From the Photographer: I started photography as a hobby in 2011. Originally from Canada, I moved to Texas a few years ago. Being from Canada, I missed having easy access to abundant nature, but found a little oasis of nature at River Legacy Parks.

The abundance of insect life inspired me to venture in macro photography of insects.

Ninety percent of residents surveyed in our most recent poll have visited an Arlington park and/or one of our recreation facilities in the last 12 months.

When asked to rate their overall satisfaction of Arlington athletics programs, 92% said it was as good or better than they would expect from another public program.

A greenbelt in Boulder, Colo., that helped to increase the value of surrounding homes by approximately $5.4 million was shown to potentially generate $500,000 annually in property tax revenue for the neighborhood.3

Arlington’s urban forest is estimated to have a structural value of $2.75 Billion (e.g., the cost of having to replace a tree with a similar tree). Trees in Arlington are estimated to reduce energy-related costs from residential buildings by $2.80 Million annually.5

The National Association of Home Builders found that 65 percent of home shoppers surveyed felt that parks would seriously influence them to move to a community.2

Active Living Research highlighted a Nebraska study which found that for every $1 spent on trails, there was almost $3 in savings in direct medical costs.3

Friends of the Southwest Nature Preserve member recalling her first visit to the site during the initial park planning stages.

The Southwest Nature Preserve is a 58-acre tract of previously inaccessible land, located just south of Interstate 20 and adjacent to Bowman Springs Drive in southwest Arlington.

The site include three ponds, wooded areas and a sandstone bluff, known as Kennedale Mountain. The property, a remnant of the Eastern Cross Timbers habitat, features as many as 300 native plant species. An array of mammals and birds including herons, foxes and coyotes call it home. Recent improvements include a boardwalk leading to the pond, a small amphitheater for educational programs, convenient picnic areas and lighted parking.

Fitness Belly Dancing Traditional Belly Dancing with a little bit of Bollywood, Bhangra, Salsa and more so you can groove to the moves! A fun, low-impact rhythmic aerobics cardio class that will keep you in motion, strengthen abs and core, tone, and gain flexibility in the entire body with an all- over workout. Mat Pilates Mat Pilates tones your body and improves your flexibility using the mind-body connection. Pilates works on the core muscle groups to give your body better control. Breathing techniques and body awareness are also emphasized.

Sculpting & Toning This overall body conditioning class increases strength and sculpts and tones all major muscle groups. Participants learn proper form with use of free weights, body weight and band exercises.

Senior Exercise This group exercise class for seniors includes flexibility, balance and strength training done to big band and swing music. Participants learn proper technique in use of free weights, bands and tubes.

Tai Chi Tai Chi improves balance, flexibility and strength. The class will help improve you both physically and mentally.

Yoga Yoga is a complete toning of the whole body. Yoga releases stress from the body while improving muscular endurance, increasing flexibility and reducing cholesterol.

Pickleball Pickleball was once called “the fastest growing sport in the country you’ve never heard of.” Not anymore. This very fun, very social, very ‘active’ game has grown exponentially since it was first introduced in 1965.

Developed by Washington State representative and eventual Lt. Governor, Joel Pritchard, the name of the sport originated, according to urban legend, in honor of Pritchard’s dog, Pickles, who would chase any errant balls and return them... most of the time.

Okay – so what is this fun game with the funny name?

Played with a composite/graphite paddle and a baseball-sized wiffle ball, Pickleball is very similar to tennis, but is played on a smaller court. It is not, however, paddle tennis. The court is the same size as a badminton court – 20x44 feet, or one-third the size of a tennis court – and the net, on the ground, is two inches lower than the standard 36” tennis net.

It first appealed to the over-50 tennis crowd, many of whom that loved their sport of tennis but could not run around on the much-larger tennis court anymore.

Pickleball enthusiasts agree – new participants will be “playing in 15 minutes and laughing in 20.”

