“S
chool’s … out … for … summer!” I’m not a huge Alice Cooper fan—and neither are my boys—but I always belt out that line with them the second they walk through the door on that much-awaited last day. This year was a big one for our youngest, who will be a high school freshman in the fall. Family time is becoming more precious as my boys get older, so this summer in particular, it’s at the top of my to-do list. When I was growing up, summer meant eating outdoors with my family. Dad would lovingly hose off our picnic table and scrub down the grill, and then while Mom picked mint for iced tea, I’d help Dad gather from the garden. There was nothing better than finding a juicy red tomato or a big cucumber ready for eating. All the summer traditions of my childhood took place outside: riding bikes all day long with my friends, playing kickball in the street, and hearing shouts of “Tag—you’re it!” long into the warm evenings. Sadly, our children’s generation doesn’t know these simple joys. Technology has captured their focus and enthusiasm more than fresh-air fun with friends. So in this month’s issue, we discuss ways to get kids outdoors, such as having relaxed family meals outside, where kids can alternate between eating and playing. Once they see fresh food laid out for them under the bright-blue skies—knowing they can jump up from the table to kick a few balls and then run back for another bite, carefree as can be—don’t you think those more old-fashioned summers will make a fresh and wholesome comeback? I sure do!

Deepak Chopra Launches Book Tour in Washington Heights
N
ew York Times bestselling author Deepak Chopra will launch his book tour for Metahuman: Unleashing Your Infinite Potential on October 2 at the United Palace, in Washington Deepak Chopra Heights. Doors will open at 6:45 p.m. for an 8 p.m. discussion by Chopra, followed by a book signing. In this new book, Chopra explains how to move beyond present limitations to access a field of infinite possibilities. Being “metahuman” isn’t an idea from science fiction, nor is it about being a superhero, he writes. A metahuman is one who has moved past the limitations constructed by the mind to enter a new state of awareness, one that provides conscious and concrete access to peak experiences that can transform life from the inside out. The result is liberation from old conditioning and all the mental constructs that underlie anxiety, tension and ego-driven demands. Chopra makes this process practical by ending his book with a 31-day guide to becoming metahuman. “Once you wake up,” he writes, “life becomes transformed, because pure consciousness— which is the field of all possibilities—dawns in your life. Only then does your infinite potential become your personal reality.” Location: 4140 Broadway at 175th Street, Washington Heights (near the ATrain/GWB bus terminal). Certification Courses in Ayurveda to Begin in October
Dr. Somesh Kaushik will begin offering certification courses in Ayurvedic Health Counselor (CAHC) and Ayurvedic Practitioner (CAP) starting in October. Certification will be awarded by the National Ayurvedic Medical Association (NAMA) Certification Board. The application deadline is August 30. A CAHC is trained to focus on preventive health care as well as health promotion, with a specific focus on diet and lifestyle through traditional Ayurvedic medical science principles and practices. Completion of the intense, in-depth CAHC program will constitute eligibility for the CAP program. The curriculum consists of lectures, clinical practicum, self-study and case reports. Travel to India to participate in health clinics is part of the clinical practicum for the CAP program and optional for the CAHC program. NAMA certification includes four areas of concentration: foundations of Ayurveda, including history and philosophy; concepts of Ayurveda; skills and competencies; and recommendations, treatment and other interventions. The certification programs are for anyone who would like to deepen their knowledge of health for their own and their family’s well-being, and for those who wish to pursue Ayurveda, the world’s oldest healing system, as a profession. Kaushik has been practicing Ayurveda for more than 35 years. He received his training as an Ayurvedic physician at Kurukshetra University in India, and as a naturopathic doctor at the University of Bridgeport, Connecticut. He also holds master’s degrees in public health and public administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Sleep Industry Makes Strides in Plant-Based Lifestyle
T
