PUBLISHER'SLETTER Why are we so afraid to ask for what we want in life? For most of us, it’s the fear of rejection. We hate to hear the word “no” and we take it so personally. I believe part of the reason is because as children we hear the word no so often; it becomes ingrained in our soul as painful and something to be avoided at all cost. But what does it really mean when someone tells us no? All it really means is that we’re still in the same place as when we started – not better off, but not worse off either. So that means that we have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Asking for something that we want can sometimes be seen as taking a risk. And in order to be successful, we know that we have to take risks. It truly scares me to think of all the outcomes that could have happened and all of the things I could have had, but I was too afraid to ask. When you start to contemplate this, it will become more painful NOT to ask for what you want, than it is to take the risk of asking. Speaking of asking for what we want…I have a great example to share with you. As many of you read in our February issue, my long-term partner and graphic designer recently left the magazine. The months prior to his leaving, I put out to the Universe that I needed someone with similar skills and creativity to take his place. Within a month, I met Ashley Frament! Ashley is originally from the Capitol Region of New York State, where she grew up and earned a BFA in Graphic Design from The College of Saint Rose in Albany. After living in NYC for 4 fun-filled years, she moved to the New Haven area and established her own graphic design business, specializing in marketing and printed materials for small businesses. When she’s not designing Ashley loves to cook, bake, and sample all the craft beers she can find. We are thrilled to have her on board with Natural Nutmeg! In health and happiness,

THE BUZZ Share Lu Jong Tibetan Healing Yoga by Becoming a Teacher this June

T

his year, the Lu Jong Tibetan Yoga Teacher Training is being held in upstate NY. The program aims to build a community of teachers that can effectively share Lu Jong. It is offered by Nangten Menlang Buddhist Medical Center and Farrah Garan of Tibetan Healing Movement. Lu Jong is a series of movements rooted in Tibetan Medicine and Buddhism. It is a practical and accessible method for boosting health, balancing body systems and cultivating mental stability. Tulku Lobsang is the pioneer of this ancient practice in the West, having developed this systematic approach to releasing blockages and balancing body and mind. The program includes a 12-day education (June 12 – 20, August 1 – 5) taught by Farrah Garan, and certification with Tulku Lobsang (October 20 – 22). Upon completion of this training, you will be able to confidently teach the 23 movements, modify them based on individual needs, and explain their benefits from the view of Tibetan Medicine and Tantrayana Buddhism. Most importantly, you will be able to offer your community something that will bring great benefit. People of all backgrounds, ages and body types are very welcome. No experience with yoga or Buddhism needed. We simply ask you to be committed to your own health and happiness, and that you want the same for others. The beauty of Lu Jong is its accessibility and effectiveness for bringing all kinds of people into balance. There is increasing interest in Lu Jong and loving, compassionate individuals are needed to help share it! Visit www.lujong.org or contact farrah@tibetanhealingmovement. com for more details. Nutmeg “Nuggets” Mindfulness Is This

R

ecently in Iowa I was visiting my 2.5 year old Grandson Jaxon Pierce. On one of those bitter cold winter days I bundled him up as we headed out the door for a neighborhood walk, he in the stroller, me pushing him from behind. We couldn’t help but notice the crisp bright blue sky brilliantly before us. Despite the frigid cold we noticed that even the birds were singing. I thought to myself “don’t birds migrate south anymore where the weather is warm and comfortable?” The gorgeous still of this beautiful Eagle was perched on a tree just outside Jaxon’s bedroom window. I am so thankful their neighbor and family friend stopped to capture the wonder and beauty in that moment for it surely would have been missed if she had not been mindful to pause and notice. There is magic all around us every single day if we choose to live in the present moment. All we need to do is pause, look around, and be aware of the simple gifts that are on this earth for our enjoyment and pleasure. When we choose this, mindfulness will not only bring us true peace but sheer JOY. Anita Barbero is a Wellness Specialist employed at ESPN’s Wellness Department and owner of Renew Your Health LLC. What is Trichotillomania Alopecia?

T

richotillomania Alopecia is recognized when a person has an irresistible urge to pull hair, most commonly from the scalp and eyebrows, but also many other areas of the body. Trichotillomania usually develops just before or during the early teens — most often between the ages of 11 and 13 — and is often a lifelong problem. Infants also can be prone to hair pulling, but this is usually mild and goes away on its own without treatment. There are various signs and indicators to look for when determining if trichotillomania is a problem for you or someone you love. Some of which includes: • Repeatedly pulling out one’s hair resulting in hair loss • Hair pulling that causes problems in social, occupational or other areas of functioning • Feeling an uncomfortable sensation that must be relieved by hair pulling • In more extreme advance cases, one may even ingest their own hair which can create other serious health issues including digestive disorders Trichotillomania is recognized as a severe psychological disorder and must not be overlooked as just a “nervous” condition or bad habit. Specific two-part treatment is suggested. First and foremost, care of a psychologist or treatment practitioner helps address any psychological imbalances. Second, it is equally important in making sure the client cannot do more damage and pull more hairs. Therefore, it is a good idea to also receive hair replacement services with a trichologist or hair replacement specialist. One receiving proper treatment can manage desires or urges to pull and successfully regrow hair. Mention Natural Nutmeg and receive a free 30 minute consultation. Call for your consultation today! Submitted by Donyelle McBride, Trichologist. US Trichology Institute Board Member. For more information, visit www.mcbridehair.com or call 860-985-2081.

Is Stress Due to Your Mindset?

I

don’t know about you, but at least once a day I hear someone— and yes, some days that someone is me—say “I’m so stressed out!” or “I can’t handle this stress anymore.” It’s become such a common phrase that we don’t know exactly what it means; all we know is that it’s bad and we hate feeling it. Webster defines stress as “…a state of mental tension and worry caused by problems in your life, work, etc.” Stress is Not External I’m going to disagree and take a self-empowered approach to stress, because if stress is something that’s due to problems outside of us, that we have absolutely no control over, we’re powerless. Not to mention the fact that, a lot of the time, there’s nothing going on externally and yet we still feel stressed, worried or anxious. So stress is not created by or dependent on external circumstances; it is due to a mindset or belief that’s inside of us. We have little to no control over external events; we do, however, have control over what we choose to think, believe and perceive, and we have the power to create change and experience external events differently. Taking responsibility for our stress vs. blaming it on someone or something else is where our power to feel better resides. “I’m Not Enough” Let’s talk about some stress-inducing thought patterns or beliefs. A classic is “I’m not _______ enough to handle what’s going on in life, work, etc.” You fill in your blank: “I’m not smart, strong, good, capable, thin, pretty, rich enough, etc.” It’s invariably some form of lack and it’s that belief in our lack that causes the stress, which is just another word for fear. We are afraid that we are not enough to handle the challenge that life is presenting us. We also tend to think of challenges as something bad, oftentimes going as far as thinking they’re some form of punishment for previous errors. Make Challenges a Blessing What if challenges are presented to hone our mettle and make us stronger? What if they’re there to show us how strong, resourceful, resilient, patient, creative, forgiving or loving we are? What if their sole purpose is to help us grow and evolve? If we could flip our perspective, realizing that challenges are a blessing, not a curse, we’d welcome them instead of dreading them. If we took that a step further and held the mindset, “I am _________ enough to handle what’s going on in my life, work, etc.,” there would be no such thing as stress or fear; they’d be replaced by a willingness to embrace the gift that the current challenge brings. 10

Natural Nutmeg - April 2015

Easier Than You Think! You’re probably thinking, “Easier said than done.” And I say, “Easier done than you think.” You have been selling yourself short. Most of us do because we’ve fallen into the trap of believing the projections of other people’s insecurities, and it’s become a vicious cycle. Every time anyone expressed doubt in you, they were really expressing doubt in themselves—you just took it personally. Wouldn’t you feel differently if you knew that what people say is just a reflection of how they think and feel about themselves? How insightful would that be? Try it next time. The next time someone expresses doubt or triggers your feelings of “not enough,” say to yourself, “Wow, they must be feeling very insecure right now.” You’ll actually find yourself feeling compassionate instead of deflated. The same works for any other thought or feeling. “Wow, they must be feeling very sad, angry, overwhelmed, confused, etc.” It’s a simple trick, but highly effective. As Ruiz says in his powerful little book The Four Agreements, “Don’t take anything personally.” Find the Wonders of Who You Are External circumstances are not the cause of stress – stress is caused by all the things we’ve taken personally throughout our lives. This means we CAN create change. With the help of hypnosis, which gives us access to all that negative and untrue programming, we can literally erase those negative imprints, and underneath them, find the wonders of who we are and what we’re capable of. And when we do, we look at ourselves and all of life’s challenges differently. In the future, when someone expresses doubt, we’ll feel compassion for their self doubt; we won’t take it in. We’ll know that challenges are unavoidable, but we won’t fear them anymore. We’ll know that we’re capable of handling them. We’ll know that they’ll teach us a lot, make us stronger, and that they, like everything else, will pass. And, because we’ll have a different mindset, our bodies will have a stronger and healthier energy, and everything will align for the betterment of ourselves and all concerned. Lisa Zaccheo, MA, BCH, BC, is the owner, lead hypnotist and hypnosis instructor at Mind Matters Hypnosis Centers in Avon, Guilford and North Branford, CT. She is Board Certified by the National Guild of Hypnotists and has additional certifications in Complimentary Medical, Clinical, Child & Adolescent, Forensic and Regression hypnosis, just to name a few. 9 Tips for Your Ecofriendly Wedding

