Yoga Central

Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life! Eliminate problems like overeating, Smoking or Stress ... Forever!

R

ecently, we had the opportunity to chat with Beth Youmans, owner of Yoga Central, yoga instructor, and all around amazing person. In addition to owning Yoga Central, Beth Youmans, PhD, E-RYT500, Beth has been teaching stress management in a variety of settings for over 35yrs. She has studied yoga since the mid 90’s and attended training with a variety of teachers (including, Erich Shiffman, Jon Kabat-Zinn, Paul Grilley, Bobbi Ellis, Stephanie Pappas, Sarah Powers and more).

What attracted you to yoga?

When I was in high school/college I found myself searching for books on yoga. Back then it was much more difficult to find yoga classes. I was able to find yoga classes when I moved to California in the 70’s but found myself more drawn to meditation at that point. Fast forward, I became an avid runner in the 70’s completing marathons and shorter races and did not stretch. I began to experience injuries. When I sought out yoga to heal my body, I found the profound effect it had on my mind and spirit as well. I have maintained a meditation practice from the 70s.

When did you open Yoga Central? I opened Yoga Central in 2001 after completing a750hr training and completing my doctorate in psychology. The yoga teacher training helped me get through the dissertation process!

What was your motivation for opening a yoga studio? We are fortunate to be exposed to practices that enhance our time on this earth. Sharing those practices and seeing people flourish is a gift. I have long consulted at major corporations as an employee assistance counselor and in that capacity I have been able to teach meditation, office yoga and other skills that make the day-to-day work life less challenging and potentially more fulfilling. A yoga studio allowed me to incorporate a wider array of practices.

OneSpiritFeStival.Org ClintOn COmmunity Center, HalStead Street, ClintOn, nJ

Does the studio have any special features? Our teachers are long-term practitioners, continue to get more training and are very cognizant of adjusting the class to meet the needs of the students. We are less about attaining the perfect headstand and more about being peaceful in body, mind and spirit and letting the peacefulness express itself in kindness to others and self. We offer meditation classes monthly.

What do your students like best about the studio? People remark that YC is a warm and friendly studio. They like that there are a variety of classes and that there is no pressure. Yoga Boosts Brain Gray Matter

R

esearch from the Brain Imaging and Analysis Center at Duke University Medical Center has found that a regular hatha yoga practice increases gray matter within the brain, reversing the loss found among those with chronic pain. The researchers tested seven hatha yoga meditation practitioners and seven non-practitioners. Each of the subjects underwent tests for depression, anxiety, moods and cognition levels, along with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain scans. The scientists found that the brains of the yoga meditation practitioners contained significantly greater gray matter by volume in key brain regions, including the frontal, temporal and occipital cortices, plus the cerebellum and the hippocampus, compared to the non-yoga subjects. The yoga meditation practitioners also had more gray area in the prefrontal cortex regions that are involved in decision-making, reward/consequence, control and coordination.

Support Groups Keep Artery Patients Mobile

R

esearch published in the Journal of the American Heart Association has determined that when peripheral artery disease patients engage in behavioral support groups that encourage exercise, they realize increased mobility. The researchers from Northwestern University followed 194 patients for a year, testing subjects at six months and again at 12 months. The patients were divided into two groups; one attended weekly intervention group meetings, while the control group attended weekly lectures. After six months, the researchers found that only 6.3 percent of those that attended the support group meetings experienced mobility loss, compared to 26.5 percent of those that didn’t attend the meetings. After one year, the support group attendees again showed positive results. The control group had 18.5 percent loss in mobility, while only 5.2 percent of the support group attendees did.

Smog Increases Stroke Risk

R

esearch from Germany has found that the high particulate numbers in smoggy areas increase the risk of stroke. The Heinz Nixdorf Recall study followed more than 4,400 people between the ages of 45 and 74 years old. The researchers began the study in 2000. They compared stroke and heart attacks to air pollution particulate matter (PM) levels of PM10 (particle sizes of 10 micrometers or less) and PM2.5 (2.5 micrometers or less). The study found that stroke incidence was more than two-and-a-half times higher among people with long-term exposure to PM10, while stroke incidence increased by more than three times among people with long-term exposure to PM2.5 smog. 14

Chamomile Tea Helps Us Live Longer

NaturalAwakeningsCNJ.com

n a study of 1,677 Mexican-American men and women over the age of 65 from the Southwestern U.S., researchers have found that drinking chamomile tea decreases the risk of earlier mortality by an average of 29 percent. Researchers from the University of Texas Medical Branch followed the study population for seven years. Among those tested, 14 percent drank chamomile tea regularly. These were primarily women, and those women that drank chamomile tea experienced a 33 percent reduced mortality during the study period. The small group of men that drank the chamomile tea regularly did not register a significant difference in mortality. Chamomile also has a long history of use in folk medicine and is primarily used to settle digestion and calm the mind. It is a leading natural herbal tea in many countries and contains no caffeine. While various species may be used, chamomile tea is traditionally made by infusing the flowers of either German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) or Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) into hot water. In Spanish-speaking regions, chamomile tea is often referred to as manzanilla tea—consumed in Mexico and other Spanish cultures for centuries.

