NATURE • COMMUNITY • FAMILY • WELLNESS

BE A PART OF A CLEANER FUTURE

Arlington’s Adopt-A-Spot campaign rolled out earlier this year and has already helped tremendously to clean up community streets, parks, and residential areas. This campaign was enacted under the Keep Arlington Beautiful(KAB) plan to assist schools, businesses, civic groups, neighborhood associations, and other organizations within Arlington to help keep areas though out the city clean of debris, trash, graffiti, etc. The “Adopt-a-Spot” program will be made available to 20 areas within Council District No. 1. If successful, KAB may expand the program to the City at large. KAB wants to be proactive in establishing new ideas and programs that show results. The members of KAB are partnering with the Department of Parks and Recreation to encourage participation in the program to clean-up Arlington. “So many of our residents work hard maintaining and beautifying their properties. The results of that care and attention foster tremendous pride in their neighborhoods. The Adopt-a-Spot is the perfect program to encourage residents and businesses to make the same commitment to the City’s public spaces and extend that pride throughout the entire City,” Council member Parker remarks.

What are some of the benefits of Arlington’s Adopt-A-Spot campaign? • The City of Arlington will be a much cleaner environment for the people in the community as well as a safer place for kids and families. • Not only can Volunteers pick up trash, like paper, plastic and Styrofoam, but also they can clean up debris like small fallen limbs, and piles of leaves in the fall. • By enlisting the help of Volunteers the City of Arlington saves money with can be put towards improving the community in other aspects, like park updates and events.. • Volunteers will receive safety vest, disposable gloves, and garbage bags on a one time basis to assist with clean up efforts.

unplug&connect Unplugging from our work, our devices and our hectic schedules is crucial for our health and wellness. AWARDS & ACCOLADES APRD MARKETING TEAM WINS AWARDS

Arlington Parks and Recreation’s marketing team won three awards from the Texas Association of Municipal Information Officers (TAMIO) at the conference in 2015. The awards were honors for Special Publications (Naturally Fun Magazine), Most Creative for Least Dollars (Eco-Man Video), and Internal Communications (Marketing Plan). Arlington Parks and Recreation’s new website NaturallyFun.org also earned the Texas Recreation & Park Society (TRAPS) 2014 Website Excellence award and also received national honors for Best Website Design by LERN.

ARBOR DAY FOUNDATION HONORS ARLINGTON

Arlington is a 16-time honoree of the Tree City USA award by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. The community also received a Tree City USA Growth Award for demonstrating environmental improvement and higher level of tree care. Arlington achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program’s four requirements: a tree board, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation. The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.

ARLINGTON DESIGNATED A “PLAYFUL CITY USA”

Once again, Arlington proves it really knows how to play. For the eighth straight year, national non-profit KaBOOM! has designated Arlington as one of its Playful City USA communities for its efforts to increase play opportunities for children and its outstanding dedication to play. The KaBOOM! Playful City USA program, sponsored by the Humana Foundation, honors cities, towns and communities across America that are taking bold steps to ensure that all children, especially the 16 million American kids living in poverty, have easy access to balanced and active play in their communities. Arlington is one of just two cities in Texas to have earned eight distinctions.

ARLINGTON WINS KEEP TEXAS BEAUTIFUL AWARD The City of Arlington and the APRD Forestry and Beautification division earned first place in Keep Texas Beautiful’s Government Award (Texas cities with population of 50,000+). The award is given to municipalities that make outstanding contributions to the Texas environment.

The City of Arlington’s Forestry and Beautification (FAB) Division works with Keep Arlington Beautiful (KAB) to achieve KAB’s mission of environmental conservation and education. Among the many contributions, in an effort to promote water conservation at City facilities and parks, the FAB Division installed native landscaping at the Parks and Recreation main office in the spring of 2013. This project included a 10,000 gallon water harvesting cistern that is estimated to collect up to 172,000 gallons of water annually. FAB has also created an educational component for schools, events, and forestry camps to discuss conservation of trees, water, prairies and wildlife. By coordinating tree planting events, FAB is currently working toward their goal to raise Arlington’s Urban Forest canopy by planting over 30,000 trees in 10 years. The initiative is part of the Tree North Texas program, the largest tree planting initiative in the nation, with a plan to plant over 3 million trees in North Texas during the next decade. Through cleanup events, FAB engages community volunteers in the removal of thousands of trash bags of waste from creeks, streams and waterways. To assist in many of these events, FAB staff also coordinates the funding for Keep Arlington Beautiful’s Mobile Litter Unit. The unit is stocked full with litter pickup tools, and is made available free of charge to Arlington residents and businesses for beautification and litter pickup.

