“Necessity is the mother of invention. A need or problem encourages creative effort to meet the need or solve the problem.” ~ Plato “At seventeen, I enlisted in the Marine Corps. At Camp Lejeune, I drank water contaminated with carcinogenic substances which gave me cancer. The Chemotherapy destroyed the cartilage in my cervical spine. The pain became so intense, I felt I would not be able to work much longer as a Physical Therapist.

Hence, the creation of Chazael Lotion.” Kevin Sgroi, PT Creator of Chazael Lotion
“Chazael lotion is amazing! After being shot six times on March 6, 2016, nothing helped alleviate the severe swelling in my feet until my physical therapist gave me this lotion. He said it works equally well in relieving the symptoms of arthritis, muscle spasms, and increasing flexibility in joints plagued by arthritis. Please try this product!”
Pastor Tim, Coeur d’Alene “When someone would say ‘make a fist’ I could only chuckle and give them my flat hand with fingers slightly curved. One day, I was very blessed to be treated with Chazael Lotion! Now I can make a complete fist with my right hand and almost a complete one with my left. The greatest benefit of this lotion is being PAIN FREE!”
Kathleen P., Hayden “Chazael, the essential oil based serum used by Kevin in his physical therapy treatments, is nothing short of a miracle. It provides incredible relief to my swollen tissues, aching muscles and arthritic joints. To see the rest of my testimonial, go to Chazael-Lotion.com.”

s it just me, or has July come in like a wrecking ball? And by wrecking ball, I mean road construction every-freaking-place you turn. I always forget that summer is the time when roads get worked on, and what typically takes 15 minutes drivetime can take up to 30 or (gasp!) 45 minutes! As you might’ve noticed, I’ve been feeling a wee bit inconvenienced lately with all the road construction. Interestingly, a few days ago I was driving with my kids on a stretch of freeway between Post Falls and Coeur d’Alene that had been under construction, and my 6-year-old daughter says, “Mommy, listen! This new road feels so smooth and quiet. I love it!” And then she closes her eyes and exhales like she’s in a spa or something. I look at her in my rearview mirror like, “what do you mean you strange child?” Her face is legitimately enjoying something, and I want some of that, so I listen too. And sure enough, she’s right! It feels as though we are part driving, part floating on a smooth cloud of peaceful freeway. Ahhhhhhh. Alright, I guess I can see the benefit after all. Nothing is by accident, and I strongly believe every single experience we have offers a practical and spiritual message if we allow it. In this case, I realized summer is an ideal time for both outer and inner construction work—an inquiry into the quality of my own metaphorical “road of life” and its current trajectory. Where am I going? Why am I going there? Is it truly the direction that feels right? How’s the ride? Is it bumpy, loud and damaging? Or smooth, quiet and peaceful? Am I in a big, fat hurry? Can I appreciate the journey, or am I just in it for the destination? The list of question goes on, as does the road—for now anyway. So why not take time to put up some orange safety cones, slow down and delve into the questions that are almost impossible to ask at 75 mph? Consider this the next time your lane is merging at a near stand-still in some rage-inducing summer road construction and maybe, just maybe, it won’t be quite so annoying—and who knows, you might even find some of the fix-it answers your life has been looking for. There’s certainly no construction in this month’s pages of Natural Awakenings Inland Northwest, but we do have what you need to get your gut function and vagus nerve back in working order! This month’s feature highlights this vital nerve, as well as ways to keep it toned and happy. In addition, don’t miss the news brief section and all the numerous retreats and workshops coming up in August and September as well as VegFest happening at the end of the month. You will also want to read about the work of astrologer for the soul, Govinda Miller, as well as holistic chiropractor, Dr. Patrick Dougherty of Life Chiropractic. We also have some excellent local editorial, including articles by Brooke Heather on the power of biofeedback on the vagus nerve, Paxton McKinney on cannabis versus opioids for pain, and Rhonda-T Warren on the truth about veganism (as well as an amazing portobello barbecue recipe). It’s time to sit back and enjoy the ride!

