End Of Life Doulas Help Leave a Legacy
J
oan Law, owner of Feng Shui Joan’s Way in Stratford, is proud to announce that she has earned a Proficiency Badge from the National End-of-Life Doula Alliance (NEDA). End of Life Doulas provide emotional and spiritual support at an intensely personal time in an individual’s life. They assist people (and their loved ones) in finding meaning, creating a legacy project and planning for how the Joan Law last days of their lives will unfold. “Much of the Feng Shui work I do is clutter-clearing/downsizing for widows and widowers. As a natural progression of my work to help others manage life’s yin and yang, this new certification allows me to further assist people in a positive way,” explains Law. The task of “letting go of ” or “re-imagining” sentimental things can be daunting. An important part of end-of-life planning can include work on a “Legacy Project”. The art of Feng Shui is about managing environments with intention. End-of-life planning is similar. It’s about creating an energy and environment around the process of death with intention. Knowing what/who we or a loved one wants around them as they transition and how possessions are to be retained and remembered can be a meaningful exercise. A Legacy Project is created to honor our life story. It is a physical reminder of who we are and the life we’ve lived, a gift to family and a treasure to cherish. Examples include memory books, letters, video/audio recordings, crafting favorite objects/clothing into keepsakes and more. For more information, visit FengShuiJoansWay.com. See ad, page 13.
he AmpCoil system is a cutting-edge, intelligently designed wellness tool that supports physical, emotional and mental well-being. The AmpCoil utilizes sound frequencies delivered through a pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) to help our cells entrain to their natural frequency. If we imagine the mind-body system as an orchestra, AmpCoil helps to bring all of the different instruments (our cells, organs, neurons, etc.) into tune, so that our entire bio-energetic orchestra can resonate in harmony. Over 90 percent of the most active AmpCoil users report that their AmpCoil system has been instrumental in their wellness journey, and many users report improvement in their experience of symptoms associated with Lyme disease and other chronic ailments, as well as increased mental, physical and spiritual well-being. BetterGuide, AmpCoil’s proprietary software platform, includes a portfolio of pre-programmed journeys that take the guesswork out of sound/frequency delivery. BetterGuide offers a wide range of journeys. Some are focused and specific in nature, while others are more general, supporting sleep, menstrual cycles, brain and immune health and the overall bioenergetics of the body. The heart of AmpCoil rests in their extended, supportive community of Ambassadors, many of whom have had life-changing experiences with AmpCoil and have been trained to share the technology with others. Many AmpCoil Ambassadors offer free first-time demo sessions and they encourage anyone who is interested to reach out to AmpCoil directly (833-267-2645) to be connected with an Ambassador in the area. There really is no substitute for directly experiencing the AmpCoil. For more information, call 833-267-2645 or visit AmpCoil.com. See ad, page 2.

Subconscious Transformation with Universal Intelligence
A
t Universal Intelligence, LLC, Althea works with the subconscious mind and the power it has. As a Registered State of Connecticut Hypnotist and Credentialed Professional Coach, Althea uses many modalities to accomplish clients’ goals and help them get to the way they want to feel. Transformations happen by becoming unstuck and arriving at clarAlthea ity. The subconscious is a warehouse of all our experiences, perceptions, values, memories and programing—whether remembered or not. It is responsible for our reactions, decisions and our relation to others, our health, our emotional feelings, choices and our way of being in the world. Often we’d like to behave differently, think differently than we do, make different choices other than the same repeated ones. But we become stuck after trying everything to overcome that which we’d like to change. Exploring the subconscious, it is possible for new programming to become default programming to that which accomplishes our goals and releases us from past defeating patterns, self-doubts and sabotaging thoughts. Through the subconscious, we are able to let go of fears and indecision by examining our beliefs and uncovering and understanding their origins. Our bodies and minds all have cell memory which can continue to replicate our thoughts, even if unpleasant and unwanted. We can change this cell memory to that which serves our best good by reprogramming and exploring the resources of our subconscious. For more information and a free consultation, call 203-451-3383. See ad, page 8.

Ease Anxiety through Mindfulness Online
I
n an effort to ease the mental health challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, and to reach community members in the safety of their homes, the Community Mindfulness Project (CMP) shifted their in-person mindfulness programming to online and call-in options. Mindfulness and meditation programs that were once held at local libraries and parks have been available seven days a week for the past year via Zoom and Conference call. Current schedule is available at CommunityMindfulnessProject.org. Elevated levels of stress and anxiety in the community have driven people to search for various types of intervention and support. The mindfulness programs offered through CMP are free of charge and open to the public via these distance options, and help people support their physical, psychological, emotional and social well-being. Various types of mindfulness and meditation are offered through the organization, each with its own method for providing respite, and all of them based on neuroscience. A well-known Mountain Meditation provides examples of steadiness and strength during uncertain times, whereas a Body-Scan Meditation provides an experience of allowing everything to be exactly as it is, without wishing to change it. Alongside The New Canaan Land Trust and Let’s Talk About It New Canaan, CMP will host a Forest Bathing event at the Browne Preserve in New Canaan, at 10am on July 13. The Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku, which translates to “forest bathing’”, is the medicine of simply being in the forest. It is a researchbased framework for supporting healing and wellness. The event costs $5 and all ages and abilities are welcome. For more information and to register for the Forest Bathing event, visit CommunityMindfulnessProject.org.

