NATURE • COMMUNITY • FAMILY • WELLNESS

Making Family Time Count

We should all spend more time with our families. We all know this. We all want to do it. But being pulled in so many directions with work and school and other priorities, it’s easy for family time to be put on the back burner. Why? Because no one is paying us to be there for our family. We don’t receive a grade based upon how good of a job we’re doing as a mother or a father. But make no mistake that while we may not receive instant rewards for making family time count, it is one of the most important things we can do to ensure the long term health of our families. Consider this scenario of one busy mom from the article, “Ten ways to make more time for your kids” by Katy Abel: “Pack lunches at dawn, dash from carpools to business meetings, apply mascara at stoplights, help with homework, race to piano lesson pickups only to return home, rush everyone off to bed, and then wake up to a go-go weekend of hockey practice, soccer games, and birthday parties.” Sound familiar? Even if you don’t live this kind of life, it’s easy to see that while this family spends time together, they’re too busy trying to make the most of their schedule rather than making a connection with each other. Abel goes on to highlight some ways to slow down and reconnect as a family: Consider these benefits listed on the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) website Healthychildren.org: Limit Kids’ Activities Limit your kids to one afterschool activity. Period. Think of it this way: Teaching kids to make choices is an essential part of our jobs as parents. All these activities build skills, giving children a sense of what they can do, but time spent with family gives them a sense of who they are. Limit Yourself We can’t “be there” for our kids when we’re not around. The rituals that build closeness -bedtime stories, cuddles in front of the fire or a favorite TV show -- can’t happen when Mom and Dad use the front door like a revolving door. Kill the TV Sitting down to watch a particular show or video can be a great way for families to relax together, but having the tube on in the background just adds another level of noise and stress. Make a “Reading Tree” I love this one. Abel suggested to find a tree in our backyard or local park and claim it as our own. Bring a book and a blanket, and make it a regular spot for story time. TGIF Fun Night Friday night, heralding the end of the work-week, is one of the best times to focus on family. While others wait in line for tables at overcrowded restaurants, grab a takeout pizza and head home or to a local park for a picnic. Afterwards, play a game of tag on the playground or scavenger hunt among the trees. Mark Fadden, NaturallyFun Author

AWARDS & ACCOLADES APRD a finalist for national honor

A

rlington Parks and Recreation was selected as a finalist for the 2014 National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management program. The award is handed out by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration (AAPRA) and the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). The Gold Medal Award honors communities throughout the United States that demonstrate excellence in long-range planning, resource management, and agency recognition. Each agency is judged on its ability to address the needs of those it serves through the collective energies of citizens, staff, and elected officials. The other three national finalists in the Class II division (populations of 150,000-400,000) were Bakersfield (CA) Recreation and Parks, Henderson (NV) Public Works, Parks and Recreation, and Plano (TX) Parks and Recreation. Henderson (NV) was the 2014 Gold Medal Award Grand Plaque Award Recipient in Class II.

APRD WINS THREE REGIONAL AWARDS

The Arlington Parks and Recreation department took home three awards at the Texas Recreation and Park Society (TRAPS) North Region conference in Grand Prairie on November 7, 2014.

Arlington Receives CAPRA Accreditation

The Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) recognizes park and recreation agencies for excellence in operation and service. The City of Arlington Parks and Recreation Department was officially accepted as a CAPRA accredited agency on Oct. 13, 2014, at the NRPA Congress in Charlotte, NC. Arlington is proud to join 10 other accredited cities from the State of Texas. The department underwent an exhaustive application process, and adhered to a strict code of standards, in order to achieve this recognition. “After a 6-month application process, three team members from CAPRA flew to Arlington to perform an analysis of our facilities and processes over the course of three days,” Assistant Director Gary Packan said. “The team conducted an on-site review of the department’s self-assessment report as well as visiting with staff and city administration.” Following the successful on-site visit, the department appeared before the CAPRA board at NRPA Congress for a successful, final evaluation. The Arlington Parks and Recreation Department joins a mere 135 parks and recreation agencies in the nation who are CAPRA accredited. This momentous achievement is due to the dedication and professionalism of the department staff that forms the backbone of our award-winning department. “It’s no surprise to us; we have a great parks system here in Arlington,” said Packan. “We are proud to serve the community in the future as a CAPRA accredited agency.”

