ARLINGTON WINS NATIONAL GOLD MEDAL AWARD For Excellence in Park and Recreation Management A commitment to the highest level of service in parks and recreation has paid off for the Arlington Parks and Recreation department. They have been awarded the 2018 National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management. The American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration (AAPRA), in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), awarded this honor to Arlington during the Opening General Session at the 2018 NRPA Annual Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana. Founded in 1965, the Gold Medal Awards program honors communities throughout the United States that demonstrate excellence in parks and recreation through long-range planning, resource management, volunteerism, environmental stewardship, program development, professional development and agency recognition.
Agencies are judged on their ability to address the needs of those they serve through the collective energies of community members, staff and elected officials. "What an achievement for the parks and recreation staff, park board, numerous advisory and volunteer groups, and City as a whole," Arlington Mayor Jeff Williams said. "Our parks system is often the gateway into Arlington for many residents and visitors alike, and I'm thrilled to see our parks department receive this welldeserved recognition for the outstanding work they do on a daily basis." Arlington Parks and Recreation won the Grand Plaque in the Class II category (population 150,001–400,000). The department was also named a finalist for the prestigious honor in 2014, 2016 and 2017.
The other three finalists in Class II were Arlington County Department of Parks and Recreation (Arlington, Va.), Tampa Parks and Recreation Department (Tampa, Fla.) and Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District (Beaverton, Ore). A panel of five park and recreation professionals reviews and judges all application materials. Judges are chosen for their considerable experience and knowledge in parks and recreation on both the local and national levels. Arlington released its 2018 gold medal application to the public, which can be viewed at gold.naturallyfun.org/. "This award is significant in terms of the recognition it provides the agency on an International scale, but more importantly, it highlights the collective will of our residents, City Council and city staff in providing the highest quality of life for our citizens," said Director of Parks and Recreation Lemuel Randolph. ARLINGTON RECIEVES 3 REGIONAL AWARDS
Arlington Parks and Recreation was the recipient of three awards at the 2018 Texas Recreation & Park Society’s (TRAPS) North Region Conference, held on Friday, Oct. 19, in Rockwall, Texas. Arts & Humanities Programming Award Stars of Texas Project The Star of Texas project is a public art initiative that celebrates the City’s brand, “Arlington: The American Dream City”, and public art in our community. It was sponsored by the City of Arlington, Downtown Arlington Management and the Arlington Museum of Art and includes 20 five-foot tall, fiberglass stars, each one representing an artist’s interpretation of the living the American Dream in Arlington. The stars are positioned throughout Arlington including many in our parks system. In 2016, the City and the Arlington Museum of Art launched the “Star of Texas Challenge” with a simple, fun purpose: challenge visitors and residents to visit all 20 stars and share their photos on social media. Winners received a special edition “Star of Texas” t-shirt. The City also created a separate Facebook page and website for the challenge, http://www. arlington-tx.gov/star-of-texaschallenge/, which provided a detailed Google map for each star’s location.

Communications/Marketing Award Social Media Content and Strategy Through a strategic approach to social media communications and marketing that includes content on Snapchat, Nextdoor, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram, the parks marketing team has elevated program/event awareness, built brand loyalty, increased its social media following and driven revenue to the department.
Excellence in Senior Programming Award Aging Well Expo The City of Arlington’s 2018 Aging Well Expo served over 1,500 adults throughout the Tarrant County community. This free expo was packed with health professionals, a variety of informative presentations on wellness, health screenings, fitness demonstrations and much more which engaged and empowered adults of all ages.
The marketing division is now able to track targeted Facebook and Google AdWords campaigns through the sales transaction from its new online registration platform, providing a clear ROI from specific advertising campaigns.
On top of learning ways to improve their health and lifestyles, participants also received information on various services and resources available such as housing opportunities and volunteerism throughout the city.
Always seeking innovative ways to reach residents of all ages, Arlington was one of the first in Texas to utilize the NextDoor neighborhood community and Snapchat. The marketing team created a Snapchat geofilter for its Light Up Arlington Independence Day Celebration. Attendees that accessed Snapchat within the predetermined radius were greeted with a customized photo frame that encouraged users to utilize the #LUA2018 hashtag.
By taking ‘Senior’ out of the name of the Health and Wellness Fair last year, Arlington Parks was able to expand offerings and educational opportunities impacting a wider age range of adults. This one small change allowed Arlington Parks to reach beyond the senior population and influence active adults as young as 30 years old through aging seniors in their late 80s and up.