Healthy Food and Beverage Zones Featured at Health Wellness & Lifestyle Expo
T
he 10th Annual Health Wellness & Lifestyle Expo 2021, with special thanks to Stamford Health, Exclusive Healthcare Partner, returns to beautiful Harbor Point in Stamford, September 11 and 12, from 11am to 5pm. This year’s event is a motivator to “Revitalize, Reimagine, and Reenergize” our lives which have all been challenged this past year due to the pandemic. In addition to the Expo’s 85 inspiring and educational exhibitors, on-site health screenings, free group fitness classes, pet and kids zones and a high-energy dance exercise experience with Dance it Out creator Billy Blanks Jr, returning to the Expo this year is the popular Healthy Food, Restaurants and Beverage Zone and the Eco-Friendly Wine, Spirits and Craft Beer Zone. Food feeds our soul and fuels our bodies. Consumers continue to become more conscious of what they put into their bodies. The public’s demand for better quality, organic, clean, sustainable and healthier food and beverage choices has sparked a whole new generation of products to come on the market that are easily attainable and enjoyable. Premiere event sponsor Grade A ShopRite will be on site with registered nutritionists providing healthy recipes and guidance on smart food choices when shopping for household groceries. According to Livestrong.com, a positive outcome during the pandemic saw households preparing more meals at home and taking a significant departure from fast food consumption and indulgent restaurant fare. Forty-four percent ate breakfast at home every day (compared to 33 percent pre-COVID), 31 percent ate lunch at home every day (compared to 18 percent pre-COVID) and 33 percent ate dinner at home every night (compared to 21 percent pre-COVID). With a shift back into a new normal, healthy food choices and food preparations are essential in maintaining the balance our bodies crave. Education and convenience remain a key factor in our healthy choices. Red meat has made a comeback on our tables with the accessibility to lean grass-fed beef choices. Whole grain breads continue to give white bread a run for its money with consumers opting for more nutrient and fiber rich varieties. Even our caffeinated and alcoholic beverages are being produced with healthier and more sustainable practices at the forefront. Expo attendees can look forward to a delicious boost from Healthy Food, Restaurants and Beverage Zone participant Rise Brewing Co. Their Nitro Cold Brew Coffee, the foundation for their nitrogen-infused cold brew coffee beverages, is made with purified water and organic beans, and only naturally occurring caffeine. Additional all-natural ingredients include dairy-free oat milk, organic cacao and Madagascar vanilla extract in their cold brew offerings. In addition to healthy snacks, local restaurants, premium spirits and eco-friendly wine offerings, Athletic Brewing will introduce their high-quality, allnatural craft non-alcoholic beers, a growing segment within the beverage industry.

Rock On

Volcanic Ground Cover Slows Climate Change Researchers are using recycled rock dust to enrich farm and rangeland soils to accelerate the processes by which soils capture atmospheric carbon. The natural process of rock weathering provides a proven method of capturing carbon from the atmosphere and putting it into the soil, where it may remain for centuries. Benjamin Z. Houlton, the Ronald P. Lynch Dean of the Cornell College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, says, “Soil can be part of the solution set. It will not save us, but it can help to put us on path to negative emissions.” Field testing has been conducted for a year with positive early findings. Iris Holzer, a Ph.D. student at the University of CaliforniaDavis, has seen a doubling of the rate of carbon capture in soils with rock amendments compared to soils without. Excess carbon speeds up the greenhouse effect, which causes rising temperatures and other challenges to global security, food production, economic growth, infrastructure and human and ecosystem health. Over a five-year period, crushed volcanic rock added to agricultural soils across the globe could remove 2.8 billion tons of carbon.

Dealers Align Behind Electric Cars Traditionally, auto dealerships have presented a skeptical and confusing experience for those seeking to purchase electric transportation. When Tesla launched the Model S electric sedan in 2012, it had to build its own stores to educate consumers about electric vehicles (EV) because dealers wouldn’t sell them in Texas or Michigan, for instance. The subsequent success of Tesla, Ford and GM EV models, along with a plan to stop selling new internal combustion cars by 2035 in California, have propelled the transition from fossil-fuel-powered vehicles. The American division of German automaker Volkswagen is delivering large quantities of their electric SUV ID.4 as part of a nationwide launch, with more than 650 dealers on board. U.S. CEO Scott Keogh reports that the goal is to have at least one vehicle initially at every VW dealer in America. He says, “We see the potential for EV sales to double this year. We’re optimistic that this is a turning point year for electric vehicles.”

Semaglutide: A Peptide for Weight Loss Semaglutide, a peptide which had originally been studied to help diabetics lose weight, is now being used to help those without diabetes lose weight as well. The actions of semaglutide include reducing appetite, in part by slowing gastric emptying. This improves control of eating and reduces food cravings. Its active ingredient is what is contained in the medication Ozentic, and it can be used in smaller doses by nondiabetics under a doctor’s supervision—ordering semaglutide through a compounding pharmacy. In the studies done on diabetic patients, it was also shown to reduce the occurrence of adverse cardiac events over a two-year period. Better blood sugar control was shown by a reduction of HbA1C levels, making this an ideal substance for overweight patients who are at higher risk of pre-diabetes. This peptide is self-administered in a subcutaneous injection on a once-per-week basis. For those skittish about giving themselves an injection, it is accomplished with a tiny needle just under the skin which is called a subcutaneous injection, done rather simply after inoffice instruction. After trying many diets unsuccessfully, people may find that Semaglutide gives them the metabolic advantage which finally results in successful weight loss, which they have never before been able to accomplish. Breast Pump Recycling
By Dmitry Lobanov on Shutterstock
Wondering what to do with an old breast pump? Contact a local electronics waste recycling facility to check if they will accept breast pumps. Remove batteries before sending it to an e-waste facility and recycle batteries separately. Homeless shelters, women’s organizations and domestic violence shelters might be able to use them, despite the risk of contamination from a used pump. Currently, Medela has a breast pump recycling program available online. Medela does not cover the cost of shipping nor does it provide a shipping label, but will take back used breast pump motors and power cords. The parts are then broken down and recycled by a third-party provider. Medela will provide a return label for the shipping address and tracking. Based on rules for plastic recycling in local towns or at the recycling center, breast pump parts may be recycled. Check the recycling code on these items: storage containers and caps, breast cups, tubing, filters, valves, connectors. Carry bags can be dropped off at textile recycling facilities. The cleaning brush typically will be disposed of in the trash. Facilitating Creativity and Connection in Ridgefield by Michelle Bense

uring a year that held so much isolation and anxiety, Marge Courtney, owner of Touch of Sedona, built upon her legacy of bringing community together by opening an artistic haven next door: Sedona Art. A new age trading post for art supplies, creativity and more, Sedona Art is a continuation of Courtney’s vision of building stronger connections between business and community. For nearly 25 years, Touch of Sedona has been a Ridgefield destination for Native American art and other unique spiritual items. Recently, Ridgefield was named the first municipality in the state of Connecticut to have a designated Cultural District. The timing couldn’t be better for the launch of Sedona Art, especially when so many people are seeking connection and a creative outlet. “For centuries, people have come together to share with one another and connect in the process of trading goods and services,” says Susan Ahlstrom, Expressive Arts Counselor and Development Coach at Sedona Art. “The world is in a period of transformation around how we do business and interact with one another. So many people now shop online for products and services, but something is definitely lost when the task of ‘trading’ and commerce is done over the internet.” These two businesses, Touch of Sedona and Sedona Art, offer a place for the buying and selling of goods (crystals, singing bowls, Native American art, art supplies) and services (classes, intuitive readings, expressive arts coaching), as well as providing a space for sharing ideas and personal experiences on multiple levels. “Sedona Art serves artists and creatives of all types and helps nurture the heart and soul of the Ridgefield community and beyond,” says Ahlstrom. Since moving to Ridgefield over 20 years ago, Ahlstrom had been a customer of Court16