It’s hard to find a more beautiful course than the award-winning Tierra Verde Golf Club. Tierra Verde is the first golf course in Texas and the first municipal course in the world to be certified as an Audubon Signature Sanctuary. Walk onto the first tee and enter an environment where golf and nature come together in harmony.

Named after life-long resident of Arlington Chester W. Ditto, Ditto Golf Course is located in north Arlington, just 15 minutes from the DFW airport and near the heart of Arlington’s Entertainment District, featuring the Texas Rangers, Dallas Cowboys and Six Flags.

Opened in 1998, and carved from 250 acres of secluded terrain, the course’s unsurpassed layout encompasses a variety of natural settings and offers an outstanding playing experience on every hole. The course has been host to many prestigious events, including the Byron Nelson Qualifying Tournament on multiple occasions.

As a long-standing favorite among golfers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Chester Ditto is 18-holes of challenging golf blending plush fairways narrowed by trees and accented with strategically placed sand bunkers and landing areas.

Tierra Verde has been named the top golf course in the DFW Metroplex the last three years (2012-14) by AvidGolfer magazine.* Each hole has five sets of tees, sculpted fairways, strategically placed sand bunkers and water hazards - all accented by stately trees and beautiful native grasses. The facility features a state-of-the-art golf learning center, a lighted driving range, three-hole practice course and large chipping and putting green complex. Also offered are lessons and clinics taught by PGA/LPGA professionals and apprentices, an outdoor pavilion and full-service restaurant, Ventana Grille, that complement every event from small corporate outings to large fundraising tournaments.

A driving range, practice putting green and chipping area are offered to complete one’s golfing experience. The clubhouse offers snack bar concessions and a full line pro shop with today’s most popular equipment and apparel. Chester Ditto also offers tournaments and private and group lessons taught by PGA Professionals and Apprentices.

Chester Ditto was named one of AvidGolfer’s top-5 Value Priced Courses (Under $50) in its 2014 rankings. The course is currently in the Master Planning process for significant improvements to both the golf course and clubhouse. MEADOWBROOK PARK

City of Arlington Parks and Recreation • N a t u r a l l y F u n . o r g

Arlington’s tradition of outstanding golf began in the 1920’s with Meadowbrook Park Golf Course. Conveniently located just east of downtown Arlington, the golf course provides an excellent choice for families and leagues. The golf course is the centerpiece of Arlington’s first city park. Arlington purchased the 52-acre site in 1923 and it was sponsored by the Arlington Rotary Club. The site includes picnic grounds and the tree-filled nine-hole golf course. Many of the holes feature vistas of nearby AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. In 2014, the golf course became just the second FootGolf course in DFW. Visit ArlingtonGolf.com/footgolf to learn more about the new sport. Meadowbrook Park is the perfect facility to learn the game of golf and sharpen short-game skills. The 9-Hole, par-33 layout consists of six par 4s, 250 to 300 yards in length, and three par 3s, approximately 150 yards in length. The course can be easily walked or played under time constraints and has a long-standing commitment to beginning adult and junior golfers. Golf legends Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson once led golf clinics here. Its small greens and narrow fairways are designed to challenge every level of player. The clubhouse offers a full line pro shop, concessions, and golf cart rentals. Exclusive facility rental opportunities are available for both golf and non-golf outdoor activities. With a long-standing commitment to environmental enhancement and preservation, Meadowbrook Park Golf Course is like a walk in the park for the whole family!

