A PEEK AT THE MAN BEHIND THE LENS. N
aturally Fun Photographer Bob Brennan isn’t one to ask for much in return.
Perhaps his humble beginnings on an Iowa farm in 1938 had something to do with that. Maybe his “give more than you take” philosophy on life was developed while growing up in foster homes throughout the 40’s and 50’s. Whatever the root of his generosity and character might be, Bob Brennan has had a

tremendous, positive impact on the Arlington Parks and Recreation Department. He has been involved in photography for more than a decade in the Arlington, Texas community. He has produced work for local car shows, Arlington Today Magazine, Art on the Greene and the South Street Arts Festival, City Hall, Arlington Fire Department, AISD, just to name a few.

However, one thing differentiates Bob from many other local photographers: he’s done it all for free. “I’ve never sold a file. I’d rather just give them away,” Brennan said. “I made a deal with many of these local organizations years ago: I’d allow them to download my files and use them in any way they wished just as long as it benefited their department or the City of Arlington as a whole. With photo credit to me, that is pay enough.” If you’re wondering where this generosity and commitment to community came from, you have to understand the man behind the camera. Bob Brennan began his professional working life in Des Moines, Iowa in 1959 where he was employed in the information technology field wiring unit record machines and writing programs for mainframe computers.
HAM radio, software, I just love that stuff. I also had an interest in photography, cameras and everything, but I only got serious about it 10 or 12 years ago.“ Utilizing photography as a means of capturing meaningful moments in his life, he began photographing different environments and events around the city. From his granddaughter’s high school dances to his grandson’s baseball games and transition into the Arlington Fire Department, Bob began to develop a story board of his family’s life. With five grandchildren and 13 total family members in Arlington, there was a lot to shoot. He and wife Bonnie are married 51 years. Photography on Facebook also became a way to stay in touch with long-lost friends. Therefore, Brennan also began highlighting his own personal experiences around the City of Arlington.
After moving to southern California, where he worked in the early years of IT in the corporate motorcycle industry he also pursued an interest in motocross racing. His employment with Sanger Harris (now Macy’s) led him to move to Dallas/Fort Worth. He eventually laid permanent roots in the City of Arlington where he has now lived for the past 42 years. Bob is retired from Macy’s and Pier 1 Imports.
“I’ve been involved with nature all my life. If it’s out there and growing in nature I like to see and share it, so my adventures in the parks were perfect for me. I found out about the Southwest Nature Preserve during 2006. At the time it was just 60 acres, more or less, of undeveloped land sitting 1 mile from my house. That’s what got me involved with the parks because I started going in there and taking pictures of all the critters,” Brennan said.
“We fell in love with Arlington and never left. We made our life here but also I had a lot of fun pursuing what interested me. And, as my family would tell you, I have had a lot of hobbies, Brennan said with a grin. “I’ve always been into technology: computers,
“I knew a person whose house backs up to the south side of the large pond. He introduced me to the former parks director Pete Jamieson. I told Pete that if the department ever had a desire to develop the land, that I had some great photographs
that I’d be willing to share. I turned them over to him. I’ve photographed every square inch of that park so many times that they used a lot of the photos to help get the park renovated,” he added. After a few years, Bob’s aspirations grew. He eventually decided to set off on a personal mission to photograph every park in the City of Arlington - all 94 of them. Even after suffering a stroke in 2014, he returned to his feet and continues his journey, so far he has “pictured” 36 parks. “The parks department connects neighborhoods through parks and the city. They help bring communities together. They’re important and I want to show their beauty to people,” Brennan said. “I don’t go out to the parks and say I’m going to shoot 400 files today, I just play in Arlington and I’m happy that others can benefit from my experiences.” Bob Brennan’s photography and generosity has become an asset to the Arlington Parks and Recreation Department. His work has helped put a face to many of the department’s assets and has been used in countless park planning documents. His photography is also a main feature of the department’s park finder pages.
“The parks department connects neighborhoods through parks and the city. They help bring communities together. They’re important and I want to show their beauty to people.” — BOB BRENNAN