The two got to know one another better while Ahlstrom was Executive Director of the Ridgefield Chamber of Commerce. “When she needed help executing her vision of opening an art supply store in support of artists and the expressive arts, Spirit brought us together,” explains Ahlstrom. “We share a belief in the healing power of nature, art and Spirit. We value collaboration and understand the important role local businesses play in building community.” Walking into Sedona Art is “like walking into a candy store”, in the words of Ahlstrom. Filled with light and color, it is a comfortable, feel-good place. “Everyone who enters, whether aged 2 or 82, shares the same reaction: ‘It feels so good in here.’ We believe that everyone is an artist and the store elicits a positive emotional response. Both stores invite the creative spirit to come forth,” she says. Ahlstrom has often heard comments like, “I love to draw,” or, “I just started painting during COVID”. The store is a creative community that invites people “to be vulnerable and share their passion,” Ahlstrom says. “It’s a passion place, for sure.” Sedona Art offers classes and workshops that range from Art 101 to exploration with Intuitive Art. One recent workshop was led by store manager and local artist, Lily Fertik, inspired by the Sagittarius Full Moon. “Pink and purple were the colors of this fiery full moon sign, but the evening
Marge Courtney, Touch of Sedona and Sedona Art Owner; Martha Talburt, Ridgefield Artist; and Susan Ahlstrom was all about finding your center, connecting with color and expressing your creativity in a calm and relaxing space,” explains Ahlstrom. “Participants were guided through an opening meditation and encouraged to paint, move, explore and expand. They left feeling relaxed and inspired.” In the coming months, Sedona Art will be expanding their one-to-one instruction, art classes and workshops focused on the expressive arts, including more “healing” arts programs. A Sedona Art Loyalty Program is also launching, which will give discounts and incentives to members. Customers have found truth and healing in the creative arts facilitated by Sedona Art. “We are all in need of emotional healing after the year we’ve just had,” Ahlstrom shares. “The level of fear
and trauma that we’ve all experienced can be processed and released through the expressive arts. There’s nothing better than an hour or two lost in a creative project. Ahlstrom says, “We want to give people the means to find joy and, if possible, express themselves and share that joy with others.” Sedona Art is located at 450 Main St, Ridgefield. Hilda Demirjian Shares Green Apple ‘Fountain of Youth’
W
hen Hilda Demirjian moved to the U.S. 37 years ago, she was surprised to learn that many Americans regularly tanned as a beauty and wellness practice. Having grown up in the Persian culture, where healthy skin was prized and going to hammams (spas) with her mother and grandmother was a weekly routine, Demirjian found the idea of purposely subjecting the skin to sun damage shocking. She was determined to teach people to love their skin. “I knew I could educate people about how to take care of the largest organ in the body,” Demirjian says. So, after working with surgical lasers for a gynecologist, she switched to aesthetic lasers and opened Demirjian Salons, in White Plains, 24 years ago. She changed the name to Demirjian Laser and Skin Care Center as she expanded her services—not just helping clients practice preventive skin care, but also helping improve the appearance of their damaged skin through a growing menu of natural, noninvasive treatments. “I tell every client, ‘Love your skin’,” she says. “I share my story and then evaluate their skin, letting them know what needs to be taken care of so they can enjoy their life confidently.” Demirjian Laser and Skin Care Center offers men and women collagen treatment for younger-looking skin; treatment to improve the appearance of acne, scars and stretch marks; and treatment of hyperpigmentation (dark spots) on the face due to exposure to UVA and UVB rays. All these treatments are performed via laser, which is FDA approved for all complexions, Demirjian says. All skincare products used and sold at Demirjian Laser and Skin Care Center are botanical, non-comedogenic and cruelty-free, and come in recyclable packaging. 18

Demirjian says she’s particularly proud of an antioxidant product she created after several years of research and travel: Collagen-Elastin Gel with Green Apple Stem Cells from Switzerland. Green apple stem cells have the ability of self-renewal and can transform themselves into other cell types of the same tissue. Proven to diminish the signs of aging, they protect human skin cells. While anyone can use it to reduce fine lines, wrinkles, scars, stretch marks and hyperpigmentation, Demirjian says, it’s therapeutic for cancer survivors and people whose skin has been damaged by cancer treatment. “I lost my grandmother to breast cancer when I was 12, and I used to go with her for chemotherapy. Seeing her thin, purple, prematurely damaged skin made me sad,” she says. “I always wanted to create a product to heal the skin.” Collagen-Elastin Gel with Green Apple Stem Cells is an innovative formula derived from botanical sources that actively stimulates the growth of the protein collagen in the epidermis. Currently referred to as the “Fountain of Youth”, 0.1 percent of apple stem cell extract could stimulate 80 percent of human cells and tighten skin on the face, neck and body. The gel is available for purchase on Amazon.com and at HildaDemirjianSkincare.com. Running a small business for 24 years, while staying consistent with her mission and passion, has been a challenge, Demirjian says. “I am still in business thanks to our loyal, amazing clients who have put their trust in my hands,” she says. The clients have kept coming even during the past trying year, during which Demirjian has stayed “extremely busy”. “They know they can enter our establishment and not worry about COVID,” she says. “We are taking safety precautions until the pandemic is over. I am looking forward to attending my international seminars sometime soon.” Hilda Demirjian Laser and Skin Care Center is located at 34 S Broadway, Ste 607, White Plains, NY. FOOD AS MEDICINE The Healing Power of Nutrition
ating is a basic need, but many Americans are not filling this need with healthful choices. Among the more than 700,000 Americans that die each year from heart disease, stroke or Type 2 diabetes, about 45 percent eat meals heavy in salt, processed meat and sugary drinks, and low in fruits, vegetables, fish and nuts, according to a March 2017 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association. “I fully understand and empathize with people in the public,” says T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D., author of the groundbreaking The China Study and founder of the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies, in Ithaca, New York. Campbell has often stressed that public and professional understanding of nutrition is lacking. The problems with the Standard American Diet (SAD) start with the very ground it is grown in. Large-scale farming in the U.S. has depleted the soil, producing lower nutrient foods. In addition, many foods are processed by manufacturers to improve shelf life, which further destroys nutrients and requires toxic additives. “The default choice, the easy choice, is the inexpensive, highly processed food. Our built environment throughout the country has made it easier to find fast food than a produce store,” says Lisa McDowell, director of lifestyle medicine and clinical nutrition at Saint Joseph Mercy Health System, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. SAD is a primary risk factor for high blood pressure, abnormal blood lipids, increased blood glucose and weight gain, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). These intermediate conditions can lead to full-blown chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes, all of which are on the rise. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that
60 percent of American adults have at least one chronic disease and 40 percent have two or more, making chronic disease the leading cause of death and disability in the country. The good news from WHO is that up to 80 percent of heart disease cases, 90 percent of Type 2 diabetes cases and one-third of cancer incidences could be avoided by a healthier diet, as well as lifestyle changes like stopping smoking and increasing physical activity. A healthy diet is not as simple as cutting out convenience foods, because many people literally can’t stop eating them. Studies have compared the addictive properties of added sugar and salt to those of nicotine and cocaine. “Additives like sugar release opioids and dopamine in the brain. The same neurochemical changes in the brain occur in addictions,” says Claire Stagg, DDS, founder of Health Connections Dentistry, in Indian Harbour Beach, Florida, and author of Smile! It’s All Connected, a layperson’s guide that explains the essential connections between the mouth and overall wellness. “People need to be educated, or re-educated, to take ownership of their health by remembering the basic premise that their bodies can be healthy if they get the right nutrients to facilitate and support that basic process.” Campbell agrees that more people need to be educated. A major theme in his latest book, The Future of Nutrition, is how to sift through the conflicting information that exists. prostock-studio/AdobeStock.com