APRD TAKES TOP STATE HONORS

Each year, the Texas Recreation and Park Society (TRAPS) recognizes and honors individuals and organizations that have rendered significant contributions to the field of parks and recreation. In 2014, the City of Arlington Parks and Recreation Department took home five awards, including the Gold Medal for Class I. The Texas Gold Medal Awards are modeled after those of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). The biggest achievement that a department can earn on the state level, these awards honor departments for excellence in the field of recreation and park management for the past three (3) years.

Foundation. A city-wide facility at Vandergriff Park, as well as several small skate-lets located in linear parks, are scheduled to open in 2014.

Sue Phillips, a long-time resident of east Arlington, received the “Outstanding Service Award”. The award is given to an individual that has contributed extensive volunteer time toward providing leisure service programs, facilities, actively supported bond proposals through the local community. Phillips is a member of the Arlington Parks Board and the founder of east Arlington renewal.

The ReLEAF program earned the APRD the “Lone Star Recreation Programming Achievement Award” in recognition for innovative and effective recreation programming during the Arlington Tornado ReLEAF tree planting event. During the one-day event last November, the city planted 1,000 trees to replace ones that were lost during the tornadoes that ravaged southwest and west Arlington in April of 2012. Over 500 volunteers came together to assist the APRD with the effort.

OLDE TOWN CHRISTMAS

The APRD received the “Planning for Excellence” award for the city-wide skate park master plan. On March 12, 2013, the APRD hosted the grand opening of the Cody Rocamontes Memorial Skatepark, located at Randol Mill Park. Arlington’s first skate park was built with funding from Cody Rocamontes Inc., a Tony Hawk Foundation grant awarded to CRI and a grant from the Arlington Tomorrow

The department also took home the “Park Design Exellence” award for its design of the River Legacy Parks nature playground (pictured below).

Feature

Telling your story

W

e’re here to create moments. We believe that parks, recreational opportunities and open spaces provide a foundation for the physical, social, economic and environmental viability and well-being of Arlington. Can you recall your first time on a swing, or initial leap off the diving board? Maybe the first dance with your daughter or that long birdie putt on the 18th green? The Arlington Parks and Recreation Department wants to hear all about you and what you love to do at parks, pools, and recreation centers in the American Dream City. We want to hear from people in our community about what makes our parks, and recreational facilities, special to you. We’ve recently launched a new campaign called People of Parks, as an avenue to share your great stories. The first video feature in this campaign highlights an APRD partnership with Arlington Police Department, where members of our crafting club at Eunice

Activity Center knit teddy bears that are given to children by our APD officers when called to a domestic disturbance, auto accident or other stressful situation. We encourage you to check out the video on our YouTube channel and get involved in this great cause. “People of Parks was created to celebrate the great stories occurring in our parks and recreational facilities on a daily basis. From a soldier returning home to surprise his son on his 16th birthday, to this month’s feature on the amazing women of our crafting club, it’s a treat for us as a staff to be able to discover and share some of these wonderful moments.” PHILLIP ROGERS Marketing and Enterprise Development Manager

Arlington is on the sports map!

his summer in the Dream City was quite the eventful one! Arlington cemented itself as an amateur sports destination on par with its professional counterparts.

Summer of 2015, the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) hosted the World Series for youth baseball across the DFW Metroplex. The week-long tournament attracted teams from all over Texas and neighboring states. A total of 500 teams ranging in ages 6-15 participated at city parks across Dallas, Fort Worth, and Arlington. Arlington hosted games at Cravens Park, Martin Luther King Sports Center and the Dunlop Sports Center. “We are excited to have an event of this nature in Arlington. Teams and families are staying in Arlington hotels and eating in our restaurants. It’s a great economic impact to the community” said Michael Debrecht, of the Arlington Parks and Recreation Department.