Spiritual Astrologer Helps Clients Find Their Soul Purpose
F
or more than 40 years, Govinda Miller has been offering spiritual astrology readings to clients as far away as Australia, China, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore and Brazil as well as here in the United States. He and his wife, Janet, live in Priest River, Idaho, where Miller, who goes by his first name Govinda, offers readings both in person and over the phone. Govinda Miller “I offer a variety of readings to clients, but the most important one is the Life Reading, which is the basis for all readings and delves into the client’s Natal Chart,” explains Govinda. “Vital information is obtained during this 90-minute reading, including career talents, relationship patterns, ideal mate, emotional nature, mental energies and other patterns. It also includes information about recent past lifetimes that are relevant to this one.” Govinda invites Divine guidance into each reading to help steer the session in the most beneficial direction. “I let Spirit guide what is most appropriate for that person at the time,” he explains. “Every session is about using one’s gifts and talents for their greater good and increasing love in this world. In other readings we look at what is pertinent to their life at that time—especially when it comes to relationships, career and important decisions.” In addition to his signature Life Reading, Govinda also offers Relationship Readings, Solar Return Readings, Current and Future Trends, Child Guidance, Event Timing for New Beginnings and Personal Guidance Sessions. CHAZAEL PAIN RELIEF LOTION
Utilized by Area Physical Therapists
W
hen physical therapist Kevin Sgroi sought relief from painful side effects caused by aggressive chemotherapy treatments, he began experimenting with the medicines and lotions used to treat his own patients. Sgroi’s alchemy led to creating his own all-natural Chazael Pain Relief Lotion which he uses regularly on his patients to help relieve muscle pain, spasms, leg cramps and swelling from arthritis and joint inflammation. Sgroi has successfully used Chazael (pronounced khaz-aw-ale) to help many people alleviate their pain—including local physical therapists who have found amazing relief for themselves and their patients. “Chazael is my favorite topical pain relief lotion and has become my go-to! I am a physical therapist and have started using this incredible lotion with my patients,” says Laura Steininger, DPT. “When pain is decreased, therapy is more effective. The lotion absorbs quickly into the skin and it does not have a lingering smell. Chazael is a game changer for me.” Laura Steininger Jason Bruns, MPT, OCS, couldn’t agree more. After 20 plus years of practicing manual therapy, his hands often become stiff and swollen. “Within five minutes of rubbing in the Chazael I could make a fist with ease and the swelling in my PIP joints was significantly reduced. I use Chazael daily for myself and patients,” he affirms. Chazael, the biblical word meaning “God sees,” has been hailed as a miracle in a bottle by patients and customers that are now living pain-free lives. Jason Bruns

R
esearch is helping doctors connect the dots between seemingly unrelated conditions like irritable bowel syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia, revealing a common denominator: the multitasking vagus nerve, the longest in the autonomic nervous system. The superpower of this doublebranched cranial nerve lies in transporting major neurotransmitters along what is known as the brain-gut axis. “The vagus nerve stems from the brain to the abdomen like a communication superhighway between your gut and brain,” says Hannah Aylward, an Orlando-based certified holistic health coach and gut health expert. “Studies show that the vagus nerve regulates inflammation throughout the body.”
Promising Research
Recent studies have shown that vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) can improve quality of life for individuals suffering from numer-

ous conditions. One type is a device that can be implanted by a neurosurgeon, which sends electrical impulses to the vagus nerve in children that suffer from seizures and adults with depression as a supplemental treatment when surgery or medications are not possible or effective. There is also a handheld, non-invasive VNS option called gammaCore, a U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved device that offers hope for sufferers of cluster and migraine headaches. Its effectiveness for chronic pain management, as well as in cases of epilepsy and depression, was published in the Neuromodulation Journal in 2015. PTSD researcher Imanuel Lerman, M.D., and his colleagues with the Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System, found that VNS affects areas of the brain responsible for processing emotional pain. The findings, published in the journal PLOS ONE earlier this year, also show that VNS delays the brain’s response to pain signals in individuals with PTSD.