EXCELLENCE IN YOUTH SPORTS WINNER More than 7,000 children participate in Arlington Parks and Recreation's high-quality youth programs. For almost two decades, the Excellence in Youth Sports Award has recognized programs that are doing superior jobs of conducting diverse activities with a focus on providing safe and positive experiences for all participants - including children, parents and coaches. Each year hundreds of youth sports programs across the country and military bases worldwide vie to be an award winner. Developed by the National Alliance for Youth Sports and Athletic Business Magazine, the first Excellence in Youth Sports Awards were presented in 2000. “Our participants are winning in social skills, teamwork and physical fitness while having fun,” says Wendy Parker, athletics director at the City of Arlington Parks and Recreation Department. “Arlington is an unparalleled example of the power that comes about when people care about their young citizens.” With plenty of select and travel team opportunities throughout the city, the Arlington staff made their programs all about the kids – and making sure every one of them was having fun. And what has transpired is remarkable.
Today, more than 7,000 children participate in its high-quality recreation programs. Plus, earlier this year the staff earned the Better Sports for Kids Quality Program Provider designation for providing a youth sports culture that is zeroed in on teaching important attributes like teamwork and social skills, promoting physical fitness, and making sure every step along the way is filled with fun. “We offer some things that are just a little bit different, like our Tiny Tots Triathlon,” Parker says. “It is geared to that younger age group of 8 and under where they bring out their tricycles or bikes; they’ll run a little bit; and then for the water element we do water slides. I can tell you it’s a battle for mom and dad to get them off that water slide at the end of the day! We approach things a little bit differently.” The department’s “Playing is Winning” philosophy is a powerful program principle that is changing young lives every day. “We definitely hit a homerun with our program philosophy,” Parker says. “In the past 10 years, Arlington has grown in participation across the board."
"Our program is designed to capture the 95 percent of kids that want to play and have fun knowing they are not seeking a college scholarship. We are building the love and passion for the game in hopes that these young players will become adult participants and one day coach their kids in our program. That is one of our goals through the ‘Playing is Winning’ design. Focus on the participant and a lifetime of sports adventures.” Arlington’s youth sports programming includes a variety of options for kids ages 3 to 14, including soccer, t-ball, coach-pitch, kid pitch, volleyball, girls’ softball, lacrosse and basketball. “Our program philosophy was adopted as a main principle. We have not wavered on its mission,” Parker says. “Our future success will be measured by our youth’s passion for lifelong sports and physical fitness. Winning the Excellence in Youth Sports Award means that we are viewed as a prestigious program that offers a wide array of sports and activities for all youth, regardless of their athletic ability. It also validates our ‘Playing is Winning’ program philosophy, which focuses on the participant.”

CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS
Arlington Parks and Recreation is committed to creating parks, facilities, and green spaces for you and your family to enjoy. With park fees, bonds, and other sources of income, we’re able to renovate and create facilities to fit your needs.
Arlington residents unanimously approved a package of bond projects that focus on streets, parks, fire facilities and libraries in the 2014 Bond Election. Take a minute to read about projects we’ve recently completed or that are already under way.

HARRIS ROAD PARK CONSTRUCTION COMPLETE Overview: Park construction is complete. SEE PAGE 32.
RIVER LEGACY TRAIL EXTENSION COMPLETE This section of trail extends north from the existing 7 mile marker.
The City of Arlington recently completed installation of two pedestrian bridges that will help extend the popular 7-mile trail by another half-mile, stretching the path east to the Fort Worth city limits. The steel bridges – one that is 100 feet long and the other that is 140 feet long – span small tributaries running through the heavily wooded north Arlington park. Arlington’s $1.3 million trail extension, completed in fall 2018, will fill in one of the gaps in what will eventually become a 64-mile-long trail system along the Trinity River between Dallas and Fort Worth.
These pathways are designed to create inviting amenities for long-distance runners, cyclists, and others who enjoy the outdoors. The trail through River Legacy Parks, the crown jewel of Arlington’s park system, is currently the largest continuous section in the regional hike and bike trail system. It curves around the western side of Riverside Golf Club and continue east to end at the SH 360 right of way.
A Transportation Alternative Program Grant from the Texas Department of Transportation is covering $461,532 of Arlington’s trail linkage project. The remaining portion is being paid for from the Arlington Parks and Recreation capital project budget. As part of its priority to Champion Great Neighborhoods, the Arlington City Council supports projects such as trails that are designed to improve the quality of life for residents. The trail connectivity between Fort Worth and Dallas will also help Enhance Regional Mobility, another City Council priority. Naturally Fun Magazine • S P R I N G 2 0 1 9

The last finishing touches are happening at the new Lake House. In 2015, the City Council directed staff to proceed with the design of phase one improvements to Richard Simpson Park. The design plans were completed June 2017 and presented to City Council for approval in August 2017 sealing a contract with Steele Freeman, Inc. This project aligns with the Arlington City Council priority to Champion Great Neighborhoods. The $3.5 million project has a contract time of 426 calendar days and will open for use early 2019. Construction is funded through the 2008 Bond Referendum and Arlington Tomorrow Foundation. 30
Richard Simpson Park is a 9-acre city park on the shoreline of Lake Arlington. It is one of only two Arlington parks that provide public access to Lake Arlington for recreational usage.
Since the park did not have an existing master plan, the project included site master planning, which included relocation of the lake activity room and office building to be elevated from the floodplain.
The 2008 Bond Election included $1 million to replace the existing Richard Simpson Park lake activity room and office, which was constructed in 1960.
With the park infrastructure being 30-plus years of age, the master plan also provides guidance for any future improvements as the City retires aging assets.
This building was used for a variety of rental and recreational activities and due to its location in the 100 year floodplain, physical conditions, and accessibility challenges, options for reinvesting in the structure were very limited.
For more information about this project, contact Eric Seebock at Eric.Seebock@ArlingtonTX.gov.

