the worker.
7. T here is no point copying the trend, do something to make yourself stand out and be different from the rest. Make yourself known for what you do.
2. A format is a constraint, think outside of the ordinary and believe what could be done. When working on a project, nothing is too big.
8. B eing positive will take you much further than you believe. Approach everything with a positive mind and see what you can achieve.
3. A peice of design has its purpose which it has to deliver on. The way in which it is created or looks should never stop the communication.
9. E verybody believes that they know everything, but open your mind and take on advice. Their experience will help you in the long run.
7. Stand out from the crowd.
4. T here is nothing wrong with being a perfectionist. Take your time, do it well and make sure it is right. It will show in the final product.
10. B y doing what you love it will make you love what you do. This will make you achieve much more than you thought was ever possible.
8. Possitivity is the key to success.
5. I f an opportunity comes your way, take hold of it and gain the experience. You will always benefit from making things happen.
9. Have an open mind.
6. L ive by experiences and learn from mistakes. You always know when something feels right, trust yourself and do what you believe is correct.
5. Seize every opportunity. 6. Trust your gut insinct.
10. Do what you love and love what you do.

Manifesto Development The main design area of the manifesto was the illustrations for the front of each manifesto point. After working on the manifesto point and creating the 10 points, the deign of the illustrations followed. Using thick stokes the illustration were kept simple, but were going to have a bold aesthetic through the use of colour within the designs. Drawing out some initial ideas for each point enabled the development of the illustrations. The focus was to communicate the idea of the manifesto point through the illustrations.

Manifesto Design The design of the manifesto is set to an A6 format, this is a good size to create the manifesto pack around as its small enough to post, but at the same time the designs are a good size to look at and read. Each manifesto card is double sided printed, the front is the the illustrated manifesto point. The illustration is kept simple and uses bold and bright colours, this is to attract the users eye and keep itvery visual for them. The back of the card displays the manifesto point and at the bottom I have described the point in my own words.

The illustrations within the manifesto are small simple illustration that represent the meaning behind each of the points. As a full set the manifesto gives a great aesthetic representation of my thoughts and is an interesting and creative way to introduce myself.

Manifesto Postcards As a set the Manifesto postcards work great. Each of the illustrations are individual, but all work together when they are placed together as the pack. The colours have printed well and give a vibrant colour scheme to the whole package. The layout of the cards is simple but straight to the point, they display the needed information in a way that is very clear and legible, with a small format such as this a simple layout is needed. These cards / pack communicate myself as a designer and my opinions and thoughts in a visual and creative way, which was the point of the brief. It makes intoriducing myself to anyone much easier and also links back to my design practice.

Manifesto Pack Making the postcards into a pack and something that could be sent out was an easy exercise. A small 4 fold folder was created that wrapped around the cards and was held closed with a sticker. On opening the folder the top card - the about me card would be presented to the user face up, so they see the design and the information straight away. In order to send the package out, it needed to be put within an envelope, I wanted something that was better than just an ordinary envelope, the use of a black metallic bubble bag solved this and has become part of my branding. Using my new personal branding, I vinyl cut the logo which was placed on the front of the packaging and on the envelope label. This branded the whole manifesto package and made it part of my identity. The folder and postage label were linked back to my personal branding by using orange stock.
