Welcome to May, the month devoted to mom. If yours is still with you, rejoice and celebrate. In my house, I’ve always told my boys, tongue in cheek, that every day is Mother's Day because every day I think about them, and I always make myself available when they are in need.

As our children enter adulthood, I still want to do, give, offer, aid, listen, make, drive, fix, etc.—you get my point. In fact, I recently delivered a suitcase for my son that he needed for a next-day trip. I hopped in the car and headed up the highway to his place, gave him a kiss and the suitcase, and then immediately got back in the car and returned home. Door-to-door, it’s a three-hour round-trip. And you know what? I'd do it again if I got the call.

The need to save them never dissipates just because they leave the nest. When they panic, we appear to smooth things over. When they call late at night, it's our turn to panic until we get the all-clear. Our minds wander with fear when they are out of our sight. As mothers, we live and breathe for our offspring; they are our lineage, and we garnered that coveted title the second they were born. But it would be impossible to find a guidebook with instructions on how to do the job because it's ever-changing and evolving. There are no two mothers raising children the same way. So, we do the best we can.

This is the first year Michael and I don't have our mothers with us since their passing. The last time I saw my mom was just after Mother's Day last year. Deep down, I had a feeling it would be our last together. Even with our upand-down relationship, I feel the void of not having her here on Earth. I wish I knew what she thinks of my job thus far. Am I the kind of mother she thought I would be?

There are times when I wish I could talk to her about parenting and the decisions I've made, both good and bad, and if she would have done the same. Ah, mothers. Some are complicated, some are easy, some are warm, and some are cold. And some are a mix of them all. Whatever yours is or was, find the most authentic moments of joy and hold them close to your heart, for we came from only one mother and can all find something to thank her for.

Connect to Your Self and Soul’s Purpose with Yoga and Breathwork

For years Natural Awakenings Sales Director Carol Leitner, MBA, certified Kripalu yoga instructor, has been using her yoga/stretch/strengthening and breathwork practice as a powerful physical, emotional and spiritual tool.

“I experienced my first yoga/stretch breathwork class on the Upper West Side and attended this class for 16 years,” she says. “This class provided me with enormous peace and clarity, along with a deep connection to my Self and my soul’s purpose.” By breathing deeply and stretching, Leitner shares that she was transported to a place of samadhi, or “consciousness without Self, bliss, or time-out-of time as defined by psychotherapist and author, Stephen Cope in his book Yoga and the Quest for True Self,” she explains. “According to Cope, when we drop out of the mind and into the body, we experience complete well-being.”

Leitner agrees and feels that this practice has brought her enormous clarity on her relationships, health, right livelihood, and her soul’s purpose. “I use this daily practice to gain clarity on what I am here to do, and how I can serve humanity in the highest way,” she affirms.

To share this gift with others, Leitner offers daily Gentle Yoga/Stretch/Breathwork classes, both on the mat and in the chair, to beginners and experienced yoga and breathwork practitioners. In addition, she has a following of over 5,000 holistic lifestyle enthusiasts in her Meetup groups. “If you’re interested in staying informed on local holistic events, please consider joining one of my two holistic meetup groups,” she adds.

Offering Hope and Healing from Post-COVID Syndromes

Dr. David Pollack and his team at Pollack Wellness in Commack, New York, have been inundated with people experiencing post-COVID syndromes—also known as long COVID. “For some, the symptoms are respiratory. However, for most, the issues revolve around autoimmune, digestive, neurological and skin conditions,” he shares, adding that he has also seen a fair share of strange, unexplained symptoms.

As more patients with long COVID came to the clinic, Pollack’s team began noticing symptom themes, based on when a patient’s COVID-19 infection occurred. “Many people who got long COVID from an infection in December 2021 to January 2022 had severe digestive issues, which often developed into an autoimmune disorder,” he explains. “Infections from earlier in 2021 often created heart-based symptoms and skin conditions. Certainly, this is not all-inclusive or comprehensive, but there seems to be some association with the time period and the preponderance of symptoms produced in long COVID cases.”

While Pollack can’t help but ponder the true origins of these conditions, he and his team stay focused on helping their patients overcome this myriad of health challenges.

“Fundamentally what has occurred from COVID-19 in long COVID cases is like that of rare reactions to other viruses and infections, just at a much more massive and unusual scale,” he explains. “Historically we have seen that after certain infections— and even extremely stressful events—some people develop serious medical conditions. It’s important to figure out what exactly has been injured in the body. These long COVID symptoms are not COVID. They are the left-over damage and reaction that has resulted.”

After assessing what has been damaged in the body, Pollack determines whether there is evidence of an autoimmune reaction. “If an immune response is involved, the symptoms often become more dramatic and complicated,” he says. “Lastly, and very commonly, is the reactivation of other latent viruses in the body.”

In Pollack’s clinic, they are seeing chronic persistent and novel reactivations of several infections including the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), Cytomegalovirus (CMV), Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV6), Lyme disease, and many others. “Much of the time these viruses were already present in the body. However, because of the COVID infection they became reactivated, often more severe than the original infection.”

One of the most important factors to successful treatment with long COVID, according to Pollack, is to help people overcome these infections while simultaneously making progress with healing any damage or autoimmune reactions.

“We often combine antiviral herbal treatments with acupuncture and detoxification therapies to overcome these infections. It’s taking longer for people to respond to these therapies, but they are responding. Pre-COVID, helping someone with EBV or a similar virus, on average, took four to six weeks to see significant responses versus post-COVID where it is taking three or more months to see those changes.”

Pollack affirms that combination approaches to help patients regain their health are making the biggest impact in his clinic. “Often, we combine enzyme therapy, herbal nutraceuticals, Chinese Medicine Therapies, bodywork, emotional release, detoxification, cold-laser therapies, and more,” he says. “Being persistent has shown great results.”

Two years ago, when Pollack and his team first started seeing these types of cases—the wild skin rashes, severe digestive issues, fertility problems, and more—he wasn’t sure if they would respond to treatment. “I’m relieved to say people are getting better and back to their lives. There was a lot to figure out. If you or someone you know is suffering from post-COVID syndromes, let them know there is hope and they can get better.”

Light Therapy for Autoimmune Symptoms

Fatigue is often reported as the most disabling symptom for people with autoimmune disorders, significantly impairing their physical, mental and social quality of life. Autoimmune researchers in Denmark, noting previous studies wherein bright light therapy significantly reduced fatigue related to traumatic brain injury and cancer, devised a study involving multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. The study was conducted as a randomized, sham-controlled trial of 26 people with MS that reported a Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) score greater than 36. Participants received either bright light therapy or a dim red light sham intervention for 30 minutes each morning for two weeks. The bright light therapy decreased FSS scores over the course of the study. However, this benefit occurred in the sham control group as well, highlighting the need for more research on the effects of light therapy on fatigue.