Mental Health, Trauma and the Gut When it comes to the vagus nerve, anxiety is physical. Post-traumatic stress is rooted in neurobiology and experienced in the body, not just the mind, says Arielle Schwartz, Ph.D., a Boulder, Colorado-based clinical psychologist and author of The Complex PTSD Workbook: A Mind-Body Approach to Regaining Emotional Control and Becoming Whole. “This is why you can’t simply think or talk your way out of your trauma reactions.” According to Schwartz, “Disruptions in the gut flora, which often occur with overuse of antibiotics, can have a significant impact on mental health. An imbalance in the gut can lead to an inflammatory response in the immune system and a wide range of disruptive symptoms.” Aylward notes that 95 percent of the body’s mood-boosting chemical serotonin resides in the enteric nervous system, which governs the function of the gastrointestinal tract. “The brain-gut axis is becoming increasingly important as a therapeutic target for psychiatric and GI disorders,” she says. Daniel J. Siegel, M.D., clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine and founding co-director of UCLA’s Mindful Awareness Research Center, explains the trauma loop. “Developmental trauma impairs the integrative circuits of the brain and nervous system— the prefrontal cortex. When this happens, the brain will be hyperalert, interpreting some non-threatening situations as threatening. “Learning to be aware of our inter-
nal state and learning calming techniques helps to regulate the autonomic nervous system and can go a long way,” says Siegel. “High ventral vagal tone means having a state of calm.”

Vagus Power Everyone can benefit from increased vagal tone, which goes hand-in-hand with engaging the parasympathetic nervous system for optimum equilibrium at the cellular level. Acupuncture, chiropractic—with a focus on the cranial nerves—massage, meditation, singing, laughing loudly, chanting mantras, gentle yoga and exercise, positive social interactions, belly breathing and chanting all make the vagus nerve a happy camper. These activities promote relaxation and help to decrease inflammation. “As a certified yoga instructor, I can attest to a wide range of natural vagus nerve stimulation techniques, especially using the breath,” says Schwartz. “Diaphragmatic breathing creates a gentle massage across your digestive organs, releases the diaphragm and stimulates nerve fibers within the lungs. Heart rate is reduced.” Brief exposure to cold water or cold air improves vagal tone and is a good option when anxiety is high. Eating cold-water fish like wild salmon or other foods high in omega-3 fatty acids such as walnuts, seaweed, hemp, flax or chia seeds provides vagal nourishment. Marlaina Donato is the author of several books, including Multidimensional Aromatherapy. Connect at AutumnEmbersMusic.com.
Vagus-Nourishing Diet Tips Advice from gut health expert Hannah Aylward: ✔ Eat plenty of vegetables, high-quality proteins, fiber and healthy fats. ✔ A diet low in sugar and processed carbohydrates supports healthy vagus nerve function by maintaining a healthy gut microbiome. ✔ Practice intermittent fasting, which stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system (not recommended for people suffering from adrenal fatigue or high stress). ✔ Take probiotics. Lactobacillus has been shown to increase GABA via stimulation of the vagus nerve. Bifidobacterium longum has demonstrated it can normalize anxietylike behavior in mice by acting through the vagus nerve.

Biofeedback &Breathwork
Stimulate the Vagus Nerve by Brooke Heather
H
ave you ever coughed when cleaning your ears? The vagus nerve is responsible for this reaction. Have you ever wondered why your stomach gets upset as a result of an emotional or stressful event? Or why some people have gastrointestinal issues that don’t resolve themselves as easily as others? This is also the vagus nerve. The term “vagal tone” refers to the regulation of part of the nervous system called the vagus nerve. Because the gut is considered the second brain—being that it produces neurotransmitters previously thought only to be made in brain tissue—the vagus nerve has a large impact on mental health issues including anxiety, depression and more. The word vagus translates to “wandering” in Latin. The vagus nerve is the longest and most complex of all the cranial nerves, beginning in the brain stem behind the ears and then wandering down the sides of the neck, throughout the chest area

and ending in the lower abdominal region. While some nerves have either sensory or motor functions, the vagus nerve has both. Motor and sensory fibers branch out from the heart, gut and lungs to other areas including the gallbladder, spleen, liver, kidneys and beyond. This complex nerve affects the entire body and there is a growing body of evidence supporting the use of various therapies and techniques aimed at stimulating the vagus nerve to target specific conditions as well as for overall health, both physically and psychologically. Stimulation of the vagus nerve directly through biofeedback therapy results in having more vagal tone. The more “vagal tone” we have, the better we are able to handle stress, experience less digestive problems and other physical issues. We are more mentally and emotionally balanced. The vagus nerve is the main player of the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest) versus the sympathetic branch (flight or fight) of the nervous system.