he plant-based lifestyle is now years into its breakthrough in the United States, as more and more Americans search for ways to live more healthily and naturally. That is the case especially in the food industry, which has greatly improved the prices, taste and general quality of its plant-based products over time. But the sleep industry has also made great strides in this arena, says Carlos Shiera, media relations director for SkinnyPillow. Shiera was one of around 3,700 people who attended the PlantBased-World Expo in New York City in June. He says hundreds of those people bought SkinnyPillows—new, all-natural pillows that take the cycle of plant-based living literally, “from seed to sleep.” “Even people immersed in the natural lifestyle found it eye-opening, the obvious importance of natural sleep that SkinnyPillow promotes,” Shiera says. “The kapok-filled pillow is 100 percent plant-based, leaving out all the chemicals and harmful materials that affect millions of people that use synthetic pillows. Our stand was incredibly busy throughout both days of the expo, attracting the attention of people from all kinds of backgrounds, including doctors, investors and natural-living experts.” For more information, contact Carlos Shiera at 305-987-3879 or CShiera@SkinnyPillow.com, follow SkinnyPillow on social media @skinnypillow.us, or visit SkinnyPillow.com. The fair, which will take place 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 28 at the Roger Smith Hotel, offers two rooms of speakers all day, plus energy healers, intuitive readers and a variety of wellness vendors. Among the 18 featured speakers will be brain coach Eric Kaplan, DC, presenting Answers to All Your Questions about Memory Loss, Insomnia, Fatigue, Stress and Anxiety. Kaplan will talk about natural protocols to keep the mind strong, facilitate weight loss, improve sleeping habits, reduce anxiety and increase energy. Happier With Probiotics
In further confirmation of the importance of the gut-brain axis, 18 Italian students at the University of Verona from ages 18 to 33 that took a freeze-dried mixture of four probiotics for six weeks experienced less depression, anger and fatigue compared to a control group of 15 that consumed a placebo. The positive effects continued, as discovered in follow-up testing three weeks later. The probiotics group also slept better. The probiotic bacteria blend of 4 billion colony-forming units included Lactobacillus fermentum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus plantarum and Bifidobacterium longum.

Seniors that ate more than 10 grams—about two teaspoons—of nuts a day were able to ward off normal cognitive decline and even improve their cognitive functions by up to 60 percent, according to University of South Australia researchers. The study was based on 22 years of records of 4,822 Chinese adults ages 55 and older; 17 percent of them ate nuts every day, most often peanuts. These seniors had as much as 60 percent improved cognitive function compared to those that didn’t eat nuts, and they showed better thinking, reasoning and memory. “Nuts are known to be high in healthy fats, protein and fiber with nutritional properties that can lower cholesterol and improve cognitive health,” says study author Ming Li.
Get Eyes Checked to Detect Early Alzheimer’s
With the aid of a new infrared camera technology called optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA), early Alzheimer’s disease can be detected by checking the back of the eyes for weakened and decreased blood vessels, reports a new study. Northwestern Medicine researchers reached the conclusion by comparing the vessels in the eyes of 32 people that exhibited the forgetfulness typical of early-stage Alzheimer’s with those of another 32 people with normal cognitive abilities. The vascular changes were detected non-invasively, without the need for dyes or expensive MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scans. The technology quantifies capillary changes in great detail and with unparalleled resolution, making the eye an ideal mirror for what is going on in the brain. Early detection of Alzheimer’s is critical because existing therapies are more effective if they are started before extensive brain damage and cognitive decline have occurred.

Wonder Weed Hemp to the Rescue at Detox Sites
Cannabis is enjoying a renaissance of sorts, and one new application for hemp, the no-buzz industrial variety used in fabrics, oils and foods, is cleaning nuclear radiation from toxic soil and removing metals like cadmium, lead, mercury and other pollutants via phytoremediation. Allison Beckett, a cultivation expert at Marijuana.com, says, “Industrial hemp has been used in areas of high radiation, such as Fukushima, [in Japan,] with promising results. Not only does hemp pull toxic, heavy metals from the soil, it actually improves soil structure, making it usable as productive farmland again. Plus, hemp is a vigorous plant that absorbs CO2 rapidly, making it an encouraging solution to climate change.” Hemp phytoremediation has been used in Italy to clean up the small town of Taranto, where a steel plant has been leaking dioxin into the air and soil. The Pennsylvania Industrial Hemp Council and Lehigh University, in Bethlehem, are running a project to test the process in an arsenic-contaminated area in Upper Saucon Township that once harbored a zinc mine.