Seniors Avoid the Hospital With Nature

New research has found that exposure to natural environments may reduce the risk of hospitalization for older adults with Alzheimer’s disease, related dementias and Parkinson’s disease. The cohort study included approximately 62 million Medicare beneficiaries aged 65 years or older that lived in the contiguous United States from 2000 to 2016. Researchers looked at ZIP-Code-level greenness, percentages of park cover and blue space (water) cover, as well as hospitalizations. They found that exposure to greenness, park cover and blue space cover reduced hospitalizations for patients with Parkinson’s. Greenness—but not park or blue space cover—was associated with a lower risk of hospitalization due to Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

Benefits of Water Immersion During Birth

Water immersion during labor is an increasingly popular birthing option for healthy women that experience a straightforward pregnancy, labor spontaneously at full term and plan to give birth in a midwifery-led care setting. The process involves immersion in a birth pool to achieve relaxation and pain relief during the first and possibly part of the second stage of labor. The mother exits the pool for the actual birth, allowing the infant to emerge outside of the water. This method is different from a water birth, during which the woman remains in the pool as the infant emerges into the water and is then brought to the surface to initiate breathing.

In a new systematic review and meta-analysis published in BMJ Open, researchers compared the interventions and outcomes of water immersion, water birth and no-waterimmersion births. After reviewing 36 studies encompassing the experiences of about 150,000 women, researchers found that water immersion significantly reduced the use of epidurals, injected opioids, episiotomy, maternal pain and postpartum hemorrhage. There was also an increase in maternal satisfaction and improved odds of an intact perineum with water immersion. Water births were associated with increased odds of the tearing of the umbilical cord from the placenta, making delivery of the placenta difficult, although the absolute risk remained low (4.3 versus 1.3 per 1,000). There were no differences in any other identified neonatal outcomes.

Reversing Type 2 Diabetes With Diet

A Type 2 diabetes (T2D) diagnosis is often regarded as a lifelong sentence and typically treated as such, requiring an increasing number of drugs. However, sustained remission of T2D is now well established.

In a recent primary care-based cohort study published in BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health, advice on a lowercarbohydrate diet and weight loss protocols was offered routinely to 9,800 patients with T2D between 2013 and 2021. Overall, remission was achieved in 51 percent of the patients that adopted a low-carb lifestyle, with individuals diagnosed with T2D within the previous year more likely to achieve remission (77 percent) than those that had been diagnosed for longer (20 percent for patients with a T2D duration greater than 15 years). Additionally, about 97 percent of the patients experienced improvements in blood glycemic control. Average low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and systolic blood pressure decreased, and there were also significant financial savings on drugs.

A low-carb diet may give hope to those with T2D as a practical, manageable way to achieve remission, as well as substantial health and financial benefits. Even for those with poorly controlled T2D that may not achieve remission, improvements in diabetic control may be within reach.

Ashwagandha May Improve Women’s Sexual Experience

Poor sexual function affects about 40 percent of women and may worsen their quality of life. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a known adaptogenic herb that has been reported to improve sexual satisfaction, sleep and quality of life in women.

Researchers in Mumbai set out to evaluate the efficacy and safety of standardized ashwagandha root extract in improving sexual function in healthy females. A randomized, placebo-controlled study of 80 women between the ages of 18 and 50 with hypoactive sexual desire disorder and no other hormonal imbalances were given either 300 milligrams of ashwagandha root extract twice daily or a placebo for eight weeks. Sexual function, quality of life and safety were assessed. In comparison to the control group, the ashwagandha participants experienced statistically significant improvements in sexual desire, arousal and satisfaction; improved lubrication and orgasm; and less pain.

Exploring the Doomsday Glacier

Roughly measuring the size of Florida, the Thwaites Glacier is one of the most rapidly melting ice formations in Antarctica, having retreated more than eight miles since the 1990s. Scientists refer to it as the “doomsday glacier” due to concerns about its collapse, which could raise global sea levels by more than a meter, causing devastation along coastal cities and communities.

According to two papers published in the journal Nature, researchers are learning more about the driving forces behind the glacier’s rapid retreat, thanks in part to a robot deployed through a 600-meter-deep borehole in the glacier. Although melting has increased beneath the ice shelf, the current melt rate is slower than many computer models had estimated. A layer of fresh water between the bottom of the ice shelf and the ocean below slows the rate of melting along flat parts of the shelf.

Scientists discovered that the melting had produced a stepped topography across the bottom of the ice shelf, resembling a staircase, as well as cracks in the ice where rapid melting was taking place. “Our results are a surprise, but the glacier is still in trouble,” says Dr. Peter Davis, oceanographer at the British Antarctic Survey and lead author of one of the papers.

Gum recession is a common dental problem that occurs when the gums around the teeth pull away from the tooth. When the gums recede, so does the all-important jawbone that supports the tooth. ing or flossing, genetics, hormonal changes, and even tobacco use. “Gum recession can also be caused by improper dental procedures, such as aggressive orthodontic treatment, poorly fitting dental crowns or bridges, or improperly placed fillings,” affirms this passionate dental specialist, who prioritizes being on the cutting edge of the newest dental advancements. “Some of the signs and symptoms of gum recession include bleeding gums, exposed roots, visible notches or grooves in the teeth near the gum line, and loose teeth.”

Treatment for gum recession depends on the severity of the condition. In mild cases, Dr. Etess may recommend a change in oral hygiene habits, such as only using a soft-bristled toothbrush or switching to a gentler non-abrasive toothpaste. In more severe cases, a traditional gum grafting procedure may be needed to restore the lost gum tissue.

Even better, Dr. Etess has specialty training in the gum lifting procedure known as the Chao Pinhole gum lift rejuvenation procedure. This minimally invasive procedure involves creating a small pinhole in the gum tissue and then using delicate instruments to gently release and reposition the gum tissue over the exposed

tooth roots. “The procedure is performed without the use of incisions or sutures, resulting in a quick recovery time compared to traditional gum grafting procedures,” he explains. “It can be performed on multiple teeth during a single session, making it an efficient and effective gum rejuvenation treatment option.”

Regular dental checkups are essential for preventing and treating gum recession. Dr. Etess and his hygiene team can monitor your oral health and identify any signs of gum disease or other dental problems early on, so they can be treated promptly.

Earth-Friendly Delights for Mom

This year, consider putting an ecological spin on Mother’s Day by showering her with gifts that honor Mother Earth. Here are some sustainable gifting ideas.

Flower Power

Lavish her with an eco-friendly bouquet. Conventional blooms that are flown in from South America can be riddled with fungicides, carcinogen-laden floral foams, sheens and other hazardous chemicals, not to mention the huge carbon footprint required to bring them here. Locally grown, organic flowers at farmers markets, sustainable florists and small-business greenhouses are produced with fewer or no chemicals, support pollinators and require no jet fuel to get to mom’s doorstep.

Choice Chocolates

Satisfy mama’s sweet tooth with organic, fair-trade chocolate that helps cocoa farmers earn a living wage and does not promote deforestation. Opting to buy ethical chocolate prevents child and slave labor and provides women equal pay as well as opportunities to own a business. Look for certified, fair-trade labels as well as nonGMO and organic certifications.

Bling Blessings

Adorn her with ethically sourced and sustainable jewelry created from recycled precious metals, Fairmined Ecological gold and conflict-free gemstones. Beautiful, one-of-a-kind creations can be found at local artisan fairs or online from eco-conscious jewelers. Look for sellers with sustainable jewelry certifications and those that use recycled, upcycled or reclaimed materials.