Muscle-Building Supplements Linked to Testicular Cancer

Is Your Marriage in Crisis?

N

ew research published in the British Journal of Cancer has found that taking muscle-building supplements can increase the risk of testicular cancer by up to 65 percent. The study monitored 356 cancer patients and 513 control subjects, all from Connecticut and Massachusetts. The case-control study was conducted by researchers from the Yale School of Public Health and the Harvard School of Public Health, and tested for testicular germ cell cancer. About 90 percent of testicular cancers originate from germ cells. The researchers found the subjects that used multiple musclebuilding supplements and those that began using the supplements when they were younger had the greatest risk of developing cancer.

Ondov Relationship Coaching

esearch published in Molecular Nutrition & Food Research has found a new mechanism that may provide the key to why some foods are particularly healthy. The researchers found that epigallocatechin gallates, a class of polyphenols contained in green tea, apples, cocoa and other herbs and foods, blocks vascular endothelial growth factor, or VEGF, which is implicated in the buildup of plaque in the arteries, as well as cancer growth. Blocking VEGF helps prevent angiogenesis—when tumors form new blood vessels that help them grow. The researchers, from the Institute of Food Research, in Norwich, in the United Kingdom, tested the polyphenols, as well as human cells, in the laboratory.

A Walking and Yoga Intervention By Sara Elmiligi

T

he holy month of Ramadan is a spiritual and body cleanse for a Muslim during the religious 2920 day period. For millions of Muslims worldwide, fasting is part of this observance and involves an obligatory conscious abstinence from food and water from sunrise to sunset. The duration of the fast depends on geographical location and season conditions. After sunset, Muslims have no restrictions with any food or liquid consumption. This is when the cortical monkey takes over within many people. Dinner, dessert, coffee, no sleep, and people adapt to the late night owl regimen. How detrimental is this cortical monkey that comes out of the fasting person? A study in Saudia Arabia showed that nearly 2/3 of a 173 participant sample of women had gained 6.5 pounds or more of weight. An outsider might wonder how this could be possible if a woman is intermittent fasting for a month? Almost half of these Saudi

Arabian women reported it was directly related to overeating at social gatherings at night and nearly 88% of those women consumed pastries and coffee after sunset. Would exercise be a solution to this “overeating at night” habit? The answer is yes! For my graduate thesis in Exercise Science, I conducted a Walking and Yoga Intervention for Fasting Women During Ramadan. The study included 33 women aged 18 or older who were fasting during the month of Ramadan. The women were randomly divided into walking, yoga, or control groups. The walking and yoga groups performed their assigned exercise twice a week. Before the intervention began, I performed several tests to measure fitness, flexibility and stress along with body composition measurements. The walking group would meet after dinner for a 1-mile walk. Many particularly enjoyed the walking group

because it was a time when they could socialize, exercise a little, and drop the weight of their day into a nice fresh breeze of air. The yoga group met for 45 minute sessions at the Dar- Ul- Islam mosque in Elizabeth, NJ twice a week. For many participants, yoga was a new experience. The sessions were held during the brief time between dinner and the Taraweeh prayer (nightly prayer and meditation at the mosque). The practice of lying on their backs inhaling the scent of earthly incense and exhaling their daily stress away enabled some to report that they felt “reenergized and evenly distributed during Ramadan.” Many also reported that they felt mindful of what they were eating and how much they were eating, particularly on the nights they were practicing yoga. This was fascinating because the women were precisely practicing Ramadan’s objectives: to increase spiritual discipline and self-control.Yoga became the exercise that served as a reminder to what the bigger picture was. Ultimately, this is what these fasting women needed. A constant reminder of being mindful along with some exercise and/ or stretching. To measure the results of this study, participants participated in post-tests identical to the pre-tests. Stay tuned until next time to see the results.

Dr. Redmond: Dear Miserable, Being a chiro, I help people with migraines quite a bit. And actually, it’s not uncommon for people to get migraines when it’s really hot out. Or when it rains. Acupuncture: Beyond Pain and Arthritis by Karin Derfuss, DVM, CVA

T

he ancient art of Acupuncture is thousands of years old and has been used to treat almost any type of ailment known to man. The Chinese, as well as other cultures, used acupuncture as an inexpensive way to treat large populations of people as well as animals. The acupuncture system consists of over 300 acupuncture points aligned in is a series of Meridians, or channels, that flow from head to hands and feet (or paws and hooves), as well as internally. There are 12 regular plus 3 extraordinary acupuncture channels corresponding to the organ systems within the body. Although we cannot exactly equate the Chinese organ system to our anatomical organs, there is ample evidence and case documentation that specific diseases and health problems can be resolved or improved with proper acupuncture treatment and point selection. Most commonly, people think of acupuncture as a hugely effective treatment for arthritis and pain. Acupuncture works to alleviate pain by relieving stagnation of blood (life fluid) or Qi (life force or energy). What does this mean? When the flow of blood or Qi is obstructed or blocked, it is like water hitting a dam. The accumulation of blood or Qi at this dam causes pain. Placing