I know you knew that was coming. But what if I said to do something fun, like dance or swim or run around the park with your kids? See, that’s not so bad. Small tweaks can add up to big changes for better health
E
by Celeste DeCamps
veryone is looking for a shortcut to good health—a life hack that would simplify our to-do list when it comes to feeling and looking better. Just say the words “diet and exercise” to someone, and you can almost hear the internal groan. Who has time to plan out nutritious meals and make regular trips to the gym? Obviously, someone who has no responsibilities for anyone or anything except himself. What’s the answer? How can we make time for ourselves without adding more stress to our already stressful day? How can we stop reading this article before it asks us to do something we don’t want to do?
Whoops, too late.
If the idea of overhauling your entire life is overwhelming, try tackling that big goal incrementally, with small changes. You can make a tweak here and a tweak there and see good results without having to deal with the anxiety of adopting an entire health regimen all at once. This issue of Natural Awakenings focuses on the gut—one component of our internal system that definitely needs more love. It’s a good place to start. So here’s my suggested change for this week:
Eat more fruits and veggies.
Did you know that consuming two servings of fruit and three servings of vegetables per day helps reduce the growth of “bad” bacteria in the gut and increase the concentration of “good” bifidobacteria? Until recently, I didn’t either. But making this simple change to your daily diet is not hard. Just throw in a couple of pieces of fruit and add some flavorful veggies to your meals. Next week try another small change. Then try another one the week after that. (Or don’t. I’m not very demanding.) Here are a couple of ideas:
I know you can do that. If you’re indoors a lot, take a break and get outside. Ideally, try to find some trees to hang out with. Being out in nature and taking a moment for yourself goes a long way to feeling better overall. We can go the whole day holding our breath, running from one place to another. Stopping to breathe gives us a chance to slow down, center ourselves and quiet our busy minds. It doesn’t have to be hard to fit diet and exercise into our daily lives, and it’s not selfish to take care of ourselves. In fact, it’s important to develop healthy habits so that we stay strong for ourselves and our families. When we feel good, we have more energy to be there for everyone else. Now, who wants to go dancing? Celeste DeCamps is a motivational speaker. She shares a lifetime experience of stage dance and movement through engaging stories and fun audience interaction. Take Niraj Ray, whose company Cultivate the City is working to transform urban food deserts in the nation’s capital into thriving local food systems. “We want to get more people interested in growing their own food and show them how they can grow more
with less square footage through vertical gardens and sustainable techniques like [soilless] hydroponic systems,” says Ray. Cultivate the City manages numerous gardens for clients around Washington, D.C., from elementary school gardens where kids learn to grow, cook and eat nutritious food to corporate gardens inside a new office building for lender Fannie Mae’s employee café. One of its crown jewels is a 6,500-square-foot rooftop garden on the Nationals Park baseball stadium, where edible flowers end up in cocktails and organic produce feeds fine diners and VIP ticket holders. Ray grew his business organically, fueled by passion and curiosity, rather than any horticultural background. “I grew up in NYC, where I had nothing to grow on. When I moved to Florida for grad school, I had a huge backyard to play around with,” says Ray. Like many other urban farms, Cultivate the City offers a seasonal farm subscription known as a community supported agriculture (CSA) program that allows city dwellers to buy directly from local producers. Ray’s rooftop greenhouse, located on top of a local hardware store that sells his edible plants at retail, offers all the fixings for a healthy, diverse diet: hydroponic towers of leafy greens, trays of microgreens for corporate clients, specialty varieties of hot peppers for the company’s hot sauce and stacking cubes of an albino strawberry variety that Ray crossbred himself. “There are so many ways to contribute to urban farming, from aquaponics to vermicomposting; it’s about finding your niche,” he says.
Growing Up With Vertical Farming
By 2050, it’s estimated that 9 billion people will be living on the planet—7 billion in cities. “City planners need innovative solutions like vertical farming to feed the growing population. We can grow at scale, with minimum space and environmental impact,” says Wendy Coleman, who began her California-based business LA Urban Farms in 2013. Today, Coleman’s team works with chefs, resorts, hotels, universities, greenhouses and corporate clients like Google and Ikea to set up aeroponic tower gardens across the U.S. and Europe. With aeroponics, nutrient-enriched water is pumped through a garden tower to shower the roots of plants suspended in air. “It actually uses 90 percent less water than conventional growing, which is a huge benefit in a place like California, and avoids any kind of agricultural runoff,” says Coleman. In conjunction with urban farming partners, the business churns out 30,000 seedlings a month using aeroponic technology to grow for their diverse client base and working with chefs to plan seasonal menus around their produce. Aeroponics and other innovative farm technologies are transforming spaces in cities across the U.S., reclaiming peripheral and idle spaces like alleys and warehouses to grow herbs and vegetables in abundance, using 90 percent less land by growing vertically, notes Coleman. “With our gardens, diners can see their food growing at their table; they get such a personal connection with their food. It’s an interactive way for hotels and restaurants to demonstrate their commitment to local, sustainable food,” she says.