MEADOWBROOK PARK HOME TO SECOND DFW FOOTGOLF COURSE Arlington Golf has “kicked off” a new program at the oldest golf course in Arlington, with Meadowbrook Park Golf Course becoming the home of the City’s first FootGolf course. FootGolf is a combination of the popular sports of soccer and golf. Instead of golf clubs and golf balls, the game is played with a soccer ball and a 21-inch diameter cup. The rules mostly correlate with the rules of golf. While FootGolf is played throughout the world, it is estimated there are only 180 courses across the United States. The Meadowbrook Park course is the second course to open in DFW. The FootGolf layout utilizes the same routing as the golf course, with the FootGolf cups positioned in close proximity to the existing golf greens. FootGolf and traditional golf tee times will be offered simultaneously, with the customer notifying the Pro Shop which sport they wish to play at check-in. Both options will be available seven days a week. Due to the Arlington Senior Men’s Golf League, FootGolf tee times won’t be accepted until after 12:00 PM on Tuesdays. Golf Course Superintendent Brick Scott heard about the idea this spring and introduced it to park officials earlier this summer. “We always want to find new ways to encourage people to get outside and recreate,” said Scott. This is a great way to introduce people to golf and a new activity that the whole family can enjoy.”

The course has submitted paperwork to be certified by the Federation for International FootGolf (FIFG) and the American FootGolf League (AFGL). As a certified course, Meadowbrook Park could host local AFGL leagues, as well as state, regional and national tournaments. While most FootGolf venues are strictly par-3 courses, Meadowbrook Park has a par of 70, with a mix of shorter and longer holes. The cost for an 18-hole round of FootGolf is the same as a round of traditional golf. Prices start as low as $9.00 for adults and $7.50 for juniors. The course has rental soccer balls available for $3.00. Tee times are accepted up to a week in advance by phone or in person. To book your next round, please call the Pro Shop at 817275-0221. Hours of Operation Play begins at Meadowbrook Park Golf Course thirty minutes before daylight and ends thirty minutes before dark every day except Christmas Day. Call for Thanksgiving Day hours. Weekday tee times are accepted up to a week in advance by phone or in person. Call 817-275-0221 for further information.

Level 4 - STROKE IMPROVEMENT

The objectives of Level 4 are to develop confidence in the strokes learned thus far and to improve other aquatic skills. Participants improve their skills and increase their endurance by swimming familiar strokes (front crawl, elementary backstroke) for greater distances. Students also continue to build upon the scissors kick and dolphin kick by adding the arms for sidestroke and butterfly. The back crawl and the breaststroke are introduced in Level 4, as well as the basics of turning at a wall. Prerequisite: Participants entering this course must have a Level 3 certificate or must be able to demonstrate all the completion requirements in Level 3. Age: 6-12 Day

The objective of Level 2 is to give participants success with fundamental skills. Participants learn to float without support and to recover to a vertical position. This level marks the beginning of true locomotion skills. Participants continue to explore simultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions on the front and back to lay the foundation for future strokes.

F E AT U R E A R L I N GTO N PA R KS S P OT L I G H T :

HIGH OAK PARK The Arlington Parks and Recreation Department unveiled the new construction of High Oak Park on Nov. 15, 2014. The 12.1 acre undeveloped park site is surrounded by both multi-family and single family dwellings. The site was previously occupied by the High Oak Terrace Apartments which were constructed in 1970 and consisted of 132 units. Numerous code complaints and reports of crime were recorded in 2002 and 2003. In 2003, the property failed City and Federal inspections, and the tenants were relocated. The resulting high vacancy caused the property owners to default on their loan. The City saw an opportunity to replace substandard multi-family rental housing with single family owner-occupied housing and purchased the property in August 2004 with HUD funds. The remaining tenants were relocated and the property was demolished.

62

Also as a part of the buyout process the City purchased three adjacent properties, relocated the tenants, and demolished the structures to make room for the new dwelling units. However, in 2011, due to the decline in the housing market, the decision was made to forego new housing as previously proposed and repurpose the property as a neighborhood park. After the decision to turn the site into a park two public meetings were held to solicit input from the surrounding neighborhood regarding proposed amenities to be incorporated in a master plan for the site. Based on citizen feedback, plan improvements include a playground, hike/ bike concrete trail, pavilion, soft surface nature trail, split rail fencing, irrigated open space, wild flower areas, exercise stations, and a parking lot.

City of Arlington Parks and Recreation • N a t u r a l l y F u n . o r g

Phase I improvements currently under construction include clearing the site of all debris remaining from the demolition of several streets and the apartment complex, removing all existing utilities, installing a split rail fence along the perimeter, re-grading a large portion of the site, reestablishing turf in specific areas, and constructing a concrete hike/bike trail.