needles, utilizing massage or Tui Na, as well as the use of Chinese herbal formulations can relieve this stagnation, thus relieving pain. Waking up achy or becoming stiff while sitting are prime examples of pain caused by stagnation. The pain frequently improves when the person begins to move their body. Stagnation can also be affected by the weather; dampness, heat or cold can all aggravate pain. Chinese medicine is based on balance and harmony. Disease is a lack of balance, or disharmony. There must be a balance of Yin (cooling, deep, fluid, dark – like an air conditioner), Yang (warming, more exterior, light – like a furnace or heater), Qi and blood. The lack of proper flow, balance and distribution are responsible for arthritis and pain as well as all other disease processes. The balance is a constantly

evolving and active process. Yin and Yang are always in flux as demonstrated in the famous black and while Tai Ji symbol. It can be said that one is predisposed to certain diseases based on one’s imbalances. It is believed that when blood or Qi flow is blocked, blood or phlegm accumulation will form a tumor. Additionally, inadequate blood flow to the skin can result in dry hair, fur or skin, fine powdery dandruff, itching and a tendency to allergic skin issues. Blood that accumulates in the liver can cause liver enlargement and improper function. A blood deficiency can cause an abnormally small liver and improper function. Diabetes mellitus is a deficiency of Yin causing increased thirst, increased urination and weight loss. Acupuncturists believe that heart disease can be caused by an imbalance of Yin, Yang or Qi. Examples like these are meant to demonstrate how Chinese medicine interprets disease. Once the imbalance is determined, proper acupuncture points can be selected to treat it. Acupuncture can improve organ function, alleviate symptoms of disease and improve quality of life by reducing the amount of medications needed and increasing the harmony within the body.

Spreading the Love Through the gift of therapeutic yoga, Kula for Karma brings compassion, hope, and healing to populations in need by Susan Bloom

O

nce considered an “alternative” therapy, a wealth of scientific research continues to confirm the benefits of yoga on reducing stress, elevating energy levels and mood, enhancing the quality of sleep, improving flexibility, and promoting the healing process for those suffering from a range of chronic illnesses. Understanding the power of this practice first-hand based on the positive impact it had on her own life, Geri Topfer founded Kula for Karma – named after the Sanskrit word for ‘community’ – in 2007 to extend the benefits of therapeutic yoga and meditation to people of all ages in need throughout the greater metropolitan area. She was soon joined by Kula for Karma Executive Director Penni Feiner on a journey that’s since touched thousands with a healing message of love and hope. We sat down with Topfer, 54, and Feiner, 63, to learn more about the spirituality behind their creation of Kula for Karma and how this groundbreaking, non-profit organization is positively impacting the many communities it serves. NA: Tell us about your background and what brought you to practice yoga.

24

Topfer: I worked in the publishing industry for many years, but when I had my three children I found it difficult to balance work and family. I began pursuing other interests, including acting classes, and the teacher recommended that I take yoga to help calm the anxiety I felt performing in front of people. When I first started yoga, I remember feeling like I’d come home – I loved the people, the music, and the philosophy. I threw myself into yoga classes of all styles and eventually took many teacher trainings. Feiner: I worked in the management of our family’s custom sheet metal fabrication business for over 30 years and was looking for a way to calm my overactive mind when a friend suggested yoga. Though I found it hard to relax at first, I kept attending and noticed that the stretches of calmness I felt in class lasted longer and longer; I was able to be still, centered, and mindful for the first time. My mind had always been filled with self-judgment and criticism and yoga really helped me to soften around that and love myself despite the imperfections. NA: Why did you launch Kula for

Somerset/Middlesex/Hunterdon Co. Edition

NaturalAwakeningsCNJ.com

Karma and who have you reached? Topfer: Though I was teaching, I felt I needed to be doing something more with my yoga, though I didn’t know what that would look like. Then a yoga teacher of mine described how she was helping children in Ecuador and I realized that there was a lot of work to be done right here in our own backyard. Feiner: Geri started the program by offering yoga to children at a studio in Bergen County once a week. I heard she was looking for volunteers to teach a group of teenage girls who had been abused and I volunteered to teach that class. We both recognized the power of yoga and how important it was to offer effective tools to these populations. After that, our programs blossomed as the name got out and the need was recognized. Today, we have over 600 volunteer yoga teachers in our network and currently have 50-60 active volunteers teaching 70+ programs for everyone from young children and at-risk teens, victims of domestic violence, and veterans struggling with PTSD to oncology and cardiology patients in greater metro area hospitals such as Hackensack, Englewood, Valley, Saint Barnabas, St. Joseph s, Mount Sinai, and Bellevue. We ll soon be launching programs at Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck, NYU Langone in New York City, and Yale New Haven Hospital in Connecticut. NA: What do your programs aim to do? Topfer: We provide a hopeful, heartfelt approach to creating community and a safe environment for people to be their most vulnerable selves while working to give them portable tools to manage pain, anxiety, depression, and trauma. The practice of therapeutic yoga really hits home on so many levels and is so important to the holistic integrative approach to healing. For us, it’s about love and the understanding that we’re all one thread away from the populations we’re serving. We’d ultimately love to bring our programs to operating rooms and medical schools to help physicians and surgeons be more mindful too. NA: Since launching Kula for Karma, has society become more open to yoga?

