CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS Arlington Parks and Recreation is committed to creating parks, facilities, and green spaces for you and your family to enjoy. With park fees, bonds, and other sources of income, we’re able to renovate and create facilities to fit your needs. Arlington residents unanimously approved a package of bond projects that focus on streets, parks, fire facilities and libraries in the 2014 Bond Election. Take a minute to read about projects we’ve recently completed or that are already under way. For more information about capital improvements and park planning, contact Park Planning Manager De’Onna Garner at 817-4596937 or DeOnna.Garner@ArlingtonTX.gov.

THORA HART PLAYGROUND REPLACEMENT The new playground opened early Spring. A new playground at Thora Hart Park located at 3150 W. Green Oaks Blvd. is open for play! The new playground is located next to the existing parking lot at Quail Ln. and Green Oaks.

The existing picnic tables were retained around the new playground area and two new benches were installed. In addition, drainage and landscape improvements also take place.

For more information, please contact Park Project Manager, Mitali Mandlekar at Mitali.mandlekar@arlingtontx.gov.

The playground was relocated to provide easier access from parking. The new location was also selected to take advantage of the existing shade trees and to provide better visibility from the street. The original playground area that was located within the large field has been removed. The new playground is a substantial upgrade from the existing playground. The equipment has integral shade canopies and is designed for two age groups; 2-5 years and 5-12 years and also has swings. Naturally Fun Magazine • S U M M E R 2 0 1 9

TEXAS RANGERS GOLF CLUB OPEN Course officially opened for play in early February. After a $24 million total renovation, Arlington’s Chester Ditto Golf Course is reborn the Texas Rangers Golf Club, the only Major League Baseballbranded golf course in the world. The 18-hole, 7,010-yard course is all new with rebuilt routing, designed by golf course architect and Arlington native John Colligan. With a course rating of 73.7 and a slope rating of 132, the Par 72 course is challenging. In addition to the new layout, the course includes improved turf, new water features, cart paths, new bunkering and a new fleet of GPS-enabled golf carts to help players make better club selections from anywhere on the course. One of the baseball-inspired features on the course is an ‘on-deck circle’. “In baseball, the on-deck circle is where the next batter warms up while the batter is at home plate facing the pitcher,” said Colligan. “At Texas Rangers Golf Club, the on-deck circle is a 30foot circle of artificial turf adjacent to the first tee where the next group can warm up by hitting shots at the targets within the driving range. This on-deck circle has the colours and shape of the Texas Rangers logo.” The club’s practice area has been expanded to 23 acres and includes a double-ended range, a practice hole and two short-game areas. “The first person to play all 18 holes– without the cups – has been Texas Rangers Hall of Fame catcher Ivan ‘Pudge’ Rodriguez. I asked why Pudge gets to play before me. Arlington Parks and Recreation department director Lemuel Randolph said: ‘Well he’s Pudge’. I looked him in the eye, held my stomach and said: ‘I’m pudgy too!’”

LAKE ARLINGTON EVENT CENTER OPEN Phase one improvements at Richard Simpson Park completed early February, 2019. The Lake Arlington Event Center is the perfect place for wedding receptions, birthday parties, meetings and more!

Construction was funded through the 2008 Bond Referendum and Arlington Tomorrow Foundation.

The new facility features a beautiful banquet hall, large catering kitchen, spacious patio and conference room.

Richard Simpson Park is a 9-acre city park on the shoreline of Lake Arlington. It is one of only two Arlington parks that provide public access to Lake Arlington for recreational usage.

The event center may be rented daily in four hour block or for full days including holidays. If you are interested in booking your next event please call 817-459-6231 or email angie.dennehy@arlingtontx.gov for pricing and availability. In 2015, the City Council directed staff to proceed with the design of phase one improvements to Richard Simpson Park. This project aligns with the Arlington City Council priority to Champion Great Neighborhoods. The $3.5 million project had a contract time of 426 calendar days.

The 2008 Bond Election included $1 million to replace the existing Richard Simpson Park lake activity room and office, which was constructed in 1960. This building was used for a variety of rental and recreational activities and due to its location in the 100 year floodplain, physical conditions, and accessibility challenges, options for reinvesting in the structure were very limited.

Since the park did not have an existing master plan, the project included site master planning, which included relocation of the lake activity room and office building to be elevated from the floodplain. With the park infrastructure being 30-plus years of age, the master plan also provides guidance for any future improvements as the City retires aging assets. Design for phase II will begin in 2021. Purposed improvements include; playground, pavilion, walking trail, boat storage and parking lot replacement. For more information about this project, contact Eric Seebock at Eric.Seebock@ArlingtonTX.gov.

