Hey, I’m Dr. Diane!

Iloveto start a new year by taking some time to acknowledge everything I accomplished in the past year and celebrate my wins! I spend the last week of December and the first week of January thoughtfully examining where I am in my life and, more importantly, whether I am still passionate about where life has taken me.

This year, I’m excited about three major accomplishments:

1. I’d been having heart palpitations daily for the last year or so, and I’ve reduced these episodes to less than once a month

2. We had our second 10BEST Awards Gala at Farmington Gardens with an amazing awards ceremony, delicious food and drink, and a DJ and dancing. We had over 130 people attend dressed in Studio 54 attire, and it was such a blast!

3. I was able to turn my wakeboard, alternating which leg was in front and surf back and forth across the wake!

It’s the little things!

“Here are some of the questions I ask myself during my year review, and I hope you will take some time to ask these of yourself as well: What if I only had one year to live? What would I do?

What places would I visit? Who would I spend my time with? ”

Here are some of the questions I ask myself during my year review, and I hope you will take some time to ask these of yourself as well: What if I only had one year to live? What would I do? What places would I visit? Who would I spend my time with?

How many of you have contemplated these questions? In our crazy, busy, jam-packed lives, many of us are just going through the motions. Far too many people go through life without making any effort to truly live passionately…to get that fire in their soul for enjoying life and living it to the fullest. The worst tragedy in the world is the person who has lost his passion. How do you get your passion back? Spend a weekend, a month, a year identifying what you love— and then do it.

I hope this issue inspires you to chase your dream. After the last few years, I’ve realized—or I should say I’ve been reminded—that life is short. Don’t let fear stop you. Was I afraid to do some of the things I needed to do to accomplish what I listed above?

Heck yeah! But I stopped listening to those voices and I focused on one thing—the end result. You’ll be afraid—do it anyway. You’ll say you don’t have time— stop watching TV or scrolling social media.

You’ll worry about the money—you’d spend it on something else, trust me. The years will go by, whether you chase your dream or you don’t. And at the end, do you really want to be asking yourself, “What if?”

Wishing you health and happiness,

Our mission is to provide valuable insight, information, and resources that will allow our readers to maintain a healthy, active, sustainable lifestyle. Natural Nutmeg contains timely information on natural health, complementary and alternative medicine, nutrition, fitness, personal growth, green living, and the products and services that support a healthy lifestyle.

How Releasing Set Me Free

After my dad passed, I felt paralyzed by grief. A major musical performance was approaching, but I couldn’t imagine moving forward. Then, a longtime friend and fellow releaser called to check in and offered to guide me through a Releasing session. Though skeptical, I agreed.

During the process, I recognized a protective layer around my heart and let it go. My friend asked, “Is there any ‘wanting’ here?”

In Releasing, “wanting” refers to a sense of lack or resistance—our clinging to control, approval, or safety. When we identify and release this “wanting,” we shift from scarcity to abundance.

I realized I was desperately trying to control my grief, which overwhelmed me. But as I allowed myself to feel it fully, something shifted. The heavy sensations in my chest softened, and a profound sense of freedom emerged. In 35 minutes, I moved from being stuck in sorrow to experiencing inner peace.

Releasing is a gentle, somatically centered method for letting go of negative emotions, limiting beliefs, and mental patterns that block inner peace.

How it works:

• Recognize when you’re holding onto emotions, sensations, or thoughts.

• Accept those emotions and thoughts without judgment.

• Release them so they no longer control your thinking or actions.

This process fosters calm, focus, improved relationships, and overall well-being— a powerful way to reclaim your freedom.

Kristin Mozeiko, DMA, m.AmSTAT, is a certified Releasing coach and an experienced Alexander technique teacher. In each session, she guides her clients through deep somatic practices to maintain a sense of mind–body unity. Join my newsletter and discover more about Releasing and mind–body connection. Weight loss will always be a hot topic, and focusing on the nutritional aspects of healthy weight is critical to achieving real, lasting results. A holistic approach to healthy weight requires not just a scientific look into the patient’s physical health but also into their mental wellness—the mind–body connection is crucial to understanding how to achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

From dealing with the symptoms and side effects of menopause, looking for the perfect foods for their nutritional needs, and teaching patients to readjust their thinking toward food, holistic nutrition and weight loss is an individualized, patient-centered approach that allows patients and practitioners to work together to address the root issues and promote optimal wellness while working toward healthy weight goals.

During my second pregnancy, I developed dysautonomia and, after a year of suffering, was diagnosed with Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH). In addition to debilitating vertigo, painful migraines, neck pain, neuralgia, and neuropathy, I struggled with intermittent visual impairment that left me temporarily blinded whenever I became overly stressed. At first, I couldn’t find any conventional doctors to believe my symptoms were real, let alone help me, so I set out to help myself. I would spend hours listening to countless audiobooks and any symptom-free time was spent hungrily scouring research articles online.

After my diagnosis, I was incorrectly told I had two options: lose weight or risk permanent blindness—a daunting task for someone who struggled with weight fluctuations much of my life. I came to understand that hormone imbalances and poor gut health were root cause factors for my own weight struggles, and with that knowledge, I lost nearly 70 pounds. I went on to start a weight loss coaching business before realizing my weight was probably not the cause of my IIH but rather a condition called mast cell activation syndrome. Nevertheless, I am appreciative of the journey which culminated in the opening of Southington Holistic Health & Nutrition.

During my time as a weight loss coach, I ran into several difficult weight loss resistance cases, and I knew that, like me, they had root causes we weren’t seeing. That’s when I discovered functional diagnostic nutrition (FDN), a program that trains health coaches to read and interpret functional lab testing. I knew this could potentially make a big difference for those tough cases and started the certification

process. During that time, my young son became ill with some sort of mystery psychosis, and through my FDN advisors, I was able to discover he likely had a condition called PANS (pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome), caused by a gut infection. His healing journey helped me appreciate the importance of the gut-brain connection—not just as it relates to metabolism but to mental health as well.

The science now clearly indicates a connection between metabolism, mental health, and the microbiome; we’re just waiting for medicine to catch up. That’s where I come in—I serve people like me and my son who struggle to find comprehensive solutions in conventional care settings.

In addition to being the only in-person Complex Weight Management Coaching program in Connecticut, I also work with a lot of gut health concerns, and I have my unique Neuro-Nourish program. It’s a highly supportive program for people with neurological and nervous system-related concerns like POTS/dysautonomia, MCAS, migraines, ADD/ADHD, anxiety, depression, and fatigue, among others.

Southington Holistic Health & Nutrition is a comprehensive service that offers functional lab testing, drug-free protocols, and holistic health and nutrition coaching. Owned and operated by Bridget Orosz, a certified Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner and Holistic Health Coach whose unique skill set is centered on minerals, metabolism, mental health, and the microbiome.

Flexible Wellness

I’ve been where you are— obsessing over every detail of my health, restricting food, and depriving myself of fun in the pursuit of a perfect physique. But that obsession led to burnout and no real results. Through my own journey, I realized that wellness isn’t about extreme measures or constant restriction. It’s about finding balance, reducing stress, and nurturing your body to feel your best. Flexible Wellness was born from my own struggles of obsessing over my health and body. Now, I want to encourage and guide you in living a high-quality, fulfilled life with your wellness in mind.

Many of us live with the misconception that to be healthy, we must constantly deprive ourselves and push ourselves to the limit. But the truth is, this approach often leaves us feeling drained and disconnected from our bodies. That’s where I come in.

I’m Stephanie Fontano, a holistic lifestyle coach, intuitive nutritionist and trainer, host of the “Bliss Up” podcast, and founder of Flexible Wellness, with degrees in exercise science and nutrition and a focus on holistic healing. I offer a variety of online services, from private coaching to group programs, self-paced courses, and nutritional support, all designed to help you find your authentic self, feel lighter, and become your own healer.

And I’m not your average coach. My goal is to guide you through a sustainable path that aligns with this season of your life and helps you feel like your most vibrant, favorite self, so you have more energy, less stress, and can naturally heal yourself.