Feiner: Absolutely. At Hackensack Hospital, for example, our flagship and first hospital program, we used to offer therapeutic yoga to cancer patients in a small conference room and the class got more and more traction. When the hospital unveiled its beautiful new John Theurer Cancer Center in 2010, it featured a special yoga room, which reflects their recognition of the value of this practice to their patients. This remains one of our proudest achievements. Topfer: People are definitely looking for these integrative options and the medical profession is increasingly advocating for it – it’s the perfect storm. We hope to help make the practice of yoga even more mainstream so that one day it’s not considered ‘alternative,’ but just ‘healthcare.’ NA: How personally rewarding has Kula for Karma been for you? Feiner: I wake up every day inspired and challenged by the work that we do; it’s just magic. I feel so much joy and richness and fulfillment from reaching out to more populations and being part of creating a wave of wellness. Topfer: To be able to tap into your passion, turn it into action, create a platform for volunteerism, and make a difference in the lives of others is extraordinary, and I feel so lucky to have Penni as my partner and to be able to share something with someone who allows you to be your best self every day. Looking ahead, we hope to create greater awareness of the benefits of therapeutic yoga to integrative healthcare and to continue doing what we’re doing in a bigger, brighter way to reach even more people in need.

AGELESS BEING Staying Vibrant in Mind, Body and Spirit by Kathleen Barnes

Agelessness: Engaging in and experiencing life without fear of falling, failing or falling apart.

I

n a nutshell, that’s the philosophy of visionary women’s health expert Dr. Christiane Northrup, of Yarmouth, Maine, as explored in her latest book, Goddesses Never Age. “We’re long overdue for a paradigm shift about how we feel about growing older,” says Northrup. “You can change your future by adopting a new, ageless attitude that will help you flourish physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. We don’t have to buy into modern medicine’s promotion of the idea of the pathology of aging.” One of Northrup’s primary admonitions: “Don’t tell anyone how old you are. Another birthday means nothing.”

Maintain a Sound Mind

Our Western society fosters a belief system that we will become decrepit, frail and mentally feeble at a certain age. “When my mother turned 50, her mailbox suddenly filled with ads for adult diapers, walkers and long-term care 26

insurance,” Northrup quips. The point is well taken. Think vibrant, healthy, gorgeous and yes, sexy Sandra Bullock, Johnny Depp, Chris Rock and Brooke Shields—all 50 or older—as the targets of ads for Depend. We’re living and working longer, and many of us are feeling, looking and staying young longer. So is 60 the new 40? Yes, say State University of New York at Stony Brook researchers, and further note that we’re generally leading longer and healthier lives. Centenarians are the fastest-growing segment of the U.S. population. In the 2010 census, 53,364 people had surpassed their 100th year, an increase of 40 percent over the 1980 census, and more than 80 percent of them are women. The National Institute on Aging projects that this number could increase tenfold or more by 2050. What we think of as “old” has changed. Many baby boomers refuse to buy into the mythology of aging, bristle

at being called senior citizens and especially dislike being called elderly. Their position is backed by science. Stem cell biologist Bruce Lipton, Ph.D., author of Biology of Belief and currently a visiting professor at the New Zealand College of Chiropractic, in Auckland, is best known for promoting the concept that DNA can be changed by belief, for good or ill. Lipton explains that we all have billions of stem cells designed to repair or replace damaged—and aging—tissues and organs. “[These cells] are profoundly influenced by our thoughts and perceptions about the environment,” Lipton explains. “Hence our beliefs about aging can either interfere with or enhance stem cell function, causing our physiological regeneration or decline.” “Yes, we are destined to grow older, but decrepitude and what we call aging is an optional state,” Northrup adds. “Our genes, nutrition and environment are under our control far more than we may have thought.” More, she says, “Words are powerful. Don’t talk yourself into believing your brain is turning to mush just because you are over 40.”

Take Control of the Body

“Manage the four horsemen of the aging apocalypse,” encourages nutrition and longevity expert Jonny Bowden, Ph.D., a Los Angeles board-certified nutritionist and author of The Most Effective Ways to Live Longer. He says the aging process, including disease, loss of physical or mental function and the general breakdown of systems, is caused by one or more of four factors: oxidative damage (literally rusty cells); inflammation; glycation (excess sugar, metabolic syndrome); and stress. “Collectively, they damage cells and DNA, wear down organs and systems, deeply damage the vascular pathways that deliver blood and oxygen to the entire body, and even shrink brain size,” explains Bowden. While it may seem like a tall order to make lifestyle changes that vanquish these four horsemen, Bowden says they can be broken into manageable elements by employing an arsenal of healthful weapons: whole foods, nutrients, stress-reduction techniques, exercise, detoxification and relationship

improvement. “All of these actually do double duty, battling more than one of the four processes that can effectively shorten your life,” he reports, based on his 25 years of study.