“I had a backyard garden that wasn’t doing so well, and I thought it was the lack of pollinators, so I got bees; but then I realized I was just a bad gardener,” quips master beekeeper John Coldwell, of Fort Lauderdale. Since this humble beginning in 2012 with a few backyard hives, Coldwell and his wife Teresa have been leading a movement to repurpose public land for “microapiaries” and provide apiary education for youth and adults throughout South Florida. Through their

They’ve worked successfully with parks, airports, golf clubs and country clubs to put honeybee habitats on site. Urban beekeeping works in synergy with city farms, as honeybees forage up to five miles for food, and in so doing pollinate a lot of crops. Seventy of the top 100 human food crops are pollinated by bees, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. “We often hear people say their garden is doing better than it has in years, thanks to the apiaries nearby,” says John Coldwell. The challenges of growing at scale are a recurrent theme among urban farmers. Ian Marvy, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) outreach specialist for the greater New York City area, ran his own urban farm, grossing six figures for 14 years. However, Marvy says most farmers growing in the city aren’t operating at a profitable scale or producing enough for everyone to eat local. Even so, locally grown produce is a booming market in New York City. Greenmarket, founded in 1976, operates more than 50 farmers’ markets, limited to vendors that grow within a 200-mile radius, some of whom take home five figures on a good day, says Marvy. Interest in growing at the community level has also mushroomed, adds Marvy, who estimates that 90 percent of the city’s more than 500 school gardens weren’t there 15 years ago when he started this work. “The USDA has a huge opportunity here and nationally to make cities more sustainable and feed more people. I’m really excited and committed to that,” he says. While urban agriculture efforts are sometimes criticized for catering to upper income residents that can afford to pay top dollar for specialty items like microgreens, many businesses and organizations are July 2019

hose that have never nurtured more than a houseplant shouldn’t be intimidated, says Wendy Coleman, founder of LA Urban Farms. “Growing food is easy and doesn’t require any special background,” says Coleman, who was green to growing when she started her business six years ago. When growing commercially, find a niche, says Niraj Ray, of Cultivate the City. The company grows plants of ethnic or cultural significance to appeal to Asian, African and Latino populations, from the nutrition-packed moringa to okra, a staple of both Indian and African cooking, given it is a growing market for immigrant populations not served by most traditional garden centers. Seek natural allies like sustainability-minded chefs to bolster an urban ag business. The farm-to-fork chef ’s movement has been a boon for beekeepers and farmers, with chefs acting as patrons of the farms, according to beekeeping expert Teresa Coldwell. Sette Bello Ristorante, an Italian restaurant in Fort Lauderdale, funds vertical gardens at a community garden where the Coldwells have hives so its chef can have pure organic food like squash blossoms pollinated by local bees. Urban farming has its pleasures and rewards, but can also bring hardships. Ray struggles with employee turnover when newbie farmers face the realities of working in the heat and rain, even from a sleek, trendy, rooftop garden.

In the wake of the 2003-09 excavation of the Battery’s woodland, including the removal of more than 80 mature trees, The Battery Urban Farm was created to help heal the wound. Now the farm educates and empowers our community to make healthier eating choices and plant perennial gardens. Its mission is to inspire organic food cultivation and proper waste management. Square Roots Urban Growers is a foundation for next-gen leaders in urban farming. With society adopting greener lifestyles, future entrepreneurs in urban agriculture can take advantage of this opportunity to help our city progress for years to come. In addition to being a national historic landmark, the New York Botanical Garden provides education through horticulture and plant science programs. It also conducts wide-ranging research led by the International Plant Science Center and offers beautiful displays of its natural collections through its gardens and landscapes. United Community Centers created the East New York Farms project to address food injustice in our city. Their efforts to build local, sustainable agriculture and communityled economic development are powered by the many youth, farmers, gardeners and entrepreneurs who share the same goals. . Green Thumb, a program created by NYC Parks, is the largest community gardening program in the nation, offering programming and material support to more than 550 community gardens in New York. Located in all five boroughs, these green spaces are used for relaxation, community meetings, full-fledged farming or a mix of everything. As the trend toward sustainable urban agriculture grows, the line between urban living and farming gets a little blurrier. Thanks to these 10 organizations, and many other farms and gardens within our city, we now know that anyone can make this push toward a greener lifestyle.