Imagine waking up each day feeling energized, centered, and empowered. No more chasing perfection—just embracing a lifestyle that works for you. It’s your turn to transform.

Monica Marcello, MS, RD, Founder and Lead Dietitian Dietitian Driven, LLC

Many of our patients come to us after feeling dismissed by traditional healthcare or stuck in an all-or-nothing mindset that leaves them frustrated and defeated. At Dietitian Driven, we take a holistic approach rooted in the intersection of science and psychology to address not just physical symptoms but also the mental barriers that often stand in the way of progress.

Our approach to health is uniquely Dietitian Driven, blending expert nutrition strategies with counseling to support the mind–body connection and foster long-term wellness. We are passionate about this work because we understand how stress and chronic conditions feed into each other—a continuous cycle where stress worsens symptoms, and those symptoms, in turn, heighten stress. Breaking this loop requires more than just nutrition advice; it demands a thoughtful, personalized strategy.

What truly sets us apart is our commitment to accessibility. Nutrition counseling shouldn’t be a privilege—it is a right. By working with insurance, we make it easy for patients to see us frequently, often at little to no cost, ensuring they have the consistent support they need to make real, lasting progress.

Our dietitians are experts in evidence-based nutrition, combining a strong foundation in science with counseling techniques like motivational interviewing and behavior change theories. This unique blend helps guide clients toward meaningful, sustainable changes that improve both their physical and emotional well-being. An excellent example of this—and one of the most rewarding experiences I have had as a business owner—was working with a patient who had struggled with IBS and ulcerative colitis for years. She came to us feeling completely defeated after countless appointments with no clear answers or relief. During one of our follow-ups, she broke down in tears— not from frustration, but from a sense of hope she hadn’t felt in years.

She shared how the relief she was beginning to experience, both physically and emotionally, had transformed her outlook. What struck me most was her realization that the feeling of hope was just as powerful as the symptom relief she was experiencing. Knowing that our work had given her not just tools for managing her symptoms but also a renewed sense of optimism about her future was profoundly moving. Moments like this remind me why I’m so passionate about making nutrition care accessible and effective for everyone who needs it.

Whether you’re breaking free from the stress-illness cycle, healing your relationship with food, or striving for sustainable health, our team is here to support you every step of the way with compassion, care, and expert guidance.

Geeta Sharma, DNP, NP-C Everest Diabetes and Weight Loss

I’m Geeta Sharma, DNP, NP-C, founder of Everest Diabetes and Weight Loss. Everest is an exclusive telehealth clinic created in 2023 to provide holistic, integrative treatment for medical weight loss, diabetes care, and nutrition counseling to individuals in Connecticut.

I earned my Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from Quinnipiac University in 2019 and completed my post-master’s certification in Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolism at Duke University in 2020. I am currently enrolled at The Institute of Functional Medicine. I believe in expanding knowledge and staying current with new, evidence-based information.

My passion for thetreatment of prediabetes, diabetes, and weight managementstarted early in my career. I was fortunate enough to take care of patients with diabetes and metabolic disorders in various settings. Unfortunately, by the time I was taking care of those patients, they were further in their disease process and appeared indifferent to changing their lifestyles. This is why I am motivated to help patients by intervening earlier in the disease process.

I have over a decade of experience as a nurse and nurse practitioner working in large organizations, including Yale, Trinity, and Baylor Scott and White. Often, these organizations emphasized getting patients in and out of the clinic as quickly as possible, treating only their symptoms rather than focusing on finding the root cause of their health issues. My frustration with “the system” led me to open my own practice, allowing me to offer personalized care and spend more time with my patients, providing the education and support they deserve. I use evidence-based approaches when treating my patients, including intermittent fasting, a low-carb, high-protein diet, portion control, and calorie restriction supplemented with weight loss medication education and personalized counseling.

I have seen firsthand my patients’ health transformations and improved quality of life. My typical patient struggles with weight management and often experiences symptoms including fatigue, low energy, hot flashes, fatty liver disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, prediabetes, or diabetes. For most of my patients, the root cause of these disease conditions or symptoms is obesity. After receiving my personalized care, including education and support, patients are able to lose weight, feel more energetic, manage their blood pressure and cholesterol, and prevent prediabetes or diabetes.

At Everest, we are committed to providing access to all individuals using a compassionate, nonjudgmental approach to care. Our mission at Everest is to empower individuals with the most up-to-date education and clinical care so they can take control of their health and be their own advocates.

8 Tips to Navigate Marketing for Small Business Owners in 2025

“As consumers become increasingly conscious of sustainability and social responsibility, small businesses must communicate their commitment to these values through marketing efforts. Highlighting environmentally friendly practices, ethical sourcing, and community initiatives can resonate with socially conscious consumers and contribute to a positive brand image.”

As we approach 2025, the marketing landscape for small businesses is rapidly evolving. With constant advancements in technology and shifting consumer behavior, it is essential for small business owners to adapt their marketing strategies to stay relevant and competitive. In this blog, we will explore some key insights and trends that small business owners should consider as they navigate the marketing landscape in 2025.

1. Embracing the Digital Shift

Digital transformation has been underway for years and continues to shape the marketing strategies of small businesses. As we enter 2025, an online presence is no longer optional—it’s imperative. Small business owners need to prioritize their digital footprint, encompassing a mobile-friendly website, active social media presence, and leveraging e-commerce platforms to reach a broader audience.

2. Personalization and Consumer Experience

In 2025, personalized marketing will be a game-changer for small businesses. Consumers are seeking more customized experiences, and businesses that can cater to their individual needs and preferences will stand out. Utilizing data analytics and customer relationship management tools will enable small business owners to tailor their marketing efforts and enhance the overall consumer experience.

3. Leveraging Artificial Intelligence and Automation

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and automation into marketing strategies will allow small businesses to streamline processes and operate more efficiently. AI-driven analytics can provide valuable insights into consumer behavior, enabling businesses to make data-driven decisions. Automation tools can streamline repetitive tasks, so small business owners can focus on more strategic aspects of their marketing efforts.

4. Video Content Dominance

Video content will continue to dominate the marketing sphere in 2025. Small business owners should invest in creating engaging and authentic video content to connect with their audience. Whether through social media platforms, email marketing, or website integration, video content has the power to capture attention and convey brand messages effectively.

5. Sustainability and Social Responsibility

As consumers become increasingly conscious of sustainability and social responsibility, small businesses must communicate their commitment to these values. Highlighting environmentally friendly practices, ethical sourcing, and community initiatives resonates with socially conscious consumers and contributes to a positive brand image.

6. Influencer Collaboration

Influencer marketing is projected to continue its momentum in 2025, especially for small businesses looking to expand their reach. Collaborating with relevant influencers can help small business owners tap into new audiences and build credibility for their brand. Authentic partnerships with influencers who align with their brand values can yield significant returns.

7. Community Engagement and Local SEO

Community engagement and local search engine optimization (SEO) will be critical for small businesses in 2025. Establishing a strong local presence, participating in community events, and optimizing local SEO to appear in relevant search results can drive foot traffic and create a loyal customer base within the community.

8. Agile and Adaptive Marketing

The marketing landscape is dynamic, and small businesses need to adopt agile and adaptive marketing practices to stay responsive to changes in consumer behavior and industry trends. Flexibility and the ability to pivot marketing strategies based on real-time feedback will be instrumental in staying competitive and relevant.

As small business owners gear up for 2025, the ever-evolving marketing landscape will demand a strategic blend of digital prowess, consumercentric approaches, technological integration, and a strong emphasis on authenticity and community. Embracing these trends and insights will empower small businesses to navigate the marketing terrain successfully and position themselves for growth and sustainability in the years ahead.

The Noise in Your Closet

“Every day, without fail, you must get dressed. It may be one of the first decisions you make each morning. As this process unfolds, it can be one of ease and

flow or one of stress and frustration. Regardless, this process reflects the relationship you have with the items in your closet.”

—Mary Carangelo, MS

Yourcloset is a personal space that reflects who you are. The clothes hanging there tell a story—your story. It whispers details about your style, showcasing your choice of patterns, love of solids, or your fascination with rhinestones and sequins. These items give a glimpse into your past, reflected by the college sweatshirts and concert T-shirts you can’t bear to part with.

