ARLINGTON PARKS HONORED AS ONE OF THE NATION'S BEST

The winner of the National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Parks and Recreation will be announced at the NRPA conference in September.

Arlington Parks was named a 2017 finalist for the National Gold Medal Award for excellence in Parks and Recreation.

T

he Arlington Parks and Recreation department was named a finalist for the 2017 National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management in May. The award was announced by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration, in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA).

Founded in 1965, the Gold Medal Award honors communities in the U.S. that demonstrate excellence in parks and recreation through long-range planning, resource management, volunteerism, environmental stewardship, program development, professional development and agency recognition. Applications are separated into seven classes, with five classes based on population, one class for armed forces recreation and one class for state park systems awarded on odd numbered years.

Arlington Parks and Recreation is a finalist in the Class II category (population 150,001–400,000).

The department was also named a finalist for the prestigious honor in 2014 and 2016. Arlington joins three other finalists in its class for the Grand Plaque Award, which will be announced live during the NRPA General Session at the 2017 NRPA Annual Conference in New Orleans, Sept. 26-28, 2017.

A panel of five park and recreation professionals reviews and judges all application materials. Judges are chosen for their considerable experience and knowledge in parks and recreation on both the local and national levels. Arlington released its 2017 Gold Medal application to the public, which can be viewed at Gold.NaturallyFun.org.

Arlington Parks was named a 2017 Playful City USA for the tenth year.

ational non-profit KaBOOM! awarded Arlington a Playful City USA recognition in May. The award honors cities and towns across the country for putting the needs of families first so kids can learn, grow and develop important life skills. These communities are transforming ordinary places into playful spaces and using play as a solution to the challenges facing their residents.

This is the tenth year for Arlington to be recognized.

In total, these communities feature more than 14,000 safe and engaging playspaces that serve more than 4 million kids.

Arlington Parks earned the Tree City USA recognition by meeting standards for urban forestry management.

T

he Tree City USA Program, sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, recognized Arlington for meeting the four core standards of sound urban forestry management.

The four core standards include maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry, and celebrating Arbor Day. Tree City USA communities are home to more than 143 million Americans. Arlington has earned this recognition for the past 18 years.

BUILD A DREAM SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

T

he Build A Dream Scholarship Program is for children (four months to 16 years of age) to register for many Arlington Parks and Recreation Department youth programs. Qualification for the scholarship is based upon federal income guidelines and is available to Arlington residents only. Due to limited funding, scholarships will be awarded on a first come, first serve basis.

Apply at the Parks and Recreation administrative office located at 717 W. Main St. Income verification, registration for classes and $5 fee per family required at the time of application. Scholarship awards $75 for one child and $150 for two or more.

Complete application and manual registration form with class selections prior to submission. Incomplete submissions cannot be processed. This is funded in part by the Arlington Tomorrow Foundation and the Community Development Block Grant.

I-30 GATEWAY MONUMENT INSTALLED Construction of Arlington’s first highway monument sign was completed June 2017.

W

ith the help of Keep Texas Beautiful and Texas Department of Transportation, the City of Arlington dedicated the new welcome monument on August 10, 2017.

The sign, which is located near Randol Mill Park, is 20 feet tall and reflects the City’s star logo greeting drivers entering into The American Dream City.

This $310,000 project was funded by a 2012 Keep Texas Beautiful Governor’s Community Achievement Award the Parks and Recreation Department received. The grant was designated to be used for the beautification of local rights-of-ways.

"Although the sign was a long time in its arrival, the quality and versatility of it is remarkable and enhances the experience of travelers arriving in Arlington," City Councilor Charlie Parker said. "The illumination variations allow the city to participate in various national celebrations. This gateway sign is a harbinger, announcing that you have arrived in the American Dream City.”

"It has taken us a few years to get to this date and we are excited to have the first of hopefully seven signs located at major entry points to Arlington," Assistant Parks Director Gary Packan said. "The sign is more a sculpture or piece of art based on how it was handcrafted."

The stainless steel structure was fabricated off-site and assembled in two parts on site. Contractor C. Green Scaping of Fort Worth poured the concrete foundation, Arc Enterprise fabricated and installed the star, and Arlington-based business 3DI Signs and Designs created Naturally Fun Magazine • F A L L 2 0 1 7

SENIOR FITNESS EQUIPMENT INSTALLED AT TWO PARKS Playgrounds for Seniors help build confidence, balance, and strength to combat falls.

A

rlington seniors can now enjoy, laugh and play their way to better health at the City’s two new Senior Wellness Plazas.