avender’s versatility makes the fragrance one of the most highly coveted products in the quickly expanding essential oil market. While the potential of essential oils is yet to be fully understood, as clinical trials are just beginning, many experts and consumers believe lavender oil eases tension, heals skin and can even promote restful sleep. Like other essential oils, lavender interacts with the body beyond simply emitting a perceptible fragrance. A 2013 article published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information concluded that “continuous exposure to lavender essential 22

oils for seven days significantly inhibited anxiety- and depression-like behaviors” in mice and resulted in their “increased social interaction and decreased aggressive behavior.” Essential oils can’t cure disease, but they can improve lifestyles, says Joshua Thomerson, CEO of Anatta Marketplace, an online global market that sells pure, sustainably sourced essential oils. But not all lavender is equal, he says. Consumers planning to use the fragrance to enhance their lifestyle must be certain they are purchasing a quality product. “Not all lavender is lavender,’’ he says.

“Different batches can have very different chemical compositions. Locally sourced material for scientific studies is often not even the same species of lavender—and even if it were, the percentages of each individual molecule can change drastically from one batch to another, based on growing conditions.”
Look for the Latin Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is grown worldwide, primarily in Bulgaria, China, France, Ukraine and Australia. The plant is hardy; it can survive most conditions and
adapts to its environment with little human intervention. While there are inexpensive substitutes, Lavandula angustifolia is the only true lavender, Thomerson says. Consumers of lavender essential oil should search for the Latin name on the bottle before purchasing it. “People should buy from responsible companies who do proper testing and sourcing to ensure the quality is what you are expecting, and that the farmers are compensated fairly,” he adds. “Steer away from lavender as a commercial profile. If you want pure quality, always look for Lavandula angustifolia.’’ Anatta has been a game-changer in the essential oil marketplace, he says. The company allows its customers to meet and communicate with the farmers that grow the plants used in its products, and it pays its farmers 50 percent or more than competitors. “Anatta allows customers to purchase the highest possible quality essential oils, while allowing us to inject a massive amount of investment into the betterment of the production and the farmers’ lives in the communities we support,’’ he says. recall of your regular dreams. We’re all dreaming every night, every time we have a REM cycle, about every 90 minutes that we are asleep, even if you don’t remember your dreams. It’s easier for most people to improve their dream recall. It’s as simple as saying to yourself before bed, “I want to remember my dreams tonight.” The more intention you have, the more you think about your dreams during the day, can be enough to trigger you to better remember your dreams. If you pay close attention to your environment, looking and examining it and asking yourself whether it’s real, you will then ask yourself the same question in a dream.
How do you feel lucid dreaming can improve our overall well-being?
You can practice a speech you are worried about. If you are an athlete, you can mentally prepare. It can help with your mental health. You can use lucid dreams to confront your demons; you can summon someone that you want to have a conversation with and practice talking with them. They are awe-inspiring. Knowing you are lying in bed, but also feeling, physically, that you are in another place, is very powerful.
What steps can we take to improve our ability to recall dreams?
Keep a dream journal. It doesn’t have to be pen and paper; you can speak your dreams into your phone in the morning or in the middle of the night if you wake up… whatever you can do to train yourself to hold onto them because if you don’t remember them when you wake up, then they will fade pretty quickly. As soon as I started keeping a dream journal, I was amazed at how many I was remembering. When getting started, make sure to write something every morning, even “I don’t remember anything.” The habits will become ingrained and you’ll start to remember dreams. Promising Research
Recent studies have shown that vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) can improve quality of life for individuals suffering from numerous conditions. One type is a device that can be implanted by a neurosurgeon, which sends electrical impulses to the vagus nerve in children that suffer from seizures and adults with depression as a supplemental treatment when surgery or medications are not possible or effective. There is also a handheld, non-invasive VNS option called gammaCore, a U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved device that offers hope for sufferers of cluster and
migraine headaches. Its effectiveness for chronic pain management, as well as in cases of epilepsy and depression, was published in the Neuromodulation Journal in 2015. PTSD researcher Imanuel Lerman, M.D., and his colleagues with the Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System, found that VNS affects areas of the brain responsible for processing emotional pain. The findings, published in the journal PLOS ONE earlier this year, also show that VNS delays the brain’s response to pain signals in individuals with PTSD.

