Keeping Arlington Beautiful: Council Approves Two New Projects
Keeping Arlington beautiful continues to be a focus of the City Council, as council members approved two beautification projects at the evening session on November 10, 2015. The first is a Local Project Advanced Funding Agreement with the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) in the amount of $400,000. This project includes landscape improvements for approximately 10 miles of the Pioneer Parkway / SS-303 corridor. The improvements plan also includes landscape beds at key locations utilizing native plants, drip irrigation system, decomposed granite, cobble and boulders. The City is proposing to install trees and irrigation system in all the medians currently void of trees to create a lush urban canopy within the project limits. In addition, the Parks and Recreation Department will add trees where replacements are needed. The second project approved is a contract for right of way enhancements, landscaping and beautification services in SE and NE Arlington, in the estimated amount of $140,950.
APRD Marketing team wins awards
Arlington Parks and Recreation’s marketing team won three awards from the Texas Association of Municipal Information Officers (TAMIO) at the conference in 2015. The awards were honors for Special Publications (Naturally Fun Magazine), Most Creative for Least Dollars (Eco-Man Video), and Internal Communications (Marketing Plan). Arlington Parks and Recreation’s new website NaturallyFun.org also earned the Texas Recreation & Park Society (TRAPS) 2014 Website Excellence award and also received national honors for Best Website Design by LERN.
Arlington designated a “Playful City USA” Once again, Arlington proves it really knows how to play. For the eighth straight year, national non-profit KaBOOM! has designated Arlington as one of its Playful City USA communities for its efforts to increase play opportunities for children and its outstanding dedication to play. The KaBOOM! Playful City USA program, sponsored by the Humana Foundation, honors cities, towns and communities across America that are taking bold steps to ensure that all children, especially the 16 million American kids living in poverty, have easy access to balanced and active play in their communities. Arlington is one of just two cities in Texas to have earned eight distinctions.
Arlington wins Keep Texas Beautiful award The City of Arlington and the APRD Forestry and Beautification division earned first place in Keep Texas Beautiful’s Government Award (Texas cities with population of 50,000+). The award is given to municipalities that make outstanding contributions to the Texas environment.
The City of Arlington’s Forestry and Beautification (FAB) Division works with Keep Arlington Beautiful (KAB) to achieve KAB’s mission of environmental conservation and education. Among the many contributions, in an effort to promote water conservation at City facilities and parks, the FAB Division installed native landscaping at the Parks and Recreation main office in the spring of 2013. This project included a 10,000 gallon water harvesting cistern that is estimated to collect up to 172,000 gallons of water annually. FAB has also created an educational component for schools, events, and forestry camps to discuss conservation of trees, water, prairies and wildlife. By coordinating tree planting events, FAB is currently working toward their goal to raise Arlington’s Urban Forest canopy by planting over 30,000 trees in 10 years. The initiative is part of the Tree North Texas program, the largest tree planting initiative in the nation, with a plan to plant over 3 million trees in North Texas during the next decade. Through cleanup events, FAB engages community volunteers in the removal of thousands of trash bags of waste from creeks, streams and waterways. To assist in many of these events, FAB staff also coordinates the funding for Keep Arlington Beautiful’s Mobile Litter Unit. The unit is stocked full with litter pickup tools, and is made available free of charge to Arlington residents and businesses for beautification and litter pickup.

