ADVERTISER INDEX
A Happy Heart, A Healthy Life
There’s something magical about the heart—not just as the tireless organ that keeps us alive but as the emotional center of joy, love and connection. A happy heart is a healthy heart, and as we move through the seasons of life, taking care of both our physical and emotional well-being becomes more important than ever. There’s no better time to talk about matters of the heart than in the month of February, for the obvious Valentine’s hoopla.
Heart health isn’t just about numbers on a chart—it’s about the daily choices that shape our vitality and longevity. Movement, laughter, meaningful connections, and wholesome nutrition all play a role in keeping our hearts strong. A brisk walk in the fresh air, a deep conversation with a friend, or even a moment of gratitude can do wonders for reducing stress and improving cardiovascular health. Studies show that positive emotions, kindness and social connection can lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease. When we care for our emotional well-being, we also care for our hearts.
And then, of course, there’s chocolate—a little indulgence that comes with big benefits and personally my go-to treat! Dark chocolate, rich in flavonoids, has been shown to support heart health by improving circulation, lowering blood pressure, and even reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. These powerful antioxidants help combat inflammation and improve overall vascular function. It’s proof that sometimes life’s sweetest pleasures can also be good for us.
But true heart health goes beyond diet and exercise. It’s about nurturing the things that make us feel alive—whether it’s music, art, time in nature, or simply surrounding ourselves with people who lift us up. So, as you go about your days, I encourage you to nourish your heart in every way possible. Find joy in the simple moments, fuel your body with care, embrace movement, and yes—savor that square of dark chocolate. Because a happy heart isn’t just about beating strong—it’s about living fully.

The Risks of Unnecessary Dental Extractions and the Importance of Holistic Care
Jonathan Richter, DDS, FAGD
A recent investigation by KFF Health News and CBS News has brought attention to troubling dental practices, including the unnecessary extraction of healthy, treatable teeth to profit from dental implant procedures. The report reveals that many patients seeking solutions for dental concerns were advised to undergo fullmouth extractions followed by implants— even when less invasive, tooth-preserving treatments could have been a better option.
This pattern highlights the growing trend of prioritizing profit over patient well-being in the dental industry. Experts emphasize the importance of seeking second opinions and thoroughly exploring all treatment options with trusted dental professionals before committing to irreversible procedures like extractions and implants.
Patients are encouraged to explore conservative, tooth-preserving treatments, as they tend to carry fewer risks and complications compared to surgical interventions.
Dr. Jonathan Richter, a dual-trained holistic periodontist and prosthodontist and Natural Awakenings advertising partner, underscores the value of preserving natural teeth. With advanced training from NYU College of Dentistry and the University of Pennsylvania’s Perio/Prostho Program, Richter integrates holistic methodologies into periodontics, cosmetic, restorative, and implant dentistry.
At Cariodontal, Dr. Richter and his experienced team create personalized, holistic wellness treatment plans that support overall health while preventing further damage to teeth. Their approach identifies issues before they become serious, focusing on safe, natural and minimally invasive treatments using non-toxic, bioidentical materials that promote optimal oral health.
Richter urges caution when consulting general dentists claiming expertise in periodontal and implant restoration. “Finding the right restoration approach requires the guidance and expertise of a specialist,” he advises.
For more information or to schedule a consultation, contact Cariodontal at 516-282-0310 or visit Cariodontal.com. To learn more about this investigation, visit KFFHealthNews.org. See ad, back cover.

How to Eliminate the Herpes Viruses Permanently, Once and for All!
From the desk of Dr. Howard Robins at The Healing Center in New York City
Did You Have Chickenpox or a “Cold Sore”?
Most everyone answers “yes” to this question. If you answered yes, then you have a herpes infection. Both types of viral infections are easily transferred by contact with someone that has a current outbreak. You likely may have both!
Herpes zoster (HZ), commonly known as shingles, is a viral disease characterized by a painful skin rash with blisters in a limited area one side of the body, often in a stripe. The initial infection causes the illness chickenpox, which usually occurs in children and young adults. Once the chickenpox is gone, the virus is not eliminated from the body and can go on to cause shingles. HZ is not the same disease as herpes simplex type 1 and 2, despite the similar name, though both HZ and herpes simplex belong to the same viral family.
HZ becomes dormant in some of our nerve cells without causing any symp toms. Many years after a chickenpox infec tion, the virus may break out of nerve cells and cause a viral infection of the skin in the area around the nerve. The virus may spread from one nerve to another causing a painful rash. Although the rash usually heals within two to four weeks, most people experience nerve pain for months or years, a condition called “postherpetic neuralgia.” In the past, outbreaks usually occurred in the elderly, but now it is common for anyone at any age that is under great stress or has a compromised immune system.
to time, especially in times of stress, using alcohol, or when eating foods high in a protein called L-arginine, found commonly in nuts and chocolate, among other foods.
It Can Be Eliminated!
Treatments with antivirals can reduce outbreaks and may alleviate the severity of symptomatic episodes but will not get rid of the infection. Medical ozone is the only medicine known to destroy and rid the body of this horrible infection.
Please don’t believe the commercials on television saying you can never get rid of it. Though with no promises or guarantees, medical ozone has been used all over the world to treat infections that normally cannot be fixed, i.e., herpes in all its forms. Medical ozone is a gas that when it enters the body intravenously acts like “glue” to all viruses, bacteria, fungus, yeast and mold. It destroys or inactivates them so the body can remove them completely.