D

id you know that today more than 60% of brides want to include at least some eco-friendly elements in their wedding planning? It makes sense, because taking care of the earth means thinking about the future – and that is what weddings are all about. The great news is that the number of eco-friendly options has exploded over the last few years, and you can now make your wedding green no matter your style or budget. The trick is to keep the environment in mind as you walk through the planning process. Here are some easy ways to get started: 1. Set Up A Free Wedding Website As soon as you get engaged begin working on your wedding website. You can find free wedding websites with optional matching eco-friendly invitations at mywedding.com. A website is a great place to store important information about your big day and eliminate the need to print hotel suggestions, directions, RSVP cards and gift registry information. 2. Select Ethical Wedding Rings The average American couple spends over $7,000 on their engagement and wedding rings. Eco-conscious jewelers use recycled stones and metals, as well as ethically sourced diamonds and gemstones to craft beautiful, affordable and eco-friendly wedding rings. You can also have a vintage or family heirloom recast in a modern recycled gold setting. 3. Send An Eco-Friendly Wedding Invitation The number of digital wedding invitation options is growing every day, but there is still something nice about getting a wedding invitation in the mail. That said, paper processing can be quite detrimental to the environment. Great eco-friendly wedding invitation options include tree-free paper, post-consumer waste recycled paper and FSC certified wood wedding invitations. You can also find plantable wedding invitations that include native wildflower seeds and all-in-one invitation designs that act as their own envelopes. 4. Wear An Eco-Friendly Wedding Dress Most of the 2 million+ wedding gowns and countless bridesmaid’s dresses sold in the United States every year are made from non-renewable petroleum-based synthetic fabrics and are manufactured in sweatshops oversees. Many designers now offer eco-couture wedding gowns made from sustainable materials. An eco-chic bride can also buy vintage, have a family gown altered to fit your taste, or even rent a wedding gown. 5. Wear Non-Toxic Makeup Sadly, most of the beauty products on the market today contain known carcinogens and neurotoxins. Your wedding is a great excuse 12

Natural Nutmeg - April 2015

to buy new non-toxic beauty products. Check the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Database to find everything you need to look fabulous. 6. Buy Seasonal Flowers Over half of the florists in the U.S. use imported flowers that are sprayed with pesticides and fungicides. These chemicals can be harmful to your health and contaminate waterways and drinking supplies. Using local, seasonal and organic flowers decreases fuel consumption and is often less costly than ordering exotic species and out-of-season blooms, which must be shipped in from overseas. 7. DIY Green Wedding Decor No matter what your budget or theme, putting a little extra thought into both ceremony and reception decor will reduce onetime-use items. Something as simple as reusing ceremony floral arrangements at your reception will eliminate the need to purchase as many flowers. Use your location and the season for inspiration. For example, for a fall wedding use apples, pinecones or pumpkins to decorate your reception tables. Finally, favors are an easy thing to green and there are many beautiful eco-friendly wedding favor ideas to choose from. 8. Serve Local Food and Drinks The average American meal travels 1,500 miles. No matter how you choose to design your menu, using in-season local and/ or organic foods will decrease the carbon footprint of your meal while supporting the local economy. Organic caterers and green restaurants create menus bursting with fresh, seasonal foods. When available, provide guests with local wine, beer, and other beverages as well. 9. Register For Green Gifts By creating a green wedding gift registry you can support sustainable businesses while educating your guests about eco-friendly products. Ready to plan a green wedding? Visit the Green Bride Guide blog for tips, tricks and inspiration. Also check out the Green Bride Guide shop to find hundreds of eco-friendly wedding artisans for your big day. Contributed by Kate L. Harrison. Kate is the author of The Green Bride Guide: How To Create An Earth-Friendly Wedding on Any Budget, the founder of www.greenbrideguide.com - the leading green wedding resource – and the Eco-Friendly Marketing Director at mywedding.com.

Harness the Power of Your Body!

B

ad posture is a modern day health epidemic that is much worse than most people understand. More often than not, we find ourselves slouching at some point during our daily lives. While it seems perfectly harmless at the time (especially during those painfully boring work days), the long-term effects of poor posture are far worse than most of us realize. Posture Facts The word ‘posture’ refers to the alignment of your spine with all its adjoining structures. If you have good (neutral) posture, you will have proper spinal alignment at all times. However, if you have developed bad posture over the years, it is likely the result of slouching, hunching or slumping during your everyday routine. When your body is in any of the aforementioned three positions, the spinal column is disrupting nearly all major components of the musculoskeletal system. The brain and spinal cord are the most important elements in the human body. Poor posture increases pressure on nerves, ligaments and tendons and puts extra wear and tear on the musculoskeletal system. The body naturally makes rapid adjustments to compensate for poor posture, leading to decreased blood flow, inadequate healing, and restricted nerve communication from the brain to the body through the neck. Do You have Bad Knees, Shoulders, or Compressed Disks? Proper alignment and movement are essential for overall health. Unfortunately, standing, sitting and/or moving improperly will cause problems in your body. When your spine is misaligned, weight and stress are redistributed throughout the body. This action causes short-term pain and potentially long-term structural damage. Spinal misalignment leads to bad posture, which most commonly impacts joints in the spine, knees and shoulders. Bad posture also places added stress on the vertebrae of the spine, causing connective disks to wear down more quickly and bones (of the spine) to compress.

Benefits of Good Posture Good (or neutral) posture helps us stand, walk, sit, and lie in positions that place the least amount of strain on supporting muscles and ligaments during movement and weight-bearing activities. Correct posture: • Helps keep bones and joints in correct alignment so that muscles are used correctly. • Reduces the stress on the ligaments holding the spinal joints together. • Allows muscles to work more efficiently, allowing the body to use less energy. • Helps prevent muscle strain, overuse disorders, and even back and muscular pain. A person with good posture will have three natural curves in the back, with the line between the shoulders held level, not tilted. The head should be held straight; no tilting or turning to one side! When your spine is in a straight line down the center of your back, you have good posture. In order to sustain good (neutral) posture, the muscles of the body must be in balance to support an aligned spine. When in a neutral posture, the body is in its strongest and most balanced state, allowing for optimal efficiency and minimal stress on the joints and the rest of the body.

Solution: How It Works Research has shown that people who possess a strong posture feel and appear more confident. The Posture6 gives you confidence in movement that will be recognized by others around you. With the Posture6, you will correct unconscious poor postural habits through awareness of how you may be harming yourself. The Posture6 features a hexagonal design that uses one satin strap to produce a comfortable harness. It is a communication device which automatically reminds users that they are slouching. While the device is supporting the body, it does not have any adverse effects on movement; rather, it enhances and reinforces correct movement—even while sitting and standing. The goal is to make good (neutral) posture an unconscious, automatic behavior. J. Brendan Ammann is the creator of the Posture6. A licensed massage therapist since 2004, Brendan Ammann combines a degree in mechanical engineering with training in gymnastics, kettlebell, Olympic lifting and a first degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. For 12 years, he has been working with people who have had chronic body problems. Brendan had been searching for the Posture6 ever since a childhood injury left him with a lifetime of chronic neck and back pain. Now that he has experienced the benefits and convenience of wearing the Posture6, he knows it will help others as well. Please visit www.posture6.com. See ad on page 9.

Can a Horse be Your Best Coach? “Horses are experts at helping people develop power, focus, balance-in-motion, social intelligence and the physical, mental and emotional collection demanded of great leaders” -Linda Kahonov, The Tao of Equus

R

ecent research indicates that interaction with nature reduces stress levels, improves memory and gives us a sense of belonging to the larger ecosystem. This research is related to the emerging field of ‘Ecotherapy’, where we are invited to engage in nature-based activities to restore our sense of well-being. In Western Europe, Ecotherapy is already integrated into the health care system. Doctors may require patients to spend time at a farm, taking walks, swimming in a mountain lake or working with animals or flowers. Imagine receiving a written prescription like that from your physician! Bringing together the wisdom of nature’s restorative capacities, the strong results found from animal assisted work and the unique skills of coaching, fortunate practitioners are engaging in ‘Equine Assisted Coaching’. While it stands alone with its own distinction, equine assisted work is often recognized as a component of the broader field of Ecotherapy, a certificate program offered uniquely at The Graduate Institute in Bethany, CT. Equine Assisted Coaching provides a perfect backdrop to more deeply embody the learning provided from more traditional coaching approaches. “This horse looks uncomfortable. I refuse to be in a place where I have to prove myself. I know I am not wanted here. This horse does not want me to lead it. She’s thirsty, hot and wants to get out of this barn. I don’t want to make her do what she doesn’t want to. Just free her please – Now! I can’t do this. ” This was the running litany of objections I heard while in the indoor ring with my client, Jennifer, and our accompanying horse, ‘Coach Beatrice’, a formidable white and brown draft paint cross. Beatrice was rescued as a baby from a ranch that routinely extracted her mother’s urine to make pharmaceuticals and kept her still for months at a time. Knowing of her own good fortune, Coach Beatrice is an eager servant of this kind of work. This session was not as easy as Jennifer had hoped. But she did leave with a breakthrough she could not have anticipated, one that coaching alone may not have created. I learned that if my commitment was haphazard, I got no results or mediocre ones at best. Through the session, I recognized the lifelong patterns that have been invisible to me until now. - Jennifer, Human Resource Executive