Absorption of nutrients by the release of intrinsic factor that the vagus nerve is responsible for is vital for digestive efficiency from the stomach to the colon. “Indirect stimulation” of the vagus nerve through breathwork is one of the most effective ways to bring calming to your system on your own. Because we do not have conscious control over the parasympathetic branch of the nervous system, deep breathing is considered indirect stimulation. The exhalation phase of breathwork causes the heart rate to decrease. Alternately, inhalation causes the heart to beat faster in order for oxygenated blood to circulate throughout the body. We can visualize the heart working this way to stay focused during breathwork. Some studies suggest that the vagus nerve is what allows us to get into a mental state of “flow” which can be activated through singing. Meditation is also an ideal way to increase vagal tone. Studies consistently show meditators have an overall increase in positive emotions, like joy, interest, amusement, serenity and hope. Prayer and laughter also induce good vagal toning effects. Studies have found that higher vagal tone is associated with greater closeness to others and more altruistic behavior. The vagus nerve and parasympathetic nervous system are responsible for bringing the body back to homeostasis, or to a state of balance, after periods of stress and anxiety. Psychology Today points this out in an article titled A Vagus Nerve Survival Guide to Combat Fight-or-Flight Urges. “Unfortunately, the Toffleresque ‘future shock’ of the 21st-century digital age (marked by too
much change in too short a time) is causing our evolutionary biology to short-circuit by throwing our individual and collective nervous systems out of balance,” writes article author Christopher Bergland. We can counter this “future shock” by making biofeedback therapy a priority, joining a yoga class or walking club, scheduling time in nature, and getting regular bodywork.

Alice Robb on the
Transformative Power of Dreams by Randy Kambic
W
e know that sleep is good for mental and physical health, but whether dreams can play a role is a fascinating topic. When we journey into that state, science journalist Alice Robb feels we can reap even more benefits and make our waking lives more productive, healthier and happier. Her recent book Why We Dream: The Transformative Power of Our Nightly Journey, which blossomed from a trip to Peru, posits a new way to look at our dreams including how to recall and even influence them, and how doing so benefits us when awake. Rich with recent studies and evoking famous artists, thinkers and others over centuries, she traces the intricate links between dreaming and creativity, and offers tips on how we can relish the intense adventure of lucid dreaming. Robb was a staff writer for The New Republic and has also written for New York Magazine, The Atlantic, Elle, The Washington Post, the BBC and British Vogue. A graduate of Oxford with Bachelor of Arts degrees in both Archaeology and Anthropology, she resides in Brooklyn, New York.
How did your experience in Peru shape both your dreams 14