We offer three hours of adult supervision for your children. Our staff is ready to help with homework, play games, eat snacks and have loads of fun! Staff will escort your children to Hugh Smith Recreation Center if they attend Rankin or Johns Elementary, and pick-up if they attend Adams Elementary. Drop-off is available. This program will follow the AISD calendar and will not be held on early dismissal days. $5 discount offered for each additional child. What made you go into martial arts? I’ve always been involved in some type of physical activity. As a former dancer, I loved the beauty of the art and was after fitness, as well as self defense. Outside influences were also persuading, as well as Bruce Lee. I started with Martial Arts enrolling in a two-week self defense program in a school not far from home. I’d always hang around after the class and watch the beginners class.

I was hooked.

I only wanted to get my first color belt. Several belts later and 6th degree black belt, I’m still kicking.

Why did you choose Hugh Smith to start a program?

I started as an assistant instructor in 1985. I taught introductory classes, then took on a class program in 1991.

Everything just seemed to fall into place.

What keeps you here? My students keep me here! They’re my number one priority, then of course the staff here at Hugh Smith.

What are your favorite parts of the job? Teaching the students. We’re actually pretty family oriented. Three of my adult assistant black belts started with their sons and/ or daughters. I love the camaraderie of the students. Their willingness to work with each other and accept each other without question.

Will the martial arts really teach my child discipline?

Martial arts is about discipline Our tenets of TaeKwonDo are courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self control and indomitable spirit. We also teach respect for the student as a person, as well as respect for others. With this, discipline will fall into place.

What will my child learn? Awareness of situations, self discipline, self respect, as well as self control.

What is the right age to start? Depends on the maturity of the student. Some students do well at 5, others might take longer. That’s why we have introductory classes, so each child receives a positive experience!

YOUTH SPORTS LEAGUE INFORMATION • All Youth Leagues include an eight-game season, league jersey (cap with baseball program), individual participant awards and sports officials.

• Teams will have a volunteer coach. If you are interested in coaching indicate this during the online registration process or call us at 817-459-6434.

• Once a team is full, any other special requests will be placed on other teams in the league.

ADULT SPORTS LEAGUES BASKETBALL

The City of Arlington offers adult basketball during the winter, spring, summer and fall seasons. The eight-game leagues are played at Elzie Odom Athletic Center in north Arlington or at Meadowbrook Park Center in central Arlington. League play includes Men’s Competitive and Men’s Recreational divisions.

FLAG FOOTBALL

The City of Arlington’s Men’s Adult Flag Football leagues are offered during the spring, winter and fall seasons. Games are played at Harold Patterson Sports Center in south Arlington on Sunday afternoons.

INLINE HOCKEY

Adult Inline Hockey Leagues for men ages 18 and up. Each season consists of eight games plus playoffs. All teams must provide their own uniforms and game equipment (H.E.C.C. Certified Helmet, Hockey Gloves, Skates and Shin Pads). Leagues will follow the rules and regulations set by the City of Arlington Parks and Recreation Department and USA Hockey.

KICKBALL

The City of Arlington offers Coed Adult Kickball during spring, summer, fall, and winter sessions. The six-game leagues are played at Harold Patterson Sports Center and Randol Mill Park on Monday, Tuesday and Friday nights.

SOFTBALL

Harold Patterson Sports Center • ASA League Located in south Arlington off I-20 and Bardin Road. Leagues are offered in the winter, spring, summer and fall each year. Leagues consist of eight games per season.

Randol Mill Park • USSSA Leagues Located in north Arlington off I-30 and Randol Mill Road. Leagues are offered in the winter, spring, summer and fall each year. Leagues consist of eight games per season.

VOLLEYBALL

Adult volleyball offers women’s and coed leagues. Women’s leagues are offered on Monday and Friday, and Coed leagues on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday nights. Leagues are offered during the winter, spring, summer and fall seasons. A Coed Rookie league is held on Tuesday nights.

YOU’RE NEVER TOO OLD TO PLAY. G

eorge Bernard Shaw once wrote, “We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.”