Oxidative Damage

Consider what rust does to metal. That’s what free radical oxygen molecules do to cells. Over time, they damage them and cause aging from within. “Oxidative damage plays a major role in virtually every degenerative disease of aging, from Alzheimer’s to cancer to heart disease and diabetes, even immune dysfunction,” says Bowden. His recommended key to destroying free radicals is a diet rich in antioxidants, including lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and healthy fats, nuts, grassfed meats and organic dairy products. Avoid environmental free radicals that show up in toxic chemicals by eating as much organic food as possible and avidly avoiding residues of the poisonous pesticides and herbicides sprayed on crops eaten by people and livestock.

Inflammation

Long-term inflammation is a silent killer because it operates beneath the radar, often unnoticed, damaging blood vessel walls. Like oxidative damage, inflammation is a factor in all the degenerative diseases associated with aging, says Bowden. His suggestion: First, get a Creactive protein (CRP) test to determine the levels of inflammation in our body. A CRP level over 3 milligrams/liter indicates a high risk of a heart attack. Antiinflammatory foods like onions, garlic, leafy greens, tomatoes, beans, nuts and seeds have all been widely scientifically proven to reduce chronic inflammation.

Glycation

This is the result of excessive sugar that glues itself to protein or fat molecules, leaving a sticky mess that creates advanced glycation end (AGE) products that damage all body systems and are acknowledged culprits in the dreaded diseases associated with aging. Bowden’s basic answer is to minimize intake of sugar and simple carbs; anything made with white flour or white rice. Also avoid fried dishes and

any foods cooked at high temperatures that actually skip the glycation production in the body and deliver harmful AGEs directly from the food. He advises taking 1,000 mg of carnosine (available in health food stores) daily to prevent glycation.

Stress

The long-term effects of physical, mental or emotional stress are tremendously damaging to the human physiology. Sustained exposure to the stress hormone cortisol can shrink parts of the brain, damage blood vessels, increase blood sugar levels, heart rate and blood pressure and contribute to chronic inflammation, according to wellestablished science recorded in the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Bowden warns, “Stress management is not a luxury.” In its many forms, including prayer, meditation and breathing exercises, it should be part of any agelessness program. Deep, restful sleep is as vital a component as ending toxic relationships, having a nurturing circle of friends and doing familiar, gentle exercise such as yoga or tai chi. Overall, Bowden adds, “Rather than thinking of such endeavors as antiaging, I strive to embody the concept of age independence. I admire former Supreme Court Associate Justice John Paul Stevens, who resigned from the court when he reached age 90 because he wanted to play more tennis.” Bowden recommends embracing the concept of “squaring the curve”, meaning that instead of anticipating and experiencing a long downhill slope of poor health leading to death, “I look at a long plateau of health, with a steep drop-off at the end.” Wellness guru Dr. Michael Roizen, chair of the Cleveland Clinic’s Wellness Institute, contends that although our chronological age can’t be changed, “Your ‘real age’ [calculated from data he collected from 60 million people] is the result of a wide variety of factors that are within your control. Dietary choices alone can make you 13 years younger or older than your actual age.” Roizen adds uncontrolled portion sizes, tobacco use and physical inactivity to the list of life-shortening lifestyle options. 28

Align with Spirit

“If you don’t have some kind of spiritual foundation, literally, God help you,” says Northrup. “God isn’t confined to a book or a church, mosque or synagogue. Divinity is the creative loving, vital flow of life force that we’re all part of and connected to. Our bodies are exquisite expressions meant to embody, not deny our spirits.” Touch, pleasure and sex can be part of it, too. Individuals that have the most fulfilling sex lives live the longest, according to researchers conducting the University of California, Riverside’s Longevity Project. “Pleasure comes in infinite forms,” says Northrup. “It can mean the exquisite taste of a pear or the sound of an angelic symphony, the kiss of sun on skin, the laughter of a child, spending time with friends or creating a pastel landscape. SUPPLEMENTS 101: An Interview with Kirstin Nussgruber by Lana Dykes

C

ertified Holistic Nutritional Consultant Kirstin Nussgruber, and founder of Eat Holistic, is passionate about and has specialized in empowering her clients to adopt a whole foods approach to strengthen and support the body’s immune system from the inside out. A breast cancer survivor, she learned firsthand the importance of an integrative approach to one’s health, using the body, mind and soul to facilitate true healing. Recently we sat down with Kirstin to learn the basics about supplements. As you will see, she went far beyond the beginner level.

What are supplements? The word “supplement” has its roots in the Latin word “supplere” meaning to fill up or complete. Supplements add a benefit to your overall nutrition and sometimes this may be a missing link at a given time.

Are supplements necessary? Our overall diet today is generally far from complete in nutrient value, as we have replaced fresh whole foods with industrialized and processed food items. In addition, our modern and stressful lifestyle causes our bodies to often be nutrient deficient. So, in short, yes! But let’s be honest. Whether you are a dedicated, seasoned supplement-taker, or an “on-again-off-again” one, everyone has had moments of secretly doubting whether they really work, or whether you feel better while taking them. And if you are a newcomer to the supplement world, you’re probably confused about which ones to take. How do you choose? You find yourself wondering if you need 30mg of something or 5000IU of something else. I have been in your shoes. As you may know, I love delving into the mysteries and secrets of nutrition. Lifting the veil off supplements is no exception.