Clothes can also give us a glimpse of your future—clothes you purchased in hopes of fitting into one day or outfits you plan to wear in the future for a special occasion or vacation. Most importantly, they tell a story of who you are today and how you like to express yourself.

The Stress of Getting Dressed

One thing is certain: every day, without fail, you must get dressed. It may be one of the first decisions you make each morning. As this process unfolds, it can be one of ease and flow or one of stress and frustration. Regardless, this process reflects the relationship you have with the items in your closet.

Here is just one example of what may happen as you get dressed each morning:

You think about the weather, who you’re meeting, and what is on your agenda for the day. As you start selecting items from your closet, that little voice starts whispering in your ear.

A running commentary begins to send messages that scroll through your brain while you view the choices presented.

As you view the hanging clothes one by one, the noise might sound something like this:

“The blue in this blouse looks great with my eyes, but it’s too tight across my back.”

“Oh, I love the feel of this material, but it just doesn’t hang right.”

“This makes me look too fat, it’s too boxy.”

“I love this top; I wish I had something that went with it.”

“Sleeves are too short.”

“Sleeves are too long.”

“Oh, I forgot this was pilled…I need to remember to get a pill shaver.”

“I don’t think this even fits anymore.”

“I love this skirt, but I never wear it.”

“Can I even get away with wearing this at my age?”

And an old favorite:

“What was I thinking?!”

The irony of all this is that you purchased each of these items and placed them in your closet. Not only did you put them there, but you are keeping them, even though they may not fit, are damaged, or go with none of your other clothes. You are standing in that space, surrounded by clothes, frustrated because you have absolutely nothing to wear!

Rest assured, you are not alone in this journey. I, too, have fallen into this trap, and it takes a plan with a purpose to clear out those items that no longer serve us.

Fit, Feel, and Function

You may be asking, “How do I develop a plan with a purpose? ” Consider doing a closet audit using the three Fs.

• Fit: Try every garment on. Pay attention to fit. Where do the seams hit your shoulders? Are the pants the correct length? Are there any areas that are hugging you in unflattering ways?

• Feel: How does the fabric feel? What is the itch factor? Pay attention to the texture and feel of the garment against your skin. Is the fabric buttery or stiff as you move?

• Function: Where and how often will you wear this piece? Think about how often you reach for this item. Is it in alignment with who you are today? Your size and lifestyle?

Tips and Tricks

Once you have audited your closet, try these tips and tricks.

• Buy matching hangers that have hooks that turn 360 degrees.

• Organize according to style, then color.

• Put a reed diffuser in your closet to make it smell amazing. You can repurpose perfumes that may not smell nice on you but would be a welcome aroma among your clothes. Place reeds in the opening and treat them as you would a diffuser, rotating reeds as they dry out.

• Paint or wallpaper the inside of your closet to make it visually appealing.

• Use your wall space to hang a towel rack and S-hooks to hang jeans or accessories. Start your new year with an organized closet— one that invites you in and presents clothes that all fit and make you feel fantastic. most people think of red light therapy, they picture a wellness tool for improving skin health or easing aches and pains. While these benefits are well-known, many are surprised to learn that medical-grade red light therapy can also effectively support fat loss. This innovative therapy goes beyond surface-level benefits, offering a safe and natural way to achieve fat loss while enhancing overall health and well-being.

What Is Red Light Therapy?

Red light therapy (RLT), also referred to as Low-level laser therapy (LLLT), uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to penetrate the skin and stimulate mitochondria, the energy-producing centers of cells, to work more efficiently. With increased energy, cells repair and regenerate faster, helping the body’s natural processes function more effectively. In addition to promoting cellular energy, red light stimulates circulation and oxygen delivery. This boost in cellular performance lays the foundation for RLT’s fat-loss capabilities.

Fat Loss with RLT: The Untold Benefit

When applied at medical-grade intensity, red and near-infrared light penetrates deep into the skin, reaching the fat layers beneath. The light interacts with fat cells, prompting a chemical reaction that makes their membranes more permeable. This reaction allows the stored contents— fatty acids, glycerol, and water—to escape. Once released, these contents are carried away by the lymphatic system and metabolized as energy.

This process not only reduces the size of fat cells but also improves body composition by decreasing overall fat percentages. As fat cells shrink, clients often experience a noticeable reduction in targeted areas like the abdomen, thighs, and arms. This therapy also helps improve metabolism and muscle tone, contributing to long-term weight management.

Red light therapy offers a noninvasive and painless solution for those who have struggled to lose body fat through traditional diet and exercise. This treatment works with the body’s natural systems to flush unwanted fat and toxins while enhancing cellular function. In simple terms, RLT helps break down fat and detoxify the body, allowing for weight loss while improving overall health and energy levels.

What Sets Medical-Grade Red Light Therapy Apart?

Home-use devices are increasingly common, but they don’t compare to the power and precision of medical-grade systems. Home devices often lack the higher-intensity light and specific wavelengths necessary for deep penetration into fat layers. To effectively disrupt fat cells, light must penetrate two to three inches below the skin’s surface— something at-home systems cannot achieve. Medical-grade red light therapy delivers precise wavelengths and intensity levels, ensuring effective fat loss. Larger treatment areas also mean more comprehensive results, and sessions can be tailored to individual needs and goals. While home devices can be useful for mood support and skin repair, they fall short of delivering the kind of fatloss benefits achieved in professional settings.

Why Choose RLT for Fat Loss?

With so many weight-loss options available— ranging from restrictive diets to invasive procedures like liposuction—red light therapy stands out as a gentle, noninvasive alternative. Many traditional methods can be expensive, painful, or require significant recovery time. Others, like fad diets or extreme exercise regimens, are unsustainable and often lead to burnout.

Red light therapy, by contrast, is a relaxing, and enjoyable experience. Sessions typically last as little as twenty minutes and involve no discomfort or downtime. Because it works with the body’s

natural processes, RLT not only helps reduce fat but also provides additional wellness benefits, making it a holistic approach to health.

More Than Just Fat Loss

While fat loss is a standout benefit of red light therapy, its positive effects extend far beyond body contouring. Red light therapy helps reduce pain and inflammation, increase circulation, support muscle recovery, and improve joint mobility, making it a valuable tool for those dealing with chronic pain or those recovering from injuries.

RLT also promotes better sleep, reduces stress, and improves mood. Other benefits include:

• Enhanced cognitive function

• Improved hormone balance

• Hair regrowth

• Better gut health and digestion

• Reduced headaches and migraines

• Healthier vision and eye function

These added perks make RLT a comprehensive wellness treatment benefitting both body and mind and a great addition to any self-care routine.

A Local Resource for Fat Loss and Wellness

In our community, medical-grade red light therapy is now an accessible, trusted option for those looking to lose body fat and improve their overall health. Whether you are just starting your weightloss journey or looking for a way to address stubborn areas that don’t respond to diet and exercise, RLT offers a natural, noninvasive solution.

This versatile therapy helps individuals feel better, move more comfortably, and age with greater confidence. By addressing not only fat loss but also other aspects of wellness, red light therapy supports a healthier, more balanced lifestyle.

If you have been curious about red light therapy, it is time to explore its potential. With its proven safety and effectiveness, medical-grade RLT could be the key to unlocking your health and fitness goals.

Your 2025 HighPerformance Protocol: 5 Pillars for Optimal Self-Care

Creating a personalized and intentional high-performance self-care protocol in our fast-paced, ever-evolving world is the foundation for success, fulfillment, and happiness.

“The DRESS framework—diet, rest, exercise, stress relief, and supplementation— offers a practical way to build your protocol and align routines with your priorities for productivity and balance.”
—Christine Bilotti Peterson

As a thirty-year high-performance coach, I have found that success stems from a foundation of mental, physical, and emotional strength, clear alignment with personal and professional goals, driven by purpose, and high-performance techniques such as emotional regulation, mindset mastery, and strategic time management.

The DRESS framework—diet, rest, exercise, stress relief, and supplementation—offers a practical way to build your protocol and align routines with your priorities for productivity and balance.

