FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Friends, A warm welcome to the National LGBTQ Task Force’s Miami Recognition Dinner— and, no, we haven’t spiked your aperitifs, our name has indeed changed. Our name and our brand have evolved to better reflect who we have always been: the nation’s inclusive LGBTQ organization. The organization that is unapologetically out and proud, a group of people that unequivocally want to create a world where you can be you without any barriers — hence our new tagline “Be You.” And our country’s oldest national LGBTQ advocacy organization that has a 21st century plan to move beyond marriage to deliver full freedom, justice and equality for all. We live in exciting times — and we have fought many years for our progress — where, thanks in no small part to the marriage equality movement, millions of people are beginning to feel that they can be themselves for the first time in their lives. But, despite leaps forward, there are millions of folks, just like you and me, who face a myriad of barriers affecting every aspect of their lives: in housing, employment, health care, retirement, and basic human rights. There are millions in our community who are still treated as second-class citizens. That’s why you need to know that from South Beach to Venice Beach, the National LGBTQ Task Force will be the uncompromising voice—leading our movement, building the grassroots power of LGBTQ people, creating a nation where people can bring their entire selves to life without fear of persecution, discrimination and violence. Tonight’s honorees personify our new tag line “Be You.” In
fact by being themselves, they have inspired generations to work harder for positive change. Jim Pepper was a beacon of light in the early days of HIV/AIDS — and to this day through his leadership, generosity and action, has really made a difference in the quality of people’s lives. His selfless service to our community will be recognized tonight. Kristin Beck served our nation in another way as a US Navy Seal. Through her service, bravery and sacrifice, this much-decorated service member was an inspirational hero to many. As a veteran, she has shown extraordinary bravery in doing one of the hardest things for anyone to do – be herself. Be herself as an out transgender woman. We thank Jim and Kristin both for their service to our community. On behalf of the board and staff of the National LGBTQ Task Force, I also want to express my deep gratitude to the members of the Dinner Committee, each of whom has worked tirelessly on this wonderful evening. Bradley Carlson and Josue Santiago have been unstoppable cochairs, leading an extraordinary committee, keeping this event in the spotlight and delivering what we expect to be our most successful yet. I also give thanks and appreciation to the generous individuals and companies who’ve made financial contributions to this spectacular event. Dear Gala Guests, Welcome to SPARKLE: The 18th Annual Miami Recognition Dinner! This year, we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the first Dinner hosted by the National LGBTQ Task Force. For more than a decade, we have come together under the Task Force’s banner to honor our heroes, celebrate our community and raise money to advance the cause of equality for LGBTQ people. Tonight, we’re proud to continue that tradition by presenting this year’s Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award to our dear friend, James G. Pepper. Jim is an extraordinary individual whose leadership, kindness, wise counsel and generosity have helped build our community. Jim has been a teacher, confidant, sounding board and friend to countless people, including us. He is a philanthropist without parallel. We’re also excited to recognize Kristin Beck with the National Leadership Award. As the first transgender U.S. Navy Seal, Kristin is pioneering the next frontier of equality
Each year, the Task Force donates a significant portion of the proceeds from this event and from Winter Party Festival to The Miami Foundation. The Foundation then assembles an objective advisory committee that oversees a competitive process to award grants to Miami-Dade nonprofits that serve the LGBT community. Over the years, the Task Force has donated more than $1.85 million dollars to The Miami Foundation’s GLBT Community Projects Fund to make grants to organizations that provide services to youth, promote the arts and culture, foster advocacy, build community and deliver social services. The remainder of the proceeds supports the important nationwide advocacy and grassroots organizing efforts of the National LGBTQ Task Force. We thank you and our sponsors for your continued support of the Miami Recognition Dinner and for ensuring that local organizations continue to receive this funding. Finally, this event would not be possible without a group of more than 40 dedicated volunteer committee members we call our “MRD Dream Team.” This group of individuals spends almost an entire year lining up sponsors and auction items, selling tickets, planning the program and promoting the event. ABOUT EDDY MCINTYRE Sometimes awards are named after people who stand out in the community. The Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award