Climate Café

Fill her cup with bird-friendly, shade-grown, fair-trade coffees and teas that offer a healthier caffeine fix while protecting bird populations and canopy cover. Choosing products labeled Rainforest Alliance Certified or Bird Friendly helps to ensure the habitat for 40 species of migratory songbirds that winter in plantations.

Local Luxuries

There are so many ways to support the local economy while treating mom to an unforgettable experience that makes her feel extra-special. Give her a gift certificate for a massage, aromatherapy session or makeover at an organic salon. Treat her to a fabulous dinner at a vegan restaurant. Subscribe her to receive a monthly produce box from a communitysupported agriculture outlet. Pack a healthy picnic and spend the afternoon together at the park. Create a gift basket of goods made by local artisans, including beeswax candles, pottery or body treats like handmade soaps and lotions.

LYME DISEASE The Great Mimicker

From the desk of Dr. Howard Robins at The Healing Center in New York City…

What’s Wrong with Me?

Michael came into the office taking short baby steps. His 19-year-old arms and hands were bent and twisted into a weird, spasmodic position. His head tilted to the side, eyes nearly closed, with his face in a strange grimace. He spoke in short, three- or four-word sentences. He had been suffering since he was 13 years old, and his father was ready to institutionalize him for the rest of his life. Until he became ill, he was a normal boy and a computer whiz. One day, he developed what appeared to be the flu, except it was in the summer and not the flu season.

Several courses of oral and intravenous antibiotics failed to work. His symptoms worsened over the years, and several Lyme experts later left him in the state in which he arrived at our office. He had late-stage Lyme disease.

The Cause

The disease is named after the towns of Lyme and Old Lyme, Connecticut, where a large number of cases were identified in 1975. It is a worldwide pandemic. The infection is transmitted to humans by the bite of infected ticks. The ticks are extremely small and often fall off the body after feeding, thus masking the fact that you’ve been bitten.

The Symptoms and the Difficulty in Diagnosis

the ankles, elbows, wrists, hips and shoulders. Pain is often mild or moderate, usually with swelling at the involved joint. In some cases, Lyme disease kills.

The Answer

In many but not all cases, antibiotics may eliminate the infection and its symptoms, especially if the illness is treated early. Unfortunately, even when Lyme disease is caught early, antibiotics don’t always work. Many people are allergic to the drugs needed or develop sensitivity reactions and have to stop the drugs. Delayed or inadequate treatment (often treating for too short a period of time) can lead to the more serious symptoms, which can be disabling and even harder to treat—that is, unless medical ozone is used.

Dr. Howard Robins

Early symptoms may include fever, headache, fatigue, depression and a characteristic circular skin rash, which has a “bulls-eye” (target-like) appearance. The bulls-eye rash is thought to occur in only about 80 percent of infected patients, adding to misdiagnosis. Patients often experience flu-like symptoms, such as headache, muscle soreness, fever and malaise, which can also confuse early diagnosis.

Lyme arthritis usually affects the knees and feet, and in some patients, arthritis can occur in other joints, including

Over the past 22 years, intravenous medical ozone has been safely and effectively used to destroy and eliminate Lyme disease, even in late-stage infections. Often when all hope is gone, even after years of suffering, medical ozone has proven successful. Usually in just a few weeks, symptoms begin to diminish, offering hope and finally giving relief. When it enters the body, intravenous medical ozone attacks and kills all Lyme disease-causing bacteria. It does it safely, with virtually no adverse reactions. In addition, it destroys all unwanted viruses, fungus, yeast, mold, harmful free radicles and toxins, thus cleansing the body and boosting its natural immune system. And did I say it does it safely and with virtually no adverse reactions?

Motion within Stillness

In the past few issues of Natural Awakenings we’ve been exploring how to move more freely and naturally. Every tool that I’ve shared is designed to keep you fluid, flowing and elastic. We call this being in a state of physiological “poise.” Physiological poise is our body’s timing and coordination. It is our birthright. Think for a moment about what happens when you’re nervous. We often feel “frozen.” Olympic figure skaters know this phenomenon well. Their jitters can overwhelm them, and their legs become heavy and wooden. They call it “losing their legs.” But when they feel at ease, it’s as if they’re floating, and the ice is moving them. This month we’ll explore the physical manifestations of stress and how to become present with what is going

on in your body. When my students talk about stress and how it affects them, they describe it very perceptively. A guitarist I work with has disabling tendonitis in his shoulders. When I ask him what happens when he starts to play in pain, he says, “I lose my body.” Other words and expressions people use to describe how stress affects them include going down, compressing, tightening, pulling in, grabbing, constricting, collapsing, straining/pushing, fear, shallow and rapid breathing, anxiety and rigidity. Do any of those words or phrases resonate with you?

The Inspiration Of Breath

Reestablish

Includes almost two hours of video presentation and exercises, written explanation with graphics, and a half hour Skype or video lesson with Jean.

One of my students suffers from extreme anxiety, and her body is very collapsed. Recently, she realized that her parents constantly lived in “survivor” mode. Thus, she had internalized their fear and was always operating in fight or flight. As she expressed herself, her hands motioned in a downward direction, indicating that she was dragged down by stress rather than moving it up and out of her body.

Our hand gestures often indicate our unconscious understanding of what is going on in us. When students in my voice class speak about their fear of expression or the tightness in their throats, they always gesture down, but when they describe how they would love to be freer in their self-expression, their hands intuitively flow up. Frederick Matthias Alexander, founder of the Alexander Technique, said that if we can stop the wrong thing from happening, the right thing will emerge. Similarly, Carl Jung said that the body-mind has a great drive toward wholeness if we permit it to evolve without stopping it with our habits.

As you contemplate the many ways stress manifests in your body, realize what a powerful tool recognition is. We do not need to be victimized by our stress; we just need to become present with it. That is what helps it to shift. Review some of the tools for stimulating “up” in our bodies from previous issues, and the next time you feel “stressed out,” take a walk and let the earth rise underneath your feet and “move you.” You will glide along in the flow.

Healing Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes used to be a health condition reserved for older people. However, these days more and more children and teenagers are being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. While restlessness, fear and stress can all contribute to diabetes, the most important lifestyle factor is diet.

Not all types of sugar require insulin. For instance, fructose does not need insulin. Industrially prepared foods often contain fructose as a flavor enhancer. Since fructose doesn’t require insulin to be utilized, unfortunately it won’t create a feeling of satiety. Which means, the consumption of industrial and fast-food is one of the most important factors in becoming overweight and developing diabetes.

It is essential for anyone with diabetes to change their diet for permanent weight loss and to heal diabetes. Uncooked, living plant foods nourish the body organically, require almost no insulin, and don’t overload the metabolism the way that sugar,

white flour, animal protein, fat and alcohol do. These are all substances that the body can’t handle in high quantities. Fresh fruit can raise glucose levels a little, so it must be consumed carefully. However, raw vegetables don’t affect glucose levels and can be enjoyed liberally.

A properly prepared raw foods diet, accompanied by daily movement and order in life, is the essential therapy for diabetes. In fact, type 2 diabetes can be permanently cured with this diet and without antidiabetics or injections of insulin. This lifestyle prescription is the only possible way to prevent the dangerous secondary diseases of diabetes.