The North Texas Specialty Physicians (NTSP) Charitable Fund donated $60,000 worth of Xccent fitness equipment to Clarence Foster and Wimbledon parks in an effort to reduce falls, provide additional rehab locations, and encourage socialization for seniors among peers and younger generations.

"With the 'playgrounds for seniors' located near the children's playground in our parks, it allows an opportunity for seniors to participate in healthy activities while still keeping an eye on their grandchildren," Park Project Manager Jadey James said. "It may even inspire some to lead healthier lifestyles while spending special bonding time with their grandchildren."

The two ADA-compliant exercise systems were installed in the parks June 1, 2017. Clarence Foster and Wimbledon parks were chosen based on their relative proximity to senior recreation centers and senior populations.

"The equipment is the first of its kind in Arlington, and is something that the aging adult population has been requesting for years," James said.

Each system includes four different Wellness Stations with a total of 18 different activities. The stations are connected by a center deck allowing easy transfer between activities. Training tutorials on the individual systems explain the benefits of each activity and also provide a guide for proper use.

Falling is the leading cause of injury among adults 65 and older, which is why the system is designed to build and improve confidence, balance, and strength needed to reduce falls. The system incorporates a variety of activities that focus on flexibility and core strength.

"We sincerely appreciate that NTSP chose the Arlington Parks and Recreation Department to partner with to provide this opportunity for our community," James said.

The project aligns with the Arlington City Council priority to “Champion Great Neighborhoods.” Clarence Foster Park is located at 4400 Woodland Park Blvd and Wimbledon Park is located at 2300 Wimbledon Dr.

EDEN ROAD PARK DEVELOPMENT CONTINUES New park amenities include paved trail, playground, pavilion and parking lot.

onstruction work on Eden Road Park, located at 1860 Mansfield Webb Road, 76002, is estimated to be completed early this September.

The construction contract is for $930,800 and is being done by 2L Construction, LLC. Improvements are funded

by Park Development Fees.

New park amenities will include a 20 space concrete parking lot, a group picnic pavilion with grill, playground, picnic tables, benches, loop walking trail, open play areas, wildflower meadow areas, park monument sign, automated security gate, landscaping and irrigation.

BOB FINDLAY LINEAR PARK IMPROVEMENTS Construction to realign and widen the trail at Bob Findlay began in April.

C

onstruction work on Bob Findlay Linear Park Trail, located at 900 Findlay Drive, 76012, began in April 2017. The project involves replacing approximately 0.8 mile of antiquated trail.

The existing hike and bike trail was heavily used and has been in place for over 20 years. The new concrete trail is 12' wide, providing for greater opportunities for shared usage.

This much needed trail improvement will also be slightly realigned enhancing the overall quality of the trail and park goers experience.

DITTO GOLF COURSE CONSTRUCTION CONTINUES The new course is scheduled to open next spring out of a temporary clubhouse while the permanent structure is completed late 2018.

W

ork continues on the complete renovation at Chester Ditto Golf Course that began December 2016 under the direction of Landscapes Unlimited and Arlington-based Colligan Golf Design.

The total course redesign is expected re-open next spring. The renovation includes a full re-routing of the facility, improved turf grasses for the new tees and greens complexes, new bunkers and many other updated aspects which will benefit all golfers. Colligan will also oversee the addition of a three-acre collection/retention pond, and the planting of drought tolerant species, to aid in irrigation efforts and water savings.

The putting surfaces have been replaced with Champion ultradwarf bermudagrass for a smoother, consistent putting surface due to its slow vertical growth and density. Champion was selected for the Ditto re-build due to its ability to tolerate a close cut, while also providing exceptional shade, drought, wear and cold tolerance. Champion’s recommended height of cut is lower than the lowest tolerated cut on the old Tifgreen putting surfaces. Golfers will enjoy the same type of putting surfaces as Pinehurst #2 and Trinity Forest.

The layout will stretch to 7,000 yards for low-handicap golfers and potential collegiate events, and will feature four sets of tees to ensure a great playing experience for golfers of all ability levels. An expanded driving range and practice facility will also allow for additional private instruction and group lessons for both adults and junior golfers.

Financing of the renovation came from a variety of sources including 2008 and 2014 bond funds and debt service. The course will re-open out of a temporary clubhouse, while the permanent structure is completed.

The new 18,000 square foot clubhouse is expected to open in late 2018 and will feature a full-service restaurant, bar and golf shop, 200-seat banquet facility that can be divided into two smaller spaces, covered patio, meeting room and cart storage in the basement.