Gymnastics is a great class for developing balance, coordination, flexibility, muscular endurance and strength. This is a beginning class where participants will learn basic gymnastic skills.
Jiu Jitsu is an ancient martial art developed by the samurai in ancient Japan. In the event that a warrior lost his sword, he could continue the fight using only bare hands. Remember the days you spent bouncing on your childhood friend’s trampoline, competing to see who could jump higher and daring each other to try cool new tricks? Now you have the chance to relive those memories — and burn some major calories while you’re at it. There’s a good reason this trend is catching on: Working out on a trampoline can improve your coordination and agility and, since it puts your neuromuscular system under slight stress, promotes stronger bones. It’s hard to find a more beautiful course than the award-winning Tierra Verde Golf Club. Tierra Verde is the first golf course in Texas and the first municipal course in the world to be certified as an Audubon Signature Sanctuary. Walk onto the first tee and enter an environment where golf and nature come together in harmony.
Named after life-long resident of Arlington Chester W. Ditto, Ditto Golf Course is located in north Arlington, just 15 minutes from the DFW airport and near the heart of Arlington’s Entertainment District, featuring the Texas Rangers, Dallas Cowboys and Six Flags.
Opened in 1998, and carved from 250 acres of secluded terrain, the course’s unsurpassed layout encompasses a variety of natural settings and offers an outstanding playing experience on every hole. The course has been host to many prestigious events, including the Byron Nelson Qualifying Tournament on multiple occasions.
As a long-standing favorite among golfers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Chester Ditto is 18-holes of challenging golf blending plush fairways narrowed by trees and accented with strategically placed sand bunkers and landing areas.
Tierra Verde has been named the top golf course in the DFW Metroplex the last three years (2012-14) by AvidGolfer magazine.* Each hole has five sets of tees, sculpted fairways, strategically placed sand bunkers and water hazards - all accented by stately trees and beautiful native grasses. The facility features a state-of-the-art golf learning center, a lighted driving range, three-hole practice course and large chipping and putting green complex. Also offered are lessons and clinics taught by PGA/LPGA professionals and apprentices, an outdoor pavilion and full-service restaurant, Ventana Grille, that complement every event from small corporate outings to large fundraising tournaments.
A driving range, practice putting green and chipping area are offered to complete one’s golfing experience. The clubhouse offers snack bar concessions and a full line pro shop with today’s most popular equipment and apparel. Chester Ditto also offers tournaments and private and group lessons taught by PGA Professionals and Apprentices.
Chester Ditto was named one of AvidGolfer’s top-5 Value Priced Courses (Under $50) in its 2014 rankings. The course is currently in the Master Planning process for significant improvements to both the golf course and clubhouse. MEADOWBROOK PARK
City of Arlington Parks and Recreation • N a t u r a l l y F u n . o r g
Arlington’s tradition of outstanding golf began in the 1920’s with Meadowbrook Park Golf Course. Conveniently located just east of downtown Arlington, the golf course provides an excellent choice for families and leagues. The golf course is the centerpiece of Arlington’s first city park. Arlington purchased the 52-acre site in 1923 and it was sponsored by the Arlington Rotary Club. The site includes picnic grounds and the tree-filled nine-hole golf course. Many of the holes feature vistas of nearby AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. Meadowbrook Park is the perfect facility to learn the game of golf and sharpen short-game skills. The 9-Hole, par-33 layout consists of six par 4s, 250 to 300 yards in length, and three par 3s, approximately 150 yards in length. The course can be easily walked or played under time constraints and has a long-standing commitment to beginning adult and junior golfers. Golf legends Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson once led golf clinics here. Its small greens and narrow fairways are designed to challenge every level of player. The clubhouse offers a full line pro shop, concessions, and golf cart rentals. Exclusive facility rental opportunities are available for both golf and non-golf outdoor activities. With a long-standing commitment to environmental enhancement and preservation, Meadowbrook Park Golf Course is like a walk in the park for the whole family!

How long have you worked for the Arlington Parks and Recreation Aquatics Division?
A: I started lifeguarding for the City of Arlington
in 2007 at Hugh Smith. In 2010, I got certified as a lifeguard instructor and started managing different shifts intermittently. In 2012, I was officially promoted to Hugh Smith’s lead guard. As a Lead Guard, I got to work closely with my bosses and really fell in love with our Aquatics division. In 2015, I had the opportunity to take on the position of Service Unit Assistant for the Aquatics Division. This winter, I will extend my reach into the world of aquatics and get my certification to be a swim lesson instructor.

A:
While Aquatics can be amazing, it can also be dangerous. I love getting to provide a safe environment at the pool for people of all ages. It’s great to see the kids enjoy the water during the summer, the seniors year round at Hugh, people of all ages and abilities gain lifesaving skills during swimming lessons, and the lifeguards grow up to be responsible young adults. It’s cool to know we provided them with their first job and I was one of their first managers.
call with the water. While she was struggling to swim, I attempted to assist her and began struggling as well. Our close call with water inspired me to submerse myself in water. I joined swim team, became a lifeguard, and started working in the industry. I absolutely love it! I have also always loved the water; it is like my second home. Keeping Arlington Beautiful: Council Approves Two New Projects
eeping Arlington beautiful continues to be a focus of the City Council, as council members approved two beautification projects at the evening session on November 10, 2015.