CITY BREAKS GROUND IN SOUTHEAST ARLINGTON The City of Arlington Parks and Recreation department officially broke ground Friday, February 1, 2019 on a new recreation center to be located at Webb Community Park in Southeast Arlington. Ceremony speakers included Arlington Mayor Jeff Williams, District 3 Councilmember Roxanne Thalman and Parks Board Chair Peggy James. The groundbreaking ceremony also included City of Arlington leadership, and executives from Sundt Construction and Barker Rinker Seacat Architecture, whose firms will oversee the project. “With miles of sprawling neighborhoods, and nearly 100,000 Arlington residents calling this area home, we have needed a community gathering place for quite some time,” said Councilmember Thalman. “I’m excited to watch this recreation center as it brings neighbors together and fosters the sense of community that makes us strong as individuals and families.” “Growing up, my little brother and I went to Hugh Smith Recreation Center for all of our actives,” added Thalman. “I was in gymnastics and we did taekwondo together. Although we never became world class athletes or gymnasts, those were some of our favorite childhood memories that we still talk about to this day.” The 36,000 square foot facility is set to open in Summer 2020 and will include dynamic indoor and outdoor spaces including a gymnasium, fitness and weights area, aerobics and dance studio, classrooms, childcare, skatepark, adventure playground, outdoor aquatics feature and walking trail on the 12-acre site.

36

City of Arlington Parks and Recreation • N A T U R A L L Y F U N . O R G

“This facility is going to set a great standard here in southeast Arlington,” said Mayor Jeff Williams. “This is not only going to look great, but is going to be an incredibly well-functioning facility that provides all kinds of opportunities here. I think that all of us know too that it’s amazing the friends that are made in facilities like this. Many of my lifelong friendships here in Arlington were made in either the recreation centers or on the ballfields.” Funding for the project came from the 2014 bond program, which included a total of $60,000,000 towards parks and recreation projects. “The much-anticipated Southeast Arlington Recreation Center will reflect the ideals of a community striving to live the American dream,” said Park Board Chair Peggy James. “Equal opportunity and greater access to excellent recreation programs and events will reinforce a genuine sense of community in Southeast Arlington.” Arlington Parks and Recreation is the reigning National Gold Medal winner in Class II (population 150,001 – 400,000). Presented by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), the award honors communities throughout the United States that demonstrate excellence in long-range planning, resource management and innovative approaches to delivering superb park and recreation services with fiscally sound business practices. Residents are encouraged to visit the City’s bond tracker website for construction timelines and capital project updates.

CITY CELEBRATES START OF RECREATION CENTER & LIBRARY CONSTRUCTION The City of Arlington celebrated the start of construction Friday, March 1, 2019 for the new East Arlington Recreation Center and Library at Bob Cooke Park. This collaborative project between the Parks and Recreation and Libraries departments is the first of its kind in The American Dream City. The co-facility, located at 1817 New York Ave, will replace the existing Hugh Smith Recreation Center and the East Branch Library. Both of those locations will remain open during the construction process. The 47,249-square-foot facility is set to open in Fall 2020. Funding for the $26 million project was approved by Arlington voters in the 2014 Bond Election. The community wants to see one city and they want to be provided really good services from the city. So we’ve been collaborating over the last couple of years to determine how we are going to program effectively for the entire community, providing state-of-the-art library and parks and recreation services,” said Lemuel Randolph, Parks and Recreation Director. “We really feel like we are going to deliver on this account with this project.” To create a single building with two distinct functions, architects were inspired by the architecture and automotive designs from the 1950s and today. The intertwining of curved and angular elements, joined by a shared lobby, creates a state-of-the art facility that honors Arlington’s history while providing a modern space for present and future generations. The open concept library is expected to be a community hub for shared resources such as books, children’s toys and public computers for residents of East Arlington. The library will provide literacy tools to support students, families, and lifelong learners. Free programs include bilingual early literacy storytimes; GED, ESL and other adult education classes; and events for seniors. The recreation elements of the center include a gymnasium, indoor pool with party room, fitness center, locker rooms, group exercise room, community meeting rooms, and outdoor amenities. “We are hoping to not only promote healthy minds through the library but also healthy bodies through the parks,” said Norma Zuniga, Acting Director of the Libraries. The East Arlington Recreation Center and Library project aligns with the City Council priorities to Champion Great Neighborhoods and Support Youth and Families. Residents are encouraged to visit the City’s bond tracker website for construction timelines and capital project updates.