Natural Nutmeg - April 2015

It is said that horses are ‘emotional prodigies’ who have the ability to sense what is foremost on our agenda, emotionally, intellectually and even spiritually, usually way before we can. This can be either intimidating or profoundly comforting, depending on what each of us uniquely brings into the ring. Some say it is a place of metaphor that has direct translation to the workplace, our primary relationships and to our own hopes and dreams. I have seen it myself and am humbled time and again by the feedback that these early domesticated animals offer us as we interact with them to bring about some result. If we step outside of our own sense of purpose, direction, clarity, the horse senses a kind of ‘danger’ in our incongruence and responds with an obvious restlessness. However, if we are authentic to our fear or trepidation and can learn to ‘befriend’ it, the horse immediately perks up and seems willing to partner with us. In equine-based coaching, the horse might spook, for instance, in response to someone’s own fear level or they might act bored and proceed to distract themselves, often revealing a lack of focus on the part of the coachee as was the case for Jennifer. As a coach, we are taught to care as much for the human participant as we do the horse coach’s well-being. We are therefore attentive to setting up safety guidelines, thereby creating body awareness, raising emotional intelligence and increasing the sensory perception about the boundaries and needs of the coachee as well as the horse. Hence, as one approaches the horse, the metaphor becomes glaring. Just as with approaching a boss, a fellow employee or a loved one, all parties are served if at least one of them is aware of the factors at play and where their personal ‘edges’ of comfort and emotional as well as physical safety lie. More often than not, we crash through one another’s comfort zones and do so without permission, perhaps assuming more familiarity than we actually have. Or just the opposite, we keep too much of a distance and we lose connection quickly. If we are too aggressive or if we are wishy washy in work or at home, people often have to ‘get away from’ us in order to fully relax and feel that they can be themselves. Sound familiar? This was evidenced in a recent 2.5 day Professional and Personal Development Intensive offered by Brinkerhoff Associates in CT. The intent of the experience was to offer ringside coaching (in our offices in New Haven) as a kickoff to a longer term coaching relationship. While shocking insights can occur in just one session with our horse coaches and can span many life issues, this engagement was

focused on preparing Jennifer for a mid-life career transition. Using William Bridges’ three phases model of transition, the process included: (Phase 1) creating a safe place to have a clear and honorable ending to what the client was needing to let go of, and; (Phase 2) provide compassionate support and honest perspective as she navigated the chaos or neutral zone, and; (Phase 3) help her launch a new beginning. The actual client request sounded something like this: Help me figure out who I am and how others perceive me in ways that have either held me back or will serve me in the next part of my life? Ironically, in the written pre-work and the interview, she protested the idea of showing up somewhere where she was not entirely welcomed. This had been a theme throughout her career where she had become persona non grata more than once. Coach Beatrice would soon elucidate this and gave her an expanded view of how she actually created herself as unwelcome, even before she entered a situation. Jennifer worked hard to appear to be a decisive person which is helpful in leadership positions. Yet it became obvious that the reason for her decisiveness was not her personal clarity but that ambiguity itself created immediate anxiety in her. This often forced her to make decisions prematurely, thereby alienating others and closing down her other options. By 2 pm on day one, she looked at me and exclaimed “I got it. I am done!” and she began creating her action plan and considered packing up. In her usual charming way, she said that she had already gotten her money’s worth and would it be ok to go out now for martinis! As her coach, I literally had to use an old adage, “Hold your horses!” I invited her to remain open to new options and insights. Perhaps the easiest, most gracious client I have ever worked with, Jennifer appeared to be hiding behind her quick wit, social adeptness and ability to befriend her coach, which was a perfect trap for me. As soon as Coach Beatrice took over in the ring, however, there would be little room for anything short of Jennifer’s total clarity, purpose-driven action, and inner authority. The horse itself seemed to struggle with intense disinterest, at times chomping at the gate and sniffing the corners of the barn. When Jennifer failed to feel the welcome or the connection she so required in all her other affairs, she

completely lost her ability to extend herself, express her leadership or offer a clear direction and became almost visibly angry. The dilemma of having been downsized many months before and losing her sense of direction and purpose was immediately present… it was excruciating for her and in a flash, almost more than she could bear.

Horses respond to proximity, pressure and permission, just like us. The evidence was in! If it is true that all things are accomplished through relationship, then it was going to be important for Jennifer to find a new relationship to this situation in her life, currently showing up as Coach Beatrice’s disinterest. In Neuro-

linguistic Programming, there is a concept that refers to the importance of ‘pace, pace, pace, lead, pace, pace, lead’. This is akin to David Rock’s neuro-leadership work in which he refers to the approach-avoid phenomenon. At any given moment, we are all sensing a genuinely welcoming atmosphere or an anxiety producing one which indicates whether or not we should move toward something or move away from it. In order to create a sustainable relationship and earn the privilege of leading another over time, be it animal or human, we must engage in creating and keeping rapport, watching always for what we do that can be perceived as a threat. Jennifer found herself a self-proclaimed relationship expert without having established a real relationship to the horse. Why?

What got you to the successes in your life thus far may serve as blinders for you to get where you want and need to go next. The horses, emotional prodigies that they are, do not buy our ‘false self’ but rather call forth our authentic power which is a mix of natural strengths as well as the discounted parts of our selves. In order to get Coach Beatrice to keep interest, to move, to complete a task, Jennifer had to dig into the least exercised muscles of her personality. Coach Beatrice gave flawless feedback moving between uncharacteristic agitation and staring longingly at the sky and her friends in the fields far off. How this began to translate for Jennifer is that she became increasingly apologetic for her existence, growing smaller personally and minimizing the importance of her mission in favor of the comfort of another. I could see how this moment was her ‘personal prison’ and held the potential for her healing as well as her continued suffering. Most horses are infinitely forgiving. They seem to understand our humanity and our own ‘self-forgetting’. They will often wait patiently until we can recover and refocus on the task at hand. With horses, as with life, we always have a fresh moment to begin again. What they seek is our clear direction which requires us to trust ourselves as we move into action, even if the next step is not clear to us. They simply will not follow our lead if we are not ready to stand in our own knowing. When we are authentic to our purpose and intent, we inevitably look up to find a willing partner ready to serve. When we are approached, we set the boundary. When we are approaching, they set the boundary. By this time, there was still little movement so I said, “Please end the activity in your own way and when you are ready.” At this moment, I noticed Jennifer dropped her fixation about how it was supposed to be done, took a nice deep breath, dropped into her real self and a sense of natural resolve, summoning herself and Coach Beatrice with clarity and ease. To Coach Beatrice’s delight, she finally received true guidance and a clear task to accomplish! Together, they were flawless in their execution. Jennifer beamed. This was a well-earned culmination to our work in the office and in the ring. With the help of Coach Beatrice, Jennifer more clearly understood the subtle energies that had been controlling her life choices. Her patterns had lasted a lifetime. The insight came in a moment. In that emotional confrontation, Jennifer became more aware and was freer to act according to what the moment called for and not just employ a tired old strategy. In the process, she took with her an inner set of tools she can use to pursue her dreams. Why Meditate? By Juliette Storch “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” -Aristotle

M

editation is so much more than being ‘zenned out.’ It’s about the creation of a morning (and maybe even an evening) ritual that brings you into clear focus and prepares you for the day. It’s about creating a center of excellence that starts with you. It’s about developing a habit that can sustain you through all the ups and downs of life. As a matter of fact, the more you meditate, the more the ups and downs of life become smooth sailing on the river of life. Meditation connects you directly to the universal flow. How does meditating connect to the phrase, “Getting your game face on?” Intentions and Success “Getting your game face on” means to get serious, to concentrate, and to prepare yourself, all with the intention to succeed. The two key words here are intention and succeed. In order to succeed you need to set your intention. You need to focus. And I mean laser focus in on…you. Because what you focus on grows. The ‘succeed’ part is up to you. It’s up to you to decide what that means for you. You’re the only one who can answer that question. We all have that question built into our DNA code and we all get to answer it in our own unique way. The answering of that question drives forth your purpose, brings the unlimited potential to the surface and takes the questioning out of the equation. You just know. And the only way I know that you can decide what it means to you is to really get to know yourself. To get to know yourself you have to go

inward. You have to check yourself out. You have to align the inner you with the outer you. You have to get real with yourself. You have to get through the conflicts of what you want people to see, how you think people want you to act, and how you actually feel about things. Who Are You? You have to ‘come out.’ This means bringing out your authenticity. There’s no other way. The only way to ‘come out’ is to go inward and check things out. Discard what doesn’t serve you. Scratch through the surface and see what is, not what you want it to be. You have to flip it. The best way I know to get to the core of you is to meditate. There’s a reason why the ancient inscription above the Oracle of Delphi is “Know Thyself.” Meditating gets you there. For so many years all I heard was, meditate, meditate, meditate. I’d be sitting in my living room and see my mom meditating and doing her nightly yoga and I wondered, “Why is she doing this?” When Deepak Chopra opened his center down the street from me in San Diego, I took a couple of classes and while I felt relaxed and energized at the same time, the meditation part didn’t stick. Later, Oprah and Deepak came out with their 21-day meditation challenge and I committed to doing it every day and it stuck. I’ve been meditating every morning and evening ever since (well almost ever since, barring a few snafus.) Your Connection with The Universe I know the secret. It’s the most important thing that I can do every day and every evening. The secret is…drum roll please…