Do I need to take supplements all the time? Not necessarily. Consider these four things: 1. Figure out what you wish to achieve. Do you need immediate relief from say, a cold or allergies? Do you wish to target a more ongoing concern, like pre-menopausal issues? Do you want to follow a general maintenance protocol? 2. Our bodies have little storage “tanks” for various nutrients, often you may only need to supplement for a limited time to replenish these “tanks” so the body is able to run at full speed again. 3. I recommend having yourself checked out by an integrative physician and getting a micronutrient blood test to determine which nutrients you are deficient of. This way, you know exactly what you need to focus on under careful supervision. 4. If you are taking any chronic medication, you need to take care not to have your drugs interact negatively with your supplements. Your pharmacist can help you here, and so can I.

Which brand is a good quality? Generally speaking there are 3 types of supplement brands: professional- grade, health food store and integrative pharmacy-grade, and supermarket-grade. The difference is price, quality of content and strength or potency of ingredients. Suppliers of professional-grade supplements differentiate themselves by being able to make a single medical benefit claim based on the years of research they are involved in. The higher the potency, the more professional and individualized supervision is necessary. These supplements will only be administered through a physician’s or practitioner’s office, and are almost always guaranteed to be of highest quality. Pure ingredients mean optimal absorption rates. Supplements sold in health food or integrative pharmacies fall into the same category, the only difference being that the potencies of their supplements tend to be a little lower 30

Somerset/Middlesex/Hunterdon Co. Edition

NaturalAwakeningsCNJ.com

and can be offered to the public without careful personalized clinical supervision. You should make sure that the packaging ensures that the purity and potency of the product is guaranteed. Supplements need to be protected from light, heat (ideally under 80°F) and moisture. The expiration date should be visible. You can likely still use the product up to six months past the date, but be aware of any changes in color or smell.

What do you mean by “pure” ingredients and “optimal absorption” rates? Besides the actual nutrient, each supplement can contain a myriad of other ingredients commonly referred to as excipients, which include binders, fillers, lubricants, colorants, sweeteners, flavorings and coating materials. These can often cause allergic reactions or digestion issues. A high quality supplement will not only exclude most of the above ingredients, it will state on its label which excipients, if any, are included. Generally, a long list of excipients means the manufacturer is cutting costs for profit. However, not all excipients are bad. Excipients are needed during the manufacturing process to ensure a certain consistency. Bio-active excipients, such as fiber, seaweed and plant gums, may actually help to break down the product in the gut, maximize the absorption and work in synergy with the actual nutrient.

having the freedom to develop, create and innovate is critical.” Creativity isn’t limited to only younger children. How sports are taught in this country at all levels, right up through college, often inhibits athletic creativity and problem solving—as Levy has noticed year after year in the freshmen players she trains—rather than fostering these attributes.

A Better Alternative

Whole Child Sports Free Play Earns the Winning Score by Luis Fernando Llosa

M

any parents concerned that their children are getting engulfed by social media often turn to sports to spark physical activity. They scramble to sign their toddlers up for swimming and tennis lessons, T-ball and soccer practice, hoping these activities will teach their kids about motivation and leadership, while getting them off the couch and out the door. They hope that sports will be a conduit for their kids to learn what it takes to strive, drive toward a goal and succeed in later life. As a result, more than 40 million kids across America are engaged in organized play. But youth sports are not a panacea; while parental intentions are good, they sometimes don’t realize the potential for negative consequences. Those that have studied the phenomenon believe that youth sports—which on the surface, appear to provide a perfect environment for children to learn life lessons and develop critical social and physical skills—might hamper our children’s healthy physical, social, psychic and creative development.

Too Much Too Soon

It seems that many young kids playing on teams today are over-coached by controlling, command-oriented adults. As Jenny Levy, head coach of the University of North Carolina’s 2013 NCAA champion women’s lacrosse team at 32

Chapel Hill puts it, “Kids are kind of like overbred dogs, mimicking the drills we run in practice. They aren’t wired to think creatively. They do what they know. What’s safe.” This kind of behavior can start at an early age, when kids should be engaging in free play with minimal adult supervision in unstructured settings. Parenting expert Kim John Payne, author of Simplicity Parenting and The Soul of Discipline, says, “Parents are giving in to enormous societal pressure to push kids into high-performance sports settings several times a week. It’s an ‘arms race’ of sorts, with the clear victims being the kids themselves that are robbed of their childhoods.” There’s a much more holistic way kids can experience play, including sports. An American Academy of Pediatrics study attests that free and unstructured play is healthy and essential for helping children reach important social, emotional and cognitive developmental milestones, plus managing stress and becoming resilient. Payne observes, “In free play, children have to actively problem solve and take one another’s feelings into account if the play is to be successful. In sports, the social problem solving is largely extrinsic, facilitated by coaches, referees or parents. During a child’s formative stages, between the ages of 5 and 12,