Most importantly, medical ozone does it without harmful adverse reactions or side effects so typical with pharmaceuticals. In more than 50 countries, over 45,000 physicians have been using it worldwide for over 70 years to successfully and safely treat diseases such as herpes.
So, don’t give up hope and don’t wait! It is absolutely possible to eliminate herpes from your body.
Herpes simplex 1 and 2 cause the oral or genital forms of what we commonly simply call “herpes.” It also spreads in a way similar to the HZ virus. Herpes simplex is a viral disease caused by both herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2. Oral herpes, the visible symptoms of which are often called “cold sores” or “fever blisters,” is an infection of the face or mouth. Oral herpes is the most common form, and genital herpes is the second most common form of infection. However, both types can be found both orally and genitally! Recurrent outbreaks may occur from time

Holistic Lifestyle for Dogs
How Herbs, Mushrooms and the Outdoors Can Help
by Rita Hogan
Caring for a dog holistically involves supporting their body, mind and environment in a balanced, natural way that emphasizes prevention and harmony, rather than merely addressing symptoms. Incorporating herbs and mushrooms into a dog’s daily routine, and learning which are most beneficial throughout the year, are effective ways to achieve this balance. The idea is to support immunity and other internal healing mechanisms before problems arise.
It is helpful to adopt a “dog-as-ecosystem” approach, where all aspects of their wellbeing are seen as interconnected. A dog’s organs, nervous system, physical health, emotional state and environment continually
influence one another. For example, stress can trigger a cascade of responses, such as overstimulating the nervous system, leading to digestive upset or a weakened immune system. Similarly, exposure to toxins might contribute to behavioral changes because the nervous system is inextricably related to the liver’s role in detoxification. Herbs can address these connections and help maintain balance across a dog’s entire ecosystem.
Choosing the Right Herbs and Mushrooms
Because emotional health is closely tied to physical health, calming herbs and mushrooms can help maintain physical balance by reducing inflammation, supporting digestion and detoxification, and enhancing overall organ function. Here are some of the most effective choices.
• Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata)
• Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis)
• Dandelion root (Taraxacum officinale) also stimulates bile production, which aids in the digestion of fats and proper stool formation.
• Milk thistle (Silybum marianum). Use milk thistle seed rather than a standardized extract of silymarin, the active ingredient in milk thistle.
• Nettle leaf (Urtica dioica/urens) also provides anti-inflammatory vitamins and minerals.
• Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) directly impacts the nervous system by reducing stress-induced gastrointestinal discomfort.
• Lion’s mane (Hericium erinaceus) modulates the immune system, the gut and the nervous system.
• Calendula (Calendula officinalis) improves coat condition, liver function and helps balance the microbiome.
• Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)
Stress and Anxiety Herbal Infusion
1 tsp dried dandelion root (Taraxacum officinale)
1 tsp dried milk thistle seeds (Silybum marianum)
1 tsp dried nettle leaf (Urtica dioica/urens) 1 cup boiling water
Combine dandelion root, milk thistle seeds and nettle leaf in a shatterproof glass container. Pour one cup of almost boiling water over the herbs and cover to let them steep for 15 minutes. Strain, reserving the liquid, and cool. Give one tablespoon for every 20 pounds of body weight. It can be mixed with food.
Nature Nurture
Along with a daily infusion of herbs and mushrooms in a dog’s diet, spending time in nature will benefit them tremendously. Whether walking in the woods, playing fetch at the park or lying in the grass, this connection to Earth provides grounding, mental stimulation, physical exercise and emotional nourishment. Feeding our furry best friends natural, calming ingredients and spending time with them outdoors is the ideal recipe for a balanced, happy and healthy life.

Another Leap Forward in Dental Healing: REDEFINING MODERN DENTISTRY WITHOUT BOUNDARIES
In today’s competitive and ever-evolving world, choosing a dental professional with an expanded skill set is not just a preference but a necessity. Such dental experts bring versatility, innovation and a unique ability to address dental restorative challenges that other dentists may avoid. Unlike those who strictly adhere to conventional practices, professionals with diverse expertise can bridge gaps, think critically, and deliver creative solutions across various treatment domains. Their ability to adapt to unforeseen circumstances and approach problems from multiple perspectives ensures that no treatment opportunity is overlooked. Furthermore, they possess the resilience and commitment to take on complex cases others might deem unmanageable.
At Integrative Dental Specialists, Dr. Etess and his team pride themselves on providing the personalized attention you deserve. They deliver the highest level of dental expertise, meticulously performed with skill and precision, without compromise. The practice is committed to achieving outstanding long-term functional and aesthetic dental results.
All too often, patients are told they need a root canal or that their tooth cannot be saved. This can be particularly distressing when it involves a front tooth, as it significantly affects one’s smile and selfconfidence. However, saving your natural tooth with advanced restorative dental techniques is essential for both your oral health and overall well-being. Natural teeth are designed to last a lifetime, and preserving them maintains the structural integrity of your mouth, which is vital for proper chewing, speaking and maintaining facial aesthetics. Tooth loss can cause surrounding teeth to shift, leading to misalignment, bite problems, and additional strain on the remaining teeth, often resulting in further complications.
While dental implants are a reliable solution for replacing lost teeth, they are not natural teeth and come with their own longterm challenges. Full-mouth dental implant reconstruction, often referred to as All-on-4, is an option for patients with severely compromised teeth. However, ensuring that full-arch or full-mouth dental implants are placed correctly requires advanced expertise. Dr. Etess is residency-trained in dental implantology, a credential that far surpasses the qualifications of weekend courses often taken abroad. When it comes to your health, expertise truly matters.