Arlington Golf and the Texas Rangers announced a new partnership on Jan. 12, 2018, to create the world’s only Major League Baseball-branded golf course — the Texas Rangers Golf Club — which is scheduled to open later this summer. This collaborative branding partnership, along with $24 million in course renovations, affords the opportunity for Arlington to offer a destination golf course not only for residents but for visitors to the Rangers ballpark, Texas Live! and other Entertainment District attractions. “As the world’s only MLB-themed golf course, this course is sure to be a ‘bucket list’ item for baseball fans across the globe, especially our Rangers fan right here in Arlington,” Mayor Jeff Williams said. The American Dream City’s newest golf course is located at Brown Boulevard and Collins Street in north Arlington. A new clubhouse, set to open in spring 2019, will feature a full-service restaurant and bar, pro shop, multi-purpose rental and event space, and more.

TIERRA VERDE

City of Arlington Parks and Recreation • N A T U R A L L Y F U N . O R G

It’s hard to find a more beautiful course than the award-winning Tierra Verde Golf Club. Tierra Verde is the first golf course in Texas, and the first municipal course in the world, to be certified as an Audubon Signature Sanctuary. Walk onto the first tee and enter an environment where golf and nature come together in harmony. Opened in 1998 and carved from 250 acres of secluded terrain, the course’s unsurpassed layout encompasses a variety of natural settings and offers an outstanding playing experience on every hole. The course has hosted many prestigious events, including the Byron Nelson Qualifying Tournament. Tierra Verde has been named the top golf course in the Metroplex for three years (2012-14) by AvidGolfer magazine.* Each hole has five sets of tees, sculpted fairways, strategically placed sand bunkers and water hazards - all accented by stately trees and beautiful native grasses. The facility features a state-of-the-art golf learning center, a lighted driving range, three-hole practice course and large chipping and putting green complex. Lessons and clinics are taught by PGA/LPGA professionals and apprentices, an outdoor pavilion and full-service restaurant, Ventana Grille, that complement every event from small corporate outings to large fundraising tournaments.

MEADOWBROOK PARK

GOLF COURSE 817-275-0221 1300 E. Dugan

fb.com/MeadowbrookParkGolfCourse

Arlington’s tradition of outstanding golf began in the 1920’s with Meadowbrook Park Golf Course. Conveniently located just east of downtown Arlington, the golf course provides an excellent choice for families and leagues. The golf course is the centerpiece of Arlington’s first city park. Arlington purchased the 52-acre site in 1923 and it was sponsored by the Arlington Rotary Club. The site includes picnic grounds and the tree-filled nine-hole golf course. Many of the holes feature vistas of nearby AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. Meadowbrook Park is the perfect facility to learn golf and sharpen short-game skills. The 9-Hole, par-33 layout consists of six par 4s, 250 to 300 yards in length, and three par 3s, approximately 150 yards in length. The course can be easily walked or played under time constraints and has a long-standing commitment to beginning adult and junior golfers. Golf legends Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson once led golf clinics here. Its small greens and narrow fairways are designed to challenge every level of player. The clubhouse offers a full line pro shop, concessions, and golf cart rentals. Exclusive facility rental opportunities are available for both golf and non-golf outdoor activities. With a long-standing commitment to environmental enhancement and preservation, Meadowbrook Park Golf Course is like a walk in the park for the whole family! 66

The Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts in Arlington presents more than 50 free outdoor concerts a year with a broad-based concert calendar of professional musical artists, from world music to jazz and home-grown Texas country to hot, indie artists. The Levitt presents original artists, many of them Grammy Award winners. The Levitt’s weekly Family Movie Nights feature movies suitable for all ages. Last concert season, the Levitt Pavilion attracted more than 130,000 people to Downtown Arlington. The Levitt Pavilion experience is about building community as families, school groups, entire neighborhoods and people from all parts of our area join side by side in a safe, fun, casual atmosphere to enjoy live music together. Many of these families and groups would not have the opportunity to experience the magic of live music if they had to pay ticket prices. The Levitt Pavilion gives our community an accessible gathering place for free music open to everyone – all ages, all ethnicities, all neighborhoods and all income levels. Levitt Pavilion Arlington brings music and the performing arts to Arlington in a way thousands are responding to – available for everyone to enjoy under the stars. THURSDAY 8:00 PM