There is no quote which directly speaks to adult athletics than Mr. Shaw’s statement. Many of us, at a certain age, “hang up the cleats or sneakers” when we feel overwhelmed by youthful participants. In actuality we need to simply adjust the way play.

Fly balls that we once got to now drop for a single. Balls that once rattled the fence now barely hit the grass. Driving the lane in basketball is now a three point set shot when no one guards you.

The art of bowing out gracefully is a figment of the imagination.

It usually hits you right square in the hamstring. One minute you walk onto the field of play ready to go then bam you there 45 minutes ahead to start stretching. One minute you’re playing back to back basketball games for three hours and the next minute it is three hours after one game before you can leave the gym.

For every man or woman there comes that time in sports when the wind on the lake starts blowing the other way. It does not mean that the boat is not sea worthy it just means that it might be time to crank up the outboard. Point is, you don’t stop getting in the lake; you keep doing what you love to do.

Being involved in athletics is a lifelong pursuit. Remaining athletic takes on new stances for remaining active. Through the years I have seen players who grew old in age but continued to play with some modifications in how they play. Enjoying the game becomes much more prevalent than being overly successful at the game.

Some of the best teams we play host to are those that have more silver in their hair and hair left in their cap than younger, hairier players.

Some athletic events have been modified to allow for continued play for the age challenged athlete. Tennis has been adapted to include pickle ball, softball has special playing rules including adding extra outfielders and extra base runners. Even Zumba offers Zumba Gold for those in their golden years.

Instead of heading for the checker table keep heading to the locker room. Remember you don’t stop playing cause you got old, you got old cause you stopped playing. Don’t be the first to get old.

activity center Located less than two miles from AT&T Stadium and the Arlington Entertainment District, the Eunice Activity Center was renovated in 2001, adding an additional 3,400 square feet of meeting and gathering space.

The center is open weekdays, beginning at 8:30 AM on Mon-Thur and 11:00 AM on Fri. Consisting of 52 acres, the park opened in 1924 and features picnic grounds, the nine-hole Meadowbrook Park Golf Course, horseshoe pits, a Monarch butterfly waystation, basketball courts and much more.

Rooms at the Eunice Activity Center may be rented seven days a week during business hours when no center activities are scheduled, and after business hours.

The facility includes a 3,000 square foot ballroom, a variety of multi-purpose meeting rooms and a full service kitchen with stove,

Arlington’s tradition of outstanding golf began in the 1920’s with Meadowbrook Park. Conveniently located just east of downtown Arlington, the golf course provides an excellent choice for families and leagues.

Meadowbrook Park is the perfect facility to learn the game of golf and sharpen short-game skills. The 9-Hole, par-33 layout consists of six par 4s, 250 to 300 yards in length, and three par 3s, approximately 150 yards in length. Due to its shorter length, Meadowbrook is easily played when under time constraints.

Arlington Golf’s Level 2 program is designed for anyone who has either completed the beginner level and has trouble breaking 100 or has taken golf lessons in the past and wishes to become more consistent.

The main focus of the class is the full swing. This class will also cover aspects of the short game including chipping, pitching and putting.

Level 2 - Fundamental Aquatic Skills

The objective of Level 2 is to give participants success with fundamental skills. Participants learn to float without support and to recover to a vertical position. This level marks the beginning of true locomotion skills. Participants continue to explore simultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions on the front and back to lay the foundation for future strokes.

Level 3 - STROKE DEVELOPMENT

The objectives of Level 3 are for participants to learn the survival float, the elementary backstroke and to coordinate the front crawl.

They are introduced to the scissors kick and the dolphin kick and build on the fundamentals of treading water. Participants also learn rules for headfirst entries and begin to learn to enter the water headfirst from the side of the pool.

Prerequisite: Participants entering this course must have a Level 2 certificate or must be able to demonstrate all the completion requirements in Level 2.