Advanced restorative dentistry provides the ability to preserve and restore even severely damaged teeth through innovative techniques, such as composite bonding and biomimetic methods that replicate the tooth’s natural structure. When necessary— and only after all other options have been exhausted—biological root canal therapy or regenerative procedures like ToothRegenesis can help maintain optimal tooth health. Natural-looking all-ceramic crowns, advanced periodontal gum rejuvenation, and next-generation bone grafting procedures allow Dr. Etess to restore your mouth to its ideal condition. These techniques not
only save or replace damaged teeth, but also restore full functionality and a youthful, natural appearance to your smile.
What sets Dr. Etess apart is his unwavering commitment to exceeding expectations by listening to patients' needs and delivering unmatched care and unparalleled dentistry. Utilizing his extensive specialist training and exceptional expertise, Dr. Etess provides personalized, premier unrivaled dental treatment with accessibility and compassion.
Staying at the forefront of dental advancements is a top priority for Dr. Etess. To ensure patients' safety and comfort, the practice employs enhanced ultraviolet air and surface disinfection protocols. If you seek the finest, safest, healthiest and most predictable results supported by the latest technology, contact Integrative Dental Specialists to schedule your appointment today.

A Caravan of Love
How Angel Moreno Built a Nourishing Dream of Healing and Community
When Angel Moreno opened Caravan of Dreams in 1991, Manhattan had no fully organic, vegan restaurants. Guided by a vision of creating a kinder, healthier world—for people, animals and the planet—Moreno set out to offer more than just meals. He dreamed of a sanctuary where compassion and consciousness could thrive, blending delicious, sustainable food with live music, yoga and meditation to nourish both the body and soul.
Thirty-three years later, it’s safe to say his dream has flourished. Caravan of Dreams is not just a restaurant; it’s a vibrant community hub filled with joy, healing and connection.
From the beginning, Moreno and his dedicated team have been committed to using only the best ingredients. “All our offerings are pure, organic and wholesome—grown and made without pesticides, fertilizers, antibiotics, hormones, preservatives, flavorings or colors,” Moreno explains with pride. The menu is also certified fully kosher, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the nourishing offerings. For those looking to unwind,
Caravan features a full-service bar with a tempting selection of organic cocktails, wines and beers. And every evening, the restaurant comes alive with the sounds of eclectic live music, creating an atmosphere that feels like a celebration of life itself.
For Moreno, Caravan of Dreams is more than a business—it’s his life’s purpose. “When I moved to America in 1981, I carried with me a dream,” he shares. “In this dream, I brought together all the things I love: good food, beautiful music, friends and family, cheerful smiles, and laughter—all under one roof. In my heart, I called this place ‘Caravan of Dreams.’”
Before opening the restaurant, Moreno dedicated himself to studying nutrition, herbology and spirituality. “I’ve always believed food is medicine—it has the power to heal,” he says. “I wanted to create a space where people could come to replenish themselves with pure, organic vegan food—both raw and cooked options—that restore the mind, body and spirit. Thankfully, I’ve been able to do that here, alongside a community that inspires me every day.”
Moreno’s dedication to innovation and quality is unwavering. He and his chefs stay ahead of nutritional trends, constantly refining the menu to reflect the latest discoveries in health and wellness. And while Caravan of Dreams is known for its elevated experience, it remains accessible. The $16 lunch special, which includes a complimentary salad and soup, and $3 beer with an entrée are just a couple of ways Moreno ensures his dream remains within reach for everyone.
Though the menu and offerings may evolve, one thing will never change: Moreno’s commitment to spreading love and healing, one plate at a time. “This isn’t just a restaurant,” he says. “It’s a place where people come to feel nourished, connected and uplifted. It’s my way of making the world a better place.”
Caravan of Dreams is located at 405 E. 6th St., NYC. For more information, call 212254-1613 or email reservations@Caravanof Dreams.net. See ad, page 28.

Zuccini Pasta
Is it Candida?
by Dr. David Pollack
Many people have al ready heard of candida. A yeast that naturally lives in our gut, that sometimes overgrows, causing a multitude of problems. People with gut candida often have bloating—especially after eating carbs like bread and pasta. They are often sensitive to vegetables, par ticularly raw ones. Many complain of brain fog, achy joints, swelling, skin issues, fatigue, depression and anxiety, and more. Many functional medicine practitioners are obsessed with it. Every health issue, they say, must be caused by this nefarious mi croorganism. Maybe there's something else going on. Let's discuss what's really happening and strategies to combat what I would rather refer to as gut dysbiosis.
Candida is one family of yeasts that normally populates our gut and can overgrow. This often occurs due to repeated or long-term use of antibiotics, combined with a high carbohydrate diet. There are labs that claim to be able to detect which organism is overgrown. Personally, I don’t believe they can determine if a “normal” constituent of the gut is overgrown or not. In 15 years of practice, I have yet to see consistent results arising from these types of tests and treatment based on their results, which brings up many other issues. Let's examine those issues.
Gut dysbiosis is the fancy term for organisms that live in our gut that are out of balance. Our gut is naturally populated with billions of microorganisms including bacteria, yeasts and viruses. When in good health, this balance is healthy and normal. Sometimes, however, this delicate balance of tens of thousands of different organisms alters. Our gut 'flora' can become imbalanced through chronic stress, poor diet, infection, antibiotics use, and other reasons. When one of these organisms overgrows and becomes dominant it can create problems.