When it comes to the vagus nerve, anxiety is physical. Post-traumatic stress is rooted in neurobiology and experienced in the body, not just the mind, says Arielle Schwartz, Ph.D., a Boulder, Colorado-based clinical psychologist and author of The Complex PTSD Workbook: A Mind-Body Approach to Regaining Emotional Control and Becoming Whole. “This is why you can’t simply think or talk your way out of your trauma reactions.” According to Schwartz, “Disruptions in the gut flora, which often occur with overuse of antibiotics, can have a significant impact on mental health. An imbalance in the gut can lead to an inflammatory response in the immune system and a wide range of disruptive symptoms.” Aylward notes that 95 percent of the body’s mood-boosting chemical serotonin resides in the enteric nervous system, which governs the function of the gastrointestinal tract. “The brain-gut axis is becoming increasingly important as a therapeutic target for psychiatric and GI disorders,” she says. Daniel J. Siegel, M.D., clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine and founding co-director of UCLA’s Mindful Awareness Research Center, explains the trauma loop. “Developmental trauma impairs the integrative circuits of the brain and nervous system—the prefrontal cortex. When this happens, the brain will be hyperalert, interpreting some non-threatening situations as threatening. “Learning to be aware of our internal state and learning calming techniques helps to regulate the autonomic nervous system and can go a long way,” says Siegel.
“High ventral vagal tone means having a state of calm.”
Vagus Power Everyone can benefit from increased vagal tone, which goes hand-in-hand with engaging the parasympathetic nervous system for optimum equilibrium at the cellular level. Acupuncture, chiropractic—with a focus on the cranial nerves—massage, meditation, singing, laughing loudly, chanting mantras, gentle yoga and exercise, positive social interactions, belly breathing and chanting all make the vagus nerve a happy camper. These activities promote relaxation and help to decrease inflammation. “As a certified yoga instructor, I can attest to a wide range of
natural vagus nerve stimulation techniques, especially using the breath,” says Schwartz. “Diaphragmatic breathing creates a gentle massage across your digestive organs, releases the diaphragm and stimulates nerve fibers within the lungs. Heart rate is reduced.” Brief exposure to cold water or cold air improves vagal tone and is a good option when anxiety is high. Eating cold-water fish like wild salmon or other foods high in omega-3 fatty acids such as walnuts, seaweed, hemp, flax or chia seeds provides vagal nourishment. Vagus-Nourishing Diet Tips Advice from gut health expert Hannah Aylward: 4 Eat plenty of vegetables, high-quality proteins, fiber and healthy fats. 4 A diet low in sugar and processed carbohydrates supports healthy vagus nerve function by maintaining a healthy gut microbiome. 4 Practice intermittent fasting, which stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system (not recommended for people suffering from adrenal fatigue or high stress). 4 Take probiotics. Lactobacillus has been shown to increase GABA via stimulation of the vagus nerve. Bifidobacterium longum has demonstrated it can normalize anxiety-like behavior in mice by acting through the vagus nerve.

Gut Health and the Human Energy Field How The Third Chakra Affects Physical, Emotional And Mental Health by Lisa VanOstrand
W
ith diabetes 2 at an epidemic level, our healthcare system faces unprecedented challenges related to gut function. At the Barbara Brennan School of Healing, we consider physical health issues, such as poor gut function, to be just one facet of a much more complex and comprehensive model of human existence. Our model of human existence is based on four dimensions that lie on a spectrum, from the part of us that is one with the divine to the part of us that is a human being, living here on Earth. One of these dimensions is our human energy field, or aura, which is composed of seven levels. There are seven chakras extending through the seven levels of the human energy field. In our model, the gut corresponds to the third chakra, which is at the level of the solar plexus. Let’s explore how the gut, represented by 28
New York City Edition
the third chakra, functions in the first three levels of the human energy field, which correspond to our existence in the physical world. (You can see images of levels one through three below).
