BUILD A DREAM SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

T

he Build A Dream Scholarship Program is for children (four months to 16 years of age) to register for many Arlington Parks and Recreation Department youth programs. Qualification for the scholarship is based upon federal income guidelines and is available to Arlington residents only. Due to limited funding, scholarships will be awarded on a first come, first serve basis.

Apply at the Parks and Recreation administrative office located at 717 W. Main st. Income verification, registration for classes and $5 fee per family required at the time of application.

Scholarship awards $75 for one child and $150 for two or more.

Complete application and manual registration form with class selections prior to submission. Incomplete submissions cannot be processed. This is funded in part by the Arlington Tomorrow Foundation and the Community Development Block Grant.

The food truck craze has hit the Metroplex. We host a lunch and a dinner series at different locations in Arlington.

Levitt Pavilion is located at 100 W. Abram St. and River Legacy park is located at 703 NW Green oaks Blvd.

“The food trucks will rotate each week, giving customers a wide variety of tasty options,” Kristy Sheikh, Rental and Lake Services Manager, said.

The Arlington City Council unanimously approved a package of bond projects that focus on streets, parks, fire facilities and libraries.

MARTHA WALKER PARK CONSTRUCTION COMPLETE 7509 Sharon Lee Dr. Arlington, TX 76001

A

rlington Parks and Recreation unveiled the new construction of Martha Walker Park during a ceremony in October.

The park has new playground and fitness equipment and new hike and bike concrete trails that give patrons the opportunity to explore the wooded and open areas of the park.

It is named after Martha Walker, the city’s first female City Council Member, serving from 1972 to 1982, who is an instrumental part of the city’s success.

Walker helped found the Fielder Museum, helped plan the Fourth of July celebration in 1974 to 1976 and volunteered in various church, school and Chamber of Commerce activities.

“My wish is for children of all ages to enjoy the park,” Martha Walker said. “Thank you, Arlington.”

Martha Walker Park is located in southwest Arlington at 7509 Sharon Lee Dr. The 13-acre, heavily wooded site is now open and ready to be explored.

A special groundbreaking ceremony was held on December 17, 2015 after the project was approved by the City Council in November 2015.

This project is part of the Arlington City Council’s priority to Champion Great Neighborhoods.

MIRACLE LEAGUE FIELD RENOVATIONS COMPLETE 1901 West Randol Mill Rd. Arlington, TX 76012

C

onstruction of The Miracle Field at Randol Mill Park was completed in September allowing athletes with special needs to play softball and baseball.

The original field was replaced with a concrete subsurface and a Pebbleflex top surface that’s soft and safe for falls, but firm enough to allow for wheelchair and walker use.

The construction also included new standing seam metal roofs for shade structures. The field was designed to fit The Miracle League specifications and to be inclusive to players of all abilities.

RUSH CREEK DOG PARK CONSTRUCTION STARTED 1926 Valleywood Dr. Arlington, TX 76013

C

onstruction has begun on the Rush Creek Dog Park in west Arlington and is on schedule to be completed in Spring 2017. The seven-acre park will feature water fountains, dog wash stations, shaded seating areas and four fenced-in off-leash play areas.

This will be the City’s second dog park, the first, Tails ‘N Trails Dog Park also features off-leash areas, water fountains and other amenities. But unlike Tails ‘N Trails, Rush Creek will have an area for dog birthday parties, weddings, dog training or other canine-centric private events.

The Tails ‘N Trails dog park, located at 950 SE Green Oaks Blvd. behind the Arlington Animal Services Center, has been open since 2007. The southeast Arlington park’s usage by dog owners from across the city has been consistently high, Randolph said.

“We have seen a lot of friendships and relationships bloom through the existing dog park and we’ve had a consistent demand for this type of service throughout the city,”

“People’s affinity for dogs is pretty strong.

So many folks treat their dogs as family members, so that connection really brings about an environment where dog owners are looking for opportunities not only for their dogs to socialize but also for themselves,” Randolph said.