Here is an example of a situation I see regularly in my office. A new patient that has been to one or more other functional/holistic practitioners comes to see me after going down the rabbit hole of stool samples and other advanced testing to find they have some “overgrowth” of an organism, such as candida. The industry standard is to put them on a low carbohydrate and sugar diet. Often, they are given an anti-fungal supplement blend as well. After many months of hard dietary sacrifice and uncomfortable sensations from the antifungal, they don’t see much improvement. In fact, sometimes their symptoms got worse.
You might be wondering why this happens. Starving and using anti-fungal agents can aggravate the organism which causes them to release different toxins and compounds to survive the situation. As an example,
normally you wouldn't randomly get an infection on your hand. To get that infection, you need to damage the skin that perhaps may already be weakened by stress or a recent cold/flu. Now, to resolve that infection, you might use an antibacterial ointment or a Band-Aid. However, if you are in good health, you probably don't even need to do that. The body will heal the wound and overcome the infection. Imagine that instead of your hand there was a wound in the digestive tract—a wet place full of nutrients just endlessly arriving. An infection that was able to set in here would likely be difficult to overcome. While yeasts love sugar the most, they can eat anything. This is why the low carb strategy on its own or improperly combined often doesn’t yield significant results. The main reason is the never-ending food supply. With a gut infection, the food we eat is not being properly digested. This means the food is sitting in the digestive tract too long, giving the yeast plenty of time and food to eat. You cannot overcome a fortified and fed enemy, Sun Tzu would say.
So how do we overcome this? Beyond the infection we need to identify and repair the digestive organs that are struggling. This will give the body strength to overcome the infection. We often utilize digestive enzyme blends with special herbal formulas to repair and ease digestive function. We pair that with acupuncture, cold laser, dietary modification, and even emotional release work to deal with stress and past emotional trauma. Antimicrobials are great but without dealing with the underlying digestive organ dysfunction these issues often cannot be overcome. These issues have solutions and great health can be achieved.

The Miracle Mineral
How Magnesium Can Transform Your Health
by Dr. Jillian Finker
Magnesium is often called the “miracle mineral” for good reason. From boosting energy and improving sleep to relieving stress and supporting digestion, this essential nutrient is a powerhouse for your overall well-being.
Here’s how magnesium works its magic in the body:
• Boosts Energy: Magnesium helps convert food into energy, reducing fatigue and enhancing vitality.
• Improves Mood and Reduces Stress: It regulates neurotransmitters to promote calmness and elevate your mood.
• Eases Digestion: Magnesium citrate, in particular, relaxes digestive muscles, easing constipation and promoting regularity.
• Supports Sleep Quality: By relaxing the body and mind, magnesium helps you achieve more restful sleep. It can also reduce muscle cramps and restless leg syndrome.
• Relieves Headaches and Migraines: Magnesium deficiency is often linked to migraines, and supplementation can alleviate or even eliminate symptoms.
• Reduces Anxiety and Insomnia: Hundreds of patients have reported relief from anxiety and better sleep patterns thanks to magnesium.
While magnesium is found in foods like dark chocolate, leafy greens, nuts and beans, modern agricultural practices have depleted soil nutrients, leaving many of us deficient—even with a healthy diet.
How to Know If You’re Deficient
If you suspect a magnesium deficiency, ask your doctor for specific tests like an RBC magnesium blood level or a metabolic testing panel. These can help identify whether supplementation is needed.
Choosing the Right Magnesium for You
There are several forms of magnesium, each with unique benefits. For example:
Magnesium citrate is excellent for digestion.
Magnesium glycinate is ideal for calming the nervous system.
Magnesium malate is great for energy and muscle recovery.
With its countless benefits, magnesium truly lives up to its reputation as a miracle mineral.
Consult your naturopathic doctor to determine the best type and dosage for your individual needs.

Celebrating the Love We Share with Our Pets
by Rev. Dr. Heather Shea
Heather Shea
Valentine’s Day is a time to celebrate love in all its forms, and the bond we share with our animal companions is one of the purest. They greet us with wagging tails, gentle purrs, heartfelt rubs or soulful eyes, reminding us every day of their unwavering devotion. Whether they’re by our side during life’s joys or offering comfort in our struggles, animals have a way of touching our hearts like no other. With 66 percent of U.S. households sharing their homes with pets, it is clear they’re more than just animals; pets are our companions, friends and family.
While we delight in showering our animal companions with love, understanding their deeper needs can sometimes feel like a guessing game. What are they truly feeling? How can we support them better? This is where the unique insight of an animal communicator bridges the gap.
What is an animal communicator?
Animal communicators help people connect with their pets on a deeper level. It’s a two-way exchange of thoughts, feelings and messages, often referred to as telepathic communication. By listening, an animal communicator can get information about what your animals are thinking and feeling regarding behavioral, emotional, physical, social or transitional situations to create a more harmonious place for everyone in the household.
Why work with an animal communicator?
An animal communicator becomes a liaison between human and pets. Animals always have a reason for their behavior. Understanding the root cause provides a way forward. The work often involves everyday situations, barking, biting, food, family, friends and such.
Animal communication bridges the gap between what we see on the surface and what’s happening inside. By addressing emotional and energetic imbalances, it not only supports a pet’s physical and emotional health but also strengthens the bond we share with them.