and your study of them?
It was where it all got started for me and even though it was eight years ago, I still remember my first lucid dream as if it was yesterday. If I hadn’t had that experience of doing the exercises to elicit lucid dreaming, I don’t know if I would’ve written the book—although I’ve always been fascinated by my regular dreams, which have been vivid, and have often wondered what was going on in my brain to produce them—especially when I felt they were affecting my moods or my daily life.
How is lucid dreaming different than normal dreaming? In lucid dreams, you are aware that you are dreaming. A lot of people will be in a nightmare; it’s really scary, and you say to yourself, “This can’t be real, this must be a dream,” and then maybe you can get yourself out of it. You can train yourself to prolong those lucid moments. Some people do it naturally while others can do different meditation exercises to learn to gain awareness within their dreams. Before you start trying to have lucid dreams, it’s important to have very good recall of your regular dreams. We’re all
inwAwakenings.com
dreaming every night, every time we have a REM cycle, about every 90 minutes that we are asleep, even if you don’t remember your dreams. It’s easier for most people to improve their dream recall. It’s as simple as saying to yourself before bed, “I want to remember my dreams tonight.” The more intention you have, the more you think about your dreams during the day, can be enough to trigger you to better remember your dreams. If you pay close attention to your environment, looking and examining it and asking yourself whether it’s real, you will then ask yourself the same question in a dream.
How do you feel lucid dreaming can improve our overall well-being?
You can practice a speech you are worried about. If you are an athlete, you can mentally prepare. It can help with your mental health. You can use lucid dreams to confront your demons; you can summon someone that you want to have a conversation with and practice talking with them. They are awe-inspiring. Knowing you are lying in bed, but also feeling, physically, that you are in another place, is very powerful.
What steps can we take to improve our ability to recall dreams?
Keep a dream journal. It doesn’t have to be pen and paper; you can speak your dreams into your phone in the morning or in the middle of the night if you wake up… whatever you can do to train yourself to hold onto them because if you don’t remember them when you wake up, then they will fade pretty quickly. As soon as I started keeping a dream journal, I was amazed at how many I was remembering. When getting started, make sure to write something every morning, even “I don’t remember anything.” The habits will become ingrained and you’ll start to remember dreams. SUMMER EATING
The Herbal Connection by Kajsa Nickels
S
ummer is an ideal time to add a healthy dose of fresh, organic herbs to make cool salads, luscious smoothies and other hot-weather eats and treats. Herbs are not only a flavorful addition to any meal, they are also chock-full of health benefits, from lowering blood pressure and improving mineral balance to increasing immune support, hydration, energy and healthy skin. Most people consider using herbs in small amounts as seasonings for recipes such as spaghetti sauce, soups or desserts. However, they are edible plants, just like kale and spinach. Although they tend to have strong flavors when dried, fresh herbs are usually quite mild and can be eaten in large amounts like any other vegetable.
Cool Benefits “Summertime herbs are important for dealing with the heat and humidity that the season brings,” says Nathaniel Whitmore, a Chinese medicine herbalist and shiatsu massage practitioner in Milford, Pennsylvania. An herb that he recommends for this time of year is American ginseng, which, unlike its Chinese namesake, is considered a “cooling” herb and helps keep the body moist. When combined with fresh chrysanthemum flowers, the result is a powerful elixir that both hydrates and energizes. “A piece of American ginseng root and a few chrysanthemums placed in a 16

