“Learn to Swim” Level Assessment

The City of Arlington’s Learn to Swim Program follows the American Red Cross Swim and Water Safety Program. We assess each child on the first day of class to help with accurate placement of the child in the correct level. If possible, we will move the child to a level that best suits his or her skill level. If a child is registered in the incorrect class, every effort will be made to place them into a class of an appropriate level but cannot be guaranteed. We ask parents to help assist us with registering their child in the correct level by talking to their child’s instructor from the previous session and/or following the guidelines below.

How to decide which Preschool level to enroll a child (ages 3 to 5 years)

10 & Under Tennis 10 and Under Tennis

helps kids learn, rally and play tennis quickly in a way that is both enjoyable and rewarding. Tailoring tennis equipment and courts so they are “right-sized” for players 10 and Under makes the game more accessible and more fun by getting kids involved right from the start, a formula followed by virtually every other traditional sport.

10 and Under Tennis courts are shorter and narrower, giving the kids the confidence and ability to cover the entire court. “Right-sized” racquets and balls with lower compression are used for programs and competition. ATC’s 10 and Under Tennis programs have served over 4,000 children since January 2008, and the junior development program offered through the Arlington Tennis Association has served over 400 youth.

ATC Opened six new 10 and Under Tennis courts in November 2012! 10 and Under has been endorsed by First Lady, Michelle Obama (see usta.com). For more information contact Arlington Tennis Center at 817-459-6163 or visit 10andundertennis.com or naturallyfun.org.

Park Updates

Cody Rocamontes Memorial Skate Park

The Cody Rocamontes Memorial Skate Park is set to open at Randol Mill Park in January 2013. The new park will span over 6,500 square feet with skating and BMX challenges for beginner and intermediate users. Funding for the skate facility is through a Tony Hawk Foundation grant awarded to Cody Rocamontes, Inc., a local non-profit skate group, and the Arlington Tomorrow Foundation. It will be located in an area of the park formally occupied by outdated playground equipment. The skate park will offer a Hipped Bank, Manny Pad with Rail, Curved Taco, Dragon Tail and Flat Bar.

River Legacy Parks Playground

The playground located in the northwest corner of River Legacy Park has been completely renovated and is designed with a nature oriented theme. Slides appear to be coming out of a huge old tree and animal faces, like raccoons and owls, peer out from the tree’s hollows. A net climber is configured to look like a giant spider and a very life-like, actual sized skeleton of a T-Rex dinosaur is perfect for small climbers. One very exciting aspect of the new playground is a system of raised net tunnel structures that take the adventurous up into the lower branches of surrounding trees. The central play equipment structures were custom built for the River Legacy project and were sculpted from glass fiber reinforced concrete. The renovation project includes a new play trail along with parking lot and restroom facility modifications required to bring the project into full compliance with Texas Accessibility Standards.

Vandergriff Skate Park

Vandergriff Park was chosen as the location for a 30,000 square foot skatepark during the development of the skatepark strategy in 2011. This project involves the development of a site master plan that will guide long-range development of the facility. Phase One development will include intermediate and skilled level use as determined through a public involvement process. The skatepark design will offer plaza and street features, flow bowls and a snake 70 Funding for these improvements was approved in the 2008 run. park bond program.

Arlington Re-Leaf:

Let’s Enhance Arlington Forests!

In April of 2012 severe weather warning systems notified Arlington residents of a tornado near Lake Arlington moving south towards Highway 287. Within minutes residents suffered millions of dollars in damage to homes and property. The tornado destroyed thousands of trees adding to the growing number of dying trees still being reported from severe droughts during the last couple of years. In response to this disaster, the Parks and Recreation Department and Keep Arlington Beautiful took measures to apply for grant funding through the Lowe’s Foundation and the Arlington Tomorrow Foundation and received enough money to purchase over 1,000 trees for those in the tornado impact zone. On November 10, 2012 more than 520 community volunteers assisted Keep Arlington Beautiful and city staff in planting 1,000 trees. Local Starbucks and Krispy Kreme stores generously donated coffee, hot chocolate and donuts as volunteers arrived. After the plantings, participants joined in a tailgate party at Martin High School where they enjoyed free hot dogs and snacks.

• Special Events – From Daddy Daughter Dance to Light Up Arlington, we always need energetic individuals to assist during special events

KAB: Making an Impact in 2012

In 2012, the Arlington Parks and Recreation Department and Keep Arlington Beautiful logged 51 volunteer events performed by over 3,900 volunteers. This resulted in an astounding 46,000 volunteer hours worked and was double the total of volunteer hours accumulated in 2011. We couldn’t have done it without our community advocates and partners such as the River Legacy Foundation, Friends Groups, UTA, AISD and all the fantastic people who worked special events and programs. Thanks volunteers for helping to Keep Arlington Beautiful!