Much of an animal communicator’s work focuses on supporting animals through significant transitions, such as welcoming a new family member, moving to a new home or stable, or adjusting to life with a new family after adoption or adjusting to a loss in the home.
Animal communicators may also be able to provide insight into how your pet is feeling or if they are in pain or discomfort. Some may play a crucial role, partnering with veterinarians, in health or end-of-life concerns helping families honor their pets and navigate the emotional complexities of illness or death and dying. While these moments can be difficult, they hold deep meaning and significance.
When we truly listen to our animals, we open the door to a deeper bond and mutual respect. Whether it’s addressing behavioral challenges, emotional trauma, or simply building a stronger connection, animal communication is a powerful tool for fostering love and understanding.
This Valentine’s Day, let’s take a moment to honor the love we share with our pets—whether through animal communication, quality time, or simply recognizing the unique ways they show their affection.
Give the gift of animal communication to yourself or a loved one. For more information, visit Everyday Knowings.com or email heather@everydayknowings. com. See ad, page 29.

The Backbone of a Flourishing Life
by Dr. Gina Marino
How do you determine whether your life is going well? Whether you’re happy and fulfilled versus merely going through the motions? Whether you’re growing and developing as a person versus merely expressing more of the same old, same old? In short, when the alarm goes off in the morning does the prospect of a new day cause you to be filled with excited anticipation and a sense of being actively engaged? Or do you wish you could bury yourself beneath the blankets and put off your daily routine for as long as possible?
“Flourishing” is a term long used by philosophers to describe a state of ongoing positive engagement with life. When a person is flourishing, she is not only interested and participating but also widening and expanding her range and her scope. Most of us are familiar with the concept of flourishing as it relates to our plants and gardens. A flourishing tree sports many new branches, many
new twigs, and many shiny new leaves. The bark of a flourishing tree has deeper and richer shades of brown. The greens of such a tree’s leaves are moister and wetter, reflecting the aqua tones of the rivers, streams and sky. All the flourishing trees semi-moving parts are joyously turned toward the sun.
A flourishing human being expresses many similar phenomena. When describing the characteristics of well-balanced individuals, psychologists and sociologists have historically used the term “happiness”. But “being happy” seems a fairly passive state of affairs. It's good to be happy, certainly, but what’s being referred to is more of an emotional, subjective state of being. You are happy in response to a circumstance or series of events. In contrast, when you’re flourishing, you're actively taking part. You are the initiator rather than the responder. You’re in the driver’s seat. You get to say how things are going to go.
How do you achieve a state of flourishing? As always, it’s the journey, not the destination, that provides the biggest payoff—in this case, a joyous, fulfilling life. Flourishing as such is not an endpoint—it’s a moving target. We need to be proactive to replenish, reinvigorate, and revive our continuing cycle of 24hour allotments. We want to live, rather than merely exist. Living requires imagination, invention, interest and action. Flourishing is an outcome of playing full out, of active participation in life.
Regular chiropractic care is a critical part of one’s journey of growth and development. Regular chiropractic care improves spinal alignment and removes sources of nerve irritation. Chiropractic adjustments improve brain function and benefit almost every aspect of human performance. An intimate
relationship exists between the spine, brain, and the autonomic nervous system which is the part of the body that controls our vital functions. It is also involved in the acute stress response and is important for regulating the body and mind. Our thoughts, feelings, emotions and overall body functions, necessary for living and thriving, are balanced to help us achieve a new level of happiness.
Chiropractic care helps to facilitate both our inner processes of self-discovery and our outer activities that contribute to the flourishing of ourselves, our family, our community, and our society.

From the Open Center to the New Center
Ralph White’s Vision for Holistic Education - Part 2 -
In January, Natural Awakenings caught up with Ralph White, founder of the New Center, who shared about his holistic hub in New York City, emphasizing its importance as a center for inner development, authentic spirituality, and ecological transformation. Here is part two of that conversation.
Will the NCNY focus more on in-person gatherings, online programs or a hybrid approach? The NCNY has plans for a global reach. How do you envision connecting with participants worldwide while staying grounded in the New York community?
Yes, we are offering events in all three formats—in person, online and hybrid. One of the spaces we are using in Chelsea is perfectly set up for hybrid programs. So, you can have an audience at the site and also a potentially larger audience online anywhere in the world. These are still early days for us, but the Open Center was able to expand its reach widely once the pandemic forced it to go online. So really a hybrid approach offers the best of both worlds —direct, human to human engagement, and a reach as far as time zones permit.
After decades in the field, what continues to drive your passion for holistic learning and spirituality?
We so clearly must move as a culture and a planet in the direction of sustainable living. The climate crisis, if nothing else, shows us dramatically how we cannot continue with endless profit-centered economic growth and obsessive consumerism. We have to shift to
more holistic and ecological values and practices to have any kind of viable future. Therefore, the need for holistic learning remains as vital as ever.
Can you share some of the key programs or initiatives the New Center offers, and what makes them unique?
Let’s start with the Esoteric Quest series of international conferences that are totally unique. These are concerned with rediscovering the lost spiritual and cultural history of the West. In our holistic world there is a major emphasis on the Eastern and Shamanic paths. We feel it’s important to balance this with in-depth experiences of half-forgotten worlds like those of the Renaissance alchemists in Bohemia. This year in September we will offer An Esoteric Quest for the Mountain of Truth in Ascona, Switzerland, as it was there that the counterculture was born between 1901 and 1920 with participants like Herman Hesse and Isadora Duncan. We will begin in Carl Jung’s retreat at Eranos on Lago Maggiore and end at the Goetheanum, the impressive center of Rudolf Steiner’s extraordinary legacy in Dornach.