1. Diet: Fuel Your Body with Intention

A high-performance diet supports energy, focus, and health. Prioritize whole, nutrient-dense foods like lean proteins, healthy fats, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Hydration is key; aim for half your body weight in ounces daily.

Examples:

• Breakfast: Spinach, avocado, chia seeds, and protein smoothie.

• Lunch: Quinoa salad with grilled chicken and mixed greens.

• Snack: Raw almonds and an apple.

• Dinner: Salmon with roasted sweet potatoes and broccoli.

Tip: Meal prep on weekends to save time and ensure you have healthy options. Prepare proteins on Sunday to create quick, balanced meals throughout the week.

2. Rest: Prioritize Sleep and Recovery

Quality sleep is critical for high performance. Aim for seven to nine hours nightly and include mental and physical downtime in your routine.

Examples:

• A calming bedtime routine, like reading, meditation, or a warm bath.

• A consistent sleep schedule, even on weekends.

• No screens at least an hour before bed.

Tip: Use sleep trackers, upgrade your bedding, or try weighted blankets to improve sleep quality.

3. Exercise: Move Your Body with Purpose

Regular physical activity boosts energy, mood, and health. Include a mix of cardio, strength training, and mobility exercises tailored to your fitness level and wellness goals.

Examples:

• Cardio: Brisk walking, jogging, or cycling four to five times weekly.

• Strength training: Bodyweight or weightlifting exercises two to three times weekly.

• Flexibility: Stretching or yoga to improve mobility and reduce tension.

Tip: Schedule workouts as non-negotiable appointments in your calendar. Plan your weekly routine each Sunday to stay consistent.

4. Stress Relief: Manage and Mitigate Stress

Chronic stress impacts performance, health, and happiness. Daily stress-relief practices help build resilience, mental clarity, and optimism.

Examples:

• Practice mindfulness or meditation for ten minutes each morning, preferably outdoors.

• Take breaks to breathe deeply or go for a walk.

• Process emotions through journaling or conversations with a coach, therapist, or trusted friend.

• Engage in joyful hobbies or community work.

Tip: Techniques like EFT tapping or breathwork can provide quick relief during stressful moments.

5. Supplementation:

Support Your Body’s Needs

Supplements can fill nutritional gaps and enhance health. Consult a healthcare provider or wellness coach to find what’s right for you. Examples:

• Multivitamins for essential nutrients.

• Omega-3 fatty acids for brain and heart health.

• Magnesium for relaxation and sleep.

• Vitamin D for limited sun exposure.

• Advanced supplements to improve cellular health, like NAD or natural GLP-1.

• Tip: Set daily reminders to take supplements consistently.

Mastering Time Management:

Plan Your 168 Hours

Everyone has the same 168 hours weekly. Effective time management ensures your selfcare protocol fits seamlessly into your life. Some helpful steps you can take include:

1. Identify Priorities: List top goals and commitments like work, health, and personal growth.

2. Block Time: Allocate specific slots for self-care, work, and leisure. Treat self-care as essential.

3. Color-Code Your Calendar : Assign colors for categories like health, work, family, and fun.

4. Audit Weekly: Reflect on time use and adjust to stay aligned with your goals. Example schedule:

• Exercise: 7:00 a.m.–7:30 a.m. (Monday–Friday)

• Meal Prep: Two hours on Sunday

• Meditation: Ten minutes before bed daily Now is the perfect time to create your plan. Evaluate your habits, set 2025 goals, and make small, consistent changes to enhance your health and performance. Create a Gatekeeper for Your Brain:

Transform Your Life by Transforming Your Thinking

W“Negative thought loops, like “I’m not good enough” or “Nothing ever works out for me,” strengthen neural pathways associated with self-doubt and fear. But it also works on the flip side—positive, empowering thoughts can create new pathways, fostering confidence and optimism.”

—Sean

Macauley, LMFT

hat if the key to changing your life wasn’t a massive external overhaul but a profound internal shift in how you think and what thoughts you choose to attach to? Human optimization and mental health experts agree: Your thoughts shape your reality. This isn’t just self-help rhetoric or an Instagram fad; it’s rooted in neuroscience and psychology. By changing your thinking patterns and choosing which thoughts to give merit to, you can unlock new levels of purpose, productivity, resilience, and emotional well-being.

The Science of Thought: A Fundamental Process to Understanding

Your brain is a master storyteller. Every day, it processes thousands of thoughts, constructing narratives that shape how you perceive yourself, others, and the world around you. These narratives influence everything from decision-making to stress responses.

At the core of this process lies neuroplasticity— your brain’s ability to rewire itself based on new experiences and repeated thought patterns. Negative thought loops, like “I’m not good enough” or “Nothing ever works out for me,” strengthen neural pathways associated with self-doubt and fear. But the reverse is also true—positive, empowering thoughts can create new pathways, fostering confidence and optimism. This works even if you have not yet come to full belief in it; it is about repetition and frequency.

Understanding this makes it clear why changing your thoughts isn’t just about “thinking happy thoughts.” It’s about optimizing your mental programming to work for you, not against you.

Mindset Shifts for Human Optimization

• Adopt a Growth Mindset: A growth mindset, coined by psychologist Carol Dweck, is the belief that abilities and intelligence can be developed through effort and learning. Instead of seeing failures as evidence of inadequacy, view them as opportunities for growth. A

growth mindset reframes challenges, reducing anxiety and promoting persistence. For example, replace “I’m terrible at this” with “I’m learning and improving.”

• Shift from Scarcity to Abundance: A scarcity mindset fixates on what’s lacking—time, money, and opportunities—while an abundance mindset focuses on possibilities and gratitude. Research shows gratitude practices can rewire your brain to notice and appreciate positives, increasing joy and reducing stress. Practice: Start each day by listing three things you’re grateful for. Gratitude is the antidote to scarcity mindset.

• Replace Rumination with Solution-Oriented Thinking: Dwelling on problems magnifies stress and keeps you stuck. Instead, channel your mental energy into actionable solutions. Ask yourself, “What’s one small step I can take toward resolving this?” Find choice in relation to negative thought patterns.

The Mental Health Connection

Changing your thinking doesn’t just boost productivity; it’s a cornerstone of mental health. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), one of the most effective treatments for anxiety and depression, is built on this principle. By identifying and challenging distorted thought patterns, CBT helps individuals reframe their perspective, reducing emotional distress.

For example, if you often think, “I always mess things up,” CBT encourages you to examine the evidence. Have you always failed? Probably not. Recognizing the inaccuracy of this thought weakens its grip, allowing you to replace it with a more balanced perspective. You reframe from trying to figure out right and wrong to determining the accuracy of your experience.

Similarly, mindfulness practices help you observe your thoughts without judgment. This meta-awareness allows you to break free from automatic, negative loops and consciously choose thoughts that align with your goals or values.

Strategies to Rewire Your Thinking

• Daily Affirmations: Positive affirmations like “I am capable” or “I am worthy of success” may feel awkward initially, but repeated affirmations strengthen new neural pathways. Write them down, say them aloud, or incorporate them into your morning routine.

• Journaling for Clarity: Writing your thoughts helps identify patterns and triggers. Regular journaling provides insight into your inner dialogue and helps you consciously shift it.

• Visualization Techniques: Athletes and high performers often use visualization to prepare mentally for success. Imagine yourself overcoming challenges or achieving goals. This primes your brain for real-life execution.

• Surround Yourself with Growth-Oriented People: Environment plays a crucial role in shaping our thoughts. Seek relationships that inspire and challenge you positively. Supportive individuals can lead to empowering perspectives.

• Mindfulness Meditation: A daily meditation practice strengthens your ability to observe thoughts without reacting to them.

• Small Shifts, Big Results: You don’t need to overhaul your entire mindset in one go. Focus on one thought pattern at a time and celebrate each small victory.

Rewiring your thinking is not an overnight process. It requires consistency and patience. However, the rewards—improved mental health, greater resilience, and optimized performance—are worth the effort.