The objectives of Level 4 are to develop confidence in the strokes learned thus far and to improve other aquatic skills. Participants improve their skills and increase their endurance by swimming familiar strokes (front crawl, elementary backstroke) for greater distances. Students also continue to build upon the scissors kick and dolphin kick by adding the arms for sidestroke and butterfly.

The back crawl and the breaststroke are introduced in Level 4, as well as the basics of turning at a wall.

Level 5 - STROKE COORDINATION

The objectives of Level 5 are to coordinate and refine strokes.

Participants refine their performance of all the strokes (front crawl, back crawl, butterfly, breaststroke, elementary backstroke and sidestroke) and increase their distances. Flip turns on the front and back are also introduced.

Water Safety Instructor

Learning Objectives: Recognize specific characteristic behaviors of distressed swimmers and active and passive drowning victims; recognize aquatic emergencies and act promptly and appropriately; perform equipment-based rescue skills and techniques used by professional lifeguards; recognize and care for possible spinal cord injuries; learn to provide first aid and CPR. Attendance at all classes is required! Times are subject to change.

Prerequisites: 25 yards Frontcrawl, Backcrawl, Breaststroke, Sidestroke, Elementary Backstroke, 15 yards Butterfly, 1 minute tread and backfloat. All strokes must be performed at Level 4 skill level. Must be at least 16 years of age and must attend all classes!

Class times are subject to change.

Candidates successfully completing the class will be certified in Lifeguarding, Standard First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer.

Prerequisites: Must be at least 15 years old to enroll in this class and able to swim a total of 300 yards demonstrating freestyle and breaststroke. Must be able to swim 20 yds., submerge and retrieve a 10 lb. brick, return to the surface, swim 20 yds. back to the starting point within 1 minute 40 seconds.

I was a Mermaid at Weekiwachee Springs, Fla. and Aquarena Springs in San Marcos, Texas. I’ve also been a Swim Instructor and Aerobics Instructor.

How long have you taught Water Aerobics? Twenty years, including almost 16 years with the City of Arlington.

What is the most rewarding part of your position? Nothing is more satisfying than seeing my students – some of whom use walkers to get around, improve their flexibility and balance through the classes and find that they experience less pain in their everyday lives.

What do you enjoy most about teaching Water Aerobics? I consider the men and women who take my class to be friends and not just my students. I organize monthly gatherings to celebrate Birthdays and other outings to try new restaurants.

When someone misses a few classes I call them and send get well cards and let them know we care. We all sign the cards.

I am a Minister and like to help.

What Water Aerobics certifications do you hold? I am a certified AEA Aquatic Fitness Professional, certified with the Arthritis Foundation, and Red Cross AED (automated external defibrillator), CPR and First Aid certified.

What influenced you to teach Water Aerobics? After so many years in water I joined a Health Club and knew I could do the Aerobics. I went and got certified. It’s perfect for my latter years.

What is your favorite Water Aerobics workout? I love them all, but ‘Water Walking,’ with many of the Arthritis movements are the most important.

The mission of Keep Arlington Beautiful, a silver star affiliate of Keep Texas Beautiful, is to educate and engage the Arlington community to take responsibility for improving their environment. Get involved by volunteering, attending local green classes, becoming a member and liking us on Facebook. In 2012, the Arlington Parks and Recreation Department and Keep Arlington Beautiful logged 51 volunteer events performed by over 3,900 volunteers. This resulted in an astounding 46,000 volunteer hours worked and was double the total of volunteer hours accumulated in 2011.

The City of Arlington has introduced a new program to help fight litter and beautify the city. The Mobile Litter Unit is a trailer loaded with community clean-up supplies that is available for organizations, businesses and neighborhoods to reserve free of charge to aid in beautification of public spaces and neighborhoods. This MLU program will assist in the strengthening of our neighborhoods, beautification of right of ways, parks spaces and promote the efforts of Keep Arlington Beautiful.

THE GUARDIAN OF VETERANS PARK. As the person responsible for Veterans Park, Frank Rivera has a lot on his plate. But one fateful day last June showed what this city employee of 28 years is truly made of.