The Chakra-Gut Connection Level 1 is associated with our physical wellbeing. On this level, the third chakra relates to our digestion and is supported by the foods we eat and the vitamins and minerals we take to have healthy gut function. Level 1 is composed of blue lines of light. Their brightness is a direct reflection of our physical health. Level 2 is associated with our feelings toward ourselves. The third chakra has an intimate connection with the brain. We hear this connection referenced today as the gutbrain axis—the direct and indirect pathways between our gastrointestinal system and the brain’s cognitive and emotional centers.
NA-NewYorkCity.com
While Level 2 of the human energy field is a feeling level, the third chakra on Level 2 involves feelings with a more cognitive quality, such as worry, guilt and shame. Indeed, in Chinese medicine, the emotion associated with the spleen and stomach is worry and obsessive thinking. When we are startled or surprised, we often feel that emotion directly in our stomach. (Hence the common saying “I feel like I’ve been punched in the gut.”) Some emotional events are so upsetting to our energy field that our third chakra becomes disfigured and needs restructuring. Level 2, when healthy, is composed of beautiful, bright, multicolored clouds of energy. Level 3 of the human energy field is connected to our rational mind and mental clarity. When our thoughts are clear, Level 3 is composed of lemon-yellow lines of light. When we are unclear or confused, Level 3 is dull yellow. Finally, each chakra is associated with a certain high-sense perception. The third chakra is related to our intuition, a feeling or reaction based on an instinctive emotional response. The saying “I had a gut feeling that something was wrong” is indicative of the type of high-sense perception that is associated with the third chakra.
Barbara Brennan School of Healing At the Barbara Brennan School of Healing, each year of its four-year training is dedicated to exploring one of the four dimensions of human existence. Purpose, Passion and Prosperity
order to guarantee their existence in your life. If you do know your passions, are you devoting adequate time to them every day?
How are my purpose and passion expressed in my daily work? Am I experiencing the level of prosperity that allows me to create the life I want to live?
The formula for wealth and well-being by Monica Maria Aparicio
A
re you clear about why you’re here? Does your work fulfill and satisfy you? Do you love your work but feel limited by the income it provides? Are you trying to figure out how to combine what you love to do with a way to make a living? Your reason for being alive will always be what brings you the greatest joy and satisfaction if you are engaged in that purpose regularly. When your purpose and passion have nothing to do with your income, you probably aren’t spending much time doing what you love to do. This disconnect can have a detrimental effect on your well-being, resulting in stress, anxiety and even physical disease. Unfortunately, the disconnect between purpose and income is a reality for many
people. For others, the disconnect exists in their inability to translate passion into economic stability and ongoing prosperity. To determine where you are in this equation of purpose, passion and prosperity, ask yourself these questions:
Do I know my purpose? Your purpose is who you are, what comes naturally to you. It may be so matter-of-fact for you that you don’t realize that it’s your purpose. If you do know your purpose, are you expressing it daily?
What brings me passion? Your passions are the things that stir you to take action, the things for which you would be willing to endure some level of suffering in

Prosperity is about more than just money and financial growth. It’s a state of well-being resulting from the experience and feeling of overflow. When you are connected to who you are, express that identity to the world daily, and understand the value you are providing others by doing so, prosperity is inevitable. Life is too short for you not to be living your fullest life, where you get to express your passion and experience well-being and wealth as rewards for your contribution. The Grace of Abundance
Five Practices to Create a More Abundant Life
A
by Meriflor Toneatto
bundance means plenty—a flowing of love, vitality, wealth, joy, prosperity, success and more. GRACE is an acronym representing five practices that can magnify abundance in all areas of life, including finances.
G = Gratitude There is tremendous power in being grateful, because what we focus on expands. Gratitude opens our heart to receive and give blessings. This puts us in a space to have more things to be grateful for. Practicing gratitude can be as simple as saying, “I am grateful for…” or “I am thankful for…” If we find ourselves in a negative state, practice gratitude even for as brief a period as 60 seconds. It will positively shift our emotion, thereby allowing us to be open to abundance.