connecting to the deepest most sacred part of me (my subconscious) as it connects with the deepest most sacred part of the universe (the super consciousness). It’s all within us. We are already divine. Meditation is the sacred time of diving into the vast consciousness of all that is, ever was and will be. If you go inward and let the silence wash over you, something magical happens. Deepak explains in his recent January 2015 newsletter that you become present, “…You are not setting out to engage the mind’s contents but to experience consciousness itself. In the spiritual traditions from which meditation emerged, it was noticed that the mind naturally becomes quiet when you first wake up in the morning or go to sleep at night. At these times of natural quiet, you feel present and in the moment, yet there’s nothing particular on your mind. This moment of simple awareness may last only a few seconds. The ancient sages and seers of India took this seemingly blank space and explored it. What they discovered was that the apparent emptiness of a quiet mind wasn’t empty at all. It was the source of all possibilities. With deeper exploration, they found a field of creative potential that transcended daily life.” (Chopra.com, January 2015.) Meditation connects you to who you are, connects you to your higher self, and connects you to your inner world, and let me tell you, it goes to some wild and deep places, down rabbit holes, into mazes, and deep under the currents of the water. I know exactly when I’m there because the magical sensation of all-ness and nothingness presents itself very clearly. My entire www.NaturalNutmeg.com

body tingles and goes from being all parts, a nose, an arm, and a toe, to being all living particles of light. You may at this point be saying to yourself, this is typical woo woo talk and it may be. Oprah, Clint, Martin, and More But then again, there are lots of others like me who are not woo woo. Russell Simmons, Arianna Huffington, Oprah, Katy Perry, Russell Brand, Paul McCartney, Jennifer Aniston, Ellen DeGeneres, Clint Eastwood, Martin Scorsese, George Stephanopoulos, Eva Mendes, Gabrielle Bernstein, Rupert Murdoch, David Lynch, Bill Ford, Jack Kornfield, and Rick Rubin, just to name a few. According to David Lynch, “…most of us go through lives wearing a “Suffocating Rubber Clown Suit of Negativity.” Log enough meditation and that suit will ‘dissolve.’” To read more see, “Ohm Sweet Home,” Town & Country, September 2014 issue.

So why meditate? That’s really a question for you to answer from the depths of your soul. As for me, I meditate to be completely open, positively charged, anchored to the earth mother, and wanting for nothing and open to everything that my higher self wishes to show me through my subconscious. “Meditation is nothing but withdrawing all the barriers; thoughts, emotions, sentiments, everything that builds a wall between you and existence. The moment they drop, you suddenly find yourself in tune with the whole; not only in tune, you really find you are the whole.” –Osho Juliette lives a real life filled with joy, magic, and success—a life she co-created with the Universe. hen was the last time you went out with your friends or your partner to do something fun? Did the experience cause you any pain? Were you feeling the repercussions for days? Unfortunately, growing old is often synonymous with our health breaking down. The anti-aging movement may help you appear beautiful well into your later years, but do you actually feel good on the inside? Do you have ample energy to do all the things you want to do in your day? Growing old does not have to equate to degeneration. But to make any grand change, you need to make a grand gesture. To make a grand gesture, it is helpful to consider all aspects of your body. This article will review some natural strategies to help you improve your health and lead a pain-free life. Digestive Health and Illness It may come as a surprise, but digestive health is in fact one of the most important steps to achieving a pain-free life. What is digestive health? According to Elizabeth Lipski’s book, Digestive Wellness, faulty digestion is directly responsible for a large number of seemingly unrelated illnesses such as arthritis, migraines and auto-immune disorders. Improving digestive health is one way to reduce inflammation in the body. By reducing inflammatory foods that contribute to disease and illness, you can take steps towards a pain-free, healthier life. Inflammatory Foods How can you reduce chronic pain and promote health in your body through digestion? One way is to reduce inflammatory foods. Here is a list of some foods that are particularly inflammatory. 1. Eliminate Gluten Gluten is a protein that is found in wheat, rye, barley, and often oats. It is a ‘pro-inflammatory food;’ when you eat foods that contain gluten, you create more inflammation in the body. By avoiding gluten, you can make great strides toward better health. There have been countless reports of reduced joint pain, headaches, and other inflammatory symptoms, such as arthritic pain, following elimination of gluten in the diet. There are many substitutes today, as well as increased awareness in local restaurants about options for meals. For more information on how to maintain a gluten-free diet, visit www.gluten.net. 20

Natural Nutmeg - April 2015

2. Avoid Processed Foods and Preservatives Processed foods and preservatives are largely comprised of chemicals that are difficult for the body to digest. When you eat a lot of processed foods, your body becomes more inflamed, which leads to joint pain as well as other chronic issues. By maintaining a diet full of fresh foods, you can create an environment in your body that is more optimal for healing. 3. Refined/Processed Sugar and Sugar Substitutes As with processed foods, processed sugar is largely comprised of chemicals. These chemicals are not easily broken down and can lead to multiple health challenges when consumed over a lifetime. Some examples of sugar substitutes include Aspartame, Nutra Sweet, and Splenda. Refined sugar includes cane sugar and brown sugar, as examples. Refined sugars can be very toxic to the body. The incidence of diabetes in this country is rising dramatically, largely due to refined sugar in our collective diet. Sugar substitutes often contain chemicals that can be carcinogenic and highly toxic. By avoiding refined sugar and sugar substitutes, you can improve your health and longevity significantly. As an added benefit, by avoiding refined sugar, pain is often lessened. Some ‘natural sweeteners’ include honey, pure maple syrup, coconut sugar, palm sugar, and stevia. When used in moderation, these sweeteners can satisfy your sweet tooth without contributing to disease. 4. Drink Lots of Water Water is a true panacea! In fact, for many Americans, dehydration is a status quo. Without proper hydration, your body fails. Commonly, joint pain is accompanied by swelling in the joint. Drinking lots of water helps to filter the fluid in your body, which can be helpful in reducing chronic joint pain. It is also important that your water source is optimally clean. If you are drinking tap water, be sure that it is filtered. 5. Reduce Grain in Your Diet Grain is essentially rice, wheat, barley, couscous, pasta, bread, baked goods, etc. There is growing research showing that many of the diseases that affect us in later life are contributed to by high intake of grain throughout our lifetimes. A prominent voice in this

You can visit the following link for a more complete list of foods and their corresponding glycemic index: www.glycemicindex.com/ foodSearch.php. By lowering your glycemic load, you can make tremendous changes in your health. ‘Grand Gesture’ beyond Diet To make a grand gesture towards health, you need to consider all aspects of your life. Changing the food that you eat on a daily basis is a great start. In addition to implementing dietary changes, there are additional natural strategies that lead to a pain-free life, such as reducing your exposure to harmful chemicals in the environment. In reality, unless you live in a secluded community, it would be impossible to completely avoid environmental toxins. But there are many efforts you can make to lessen your exposure. Here are some helpful suggestions: 1. Replace synthetic cleaners and detergents in your home with natural versions. Even a simple change such as this can lead to significant health benefits. 2. Replace your soap, shampoo, and other body products with natural versions. So often, we take for granted some of the symptoms that we deal with on a day-to-day basis. Changing the brand of soap you use to a more natural one can eliminate previously irresolvable issues such as daily redness or rashes on the face and even psoriasis and other skin issues. 3. Buy produce that is organic or natural and free of pesticides and growth hormones. It is true that organic foods are more expensive. Hopefully, one day, this will change. One option is to search for a local CSA (a community supported agriculture co-op farm) that sells memberships. These farms will provide you with great natural produce through the warm months of the year and often they provide a winter share as well. Body Work: Integrative Manual Therapy Improving what you put into your body and creating a healthier external environment for yourself are two very important steps towards a pain-free life. In addition, body work can help you feel better. Generally, your body learns how to compensate for injuries and traumas caused by car accidents, sports, illness, etc. But at a

6. Eat Low-Glycemic Food The glycemic index is a rating scale, which determines how quickly our blood sugar spikes after eating certain foods. For example, white potato or white bread is very high on the glycemic index, because after you eat these types of foods your blood sugar spikes quickly, and that is not good for your body. Sweet potatoes are lower on the glycemic index and don’t create that type of spike. An example of fruit that is lower on the glycemic index is berries. There are other fruits as well.

community is David Perlmutter, MD, a board-certified neurologist. In his book, Grain Brain, he lays out research on how a lifetime of grain sets the stage for neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. There are many grains that have been touted as healthy, such as brown rice and quinoa. The key to avoiding the inflammatory aspects of grain is to remove it from center stage. There are, in fact, some benefits from eating some grains but unfortunately, there also are inflammatory consequences from eating too much. It is helpful to completely avoid grain for a two-month period and then to assess how you feel when you eat small amounts of healthier grains.

For example, when there are biomechanical or joint problems at the pelvis, sacrum, and low back, a traditional approach of stretching and exercise can stretch out stiff muscles and looser joints, but this type of approach typically does not affect the tight joints which might be the true cause of the person’s pain and symptoms. Smooth and painless movement comes from normal joint mobility and alignment. IMT addresses this. Restore Alignment and Mobility, Reduce Inflammation Muscle spasms that often accompany long-standing pain may be symptomatically helped with heat or cold. When a muscle is in spasm, stretching and/or exercise does not release the spasm. Gentle hands-on techniques such as IMT can restore mobility to the spine and lower back, correct the position of the pelvis and the sacrum, and restore normal alignment between the lumbar spine and the sacrum. Once the joint alignment is restored, and there is less inflammation in the region, stretching and exercise will be much more effective to help create more movement. After the muscle spasm is released, the normal muscle tissue helps to maintain joint mobility, which can then allow you to return to stretching and exercise programs. Finding the Underlying Cause In addition to treatment of joint alignment with IMT, there are many underlying reasons why a person might experience pain that’s not necessarily related to a particular injury. Often, pain is compounded by inflammation, digestive problems, circulation issues, and much more. When something in the body requires protection (for example, something related to circulation or immu-

nity), the body’s tendency is to inhibit movement—to ‘lock up.’ This lack of movement can cause persistent pain and stiffness. IMT uses a comprehensive, hands-on assessment process to identify underlying causes of pain. Once these sites of dysfunction are found, a customized IMT treatment plan is developed to treat the underlying issues and restore normal movement in the body. The treatment plan consists of gentle hands-on techniques to promote greater health and a pain-free lifestyle. The idea that we can be energetic and pain-free into our later years is a foreign concept for many. How many of us feel like a train wreck most of the time? The ability to participate in leisure and sports activities with your friends and loved ones can be a reality when you implement the right changes in your diet and make some simple changes in your lifestyle. Finding the right manual therapist or body worker can aid in this process. We all know that change is never the easy route and often unwelcomed. At a certain point, we all seek out change when we feel ‘bad enough.’ Eating fewer inflammatory foods, reducing harmful chemicals in your environment, changing your cleaning and body products, and receiving manual therapy will lead you in the right direction and provide the resources that allow your body to heal itself. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) The Critical Full-Body Protector By Michael Dworkin, PD, CCN with J. Erika Dworkin If you’re older, your body becomes more and more challenged to convert the oxidized CoQ10 to ubiquinol . . . Further, as you get older your body levels of CoQ10 continue to diminish, making it even more difficult to maintain adequate levels. So, if you’re over 40, I would highly recommend taking a reduced form of coenzyme Q10 called ubiquinol because it’s far more effectively absorbed by your body. This is one of the few supplements I consider highly beneficial for nearly all adults. ~Joseph Mercola, DO - CoQ10: The Single Most Crucial Nutrient to Energize Every Cell in Your Body, December 2009

