Notebooks: Brief Overview Brief

Concept

Audience

The basis of the brief is a research project. I want to research into bookbinding further and experiment with this technique.

The concept of the whole brief is to draw attention to bookbinding as a craft. It is something that within the publishing world is definatly a method / process which has been brought back into todays industry.

The audience will be creative professionals and students, ones that understand the methods and craftsmanship gone into the production of the notebooks.

Create a range of bound publication, which are a variety of notebooks. The binding methods used should create a range of different styles of notebooks from professional to children. The focus of the notebooks should be on the bookbinding methods, but they also need a design aspect to them to be aesthetically pleasing. Background Information Bookbinding is a method used to bind a publication together and attach all the loose pages together. Within my practice of work, editorial design is a main focus; with this I use bookbinding a lot to create a more interesting and unique publication. The binding of a publication can add to the aesthetic of the publication and can even determine the format of the publication. I want to experiment with bookbinding and find new methods to use within my publishing work.

Bookbinding can determine the format of the publication or it can add to the aesthetics of it, either way the bind of a publication is an important factor, if think about it in a more creative way other than just using a saddle stitch or simple sewn stitch the work produced can be much more appealing. Throughout the notebooks created in this brief the bind, format, stocks and craftsmanship of them will be the main focus and things that bring it together as a whole. Purpose The purpose of this brief for me is to experiment with bookbinding methods and improve my knowledge and technique of using them within publications.

Tone of Voice The overall style of the notebook will communicate different aspects.

Deliverables 1. Range of Notebooks 2. Experimentation into the production of the bookbinding methods used. 3. Collated research into methods of bookbinds.

For the audience the purpose is to show the use of bookbinding and how to integrate it within a product. It also shows them how to carry out the binding methods.

Bookbinding Research Bookbinding is the process of physically assembling a book from a number of folded or unfolded sheets of paper or other material. It usually involves attaching a book cover to the resulting text-block. Before the computer age, the bookbinding trade involved two divisions. First, there was the stationery or vellum binding and secondly there was letterpress binding which deals with making new books intended to be read from and includes fine binding, library binding, edition binding, and publisher’s bindings. A result of the new bindings is a third division dealing with the repair, restoration, and conservation of old used bindings. Today modern bookbinding is divided between hand binding by individual craftsmen versus mass produced bindings by high speed machines in a bindery factory. Binding Methods shown: 1. Perfect Bound 2. Thermabind 3. Saddle Stitched 4. Spiral Bind 5. Open Bind 6. Case Bound

Bookbinding in context The majority of publication use a binding method, unless it is a folded publication. The most creative binding techniques seen are those that are used in a different way or that determine the actual publication format itself. The most interesting binding methods used are normally found on short run bespoke publication, that you would find have been bound by hand. This can be achieved with these publications because are only a selected amount produced.

Resources & Processes As this brief is all about craft, there is alot of hands on work involved within the production of the notebooks. This requires bookbinding tools, cutting equipment & stocks etc, these are essential to create a range a products which are all consistent within the set, but also varied to create an interesting set of notebooks. With this project the main purpose is to experiment through doing. This will involve alot of craft & making and using bookbinding techniques and methods. As a research project, I will investigate into the different methods of bookbinding, then put this into practice through making the range of notebooks. Formats, stock, craft and techniques was all taken into account when creating each of the notebooks, this was a hands on brief.

The Fact File The research collected at the beginning of the brief was put together into a Fact File. This refers to all the information I found useful when researching into the project at the beginning. Information is based on the design area of bookbinding, this includes - History of bookbinding - Format - Stock - Bookbinding Methods As a short booklet, this includes the essential information to get anyone who is interested in bookbinding looking into the subject and hopefully it will spur them on to research further and find out more. The design of the fact file takes into account the information and uses the theory within the publication to create the publication in itself - this reflects the information on formats and binding methods.

The Notebooks The notebook range consists of 10 notebooks which are all indivdually bound in a different ways using a different binding method each time. All notebooks are at A5 format, as from peer research this was the format most prefered a notebook to be. Using various stocks for both the covers and inners of the notebooks each one differs in design, but are all focussed around being a high quality product that takes pride in the craftsmanship to produce them. All notebooks are hand made and hand bound, making each a unique product. From creating the product range, it has taught me alot about the different methods there are to bind a product and that it shouldn’t be something that is thought about at the end, as it can change the way in which the product is created from the outset.