jar of water and set on a windowsill for a few days makes a great cold infusion,” says Whitmore. “You can store it in the fridge for a few days and drink it in small amounts at a time to benefit from its energizing and hydrating properties.” Soft-stemmed herbs such as parsley and dill can be used in large amounts in salads and summer sandwiches. Other heat-tolerant herbs that are easy to grow include lemon balm, rosemary, lavender, mint and basil. “Lemon balm is great for headaches and insomnia that are common during summer heat waves,” says Michelle Schoffro Cook, Ph.D., an herbalist and doctor of natural medicine, in Ontario, Canada. “Basil can help reduce summer achiness, while lavender serves as a relaxant and an excellent bug repellant.” In addition to relieving headaches and restlessness, lemon balm is also beneficial for those that suffer from high blood pressure. A study in the Journal of Herbal Medicine reports that it is helpful in reducing blood pressure in patients with chronic stable angina. Rosemary, another herb used for sleep disorders, was found to also help improve memory and decrease anxiety in a study conducted in Iran at the Kerman University of Medical Sciences. One study in 2009 by researchers in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Allahbad, in India, revealed that polyphenols found in herbs and plants harbor antioxidant properties that can help reduce the risk of developing cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and neurodegenerative disorders.
Fresh Is Best While herbs can be used in their extracted and dried forms, the most significant health benefits are often found in the raw, organic plant. “Fresh is better,” says Whitmore. “This is especially true when it comes to the more aromatic plants such as basil and lavender. A lot of the more volatile constituents are lost during the drying process.” Most herbs grow best in dry garden areas that receive at least eight hours of sun each day. Although some herbs can grow in partially shaded locations, they won’t be as flavorful. Many herbs can also be grown in containers or pots. Maria Noël Groves, a clinical herbalist in Allenstown, New Hampshire, and author of Grow Your Own Herbal Remedies: How to Create a Customized Herb Garden to Support Your Health & Well-Being, lists lemon balm, Korean mint, anise hyssop and purple basil as among her favorite summer culinary and beverage herbs that are easy to grow in pots. These make easy pickings for wraps, salads, sandwiches and more. “Lemon balm can also be used to make infused water,” says Groves. “With lemon verbena, lemon grass or holy basil, the result is refreshing and calming.” Just take a few sprigs and place them in either plain or seltzer water. The result is a delicately flavored beverage that’s also healthy and hydrating. Kajsa Nickels is a freelance writer and a music composer. She resides in northeastern Pennsylvania. Summer is here! It’s a great season for neighborly gatherings, joyful celebrations, and best of all, barbecues. Vegans everywhere are heading outdoors to grill up some amazing plant-based dishes. Which begs the question, how does one barbecue a plant? With ease! Options for plantbased grilling ideas are plentiful online, and simple to prepare. They range from effortless grilled corn on the cob, plant-based burgers and veggie kebobs, to grilled fruit, pizza and roasted veggie paninis. A dish that sparks ramblings of epicurean delight from vegans and non-vegans alike is marinated, grilled portobello mushroom caps. These incredibly delicious steaks have a deep, savory-sweet flavor, with a hint of tang, and pair marvelously with garlic-horseradish smashed potatoes, and an earthy Merlot. Marinate your mushrooms anywhere from a few hours to overnight for a memorable addition to your animal-free barbecue, which will have folks clamoring for the recipe. 1 tablespoon fabulous red wine 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1/8 cup tamari 1/8 cup basic teriyaki marinade (or an additional 1/8 cup tamari) 1/4 cup good balsamic vinegar 5 cloves garlic, minced (yes that’s five cloves) 4 large portobello mushroom caps (This is the basic recipe, enough for two people. Add any or all of the following: a handful of basil leaves or scallions, ¼ cup diced red or green onions, or garlic chives.) Brush the mushrooms instead of washing. Contrary to popular practice, it is not good to wash the mushrooms or submerge them in water. They will become too slimy. Instead, gently pull off the stem and brush them with a soft, dry brush or paper towel to remove the loose dirt. Marinate for an hour or two, or longer if you wish. Mushroom flesh will eagerly absorb liquid, especially with the addition of vinegar. You can even get away with a 15-minute soak if you fill the gills with marinade while grilling, before you flip them over. Cook on a pre-heated grill to get a good sear and flip halfway through. You can also broil or bake at 400 degrees for 10 minutes. Eat with rice pilaf, smashed potatoes or atop a big pile of quinoa. Enjoy! July 2019