Y

ou may have heard of Coenzyme Q10 from your physician or television commercials. You may even have considered taking it because “you know it is good for you,” but do you know why? What Is CoQ10? Coenzymes, which cannot function independently, work with enzymes to initiate or support their various biochemical functions. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is critical to the chain of metabolic chemical reactions that generate cellular energy (ATP) and enable oxygen utilization. It is an antioxidant (neutralizes disease-promoting free radicals) that is highly concentrated in organs with higher energy requirements (especially those that manufacture it, the heart, kidneys, liver, and pancreas), but it is also found in every cell of the body and requires fat for absorption and storage Available Forms & Dosage Primary dietary sources of CoQ10 include oily fish (salmon, sardines, mackerel; ideally wild-caught), beef and organ meats (ideally organic; both are unhealthy for other reasons), and chicken and eggs (ideally organic). Much lower CoQ10 amounts derive from these fresh, raw, unprocessed vegetarian sources in descending order: spinach; broccoli; peanuts (not an optimal source, as they are high in saturated fat and mold); wheat germ; and whole grains. Take it with Fat CoQ10 is also available as a dietary supplement in two forms: (1) ubiquinone, the oxidized form, which the body partially con-

24

verts to ubiquinol and has weaker antioxidant activity; and (2) ubiquinol (CoQH2-10), the active, reduced form that is absorbed up to eight times better than ubiquinone and is available in numerous brands from only one manufacturer, Kaneka. Taking it with a fat enhances absorption. While oral supplementation of CoQ10 increases plasma, lipoprotein, and blood vessel levels, it is unclear whether it increases tissue levels in healthy individuals. However, scientific studies indicate that supplementation may increase CoQ10 levels in tissues that are deficient (Nutr Metab Cardiovasc Dis. 2008 Feb; Biogerontology. 2002; Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 1998). Appropriate dosage depends on each particular patient’s health status. Scientific Support for CoQ10 Supplementation The antioxidant CoQ10 appears to function through multi-targeted mechanisms and directly influences the expression of multiple genes involved in aging, especially those regulating inflammation. Its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and epigenetic mechanisms combine to offer impressive protection for the body’s many systems. A few are discussed here. Aging Greater oxidative damage to mitochondria, cellular power houses that generate energy, reduces life span. Since CoQ10 is an essential component of the mitochondrial energy transfer system, reduced levels increase mitochondrial dysfunction and accelerate aging. Adding CoQ10 back to ailing or aging mitochondria, however, enables them to burn energy more cleanly and efficiently and thus slow aging. Brain Support (Alzheimer’s & Parkinson’s) Mitochondrial dysfunction from chronic oxidation, and the resulting chronic inflammation, is a root cause of various neurodegenerative conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease. Accumulated oxidative stress leads to production and deposition of an abnormal protein called amyloid β-peptide, which itself triggers more oxidation and inflammation. By slowing oxidant damage, CoQ10 reduces deposition of destructive amyloid β-peptide proteins. (J Mol Neurosci. 2008 Feb) It has also been shown to cause amyloid β to destabilize after it is formed. (Biochem Biophys Res Commun. 2005 Apr).

Like Alzheimer’s, studies indicate that Parkinson’s disease (PD) results from mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative damage that triggers the production of an abnormal, inflammatory protein. In PD, the protein is called alpha-synuclein. Clinical studies show that high doses of CoQ10 (1,200 mg/day) hinders the development of PD disability and appears to slow the otherwise inevitable decline of patients with this disease. (J. Bioenerg. and Biomemb. 2004 August; JAMA Neurology 2002 October). Noting that CoQ10 is generally “a promising agent for neuroprotection in neurodegenerative diseases,” researchers in a later study tested ubiquinone, ubiquinol, and CoQ10 in two food formulations. They concluded that the study results “provide further evidence that administration of CoQ10 is a promising therapeutic strategy for the treatment of PD.” (J Neurochem. 2008 Mar). Cardiovascular Disease (CVD)/ Statin Drug Depletion CoQ10 benefits the heart by (1) maintaining the normal oxidative state of LDL cholesterol (Mol. Mech. Health & Dis., CRC Press, 2001), (2) supporting circulatory health (a 2007 meta-analysis of 12 clinical trials, including 362 hypertensive patients, found that 100-120mg of supplemental CoQ10 reduces blood pressure) (J Hum Hypertens. 2007 Apr), (3) promoting optimal heart muscle function, and (4) possibly improving the health of blood vessel walls (Biochem Biophys Res Commun. 2002). Conventional physicians primarily recommend statin drugs (Lipitor, Crestor, Zocor, Simvastatin) to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events and heart disease. According to numerous integrative heart disease experts (including Julian Whitaker, MD, Stephen Sinatra, MD, and Joseph Mercola, DO), however, these drugs can actually increase risk of heart failure by depleting the body of CoQ10. Statins lower CoQ10 levels by (1) reducing the blood cholesterol that transports CoQ10 and other fat-soluble antioxidants; and (2) blocking the pathway that is involved in both cholesterol and CoQ10 production. The loss of CoQ10 reduces cellular energy and increases free radicals which, in turn, can further damage mitochondrial DNA that sets off a health-destroying cycle of more of the same. In a double-blind, placebo controlled study of subjects taking statins who reported mild-to-moderate muscle pain, 50mg of CoQ10 administered twice daily for 30 days reduced the pain intensity

by 33.1% and interference with daily activities by 40.3%, and symptoms improved in 75% of the subjects given CoQ10. (Medical Science Monitor 2014). Depression Mitochondrial dysfunction and elevated brain oxidative-stress levels are characteristic of major depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. Sufferers thus have lower CoQ10 and cellular antioxidant levels, and higher markers of oxidant damage, than healthy controls. In one study, 1,200mg/ day of CoQ10 significantly reduced depression symptom severity during treatment of older adults with bipolar disorder. (J Geriatr Psychiatry Neurol. 2012). Diabetes & Metabolic Syndrome CoQ10 deficiency is closely correlated with reduced long-term blood sugar control and many of the complications of diabetes, including diabetic neuropathy (nerve damage), nephropathy (kidney damage), and endothelial dysfunction (an imbalance related to the inner lining of blood vessels) that causes cardiovascular damage. (J Pharmacol Sci. 2008 Jun; Methods Find Exp Clin Pharmacol. 2008 Jun). One study proved that adding CoQ10 to a healthy Mediterranean diet further reduces oxidant stress and fat oxidation in the period immediately following a meal (postprandial), when the body is especially vulnerable to damage [Age (Dordr). 2011 Dec]. In other studies, supplementation with 200 mg/day of ubiquinol reduced levels of hemoglobin A1c, a marker of blood sugar

control over time, to less than 7%, the upper limit of normal. (Biofactors. 2012 Aug; Eur J Clin Nutr. 2002 Nov). Gum Disease Gum disease causes swelling, bleeding, pain, and gum redness. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, clinical studies show that people with gum disease tend to have low levels of CoQ10 in their gums. A few small studies found that CoQ10 supplements led to faster healing and tissue repair. Migraine Headaches Although the exact cause of migraines is unclear, scientists suspect that mitochondrial dysfunction (i.e., low brain energy

levels resulting from CoQ10 deficiency [Headache. 2007 Jan]) may contribute to their occurrence by limiting oxygen metabolism. Studies of CoQ10 supplementation in children, adolescents and adults show substantial decreases in the frequency of migraine episodes, number of days with migraine symptoms, headache disability, and frequency of nausea. (Cephalalgia. 2011 Jun; Headache. 2007 Jan; Neurology. 2005 Feb [100mg, 3x/day of CoQ10 supplementation reduced migraine frequency by 27% after 3 months]). CoQ10 is so effective in managing migraines that the Canadian Headache Society lists it among the 11 most effective ‘drugs’ for preventing this debilitating condition.