is named for someone who stood out and stood up. The breadth of Eddy’s interests and contributions across this community are legion. It was clear that Eddy understood the society we lived in was ours to create, even as it shaped us. Eddy understood that if he saw something needed, he could help make it happen. Eddy understood that community is a participatory and not a passive experience. And, of course, Eddy never sought any personal credit or acknowledgment. But Eddy had no trouble giving recognition to others. As a founding board member of the Dade Human Rights Foundation, it was Eddy, along with his co-board member Rosemary Wilder, who envisioned an annual dinner to acknowledge and appreciate the service of some of the community’s leaders. Thus was the annual recognition dinner born, and tonight we celebrate its 18th anniversary—18 years of honoring many who have made wonderful contributions to our community. And though each one likely made his or her contributions without thought of recognition or thanks, they nonetheless received both. Eddy received neither recognition nor the award, no matter how well deserved it was. He probably would have been embarrassed to receive this
honor while alive, it seeming to him too unseemly to receive an award he had helped to establish. But the fact remains that Eddy well belonged in that select group of honorees. So as we go forward, we want to be sure that each of the future honorees understands that he or she is in Eddy’s company. The National LGBTQ Task Force’s Miami Recognition Dinner, and the Gay & Lesbian Community Projects Fund at The Miami Foundation, which is funded by the proceeds of this dinner, therefore named the annual Community Service Award as the Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award. And so by saying “Thank You” to others, we keep alive the spirit, the passion, and the empowerment that Eddy so selflessly shared with us all. HONOREE James G. Pepper
2014 Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award The National LGBTQ Task Force is proud to present the 2014 Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award to activist, leader and philanthropist James G. Pepper. Pepper has been a key figure in the equality movement for over 40 years. He played a major role in creating awareness of the significant impact of HIV/AIDS in the 1980’s and served in leadership positions at a number of organizations, including Lambda Legal and Gay Men’s Health Crisis, the country’s first AIDS service organization. He co-founded Stonewall Community Foundation, the LGBT public charity of New York City. Pepper supports numerous South Florida LGBT organizations such as Pridelines Youth Services, SAVE and the ACLU of Florida. One of the nation’s leaders in LGBT philanthropy, Pepper is credited with inspiring many community leaders and activists in the art of giving. Jim has raised and directed millions of dollars to the fight for LGBT equality. The 2014 Miami Recognition Dinner Co-Chairs Josue Santiago and Bradley Carlson consider Pepper a mentor, crediting him for the leadership roles both have taken in the LGBT community.
HONOREE Kristin Beck
2014 National Leadership Award The National LGBTQ Task Force is proud to present the 2014 National Leadership Award to civil rights activist Kristin Beck. Born Christopher Beck, she is the first known transgender U.S. Navy SEAL. She retired after twenty years of exceptionally meritorious service and is now a passionate civil rights activist with a focus on LGBT equality in the U.S. Armed Forces. In addition to being a spokesperson for The 296 Project, a nonprofit veteran therapy organization, Beck also serves as a board member of the Military Freedom Coalition, a nonprofit organization working on issues affecting LGBT service members in the U.S. Armed Forces. Beck was recently the subject of the highly acclaimed CNN Films’ Lady Valor: The Kristin Beck Story, a documentary film chronicling her journey as a transgender woman. We are thrilled to recognize her tonight as the first transgender honoree in the history of the Miami Recognition Dinner.

SUPPORT FOR THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY Since its inception, the Miami Recognition Dinner has provided vital funding for organizations serving the South Florida LGBT community. When the National LGBTQ Task Force assumed responsibility for the Dinner and for Winter Party Festival in 2004, it committed to continuing to return a significant amount of the proceeds from these events to local service organizations through a grant-making process administered by The Miami Foundation. Since then, the Task Force has donated over $1.85 million dollars to the Foundation’s GLBT Community Projects Fund. Established in 1967, The Miami Foundation is Greater Miami’s permanent philanthropic endowment for enhancing the quality of life of all Miami-Dade County residents. The Foundation provides non-profit organizations with funding support and technical assistance for programs and projects that benefit the community. And for its many donors, the Foundation provides an effective vehicle for charitable giving and grant-making expertise across a broad spectrum of community issues and needs.