City of Arlington Parks and Recreation • N a t u r a l l y F u n . o r g
The second project approved is a contract for corridor landscaping and beautification services with Greycon, Inc. in the estimated amount of $140,950. In March, the city was awarded a grant of $250,000 to support the landscape effort. The landscape plan includes various styles of Texas native and drought tolerant plants with corridors focused on NE Green Oaks Blvd (North Arlington) and Sublett Rd (Southeast Arlington). As the plant material matures, the landscape design will provide an aesthetic enhancement to the corridors while screening privacy fences, utility boxes and other street infrastructure. The project will include the excavation of the current landscape and installation of new plant beds and irrigation. This contract does not include the purchase and installation of trees. Trees will be purchased through the existing city tree contract and installation will be coordinated by the Parks and Recreation Department.

LYNN CREEK LINEAR TRAIL PROJECT:
BRANTLEY HINSHAW PARK RENOVATIONS:
On November 10, 2015, City Council approved a contract with Schrickel, Rollins and Associates, Inc. of Arlington for design documents for Lynn Creek Linear Trail in the amount of $241,415. In December of 2014, the City was awarded a matching grant from TxDOT’s Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) in the amount of $1,002,877 for trail development along Lynn Creek Linear Park. The contract will provide construction documents, bidding and construction administration for a 12 foot-wide hike/bike trail along Lynn Creek Linear Park. This phase of development will link into an existing trail located at Buttercup Lane extending about 1.5 miles eastward and end at New York Avenue. The proposed trail will connect multiple densely populated neighborhoods with five public schools: Ashworth and Beckham Elementary Schools, Ousley Junior High, Seguin High School and Tarrant County Junior College. The project will also provide recreational opportunities for activities such as walking, jogging, cycling, and rollerblading. Construction is expected to begin in 2017.
On October 27, 2015, City Council approved a contract with Schrickel, Rollins and Associates, of Arlington for the design of Brantley Hinshaw Park renovations in the amount of $36,450 and is part of the 2014 Bond Election. Brantley Hinshaw Park is a neighborhood park located in east Arlington. The splash pad within the park was constructed in 1997. The existing pump/filtration system is very difficult to maintain because it is located below ground and operates inefficiently. The new design of the splash feature will upgrade the pump/filtration system to meet current standards and replace portions of the system that are no longer functioning properly. $350,000 will be available for construction of the renovation work in 2016.

Martha Walker Park is a 13-acre, heavily wooded site, located in southwest Arlington. It is surrounded by single family housing and is divided into two sections, a native stand of oak trees and a large open space. The scope of this park development includes construction of a new parking lot with gated access, looped concrete trail, playground for two age groups (2-5 years old and 5-12 years old), fitness equipment, landscaping, benches, picnic tables, park monument sign and open space.

BEAUTIFUL KeepArlingtonBeautiful.com
The mission of Keep Arlington Beautiful (KAB), Gold Star Affiliate of Keep Texas Beautiful, is to educate and engage the Arlington community to take responsibility for improving their environment. KAB members strongly encourage community involvement and environmental stewardship. Become part of why Arlington is the American Dream City by getting involved in volunteer efforts, attending local environmental classes, becoming a Board member and liking us on Facebook. In 2014, the Arlington Parks and Recreation Department and Keep Arlington Beautiful logged 58 volunteer events performed by 3,900 volunteers. This year the volume of volunteer commitment has significantly increased, estimating figures to double by the end of 2015, meaning great things for the City of Arlington. Keep Arlington Beautiful is entering a challenging and exciting time, as economic pressures on our City increases, and the demand for our services continues to rise. The tradition of high quality service provision and activism related to litter abatement, beautification, and awareness to the residents of the City of Arlington is evident in KAB’s work.