Tibetan Healing Movement: Release Blocks in Body and Mind

Y

ou may feel this is overly simplistic, but I would argue that all problems we experience in our body and mind stem from a blockage. Yes, I mean that all diseases, musculoskeletal ailments, negative emotions and psychological issues can be traced to a block. Of course, this also means all these issues can be remedied—or better yet, prevented—by using methods that cultivate openness. Lu Jong is an effective, accessible, systematic (and enjoyable) method to release blockages on the physical, mental and energetic levels. The Mind/Body Connection Let me take a step back. I am speaking from the perspective of Tibetan Medicine as well as Tibetan Buddhism, which are integral. One of the basic principles of Tibetan Medicine is the deep interconnectedness of the body and mind. Negative emotions, also called mental poisons, negatively impact the body’s balance, eventually leading to disease. Likewise, once you know how, you can use the body to positively shift the mind. Health and happiness are intimately linked, not only because it is easier to be happy when we are healthy, but also because having an open body actually balances and calms our minds. To understand this we need to know a bit about the subtle body. While Tibetan Medicine focuses on the ‘gross’ (more dense) body, there is a more subtle aspect of ourselves that is the foundation of the physical body and mind. Now we enter the realm of Tantrayana Buddhism.

Do You Suffer from Low Energy, Emotional Swings and Stress? Our subtle body is composed of thousands of channels. The gross channels carry blood, lymph, oxygen and nutrients. There are more subtle channels that transport our hormones and energy, and even more subtle channels that transport our consciousness. When these channels become blocked—as they naturally do in the aging process, and even more so due to wrong diet, wrong exercise and negative emotions—that negatively impacts the body and causes a tightening of the mind and energy. So, how do we open the channels? The Tibetan tradition includes many movement practices that serve this very purpose. Of these, Lu Jong is the most connected with Tibetan Medicine and the most accessible. Tulku Lobsang, a doctor of Tibetan Medicine and highly regarded Buddhist teacher, refined this practice into a very clear system that addresses our most common modern health issues. Movement Lu Jong (In Tibetan, lu means body and jong means training or transformation) is a series of movements that rhythmically apply and release pressure to targeted points of the body in order to release blockages. It’s like doing your own acupressure. There are certain areas of the body that more commonly become blocked and therefore require specific attention. The most important of these areas are along the spine. Our spine is the energy box of our body. It is the root from which everything else branches. Just like a battery, we need to recharge the spine and be sure to keep it open and flexible. The spine is also where we carry emotional blockages. So Lu Jong focuses especially on mobilizing the spine. Other areas that easily become blocked include the joints and the senses.

Each exercise targets specific points on the channels to release any blocks associated with that area. The Lu Jong practice is in five groups: 1. The Five Elements Movements 2. The Five Musculoskeletal Movements 3. The Five Vital Organ Movements 4. The Six Common Conditions Movements 5. Movements for Sleep and Wakefulness Mindfulness This practice is also a meditation in movement. The exercises are rhythmic and direct our attention to our inner sensations. This mindfulness, in combination with a flowing breathing pattern, brings us fully into the present moment. Doing it regularly balances the physical body and trains the subtle body channels, and cultivates calmness, clarity and open-heartedness. It is indeed a spiritual practice. Farrah Garan is a teacher and writer whose goal is to empower others to cultivate a calm mind, vibrant energy and an open heart. She teaches Tibetan healing movement practices, including Lu Jong yoga, Tog Chod Sword Dance, and Tsa Lung Breathwork. She received the Tantrayana tradition from her teacher, Tulku Lobsang, more than 12 years ago. Farrah also offers teacher trainings so that more people can help others benefit from these practical methods. If you feel drawn toward this ancient yet modern approach, you could take a bold step and become a teacher yourself! Lu Jong Teacher Training will be held in New York in June. www.tibetanhealingmovement.com See ad on page 31.

10 Ways to Reduce the Risk of Tick Exposure and the Transmission of Tick-Borne Diseases.

Tick Talk – Prevention is the Best Medicine By: Dr. Tonya Pasternak

S

ince the late, 1970s, ticks have become a common part of the life of the New Englander. We learned back then that ticks were the vector, or carrier, for Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacteria responsible for Lyme Disease. Ticks can also be the vector for other bacteria, parasites or viruses that can cause debilitating illnesses, which are now categorized as ‘tick borne diseases.’’ Lyme is Not the only Problem Alone, Lyme can cause a myriad of symptoms, including a rash, fatigue, fever, swollen glands, arthritis, sleep disturbances, cognitive changes, and many more. It is common for individuals who have Lyme to also be co-infected with another bacteria, parasite or virus from the same tick bite. A Must-Read Handbook In 2007, the State of Connecticut put together a wonderful, educational, research-based book, called “The Tick Management Handbook,” by Kirby Stafford, PhD. The State no longer publishes the Handbook, but you can download it on the Connecticut Department of Public Health website; search Tick Management Handbook (www.ct.gov/dph). A link for the download is towards the bottom of the Connecticut DPH Lyme Disease webpage. (Or type ‘Tick Management Handbook’ in the search box.) This Handbook is the best single source for general information about ticks, tick-borne diseases, incubation, and prevention. This is a must read for all. Ticks are a Year-Round Problem Stafford emphasizes the numerous reservoirs for ticks; animals that the tick will feed on during its life cycle. Among these are squirrels, birds, deer, cats, dogs, and mice. We must recognize that we may invite some of these animals (dogs and cats especially) into our home and others come in uninvited. The risk for exposure to a tick can occur in and out of the home and at all times of the year. Dr. Pasternak is a New York State native who earned her bachelor degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology from SUNY New Paltz. She then received her doctorate degree in Naturopathic Medicine from Bastyr University in Washington State. Dr. Pasternak has specialized training in infectious disease and natural treatments for tick borne diseases and also has a passion for treating women’s health, autoimmune, endocrine and gastrointestinal health issues. She values partnering with patients, to meet them where they are and empowering them with her knowledge of botanical medicine, nutrition and lifestyle medicine. She can be reached at Connecticut Natural Health Services, 315 East Center St., Manchester, CT 06040; phone (860) 533-0179. See ad on page 5. 28

Natural Nutmeg - April 2015

1. Daily Tick Checks – According to research, it appears that the risk for transmission of the bacteria (B. Burgdorferi) for Lyme disease is less than 5% if the tick is attached for only 24 hours. If the tick is attached for 48 hours the risk of transmission increases to 80%. Daily tick checks of the entire body are the best way to keep the risk of transmission low. Parents should implement tick checks as part of bed-time routine. 2. Avoid tick habitats like wooded and bushy areas with high grass and a lot of leaf litter. If entering a tick area, walk in the center of the trail to avoid overgrown grass, brush and leaf litter. 3. Wear long pants, long sleeves, and long socks to keep ticks off your skin. Light-colored clothing will make it easier to spot ticks on clothing. Tuck pant legs into socks or boots, and tuck shirts into pants to keep ticks on the outside of clothing. 4. If spending long amounts of time outdoors, consider anti-tick bug spray. I am aware of the concern of using chemicals like DEET, but please consider the occasional use of a product containing DEET or something else that kills ticks to decrease your risk of getting bit by a tick. Use insect repellents containing from 20 percent up to 50 percent DEET on exposed skin and clothing. Products containing permethrin also are effective, but are to be used on clothing only. 5. Leave clothes in the dryer for an hour. Ticks cannot survive an atmosphere with very low humidity. 6. Remove a tick from your skin as soon as you notice it. Use fine-tipped tweezers to firmly grasp the tick very close to your skin. With a steady motion, pull the tick’s body away from your skin. Keep the tick. Some public health departments will test the tick for B. burgdorferi for a minor fee. This result can be very helpful when considering treatment. 7. Don’t use petroleum jelly, a match, nail polish or any other method to remove the tick. 8. Clean your skin with soap and warm water. 9. Avoid crushing the tick’s body. Do not be alarmed if the tick’s mouthparts remain in the skin. Once the mouthparts are removed from the tick’s body, disease bacteria can no longer be transmitted to you. 10. If you accidentally crush the tick, clean your skin with soap and warm water, or with alcohol. Following these steps will help reduce the risk of exposure to tick borne diseases for you and your family.

Allergy Season is Upon Us By: Robban A Sica, MD

T

he April rainfall along with all this snow melting is going to make for a very wet season and lots and lots of mold. Rainy days increase mold spores counts in the air, magnifying mold allergy symptoms. Inhalant allergies from trees, weeds, grasses, and molds can cause or contribute to a variety of conditions, beyond the typical hay fever symptoms including sinus headaches, asthma, fatigue, brain fog, recurring sinus and ear infections and fibromyalgia. The side effects of a conventional medical approach Over the counter and prescription medications simply mask the allergy by blocking an enzyme system or a receptor site, or by blocking the production of a naturally occurring substance in the body. There are many potential side effects when using medications, even drugs that are generally thought to be safe and benign, such as daily baby aspirin or Tylenol, are the direct cause of many deaths per year. Why are allergies so prevalent today? Allergies are a product of our industrial revolution. Physicians of that time period were extremely puzzled by the sudden appearance of this strange new disease around urban centers. Clearly the exposure to smoke and other environmental pollutants activated the patient’s immune system to overreact to naturally occurring substances. Recent statistics show that over 25% of the population suffers from some sort of allergy. It’s not just the plants outside that we are allergic to, but diet, food allergies and exposure to chemical toxins in food and the environment can also cause or contribute to a variety of illnesses, such as allergies. In addition to toxicity, factors such as intestinal dysbiosis, Candidiasis (yeast infections caused by antibiotics), intestinal permeability (leaky gut), nutritional deficiency, malabsorption and digestive enzyme deficiencies and even genetic tendencies all play important roles in the development of allergies and aggravation of symptoms. What is an allergy? An allergy can be defined as an abnormal physical reaction to substances called allergens, or antigens, that are harmless to most people. Pollen, house dust mites, mold spores and mycotoxins, animal dander, foods, drugs, dyes, cosmetics, perfumes, and stinging insects are the most common sources of allergens. These allergens can enter the body in different ways: pollens, house dust, and mold spores are inhaled; food allergens are swallowed; poison ivy and cosmetic products cause allergic reactions by touch; certain drugs and insect venoms enter the body by injection. The immune system produces antibodies as a defense against the infection and other diseases. In allergic people, excessive antibodies are produced and these antibodies react with the allergens, releasing inflammatory chemicals, such as histamine and cause allergic symptoms. These reactions may be immediate, as in an acute hypersensitivity reaction, or delayed. Foods and molds can typically cause delayed reactions, even 48 to 72 hours after the exposure.

