and events that have happened in Arlington through sculptures, it's an exciting opportunity for our parks to become more engaging for our residents."
The sculpture was installed in January and is a centerpiece of Arlington's Entertainment District Sculpture Trail in Richard Greene and Robert Cluck linear parks.
Morrel's Unity Arch was selected out of 21 proposals as the best representation of the community spirit supporting Arlington's growing Entertainment District.
"The Unity Arch is reflective of how Arlington is aligning to create growth and opportunity by uniting through our diversity, education, aspirations and spirit, and it reflects the 'can-do' spirit of our city," said Ronnie Price, president of the Arlington Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Morrel said he came up with the design by wrapping a piece of chicken wire around a football.
Mayor Jeff Williams, Park Board Chair Donna Darovich, Rob Matwick, Executive Vice President of Business Operations for the Texas Rangers, and the Artist, Owen Morrell, all spoke at the event. "Art is an important piece of any community," Assistant Parks Director Gary Packan said. "If we can continue to work to expand that within our park system to celebrate people 6

Spanning the length of both the Richard Greene and Robert Cluck linear parks, the sculpture trail combines art and nature. It's set against the beautiful backdrop of Globe Life Park and AT&T Stadium. Another phase of the master plan was completed May 2016 which included nine pieces of art located on the trail between Randol Mill Road and Cowboys Way, on the east side of Johnson Creek. This phase was underwritten by the Arlington Tomorrow Foundation.

His work was selected out of 21 proposals as the centerpiece for the Sculpture Trail Top Right: City officials and other representatives cut the ceremonial ribbon at the dedication on April 6. Bottom: Morrell discusses his work with City Manager Trey Yelveryon.
Unlike the permanent Unity Arch, each of the nine sculptures along the trail will remain on display for three years and then it will be rotated out. This will provide park patrons with a new experience every few years. If a sculpture is sold while on display, the city will collect a percentage of the commission and the artist will install a replacement piece.

BOB FINDLAY LINEAR PARK IMPROVEMENTS
The park's trail will remain closed until construction is completed in July.
C
onstruction work continues on Bob Findlay Linear Park Trail, located at 900 Findlay Drive, 76012. The trail will remain closed during construction through July. The project involves replacing approximately 0.8 mile of antiquated trail. The existing hike and bike trail is heavily used and has been in place for over 20 years. The new concrete trail will be 12' wide, allowing more people use the trail at one time. This much needed trail improvement will also be slightly realigned enhancing the overall quality of the trail and park goers experience. The $524,157 project is funded by the 2014 Bond Program fund. For questions, contact Park Project Manager, Mitali Mandlekar at Mitali.mandlekar@arlingtontx.gov.

JULIA BURGEN PARK DEVELOPMENT Flood-prone land purchased in 1999 was turned into a 66-acre linear park designed to mimic nature.
J
ulia Burgen Park is open for use after construction completed as scheduled in April.
Globe Life Park. The Julia Burgen Park will help eventually close the gap between Vandergriff Park and Meadowbrook Park.
Construction included new a new trail system, playground equipment, pavilion, lighted parking lot, automated gate access, and more.
"Trails are our highest requested amenity in our park system," Assistant Parks Director Gary Packan said.
“The park offers several uniquely designed features that can be especially experienced at the playground area,” Park Project Manager Mitali Mandlekar said. Mandlekar took inspiration from nearby Johnson Creek and incorporated creek bridge and river wave elements into the playground. The project restored some natural areas and wildlife habitats along the creek. Developers also included drought-tolerant species, native-grasses and wildflowers in several areas. "With so much technology available to children, this element of experiencing and connecting with nature is so important," Mandlekar said. "It's amazing to grow up on a street where you can say ‘I have this beautiful park,' where you can build memories, not just with your family but with your friends." In 1999, the City used federal funding to purchase and tear down more than 100 flood-prone homes along Johnson Creek. The previously empty streets and crumbling sidewalks are not home to the new 66-acre linear park. Funding for the park development was included in the 2008 Bond Program. As part of the Johnson Creek Corridor Plan, Arlington plans to eventually create a series of linked linear parks that stretch from Gateway Park near the Parks at Arlington Mall up to the Richard Greene Linear Park near AT&T Stadium and

As part of its priority to Champion Great Neighborhoods, the Arlington City Council supports projects such as linear parks that are designed to improve the quality of life for residents. The park is named after former City Council member Julia Burgen, well-known for her environmental activism. "Julia Burgen dramatically increased the environmental awareness of the overall community and the political community – from protections we have now for trees to expanded landscaping requirements," said Donna Darovich, parks and recreation board chair. The park is located between Pecan Street and Collins Street, east of the University of Texas at Arlington. Center Street runs through the park, which is located south of downtown Arlington. The main entrance is on Ruby Street, south of Mitchell Street. For more information about this and other capital improvement projects, contact Park Project Manager Mitali Mandlekar at Mitali.Mandlekar@Arlingtontx.gov.