Healthier Helpings As the food industry continues to woo Americans with fast and easy processed foods, there are consumer shifts taking place. “About a quarter of U.S. adults are trying to manage a health or medical condition by making healthy food and beverage choices,” July 2021 19
stated the NPD Group consumer research firm in 2019. “Younger adults, ages 18 to 24, are particularly interested in using foods to improve their health.” It turns out that it’s most beneficial to focus on adding what is needed for optimal health, instead of worrying about what to eliminate. As William Li, M.D., counsels in Eat to Beat Disease, “Human nature abhors deprivation.” As president of the Angiogenesis Foundation, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Li advises us to “practice health care at home every day in our own kitchens.” He suggests frequently eating such simple, but disease-defying foods as dark chocolate, walnuts, kiwis, sourdough bread and sauerkraut. “I recommend participating in bigger box stores. They do a great job at making high-quality food available at an inexpensive price,” says McDowell. She also suggests batch cooking and planning meals ahead for the week.
For treatment, reversal and prevention of chronic disease, the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, in Chesterfield, Missouri, recommends eating a primarily plant-based diet containing minimally processed vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds. Campbell says that moving to a 100 percent plant-based diet “and staying there for one to three months, provides an opportunity for virtually everyone to finally crave a salad on a regular basis. This is a place wherein people have little or no interest to backslide because their taste preferences have profoundly changed.” As plant-based eating gains momentum, there are more imitation meat products. These foods can be helpful to transition away from meat, but Campbell cautions, “They do not replace the whole plant-based foods, even though they are plant-based, because salt, sugar and added oil are usually added.”
The Power of Plants
Eating by the Colors
Plant-based eating is finally becoming mainstream, thanks in part to such eye-opening documentaries as Forks Over Knives, Earthlings, PlantPure Nation and Food, Inc. Research backs up the benefits. In a 2019 study in the Journal of the American Heart Association, Johns Hopkins researchers report that in a 30-year period, people eating a mostly plant-based diet were 32 percent less likely to die from a cardiovascular condition and 25 percent less likely to die from any cause. A 2017 report published in International Journal of Epidemiology suggests that fruits and vegetables are associated with a reduced risk of many chronic diseases and may protect against certain types of cancers.
Eating fruits and vegetables in a rainbow of vibrant colors ensures we get a variety of phytochemicals, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. The federal Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion recommends consuming two and one-half cups of vegetables and two cups of fruit each day. McDowell suggests including “deeply pigmented fruits and veggies in at least five different colors, so that you’re getting all of the micronutrients and they’re all working together.” Aim to include a couple different foods from each of the following color groups over a week’s time. Association (Heart.org), VeganEasy.org, Dr. Ranjan Chatterjee (DrChatterjee.com) and others. Apps such as Eat the Rainbow Food Journal, Eat Five and VegHunter also make vegetable and fruit intake easy to track. Green: Dark greens have cancer-blocking chemicals like allyl sulfides, lutein and indoles, which inhibit carcinogens. They also contain folate for healthy cells and calcium for stronger bones, muscles and heart regulation. Get plenty of asparagus, avocados, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, green tea, kale, kiwi, spinach and green herbs. Blue and purple: Anthocyanins wipe out free radicals, boost brain health and reduce inflammation. Resveratrol can delay cellular aging, protect the heart and reduce risk of some cancers. Add blueberries, blackberries, eggplant, elderberries, figs, grapes, plums, raisins, eggplant and purple cabbage. Red: Rich in lycopene, a potent scavenger of gene-damaging free radicals, red plants lower risk of certain cancers and boost heart, brain, eye and bone health. Try apples, beets, cherries, cranberries, raspberries, red peppers, tomatoes and watermelon. Yellow and orange: Contain vitamin C, hesperidin and carotenoids such as beta-carotene to inhibit tumors, protect eyes, detoxify the body, reduce inflammation and boost the immune system and heart health. Add apricots, bananas, cantaloupe, carrots, mango, oranges, pineapple, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, tangerines and yellow peppers. White and brown: The onion family contains allicin and beta glucans, which have anti-tumor properties and can help lower cholesterol. Nuts contain healthy fats. Other foods in this group contain blood pressure-regulating potassium and antioxidant flavonoids like quercetin and kaempferol, along with digestion-boosting fiber. Choose beans, cauliflower, garlic, leeks, mushrooms, nuts, onions, parsnips and whole grains.
Gaining Gut Health The gut contains the organs that make up the digestive tract and the gut microbiome, a balance of microorganisms that survive on food. A healthy gut can prevent and heal illnesses in the digestive tract, immune system, cardiovascular system, kidneys and brain. If the gut is burdened with unhealthy foods and digestion is impeded, illness may arise. However, shifting to healthier, plantbased foods can cause a measurable shift in the gut microbiome in three to four days, Duke University researchers report in Nature. Gut health can be enhanced and restored with specific foods: Enzymes to break down food are found in raw fruits, vegetables, sprouts, nuts and fresh herbs, and can be destroyed by cooking or processing. These work before the body’s digestive enzymes kick in to improve digestion, eliminate toxins and boost energy. Studies have shown that raw plants also help with weight loss, decreasing cholesterol and reducing inflammation. Probiotics, live bacteria that promote healthy gut flora, are found in fermented foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, sourdough
bread, yogurt, kefir, pickles, miso and cheddar cheese. Prebiotics, undigestible natural fibers that feed probiotics, abound in apples, asparagus, bananas, barley, burdock root, dandelion greens, flaxseeds, garlic, oats and onions.
Going Local
Whole foods grown locally provide the most nutrition. Michael Pollan, professor of science and environmental journalism at the University of California, Berkeley, and author of In Defense of Food, famously said, “Don’t eat anything your great grandmother wouldn’t recognize as food.” Buying, preparing and eating whole foods may seem laborious at first, but the shift away from “easy foods” can quickly become a way of life as the body begins to feel better. “We hear stories every week about people who have fixed health issues from eating healthy,” says Brock Hall, owner of the Florida Fields to Forks organic community supported agriculture (CSA) farm in Malabar, Florida. He adds that everyone “ought to get closer to your food” by growing it or getting to know organic farmers at local markets, self-pick operations or through CSAs. Healthy eating is about balance. Enjoy comfort foods occasionally, focusing on the bigger picture of more healthful foods overall. Julie Peterson has contributed to Natural Awakenings for more than a decade. Eating Right for Our Dosha An Ayurvedic Perspective by Neha Kaushik
I
n the ancient healing medicine system of Ayurveda, our body constitution (dosha) is based on the five elements— earth, water, fire, space and air. These elements combine to form three doshas— Vata, Pitta, Kapha—which are present in each person in unique combinations. A dosha-specific diet nurtures this unique combination and creates a state of balance in mind, body and spirit and therefore a step toward our optimal health. It can aid in boosting energy, immunity, cognition and metabolism. Eating according to our dosha means eating foods that are opposite to the characteristics of the elements of our particular type, so that a balance of all three doshas is maintained—thereby creating
harmony and equilibrium. Making small but significant changes to our diet can give us more control of our health.
Eating According to the Vata Dosha
Vata individuals are a combination of space and air and would benefit from foods that provide lubrication and moisture for this dry constitution. Freshly cooked, warm foods would help to balance this dosha. Warming spices such as cinnamon, ginger, cumin, turmeric and nutmeg are great. However, any extremely hot spice like chili or cayenne pepper should be avoided as they can cause excess dryness. A generous amount of high-quality ghee