Arlington Tennis Center also hosted two national tournaments earlier this year. The US Open Sectional Qualifying Tournament brought athletes from around the region to compete for a bid in the 2015 US Open National Playoffs. ATC also hosted the USTA Boys and Girls Zonal Tournament Championships in early July that attracted youth participants from all around the country to Arlington. Tierra Verde Golf Club in southwest Arlington hosted the PGA Junior Series Golf Tournament on June 5-7, 2015. The event was won by 15-year-old Cole Hammer (72-65-70), who qualified for the US Open a day later in a sectional qualifying event in Dallas. “It is exciting to see youth coming from across the region and country to Arlington to play in recreational activities. Arlington is on the map for amateur and professional sports” stated Gary Packan, Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation.

It’s hard to find a more beautiful course than the award-winning Tierra Verde Golf Club. Tierra Verde is the first golf course in Texas and the first municipal course in the world to be certified as an Audubon Signature Sanctuary. Walk onto the first tee and enter an environment where golf and nature come together in harmony.

Named after life-long resident of Arlington Chester W. Ditto, Ditto Golf Course is located in north Arlington, just 15 minutes from the DFW airport and near the heart of Arlington’s Entertainment District, featuring the Texas Rangers, Dallas Cowboys and Six Flags.

Opened in 1998, and carved from 250 acres of secluded terrain, the course’s unsurpassed layout encompasses a variety of natural settings and offers an outstanding playing experience on every hole. The course has been host to many prestigious events, including the Byron Nelson Qualifying Tournament on multiple occasions.

As a long-standing favorite among golfers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Chester Ditto is 18-holes of challenging golf blending plush fairways narrowed by trees and accented with strategically placed sand bunkers and landing areas.

Tierra Verde has been named the top golf course in the DFW Metroplex the last three years (2012-14) by AvidGolfer magazine.* Each hole has five sets of tees, sculpted fairways, strategically placed sand bunkers and water hazards - all accented by stately trees and beautiful native grasses. The facility features a state-of-the-art golf learning center, a lighted driving range, three-hole practice course and large chipping and putting green complex. Also offered are lessons and clinics taught by PGA/LPGA professionals and apprentices, an outdoor pavilion and full-service restaurant, Ventana Grille, that complement every event from small corporate outings to large fundraising tournaments.

A driving range, practice putting green and chipping area are offered to complete one’s golfing experience. The clubhouse offers snack bar concessions and a full line pro shop with today’s most popular equipment and apparel. Chester Ditto also offers tournaments and private and group lessons taught by PGA Professionals and Apprentices.

Chester Ditto was named one of AvidGolfer’s top-5 Value Priced Courses (Under $50) in its 2014 rankings. The course is currently in the Master Planning process for significant improvements to both the golf course and clubhouse. MEADOWBROOK PARK

City of Arlington Parks and Recreation • N A T U R A L L Y F U N . O R G

Arlington’s tradition of outstanding golf began in the 1920’s with Meadowbrook Park Golf Course. Conveniently located just east of downtown Arlington, the golf course provides an excellent choice for families and leagues. The golf course is the centerpiece of Arlington’s first city park. Arlington purchased the 52-acre site in 1923 and it was sponsored by the Arlington Rotary Club. The site includes picnic grounds and the tree-filled nine-hole golf course. Many of the holes feature vistas of nearby AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. Meadowbrook Park is the perfect facility to learn the game of golf and sharpen short-game skills. The 9-Hole, par-33 layout consists of six par 4s, 250 to 300 yards in length, and three par 3s, approximately 150 yards in length. The course can be easily walked or played under time constraints and has a long-standing commitment to beginning adult and junior golfers. Golf legends Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson once led golf clinics here. Its small greens and narrow fairways are designed to challenge every level of player. The clubhouse offers a full line pro shop, concessions, and golf cart rentals. Exclusive facility rental opportunities are available for both golf and non-golf outdoor activities. With a long-standing commitment to environmental enhancement and preservation, Meadowbrook Park Golf Course is like a walk in the park for the whole family!