When you change your thinking, you don’t just change your mind—you change your life. By embracing the power of neuroplasticity and intentionally shaping your mental habits, you unlock a version of yourself equipped to thrive. The journey might be challenging, but the destination is a healthier, more joyful, optimized you.

Make It Happen!

You are worthy! Take the first step today. What’s one thought you can reframe to align with your goals for tomorrow?

Wherever you are on this path, there’s always a way forward. Our goals at Imagine Float are to provide you with our gentle, clientproven services designed to work in harmony with your body, helping you achieve meaningful and lasting results.

Advanced Body Contouring: EmSculpt Neo

EmSculpt Neo is an FDA-approved treatment that works alongside the progress you are already making on your weight loss journey. Whether you’re focusing on dietary changes, increasing your workouts, or exploring other tools like Ozempic, this noninvasive service offers additional support to help you move closer to your goals.

By combining high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) technology with radiofrequency energy, EmSculpt Neo helps build muscle and reduce fat in ways that complement and enhance your existing efforts.

During each session, you will experience the equivalent of twenty thousand muscle contractions—effortlessly. There is no downtime, no recovery period, and no disruption to your routine. The treatment specifically targets large muscle groups that tend to be stubborn areas that are often resistant to diet and exercise, preserving and building lean muscle while safely breaking down fat deposits.

By integrating EmSculpt Neo into your wellness plan, you can amplify the changes you’re already making, creating a powerful synergy that supports sustainable, long-term results.

Precision Fat Reduction:

Cryo Body Sculpting

Cryo Body Sculpting offers a gentle, effective way to tackle those stubborn areas that diet and exercise alone may not address. It works by cooling fat cells, which are more sensitive to cold than surrounding tissues, allowing your body to naturally break them down over time without affecting your skin or muscles.

This therapy is noninvasive and requires no downtime, making it a practical option even if you have a packed schedule. Whether you’re focused on slimming your abdomen, thighs, arms, neck, or another area, Cryo Body Sculpting is a thoughtful addition to your weight loss journey—designed to support your body’s natural processes and help you feel more confident in your progress.

Lymphatic Optimization: Ballancer® Pro

The lymphatic system is a key player in your body’s overall health, quietly supporting detoxification, immune function, and metabolism. Our Ballancer Pro therapy provides a gentle, relaxing way to give this often-overlooked system the attention it deserves, helping your body naturally eliminate waste and reduce water retention. By improving circulation and addressing bloating, Ballancer Pro can make a meaningful difference in how you feel day-to-day. It’s an effective way to support your weight loss journey while also enhancing your overall wellness, leaving you feeling balanced, refreshed, and ready to take on whatever comes next.

A Holistic Approach to Supporting Your Weight Loss Journey

Weight loss is about more than just physical transformation—it’s about creating balance in both your body and mind. While our core weight loss services, like EmSculpt Neo, Cryo Body Sculpting, and Ballancer Pro, provide targeted and impactful results, many people find additional support and benefits from incorporating tools like float therapy, the infrared sauna, or BrainTap into their routine.

Float therapy offers a deeply relaxing experience that allows your muscles to fully recover, whether you’ve just completed an intense workout or are simply decompressing from a busy day. It also helps lower stress and cortisol levels, which can often be barriers to weight loss progress. The infrared sauna provides another layer of support, with gentle heat that boosts your metabolism, encourages detoxification, and soothes sore muscles—all while promoting overall circulation and recovery.

For those moments when staying focused or motivated feels especially challenging, BrainTap can make a meaningful difference. By guiding you through mindfulness practices, it reduces stress, improves focus, and helps create the positive mindset that’s so critical for long-term success. These services are not a one-size-fits-all solution, nor are they intended to replace more targeted weight loss treatments. Instead, they work together to enhance your results and provide a supportive foundation for your journey.

As you continue losing weight, you may find that your goals shift, you want to do more, or you may even have a setback. That’s can sometimes be expected, and that’s okay. Our approach is flexible and evolves with your life, ensuring you are supported every step of the way.

You might start your weight loss journey with Cryo Body Sculpting to tackle a trouble spot and help you see results faster. Then, you incorporate float sessions to recover from new workouts. As you progress, adding EmSculpt Neo to build strength and refine your results will help you reach that next level. With every milestone, your plan evolves to meet your changing needs. Your journey to better health is unique and ever-changing, just like every aspect of your life. At Imagine Float, we combine innovative therapies with a thoughtful, holistic approach to help you navigate your weight loss goals in a way that feels natural and supportive. Simple Tips for Weight Loss

“My

favorite sweetener to use is allulose, a naturally occurring sugar found in figs, raisins, and some other fruits. Unlike some other sweeteners, allulose does not have a strange aftertaste—it tastes just like sugar and bakes like sugar ... and it is suitable for those with diabetes.”

—Kristina

Mozzicato, LMT, BCTMB

It’s that time of year again—many of us have New Year’s resolutions that may include weight loss goals. Semaglutide medications such as Ozempic and Wegovy have been steadily increasing in popularity, but these present a host of possible side effects, including stomach paralysis, blindness, and “Ozempic face,” which refers to the gaunt, hollow appearance, saggy and wrinkled skin, and sunken eyes that may be experienced when using these products.

There are alternatives to these medications and their possible side effects, of course. Besides increasing physical activity and getting enough sleep, there are simple, healthy alternatives to losing weight. Making small changes every day can result in slow but steady weight loss.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has several health benefits and has been used for centuries for various ailments. According to studies, adding one to two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to a glass of water on a daily basis can help reduce body fat percentage and belly fat, as well as decrease triglycerides in your blood. As an added bonus, ACV aids in digestion by increasing the hydrochloric acid (HCl) in the stomach’s gastric acid,

helping with digestion and immunity. It is important to choose raw, unfiltered, organic apple cider vinegar for maximum benefits.

L-Carnitine

L-carnitine is an amino acid produced by the body and is present in some foods (such as meat and dairy products) and in supplement form. According to several studies, L-carnitine supplementation significantly reduced body weight, body mass index (BMI), and fat mass. This amino acid is best taken in the morning on an empty stomach. It helps break down calories by transporting fatty acids into the mitochondria, where fat is burned. L-carnitine helps to restrict the accumulation of fat around the liver and the heart. In addition to suppressing appetite, it can help increase your energy.

Reducing or Eliminating Sugar

Sugar turns into fat in our bodies, so reducing or eliminating sugar is ideal. There are some healthy plant-based sugar substitutes. Stevia is probably the most widely known. If its taste does not agree with you, there are other options. Monk fruit is an all-natural sweetener that can be found in most grocery stores. Its scientific name is lo han guo,

a small round fruit native to China. Monk fruit is 100–250 times sweeter than sugar, so only a small amount is needed. It is a low-calorie sweetener that is suitable for diabetics. However, many brands of monk fruit sweetener also contain erythritol, which is a type of sugar alcohol. This can cause digestive upset in some people.

My favorite sweetener to use is allulose, a naturally occurring sugar found in figs, raisins, and some other fruits. Unlike some other sweeteners, allulose does not have a strange aftertaste. It tastes just like sugar and bakes like sugar. The few carbohydrates it contains can be subtracted from the total carb count, and it is suitable for those with diabetes. Allulose is available in granulated, confectioners (powdered), brown, and liquid varieties.

Specific Types of Diets Can Help, Too

Intermittent fasting is an effective method that involves time-restrictive eating. An effective schedule is to fast for sixteen to eighteen hours a day and consume two meals in a six- to eight-hour window. This method can help reduce insulin resistance and fasting glucose and blood sugar levels, which can benefit people with diabetes and high blood pressure. Intermittent fasting is also great for increasing growth hormone, which helps support skeletal muscle and help with weight loss.

Eating a diet low in carbohydrates can certainly help with weight loss. This includes limiting or eliminating grains, nuts, dairy, starchy vegetables, bread, and pasta. A low-carb diet consists of fifty grams of carbs or fewer each day, while a ketogenic diet is typically twenty grams of carbs or fewer each day. A keto diet also focuses on higher protein and moderate fat consumption while eliminating grains and starches.