(clarified butter) or olive or sesame oils should be incorporated daily for lubrication. Vata types should choose foods that are naturally sweet, sour and salty and avoid foods that are bitter, astringent, pungent and cooling. Due to their airy constitution, dry and light foods such as popcorn and crackers and raw foods including salads should be avoided. Highly processed foods, deep fried foods or anything that contains refined sugar or corn syrup should be avoided as well since these will aggravate vata. Warm turmeric milk should be consumed daily. Recommended foods to balance Vata: • Sweet or dried fruits such as bananas, coconuts, apples, figs, grapefruits, grapes, mangos, melons, oranges, papayas, peaches, pineapples, berries, apricots and avocados. • Cooked vegetables in small quantities, such as asparagus, red beets, carrots, celery, sweet potatoes, garlic, onions, radish, watercress, zucchini, spinach, sprouts and tomatoes. • Dairy items such as soy milk, fresh milk, yogurt, soft cheeses, sour cream and tofu as a substitute. • Grains such as boiled oats, wild rice, quinoa, wheat and red lentils. • Meats and eggs such as omelets, fish, chicken and other white meat.
Eating According to the Pitta Dosha
Pitta individuals are a combination of fire and water and would benefit from foods that are cooling. Freshly cooked, whole raw foods would bring balance to this dosha. Cooling herbs and spices such as cilantro, coriander, fennel and cardamom are best. A moderate amount of high-quality olive, sunflower and coconut oils or ghee should be incorporated daily as this would prevent aggravation of pitta. Pitta types should choose foods that are naturally sweet, bitter and astringent and avoid foods that are pungent, sour, salty, spicy (like chili) and warming (such as cayenne peppers). Red meat should be avoided, as well as anything deep fried or highly processed. Recommended foods to balance Pitta: • Sweet fruits such as apples, avocados, coconuts, figs, melons, oranges, pears, plums, pomegranates, watermelon and mangos. • Sweet and bitter vegetables such as asparagus, cabbage, cucumber, celery,
cauliflower, green beans, lettuce, peas, parsley, zucchini, sprouts, cress, chicory and mushrooms. • Dairy such as goat, soy and cow milk, cheese and tofu as a vegan substitute. • Grains such as barley, cooked oats, basmati or white rice and wheat.
Eating According to the Kapha Dosha
Kapha individuals are a combination of earth and water and would benefit from fresh cooked foods that are light, dry and warm. Warming spices like ginger, black pepper, cinnamon, cumin, chili, black and cayenne pepper and honey would help balance this dosha. A minimal amount of high-quality sesame, sunflower oil or ghee should be incorporated into the daily diet. Kapha types should choose foods that are pungent, bitter, astringent and warming, and avoid foods that are sweet, sour, salty and cooling. It is best to avoid any red meat, anything deep fried and anything containing refined sugar or corn syrup. Drinks that are room to warm temperature can be con-
sumed, but any cold or carbonated liquids or fruit juices should be avoided. Recommended foods to balance Kapha: • Fruits such as apples, berries, cherries, mangos, peaches, pears, lemons, limes and raisins. Dried fruits should be avoided. • Spicy and bitter vegetables such as red beets, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, eggplant, garlic, lettuce, onions, parsley, peas, radish, spinach, fennel and Brussels sprouts. • Grains in small quantities such as barley, corn, millet, oats and basmati or wild rice. • Meats such as chicken, turkey, rabbit; and dairy such as reduced-fat milk in small quantities. Alternative milk, like oat or almond, is preferable in general. Avoid fatty cheeses and curd. Sweet Slumber Natural Tips for Deep Sleep by Ronica O’Hara
A
good night’s sleep is a challenge for a growing number of Americans. Even before the pandemic, 35 percent of adults reported sleeping less than the recommended seven hours a night, and in a new survey by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, 56 percent said they were sleeping worse due to what’s termed “COVID-somnia”. Being sleep-deprived not only makes us crabby and accidentprone, but also raises our risk of obesity, depression, heart disease, dementia and a weakened immune system, studies show. Fortunately, we can stave off fretting about lack of sleep by adopting some simple, natural practices.
MUNCH SMARTLY ON SLEEP-INDUCING FOODS. Many experts advocate foregoing food two hours before sleeping. As another option, “sleep snacks”, is suggested by New York University adjunct nutrition professor Lisa Young. She says, “These are foods that contain natural substances that may help promote a good night’s sleep.” They include warm milk or turkey (tryptophan), tart cherries (melatonin), kiwi fruit (vitamin C and serotonin), bananas (potassium and magnesium) and nuts and seeds (magnesium). DON AMBER GLASSES OR AN EYE MASK TO BLOCK LIGHT. The blue light emitted by ordinary light bulbs and device screens prevents the pineal gland from releasing melatonin, the sleep-inducing hormone, which is why it’s wise to shut down electronic devices an hour before sleeping. If doing so isn’t easy, at least block the blue light by using amber or orange (not clear or yellow) glasses to restore melatonin production, advises former General Electric lighting researcher Richard Hansler, Ph.D., of Cleveland; he also advises replacing regular bedroom bulbs with only those that produce low levels of blue light. To encourage deep sleep, fully darken the bedroom or wear an eye mask: a Chinese study found wearing such an accessory along with earplugs significantly increases the restorative rapid eye movement (REM) stage of sleep. 24