Treating allergies with Integrative Medicine Most people cringe at the thought of a needle and may avoid traditional allergy testing which is done by a scratch test or intradermal testing. There is a quick and painless alternative allergy testing method performed by Dr. Sica at Center for the Healing Arts. Although allergy desensitization injections are available, allergy treatment is also effectively accomplished with sublingual drops (under the tongue). The goal is to reduce the allergy symptoms and calm down the immune system, which over time will often eliminate the need for further treatment. Robban Sica, MD of Center for the Healing Arts, PC, received her doctorate from the Medical College of Ohio. She of is the founder and medical director of this innovative and successful practice. Her background study includes holistic medicine, anti-aging, natural hormone replacement and endocrine problems, nutrition/vitamin supplementation including natural alternatives to medication, allergies, and environmental medicine, heavy metal toxicity using chelation therapy, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and treatment of chronic illnesses. Using a cooperative blend of traditional and alternative medicine, this integrative and preventative medicine center addresses health conditions by identifying the underlying stressors. Treating Children’s Seasonal Allergies Naturally

By: Dr. Robin Russell easonal allergies, also known as allergic rhinitis, are an overreaction to substances that you breathe, causing an inflammatory response that affects the lining/mucus membranes of the nasal passages, sinuses, throat, eyes, Eustachian tubes and middle ear.

S

How Common are Seasonal Allergies? According to the most recent US data (collected in 2012), seasonal allergies were reported in 9 percent of the pediatric population, and 7.5 percent of adults. Outdoor seasonal allergies typically develop in children older than two years of age with the average onset occurring between four and six years of age. Indoor allergies can develop in children younger than two years of age. Seasonal allergies, on average, are diagnosed in children between eight and eleven years old. Having a personal or family history of other allergies (food), asthma, or eczema, increases the risk of developing seasonal allergies. How Seasonal Allergies Affect Your Body In susceptible people, the immune system overreacts to substances (allergens) that would not normally affect other people. Once the body recognizes the allergens as foreign, the immune system produces antibodies called Immunoglobulin E (IgE) that are specific for the allergen. Every time thereafter that the body is exposed to the allergen, the body makes IgE, which ultimately results in the release of inflammatory chemical mediators such as histamine, leukotrienes, prostaglandins, and cytokines. These inflammatory mediators then cause inflammation of the mucous membranes lining the nasal passages, sinuses, throat, eyes, Eustachian tubes, and middle ear, ultimately leading to typical allergy symptoms. Seasonal Allergy Symptoms While seasonal allergy symptoms can vary from person to person, typical symptoms include sneezing, itching (of nose, eyes, ears, and throat), runny nose, postnasal drip, sore throat, nasal congestion, headache, ear pain, watery eyes, red eyes, “allergic shiners,” and fatigue.

Natural Nutmeg - April 2015

Allergy Causes 1. Seasonal (highest pollen and mold counts are at night and early morning) a. Winter: None b. Spring: Grass pollen, tree pollen c. Summer: Ragweed, grass pollen, molds growing on leaves d. Fall: Ragweed, molds growing on leaves 2. Perennial/ Year Round a. Pet dander (cats, dogs, furry animals and birds) b. Dust mites c. Cockroaches d. Molds growing on wallpaper, house plants, carpeting, and upholstery e. Feathers in pillows and down comforters (secondary to dust mite infestation) Allergies can Lead to Illness Allergies can happen alone, but oftentimes will present in people who also have asthma (20%), and/ or eczema. When left untreated, allergy symptoms may lead to sinus infections, ear infections, chronic fatigue, mouth breathing, and sleep disturbance. Diagnosis Seasonal Allergies can be diagnosed by several methods. The two most common are a skin test, and a blood test called RAST Testing, which measures levels of IgE and potential allergens. Treatments 1. Environmental control measures: a. Air purifier in the bedroom b. HEPA air filters on the furnace c. Vacuuming the bedroom often (and removal of carpeting) d. Dusting the bedroom often e. Laundering bed linens often, using the hottest water and dryer cycle possible f. Keeping windows and doors closed when the pollen count is high g. Using dust-mite proof mattress and pillow covers

2. Medications a. Antihistamines b. Leukotriene antagonists c. Nasal decongestants d. Intranasal steroid spray e. Intranasal cromolyn spray f. Short courses of oral steroids 3. Immunotherapy a. Allergy shots b. Sublingual, approved by the FDA in April of 2014 for adults and children over five years of age. Natural Treatments The approach to treating seasonal allergies successfully extends beyond controlling symptoms with medications designed to suppress the immune system. Not only is the immune system involved in seasonal allergies but the gastrointestinal system (GI) is thought to be as well. The GI houses more than 80% of the immune system. Optimal gut health is essential in maintaining optimal immune health. Inflammation of the gut may ultimately result in an overactive immune system, possibly contributing to allergies. Natural treatments include: 1. Environmental control measures as above 2. Neti-pot rinses: Add ¼ tsp of fine sea salt to 1 cup lukewarm sterile water and mix. Irrigate both nostrils daily. 3. Identify and address potential food allergies/intolerances/sensitivities. 4. Identify and address poor digestion: Suboptimal digestion may lead to increased inflammation of the gut, which may ultimately lead to an overactive immune system, possibly contributing to allergies. 5. Support the gastrointestinal system: a. Eliminate potential food allergies/ intolerances/ sensitivities. b. Incorporate anti-inflammatory, nutrient-dense, and probioticrich foods into the diet, such as fermented foods and beverages, broths, healthy fats and oils, fiber, and antioxidant rich foods. 6. Support the immune system: a. Foods high in antioxidants (Beta-carotene, Vitamin C, E, Zinc, Selenium), colorful fruits and vegetables, berries, greens, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. b. Probiotics 7. Supplements: a. Vitamin C: Antihistamine activity b. Vitamin D: Low levels of Vitamin D have been found in patients with Allergic Rhinitis. c. Quercetin: this bioflavonoid (antioxidant), derived from onions, shallots, organic tomatoes, and many other fruits, vegetables, leaves and grains, has anti-histamine and antiinflammatory properties. d. Butterbur (Petasites hybridus): herb with anti-inflammatory activity as well as research-based efficacy in treating seasonal allergies. e. Nettles (Urtica dioica): herb with anti-inflammatory activity. f. N-Acetylcysteine: an amino acid that has anti-oxidant, antiinflammatory, and mucolytic activity. g. Local honey 8. Homeopathics: a. Homeopathic Combination Allergy Remedies b. Individualized Homeopathic Remedy

Retrain Your Body to Prevent Allergies By Dr. Anne Mitchell

A

llergies occur when the body reacts inappropriately to a harmless substance. The reaction is a learned error in the immune system that creates a variety of symptoms from runny noses to fatigue. We used to think that it was very difficult and even impossible to treat allergies. Allergy patients were usually asked to completely avoid whatever caused your symptoms. No milk. No strawberries. No soy. Don’t play in the grass. Take antihistamines when the pollen bothers you. Avoid perfume, dust, and cats. Advanced Allergy Therapeutics (AAT) is a breakthrough technology that eliminates the reactions from most forms of allergies and sensitivities. Rather than simply addressing the symptoms, as practiced in traditional western medicine, AAT treats the problem at its source by retraining the body so that it no longer reacts inappropriately to a harmless substance. Once treated, patients can safely contact the substance that had previously caused the allergic reaction or sensitivity. Traditionally allergies only include IgE or histamine reactions, however AAT recognizes that the immune system is complex and sensitivities may cause reactions which are not histamine related but that create many symptoms in the body. AAT corrects the error and retrains the body to accept the substance. The same principle is applied with immunotherapy (allergy shots), which also retrains the body to accept a harmless substance through repeated subtle exposure. However, AAT utilizes a positive stimulus in addition to the subtle exposure. AAT has shown consistent results with tens of thousand of patients for over a decade. The success of the treatment is attributed to the extensive knowledge base of allergens, allowing for the treatment of a broad range of symptoms. Usually only one treatment is required per allergen. AAT is not a medical treatment. It has been developed from an entirely different field of therapeutics using principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the study of human physiology, and an in-depth knowledge of allergens. AAT’s research team includes medical doctors, acupuncturists, naturopaths and chiropractic doctors. With AAT you can live life free from allergies without shots, without needles, without drugs, without herbal remedies, without supplements and without avoiding allergens.

32

Natural Nutmeg - April 2015

How Does AAT Work? The ability to condition physiology with an external stimulus was first demonstrated by Dr. Ivan Pavlov in 1903. Pavlov showed that the physiology of a dog could be conditioned or trained by associating food with an external stimulus in the form of a sound, produced by a ringing bell. After establishing the association, the dog’s salivary glands would be activated by the stimulus even though no food was present. A similar dynamic occurs with AAT as it retrains the body to recognize allergens as neutral or beneficial instead of harmful. AAT treatments consist of gentle stimulation of specific nerve bundles and acupuncture points (no needles used) while you are being exposed to a specific digital signal of the allergen. The treatment is completely painless and noninvasive. In fact it feels good. Gentle pressure is used to stimulate acupuncture points on the back, which correspond with the major organ systems. According to traditional acupuncture theory, this stimulation relaxes the body and strengthens each of the major organ systems, creating a positive stimulus for the body. Exposure to very subtle and safe levels of the allergen using the unique AAT technology, and simultaneous spinal stimulation and relaxation form a positive association with the allergen. The body (immune system) alters its perception and corrects its own erroneous response. The body then perceives the allergen as beneficial and even useful.