JULIA BURGEN PARK DEVELOPMENT (PHASE 1) 1299 S Mesquite St Arlington, TX 76010

F

eaturing a shaded playground and a concrete hike and bike trail along Johnson Creek, the long anticipated Julia Burgen Park in central Arlington is on schedule to open April 2017.

Construction of the Phase I park improvements for the 66-acre linear park will offer nearly a mile-long hike and bike trail, about two dozen parking spaces, park benches, a covered playground for ages 2-5 and 5-12, swings, a bike rack and a pavilion available for rent.

The park’s main entrance will be on Ruby Street, south of Mitchell Street.

As part of the Johnson Creek Corridor Plan, Arlington plans to eventually create a series of linked linear parks that stretch from Gateway Park near the Parks at Arlington Mall up to the Richard Greene Linear Park near AT&T Stadium and Globe Life Park. The Julia Burgen Park will help eventually close the gap between Vandergriff Park and Meadowbrook Park.

Parks along creeks and rivers benefit people, wildlife and help preserve those corridors, Mandlekar said.

The park is named for former Arlington City Council member Julia Burgen, well-known for her environmental activism.

“Julia Burgen dramatically increased the environmental awareness of the overall community and the political community – from protections we have now for trees to expanded landscaping requirements,” said Donna Darovich, Parks and Recreation Board Chair.

AWARDS AND ACCOLADES APRD FINALIST FOR NATIONAL HONOR Arlington Parks and Recreation was selected as a finalist for the 2016 National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management program. The award is handed out by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration (AAPRA) and the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA).

The Gold Medal Award honors communities throughout the United States that demonstrate excellence in long-range planning, resource management and innovative approaches to delivering superb park and recreation services with fiscally sound business practices.

The other three national finalists in the Class II division (populations of 150,000-400,000) were Cary Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources, Cary, NC Grand Prairie Park, Arts and Recreation, Grand Prairie, TX Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District, Beaverton, OR. Cary Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources, Cary, NC was the 2016 Gold Medal Award Grand Plaque Award Recipient in Class II.

Less than two miles from AT&T Stadium and the Arlington Entertainment District, the Eunice Activity Center is a resource to the community. Eunice was renovated in 2001, adding an additional 3,400 square feet of meeting and gathering space.

The senior recreation center New York has spaces ideal for all types of events including organization meetings, church services, sporting events and special occasions. Space is available to rent seven days a week depending upon schedule.

Rental is open to both City of Arlington residents and non-residents.

Play adult basketball during the winter, spring, summer and fall seasons. The eight-game leagues are played at Elzie Odom Athletic Center in north Arlington. League play includes Men’s Competitive and Men’s Recreational divisions.

Harold Patterson Sports Center • ASA League Eight-game leagues run in the winter, spring, summer and fall.

Games are played at Harold Patterson in south Arlington off I-20 and Bardin Road.

FLAG FOOTBALL Men’s Adult Flag Football leagues run during the spring, winter and fall seasons. Games are played at Harold Patterson Sports Center Sunday afternoons.

Randol Mill Park • USSSA Leagues Eight-game leagues run in the winter, spring, summer and fall.

Games are played at Randol Mill Park in north Arlington off I-30 and Randol Mill Road.

INLINE HOCKEY

VOLLEYBALL

Adult Inline Hockey Leagues for men ages 18 and up. Each season consists of eight games plus playoffs. All teams must provide their own uniforms and game equipment (H.E.C.C. Certified Helmet, Hockey Gloves, Skates and Shin Pads). Leagues will follow rules and regulations set by the City of Arlington Parks and Recreation Department and USA Hockey.

KICKBALL Play coed, adult kickball during spring, summer, fall, and winter seasons. The six-game leagues are played at Harold Patterson Sports Center and Randol Mill Park Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday nights.

Adult volleyball offers women’s and coed leagues. Women’s leagues are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and coed leagues on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. Leagues run during the winter, spring, summer and fall seasons. Active teen league plays Thursday nights.

