“Silk For The Green World”
Silk is the most important animal fiber known to
mankind. Silk fabrics are famous throughout the world for their lustrous appearance and smooth surface and recent years have seen an increased demand for silk products in the world market. This has led to the fact that sericulture is currently practiced in more than 40 countries around the world; with ASEAN being the main source of silk for the world.
It is a great honour for Thailand to host the “ASEAN
collaboration on Sericulture Research and Development” during 6-10 August 2009. The prime objective of the ASEAN Collaboration is to encourage and promote the development and improvement of sericulture among ASEAN member countries.
About the ASEAN Collaboration
The objectives of the ASEAN Collaboration are
to provide a pre workshop (round table) from all ASEAN member countries, to exchange knowledge and ideas on sericulture, and to discuss future cooperation in sericultural development, during 10-13 March 2009 at Amari Watergate Hotel, Bangkok.
Conference during 6-10 August 2009 in Bangkok,
will consist of a sericulture overview in each ASEAN country presented by the delegate of that country; a presentation on the sericultural research of each country; and a visit to the “Art of the Kingdom” at Ananda Samakhom Throne Hall. During the event poster session or exhibition, 3 x 6 square meter booths will be provided to each country.

Round Table Discussion
Discussion on the suitable format of the ASEAN
Sericulture Congress to be held in August 2009. 1. Academic
- Discussion on the topics of research papers to be
presented (the scope being mulberry cultivtion, silk rearing technique mulberry and silk breeding, mulberry and silk products, molecular biotechnology, plant protection, post harvest, etc.). 2. Exhibition
2.1 Discussion on the preparation of the ASEAN
Exhibition Zone in the ASEAN Sericulture Congress, which will display each countries’ sericulture products that can be commercialized.
2.2 Discussion on the preparation of ASEAN Fusion,
where each country will be provided with an area of 3x3 square meters (with the ASEAN symbol) to display products that are deemed outstanding and unique to their country. 3. Competition
- Discussion on the preparation of silk textile and
garment competition. 4. Individual prizes
- Discussion on the nominated individuals who have
devotedly contributed to mulberry cultivation and silk breeding on an ASEAN level, for example, outstanding academic research, work on sericulture preservation, work on cultural national sericulture in terms of economy and society.

5. Designating the frequency of the Congress
- Discussion on the next ASEAN Sericulture Congress,
the frequency in holding the Congress and the next host country. 6. Establishment of the ASEAN Sericulture Association
- Discussion on the appropriateness in establishing
the ASEAN Sericulture Association • Objective of establishment • Registration and the Association’s headquarters • Chairman, secretariat, treasurer and directors of the Association • The Association’s articles (membership, fees, etc.) Language: Official language of the pre-workshop is English with the exception of Thai people.

Country Report
15 minutes will be provided for each ASEAN
country presentation. The presentation should be aimed on the sericulture situation in each delegate’s country in the following topics: • Area of Mulberry cultivation • Fresh cocoon and silk yarn production • Sericulture farmer household • Silk and Mulberry products such as silk fabric, silk accessories, mulberry tea, mulberry wine, cosmetic, etc. • Sericulture research and development

The basic registration fee during the event is free
of charge for one delegate from each ASEAN country. The Queen Sirikit Institute of Sericulture will support all expenses such as international airfare, local transportation, accommodation and main meals (any other expenses will be borne solely by the delegates). Conference (6-10 August 2009)