R = Receiving To graciously receive can be as simple as accepting a compliment. Another way to receive is by requesting our heart’s desire. There is nothing wrong with wanting more. The truth is that we can have more—as much as we are willing to receive.
A = Alignment The key way to get into alignment for more abundance is to know our purpose, follow our passion and work on releasing internal fears and doubts.
When we are in alignment, everything flows. There is ease and doors open for us. People, money and resources will show up on our path to help us achieve our goals. Therefore, we must always be awake to our goodness and take inspired actions to manifest our desires into reality.
C = Commitment Commit to gifting ourselves with an abundant mindset because our mindset is critical to our success. One way to quickly shift our mindset to the positive is to concentrate on our desire and ask ourselves, “What do I have to believe for this to be true?” Our mind will creatively generate many possibilities that can get us excited, which then shifts how we think and feel to what is positive. As we do this, we will also create greater confidence in the knowledge that the universe is always working in our favor.
E = Expression Express our passion by first doing what we love. Then find a way to use our passion, purpose and life to serve others. When we do this, our world, our financial abundance and our joy will expand exponentially. Transient Leaky Gut Syndrome A non-chronic condition that can cause big problems for the body by Michael Biamonte
T
he word transient means “not lasting for a long time, passing in time, or not staying in the same place for a long time.” For our purposes, then, transient leaky gut is a leaky gut episode that can manifest for short to moderate periods of time and then clear up, only to return again. The key is, it’s not chronic. Leaky gut syndrome has been well described in scientific literature as increased intestinal permeability that can accompany various intestinal diseases as well as severe trauma or major surgery. In these conditions, leaky gut syndrome results in a poorer outcome for the patient. However, it also can accompany a much wider range of health conditions.
32
New York City Edition
For example, research has shown that a significant percentage of children with autism have increased intestinal permeability. Likewise, studies I’ve conducted demonstrate that almost three out of four children with attention deficit disorder also have leaky gut syndrome–most without any obvious intestinal symptoms. Other conditions, such as chronic fatigue syndrome, food or airborne allergies, chemical sensitivities or intolerances, and arthritic pain in the joints and connective tissue, are signs of leaky gut.
Causes and Effects
The intestinal cells are nutritionally demanding, and so a lack of nutritional vari-
NA-NewYorkCity.com
ety can result in a leaky gut. Essential fatty acids; phospholipids (such as lecithin); the amino acid L-glutamine; vitamins (especially certain B vitamins); antioxidants; and micronutrients (especially zinc) are all important for maintaining the integrity of the intestine’s leak-proof lining. The typical North American diet, therefore, is not ideal for avoiding leaky gut syndrome. Some medications (especially nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and antibiotics); excessive alcohol consumption; food allergies or intolerances; and overgrowth of undesirable intestinal microbes are also commonly associated with leaky gut syndrome. This syndrome results in large quantities of
partially digested food molecules, as well as debris from bacteria and yeast organisms, passing directly through the intestinal wall and into the bloodstream and lymph. It has been scientifically demonstrated that live microorganisms can pass directly through the intestinal wall by the thousands when there is a leaky gut. It isn’t hard to imagine that leaky gut syndrome can cause a significant amount of stress on the internal workings of the body.
Testing and Treatment
There are several ways to detect leaky gut syndrome. Nutritionally oriented health-care practitioners can order the lactulose-mannitol intestinal permeability test (the original test for leaky gut syndrome) or the new intestinal permeability breath test. In addition, a comprehensive stool test can measure areas of intestinal health to infer leaky gut. An especially promising treatment is Ultra GI Replenish Medical Food, which is specially formulated to support the increased nutritional needs of patients with compromised gut function and malabsorption associated with some of the most challenging digestive disorders. Designed to “reboot” the gut by restoring a healthy foundation, it offers a targeted nutritional approach to replenishing the intestinal lining and supporting the beneficial gastrointestinal (GI) microbiota established through early nourishment. Ultra GI Replenish features a key prebiotic known as 2’-fucosyllactose (2’-FL), which is identical to one found in breast milk. Breakthrough research suggests that 2’-FL may be significant in promoting a healthy balance of beneficial GI microbiota. This advanced medical food also features a unique combination of macro- and micronutrients to complement a carefully designed dietary plan and deliver a lifestyle medicine approach unlike any other.