GET A PATTERN GOING. “Keeping to the same routine will signal to the body and brain that it is time to wind down and prepare for sleep,” says Dallas nurse educator Jenna Liphart Rhoads. This means sticking to the same bedtime and awakening schedule, and doing quieting activities an hour or so before bed, such as stretching, meditating, drinking tea or journaling.
WRITE A TO-DO LIST TO CALM A RACING MIND. Baylor University researchers found that compared to people that journaled about what they had accomplished that day, those that spent five minutes writing a to-do list for the next day fell asleep nine minutes sooner—the same effect as taking a prescription medication. The more specific their list, the quicker the shut-eye. GET COZY WITH A WEIGHTED BLANKET AND SOCKS. Weighted blankets, ideally weighing about 10 percent of a person’s body weight, lead to better sleep and reduced fatigue, depression and anxiety, reports a Swedish study. Some are filled with natural ingredients like rice and cloves, and can be warmed in a microwave beforehand, providing a fragrant, swaddled feeling. Plus, Korean researchers found that wearing warm socks to bed helped subjects fall asleep about seven minutes sooner, sleep 32 minutes longer and experience fewer light awakenings.

TAKE A NATURAL SLEEP AID. Prescription sleeping pills for insomnia can produce dependency and additional unwelcome side effects such as grogginess, diarrhea, headaches and stomach pain. Natural choices without these drawbacks include melatonin, a pineal gland hormone that primes the body for sleep; small doses of 0.3 milligram (mg) to 1 mg work effectively by mirroring natural circadian levels, research shows. Half of U.S. adults are estimated to be deficient in magnesium, which relaxes muscles and increases levels of a neurotransmitter with calming effects; 500 mg is a common dose. Valerian (300 to 900 mg) has been found to improve sleep quality in women during menopause.

CHECK OUT HEALTH ISSUES TO GET TO THE ROOT. Apnea, thyroid conditions, anemia, menopausal hot flashes, heartburn, incontinence and depression can affect the quality and quantity of sleep, as can medications such as beta blockers, blood pressure medications, some antidepressants and decongestants. If anxiety or depression is causing tossing and turning, cognitive behavioral therapy has been shown to improve sleep in up to 70 to 80 percent of people with insomnia. Whether in-person, via Zoom or by email, even one or two sessions can lower insomnia symptoms, with six to eight sessions typically being more helpful.

The scents of ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome can still be used today to induce deep, restful slumber. “A scent of an essential oil reaches the brain within seconds and activates the hypothalamus, the hormonal control center. It then releases hormones promoting sleep,” says Milana Perepyolkina, Salt Lake City author of Gypsy Energy Secrets. ORGANIC AND NATURAL MATTRESSES Why Better Materials Means Better Sleep
S
imply put, an organic or natural mattress is a healthier alternative to traditional mattresses. By eliminating all of the chemicals that are often contained in other mattresses, natural mattresses create a safer, healthier sleep environment. Chemicals such as boric acid, antimony, decabromodiphenyl oxide and formaldehyde are often used in the production of traditional mattresses, which can seep into our skin or we can breathe them in, causing damage to our bodies over time. Kleinsleep, with locations in Norwalk and Stamford, carries organic mattresses from brands Terra Bed and Natural Sleep. Terra Bed’s lines of all-natural and organic mattresses are made from only all-natural and chemical-free products, which create a safer and healthier product to sleep on. They are also incredibly comfortable and provide significantly better support for the body, while reducing pressure points that cause us to toss and turn often at night.
What’s Inside? A Terra Bed organic mattress is made of only three special materials provided by nature. Everything in a Terra Bed comes 26