Another option is the carnivore diet, which is generally considered to include five grams or fewer of carbohydrates daily and consists primarily of animal protein and eggs. Many low-carb substitutes for favorite foods, such as pasta, exist. Many “copycat” sugar-free and low-carb recipes exist for popular desserts and other dishes.

Incorporating these simple tips can help you in your weight loss journey. As always, consult your healthcare practitioner before making any changes to your diet.

regain their appetite and revert to previous eating habits, having never addressed the underlying lifestyle factors that contributed to their original weight gain.

Common digestive complaints include nausea, vomiting, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, heartburn, reflux, and stomach pain. Less common but definitively correlated with semaglutides is a form of stomach paralysis and intestinal blockage. In addition, this class of drugs carries an increased risk of muscle loss, lowered bone density, and thyroid cancer. One of my patient’s friends, a young mother, was using Ozempic to lose weight and lost her life to an intestinal blockage. These risks should not be taken lightly.

Natural Alternatives to Simpler Weight Loss

If you have been reading my articles over time, you may have noticed that most reflect my focus on gut health, an anti-inflammatory diet and lifestyle, and modulating the microbiome with specific strains of probiotics to achieve specific health goals. This also applies to weight loss.

When the gut biome is disrupted, it can lead to weight gain and other health issues. Conversely, correcting the gut biome plays a significant role in weight management and overall health.

Specific probiotic strains have been studied for their potential role in promoting weight loss, and several strains have shown a high correlation with successful slimming (see the table). It is important to note that the effects of probiotics on weight loss can vary depending on individual factors such as diet, lifestyle, and the amount of inflammation in the body. In my practice, I typically address food sensitivities and lifestyle first as anti-inflammatory interventions to ensure a good foundation for losing weight and keeping it off.

Probiotic Strains and Natural Supplements That Promote Weight Loss

Once a stable foundation has been laid, it’s time to “prime” the organs of elimination to ensure weight loss that increases health and vitality in the process—a side benefit, if you will. I typically address the gut-brain and gut–liver axes by working with specific probiotic strains that have been studied for their potential role in promoting weight loss.

Several strains have shown a high correlation with successful slimming. The first two discussed here have been studied specifically for their effects on GLP-1 receptors. These are how we can naturally obtain the benefits of semaglutides without their very real risk profile.

Berberine

Nutritional Support for Weight Loss

Phytonutrient with blood sugar regulating effects similar to GLP-1, promotes weight loss.

Chromium

Cinnamon

Mineral that promotes insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism to support weight loss.

Tea

Improves insulin sensitivity and reduces blood sugar, beneficial for weight management.

Contains catechins, shown to increase GLP-1 to enhance metabolism and break down of fat.

Herb that helps regulate blood sugar and improves insulin sensitivity.

Probiotic Strains for Weight Loss

Bifidobacterium lactis BPL1

Helps shift body composition toward fat loss, improves glucose metabolism, reduces inflammation.

Lactobacillus plantarum DR7

Lactobacillus gasseri

Associated with weight reduction, fat loss, and waist circumference. Reduces inflammation.

Akkermansia muciniphila

Studies show it reduces abdominal fat and inflammation, and improves insulin sensitivity.

Improves gut integrity, reduces inflammation, enhances insulin sensitivity, GLP-1 production.

Green
Fenugreek

“Semaglutides are associated with a long list of potential digestive side effects, including nausea, vomiting, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, heartburn, reflux, stomach pain, and even a form of stomach paralysis and intestinal blockage. In addition, they carry a risk of muscle loss, lowered bone density, and an increased risk of thyroid cancer. These risks should not be taken lightly.”

—Dr. Dana Lapointe, ND, LMT, Esth, CHt, CMWC

•Akkermansia muciniphila helps shift body composition toward fat loss, improves glucose metabolism, and reduces inflammation. Akkermansia is specifically associated with improved gut barrier integrity and enhanced insulin sensitivity, which contributes to the regulation of GLP-1 production, like the action of semaglutides, but in a gentler way that complements natural function and enhances overall homeostasis.

•Lactobacillus gasseri has been shown to reduce abdominal fat and inflammation and improve insulin sensitivity in obese people by regulating GLP-1 levels, pointing to its potential for preventing and even treating type 2 diabetes.

The next two strains are also associated with fat loss but through slightly different mechanisms.

•Lactobacillus plantarum DR7 is associated with reduced body weight, fat percentage, and waist circumference in some studies. It was also found to modulate the serotonin and dopamine pathways in adults, reducing feelings of stress and anxiety and improving cognition and memory. These effects suggest that DR7 could be beneficial for mental health, and I have used it successfully to help patients manage emotional eating. The funny thing about this one is that it can be given as a postbiotic (killed, not live) and works just as well, or better than, the active bacteria.

• Bifidobacterium lactis BPL1 also helps shift the body composition toward fat loss, improves glucose metabolism, and reduces inflammation. The fat-reducing properties of BPL1 were attributed to its lipoteichoic acid, which acts through the IGF-1 pathway,* suggesting therapeutic use in metabolic syndrome and diabetes-related disorders.

There are also several natural supplements that have been studied specifically for their modulatory effects on GLP-1 expression and secretion and, therefore, their ability to enhance the effects of GLP-1 in the body. Let’s talk about some of them.

• Berberine is found in many plants, including European barberry, Oregon grape root, goldenseal, and goldthread. It is a phytonutrient with blood sugar-regulating effects similar to GLP-1 and promotes weight loss.

• Green tea contains catechins, shown to increase GLP-1 toward enhancing metabolism and the breakdown of fat, and can be especially effective when combined with L-carnitine.

• Chromium is an essential nutrient involved in the regulation of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. It promotes insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism and is commonly used by naturopaths for blood sugar regulation. It also supports weight loss. In addition to its effects on glucose, insulin, and lipid metabolism, chromium has been reported to increase lean body mass and decrease body fat percentage.

• Cinnamon is known to improve insulin sensitivity and reduce blood sugar, both beneficial actions for diabetes and weight management. Likewise, fenugreek is an herb that helps regulate blood sugar and improves insulin sensitivity.

A gut health specialist can help you determine which probiotic strains will work best for you. They can also help you pinpoint other herbal and nutritional supplements and target specific diet and lifestyle factors to safely enhance the GLP-1 effects you are looking for.

Although the actions of natural GLP-1 agonists are milder than their pharmaceutical counterparts and require a well-rounded approach, the holistic path avoids harmful side effects and holds the promise of improved health and wellness in the long run.

*IGF-1, or Insulin-like growth factor 1, is a hormone similar to insulin, plays an important role in childhood growth, and has anabolic effects in adults.

A Coach, a Plant, and a Purpose

Asthe seasons change, so do we. This time of year offers a chance to check in on our own rhythms and set intentions. It can be an opportunity to reset your health, organize your home, prioritize relationships, and more. The support of a coach can make all the difference in creating a life filled with true purpose and joy. A coach can help you dig deeper within yourself to discover your desires and identify the steps to making them a reality.

Coaches can help you get out of your comfort zone and grow in a way that impacts every aspect of your life. During the initial session, big questions can lead to deep answers, creating a safe space for people to explore what they truly want. Sometimes, a coach can be the only one who does not have an attachment to someone’s life path. Coaches are there to listen, cocreate a plan, and hold you accountable for the time it takes it to manifest.

Benefits of Hiring a Life Coach

• Navigate and resolve conflict. Conflict resolution is a skill we may not learn in school or from our family. When people have the tools needed to navigate conflict, they can feel a greater sense of inner peace and connection. Learning when and how to repair after someone has been hurt can change workplace environments and entire families in positive ways.

• Learn how to have conversations that deepen intimacy with others. Knowing when and how to ask someone you care about to talk about things that may be hard is crucial for intimacy, yet many of us still avoid difficult conversations.

• Stretch yourself and your actions beyond your comfort zone. Nothing we really want is in our comfort zone. As humans, we must stretch to truly reach the things we desire. A coach can help make it less scary to step into growth.

• Frame powerful questions that evoke leadership. Leading others is a skill set that can always be polished. Whether you are leading a work team, a family, or an organization. Learning how to lead with your heart can bring out the best in your team.