Fish are not Plants by Rhonda-T Warren
Cannabis, Pain and the
OPIOID CRISIS
W
hen we hear the term veganism, most of us have thoughts of tofu, kale and wafting patchouli. The idea that veganism is a diet consumed by free-spirited bohemians is a common misconception. In fact, veganism is far from a diet—it is a matter of social justice. The Vegan Society defines veganism as a “philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animalfree alternatives for the benefit of humans, animals and the environment…” Veganism is simply rejecting the premise that sentient individuals be considered property to be used for any purpose; not for clothing, entertainment, experimentation— and certainly not for food. Vegans eat plants; just plants. Fish are not plants, honey is not a plant, and neither are eggs or milk. Rhonda-T Warren, pictured here with Oberon, is co-founder of Terra Farm Sanctuary located in northwest Spokane County. Terra Farm Sanctuary is a small, niche, vegan sanctuary providing a safe home for animals who have been abandoned, abused or exploited, to peacefully live out their lives. O
pioid addiction and overdose have become a major concern—and for good reason. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), 47,000 people died in the U.S. of an opioid overdose in 2017; that’s an average of 128 people a day. Over time, prescription opioids become highly addictive while also losing their effectiveness to treat pain. As a result, researchers found that many people who become addicted to prescription opioids later turn to heroin as a less expensive alternative that provides similar effects. According to Salynn Boyles, a freelance contributing writer at MedPage Today and WebMD, over 100 million people suffer from chronic pain in the U.S. This may lead one to believe the only options for chronic pain are to live with it or take the opioids and risk addiction. However, much to the dismay of the pharmaceutical industry, cannabis offers another possible solution to treating pain. The human body has natural cannabinoid receptors, and it just so happens that cannabinoids like Cannabidiol (CBD) and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are found in cannabis plants as well. CBD and THC are both components of the hemp and marijuana plants. Like opioid receptors, cannabinoid receptors reside in the pain, addiction and behavior parts of the brain. Due to these biological findings, it’s possible that cannabis can replace opioids for many users. While much research is still needed,
inwAwakenings.com
initial studies show that cannabis can help with the following aspects of the opioid crisis: Cannabis can reduce opioid withdrawal symptoms for those trying to get off the drug. Studies show that THC and CBD may help with nausea, vomiting, anxiety, restlessness, agitation and more. In addition, unlike other withdrawal drugs such as methadone, a person cannot overdose on cannabis. When taken with opioids, cannabis can increase opioid potency and prevent opioid tolerance building. This enables patients to stay on a lower dose for a longer time, rather than having to go back to the doctor every few months for a higher dose. For some, cannabis can replace opioids completely. Since the THC and CBD cannabinoids also attach to cannabinoid receptors in the brain, they may be helpful in reducing pain. Many cannabis experts report that taking CBD with THC will reduce the psychoactive effects from the THC and increase the benefits for both. Alternatives to Antibiotics
Beyond Antibiotics Pets Can Heal With Natural Approaches by Karen Shaw Becker
L
ike people, pets can develop allergies to medications that are overprescribed, including antibiotics, which also have a long list of side effects—many of which are long-term. There is also the escalating problem of resistance, which is the result of too-frequent and unnecessary use of these drugs. One of the most important things to know is that dogs and cats are exposed to antibiotics when they eat food containing the meat of factory-farmed animals, which includes about 99 percent of pet foods on the market today. The exception is a very small number that contain free-range, organic ingredients.
Antibiotic Resistance
In many cases, even when bacteria are exposed for the first time to a particular antibiotic, the majority will die, but some will survive and pass on that resistance to other bacteria. The problem is not that certain disease-causing bacteria are antibioticresistant, but that the resistance genes in any type of bacteria can transfer their ability to survive to billions of other bacteria. This is how superbugs are born. 20
Inland Northwest
These are a strain of bacteria able to withstand assault by multiple types of antibiotics. When a veterinarian can no longer eliminate bacterial infections with antibiotics, the life of the animal is threatened, and that’s the biggest concern. If a veterinarian makes a diagnosis of infection, ask for a culture and sensitivity test. Otherwise, he or she is making a guess at what type of organism is present and the best antibiotic to treat it. Each time an unnecessary or inappropriate antibiotic is prescribed, the potential for resistance increases. Only in an emergency situation should a veterinarian prescribe an antibiotic before the culture and sensitivity test can be performed. The vet can then switch medications if necessary when the results arrive. Giving the proper dose of the antibiotic at the proper intervals and using up the entire prescription is important, even if the pet seems to be fully recovered before the medication has run out. This will ensure the infection is totally resolved and prevent the pet from having to take another full course of antibiotics because the first one wasn’t fully administered and the infection wasn’t effectively cleared.
inwAwakenings.com
Many conditions for which antibiotics are often indiscriminately prescribed respond very well to a combination of natural therapies, including herbs, homeopathic remedies, nutraceuticals, immune system stimulants and specific nutritional interventions. Functional medicine veterinarians, a group that is thankfully growing in number, realize this and are able to partner with pet parents to offer alternatives to antibiotics. A 2016 study showed cranberry extract to be as or more effective in preventing E. coli-related urinary tract infections (UTIs) in dogs as short-term antibiotic treatment. In addition, cranberry extract can help fight multidrug-resistant bacteria in dogs with recurrent E. coli UTIs. In a study of shelter dogs, researchers compared the use of probiotics to antibiotics to treat acute diarrhea caused by stress. They concluded probiotic therapy was as effective as antibiotic therapy. In addition, dogs that were unresponsive to antibiotics appeared to benefit significantly from subsequent probiotic treatment. Oregano oil, propolis, olive leaf, essential oils, colloidal silver and Manuka honey help reduce bacterial skin infections caused by methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) with good success. If a dog or cat isn’t facing a lifethreatening health situation, talk with the veterinarian about alternatives to antibiotics. In these situations, pet parents often find it beneficial to consult a functional medicine or integrative veterinarian whose goal is to treat these problems by starting with the least toxic options first. Karen Shaw Becker is a proactive, integrative doctor of veterinary medicine who consults internationally and writes for Mercola Healthy Pets (HealthyPets.Mercola.com).
savitskaya iryna/Shutterstock.com
It’s important to reseed the pet’s gastrointestinal (GI) system with friendly microorganisms—probiotics—during and after antibiotic therapy to reestablish a healthy balance of gut bacteria. This will also help keep a dog or cat’s digestive system working optimally and the immune system strong.