It’s crucial to consider the whole child, not just the budding athlete. To revive a child’s imagination and create better conditions for developing creativity, resiliency and flexibility, contemplate the option of taking a child out of organized youth sports for a while to provide the time, space and opportunity to rediscover childhood play and games. Then support them in re-entering organized athletics when they’re a bit older and more physically and emotionally ready. Also, some kids that get heavily involved in highly structured youth sports too early may be prone to behavioral problems and serious physical injuries. The best thing a parent can do for a young child that is active and interested in sports is roll up their sleeves and join in unscripted backyard or playground family play. Kids thrive in the attention offered from mom or dad, regardless of parental athletic skill levels. Also, organize play dates with other neighborhood kids of varying ages, because they love to learn from each other, including how to work out disagreements. Once kids are socially, emotionally and physically ready, organized sports can be an amazing platform for funfilled learning. Having already experienced healthy free play, a child will be ready for and thrive in a more focused, competitive, organized and structured play environment. Fortified by a creative foundation in earlier years, a youngster is better able to identify and express their own mind, body and spirit. Luis Fernando Llosa is the co-author of Beyond Winning: Smart Parenting in a Toxic Sports Environment and co-founder of WholeChildSports.com. A writer, speaker and former Sports Illustrated reporter, he lives in New York City, where he coaches his five kids. LuisFernandoLlosa.com.

Lessons in Sustainability

The Gladstone-based Willow School’s new Health, Wellness & Nutrition Center sets a new standard in green design and education

by Susan Bloom

A

s New Jersey’s nearly 1.4 million K-12 students head back to school this month, many will encounter aging public school buildings that incorporate poorly ventilated, airtight designs, inefficient lighting, outdated vinyl flooring maintained with a bevy of potentially noxious cleaning agents, and other unhealthy building materials. For the 120 pre-K through eighth grade students of the Willow School in Gladstone, however, the return back to school will offer a completely different experience one that sets a new benchmark in environmental appreciation, responsibility, and sustainability. Thirteen years ago, the Willow School became the first school in the U.S. to build a USGBC LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Gold-certified building and followed up with an even more elite LEED Platinum building for its second school construction project, the Barn, in 2007. This past April, the school unveiled its newest achievement in sustainable

construction -- a 20,000 square-foot Health, Wellness & Nutrition Center designed to the stringent standards of the Living Building Challenge, which requires that a building produces more electricity than it uses, harvests more water than it consumes such that it replenishes the local aquifer, and generates no waste that’s not recycled for other purposes. In other words, a building that truly acts like a tree.

A “Net Positive” Experience

Amid sun-filled spaces that provide ample views of the bucolic property’s

rolling hills, “this is a ‘net positive’ facility that runs on the sun’s energy, a building in which we’ve looked at every nut, bolt, and screw under a microscope to ensure that there are no toxic materials incorporated in its construction,” said Willow School co-founder Mark Biedron of the new Center, which features commercial and teaching kitchens, a dining room, performance arts space, a health/wellness area, an energy gallery, four middle school classrooms, 10,000 square feet of outdoor agricultural gardens and composting areas, and regenerative native landscaping. Every occupiable room in this building has views to the outside, the construction features natural materials such as wood, stone, and products made out of plants, an extensive array of skylights allow lots of natural light, and the building s indoor air quality is incredibly pure thanks to the lack of toxic materials and the incorporation of a natural ventilation system, Biedron said. In addition to delivering the traditional core curriculum that every student needs, we re interested

in teaching children and adults how the planet works and connecting the educational curriculum to the ecosystem.” The result? “Using the school s founding principles of celebrating the joy and wonder of learning while pursuing academic excellence, promoting mastery of the English language as the basis for communication and collaboration, and embracing a strong virtues program, which models both ethical relationships between people as well as between people and the natural systems that support them,” Biedron said, “the school delivers a strong academic program while incorporating a progressive model of education where children can learn the skills and habits of mind that will ensure their success in today s everchanging, information-rich world.” The Center s other claims are equally impressive. The $7.5 million structure uses natural daylighting, 100% renewable solar electric power from a rooftop photovoltaic array to produce over 75,000 more kWh of electricity annually than it uses, and captures, treats, and utilizes rainwater in the building to flush toilets and for

irrigation, all helping to reduce energy consumption. In addition, the facility’s Energy Gallery displays a real-time energy monitoring system for tracking rain water harvesting as well as solar energy production and usage, allowing students to participate in and learn from the process, and has also integrated ‘Garden to Table’ culinary instruction into the curriculum within the school’s expansive teaching kitchen and agricultural gardens.

A Biophilic Response

The theory of biophilia suggests that humans naturally want to connect to other human beings but also want to connect with nature, because this gives us life and makes us feel good inside -- we have a biophilic reaction when we connect to nature, Biedron explained. At the Willow School, it feels really great for both children and teachers to be in these buildings, and studies show that improvements in test scores and behaviors are also linked to this connection. In natural environments like these which bridge us to our place, children learn in a much deeper way.”