This path to your healing is described in our Bircher-Benner Manual for Diabetics, which is ready for practical use.

Dr. Andres Bircher is the director of the Bircher-Benner Centre for Scientific Natural Medicine, in Braunwald, Switzerland.

SOLVING STRESS

HOLISTIC TIPS FROM LIFESTYLE DOCTORS

Medicine is changing as a new class of doctors endeavors to treat the whole person rather than the symptoms of disease, helping their patients achieve optimal health with lifestyle changes, medicine, herbs, supplements and modalities tailored to the individual. No longer reaching for a prescription pad as often, these functional and integrative physicians are spending an average of 45 minutes per office visit. Using their sleuthing skills and innovative skillsets, they ask probing questions about a patient’s current lifestyle and history, pinpoint the root cause of a problem and craft customized solutions.

To help someone manage stress, a functional or integrative doctor may suggest a daily dose of herbal tea, nightly entries in a gratitude journal, a visualization practice, brisk walks, gardening, art therapy, mindful meditation, a nutrient-rich diet that reduces food allergies, yoga poses and regular sessions of qigong or tai chi. Armed with an extensive list of better-for-you choices than addictive, prescription sleeping pills or tranquilizers, individuals are empowered to improve their health and eliminate stress. Studies suggest that 75 to 90 percent of illnesses are stress related. Getting to the root cause before it escalates into cardiovascular disease, de-

pression or diabetes is what curious and compassionate doctors do. “Because sleep is a great resolution to almost anything, it’s one of the first things I consider,” says Carrie Jones, a functional and naturopathic doctor in Portland, Oregon. “Stress can be physiological, caused by parasites, viruses, bacteria and toxins, as well as blood sugar imbalances. Not getting enough sleep, or poor sleep, is stressful to the body, which is on alert all the time.”

According to Jones, finding ways to coax the body into feeling safe can help people relieve stress and get a good night’s sleep. “People rarely realize that basic things such as joy, play, laughter and a community of supportive people have anything to do with feeling safe enough to sleep deeply. It’s why I inquire about those things,” she explains.

Tips for Sounder Slumber

n Turn the thermostat down in the bedroom. A cool temperature combats insomnia.

n Snuggle under a weighted blanket. The gentle pressure signals the autonomic nervous system to go into rest mode.

Prostock-studioAdobeStock.com

n Install blackout shades. Light decreases melatonin, the sleep hormone.

n Avoid alcohol before bed, as it can disrupt the sleep cycle.

n Stop using electronics, including social media, television and phones, two hours before getting under the covers. The blue light emitted by screens restrains the production of melatonin.

Connecting and spending quality social time with friends helps to alleviate stress. Anna Cabeca, a triple board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist, advises, “Every day, stress causes the stress hormone cortisol to go up and oxytocin, the connecting hormone, to go down, lessening the desire to connect. It’s a double whammy for women in perimenopause and menopause, because hormones are declining, and stress overloads the already overtaxed endocrine system.”

Rebecca Hunton, personalized medicine doctor and founder of Radiantly Healthy MD, in Melbourne, Florida, coaches her patients to modify unhelpful habits. “I’m always looking for that one thing that patients can easily change. Sometimes it’s teaching them the difference between stress resilience and stress avoidance. A stress avoidance activity is spending two hours playing a game on your phone that leaves you beating yourself up and feeling like, ‘Why did I waste all that time?’ If, on the other hand, an activity leaves you feeling energized and wanting to tackle the other things on your to-do list, you just did a stress resilience activity,” says Hunton.

Stress Resilience Activities

n Meditation

n Prayer

n Chanting a mantra

n Expressing creativity, such as cooking or painting

Carol Penn is a dual board-certified physician and movement coach in New Jersey. While observing her 87-year-old father

practicing qigong, a form of meditation in motion, she had an epiphany and saw a powerful life lesson occurring before her eyes. “Moving with strength and grace through his practice so close to the end of his life, it occurred to me that he was rolemodeling what it would be like for me to be kind to my future self. I teach my patients from this perspective, visualizing their future selves full of health, vitality, wonder and awe,” says the author of Meditation in a Time of Madness.

Qigong has psychological and physical components, regulating the mind, body movement, breath and posture. “It balances and calms the autonomic, sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems so that you feel less stress upon completion of the practice. Movements are designed to build longevity on a cellular level,” Penn explains.

According to Lorraine Maita, a board-certified functional and integrative doctor in New Jersey, “The body sends out hormonal fight-or-flight signals when it’s distressed. In the initial stages, there’s a release of adrenaline, followed by cortisol, keeping your body on high alert. To most people, stress is just worry, and they’re thinking they’re handling it, but stress can be like a viral program running in the background all the time. It’s still there whether you’re reacting to it or not, whether you’re stuffing it under the surface or not. It’s why you go to therapy with mental stress, or why you need someone to talk to for processing it.”

Maita is a proponent of alternative modalities that help people modulate the stress response. “I recommend HeartMath to my patients, which is self-regulation technology based on more than 32 years of scientific research on the psychophysiology of stress, resilience and the interactions between the heart and brain,” says the author of Vibrance for Life: How to Live Younger and Healthier.

Jaquel Patterson, a naturopathic physician and medical director of Fairfield Family Health, in Connecticut, might determine if her patient is suffering from chronic stress by testing their saliva for cortisol levels in the morning and evening. Noting that her

favorite teas for sleep and relaxation are chamomile and passionflower, she explains that passionflower is for someone that can’t fall asleep because there’s a radio playing in their head. “For dealing with stress, I like adaptogens, such as Siberian ginseng, rhodiola rosea, ashwagandha, holy basil and L-theanine. The stress response requires a lot of B vitamins, along with magnesium and vitamin C,” she says.

Citing Hal Elrod’s book The Miracle Morning, Patterson recommends starting every day with a set of stress-relieving rituals Elrod calls “Life S.A.V.E.R.S.” She explains, “S is for silence, like meditation. A is for affirmations. V is for visualization, so you can visualize how your day is going to be. E is for exercise. R is for reading, and S is for scribing, writing things in a journal.”

Pointing out the differences between stress and anxiety, Patterson notes that anxiety is a continual rumination of thoughts, second-guessing and overthinking. Anxiety can cause stress, but stress can occur without anxiety. People with high anxiety sometimes have heart palpitations. Some stress is good for us. Without any stressors, Patterson cautions, we are unmotivated, lethargic and lacking in enthusiasm.

wise words
26 New York City – Long Island NaturalAwakeningsNY.com

Why did you write your book?

Because I was heartbroken after speaking to an 8-year-old in Parkland, Florida. I asked him, “Are you looking forward to going back to school?” not realizing his older sibling was one of the teenagers murdered in the Stoneman Douglas school shooting. He responded, “I feel like something bad could happen, and no one will be able to help me—not my parents, not my teachers, not even the president.”

An 8-year-old shouldn’t be afraid to go to school, and if that’s what our society is becoming, then children need resiliency skills, a way to self-soothe, and so do their parents. The book is a response to gun violence, but it also applies to the pandemic and other unprecedented events that cause that kind of internal chaos and disorientation that leads to mood disorders, depression, anxiety and suicidality. Whether it’s meditation, yoga, journaling or something else, mind-body skills can get you back to your center so you can function at a higher level from a place of calm and relaxed awareness, versus out of fear and nervousness.