MEADOWBROOK PARK
City of Arlington Parks and Recreation • N A T U R A L L Y F U N . O R G
Arlington’s tradition of outstanding golf began in the 1920’s with Meadowbrook Park Golf Course. Conveniently located just east of downtown Arlington, the golf course provides an excellent choice for families and leagues. The golf course is the centerpiece of Arlington’s first city park. Arlington purchased the 52-acre site in 1923 and it was sponsored by the Arlington Rotary Club. The site includes picnic grounds and the tree-filled nine-hole golf course. Many of the holes feature vistas of nearby AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. Meadowbrook Park is the perfect facility to learn golf and sharpen short-game skills. The 9-Hole, par-33 layout consists of six par 4s, 250 to 300 yards in length, and three par 3s, approximately 150 yards in length. The course can be easily walked or played under time constraints and has a long-standing commitment to beginning adult and junior golfers. Golf legends Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson once led golf clinics here. Its small greens and narrow fairways are designed to challenge every level of player. The clubhouse offers a full line pro shop, concessions, and golf cart rentals. Exclusive facility rental opportunities are available for both golf and non-golf outdoor activities. With a long-standing commitment to environmental enhancement and preservation, Meadowbrook Park Golf Course is like a walk in the park for the whole family!

It’s hard to find a more beautiful course than the award-winning Tierra Verde Golf Club. Tierra Verde is the first golf course in Texas, and the first municipal course in the world, to be certified as an Audubon Signature Sanctuary. Walk onto the first tee and enter an environment where golf and nature come together in harmony. Opened in 1998 and carved from 250 acres of secluded terrain, the course’s unsurpassed layout encompasses a variety of natural settings and offers an outstanding playing experience on every hole. The course has hosted many prestigious events, including the Byron Nelson Qualifying Tournament.
Trade the typical parking lot views of other restaurants for Ventana Grille and the sights and sounds of Tierra Verde Golf Club — the first Audubon Signature Sanctuary golf course in Texas — where golf, dining and nature come together. Open to the public daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and offering a takeout menu, Ventana Grille’s affordable options under $10 makes it the perfect place for your next meal.
Tierra Verde has been named the top golf course in the Metroplex for three years (2012-14) by AvidGolfer magazine.*
Ideally located less than three miles from I-20 off US 287, Ventana Grille is an excellent place to grab a bite to eat and enjoy a couple of drinks after your round of golf. It’s a quick casual lunch spot for you and your co-workers, and the ideal setting to celebrate your next special event.
Each hole has five sets of tees, sculpted fairways, strategically placed sand bunkers and water hazards - all accented by stately trees and beautiful native grasses.
The kitchen is open daily from 6:30 AM to 9:00 PM and features Avid Golfer’s ‘Best Breakfast Burrito’ and daily lunch specials ranging from $7.95 to $9.95.
The facility features a state-of-the-art golf learning center, a lighted driving range, three-hole practice course and large chipping and putting green complex. Lessons and clinics are taught by PGA/LPGA professionals and apprentices, an outdoor pavilion and full-service restaurant, Ventana Grille, that complement every event from small corporate outings to large fundraising tournaments.
Be sure to visit ArlingtonGolf.com to see a list of upcoming events at Ventana Grille. Whether you are attending one of our special holiday functions, Ticket to Travel dinners or are just enjoying a meal away from home, Ventana Grille promises to be a delight to the taste buds. FREE MUSIC UNDER THE STARS The Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts in Arlington presents more than 50 free outdoor concerts a year with a broad-based concert calendar of professional musical artists, from world music to jazz and home-grown Texas country to hot, indie artists. The Levitt presents original artists, many of them Grammy Award winners. The Levitt’s weekly Family Movie Nights feature movies suitable for all ages. Last concert season, the Levitt Pavilion attracted more than 118,000 people to Downtown Arlington. The Levitt Pavilion experience is about building community as families, school groups, entire neighborhoods and people from all parts of our area join side by side in a safe, fun, casual atmosphere to enjoy live music together. Many of these families and groups would not have the opportunity to experience the magic of live music if they had to pay ticket prices. The Levitt Pavilion gives our community an accessible gathering place for free music open to everyone – all ages, all ethnicities, all neighborhoods and all income levels. Levitt Pavilion Arlington brings music and the performing arts to Arlington in a way thousands are responding to – available for everyone to enjoy under the stars.
