FAIRBURN: MIXED-USE REVIVAL Friends + Citizens Studio: Summer 2021 CO-OP All work done in collaboration with Elsie Mcguigan, Kenzie Trujilo, and Becca Woytassek

As apart of CO-OP’s summer internship program, the collaborating interns work on a developmental project that is integrated into a community in South Dakota. After an analysis of zoning, parking, surrounding context, and other community characteristics, a site was chosen in hopes to promote the down town experience in Rapid City. Through the lens of case studies and budget proformas, the buildings form took shape to encourage community interaction. The building, named the Fairburn, is a mixed use program that encourages new food vendors and creates a pedestrian street way and courtyard for shopping and relaxing. The existing parking is lifted up to the intermediate floors to open up the main level. The garage allows for easy parking along the main access to the area. The residential levels are set back to provide shared space that overlooks down town. Apartments vary from studios to three bedrooms. The facade is a flexible screen structure that masks the different programs of the building. Its pattern originates from the fairburn agate that the surrounding region is known for.

A PSEUDO IMAGE: AG. HERITAGE BUILDING ARCH 451: F 2019 Jessica Garcia Fritz All work done in collaboration with Joseph Kenny

The studios focus was to understand the construction of the Agricultural Heritage Building in Brookings South Dakota. Through the exploration of how Revit worked through modeling and drawing, a critique of the differences between manual modes of drawing and making was made. The misuses of Revit were explored. We started to work through section first and then drew from there. The model of the Ag. Heritage Building was modeled then, and compared to the more drawing like sections. Finally we created a half scale pseudo model that simulated the buildings construction. These methods allowed to understand the process and difference of how we make in both the digital and physical world. The analysis of the building created three focuses to begin to design the gallery expansion of the museum. The new addition was based of the module of the brick, the hidden steel structure, and the kit of parts.

UNDERSTANDING DETAILS: DOWNTOWN GYMNASIUM ARCH 555: S 2021 F. G. Lammers, J. G. Fritz, B. Lee, R. Arlt. N. Mansour

The studio started with redrawing and manipulating existing detail drawings. The details focused on the varying ground conditions, the openings, and the roof and spanning system. It explored a variety of construction methods and conditions. From the exploration, a collage of details were made to make up the constraints of the site and program of the gym. The spanning structure was pulled out similar to Crown Hall to create a colonnade and limit the structure on the interior of the envelope. The building is divided by private service space and public gymnasium space. The two are divided by a public street way that allows you to go through the site. The facade acts as a sign to the entry of down town Sioux Falls. The active floor height is raised to be the same height as the park across from the street, sot that the active planes relate to one another.