The City of Arlington introduced a new program to help fight litter and beautify the City. The Mobile Litter Unit is a trailer loaded with community clean-up supplies that is available for organizations, businesses and neighborhoods to reserve free of charge to aid in beautification. Along with this program, KAB and the City of Arlington launched a pilot Adopt- a-Spot Program in July 2015, to focus on public spaces, parks, trails, and right- of –ways. Under KAB’s plan, civic groups, schools, business, neighborhood associations and other organizations within the city limits of Arlington can apply to “adopt” an area that is convenient to them or that they use on a frequent basis that needs periodic clean-up. free music under the stars
The Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts in Arlington presents more than 50 free outdoor concerts a year with a broad-based concert calendar of professional musical artists, from world music to jazz and home-grown Texas country to hot Indie artists. The Levitt presents original artists, many of them Grammy Award winners. Our Children’s Concerts include fun, interactive shows with award-winning artists who teach young audiences gentle lessons about good manners, creativity, self-esteem and the world around them in a fun way. Last concert season, the Levitt Pavilion attracted more than 127,000 people to Downtown Arlington. The Levitt Pavilion experience is about building community as families, school groups, entire neighborhoods and people from all parts of our area join side by side in a safe, fun, casual atmosphere to enjoy live music together. Many of these families and groups would not have the opportunity to experience the magic of live music if they had to pay ticket prices. The Levitt Pavilion gives our community an accessible gathering place for free music open to everyone – all ages, all ethnicities, all neighborhoods and all income levels. Levitt Pavilion Arlington brings music and the performing arts to Arlington in a way thousands are responding to – available to everyone to enjoy under the stars.

Spotlight
DEPARTMENT SPOTLIGHT A sset M anagement team
Challenge
With 92 parks and 5,000 surface acres to maintain, Arlington needed a better way to manage its daily operations; the manual methods weren’t cutting it anymore. “In the field, team members would create their own lists for work management. If the lists became lost, the work may not get done,” explains Scott DeGrant, asset system administrator for the City of Arlington. “We were dealing with a disconnected process,” he adds. “Individuals were creating their own lists and work plans, but that information wasn’t connected or shared. So it was very difficult to make decisions across the system.”
Solution
In February 2014, the department’s Asset Management team implemented Cartegraph—creating a centralized tracking system for more than 7,000 assets. “With Cartegraph, we can communicate with our teams in real time. Anyone within our work group can see progress of our projects, make requests, and share information,” says DeGrant. That real-time flow of information is enhanced with Cartegraph for iPad. “We have more than 50 iPads in the field transmitting information to us throughout
the day,” says DeGrant. Field crews can clearly see tasks on their to-do list, mark them as complete, or find additional tasks nearby. As a result, more work is getting done. “If a supervisor sees something that needs to be done or a citizen request comes in, we can easily follow up on that,” DeGrant explains. “The biggest change is that we aren’t losing tasks that we’ve identified, so work is completed in a timely manner.”
Results
With Cartegraph, the Arlington Parks team has not only eliminated inefficiencies in their workflow; they’ve also been able to meet strategic goals they didn’t have time or capacity to address in the past. Quantifying benefits. “It took us 12 years to find this comprehensive of a solution,” says Scott Fairman, Interim Assistant Director. “Cartegraph gives us the data we need to leverage our resources. We have the ability to quantify everything we do—operations group support, for example. Nobody understood how much time or money was spent on that. We now have the power to understand the impact of these programs and resources.”
Time saved. By analyzing the amount of time spent on routine tasks, supervisors are able to make strategic choices to become more efficient. “If we spend 6 hours a week doing a particular task, we can choose to spread it across two days instead of four. We save travel time, windshield time, time spent getting in and out of the truck,” explains DeGrant. “It may seem small, but that time adds up.” Mobile work management. With Cartegraph for iPad, the Arlington Parks Department has eliminated paper work orders. Field crews now get assignments issued to them by the supervisor digitally – saving paper and time. Centralized information. With cross-device access, team members can access tasks and workflow histories from anywhere. Workers in the field have access the same information as people in the office. Analytics-powered workflows. Arlington, for the first time in its history, is in a position to deploy analytics-powered optimizations. After just one year of utilizing Cartegraph, DeGrant and Fairman hired Larry Miglets as an analyst to actively monitor and identify opportunities for efficiency gains. He will be a critical part of Arlington’s data-driven decision-making moving forward. Naturally Fun Magazine • S P R I N G 2 0 1 6
