FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Friends, A warm welcome to the National LGBTQ Task Force Gala - Miami, the annual must-attend event formally known as the Miami Recognition Dinner. So much life-changing history has been made since the last time we got together for a great cause, and so much of that history happened in no small part because of the work of the people we are honoring tonight. Take the basic right to marry your partner right here in Florida. It would still be a pipe dream without the leadership and courage of people such as Juan Bosco Talavera, who stood with his partner Jeff and other same-sex couples in 2005 to challenge Florida’s marriage ban. And today this basic right wouldn’t be the law of the entire land if we didn’t have the brilliant legal mind of Mary Bonauto, one of the leading architects of the U.S. Supreme Court marriage equality victory.

That’s why you need to know that the National LGBTQ Task Force will be the uncompromising voice leading our movement, building the grassroots power of LGBTQ people, creating a nation where people can bring their entire selves to life without fear of persecution, discrimination and violence. On behalf of our board and staff, I also want to express my deep gratitude to Josue Santiago and Charles Million. They have been brilliant co-chairs, leading an extraordinary committee, keeping this event in the spotlight and delivering what we expect to be our most successful yet. I also give thanks to the generous individuals and companies who’ve made financial contributions to this spectacular event. Your support benefits not only the National LGBTQ Task Force’s mission; it directly impacts the lives of LGBTQ people in the Miami-Dade community. Finally, thank you for joining us for the rest of the journey to full freedom, justice and equality. My best,

We thank Juan and Mary for their courage, leadership and action on this issue and on many others. We made history with an extraordinary marriage equality victory — and we need to make history again on many other issues. There are millions of LGBTQ people who face a myriad of barriers affecting every aspect of their lives: in housing, employment, health care, in their places of worship, retirement, and basic human rights. LGBTQ people still face formidable barriers to economic justice, reproductive rights, racial justice, and the ballot box. Congress has yet to fix our broken immigration system impacting tens of thousands of LGBTQ undocumented immigrants. And across the country, politicians are manipulating “religious liberty” to impose their prejudices by law on everyone else — attempting to roll back real progress on LGBTQ freedom, justice and equality.

FROM OUR EVENT CO-CHAIRS Dear Gala Guests, Welcome to the National LGBTQ Task Force Gala – Miami. For more than a decade, we have come together under the Task Force’s banner to honor our heroes, celebrate our community and raise money to advance equality for LGBTQ people. Tonight we gather after a momentous year of progress, including the Supreme Court’s decision that made marriage equality the law of our land. We invite you to join us as we take the time to recognize and celebrate our accomplishments and those who have helped achieve them. We are grateful for the opportunity to honor two heroes who have contributed over the course of many years to the success we celebrate tonight. Mary L. Bonauto will receive our National Leadership Award in recognition of her long-term commitment to marriage equality and her substantial work toward securing this fundamental right. This year Mary successfully argued the Obergefell v. Hodges case before the U.S. Supreme Court resulting in the freedom to marry for same-sex couples. We will present this year’s Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award to Juan Bosco Talavera, a hero who has provided leadership to many of our local LGBTQ organizations. Juan’s dedication includes serving as SAVE’s board chair and as a board member for numerous other organizations. We are proud to honor Juan and his more than twenty years of work to advance equality here in our community. Each year, the Task Force donates a significant portion of the proceeds from this event and from the Winter Party Festival to The Miami Foundation. The Foundation then assembles an advisory committee that awards grants to Miami-Dade non-profits that serve the LGBTQ community. Over the years more than $2.1 million dollars have been granted to organizations that provide services to

youth, promote arts and culture, foster advocacy, build community and deliver social services. The remainder of the proceeds supports the important nationwide advocacy and grassroots organizing efforts of the National LGBTQ Task Force. We thank you and our sponsors for your ongoing support of the Task Force Gala and for ensuring that local organizations continue to receive this funding. Finally, this event would not be possible without a group of more than 40 dedicated committee members. This group of individuals spends almost an entire year lining up sponsors and auction items, selling tickets, planning the program and promoting the event. Without them, this event could not happen. We are forever grateful. We hope you enjoy your evening, and we thank you for your support. Sincerely, Josue Santiago and Charles Million Co-Chairs The Task Force Gala – Miami

ABOUT EDDY MCINTYRE

Sometimes awards are named after people who stand out in the community. The Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award is named for someone who stood out and stood up. The breadth of Eddy’s interests and contributions across this community are legion. It was clear that Eddy understood the society we lived in was ours to create, even as it shaped us. Eddy understood that if he saw something needed, he could help make it happen. Eddy understood that community is a participatory and not a passive experience. And, of course, Eddy never sought any personal credit or acknowledgment. But Eddy had no trouble giving recognition to others. As a founding board member of the Dade Human Rights Foundation, it was Eddy, along with his co-board member Rosemary Wilder, who envisioned an annual dinner to acknowledge and appreciate the service of some of the community’s leaders. Thus was the annual Recognition Dinner born, and tonight we celebrate its 19th anniversary — 19 years of honoring many who have made wonderful contributions to our community. And though each one likely made his or her contributions without thought of recognition or thanks, they nonetheless received both. Eddy received neither recognition nor the award, no matter how well deserved it was. He probably would have been embarrassed to receive this honor while alive, it seeming to him too unseemly

to receive an award he had helped to establish. But the fact remains that Eddy well belonged in that select group of honorees. So as we go forward, we want to be sure that each of the future’s honorees understands that he or she is in Eddy’s company. The National LGBTQ Task Force Gala – Miami, and the GLBT Community Projects Fund at The Miami Foundation, which is funded by the net proceeds of this event, therefore named the annual Community Service Award as the Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award. And so by saying “Thank You” to others, we keep alive the spirit, the passion, and the empowerment that Eddy so selflessly shared with us all. Adapted by Jerry Chasen from his remarks announcing the naming of the Award.