Why do you define meditation as relaxed awareness?

Many people think that you have to sit in a certain posture and have no thoughts to meditate, but that isn’t true. We have 60,000 thoughts a day, and we don’t pay attention to most of them. Meditation allows you to slow your thoughts so they’re not as overwhelming and don’t interfere as much. When thoughts slow down and there’s space between them, your body also begins to slow down. Neurotransmitters like dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin and endorphins are released in the brain, and you feel their downstream effect, which we call relaxation

What is soft belly breathing?

Many times, you get into this rigid kind of breath where you’re holding your belly in and your shoulders are thrown back. People think they look better if they have a flat, tight belly, and that’s how they’re moving in the world, but they’re not getting the full experience of the breath. Soft

belly breathing relaxes the torso, particularly that area just below your navel. This type of breathing allows the diaphragm to push down and massage everything beneath it, improving digestion and elimination processes and allowing the lungs to fill out from their bases where you pick up all the oxygen and nutrients that need to be carried throughout the body. As you inhale, say the word “soft” to remind yourself to soften and let go of any muscle tension. As you exhale, say “belly” to be reminded not to hold that part of the body in a rigid way.

Why do you say that movement is medicine?

Motion is synonymous with life. There’s always something moving, even when we’re asleep. Even gentle movement helps the body release endorphins, which elevate our mood, reduce pain and bring us pleasure. We want to bring that flow and fluidity into our lives so that we can tap into it on purpose. Have you ever noticed the less you move, the harder it is to move? Movement needs to be encouraged throughout the lifespan.

What movements do you recommend?

One starts in a standing position. Notice how the rib cage moves as you soft belly breathe. Soften the knees, drop the chin to the chest and as you inhale, lift the arms and feel yourself float away slightly from the body to create a gentle undula-

tion of the spine. This stimulates the “mu” receptors that cause our brain to release pain-reducing endorphins.

Another is to shake it off, like when a dog is walking along and all of a sudden their back twitches, they shake and then continue along their merry way. If we’re bothering them, dogs will literally shake it off. They don’t let it anchor in the body, in their muscles and in their nervous system the way that humans do. Some people wake up tired. Their jaw hurts because they were clenching their teeth all night. By shaking off that tension for one to three minutes, you loosen the tight ligaments where we habitually hold tension.

What is “taking your seat on your throne,” and how can it help us?

I came up with that when teaching women how to meditate from a seated position. Women wear so many hats that life can feel weary, so asking them to sit down as if they’re taking a seat upon the throne of their own well-being gives them a way of sitting that’s different than just plopping down and collapsing because they’re exhausted. It shifts the energy and mental picture. You are more than the exhausted mother, executive, wife or caretaker. There’s a regal elegance, calm and quiet strength inside, and we’re going to meet her in our time of meditation.

The Healthier Caregiving Journey

Caregiving is truly a marathon. You can’t predict how long the journey will be, so it’s essential for your own health and sanity to pace yourself and give yourself huge doses of self-compassion. No one can do this role perfectly. I can’t imagine another role that requires so much; and yet, people are so hard on themselves. In my book Wake Up Call for Caregivers: Tools to Protect Your Health, I encourage caregivers to take their health seriously.

PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR HEALTH. Make yourself a top priority. If you or someone you know is a caregiver, it’s essential to take care of your health in the same way you do your loved one.  It’s imperative to consider what will happen to your loved one if something happens to you. Hopefully this motivates you to look at your

lifestyle and make necessary changes. This requires creativity and trial and error. You are also dealing with waves of emotions that are asking for your attention, along with the enormous responsibilities you carry. Listen to the messages your body is sending you.

YOU NEED SUPPORT. We need to normalize caregiving as a team effort in our society. It’s very easy to feel isolated and alone. If you are part of a faith community or other group, don’t hesitate to reach out and ask for support. People want to rise to the occasion and help during moments of crisis. You must be proactive and ask for something specific since others may not know how to help you.

GIVE YOURSELF GRACE. There is so much unknown when thinking about planning for the future with limited information. You will make mistakes and not know what you are doing. Know that you can always change course at any time, since things may change rapidly. Examine your regrets and consider if you have control in these areas.

TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS. You know your loved one best, so try to think about what they would want. There are so many voices telling you what you should do, so you have to go deep inside and listen to that quiet voice of wisdom. This requires that you slow down and remain calm.

START MAKING A HEALTHY CAREGIVING PLAN AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE. You won’t regret this often forgotten but essential step. This includes healthy eating, rest and relaxation. The best way to avoid burnout is to address it early on. It’s much harder to recover from burnout when you don’t have any resources left. Include what you need to not only survive but thrive. It might be something simple such as stepping outside every day to breathe fresh air, but you need to intentionally make time for it, or it will get lost in the endless urgent tasks in front of you. Asking yourself what keeps you going on difficult days is so important. This can be anything from a sense of gratitude to setting an example for your children. If you want to finish well, you absolutely need to take great care of yourself.

Joanne Lee is an Integrative School of Nutrition Health Coach and family giver, blogger and the author of Wake Up Call for Caregivers: Tools to Improve Your Health. She understands how hard it is to balance caregiving demands while living the rest of your life.  She helps caregivers prioritize their health while caring for their loved ones. From Burnout to Bliss REDEFINING THE WORKPLACE

Emma sat at her desk, staring at the screen. Her heart raced, and her palms sweated. She knew she needed a break, but deadlines loomed. She loved her job, but it was taking a toll on her. While knowing it was unsustainable, Emma hesitated to share with management but ultimately went ahead. The conversation was tough but fruitful.

Emma regained her spark as her heart soared with gratitude from the positive changes. However, some situations do not work out this well.

In an article titled “Stressed, Sad and Anxious: A Snapshot of the Global Workforce” that appears on the Harvard Business Review website, article author Ryan Pendell writes, “Gallup research from March 2022 found that fewer than one in four U.S. employees felt strongly that their employer cared about their well-being—the lowest percentage in nearly a decade.”

A holistic workplace prioritizes the employees’ welfare beyond the physical and includes mind, soul, social, career and community well-being.

Here are some initiatives that workplace leaders can consider:

• Foster a sense of community through team-building activities, social events, and volunteer opportunities to create a sense of purpose.

• Create a culture that values and respects people, encouraging open communication and transparency for sharing.

• Offer wellness programs, gym memberships, and mental health resources.

• Provide flexibility in work schedules and remote options where possible.

• Encourage employees to take breaks and use their vacation time.

• Offer training, mentorship programs, and career advancement opportunities to support growth and development.

Employees are to be active participants and share honest feedback. Holistically healthy employees are crucial for organizational success. Leaders must prioritize employee well-being as both a risk and an opportunity.

