Personal Branding: Brief Overview

Brief

Concept

Audience

You will be required to demonstrate appropriate preparation for your stated progression ambitions through research into self promotion material (business cards, letterheads, creative cvs, stationary etc.) and methods (mail shots, websites, blogs. etc.). The research and development of your own design presence should be documented and evaluated throufgh regular postings to your PPP blog.

Using my previous Branding & Identity from last year, I will upate this and make it more relevant to me today.

The audience for this brief is myself, as the branding is for me, but it will be looked upon by anyone within the design industry.

I will still keep the use of my initials, as I think this is a good way to represent myself. But I feel that it should be a little more sophiscated as I have grown up as a designer from last year.

Background Information

Purpose

Deliverables

As a designer I am someone that likes to work within pure graphic design areas such as editorial & publishing, branding, packaging. But I also like to do print work, producing screen prints, letterpress and working within craft. As two different areas of design, I think I bring them together well, using the knowledge and skills learnt through graphic design to bring a well considered approach to print making.

The purpose of the brief is to create a design prescene for myself as a designer and have branding in place to look more professional when leaving university. It is important to have products in place to deal with the business side of things and also for aid when looking for jobs.

1. B randing & Identity 2. Printed Stationery

A sophiscated and professional style will be used when creating the branding, but I want it to have a personalised and quite relaxed tone of voice within the copy.

For me it is a good way to update my current branding and look at myself from a different point of view compared to last year.

Previous Identity My previous branding was designed and created last year. I feel that at the time of creating this branding it fitted me as a designer. Now I don’t think it does, as I have grown up as a designer and I don’t think the aesthetic fits my practice anymore. I don’t like the typeface that has been used and the way the logo is made up, it gives it a clunky feel which I feel reflect in a negative way towards my work. The branding that was created consisted of many products, which weren’t all designed to a conistsent desig or using the same colours, this made it feel unprofessional.

Branding & Identity From my previous branding & identity, I felt that it wasn’t consistent across the range of products. The colours weren’t all the same and the some of the products within the range were too complicated and didn’t communicate me as a designer that well.

Typefaces

With the new branding, I wanted to simplify everything and have a sense of purity within it. By using a sans serif typeface, it communicates an element of sophistication, which I feel is now true after working on my own practice throughout the year.

Keeping the identity and prodcuct designs consistent is crucial to creating a range of products that showcase who I am as a designer. In order to achieve this I have put in place certain elements of my branding which will stay the same throughout all the products. As a designer that works with print, I feel this should be reflected within the branding and the use of high quality stock and formats will come through in the products created.

Printed Stationery The printed stationery is printed onto GFSmith Mist stock and uses GFSmith Mandarin stock as the folder stock. Within the printed stationery the design has been kept consistent across the products. This has been achieved by using a 2:1 ratio column grid. This is applied to each of the products accordingly and even though there are different formats, the grid keeps the layout of the products similar and creates a coherent product range. The logo throughout the printed products is created using vinyl, this allows my branding to placed onto any of the products and where I like. It also adds to the branding and makes it interesting as there is a clear contrast between the vinyl and stock.

Meeting Folder / Creative CV When going to meet potential clients / employers I wanted to have something which I could give them at the end, which included my CV and business card. Doing things like this makes it more personal and shows you have put the effort into it. For this I have created a A5 folder which folds in half and includes a flap along the bottom. A CV can be inserted with a business card slotted into the flap. The front of the folder is personalised by being able to write the studio / designers name onto the front. This works with the personalised element of the branding and aims the pack at them.

Manifesto My Manifesto was designed and created as a seperate brief in response to the manifesto presentation we did. From that I created this Manifesto product pack. The manifesto voices my opinions and thoughts on my own practice, the design industry and general things that I follow on a day to day basis. As a product that is very personal to myself, it introduces who I am and what I believe in within design, therefore it is a great product to have as part of my branding. I think the illustrated cards show the fun side of my personality as even though they are created to illustrate the manifesto point, they aren’t that serious and have a fun element towards them.

Notepad As someone that likes to make things, especially when it comes to printed products, I wanted to use this skill within my branding. I always find when I need to write something down or keep a note of something, I never have anything around to do this on. Creating this notepad will solve the problem and with it being branded with my identity it will tie in with the rest of the products.

Website The website is hosted and created using Squarespace. It offers many templates which are simplistic, but look great on the web, these can all be customised and be changed using html. The main reason to use sqaurespace was the user interface, it makes it easy to create new pages and upload images through drag and drop. All images can be resized and re arranged within the screen to create layouts within each of the pages. I choose to use a tiled portfolio style template, as this best showcased my work. The home page is a composition of all work displayed as a grid of tiles, the project pages are accessed through clicking on the image. Each project pages contains large images which are sized to fit the full width of the template, to best show the project products and details.