RUSH CREEK DOG PARK CONSTRUCTION
The City's second dog park will remain closed until September to allow grass to grow-in and root properly.
R
ush Creek Dog Park is scheduled to open September 2017 off West Pioneer Pkwy in Arlington. Construction is on track to be completed in May, but will open later in the year. The grass needs several months to create strong roots and be able to withstand dog use. “If we allow dogs on the turf before it is allowed to properly grow in and establish an adequate root system, the turf will be torn up very quickly leaving muddy areas,” De’onna Garner, Park Planning Manager, said. The seven-acre park will feature water fountains, benches, climbing boulders, shaded seating areas and four fenced-in paddocks for off-leash play.

City of Arlington Parks and Recreation • N A T U R A L LY F U N . O R G
The project will also include designated areas for both large and small dogs, security lighting and a parking lot with at least 60 spaces. When complete, Rush Creek Dog Park will be the City’s second public dog park. Tails ‘N Trails dog park, located at 950 SE Green Oaks Blvd, has been open since 2007. "Usage of the first park has been consistently high," Parks and Recreation Director Lemuel Randolph said.
Construction Complete: May 2017 Park Opening: September 9, 2017
EDEN ROAD PARK DEVELOPMENT Construction will be completed by June 16, 2017. The Park is located at 1860 Mansfield Webb Rd.
E
den Road Park construction is on schedule to be completed by June 16, 2017 Park Project Manager Eric Seebock said. Work began on January 17, 2017 with a contract of $930,800 with 2L Construction, LLC. The park will be renamed as the main entrance is no longer on Eden Road. Parks officials have reached out to nearby neighborhoods for suggestions.
The project is funded by Park Development Fees, and will feature a 20 space concrete parking lot, a group picnic pavilion with grill, playground, and picnic tables. Construction also includes new benches, loop walking trail, open play areas, wildflower meadow areas, park monument sign, automated security gate, landscaping, and irrigation.

GET TO KNOW THE PRO Arlington Tennis Center recently welcomed James Helvey as its Head Tennis Professional in February. Helvey was the Men's & Women's Tennis Coach at Cameron University prior to joining the Arlington Tennis Center staff.
Q: How long have you been playing Tennis? A: I started playing tennis at the end of my 3rd grade year
of school…. I was nine years old.. so I can say I have been playing for 40 years!
Q: What's your Tennis Background? A: I played competitively in college, I have coached nationally
ranked NCAA teams and have helped players make the next step beyond the college level, and have strung rackets for the pros.
Q: Where were you an instructor before this? A: Before coming to Arlington Tennis Center I was the Men’s & Women’s Tennis Coach at Cameron University.
Q: Why did you choose Arlington Tennis Center? A: I originally grew up in the Ft. Worth area and I always
wanted to get back to my home town. I coached in college for 27 years and accomplished most of all my goals by winning 5 conference titles, 8 NCAA regional titles, 8 trips to the NCAA sweet 16 and 2 appearances in the Elite 8. When I heard the position came open at ATC I jumped at it. It’s a fabulous facility with wonderful people and it gave me the opportunity to get back near my home.
Q: What are your favorite parts of the job? A: My most favorite part of the job is being out on the court and helping someone learn something new with tennis. I like working with people of all ages and all levels. To see someone smile the first time when they learn a particular stroke or a serve is really satisfying especially when you know that you’re the one who helped them.

MEADOWBROOK PARK
City of Arlington Parks and Recreation • N A T U R A L LY F U N . O R G
Arlington’s tradition of outstanding golf began in the 1920’s with Meadowbrook Park Golf Course. Conveniently located just east of downtown Arlington, the golf course provides an excellent choice for families and leagues. The golf course is the centerpiece of Arlington’s first city park. Arlington purchased the 52-acre site in 1923 and it was sponsored by the Arlington Rotary Club. The site includes picnic grounds and the tree-filled nine-hole golf course. Many of the holes feature vistas of nearby AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. Meadowbrook Park is the perfect facility to learn golf and sharpen short-game skills. The 9-Hole, par-33 layout consists of six par 4s, 250 to 300 yards in length, and three par 3s, approximately 150 yards in length. The course can be easily walked or played under time constraints and has a long-standing commitment to beginning adult and junior golfers. Golf legends Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson once led golf clinics here. Its small greens and narrow fairways are designed to challenge every level of player. The clubhouse offers a full line pro shop, concessions, and golf cart rentals. Exclusive facility rental opportunities are available for both golf and non-golf outdoor activities. With a long-standing commitment to environmental enhancement and preservation, Meadowbrook Park Golf Course is like a walk in the park for the whole family!