• Create accountability. Knowing what you want is one thing; having the accountability to follow through is another. Hiring a coach who is invested in what you are creating can make all the difference. Coaches can hold onto your vision and gently guide you back to what you truly want.

As life has become faster-paced and more complex, people have become action-oriented. We are results-driven, valuing doing over being. Learning how to slow down and get back to being is vital. Being with ourselves, our thoughts, in nature, and in sync with our own internal rhythms. Combining plant allies via aromatherapy with coaching can be an amazing catalyst for change; it can help people shift into a new paradigm even more quickly. Blue chamomile can serve to help open the throat to express what they have been holding back. Roots such as ginger and vetiver help to stay grounded even though life may be challenging. People who are starting over or trying something new may benefit from seeds, such as carrot seeds or cardamom pods.

Aromatherapy can also help people connect to an energy they want more of in their lives. Meditating with a scent can help people to connect to that part of themselves. The rind of citrus can be used to feel safe and protected.

As our society deals with new levels of stress in the home, workplace, and world, it is more important than ever to develop the skills to resolve conflicts and create intimacy. Aromatherapy and coaching offer tools to add to our repertoire as we navigate this new world. When used in combination, we can unlock pieces of ourselves that need healing and accelerate our growth.

Susan Cote, owner of Everyday Harvest LLC, is an aromatherapist and certified life coach, attending the Co-Active Training Institute for a two-year intensive program. Unlocking Natural Fertility: Holistic Strategies to Enhance Your Chances of Conception

Fertility

“Natural fertility-boosting strategies focus on optimizing your overall health and creating a nurturing environment for conception. By making dietary changes, managing stress, and addressing health concerns, you empower yourself to take control of your fertility journey.”
—Ana Engelhardt, ND

challenges affect many individuals and couples, often leading to stress and frustration. While medical interventions like in-vitro fertilization (IVF) are common, natural methods to support fertility can be effective and empowering. By addressing underlying health issues and making lifestyle changes, you can boost your fertility and prepare your body for conception.

Optimize Your Nutrition

A nutrient-rich diet is fundamental to supporting reproductive health. Focus on:

• Antioxidant-Rich Foods: Consume fruits and vegetables high in antioxidants like vitamins C and E, such as berries, spinach, and nuts. Antioxidants help combat oxidative stress, which can damage eggs and sperm.

• Healthy Fats: Incorporate sources of omega-3 fatty acids, like fatty fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts, to support hormone production.

• Whole Grains: Replace refined carbohydrates with whole grains like quinoa, brown rice, and oats to regulate blood sugar levels.

• Plant-Based Proteins: Emphasize plant-based proteins such as beans, lentils, and tofu, which have been linked to better fertility outcomes.

Manage Stress Levels

Chronic stress can impact fertility by disrupting hormone levels and ovulation. Try relaxation techniques such as mindfulness, yoga, or deep-breathing exercises. Acupuncture, which can improve blood flow to reproductive organs and regulate stress hormones, is another excellent option.

Maintain a Healthy Weight

Weight plays a crucial role in fertility. Being underweight or overweight can disrupt ovulation and hormonal balance. Aim for a BMI within the

healthy range by adopting a balanced diet and regular exercise routine. Even small changes toward healthy weight can significantly improve fertility.

Time Intercourse Effectively

Tracking ovulation can significantly increase the chances of conception. Methods include:

• Basal Body Temperature: Charting daily body temp changes can identify the fertile window.

• Ovulation Predictor Kits (OPKs): Detect the luteinizing hormone surge before ovulation.

• Cervical Mucus Monitoring: Noting changes in mucus consistency can help pinpoint ovulation.

Support Sperm Health

Male fertility is just as important as female fertility. Improving sperm quality is essential for conception. Men should prioritize:

• Healthy Diet and Supplements: A diet rich in antioxidants, zinc, and selenium can enhance sperm quality. CoQ10 is an excellent supplement that supports sperm production and motility.

• Regular Exercise: Moderate exercise improves testosterone levels and overall health.

• Avoiding Heat Exposure: Prolonged exposure to high temperatures, such as from hot tubs or tight clothing, can reduce sperm count.

• Avoid Toxins: Limit exposure to environmental toxins such as pesticides, plastics, and household chemicals that can disrupt hormones. Opt for organic produce, BPA-free containers, and natural cleaning products.

• Limit Alcohol and Caffeine: Excessive alcohol and caffeine intake can impair fertility. Stick to moderate consumption—no more than one alcoholic drink or one cup of coffee per day.

• Quit Smoking and Recreational Drug Use: These substances can harm egg and sperm quality, reducing the likelihood of conception.

Embrace Herbal Remedies

Certain herbs have been traditionally used to support fertility:

• Vitex (Chasteberry): May regulate menstrual cycles and improve ovulation.

• Maca Root: Believed to enhance hormonal balance and libido.

• Ashwagandha: Can reduce stress and support reproductive health in both men and women. Consult with a healthcare provider before incorporating herbal remedies to ensure they’re safe and appropriate for your circumstances.

Prioritize Sleep

Quality sleep is often overlooked but vital for hormonal balance and overall health. Aim for seven to nine hours of uninterrupted sleep per night. Create a bedtime routine, limit screen time before bed, and ensure your sleeping environment is dark and quiet.

Address Underlying Health Conditions

Certain medical conditions, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, or thyroid disorders, can hinder fertility. Seek medical guidance to address these issues with targeted treatments or lifestyle adjustments. Additionally, consider working with a naturopathic doctor to explore integrative approaches tailored to your specific needs.

When to Seek Medical Help

If natural methods do not lead to conception after six months to a year of trying (depending on age and health factors), consult a naturopathic doctor or fertility specialist. Early intervention can identify potential challenges and expand your options for treatment.

Natural fertility-boosting strategies focus on optimizing your overall health and creating a nurturing environment for conception. By making dietary changes, managing stress, and addressing health concerns, you empower yourself to take control of your fertility journey. Consistency and patience are key, and professional support can complement your efforts to achieve your dream of parenthood.

Breastfeeding Support: Lactation Consultants Can Make All the Difference

B“Prenatal support includes providing evidence-based information on the benefits of breastfeeding, potential challenges, and essential techniques like positioning and latch. An IBCLC will help you develop a realistic breastfeeding plan tailored to your family’s needs.”

Dean, RN, IBCLC

efore delving too deeply into just how lactation consultants can help with breastfeeding issues, let’s start with the first question you may want answered: “What is a lactation consultant?”

An International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is a healthcare provider who has specialized training in breastfeeding and lactation management. IBCLCs possess in-depth knowledge of lactation-related anatomy and physiology, breastfeeding techniques, infant feeding, and the management of common breastfeeding challenges.

Lactation Is About Mom and Baby…

The role of IBCLCs in maternal and infant health is vital. Breastfeeding offers numerous health benefits for both mother and baby, such as bonding, improved immune function, and long-term health outcomes, including a reduced risk of certain diseases.

However, many parents face challenges when breastfeeding, such as difficulty with latching, painful feedings, or milk supply issues. IBCLCs help families navigate these challenges by offering guidance, support, and practical solutions. By assisting families in meeting their breastfeeding goals, IBCLCs contribute to the health and wellness of both children and mothers.

...And the Whole Family

Having an IBCLC in your corner promotes the overall wellness of your family. We provide emotional support, empowering you to build confidence in your ability to care for your baby and yourself, especially during the early days of parenthood. As an IBCLC, we offer personalized care that addresses both the physical and emotional needs of the families we work with.

Before the Baby Comes…

Prenatal care by an IBCLC is often overlooked in healthcare systems, which is a significant disservice to expecting parents who want to breastfeed. Learning about breastfeeding before delivery greatly increases your chances of meeting your breastfeeding goals. Prenatal support includes providing evidence-based information on the benefits of breastfeeding, potential challenges, and essential techniques like positioning and latch. An IBCLC will help you develop a realistic breastfeeding plan tailored to your family’s needs. For those with special circumstances—such as a history of breast surgery or plans for a scheduled cesarean section—we can prepare you for the challenges these situations may present. Additionally, we can help you emotionally prepare by setting realistic expectations for your breastfeeding journey, acknowledging that it may take a few weeks or months to “master” breastfeeding.