In the past 20 years, Dr. Anne Mitchell has worked extensively with people with allergies and autoimmune disorders in addition to her general family practice. She uses a specific allergy desensitization treatment that is highly successful and is now introducing a technological advancement to make eliminating allergic symptoms easier and even more successful. A Food and Wine Lover’s Paradise in Seattle

S

unny, breezy, 80 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. Seriously… am I really in Seattle? This would be my 4th trip to this beautiful city and I kid you not, every time the weather has been absolutely stunning. I’m totally convinced that there is an urban legend going on about how terrible the weather is out here. In order to keep the population down, the locals all say it rains every day…but I think I’m on to them. Because really, between the amazing food and drink, nightlife scene, eclectic shops, Wild Alaskan King salmon for $11/lb, and gorgeous scenery – who wouldn’t want to live here? The entire world might move here if they thought the weather was like it is when I’ve visited. After our ferry ride from Friday Harbor into Anacortes, we drove out to Woodinville to experience some of the amazing wineries of the Columbia Valley. Washington has an interesting wine scene – all of the vineyards are actually about 3 hours east of Seattle out in the more arid, desert areas of Eastern Washington. However, all of the wineries where they do wine tastings are a short drive from the city. Realizing that most tourists weren’t going to drive to the vineyards, they brought the wine to the people. A great concept, but what I did find lacking was the typical picturesque scenery of the vineyards like you would see in Napa or Sonoma. We visited four fantastic wineries including: Columbia, Novelty Hill-Janiuk, J. Bookwalter and of course the world renowned, Chateau Ste. Michelle. Not that I would call myself a wine connoisseur by any means, but I do have certain varietals that I like and ones I traditionally don’t like; two of those being Chardonnay and Merlot. For me, most Chardonnay wines are just too rich and buttery, a result of being aged in oak barrels. And Merlot, well…most Merlot wines that I’ve tried have really just not been that complex or interesting – they’re often too light and I like an in your face bold type of red wine. Well, was I in for a re-education! Apparently, Washington State is the place for…you guessed it…Merlot wine. I cringed at the first winery when I saw the lineup and of course it included Chardonnay and Merlot. I laughingly told the sommelier that I wasn’t a big fan of either and she said…well, I think we might change your mind.

Natural Nutmeg - April 2015

At Columbia Winery we tried a very interesting 2012 Composition Red Blend. Composition is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah – a grape that the winemakers introduced to Washington State. Our next stop was the Novelty Hill-Janiuk winery where we enjoyed a lovely 100% Chardonnay. At J. Bookwalter winery, which interestingly names all of their wines after literary terms like protagonist, subplot and foreshadow, we tried some amazing cabs and red blends. My favorite was the 2011 Conflict which was produced during the coldest vintage on record in Eastern Washington. And of course, you can’t go wrong at Chateau St. Michelle who produces more Riesling than any other winery in the world. Three hours and wineries later and yup – I bought a bottle of Chardonnay and 2 bottles of Merlot. My friends will be laughing…that is until I convert them too! Later that day we checked into the Pan Pacific Hotel in downtown Seattle. Situated in an envious location only 10 minutes walking distance from the famous Space Needle or Pike’s Market, the Pan Pacific Seattle is a beautiful and luxurious high-rise. We had a corner king suite with a stunning view of the Needle. The rooms feature Hypnos beds (you won’t want to get out of them), modern bathrooms with separate rain showers, oversized European soaking tubs and Shoji screen doors, the largest vanity mirror you’ll ever see and iHome® docking stations with audio speakers. Their list of ecofriendly initiatives is lengthy and includes many great practices, but some of the more unique things I found were for only a small fee per night, guests can match the electricity use of 25 kilowatt hours for a one night’s stay in a guest room at the hotel. Guests who contribute additionally will support the generation of clean wind energy. The wind energy credits for this program are sourced from wind farms in Washington State and North Dakota. The PanEarth® program launched at the Pan Pacific Seattle and maintains the position of model property throughout the brand. They repurpose all amenities to the YWCA and unused soap is donated to the Clean the World program. It was also great to hear that all of their unpresented banquet food is donated to Food Lifeline in Seattle.

The Pan Pacific Seattle provides some fantastic dining options as well, with an inspired Pacific Northwest-centered menu featuring unique dishes with locally sourced offerings. What I found really convenient was their close proximity to a wide variety of shops and boutiques right in their own plaza. Head to Vida Spa for an Ayurvedic treatment customized to your individual Dosha. Pick up a treat for your favorite four-legged friend at Scraps Dog Bakery & Boutique. Just steps from the hotel, Whole Foods provides fresh, organic, and hardto-find gourmet items and unique gifts. Be Luminous specializes in power vinyasa yoga, offering a variety of complementary yoga styles for a well-rounded experience. Visit www.panpacific.com/seattle. We ended the day at a couple of great spots in downtown Seattle – Zig Zag café, which is a cute little bistro with a speakeasy feel and great cocktails and light fare. And then we happened upon Spur, a New American Gastropub that seamlessly brings fine dining cuisine into an approachable bar atmosphere. As the Chef’s experimental playground, Spur has garnered widespread recognition. Within a year of opening, the Chef Owners propelled the gastropub onto Food & Wine magazine’s coveted Go List of, “the most outstanding, must-visit restaurants in the world.” It wasn’t hard to see why with their excellent craft cocktails (try the Moonage Dream) and delicious food (don’t miss the tagliatelle with duck egg, oyster mushroom and pine nuts).

The next day started with a fantastic brunch at Café Flora in the Madison Park section of Seattle. Madison Park is a beautiful neighborhood packed with locally owned cafes, pubs, coffee and ice-cream shops, boutiques, and salons. Cafe Flora has carried its eco-conscious philosophy into its atrium, a charming garden retreat just off the main dining room. The garden atrium brings al-fresco dining to guests year round. Bathed in natural light, the space boasts exotic greenery, a bubbling central fountain and natural stone accents. The collective effect creates a warm, appealing and calming environment for guests. There is also a bar area with reclaimed wood accents using materials from local farms. You really feel like you’ve just entered a lush jungle for your dining experience. If you’re Vegan or Vegetarian, this is one place you can’t miss on your trip to Seattle. We tried their decadent cinnamon roll with maple toasted pecans which was unbelievably light and delicious. The vegan breakfast quesadilla was amazing with roasted yams, poblano peppers, corn & pepper jack cheese inside an egg battered flour tortilla and topped with snappy sauce. I loved the summer mushroom scramble which was eggs or seasoned tofu with king trumpet mushrooms, crimini mushroom duxelles, roasted red pepper, fresh basil, and goat cheese. Scrumptious! The Craving Cure

T

here are many myths which ask the question, “What does every woman, or man, want?” What do we all crave in this life? The answer the myth ultimately reveals is that we all want a life of our own, where we decide how we live and spend our lives’ time and not a life imposed upon us by the spell caste by a demon or the people in our lives telling us what to do. The sad part is that when we give up our healthy and true desires and cravings because of the desires and cravings of others we lose our lives and at the same time find that our cravings now become self-destructive and depersonalizing and are no longer life enhancing for us or the people in our lives because of what has been taken from us. When our relationship with life becomes unhealthy so does our relationship with food. One cannot separate one’s life from one’s desires. No matter what age this unhealthy change happens at, it leads to unhealthy cravings and addictions. Self-destruction replaces self-esteem and what we seek and crave are any foods that will give us the feelings we no longer can experience due to the absence of healthy and loving relationships. The development of our bodies and its receptors are literally changed by what we have lost. So we seek any artificial means of providing ourselves and our bodies with temporary relief from the losses we have experienced. People whose lives are being destroyed by unhealthy cravings are not stupid. They know what they are doing is not good for them

but they do not have the inspiration and determination necessary to be reborn and act as if they were the person they want to be. It is no accident that the term born again comes up so frequently in the lives of those who are awakened by addictions, diseases and disasters and find new meaning in their lives. You must be ready to show up for practice and rehearse being the person whom you have created as your new role model. It is crazy but people take better care of their pets than they do themselves. To do this you must trust yourself and your feelings and be ready to forgive yourself when you lose your way. You are each a work in progress and can always touch up or redo things if you do not create the work of art you intended. Now is the time to do what makes you happy and not what you think is the right thing to do. Feelings and heart wisdom need to be your guide. It is time to dump the guilt, shame and blame others have imposed upon you and move into faith, hope and love as your motivators. Start saying yes to yourself and no to the people and things you do not want to do. Simply doing something or accumulating material things will not make you a success but it will make you into a human doing. When you find happiness and meaning in your life you become a human being and a true success. It is never too late to re-parent yourself. For many, Dr. Bernard Siegel-or Bernie, as he prefers to becalledneeds no introduction. He has touched many lives all overthe Planet. In 1978, he reached a national and then international audience when he began talking about patient empowerment and the choice to live fully and die in peace. As a physician whohas cared for and counseled innumerable people whose mortality has been threatened by illness, Bernie embraces a philosophy of living and dying that stands at the forefront of the medical ethics and spiritual issues our Society grapples with today.