You’ve worked with luminaries in holistic and spiritual traditions. Who or what has been the biggest influences on your work?
For me personally, though not for the New Center in general, Rudolf Steiner has probably been the greatest influence as a philosopher, reformer and spiritual friend. His holistic legacy is unparalleled. I also felt a deep connection with the poet and cultural activist Robert
Bly who did many events at the Open Center and at the Esoteric Quest conferences. There have been generations of teachers, performers and presenters who have touched me by the authenticity, wisdom and pioneering courage of their work
What would you like to say to those who supported you during this transition and to those discovering holistic learning for the first time?
Profound thanks to those who have supported us already. And welcome aboard to anyone new to the Center and to holistic learning. This is vital work as it speaks to the core need for a shift in worldview away from materialism and consumerism to respect for the wisdom of indigenous and other cultures, the rediscovery of the connection between body and mind, and the reawakening to a spiritually alive cosmos instead of the alienation and suffering that result from the constricted and short-sighted paradigm that still dominates our culture.

The Unified Heart
by Alison David Bird, C.Ht, Orignator of Marconics
We are dying to our old ways of being, and that is reflected in the murmurs of the heart as it flickers into life as the new processing center. The heart space and corresponding heart chakra carries the vibration of the color green and is the new brain.
It has not yet been possible to measure the distance of the electromagnetic field of the heart or the outer edges of its energetic signature as it pulses outward. This is evidence of unity, as it shows that we actually all share the same energetic field through the field of connectivity. The vibrations between our individual human-energy grids become very fine the further we are apart from each other, but we still share the same unified field. Think of it as living in a house filled with oxygen. We can pass from the living room into the totally different space of the bedroom, but we still breathe the same oxygen.
As we learn to bypass the linear mind, we exchange the con fines of human belief systems for more expansive feeling-based consciousness of our reality where we can read frequencies and discern them through that heart space, translating them into “knowing”. We are becoming clairsentient and claircognizant.
heart dances with the galactic heart in the thymus area, as the seven lower and the seven higher heavens reunite. For those who can see frequency, the waves of light appear as pink and gold.
We transcend the human ego-mind in exchange for balanced places of spiritual neutrality, enveloped in the frequencies of higher love emanating from “All That Is.” As unity consciousness/the superconscious collective mind pervades the lower aspects of self, we can grasp higher concepts as they unfurl in the heart space in “aha!” moments.
We do not need explanations or proof, because we have the unshakable inner knowing that something “just is” through discerning the vibration of truth. We begin to release (albeit painfully) all ego-centric beliefs, preoccupations and human desires. We move into the heart space as it becomes a stargate, a human portal, creating passage into the New World.

These are difficult and chaotic times.
Lightworkers traditionally have very blocked heart chakras as a result of lifetimes of persecution, vilification, abuse, pun ishment, torture and ultimately death at the hands of accusers. They have learned to hide their lights under bushels. Some have had to shield their hearts and bolt them over to protect themselves. This means that when it comes time to expand this energetic field, it can be painful—mentally, emotionally and physically.
The heart space is synching up with the galactic core and with our planets of origin in the Andromeda galaxy. This causes a range of symptoms in the heart space: arrhythmia • crushing sensation • palpitations • raised blood pressure • weight in the center of the chest • feeling that the heart has rolled over in place • missing beats (and waiting for it to kick-in again) • pressure from inside the chest pushing out ward • heart-attack type symptoms (indigestion, pains in the left arm, jaw line or teeth) • deep emotional cleansing • sense of spiking-fear programs being released
The energetic heart center is the place where we find equilibri um: balance in duality between the three lower chakras and three upper chakras, integrating male and female energies. It is the center of matter and antimatter merging with spirit. The human
The Thriving Heart
Integrative Approaches to Cardiology
by Carrie Jackson
Although only the size of a fist, our hearts pump blood to our organs and supply oxygen and nutrients to our cells, allowing every system to function optimally. Maintaining a healthy heart is one of the most important factors for overall wellness, and cardiovascular disease is highly preventable. Integrative cardiology, which focuses on treating the whole person rather than just the heart, reflects a shift toward more individualized, patient-centered care. Using personalized nutrition, expansive blood testing, advanced therapies and holistic practices, doctors and patients can blend the best of traditional and integrative strategies for a more balanced and effective approach to heart health.
The 100-Year Heart
Dr. Jack Wolfson is a board-certified cardiologist, bestselling author and founder of the site NaturalHeartDoctor.com. He pioneered the 100-year heart method, which focuses on what he calls “thrival” nutrition, lifestyle, biohacking and ultra-diagnostics to lead a life filled with vitality, clarity and longevity. “Our approach is root-cause medicine, which puts pharma last,” he explains. “By looking at daily habits and lifestyle choices, we are able to see why people develop cardiovascular disease, which is the number one killer worldwide.”
Wolfson notes that cardiovascular health begins by giving the heart the nutrition it
needs to thrive. “Food is medicine, and a paleo-based diet like our ancestors followed has been shown to optimize heart function,” he says. “I recommend patients focus on eating wild seafood and pasture-raised meats such as bison, including organs like the heart and liver. This is supplemented by foraging for things like eggs, raw dairy, nuts, seeds, avocados, coconuts and other fruits and vegetables.”