It’s hard to find a more beautiful course than the award-winning Tierra Verde Golf Club. Tierra Verde is the first golf course in Texas, and the first municipal course in the world, to be certified as an Audubon Signature Sanctuary. Walk onto the first tee and enter an environment where golf and nature come together in harmony. Opened in 1998 and carved from 250 acres of secluded terrain, the course’s unsurpassed layout encompasses a variety of natural settings and offers an outstanding playing experience on every hole. The course has hosted many prestigious events, including the Byron Nelson Qualifying Tournament. Tierra Verde has been named the top golf course in the Metroplex for three years (2012-14) by AvidGolfer magazine.* Each hole has five sets of tees, sculpted fairways, strategically placed sand bunkers and water hazards - all accented by stately trees and beautiful native grasses. The facility features a state-of-the-art golf learning center, a lighted driving range, three-hole practice course and large chipping and putting green complex. Lessons and clinics are taught by PGA/LPGA professionals and apprentices, an outdoor pavilion and full-service restaurant, Ventana Grille, that complement every event from small corporate outings to large fundraising tournaments.
Trade the typical parking lot views of other restaurants for Ventana Grille and the sights and sounds of Tierra Verde Golf Club — the first Audubon Signature Sanctuary golf course in Texas — where golf, dining and nature come together. Open to the public daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and offering a takeout menu, Ventana Grille’s affordable options under $10 makes it the perfect place for your next meal. Ideally located less than three miles from I-20 off US 287, Ventana Grille is an excellent place to grab a bite to eat and enjoy a couple of drinks after your round of golf. It’s a quick casual lunch spot for you and your co-workers, and the ideal setting to celebrate your next special event. The kitchen is open daily from 6:30 AM to 9 PM and features Avid Golfer’s ‘Best Breakfast Burrito’ and daily lunch specials ranging from $7.95 to $9.95. Be sure to visit ArlingtonGolf.com to see a list of upcoming events at Ventana Grille. Whether you are attending one of our special holiday functions, Ticket to Travel dinners or are just enjoying a meal away from home, Ventana Grille promises to be a delight to the taste buds. Catering, wedding receptions, private parties, to-go orders and special requests are welcome. Take the stress off and let us handle the details for your upcoming event. LEVEL ASSESSMENT The City of Arlington’s Learn to Swim Program follows the American Red Cross Swim and Water Safety Program. We assess each child on the first day of class to help with accurate placement of the child in the correct level. If possible, we will move the child to a level that best suits his or her skill level. If a child is registered in the incorrect class, every effort will be made to place them into a class of an appropriate level but cannot be guaranteed. We ask parents to help assist us by registering their child in the correct level by talking to their child’s instructor at the end of the session and/or following the guidelines below. Turn to page 75 for the 6-12 year old level assessment.

SWIM SAFE CAMPAIGN MAR. 29 - SEPT. 6
How would you feel if you saw someone, perhaps a child, drowning first hand and there was nothing you could do to save them? What do you think that experience would do to you? How would it affect your relationship with the water and pool safety? Unfortunately many of us are not prepared for a situation like this. However, Arlington Aquatics is helping prepare the public this summer with their #SwimSafe campaign. Be on the lookout for #WaterSafetyWednesday all Summer long on Facebook as they share tips and tricks to stay safe in and around the water!

KEEP ARLINGTON
BEAUTIFUL KeepArlingtonBeautiful.com
The mission of Keep Arlington Beautiful (KAB), Gold Star Affiliate of Keep Texas Beautiful, is to educate and engage the Arlington community to take responsibility for improving their environment. KAB members strongly encourage community involvement and environmental stewardship. Become part of why Arlington is the American Dream City by getting involved in volunteer efforts, attending local environmental classes, becoming a Board member and liking us on Facebook. In 2014, the Arlington Parks and Recreation Department and Keep Arlington Beautiful logged 58 volunteer events performed by 3,900 volunteers. This year the volume of volunteer commitment has significantly increased, estimating figures to double by the end of 2015, meaning great things for the City of Arlington. Keep Arlington Beautiful is entering a challenging and exciting time, as economic pressures on our City increases, and the demand for our services continues to rise. The tradition of high quality service provision and activism related to litter abatement, beautification, and awareness to the residents of the City of Arlington is evident in KAB’s work.
Keep Arlington Beautiful
neighborhood associations and other organizations within the city limits of Arlington can apply to “adopt” an area that is convenient to them or that they use on a frequent basis that needs periodic clean-up. As the program gains momentum, KAB encourages community members to take action and join in the mission to Keep Arlington Beautiful. For more information on our volunteer opportunities, please visit our web page, the volunteer tab of our Facebook page or email KAB@arlingtontx.gov! To reserve the Mobile Litter Unit for your next community clean up, or to learn more about Adopt-a-Spot, email KAB@arlingtontx.gov or call 817-459-5477
The City of Arlington introduced a new program to help fight litter and beautify the City. The Mobile Litter Unit is a trailer loaded with community clean-up supplies that is available for organizations, businesses and neighborhoods to reserve free of charge to aid in beautification. Along with this program, KAB and the City of Arlington launched a pilot Adopt- a-Spot Program in July 2015, to focus on public spaces, parks, trails, and right-of–ways.