from the earth, and at the end of its life, it can go back to the earth. Natural Latex: Natural rubber, also known as latex, is the main ingredient in the making of Terra Bed organic mattresses. All natural rubber, prior to being processed into a mattress form, is a milky like substance that is harvested from the Hevea brasiliensis trees which grow in tropical climates. These trees are sustainable and are grown in a pesticide-free environment. The rubber is processed here in the U.S. using the Talalay method, which ensures that its natural properties are kept intact to produce the purest form of rubber possible, free of any chemicals or harmful toxins. The rubber is breathable and resistant to dust mites, mold spores and allergens, as well as extremely durable. While some have concerns about latex allergies, there have been no known complaints stemming from the natural rubber found in mattresses and pillows. Organic Wool: Wool is the only material that keeps us cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. That’s why all Terra eNaturalAwakenings.com
Bed mattresses feature Organic New Zealand Wool. Ask any runner, hiker or biker why they wear wool socks and they will tell you it is because wool wicks away moisture and keeps them dry and comfortable. This great feature of wool allows mattresses to have the coolest, most breathable and moisture-free sleep surface possible. The result is a more comfortable place to sleep, no matter what the season. Another benefit of wool is its natural flame retardant ability. Wool does not burn. Wrapping the beds in wool means they don’t have to apply any chemical flame retardants. Organic Cotton: This key ingredient provides a naturally smooth, soft and cool sleeping surface. Only long staple cotton fibers are used for durability that has no equal. The air circulation and absorbency of the cotton in every Terra Bed natural mattress combined with their proprietary cool channel quilting creates great air circulation around the body. Organic cotton is hypoallergenic and helps to prevent the growth of allergens and mold spores. The mattresses also resist dust mites, since the beds stay cool and dry.
Sleeping Better, Naturally Old fashioned innerspring or coil mattresses contain springs or coils made of metals, which can be hard on the body over time. When we lie on beds made of springs and metals, the pressure points created against our body restrict our blood from flowing properly, which can lead to limbs falling asleep and the “pins and needles” sensation. These sensations lead to repeated tossing and turning in the night—and ultimately, less restful sleep. Terra Bed mattresses allow the body to sink into the mattress, with far less pressure points and a deeper sleep. Another issue with typical mattresses is that they lack the needed support in the lumbar area—specifically the lower back. Since traditional mattresses are more or less flat and our bodies are not, typical mattresses tend to leave unsupported gaps, especially in the lower back area. Terra Bed mattresses are designed with natural rubber cores that work with the shape of the

Use Sunlight and Sleep to Lower COVID-19 Risk
Two readily available natural strategies— sunlight exposure and sufficient sleep— appear to lower the risks of suffering and dying from COVID-19, report two new studies. Researchers from the UK University of Edinburgh examined records of 2,474 U.S. counties from January to April 2020 to compare numbers of COVID-related deaths to levels of UVA rays from the sun. They found that people living in counties with the highest UVA levels had on average, a 29 percent lower chance of dying from the coronavirus. They ruled out the vitamin D factor by not including counties with UVB levels that would produce the vitamin. Repeating the analysis in England and Italy produced the same results. The researchers theorized that nitric oxide released by the skin when in sunlight may reduce the ability of that virus to replicate. A second study of 2,884 high-risk healthcare workers in five European countries and the U.S. found that every additional hour of sleep reduces the risk of COVID-19 infection by 12 percent. However, insomnia, disrupted sleep and daily burnout are linked to a heightened risk of becoming infected with the coronavirus, having more severe symptoms and a longer recovery period, reports the researchers in BMJ Nutrition Prevention & Health. People that had problems like difficulty falling or staying asleep or regularly using sleeping pills were 88 percent more likely to be infected with COVID-19 than those without such issues.

body and fill in all those gaps, allowing for even support for the whole body. The result is a much better supported sleep and a lot less aches and pains. Terra Beds also allow for much freer air circulation around the body due to their organic cotton covers filled with organic wool. The vast majority of mattresses are made with covers and fillings that are made of manmade fibers such as polyester. These fibers do not breathe very well and tend to trap heat and moisture near the body, which can cause discomfort and lead to more tossing and turning at night. We all care deeply about our own and our family’s health and well-being, so when it comes time to decide what they are going to sleep on for eight hours each night, consider a natural mattress. It will truly be a long-term investment in the whole family’s health.

positive psychology series
By VectorMine on Shutterstock
In this series, we’ll hear from Ann C. Reeves about aspects of Positive Psychology. This month, she continues with part 1 of “V” of the Positive Psychology acronym, PERMA-V.
VITALITY
Part I: The V in Positive Psychology by Ann C. Reeves
P
ositive Psychology (PP) is the scientific study of optimal human functioning, its research encompassing neurobehavioral, cognitive behavioral and physiological science. The acronym used in PP is PERMA-V. V stands for Vitality, perhaps the most overriding factor that both encourages and supports the success of Positivity, Engagement, Relationship, Meaning and Achievement/Accomplishment in bringing about a deep sense of well-being. It is a concept put forth by advanced doctoral student, Emiliya Zhivotovskaya, MAPP, CEO and teacher for the Flourishing Center, and is the subject of her doctoral dissertation. Vitality is defined as having the capacity to live and grow, to have physical or mental energy and strength and to endure. Research on vitality investigates many important areas of human functioning, including physical health, mental health and level of performance. According to Olga Lavrusheva, a Finnish researcher on vitality, the significance of vitality in human functioning is now well established, measurable in a quantifiable manner. She sees vitality as consisting of “fluctuating physiological and psychological energy which can be regulated and harnessed by the person processing it”. That means we have choices and can learn to mediate vitality in our lives. Vitality is essential to our well-being, including both physical and mental health. Many pathways to this capacity include sleep, 28