Sand bunkers will be built using the Better Billy Bunker Method, which replaces the traditional cloth Geo-textile liner with a sprayed polymer. Liners, often being snagged by rakes and golf clubs, can become exposed and torn, resulting in sand contamination. Outside of the aesthetic benefit, the new bunker system will allow the sand traps to drain more efficiently and limit contamination, lowering maintenance after a major rainfall.

HARRIS ROAD PARK DEVELOPMENT STARTED Construction of new park amenities is scheduled to be complete February 2018.

onstruction has started on the Harris Road Park Development in southeast Arlington. Project construction went to bid in May; construction began in July.

Construction is planned to be complete February 2018.

The 12.1 acre property will soon feature a lighted parking lot with automated access gate, 8’ wide concrete loop hike/bike trail, benches, picnic tables, playground, bicycle rack, drinking fountain, irrigation system, park entrance sign and landscape improvements.

The park is located at 907 W. Harris Road.

EAST ARLINGTON RECREATION CENTER AND LIBRARY DESIGN BEGIN A new co-facility will replace Hugh Smith Recreation Center and the East Arlington Branch Library.

ugh Smith Recreation Center and the East Arlington Branch Library will remain open during the construction of a new facility operated through a partnership with Arlington Parks and Recreation and Arlington Libraries.

The new facility will include a recreation and gym area, indoor pool, senior center, and library. It's the first project of its type in Arlington Parks Planning Manager De'Onna Garner said.

Design of the facility will be completed in August, and construction is planned for September 2017 to February 2018. The project is funded through both the 2008 and 2014 Bond Funds.

SOUTHEAST RECREATION CENTER DESIGN BEGINS The new Southeast Recreation Center will be built in Webb Community Park.

P

lanners have begun the design phase of the new Southeast Recreation Center located at Webb Community Park.

Funding for the project is provided by the 2014 Bond Funds and will serve the southeast Arlington community.

"The new recreation center in southeast Arlington is an amenity that the community has anticipated for a very long time," Parks Planning Manager De'Onna Garner said. "We believe that the center will activate the park site with dynamic indoor and outdoor spaces that will become a welcoming beacon for the residents. The department hopes that the new development will also provide a source of identity and pride for the community."

The design process is expected to take until August 2018, and construction is planned for November 2018 to January 2019.

NEW YORK Senior Recreation Center New York has a slate of recurring activities throughout the week including exercise classes, arts and crafts and informational sessions. See the calendar on the opposite page for a complete listing of weekly events.

The senior recreation center New York has spaces ideal for all types of events including organization meetings, church services, sporting events and special occasions. Space is available to rent seven days a week depending upon schedule.

The Main Hall can be divided in three sections. Single Sections of the Hall may be rented during operating hours.

For non-operating hours, at least two sections must be rented. The full-service kitchen is equipped with cooking devices as well as refrigeration and freezers.

A 295 square foot Central Activity Room is the perfect setting for smaller groups or can serve as an additional reception area for larger main hall events.

Rental is open to both City of Arlington residents and non-residents.

The 2,400 square foot multi-purpose Main Hall seats 185 with tables, and slightly less with a dance floor. It is ideal for weddings, reunions and other private events. The windows of the room provide ambient lighting during daytime hours.

Play adult basketball during the winter, spring, summer and fall seasons. The eight-game leagues are played at Elzie Odom Athletic Center in north Arlington. League play includes Men’s Competitive and Men’s Recreational divisions.

Harold Patterson Sports Center | ASA League Eight-game leagues run in the winter, spring, summer and fall.

Games are played at Harold Patterson in south Arlington off I-20 and Bardin Road.

FLAG FOOTBALL Men’s Adult Flag Football leagues run during the spring, winter and fall seasons. Games are played at Harold Patterson Sports Complex Sunday afternoons.

Randol Mill Park | USSSA Leagues Eight-game leagues run in the winter, spring, summer and fall.

Games are played at Randol Mill Park in north Arlington off I-30 and Randol Mill Road.

VOLLEYBALL

Adult Inline Hockey Leagues for men ages 18 and up. Each season consists of eight games plus playoffs. All teams must provide their own uniforms and game equipment (H.E.C.C. Certified Helmet, Hockey Gloves, Skates and Shin Pads). Leagues will follow rules and regulations set by the City of Arlington Parks and Recreation Department and USA Hockey.

KICKBALL Play coed, adult kickball during spring, summer, fall, and winter seasons. The six-game leagues are played at Harold Patterson Sports Complex and Randol Mill Park Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday nights.

Adult volleyball offers women’s and coed leagues. Women’s leagues are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and coed leagues on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. Leagues run during the winter, spring, summer and fall seasons. Active teen league plays Thursday nights.

Your child will spend part of holiday break learning the basics of tennis or refining their skills at our 10 & Under Holiday Camps.