F

rank Rivera doesn’t use the word “I” very much. As senior landscape technician and the only full-time city employee dedicated to Veterans Park, Rivera works with other city employees, contractors and volunteers to manage all 138 acres and its amenities. Working at the park for the last 14 years, Rivera, who earned a certified master gardener certification from the Texas A&M agriculture extension in Fort Worth, has become an expert on every tree and every plant that’s out there.

“It’s the diversity of the people who visit this place that makes it interesting,” said Rivera. “No two days are the same because we have so many different characters that come out here.”

He’s especially proud of the xeriscape area at the south portion of the park where he can showcase some of the things he’s learned over the years about xeriscaping, a method of landscaping that reduces or even eliminates the need for supplemental water from irrigation.

Rivera works with both individuals and groups from area organizations like the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) that come to learn how xeriscaping works.

While his shift at the park starts at 7:00 am, Rivera typically gets there around 5:00 am to survey the park and the parking lots, checking to see if any issues need his immediate attention. On the morning of June 3, 2013, Rivera saw the same truck parked in its usual spot in the main parking lot. It belongs to a professor who has jogged on a daily basis in the park for the past seven years. However, on that morning, the truck was surrounded by fire department vehicles, including an ambulance, and paramedics, who were working on the driver. Rivera soon discovered that the professor had taken a bad fall during his jog and was pretty banged up. He would need medical attention at a local hospital, where he would spend the next three days.

But besides his knowledge of plants and trees, Rivera has also become an expert on interacting with park visitors.

Wherever he goes inside the boundaries of Veterans Park, no one is a stranger. His hearty smile, followed with a quick wave, welcomes people who may be discovering the park for the first time. Patrons that have made Veterans Park their daily destination for a game of Frisbee golf or to practice the martial art of tai chi over the years will often stop and want to chat for a while.

And while the cast of characters that Rivera interacts with makes his days unique, one day in particular, which started out much like any other, ended with Rivera not only being the guardian of Veterans Park, but perhaps a guardian angel as well.

“After the first day, I came to work and saw a citation on his truck,” Rivera said of the professor’s vehicle, which remained parked illegally overnight in the Veterans Park parking lot. “I called the police department and explained the situation.

They told me that they would cancel the citation.”

But Rivera didn’t stop there. He called around to area hospitals and finally found out where the professor had been taken.

Then, on his lunch hour, Rivera visited him to check on him and to explain the situation about his vehicle.

“He told me that he lived alone and didn’t really have anyone that could help him,” said Rivera. “I told him that if he trusted me, that I would drive his truck to his house for him.”

Rivera left the hospital and went back to work where a couple that frequents Veterans Park and knew what happened asked about the professor.

“They agreed to drive the truck to the hospital and take the professor home,” said Rivera.

To Rivera, who started his career with the city at the Arlington Convention Center working indoors as a second shift supervisor and now cherishes every day that he gets to spend working outside, he wasn’t going the extra mile. He just did what he thought was right by helping one of his “cast of characters.” But for the visitors of Veterans Park, it’s a blessing to know that they have him around, their own guardian angel, watching out for them.

VANDERGRIFF SKATEPARK Vandergriff Park is home to a new 21,000 square foot community-wide skate park located in the heart of Arlington. This site was chosen back in 2011 during the development of the skatepark strategy plan.

Several public meetings were held which included two public design charrettes. This involved the public and local skaters of all ages during the design process to create their park.

The first phase which will cost approximately $1 million which will include plaza style skate areas, a flow bowl and a snake run along with multiple level terrain areas. These areas are designed for the intermediate to skilled level skaters.

The Vandergriff skate park will be a central destination point for Arlington skaters, as well as, others in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. The park is conveniently linked by our city’s linear park trail network.

The project is currently under construction and will be completed in February 2014.