Currently representing one of the most environmentally sound and sustainable building projects in the world and gearing up for official Living Building Challenge certification following one full year of occupancy in 2016, the Willow School’s new Health, Wellness & Nutrition Center stands as a triumph in modern construction and a new model learning environment for students. It s our responsibility to understand and appreciate how the planet works and to operate in alignment with nature, Biedron concluded. Connecting education to nature is critical and this building evokes a sense of wonder and beauty. In both strong and subtle ways, we ve connected the lesson plan to sustainability in a nature-centered curriculum that exceeds the current traditional educational standard.”

recent Harris Interactive poll indicates that only one in three Americans are happy. Success, education and increases in annual household income create only marginally more happiness. So what will it take to go the distance? Inspiration for a Woman’s Soul: Choosing Happiness endeavors to discover just that. Its collection of intimate stories from more than two dozen women reveals telling insights— most profoundly, that happiness is a choice that anyone can make, regardless of their history or circumstances. Four tips from contributors to the book show how we all can rise up out of our troubles to the other side, shining.

Let Go of ‘Supposed To’

Family, friends and society exert pressure on us to achieve certain goals or impose their definition of success. When our soul doesn’t fit the mold, exciting things can happen. Happiness strategist Kristi Ling seemed to have it all: a high-powered job in Hollywood, significant income and the envy of all her friends—but her success felt empty. She writes from her home in Los Angeles, “Each morning I’d get up thinking about who I needed to please, and then prepare myself to exist for another day. I looked and felt exhausted just about all the time. The worst part was that I thought I was doing everything right!” After a middle-of-the-night epiphany, Ling left her job and set out to discover what her heart wanted. She began following a completely different life path as a coach and healer, in which success means manifesting joy.

things could have been different, we often forget to pay attention to what we have right now. Boni Lonnsburry, a conscious creation expert and founder/CEO of Inner Art, Inc., in Boulder, Colorado, writes about the morning she decided to choose happiness, despite the enormous challenges she was facing, including divorce, foreclosure, bankruptcy and possible homelessness. “I thought to myself, ‘Yes, my life could be better, but it also could be a hell of a lot worse. I’m healthy and smart—why, I even have some wisdom. Why am I focusing on how terrible everything is?’” Using the power of her choice to be happy right now, Lonnsburry not only found joy amidst the adversity, but created love and success beyond her wildest dreams.

Let Love In

We all want to feel loved, but when we’re afraid of getting hurt, we put up barriers to protect ourselves, even against the love we want. Certified Relationship Coach Stacey Martino, of Yardley, Pennsylvania, writes, “From the first day we met, I’d been waiting for [my boyfriend] Paul to end our relationship. I begged him for another chance—not for our relationship, but to be my authentic self—to figure out who I am and show up in our relationship as the real me.” Fourteen years later, Martino and her boyfriend, now husband, are still exploring the depths of their love for one another. For them, the choice to be vulnerable was the gateway to happiness.

Look Inward Instead of to Others

If we can’t own our pain, how can we create our joy? Choosing happiness means taking full responsibility for our state of mind, with no excuses. Lisa Marie Rosati, of Kings Park, New York, who today helps other women catalyze their own transformation, writes: “I didn’t want to accept what was going on inside [me], so I looked outside for a way to make things better. I depended on intimate relationships to complete me, and on friends and acquaintances for entertainment. My self-esteem floated on incoming compliments and I absolutely never wanted to spend a minute alone with my own thoughts, lest they erode whatever happiness I possessed at the moment. I was exhausted, frustrated and quite frankly, pissed off.” It took a flash of insight to set Rosati free of her patterns of blame—and then realizing she could create her own fulfillment was all it took to catapult her into a place of empowerment. Look out, world! As Los Angeles happiness expert and Positive Psychology Coach Lisa Cypers Kamen says, “Happiness is an inside job.” Joy, love and inspired living are ours for the taking—all we must do is choose. The global community of couchsurfers, now 10 million strong, considers strangers “friends you haven’t met yet.” They currently are hosting and organizing more than half-a-million events in more than 200,000 cities worldwide this year. The aim is to make travel easier and more affordable, build people’s faith and trust in one another and create meaningful connections across cultures. It’s easy to become a member by creating a profile as a host and/or a traveler, which includes verified identification. Guests don’t need to reciprocate by hosting or leaving gifts, although lasting friendships are a common result. Hosts and guests are encouraged to leave honest reviews for each other, which helps ensure ongoing safety and good behavior all around. Meanwhile, non-members also are welcome to explore couchsurfing events in their city. Fun opportunities to make new connections include weekly language exchanges, skill swaps, outdoor activities and potlucks. “For me, it’s undeniably about the community, the kind of person it tends to attract,” says Joseph Abrahamson, a couchsurfer in his mid-20s. “A room full of couchsurfers is full of stories and listening and sharing and trust. It changes a person in a positive way… people that travel like this for long enough can no longer survive with closed minds.” Lisa Rosinky is a freelance writer in Boston.