The Grace of Abundance Five Practices to Create a More Abundant Life
A
by Meriflor Toneatto
bundance means plenty—a flowing of love, vitality, wealth, joy, prosperity, success and more. GRACE is an acronym representing five practices that can magnify abundance in all areas of life, including finances.
G = Gratitude There is tremendous power in being grateful, because what we focus on expands. Gratitude opens our heart to receive and give blessings. This puts us in a space to have more things to be grateful for. Practicing gratitude can be as simple as saying, “I am grateful for…” or “I am thankful for…” If we find ourselves in a
Coming Next Month
The key way to get into alignment for more abundance is to know our purpose, follow our passion and work on releasing internal fears and doubts. When we are in alignment, everything flows. There is ease and doors open for us. People, money and resources will show up on our path to help us achieve our goals. Therefore, we must always be awake to our goodness and take inspired actions to manifest our desires into reality.
C = Commitment Commit to gifting ourselves with an abundant mindset because our mindset is critical to our success. One way to quickly shift our mindset to the positive is to concentrate on our desire and ask ourselves, “What do I have to believe for this to be true?” Our mind will creatively generate many possibilities that can get us excited, which then shifts how we think and feel to what is positive. As we do this, we will also create greater confidence in the knowledge that the universe is always working in our favor.
E = Expression Express our passion by first doing what we love. Then find a way to use our passion, purpose and life to serve others. When we do this, our world, our financial abundance and our joy will expand exponentially. READY FOR RELIEF FROM NIGHTTIME BACK PAIN?
Adjustable Spine Alignment Pillow (ASAP)
The ASAP is ergonomically designed to support and maintain proper curvature of the neck and cervical spine as you sleep. The hole in the center cradles and tilts your head back, opening your airways to increase oxygen and reduce snoring and apnea. You can remove or add filling to the side cushions via zipper openings to customize support for maximum comfort of shoulders and neck when sleeping on your side.
Starting at $35
Adjustable Lumbar Pillow
The Adjustable Lumbar Pillow is specifically designed to ease and alleviate back pain and support both hips and the lumbar spine while sleeping on your back. It also supports the soft portion between your hips and ribcage when sleeping on your side. All cushion portions are adjustable via zipper openings.
Starting at $20
“I developed the pillow after a car accident herniated a disc in my neck and lower back. I found that I couldn’t get comfortable on any regular pillow and had to sleep on my back or the pain radiated out into my shoulders. It took me years to develop and patent a neck support pillow that would allow me a pain-free night’s sleep. Everyone who has one is very appreciative and this is why I work so hard to get it out there.” - Larry Wilmarth, Owner and Creator See What Our Customers Are Saying “I have had medical issues and injuries to both of my shoulders and have had serious problems with sleeping and waking up in the morning with my shoulders aching from sleeping on my side. I was reluctant to use this pillow since I am a side sleeper and did not think the pillow would work for me. How wrong I was! Before I knew it, I was waking up in the morning without my normal shoulder pain and felt more rested and ready for the day. I highly recommend this pillow to anyone who suffers from neck and shoulder pain, upper back pain or anyone looking for a good night’s sleep.” - Mike T. “I have been using the Adjustable Spine Alignment Pillow for about six months now and I love it! I used to have restless sleep always tossing and turning and waking up with a crick in my neck. Since using the pillow, I have been sleeping better than ever. The beauty of this pillow is that it is adjustable. When one of the neck pockets gets padded down, I just add a little more filling. I would highly recommend this pillow!” - Donna W.