MEADOWBROOK PARK HOME TO SECOND DFW FOOTGOLF COURSE The Arlington Parks and Recreation Department “kicked off” a new program in August of 2014 at the oldest golf course in Arlington. Meadowbrook Park Golf Course became the home of the City’s new FootGolf course. FootGolf is a combination of the popular sports of soccer and golf. Instead of golf clubs and golf balls, the game is played with a soccer ball and a 21-inch diameter cup. The rules mostly correlate with the rules of golf. While FootGolf is played throughout the world, it is estimated their are only 180 courses across the United States. The Meadowbrook Park Golf Course is the second course to open in DFW. The FootGolf layout utilizes the same routing as the golf course, with the FootGolf cups positioned in close proximity to the existing golf greens. Golf Course Superintendent Brick Scott heard about the idea this spring and introduced it to park officials earlier this summer. “We always want to find new ways to encourage people to get outside and recreate,” said Scott. This is a great way to introduce people to golf and a new activity that the whole family can enjoy.” 62

City of Arlington Parks and Recreation • N A T U R A L L Y F U N . O R G

The course has submitted paperwork to be certified by the Federation for International FootGolf (FIFG) and the American FootGolf League (AFGL). As a certified course, Meadowbrook Park could host local AFGL leagues, as well as state, regional and national tournaments. While most FootGolf venues are strictly par-3 courses, Meadowbrook Park has a par of 70, with a mix of shorter and longer holes. The cost for an 18-hole round of FootGolf is the same as a round of traditional golf. Prices start as low as $9.00 for adults and $7.50 for juniors. The course has rental soccer balls available for $3.00. Tee times are accepted up to a week in advance by phone or in person. To book your next round, please call the Pro Shop at 817275-0221. Weekend classes are offered Saturdays or Sundays over a period of nine weeks. Weekday lessons are on Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays and run for five weeks. Our Learn to Swim program includes parent / tot, preschool, adult and Red Cross certified swimming classes. We also offer private lessons for all ages. For more information, or to register for the Learn to Swim program, please call Hugh Smith Indoor Pool at 817-275-0513.

LEVEL ASSESSMENT The City of Arlington’s Learn to Swim Program follows the American Red Cross Swim and Water Safety Program. We assess each child on the first day of class to help with accurate placement of the child in the correct level. If possible, we will move the child to a level that best suits his or her skill level. If a child is registered in the incorrect class, every effort will be made to place them into a class of an appropriate level but cannot be guaranteed. We ask parents to help assist us with registering their child in the correct level by talking to their child’s instructor at the end of the session and/or following the guidelines below.

Spotlight

ERIN WARD AQUATICS DIVISION

E

rin Ward always knew that she wanted a career where she would be helping people; seeing them work towards a common goal. That is why Ward chose to major in athletic training since she enjoyed the emergency training part of it. A lifeguard since the age of 16, Ward continued the job throughout college, but soon developed a passion for the programming side of the aquatics division. She enjoyed learning the roles and responsibilities of the aquatics managers, and how they helped with not only planning courses for aquatics, but also serving as a catalyst for first-time swimmers eventual love for the water. Ward would eventually change her major to Recreation and Leisure studies, as she fell in love with her work at the pools. Ward became Arlington’s Aquatics Program Coordinator (APC) last March. Ward went through weeks of training, as well as months of getting everything prepared in pre-season

before the rush of the summer swim season began. Overseeing swim lessons, planning extracurricular activities, running around the City to seven different pools and managing a staff of about 150 people all sounded slightly overwhelming at first, but Ward loved the job and jumped right in. Ward said that the most rewarding part of the job is that she is more than just a boss to some 15 to 25 year-old employees; she is 25% boss, 25% sister, 25% counselor and 25% parent all rolled into one.

Even the lifeguards who come in without a day of work experience and leave as responsible teenagers, really make the job worthwhile for Ward. “I love seeing the development of our staff and program participants and how the atmosphere that we provide at our pools can really change someone,” said Ward. Even though this first summer for the new Aquatic Programs Coordinator has come to an end, Ward is still happy about this exciting roller-coaster adventure, and looks forward to learning more as she goes along.