How we live has a dramatic effect on heart health, and Wolfson asserts that there are a number of lifestyle factors we can control. “A thrival lifestyle centers around being outside in natural sunlight and participating in activities we enjoy. When combined with a positive mindset and high-quality sleep, these practices increase longevity and contribute to a deeper sense of meaning and fulfillment,” he says. “It’s also essential to avoid environmental toxins, such as air pollution, plastic and indoor pollutants like mold from water damage, to the best of your ability. Finally, managing stress and getting movement throughout your day are key to optimal cardiovascular function.”
A truly holistic approach to wellness combines many interrelated tools. “Find an activity you love to do outside, whether that’s hiking, biking, stand-up paddleboarding or yoga. Before you begin, turn your attention inward and think of three things you are grateful for,” Wolfson advises. “This gratitude practice helps you find your happy place, and it gives you a sense of purpose in a world where that’s becoming increasingly difficult. It engages the autonomic nervous system, which controls functions like heart rate and blood pressure.”
Wolfson believes that for a healthy mind, body and heart, a chiropractor should be the gatekeeper to overall wellness. “Chiropractic care uses the manipulations of bones in a purposeful way to make impactful changes to the neurologic system. It sends out beneficial, efferent signals to all of the cells, tissues and organs, including the heart. It also helps to get us out of the ‘fight-flight-orfreeze’ mode that so many people are operating in,” he remarks. “Chronic stress from work, family, news and finances keeps the sympathetic nervous system activated, but chiropractic treatments help stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, which allows us to rest and digest.”
To kickstart heart health even further, Wolfson’s 100-year heart method uses thrival biohacking methods such as supplements and non-surgical recovery therapies. “Evidence-based, food-grade supplements from field-harvested animals and wild fish support heart function without chemicals or pharmaceuticals,” he points out. “People also may need additional minerals like magnesium, herbal remedies, probiotics or detox strategies if they’ve been living around pollutants. Non-invasive technologies like red light therapy, sauna use, massage, ozone therapy and other cutting-edge treatments help to hack our system and support a healthy heart.”

HOLISTIC DENTAL & WELLNESS CENTER
Dr. Jillian Finker, ND Naturopathic
Treating the Whole Person
Dr. Mimi Guarneri is a California-based cardiologist; the medical director of Pacific Pearl La Jolla; an award-winning researcher, consultant and philanthropist; and president of the Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine. In her practice, she combines conventional, integrative and natural medicine to holistically treat the whole patient.
Guarneri says that while cardiovascular disease is still largely misunderstood, it is also highly preventable. “People think it’s a disease of cholesterol, but it’s actually due to inflammation, oxidative stress and immune response,” she explains. “Inflammation can come from obesity, stress, sleep apnea, poor food choices and food sensitivities, and that is what causes damage to the lining of the blood vessels. In the conventional medicine realm, that means telling patients to stop smoking, lose weight and get blood pressure and cholesterol under control. From a holistic perspective, we look at all the lifestyle factors that contribute to heart health.”
When treating a patient with heart disease, Guarneri uses the metaphor of a tree with sick branches. “Instead of just cutting them off, you have to look at the soil to see what can be causing the illness. The soil of our lives includes micro- and macro-nutrition, a healthy microbiome, avoiding toxins, high-quality sleep, physical activity and mental, emotional and spiritual wellness. All these factors contribute to healthy heart function,” she says.
Guarneri uses advanced testing to assess a patient’s baseline heart health. “We begin with a blood and urine micronutrient analysis, which measures the level of antioxidants and nutrients in the body. Then we conduct a microbiome analysis, which is a three-day stool test that shows how someone is digesting their food. We can see every type of microbe, any parasites and if there is dysbiosis [imbalance] or bacteria overgrowth. Finally, we conduct an in-home study on sleep, which is an integral part of cardiovascular health. Someone with sleep apnea can snore and stop breathing, putting them at increased risk for heart disease, heart failure and high blood pressure,” she says.
Advanced cardiovascular testing shows additional valuable data. “An EndoPAT tells us if the lining of the blood vessels is making nitric oxide, the most important ingredient for heart health. This is a 40-minute, inoffice procedure that does not require radiation. Since cardiovascular disease is an inflammatory disease, we do advanced lipid testing to measure inflammatory markers. A high-sensitivity C-reactive protein test measures the level of C-reactive protein in your blood to assess your risk of heart disease and stroke. A 24-hour blood pressure cuff tells us what’s happening throughout the day, and a continuous glucose monitor shows how blood sugar reacts to foods. It’s also valuable feedback to the patient, who can see how their body responds to what they’re ingesting,” says Guarneri.
With all this data, the team creates a road map to health. “We make recommendations based on each patient’s individual needs, including supplements, food choices and lifestyle modifications,” she says. “I may suggest nutraceuticals to complete something that’s missing, such as vitamin D, or I may use them to treat a problem. We’ll prescribe omega-3 [fatty acids] if your triglycerides are high, but we’re also going to give you a low glycemic index diet.”
Guarneri works with patients to manage stress through mindfulness, meditation, exercise and other lifestyle choices. “If you are in constant ‘fight-or-flight’ mode, you are producing adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol, which cause blood pressure to go up, the coronary arteries to constrict, cholesterol to increase and oxidative stress to develop,” she explains.