Children will learn quickly using scaled down equipment and courts. Our staff will help players develop basic stroke techniques, along with advancing their motor skills. Red Ball is for ages 5-8, orange ball is for children 9-10 with no tennis experience, and green ball is for players 9-10 with some experience. Arlington Tennis Center’s Friday 10-S Play Nights are designed to allow children ages 9-10 enjoy an evening of tennis games and competition with children their own age. Technique classes are an entry level for those students who have had minimal or no experience. This class will go into detail about all of the different strokes and terminology that are used in the game of tennis. The objective of this class is to get students to understand the different strokes and to be able to use them to sustain a rally with other students. Students in Champs program compete in the USTA Texas Championship or Super Championship divisions. This class prepares students to play tournaments at the Champs level and beyond. Arlington’s tradition of outstanding golf began in the 1920’s with Meadowbrook Park Golf Course. Conveniently located just east of downtown Arlington, the golf course provides an excellent choice for families and leagues.

The golf course is the centerpiece of Arlington’s first city park. Arlington purchased the 52-acre site in 1923 and it was sponsored by the Arlington Rotary Club.

The site includes picnic grounds and the tree-filled nine-hole golf course. Many of the holes feature vistas of nearby AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys.

Meadowbrook Park is the perfect facility to learn golf and sharpen short-game skills. The 9-Hole, par-33 layout consists of six par 4s, 250 to 300 yards in length, and three par 3s, approximately 150 yards in length.

The course can be easily walked or played under time constraints and has a long-standing commitment to beginning adult and junior golfers. Golf legends Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson once led golf clinics here.

Its small greens and narrow fairways are designed to challenge every level of player.

LEARN TO SWIM AT HUGH SMITH INDOOR POOL The Learn to Swim program offers customers of all ages swim lessons weekends and weeknights. Weekend classes are offered Saturdays or Sundays over a 10 week period. Weekday lessons are Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays and run for five weeks. Our Learn to Swim program includes parent/tot, preschool, adult and Red Cross certified swimming classes. We also offer private lessons for all ages. LEVEL ASSESSMENT The City of Arlington’s Learn to Swim Program follows the American Red Cross Swim and Water Safety Program. We assess each child on the first day of class to help with accurate placement of the child in the correct level. If possible, we will move the child to a level that best suits his or her skill level.

If a child is registered in the incorrect class, every effort will be made to place them into a class of an appropriate level but cannot be guaranteed.

We ask parents to help assist us by registering their child in the correct level by talking to their child’s instructor at the end of the session and/or following the guidelines below. Turn to page 75 for the 6-12 year old level assessment.

SPECIALTY INSTRUCTION WSI - WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR Through classroom learning and hands on experience, the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Course prepares you to teach people of all ages and abilities to swim and be safe in, on, and around water. Must attend all classes. Times are subject to change.

Prerequisites: 25 yard frontcrawl, fackcrawl, breaststroke, sidestroke, elementary backstroke, 15 yards butterfly, 1 minute tread and backfloat. All strokes must be performed at a Level 4 skill level. Classes are taught out of Hugh Smith Indoor Pool.

LIFEGUARD TRAINING Candidates successfully completing the class will be certified in Lifeguarding, Standard First and CPR for the Professional Rescuer.

Attendance at all classes is required.

Objectives: Recognize the characteristics of distressed swimmers, active and passive drowning victims; recognize emergencies and act promptly and appropriately; perform equipment-based rescue skills and techniques used by professional lifeguards; recognize and care for possible spinal cord injuries; learn to provide first aid and CPR. Prerequisites: Must be able to swim a total of 300 yards demonstrating freestyle and breaststroke. Must be able to swim 20 yards, submerge and retrieve a 10 lb brick, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point within 1 minute and 40 seconds.

LIFEGUARD PREPARATORY - NEW! If you want to start your lifeguard career, but need help developing the swimming skills and endurance needed to pass the lifeguard course prerequisites, then this is the class for you. Each participant will be evaluated and instructed on stroke techniques, breathing techniques and endurance training specific to passing all of the entry requirements for their class.

Goals: Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing (can use freestyle or breaststroke, no sidestroke or backstroke) Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards Surface dive, feet-first or head-first to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object Surface and swim 20 yards on back with both hands holding the object during entire return swim. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

FREE MUSIC UNDER THE STARS The Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts in Arlington presents more than 50 free outdoor concerts a year with a broad-based concert calendar of professional musical artists, from world music to jazz and home-grown Texas country to hot, indie artists. The Levitt presents original artists, many of them Grammy Award winners. The Levitt’s weekly Family Movie Nights feature movies suitable for all ages.