balancing polarities, utilizing the breath, physical activity, body alignment, nutrition, the effect of nature on health, our senses, and sexuality and sensuality. Several concepts related to vitality or wellness are worthy of attention. Our bodies are ecosystems with innate intelligence, and they are always striving for balance through the process of homeostasis, the system whereby the body constantly regulates internal conditions to maintain stable health. It reacts to imbalances in nutrients, regulates body temperature and strives to reduce inflammation. Homeostatis is vital to our well-being and is a feature of all living things. Another concept is the Mind-Body connection. We have often heard about psychosomatic symptoms, meaning a relationship with both mind and body, and often thought of as bodily conditions caused by mental problems. The term somatopsychic is the opposite—the effect of bodily symptoms on the mind, such as PTSD. We cannot separate out the mind from the body. The Wellness Continuum is another concept, developed by Dr. John Travis and Regina Ryan. Their original paradigm was a twoheaded arrow with a neutral point in the middle. To the extreme left was “Premature Death” and to the extreme right was “HighLevel Wellness”. An arrow called “Treatment” went from the extreme left to the neutral point and stopped. Over time, Travis and Ryan recognized that this paradigm was misleading, because they saw that some people who are very physically ill were nonetheless oriented toward wellness; thus, their model was one-dimensional. In their refined model, they recognized that the key difference between illness and wellness was not where they were on the continuum, but “the direction in which they were facing: toward high-level wellness or towards premature death”. We have all known people with significant, often terminal illnesses who lived their life in positivity and love. They faced the direction of high-level wellness to the right rather than negativity and depression on the left. And there are those who seem physically healthy, but are always bemoaning and complaining about any slight symptom, facing toward the left despite their current level of health. A last concept worth considering is Polarities, the work of Chris Kaysar, executive coach. Polarities are interdependent pairs that may appear to be opposite, but which need each other over time, creating balance. They can be energy systems that we live in, and which live in us. For instance: Activity/Rest, Inhale/Exhale, Work/ Play, Clear/Flexible, Self-Assured/Humble. When we insert the word “and” in place of the words “but” or “or”, we can see how they are interdependent, a true win-win situation. How often do we minimize something by starting out positively, and then flatten that positivity with a “but”? Or limit our outcomes by having to choose “this” or “that”? Our bodies work in the same way. Its parts are so interconnected that it is a matter of “both and”. Every slight physiological change causes a cascade of events as the body seeks homeostasis, out of our awareness. As human beings, we have the capacity—one might even say the responsibility—to create a favorable environment for our bodies to thrive. We hear all the time that we need good sleep hygiene, or should eat less salt and fat, or to exercise. We know these “rules” we
eNaturalAwakenings.com
should follow, but often, we lack the basic physiological understanding or the scientific facts of how our bodies actually work, to motivate us to make necessary changes. Here are some of those facts. The hypothalamus is the command center of the brain, and it communicates with the rest of the body through the autonomic nervous system. It is made up of two systems: the sympathetic and parasympathetic. The sympathetic nervous system is the threat detection process that triggers the “fight, flight or freeze” response. We all know that feeling of dread and fear, even if it’s “only” the fear of speaking in public or responding to a negative remark. The parasympathetic system controls involuntary movements such as breathing, heartbeat and blood pressure, a rest and restore function. The brain is connected to the gut through a two-way communication system called the vagus nerve, which is actually two nerves on either side of the body. It is the longest nerve of the autonomic nervous system, beginning at the base of the brain stem and ending in the colon. It stimulates heart muscles, helps to lower resting heart rate, promotes involuntary contractions in the digestive tract and interfaces with the lungs. When one is stressed, glands in the body release adrenaline into the bloodstream, inhibiting the signals that travel through the vagus nerve. This brings about a cascade of physiological events: increased heartrate, pulse and blood pressure; shutting down of the digestive system; and increased blood flow to the muscles and heart. This promotes the body’s capacity to fight or run away—stress, by any other name. Part II of this overview of vitality will offer stress reduction tips, such as how diaphragmatic breathing (deepening the breath) and relaxing or meditative practices can positively affect the vagus nerve. We will also explore the positive impacts of heart rate variability and sleep hygiene on vitality. Ann C. Reeves, Psy.D is a Licensed Psychologist in Wilton.

Doggy Delights Healthy, Homemade Cookie Treats by Amy Coyle

ne morning, Randy Roach awoke to a delicious aroma wafting from the kitchen of his Philadelphia home. Mouth watering, he peeked in the oven to find a dozen boneshaped cookies—meant not for him, but for Woods, the family dog. “Such is life when you live with a dog lover,” laughs Randy’s wife Kate, who had peanut butter,

A Healthy Choice
With the focus on decreasing personal carbon footprints, an Earth-conscious dog owner may want to make dog biscuits at home purely for the lower environmental impact. Research from UCLA shows that industrial production of dog and cat food creates the equivalent in greenhouse gases of 13 million cars annually. Store-bought dog treats require oil, energy and water to produce and transport. The packaging often contains plastic or other nonbiodegradable materials, which cause pollution, block drains and harm wildlife. Making treats at home is simple and less tricky nutritionally than making a dog’s regular meals. “When it comes to regular dog food, I’m not a proponent of home-cooked food. It is far too difficult to balance nutrients. For treats, I am not so concerned,” says Lawrence Gallagher, VMD, at Villanova Vet, in Villanova, Pennsylvania. “But you need to watch calories. Treats should be ‘highreward’ and low-calorie, not necessarily big in size. They are used as a reward, not to
The labels on many commercial dog treats list dubious ingredients such as meat byproducts, sugar, sodium metabisulfite (a bleaching agent), propylene glycol and artificial colors. “My general rule of thumb is if you cannot pronounce or don’t recognize an ingredient, it is probably not healthy for your pet,” says Alison Streit Birken, DVM, owner of Victoria Park Animal Hospital, in Fort Lauderdale. In addition, some packaged treats are produced in countries where ingredient and manufacturing regulations are less rigorous, which has led to illness and even death in dogs.

Getting Started No special equipment is required. Mixing bowls, measuring spoons, a wooden spoon, baking sheets and a cooling rack will suffice. More ambitious treat-makers might want a muffin pan for custom shapes. Common ingredients include pumpkin, bananas, yogurt and peanut butter. When choosing a recipe, aim for no or little sugar. (Honey and molasses are simple sugars.) Also, because homemade treats have no preservatives, be sure to follow storage requirements such as refrigeration or freezing.
Amy Coyle is a freelance writer in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania.

Jen Jovinelly, a DVM candidate at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, promotes simple treats. “Treats are not food. Keep the caloric intake from treats under 10 percent of your dog’s daily caloric requirement.” She also cautions to avoid foods that could be dangerous, such as chocolate, grapes, raisins, avocados, certain nuts, onions, garlic or artificial sweeteners. If unsure about the safety of an ingredient, check the online list at The Humane Society of the United States (HumaneSociety.org) or consult with a veterinarian or animal nutritionist. For those that aren’t inclined to bake, toys filled with organic peanut butter, then frozen, keep dogs happy, while others love the crunch of raw carrots or broccoli. As Birken says, “You can always go to your own refrigerator and pick out some great, healthy dog treats!”
Place dough in between two pieces of parchment paper and roll the dough until it’s about one-quarter-inch thick. Remove the top layer of the parchment paper and cut shapes with cookie cutters (consider the size of the dog when selecting cutter sizes). Bake for 45 to 55 minutes until treats are dry and hard. Let cool completely. Store in an airtight container.