The overall master plan for this skate park is scheduled to have over 40,000 square feet when fully completed. Funding for the

Nature School for children ages 3 to 5 offers a hands-on, minds-on exploration of nature through outdoor and indoor activities at River Legacy Living Science Center from September through May. Certified early childhood education teachers lead the young students through the natural world with stories, nature walks, art and song. Experience this unique preschool enrichment program during Open House on February 3. Open registration for the 2014-2015 school year begins February 17.

Summer at the Science Center in June and July provide an interactive, engaging way to learn about wildlife, ecology, the environment and science for children ages 3 to 8th grade through a variety of weeklong classes. Open registration for 2014 Summer Classes begins February 22.

River Legacy Foundation’s 25th annual Cardboard Boat Regatta is scheduled to set sail on April 26 at Six Flags Hurricane Harbor. Looking for the perfect place to have your next gathering? Then check out all the facilities that Arlington Parks and Recreation has to offer! We rent recreation centers, meeting rooms, gymnasiums, senior centers, park pavilions, tennis courts, swimming pools, banquet rooms, golf courses, softball fields, a skating arena, rock climbing wall, lake room and many other facilities!

FIELD RENTALS

We have over 25 pavilion sites conveniently located throughout Arlington. Park pavilions are offered in a variety of sizes and can accommodate both small and large groups. Pavilions can be rented for a half day or full day and are available to rent seven days a week.

Most pavilion sites include a grill, picnic tables and electricity. For more information on park pavilions, including fees and rental hours, call 817-459-5473 or visit NaturallyFun.org.

Bob Duncan Center (BDC) is a 10,000 square foot facility designed to accommodate needs of small and large events such as weddings, receptions, trade shows, business meetings, reunions, parties, music recitals and more. The facility includes a main hall with stage, three spacious meeting rooms, an outdoor courtyard / patio and a fully equipped kitchen. Bob Duncan Center is available to rent seven days a week and can be reserved by room or as an entire facility. BDC also offers many rental items to enhance your event such as tables, chairs, linens, audio visual equipment, podiums and more. LAKE ARLINGTON RENTALS

Planning an event? The Lake Arlington Activity Room is the perfect place for many events such as wedding receptions, reunions, parties, meetings and more! The climate controlled room comfortably holds up to 75 people and includes tables, chairs, restrooms and a kitchen.

The Lake Room may be rented for a full day on weekends or holidays.

Full day or half day rentals are available on weekdays. During the summer, the room is only available on Saturdays and Sundays. The room contains two large picture windows that face the lake. The room is 28 feet by 46 feet and comfortably holds approximately 7080 people. For your convenience, we supply the room with 65 chairs and 15 three by six foot tables. Reservations can be made by calling 817-459-5473.

Ventana Grille is located at Tierra Verde Golf Club and offers incredible food in a scene worth savoring. The casual dining atmosphere is complimented by sweeping views of our award winning golf course. Both inside and outside seating options are available and menus can be customized to fit your party needs. RECREATION CENTERS

We have six recreation centers located throughout Arlington that can be reserved for your party needs. Entire centers can be rented and individual rooms are offered as well. All centers feature a kitchen with food prep area and an ice machine. Patrons can choose to provide their own food or our staff can assist with catering needs.

Build A Dream Scholarship Program The Arlington Parks and Recreation Department’s Build A Dream Scholarship Program offers scholarships that can be used to register a child (four months to 16 years of age) for many Arlington Parks and Recreation Department youth programs.

Qualification for the scholarship is based upon federal income guidelines and is available to Arlington residents only.

Applications are made at the Parks and Recreation administrative office. Income verification, registration for classes and a $5 fee per family will be required at the time of application. Applicants may only apply for one scholarship per application year. Scholarship award is $65 for one child and $130 for two or more.

BUILD A DREAM SIGN-UP Application date is Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014 from 8:00 AM-5:00 PM at the Arlington Parks and Recreation Administrative Offices, located at 717 W. Main.

Please complete the entire application and manual registration form with your class selections prior to submission. Incomplete submissions cannot be processed.