Taking Control of Our Hormones

NUTRITIONAL TIPS TO SUPPORT THE DELICATE BALANCE

Think of hormones as the body’s messengers, sending signals that affect a host of functions. Produced by the pancreas, thyroid and other endocrine glands and organs, hormones drive our metabolism, impact mood, regulate blood pressure, manage our sleep cycles, influence sexual function and more. Key players are insulin, cortisol, thyroid and growth hormones, adrenaline, estrogen, progesterone and testosterone.

eeping these hormones in proper balance is critical for health, and imbalances can lead to a wide range of effects, including diabetes, thyroid disease, unintended weight fluctuations, skin problems, fatigue, mood swings and infertility. While inactivity, stress, age and genetics impact hormone production, our food choices can significantly tip the scales.

Dr. Ann Lee is a naturopathic doctor and licensed acupuncturist based in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. When treating hormonal, thyroid and adrenal imbalances, she says it is important to focus on foods that provide the minerals and vitamins that support those systems. For women of all ages, she recommends blueberries, asparagus, lettuce, celery and papaya. Teens and women in their 20s can also benefit from apples, bananas, mangoes, avocados, cauliflower, broccoli, cucumbers, sweet potatoes and most lettuce varieties. The nutrients in these vegetables and fruits become even more important as women reach 30 and for those dealing with menopause, so Lee recommends more frequent consumption of these fresh, whole foods to support the adrenal and thyroid glands.

According to Lee, it is equally important to avoid foods that interfere with hormonal nutrition. She advises women over 50 to lower their caffeine intake. Dairy products contain naturally occurring hormones that can impede human hormone balance and should be eaten in moderation. “ The

less external hormonal exposure you have, the easier it is for your own hormones to balance,” Lee explains.

Despite the popularity of intermittent fasting, Lee believes that the trendy eating pattern can deny the body the vitamins and minerals it needs, causing it to produce more adrenalin and cortisol to make up for the loss. “People do intermittent fasting because it might feel good to have more adrenalin, and thus more energy, but it does come at a price—your hormones,” she says.

Most of the foods Lee recommends are low in calories. “In order to curb hunger, you have to eat them regularly, and that goes against intermittent fasting. People that do intermittent fasting often focus on proteins and fats, so they don’t have to eat for a long time, but that can cause adrenal burnout because the body is not getting what it needs,” she explains, noting that avocados and potatoes tend to help people feel full longer.

Jaclyn Downs is a functional nutrigenomics practitioner in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and author of Enhancing Fertility Through Functional Medicine: Us-

ing Nutrigenomics to Solve ‘Unexplained’ Infertility. She notes that for hormones to be produced by the body, nutritional cofactors or “helper nutrients” are required.

“Magnesium, zinc and B vitamins are a few of the spark plugs that move these processes and keep the wheels spinning,” she emphasizes. “Grass-fed beef liver or capsules contain all of these.”

According to Downs, menstrual problems can be an indicator of eventual fertility issues. To support female reproductive hormones, she recommends cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, broccoli sprouts, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts. These foods also support liver detoxification pathways due to their high concentrations of vitamins and sulfur. “ The liver helps clear used or ‘dirty’ hormones,” she notes. Downs also recommends pomegranates, which are rich in antioxidants and fight inflammation-producing free radicals. Healthy fats from cold-water, wild-caught fish support pregnant women and growing fetuses. “Folate is often emphasized as a nutrient for pregnant women, but choline is just as important for everybody, regardless of life stage or gender,” Downs notes. Choline is found in egg yolks, sunflower lecithin and shiitake mushrooms. For 50-plus women, Downs prescribes fish or high-quality fish oil, which can benefit brain, liver and hormonal health.

Gardening Therapy

HEALING MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT IN THE YARD

Gardening outdoors adds color and texture to yards and neighborhoods and, with the right plants, attracts pollinators, whose numbers are declining. It also can improve human health. The exercise, sunshine and fresh air promote mental and physical health, and so does our contact with soil microbes and the harmonious patterns of nature.

“Being in the sunlight is a great way to get vitamin D, which is linked to mood and well-being. We spend so much time inside, where our perspective and thoughts can close around us. Getting outdoors can improve mindfulness and the sense of being in the moment, especially when we leave our phones inside,” says Pennsylvania-based psychologist Seth J. Gillihan, author of Mindful Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: A Simple Path to Healing, Hope and Peace.

In a study of the health and well-being benefits of allotment

gardening published in the Journal of Public Health, researchers measured the mood, self-esteem and general health markers of people given plots for gardening versus those that didn’t garden at all. The scientists found that the gardeners displayed significantly better self-esteem and experienced less depression and fatigue. The top three reasons participants gave for enjoying their time tinkering in the soil were: being outdoors and having contact with nature (70 percent); feeling a sense of achievement (50 percent); and having the opportunity for restoration and stress relief (35 percent).

Cultivating our outdoor space also gives us a healthy perspective, helping us to accept our limitations and better understand our place in nature. “It’s easy to see in the garden how many things are outside of our control, such as rain, temperature and pests. We can do our best, but at some point, we need to let go,” Gillihan notes, adding that learning to let go is a lesson we can apply to other aspects of our lives.

When he faced a long-term illness coupled with depression, Gillihan built raised garden beds and planted herbs and vegetables. “I knew I needed to get more involved in something that would bring me a sense of reward and engagement. All of that creative effort really helped to bring me back to life,” he recalls. “In a garden, you’re exercising, but it’s not a repetitive thing like running, so that can make it more fun and seem like less of a task.”

“Digging, walking, carrying and squatting circulate our blood and release dopamine and endorphins in our brains,” says Karen Hugg, author of Leaf Your Troubles Behind: How to Destress and Grow Happiness Through Plants. “We feel more energetic and happier. Similarly, puttering in the garden or designing an ornamental bed is really about playing, and playing is integral to mental health.”

By merely observing greenery we can find peace and clarity. “A tree’s subdividing branches or the whorled arrangement of leaves are patterns that can calm the nervous system. If you look at plants during even a five-minute break, either indoors or out, you’re practicing a kind of relaxation therapy,” Hugg affirms.

A little bit of earth under our fingernails is good for us. “When you get your hands dirty, there are beneficial microbes in the soil that improve your health and well-being,” says Charlie Hall, professor of horticultural studies and department chair at Texas A&M University, who has researched the physiological, psychological and social benefits of plants. According to Hall, horticultural therapy reduces stress and anxiety, enhances memory and attention span and can improve quality of life for those with physical, mental or cognitive challenges. Citing the example of disabled adults helping to run a garden center and greenhouse at the Brookwood Community in Brookshire, Texas, he notes, “Working together in a garden builds a sense of belonging. Even those who are not physically able to participate in those activities benefit. Just being in the garden can dramatically reduce the levels of the stress hormone cortisol.”

Gardening Tips to Improve Human and Planetary Health

n Choose a modest space outdoors or purchase small containers.

n Keep it simple and start small with just a few plants.

n Read books to learn about plant needs by region.

First Signs of Menopause

HOW TO RESOLVE VAGINAL DRYNESS

When The New York Times and National Geographic cover the subject of menopause in the same calendar year, perhaps it’s a sign that the inevitable phase of a woman ’s life that ushers in vaginal dryness, irregular periods, hot flashes, brain fog, mood swings, night sweats, sleep problems, decreased sex drive and weight gain is finally getting the attention it deserves.