CHESTER DITTO CLOSES FOR RENOVATIONS A total course renovation, under the direction of famed course architect John Colligan, commenced at Ditto Golf Course in mid December.

The facility is expected to remain closed until late fall 2017 for the renovation. The renovation will include a complete re-routing of the facility, improved turf grasses for the new tees and greens complexes, new bunkers and many other updated aspects which will benefit all golfers. Colligan will also oversee the expansion of the water collection/retention pond, and the planting of drought tolerant species, to aid in irrigation efforts and water savings.

The new layout will stretch to 7,000 yards for low-handicap golfers and potential collegiate events, and will feature five sets of tees to ensure a great playing experience for golfers of all ability levels. An expanded driving range and practice facility will also allow for additional private instruction and group lessons for both adults and junior golfers.

Colligan Golf Design, headquartered in Arlington, has overseen many notable course renovations including recent projects at Stevens Park Golf Course, Squaw Creek Golf Course, Brackenridge Park Golf Course, Stonebriar Country Club and Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club. Stevens Park jumped to No. 18 in Golfweek's ranking of the best municipal courses in the U.S. following Colligan's work.

A member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, Colligan has 30 years of experience in golf course design.

Promoting a philosophy which encapsulates a careful blend of playability, aesthetics, maintainability and budget; Colligan has worked successfully with private clubs, resorts and municipalities in an effort to upgrade their golf facilities in an ever competitive market place. Assisting Colligan on the renovation is Trey Kemp, who has worked with Colligan Golf Design since 2007 and is responsible for all phases of design, construction documents and construction observation.

Financing of the renovation will come from a variety of sources, including 2008 & 2014 bond funds and debt service. Final decisions on the clubhouse plans and budget are expected to be finalized in early 2017.

Arlington’s tradition of outstanding golf began in the 1920’s with Meadowbrook Park Golf Course. Conveniently located just east of downtown Arlington, the golf course provides an excellent choice for families and leagues.

The golf course is the centerpiece of Arlington’s first city park. Arlington purchased the 52-acre site in 1923 and it was sponsored by the Arlington Rotary Club.

The site includes picnic grounds and the tree-filled nine-hole golf course. Many of the holes feature vistas of nearby AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys.

Meadowbrook Park is the perfect facility to learn golf and sharpen short-game skills. The 9-Hole, par-33 layout consists of six par 4s, 250 to 300 yards in length, and three par 3s, approximately 150 yards in length.

The course can be easily walked or played under time constraints and has a long-standing commitment to beginning adult and junior golfers. Golf legends Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson once led golf clinics here.

LEARN TO SWIM AT HUGH SMITH INDOOR POOL

The Learn to Swim program offers customers of all ages swim lessons on weekends and weeknights. Weekend classes are offered Saturdays or Sundays over a nine week period. Weekday lessons are Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays and run for five weeks. The mission of Keep Arlington Beautiful (KAB), Gold Star Affiliate of Keep Texas Beautiful, is to educate and engage the Arlington community to take responsibility for improving their environment. KAB members strongly encourage community involvement and environmental stewardship. Become part of why Arlington is the American Dream City by getting involved in volunteer efforts, attending local environmental classes, becoming a Board member and liking us on Facebook.

In 2014, the Arlington Parks and Recreation Department and Keep Arlington Beautiful logged 58 volunteer events performed by 3,900 volunteers. This year the volume of volunteer commitment has significantly increased, estimating figures to double by the end of 2015, meaning great things for the City of Arlington. Keep Arlington Beautiful is entering a challenging and exciting time, as economic pressures on our City increases, and the demand for our services continues to rise. The tradition of high quality service provision and activism related to litter abatement, beautification, and awareness to the residents of the City of Arlington is evident in KAB’s work.