Guarneri points to a study involving Black Americans with hypertension that showed a 48 percent reduction in cardiovascular events through the use of transcendental meditation. “Mindfulness has also been shown to improve telomeres, telomerase and other genes of aging. Making conscious decisions in our behavior in response to stress is key to overall wellness and cardiovascular function. If your habit is to go home and have a drink after a hard day, we encourage patients to put on their tennis shoes and take a walk instead,” she says.
The Future of Cardiology
New advancements in cardiology are made all the time. In the coming year, cardiologists and researchers are expected to dig deeper into lipid disorders, obesity management and RNA-based therapies for conditions like cardiac amyloidosis, heart failure, dilated cardiomyopathy and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. We can also expect to see an increase of awareness and interest in the role lipidology [the study of lipids or fatty acids] has on cardiovascular disease. “Preventive cardiologists and clinical lipidologists like myself have been checking Lp(a) levels for well over two decades now, but there has been little we could do medically to reduce high levels,” says Yasmine S. Ali, MD, MSCI, FACC, FACP, adding that a number of nucleic acid therapeutic trials suggest this may change soon.
Experts stress that despite technological treatment advancements, preventative care is still the most effective way to ensure cardiovascular health. “Everyday lifestyle choices have the biggest impact on overall wellness and living a life of vitality, clarity and longevity,” says Wolfson.

Benefits of Dark Chocolate and Cacao
by Marlaina Donato
Ancient Mayans prepared beans from the cacao tree, mixed with spices, to make a ceremonial drink that was both sacred and medicinal for them. Today, the market is filled with all sorts of chocolaty treats, but dark chocolate is the low-sugar, nutritional superhero that tickles the tastebuds, boosts the production of mood-enhancing endorphins and delivers flavanols, the antioxidant compounds linked to improved cardiovascular health.
“Chocolate affects us deeply when it comes to our emotions. This is why you get it when you are sad, when you are happy or when you want to show your love. Chocolate doesn’t just hit the heartstrings, it’s also scientific,” says Chris Davis, a private chef and third-generation cocoa devotee from Belmont, North Carolina, who is passionate about the ingredient’s sweet and savory potential.
The benefits of dark chocolate can be traced back to its high flavanol content. Researchers have discovered that this antioxidant
supports the production of nitric oxide, which is crucial for improving circulation, relaxing blood vessels and lowering blood pressure. Flavanols have also been shown to increase insulin sensitivity, which could reduce the risk of diabetes. Observational studies have shown that indulging in one or two small squares (approximately six grams) of high-quality chocolate daily reduces the risk of mortality from heart disease.
How Chocolate Is Made
Chocolate production involves a complex set of steps, beginning with a cacao pod that is larger than the palm of a hand. The seeds inside this pod are fermented, dried and roasted to create cocoa beans, which are comprised of nibs, cocoa butter and an outer shell. The nibs are ground and refined to produce cocoa solids, and the shell is ground into cocoa powder. The most beneficial dark chocolate contains 70 to 90 percent cocoa solids with minimal added sugar and no artificial ingredients such as alkali, a flavor enhancer that greatly diminishes flavanol content.
Narong KHUEANKAEW
Another nutritional powerhouse is cacao powder, which is made from raw cacao beans and nibs that are fermented and roasted at much lower temperatures than the beans used to make cocoa powder. Although it is more bitter, cacao powder retains more of the bean’s original nutritional value, including flavonoids and antioxidants.
Therapeutic Indulgence
“Rich in B vitamins, cacao is full of minerals such as calcium, copper, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, copper and zinc,” says Sara Ratza, from Tarpon Springs, Florida, a clinical herbalist, health practitioner and author of Drinking Chocolate: Ancient Traditions for Modern Healing. “Traditionally, cacao is given to help raise serotonin and level out dopamine, so the Indigenous people share cacao to help those dealing with addictions. Cacao contains hundreds of chemical compounds such as phenethylamine, which is associated with the production of endorphins in the brain.”
According to Ratza, theobromine, cacao’s main chemical constituent that many confuse for caffeine, has psychological effects that enhance mood. Cacao was an important part of her own emotional healing while she grieved the loss of both her brother and father. During the COVID pandemic, she owned and operated a brickand-mortar chocolate factory and shop. “The stories of people coming in and dealing with the trauma of the time is forever ingrained in my heart,” she recalls.
Ratza recommends using cacao in the form of nibs or powder from reputable sources. “If your chocolate has transparency of the origin and/or farm, generally you are buying a higher-quality product,” she explains. No matter how we revel in dark chocolate or cacao, it is important to opt for the “fair trade” certification that ensures the product was manufactured without child labor and at a fair wage for workers.
The Savory Side
For most of us, our love affair with chocolate is based on its sweet form, but a whole world of gourmet fare celebrates its versatility beyond the candy bar or smoothie. For Davis, “The magic truly happens when applied in a savory way. There is a whole other flavor profile to chocolate before sugar is added to it when you want to add an earthy depth to a dish or add smokiness to a protein. Almost any sauce I make with wild game, red meat or red wine I will add a bit of cacao to give it the flavor and color that no other ingredient will come close to.” One of his favorite Mexican recipes is mole, a rich and savory sauce made from chilis and chocolate.
Opening Our Hearts to Chocolate
Ratza believes that consuming chocolate takes us on a journey, if we allow a little time for it to transport and transform us. “Cacao almost forces you to slow down,” she says. “It is important to sit and close your eyes as you sip a cup of cacao or let a piece of chocolate melt on your tongue.”