Solutions for women experiencing perimenopause, menopause and post-menopause are not covered in medical school. Instead, they stem from the work of pioneers like Dr. Pamela Wartian Smith, author of What You Must Know About Women’s Hormones: Your Guide to Natural Hormone Treatments for PMS, Menopause, Osteoporosis, PCOS, and More, and Dr. Christiane Northrup, who wrote Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom: Creating Physical and Emotional Health and Healing.

Today, integrative and functional doctors, researchers and continuing education instructors are leading the charge to provide innovative and customized answers for women experiencing vaginal dryness and other hormone-related symptoms.

The earliest sign of changes occurs between the ages of 40 to 44, during perimenopause, and according to Dr. Lindsey Berkson, author of Safe Hormones, Smart Women, vaginal dryness is the flashing red light. “A sign of insufficient hormone signaling, vaginal dryness is the body’s warning that bones are beginning to thin; the brain’s structure, activity and neuron connectivity are beginning to decline; and the aging process has begun,” she explains.

A continuing-education instructor for doctors and pharmacists, Berkson notes, “The vagina doesn’t exist alone. Treating only the vagina is minimized medicine. It’s so important to find a doctor who practices functional medicine, has completed continuing-education

hours in hormone replacement therapy and nutrition, and has experience in these areas.”

Dr. Meena Malhotra, a double board-certified internist practicing functional and integrative medicine for 27 years, understands that vaginal tissue is hormone-dependent, and dryness left untreated can lead to urinary tract infections that can progress to kidney infections. “Atrophic vaginitis with dryness, itching and burning doesn’t happen overnight; it happens gradually. Many women who are not seeing a gynecologist regularly for checkups are unaware of the gradual decrease of their progesterone and estrogen,” advises the founder of the Heal n Cure Medical Wellness Center, in Glenview, Illinois.

“Women generally self-treat sexual discomfort from dryness first with self-prescribed, over-the-counter gels, suppositories and creams, which are temporary fixes,” Malhotra says. “Functional medicine, which allows for longer appointments, in-depth intake and more intimate conversations, can determine the root cause of vaginal dryness, which can be treated early with FormaV, a non-surgical, painless rejuvenation procedure which tightens loose labia, improves vaginal health and makes sexual intimacy desirable again.”

Known as “the girlfriend doctor”, triple board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist Anna Cabeca has been in practice for 23 years and is the author of The Hormone Fix: Burn Fat Naturally, Boost Energy, Sleep Better, and Stop Hot Flashes, the Keto-Green Way. Recognizing that many over-the-counter lubricants perpetu-

ate dryness and create damage to the tissue, she formulated her own products. “Inflammation can happen because of a reaction to the ingredients in the lubricant. I tell my patients that they can make their own lubricant using organic coconut oil mixed with aloe vera gel and a few drops of an essential oil that turns their partner on. They can also strengthen the pelvic floor with Kegel exercises and eat a keto-green diet,” Cabeca suggests.

Dr. Rebecca Hunton, the founder of Radiantly Healthy MD, in Melbourne, Florida, believes that treating the changes in a woman’ s body is a form of personalized medicine. “Every woman’s journey is different, but generally before vaginal dryness comes progesterone deficiency. Symptoms include trouble falling asleep, anxiousness and moodiness,” she says, adding that not all vaginal dryness is hormone-related, as an autoimmune disorder could also be a cause.

Hunton recommends, “Starting early with a transdermal progesterone cream can mitigate some dryness, but at a certain point, progesterone won’t suffice. There are nonsurgical treatments such as MonaLisa Touch, a laser treatment that brings the tissue in the vagina to a more youthful state. It needs to be repeated every 18 months to two years.”

These doctors all agree that women no longer have to power through the changes. There are answers. As Cabeca asserts, “This is a time that heralds a second spring of our lives and should be a beautiful journey.”

DAILY ROUTINES FOR A RADIANT APPEARANCE

While many of us work out to tone our muscles, we may be neglecting the largest organ in the body: our skin. Every day, it is exposed to a variety of irritants, including ultraviolet rays, air pollution, extreme weather and highly processed foods. Stress can also cause skin irritations and conditions. To serve its important functions and look healthy, our skin needs a fitness regimen. With a few daily routines, lifestyle modifications and coping strategies, a radiant appearance is within reach.

responsible for keeping the skin firm and supple. When they are damaged, the skin becomes saggy.

CHRONIC CONDITIONS: Stress can trigger or worsen skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and rosacea, which are characterized by inflammation, dryness and itching.

Lifestyle Tips to Improve Skin Health

GET ENOUGH SLEEP. A good night’s sleep is essential for skin health. It also helps reduce the impact of daily stress. Aim for no less than seven hours of shut-eye each night.

EXERCISE REGULARLY. Getting our bodies moving is essential to reduce stress levels and improve skin health by increasing blood flow, nutrient delivery and oxygenation to the skin.

EAT A HEALTHY DIET. “An anti-inflammatory diet full of fruits, veggies and healthy fats like those from seeds and nuts will help to keep skin healthy,” says Jennifer Scheinman, a registered dietitian and nutrition coach. “Foods rich in omega-3 fats like salmon and walnuts are great for skin health since they have natural anti-inflammatory properties, and the fats help to keep skin moisturized.”

Skin Conditions

Exacerbated by Stress

ACNE: When we are stressed, our body releases cortisol, a hormone that stimulates the production of pore-clogging oils, which can lead to the formation of acne. Stress also triggers inflammation, which can worsen existing acne.

PREMATURE AGING: Stress can accelerate the aging process by reducing the skin’s elasticity and causing wrinkles and fine lines. It triggers the production of free radicals, precipitating damage to collagen and elastin fibers, which are

PRACTICE STRESS-RELIEVING TECHNIQUES. Engage in activities that help manage stress, such as yoga, meditation or deep-breathing exercises.

APPLY SKIN-CARE PRODUCTS DESIGNED FOR THE PERSON’S SKIN TYPE. According to Dr. Trevor Cates, author of Clean Skin From Within and Natural Beauty Reset, “The most important care tip is to find skin care with mild acidity [4.5 to 5.4 pH] and natural actives [plant-based extracts] that support the skin microbiome. A healthy skin microbiome means less chance for breakouts, blemishes and premature aging.”

According to Dr. Anne Marie Fine, author of Cracking the Beauty Code, “Air pollution has been demonstrated to prematurely age the skin and cause age spots. This is why you want to make sure to consume antioxidants and use antioxidantcontaining, clean skin-care products.”

Therapies to Enhance the Skin

RED-LIGHT THERAPY DEVICES use infrared light to stimulate collagen production, improve circulation and promote healing. This reduces wrinkles, fine lines, age spots and other signs of aging.

MICROCURRENT FACIAL TOOLS use low-level electrical currents to stimulate facial muscles, helping to tone, reduce puffiness and promote a youthful appearance.

LASERS DESIGNED FOR HOME USE offer a safe way to treat various skin issues such as wrinkles, acne scars, sun damage and pigmentation problems. They can also help even out skin tone by stimulating collagen production in the deeper layers of the skin.

GUA SHA is an ancient Chinese technique that involves gently scraping the surface of the skin with a special tool to increase blood flow, promote healing and reduce puffiness and inflammation.