Another thing that always puts a smile on Ward’s face is seeing the accomplishments of the people who take the courses offered at the pools. Whether it’s the kids going through swimming lessons, that start as nonswimmers and develop a healthy relationship with the water, or the ones that go from comfortable in the water to being full-on confident swimmers. Arlington Dog PArks Do you love taking Fido outside for a good long play time, or perhaps bringing the newest part of your family out for some positive dog socialization? Then Tails N’ Trails Dog Park is the perfect hangout for you and your furry, four-legged friend!

ALL ABOUT RUSH CREEK DOG PARK: We know that everyone loves the Tails N’ Trails Dog Park, but did you know that the City of Arlington Parks and Recreations department is also in the early planning stages for a brand new dog park?

With over 5 acres of fresh green grass there is plenty of room for dogs of any size to run around and befriend all sorts of new pups. To make sure all dogs are kept safe and secure inside Tails N’ Trails Dog Park, there are fenced in, designated areas for smaller dogs under 18 inches and a separate area for larger dogs 19 inches and taller. The entrances to both areas are double gated to allow you to get your dog(s) unleashed and ready, as well as preventing any of the dogs already inside from attempting escape.

RUSH CREEK AMENITIES: • $500,000 approved by Arlington voters in the 2014 Bond Election.

This lovely park includes 5.7 acres, large dog off leash area, small dog off leash area, shaded areas, benches, walking nature trails, and water fountains. 950 SE Green Oaks Blvd, Arlington, TX 76018 (817) 459-5474 Mon. - Fri. 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM. Sat. 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Closed Sunday 74

• Part of the Rush Creek Mitigation Plan. • Located on Pioneer Parkway (bordered by Valleywood Drive and Woodland Park Boulevard) 7.5 acres in size. • Currently in the consultant design phase (now through March 2016). Will then move into the Bidding/Construction phase (March 2016 – October 2016) • This dog park will have two parking lots that can accommodate up to 60 vehicles, separate fenced in areas for large and small breed dogs, shade structures and benches for owners, and a dog washing area.

KEEP ARLINGTON

BEAUTIFUL KeepArlingtonBeautiful.com

Keep Arlington Beautiful

The mission of Keep Arlington Beautiful (KAB), Gold Star Affiliate of Keep Texas Beautiful, is to educate and engage the Arlington community to take responsibility for improving their environment. KAB members strongly encourage community involvement and environmental stewardship. Become part of why Arlington is the American Dream City by getting involved in volunteer efforts, attending local environmental classes, becoming a Board member and liking us on Facebook. In 2014, the Arlington Parks and Recreation Department and Keep Arlington Beautiful logged 58 volunteer events performed by 3,900 volunteers. This year the volume of volunteer commitment has significantly increased, estimating figures to double by the end of 2015, meaning great things for the City of Arlington. Keep Arlington Beautiful is entering a challenging and exciting time, as economic pressures on our City increases, and the demand for our services continues to rise. The tradition of high quality service provision and activism related to litter abatement, beautification, and awareness to the residents of the City of Arlington is evident in KAB’s work. The City of Arlington introduced a new program to help fight litter and beautify the City. The Mobile Litter Unit is a trailer loaded with community clean-up supplies that is available for organizations, businesses and neighborhoods to reserve free of charge to aid in beautification. Along with this program, KAB and the City of Arlington launched a pilot Adopt- a-Spot Program in July 2015, to focus on public spaces, parks, trails, and right- of –ways. Under KAB’s plan, civic groups, schools, business, neighborhood associations and other organizations within the city limits of Arlington can apply to “adopt” an area that is convenient to them or that they use on a frequent basis that needs periodic clean-up. As the program gains momentum, KAB encourages community members to take action and join in the mission to Keep Arlington Beautiful. For more information on our volunteer opportunities, please visit us on or webpage, the volunteer tab of our Facebook page or feel free to email KAB@arlingtontx.gov! To reserve the MLU for your next community clean-up or to learn more about Adopt-a-Spot, email KAB@arlingtontx.gov or call 817.459.5477