The City of Arlington introduced a new program to help fight litter and beautify the City. The Mobile Litter Unit is a trailer loaded with community clean-up supplies that is available for organizations, businesses and neighborhoods to reserve free of charge to aid in beautification. Along with this program, KAB and the City of Arlington launched a pilot Adopt- a-Spot Program in July 2015, to focus on public spaces, parks, trails, and right-of–ways. Free music under the stars The Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts in Arlington presents more than 50 free outdoor concerts a year with a broad-based concert calendar of professional musical artists, from world music to jazz and home-grown Texas country to hot, indie artists. The Levitt presents original artists, many of them Grammy Award winners. The Levitt’s morning Children’s Concerts include fun, interactive shows and weekly Family Movie Nights feature movies suitable for all ages.

Last concert season, the Levitt Pavilion attracted more than 115,000 people to Downtown Arlington. The Levitt Pavilion experience is about building community as families, school groups, entire neighborhoods and people from all parts of our area join side by side in a safe, fun, casual atmosphere to enjoy live music together. Any Arlington junior or high school student can apply to be a Mayor’s Youth Commission member. Mayor’s Youth Commission looks for eager students who can attend at least eight meetings per year and complete the required volunteer hours.

The youth leaders plan, organize and lead all monthly meetings. They also present to City Council and the Mayor annually, and attend one to two council meeting per year. Meetings are the first Thursday of every month. Mayor’s Youth Commission members hose a minimum of two volunteer service projects per year related to an annual theme plus fun social events.

Lake Arlington is a municipally owned reservoir used for municipal and industrial water supply and recreational purposes. The reservoir is on Village Creek, and is a tributary of the West Fork Trinity River. The lake is located in Tarrant County at the western edge of Arlington. The City of Arlington completed construction March 31, 1957. The lake covers approximately 1,939 surface acres, has a maximum depth of 51 feet and has a watershed of 143 square miles.

The service spillway overflow elevation is 550 feet above mean sea level.

There are two parks located along the eastern shore,Richard Simpson Park, located at 6300 W. Arkansas Ln. and Bowman Springs Park, located at 7003 Poly Webb Rd. Special attractions at these parks include boat launches, picnic areas, grills and restrooms. Pavilions are available for rent at both parks. Richard Simpson Park also has the Lake Arlington Activity Room, which can be reserved for private functions. A recreation permit is required to place, operate or keep any boat or other craft on Lake Arlington, including rowboats, canoes, kayaks, motorboats, sailboats, barges, personal watercraft and sailboards. A recreation permit is required for the paddling trail, which can be obtained in the Lake Office at Richard Simpson Park.

FISHING

Fish varieties at Lake Arlington include Black Bass, Sand Bass, Hybrid Stripers, Catfish and Crappie. The state laws of Texas govern the taking of fish from Lake Arlington.

RENTALS INFORMATION Looking for the perfect place to have your next gathering? Then check the facilities that Arlington Parks and Recreation has to offer! We rent recreation centers, meeting rooms, gymnasiums, senior centers, park pavilions, tennis courts, swimming pools, banquet rooms, golf courses, softball fields, a skating arena, rock climbing wall, lake room and many other facilities.

PAVILION RENTALS

There are 25 pavilion sites located throughout Arlington.

Park pavilions are offered in a variety of sizes to accommodate small and large groups. Pavilions can be rented for a half or full day and are available to rent seven days a week.Most pavilion sites include a grill, picnic tables and electricity. BOB DUNCAN CENTER

Bob Duncan Center is a 10,000 square-foot facility designed to accommodate needs of small and large events such as weddings, business meetings and more. The facility includes a main hall with stage, three spacious meeting rooms, an outdoor courtyard with patio and a fully equipped kitchen. Bob Duncan Center is available to rent seven days a week and can be reserved by room or as an entire facility. LAKE ARLINGTON RENTALS

The Lake Arlington Activity Room is the perfect place for wedding receptions, meetings and more. The climate controlled room holds up to 75 people and includes tables, chairs, restrooms and a kitchen. The Lake Room may be rented for a full day on weekends or holidays. The room contains two large picture windows that face the lake. The room is 28 feet by 46 feet and is supplied with 65 chairs and 15 three by six foot tables. Call 817-459-5473 for reservations.

VENTANA GRILLE