Last concert season, the Levitt Pavilion attracted more than 118,000 people to Downtown Arlington. The Levitt Pavilion experience is about building community as families, school groups, entire neighborhoods and people from all parts of our area join side by side in a safe, fun, casual atmosphere to enjoy live music together. he mission of Keep Arlington Beautiful (KAB), Gold Star Affiliate of Keep Texas Beautiful, is to educate and engage the Arlington community to take responsibility for improving their environment.

KAB members strongly encourage community involvement and environmental stewardship. Become part of why Arlington is the American Dream City by getting involved in volunteer efforts, attending local environmental classes, becoming a Board member and liking us on Facebook.

In 2014, the Arlington Parks and Recreation Department and Keep Arlington Beautiful logged 58 volunteer events performed by 3,900 volunteers. This year the volume of volunteer commitment has significantly increased, estimating figures to double by the end of 2015, meaning great things for the City of Arlington. Keep Arlington Beautiful is entering a challenging and exciting time, as economic pressures on our City increases, and the demand for our services continues to rise. The tradition of high quality service provision and activism related to litter abatement, beautification, and awareness to the residents of the City of Arlington is evident in KAB’s work.

The City of Arlington introduced a new program to help fight litter and beautify the City. The Mobile Litter Unit is a trailer loaded with community clean-up supplies that is available for organizations, businesses and neighborhoods to reserve free of charge to aid in beautification. Along with this program, KAB and the City of Arlington launched a pilot Adopt- a-Spot Program in July 2015, to focus on public spaces, parks, trails, and right-of–ways. Lake Arlington is a municipally owned reservoir used for municipal and industrial water supply and recreational purposes.

The reservoir is on Village Creek, and is a tributary of the West Fork Trinity River. The City of Arlington completed construction March 31, 1957. The lake covers approximately 1,939 surface acres, has a maximum depth of 51 feet and has a watershed of 143 square miles. The service spillway overflow elevation is 550 feet above mean sea level.

There are two parks located along the eastern shore,Richard Simpson Park, located at 6300 W. Arkansas Ln. and Bowman Springs Park, located at 7003 Poly Webb Rd. Richard Simpson Park has the Lake Arlington Activity Room, which can be reserved for private functions. A recreation permit is required to place, operate or keep any craft on Lake Arlington, including rowboats, canoes, kayaks, motorboats, sailboats, barges, personal watercraft and sailboards. A recreation permit is required for the paddling trail, which can be obtained in the Lake Office at Richard Simpson Park.

RENTALS INFORMATION Looking for the perfect place to have your next gathering? Then check the facilities that Arlington Parks and Recreation has to offer! We rent recreation centers, meeting rooms, gymnasiums, senior centers, park pavilions, tennis courts, swimming pools, banquet rooms, golf courses, softball fields, a skating arena, rock climbing wall, lake room and many other facilities.

PAVILION RENTALS

VENTANA GRILLE

There are 25 pavilion sites located throughout Arlington.

Park pavilions are offered in a variety of sizes to accommodate small and large groups. Pavilions can be rented for a half or full day and are available to rent seven days a week. Ventana Grille is located at Tierra Verde Golf Club and offers incredible food in a scene worth savoring. Both inside and outside seating options are available and menus can be customized to fit party needs. Call 817-548-5047 or visit ArlingtonGolf.com for more info.

BOB DUNCAN CENTER Bob Duncan Center is a 10,000 square-foot facility designed to accommodate needs of small and large events such as weddings, business meetings and more. The facility includes a main hall with stage, three spacious meeting rooms, an outdoor courtyard with patio and a fully equipped kitchen. Bob Duncan Center is available to rent seven days a week and can be reserved by room or as an entire facility. Rent items from the center to enhance your event such as tables, chairs, linens, audio visual equipment, podiums and more. FIELD RENTALS Rent a Softball Field Complex for a gathering, tournament or corporate event. Reserve your field by calling 817-459-5473.

RECREATION CENTERS We have six recreation centers located throughout Arlington that can be reserved for your party needs. Rent entire centers or individual rooms. All centers feature a kitchen with food prep area and an ice machine. Patrons can choose to provide their own food or our staff can assist with catering needs. LAKE ARLINGTON RENTALS The Lake Arlington Activity Room is the perfect place for wedding receptions, meetings and more. The climate controlled room holds up to 75 people and includes tables, chairs, restrooms and a kitchen.

The Lake Room may be rented for a full day on weekends or holidays. The room contains two large picture windows that face the lake. The room is 28 feet by 46 feet and is supplied with 65 chairs and 15 three by six foot tables. Call 817-459-5473 for reservations.