OXYGEN TREATMENTS infused into pores using a special device can help nourish skin cells, decrease inflammation, reduce wrinkles and improve overall complexion.

FACIAL ACUPUNCTURE

inserting tiny needles into specific points to stimulate energy flow, which may improve circulation, reduce tension and promote smoother skin.

FACIAL MASSAGE

by stimulating collagen production in the deeper layers of the skin. It promotes circulation, drainage and toning.

Radiant Skin

WITH YOGA AND BREATHWORK

Happy spring. It’s time for all things new and that includes not just spring cleaning the home, but also our appearance. Let’s learn about how to refresh and revitalize that healthy glow in our cheeks the natural way, with yoga.

Our skin is the largest organ in our body and it protects our muscles and bones, and releases toxins from our body through our pores. But it does much more than that; it reflects our age and how we’re feeling, so it’s important for us to take care of this amazing organ.

Yoga, an ancient philosophy and lifestyle, offers many techniques to improve and strengthen our skin. Yoga is a Sanskrit word meaning union of our body, mind and spirit. We will look younger and so will our skin. Practicing yoga can help us feel strong and healthy—mentally, emotionally and physically. Through breathing, movement and relaxation, our skin will maintain a healthy glow. There are some wonderful, easy yoga techniques that will help us stay younger, add life to our years and subtract years from our appearance.

Breathing

The quickest and most effective way to rejuvenate skin is to purify the bloodstream by taking in extra oxygen. Taking full, deep breaths in and out through the nose can increase the amount of oxygen in our bloodstream which is essential for proper and efficient functioning of the brain, nerves, glands and organs. Breathing techniques (called pranayama) rid the body of toxins and revitalize and rejuvenate the skin, keeping it looking healthy and vibrant. Try pranayama techniques for radiant skin. Alternate Nostril Breathing (also called Nadi Shodhana) is a favorite technique for calming, soothing and rejuvenating both body and mind. It helps relieve stress, and it’s a great “reset” tool when we’re feeling overwhelmed, worried or anxious. The breathing pattern for this exercise is Inhale, Switch, Exhale.

PREPARE:

1. Sit in a comfortable, upright position on a mat on the floor or in a chair. Spine should be long and straight. Relax hips, shoulders and jaw. Left hand on the left knee with palm facing upward. Close our eyes.

2. With the right hand, place the index finger and middle finger on the forehead between the eyebrows. The ring finger rests on the left nostril and the thumb on the right nostril. (The ring finger will be used to close the left nostril and the thumb will be used for the right nostril.)

BREATHE:

1. Inhale. Use the thumb to close the right nostril and inhale completely through the left nostril.

2. Switch. Lift the thumb from the right nostril and close the left nostril with the ring finger.

3. Exhale. Exhale through the right nostril.

4. Inhale. Inhale through the right nostril.

5. Switch. Lift the ring finger from the left nostril and close the right nostril with the thumb.

6. Exhale. Exhale through the left nostril.

CHECK:

• That’s one round of Alternate Nostril Breathing.

• Perform five to 10 rounds per sitting.

• Keep the breathing natural and gentle.

Medical and Health Considerations: As with any new exercise, stop if feeling any discomfort. It is important to learn and practice breath work under the supervision of a trained professional. Breath work is an excellent way to improve health and well- being, though it is not a substitute for medical treatment. Consult a doctor if there’s a medical condition.

Movement

Now that we’ve tried a breathing exercise to oxygenate and rejuvenate our skin, move on to a yoga flow for a healthy glow.

YOGA | A SPECIAL SECTION

Radiant Skin Yoga Flow

Radiant Skin Yoga Flow is a fun and effective series of two yoga poses that combine breathing and movement, and it’s known to be beneficial in refreshing and revitalizing our skin. We’ll flow from child’s pose, to cobra pose and back to child’s pose while breathing deeply through our nostrils. Try this in the morning and see how many compliments we get during the day.

MOVE:

• Come into the child’s pose. Sit back on our heels and rest our forehead on a towel or mat. Breathe in and out three to five times.

• Come forward onto our belly. Rest the forehead on the towel or mat and place fingertips in line with the tops of shoulders.

• Keep our elbows in toward our body. Gently press our shoulders back and down.

• Inhale and slowly lift our face up toward the sky and then allow the rest of our upper body to follow. Keep our hips on the ground. Breathe deeply in and out three to five breaths.

• Exhale and lower down onto our belly. Then, press back into the child’s pose. Relax all the muscles in the face.

• Repeat cobra/child’s pose three to five times. Then rest in the child’s pose for two minutes.

BENEFITS:

• Strengthens the muscles around the spine.

• Lengthens the abdominal muscles and front of the neck.

• Strengthens and tones the liver and kidneys.

• Strengthens the shoulders and chest.

• Increases blood flow around the lower back and hips.

• Brings a healthy glow to the face and skin.

CHECK:

• If we have back pain, perform only child’s pose.

• If our shoulders are uncomfortable, raise up only to where it is comfortable, or just perform child’s pose.

• Move easily from child’s pose to cobra pose. Notice how our body feels and choose the most nourishing choice.

• If you have knee situations, omit child’s pose and rest on our belly.

Enjoy the beautiful weather this spring and face the world with a fresh glow and healthy skin using yoga and breathwork—natural ways to increase health, wellness and beauty.

THE BEAUTY AND BENEFITS OF Restorative Yoga

There are many different forms of yoga and many ways to practice. While some will practice everyday with an intensity about how they focus, others may choose to make yoga a more occasional habit or something done every so often. No matter how one chooses to move forward in practice, restorative yoga is something that benefits all. A restorative session takes the practitioner back to the meditative place of yoga. It will help to align the breath and the heart and to relax and care for the parts of the body that are worked throughout a more vigorous yoga practice.

We all need time to reset, recharge and realign. It is important to come back to the foundations and to set our physical body in line with our mental and spiritual body. Regardless

of why a person is drawn to continuing, deepening or beginning a yoga practice, there is no doubt that whatever the motivation, restorative yoga is a benefit.

The key elements of a restorative yoga practice are unlike other types of yoga as the restorative yoga practice is one in which poses are held for an extended period, about five minutes. Restorative yoga tends to use props such as blankets, blocks and bolsters. Using these props helps to support the body while allowing the practitioner to deepen the pose and more fully relax. Coming to a place of calm is essential within the restorative practice.

It is often said that the three main tenants of restorative yoga are observation, support and compassion. Those are takeaways that we can apply into our daily life as well. Restorative yoga can not only help to balance us in our own personal yoga practice, but it can help with how we move through our day-to-day life. It can help to shift thought processes into a more positive and stable way of thinking and being.

It is important to begin a restorative session knowing that it is a time to relax, to be mindful, and to let go—not just of thoughts that weigh us down, but of emotions or feelings that keep us from being our best selves. Restorative yoga is a space for each person to find the best version of themselves and to channel a new style of positive energy.

Those ready to give restorative yoga a try can start by adding a restorative class once every other week. As our yoga practice progresses or if it is already an advanced practice, we can then consider committing to a weekly restorative yoga class.

Namaste and best of luck on the journey to peace.