Juan Bosco Talavera 2015 Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award

The National LGBTQ Task Force is proud to present the 2015 Eddy McIntrye Community Service Award to activist and community leader, Juan Bosco Talavera. Juan has devoted more than 20 years of his life to serving the LGBTQ community. He’s volunteered, raised funds and served in leadership roles as a committee or Board member with numerous South Florida organizations including SAVE, MiFo “LGBT Film Festival”, Pridelines, Health Crisis Network and People with AIDS Coalition. He’s also a founding board member of the new OUT Miami Foundation. While on the Board of Directors for SAVE, Juan worked tirelessly on the campaign to pass the Dade County Human Rights Ordinance. He later became board chair and, during his tenure, SAVE secured the passage of legislation to provide domestic partners benefits to employees in Miami-Dade County, the City of Miami, and other municipalities, as well as the addition of

transgender protection to the Miami and Miami Beach human rights ordinances. Juan and his husband, Jeff Ronci, were among the first couples to get their marriage license when the stay on same-sex unions was lifted in Florida. They were plaintiffs in an ACLU lawsuit challenging Amendment 2 back in 2005. We are honored to recognize him tonight, as he has been instrumental in promoting LGBTQ rights in South Florida.

Mary L. Bonauto

2015 National Leadership Award The National LGBTQ Task Force is proud to present the 2015 National Leadership Award to attorney and civil rights activist, Mary L. Bonauto. As Civil Rights Project Director at Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders, she has been a champion in the courtroom on issues including discrimination, parental rights, free speech and religious liberty. She led GLAD’s federal court challenges to the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in Gill v. OPM and Pedersen v. OPM, leading to the first federal court rulings against DOMA, and then coordinated amici briefs for the Windsor case at the Supreme Court. Earlier this year Mary was one of the three attorneys who argued Obergefell v. Hodges before the U.S. Supreme Court. This landmark case established the freedom to marry for samesex couples nationwide and is considered one of the most important civil rights cases to come before the U.S. Supreme Court in modern history. Mary’s work has been recognized with numerous awards, including most recently the 2014 MacArthur Fellowship. She is the Shikes Fellow in Civil Liberties and Civil Rights and Lecturer on Law at Harvard Law School, serves on an advisory board for the American Constitution Society, and has served as co-chair of the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Committee

of the American Bar Association’s Section on Individual Rights and Responsibilities. We are thrilled to recognize her tonight, as her work will have ripple effects on LGBTQ freedom, justice and equality for years to come.

EMCEE

Leslie Jordan The Task Force Gala – Miami is thrilled to have actor and playwright Leslie Jordan as our emcee for the evening. He is best known for his Emmy Award winning role as Karen Walker’s pretentious, sexually ambiguous rival, Beverley Leslie, on the hit television series Will & Grace. Jordan is also an accomplished stage actor. In one of his most celebrated onstage performances, he played Earl “Brother Boy” Ingram in Sordid Lives, a role he took to the big screen in the popular cult film of the same name. Recently, he enjoyed a guest-starring role in the third season of FX’s instant classic, American Horror Story, opposite Hollywood heavyweights Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Sarah Paulson and Francis Conroy. He also played the employer of the Emma Stone’s character in The Help, a movie about the relationship between southern socialites and their maids during the civil rights era. Over the years, Jordan has helped raise funds for several LGBT organizations. Early on in the AIDS crisis, Jordan became involved in AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA) as a buddy and as a food delivery person for Project Angel Food.

CARLOS A. GIMENEZ MAYOR MIAMI-DADE COUNTY

October 24, 2015 Greetings! As Mayor of Miami-Dade County and on behalf of our 2.6 million residents, I want to welcome everyone gathered for the National LGBTQ Task Force Gala-Miami. This year, the 2015 Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award recipient is Juan Bosco Talavera. His many years of activism for LGBTQ rights, as well as his participation as a member of the board in many vital South Florida community organizations, are just some of the reasons he is being honored. The 2015 National Leadership Award recipient, Mary Bonauto, is an attorney and civil rights activist who argued before the United States Supreme Court to guarantee same-sex couples the fundamental right to marry. I commend them both for their continued advocacy for LGBTQ rights and appreciate their efforts. Miami-Dade County is proud of its diversity and I am certain there is no better community to host your event. We are home to residents from over 156 countries, who communicate in more than 64 languages. If you are visiting, I encourage you to take advantage of our world-class beaches, hotels, restaurants, shopping, attractions, arts and culture, and recreation. ABOUT THE TASK FORCE

The National LGBTQ Task Force advances full freedom, justice and equality for LGBTQ people. We’re building a future where everyone is free to be themselves in every aspect of their lives. Today, despite all the progress we’ve made to end discrimination, millions of LGBTQ people face barriers in every aspect of their lives: in housing, employment, healthcare, retirement, and basic human rights. These barriers must go. That’s why the Task Force is training and mobilizing millions of activists across our nation to deliver a world where you can be you.