…And After

Postpartum support includes hands-on assistance with latch and positioning. Early intervention is key to ensuring an effective latch, as poor latch can lead to nipple damage and pain. IBCLCs assist you in recognizing feeding cues, establishing feeding frequency, and ensuring that your baby is transferring milk effectively.

If your infant is not successfully transferring milk, we can identify the barriers and offer tailored solutions to improve the situation. If breastfeeding challenges persist after the first few days, ongoing lactation support is available. This includes advice on managing issues like nipple pain, poor latch, and low milk supply.

What to Expect During a Lactation Consultation

Lactation consultations may involve a weighed feeding to assess milk transfer, evaluating latch, and providing solutions to common breastfeeding problems. We can also teach milk expression techniques, such as hand expression and pumping, for those who need to build or maintain their milk supply or who may be separated from their infant.

Ongoing lactation support ensures you have the education and resources needed as your baby’s breastfeeding needs evolve. Many mothers may even find it helpful to have a consultation before returning to work, to develop a plan for maintaining their milk supply while pumping.

An IBCLC is a valuable resource for any parent with breastfeeding goals. Whether you have prenatal support or are seeking help after birth, we can assist you at any point in your breastfeeding journey to help you achieve success.

Before becoming an IBCLC, Caitlin spent over ten years as a postpartum and well-baby nursery nurse, where she discovered her passion for helping mothers achieve their breastfeeding goals. Caitlin graduated from Bridgeport Hospital School of Nursing in 2013 and went on to obtain her BSN in 2018. Caitlin is a dedicated Registered Nurse (RN) and International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) with a passion for providing compassionate and expert care to mothers and their babies. Every Win Counts: Small Steps for Big Strides Toward Your Healthiest You

“It doesn’t matter how successful or unsuccessful you are right now. What matters is whether your habits are putting you on the path toward success….

If you want to predict where you’ll end up…all you have to do is follow the curve of tiny gains…. Tiny battles…are the ones that will define your future self.”

—James Clear, Atomic Habits (2018)

Youmay have a financial plan, a retirement plan, or travel plans. But do you have a wellness plan for 2025 and beyond? The start of the new year is the perfect time to reflect on which aspects of your wellness you’d like to improve. Would you like more energy? Improved weight management? Better sleep? Enhanced mental health (less stress or depression)? Or maybe you would like to develop an overall healthier lifestyle for greater vitality and longevity.

Developing a wellness plan will enable you to create a vibrant future as you start to live your healthiest, happiest life today.

Your Vision Can Lead to Small, Powerful Wins

Envisioning what optimal wellness looks like for you can be a powerful motivator, but achieving your long-term milestones doesn’t require grand gestures. In fact, it’s your small, steady steps that can pave your way to sustainable transformation. By taking on each new wellness practice as you’re able, you allow it to become a habit without getting overwhelmed.

Small wins also trigger the production of dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and reward that encourages you to keep going. This can help you create momentum by boosting

your inspiration and confidence that you have the power to achieve your goals.

Begin with Attainable, Daily Self-Care Routines

You can make your wellness journey very manageable and even fun by deciding to enjoy learning new things that are good for your health. Start with one or two habits at a time, whether it’s a dietary change, a new supplement, or a commitment to another lifestyle change.

Tips to Build Simple, Effective Wellness Habits

• Your Wellness Vision Board: Before deciding which habits you’d like to adopt, clearly visualizing your outcomes is an ideal step toward manifesting them. Create a full-color vision board using Canva, AI tools, other digital platforms, or actual magazine clippings to gather images, quotes, and symbols that reflect your wellness intentions. Display your wellness canvas prominently to inspire you daily.

• Your Wellness Journal: Start a journal to create your safe space to stay motivated, reflect, and celebrate how far you’ve come, especially during challenging times. Find one that feels special to you, or create a digital file you can

access anywhere. Begin by writing your intentions, tracking your progress, and noting your physical, emotional, and spiritual changes. Rereading your journal regularly can deepen your self-awareness, help you learn from setbacks, and keep you connected to your “why.”

• Diet Modifications: Small dietary changes can have a ripple effect on your health. You can gradually improve your eating habits one step at a time, without feeling deprived, by (1) eliminating foods or habits that don’t align with your wellness goals (gluten, dairy, soda, beef, pork, lamb, fast food) (2) replacing less helpful choices with better ones (gluten-free bread, oat/almond milk, water, chicken/fish/ eggs), and then (3) adding nourishing options that support your health (organic whenever possible: dark leafy green salads; green/berry juicing; nuts/seeds for snacks instead of candy bars). This approach will help you make positive changes without feeling deprived.

• Dietary Supplements: Eating right can go a long way, but it generally doesn’t do enough to ensure optimal wellness for various reasons. Supplements can fill in the gaps where your diet isn’t giving you enough micronutrients to feel your best. Under the guidance of a supplements specialist, focus first on adding products or nutrients that address the areas of your health that most impact your life. For example, consider:

• Sleep/Stress: Anxiocalm (an echinacea strain); isotonic magnesium glycinate; L-glycine; ashwagandha; and/or activated B-complex

• Joints: Glucosamine; patented hyaluronic acid; and/or omega-3 fish oil

• Weight Management: Irvingia/African mango; Slendacor®; Relora®; and/or whey or vegan protein powder with or without creatine. Consider journaling how each one affects you before adding others.

• Movement/Exercise: Explore physical activities that align with your wellness vision. You might try gentle yoga, walking, cycling, dancing, or strength training. The right movement for you is one that is fun and energizing.

• Mindfulness/Stress Management Practices: Prioritize your activities that promote mindfulness and serenity. Deep belly breathing, nature walks/hiking, humming, journaling, and meditation can create a sense of inner peace and uplift you.

Establishing a regular sleep routine is also crucial. Going to bed and waking up at the same time each day supports your body’s natural rhythms.

“Envisioning what optimal wellness looks like for you can be a powerful motivator, but achieving your long-term milestones doesn’t require grand gestures. “
—Erika Dworkin, BCHN

Consistency and Persistence Yield Long-Term Success

Over time, your consistency and persistence in following the vision and routines you set for yourself will ultimately bring about sustainable change.

Tips to Stay Consistent and Persistent

• Manage Your Consciousness: Your managed, positive mindset will be your greatest asset on your wellness journey. Consider exploring personal growth avenues like The Avatar® Course or gratitude journaling to learn to deliberately develop more positivity. Reflecting on things for which you’re grateful each day will shift your focus from what’s lacking to what’s fulfilling, thereby enhancing your mental health and outlook.

View self-improvement as a game or challenge to make it enjoyable and empowering. Self-care is not about achieving a final, “perfect” version of yourself. Rather, it is about continually moving toward a healthier, more balanced you. After all, setbacks are part of any journey. Instead of being discouraged by your missteps, allow yourself to view them as learning opportunities.

Gently confront the excuses that prevent you from making progress. Rather than letting such barriers hold you back, remind yourself of your “why” to stay connected to the vision of your healthiest self. Above all, always be kind to yourself, especially on difficult days. Acknowledge the effort you’re putting into your journey, and be patient with yourself.

• Don’t Go It Alone: Your journey to wellness will be more sustainable if you surround yourself with supportive people who have similar wellness visions. Seek out your tribe, a community of like-minded individuals, either in person or online, through a Facebook group, local wellness classes, or support circles. Social connections will offer you both accountability and motivation, keeping you moving forward even when challenges arise.

Consider collaborating with a holistic nutritionist whose personalized consultations and various life-changing tools will provide you with ongoing, trustworthy guidance, encouragement and compassion, monitoring, accountability, and program adjustments.

• Keep Learning: To stay inspired, read or listen to wellness books, podcasts, or videos. Your lifetime learning will provide fresh motivation and keep you engaged.

As you welcome the new year, think about what you can do to improve your overall health and well-being. Whether you’re looking to reach and maintain a healthy weight, sleep better, have more energy throughout the day, or reduce stress, it comes down to tweaking and honing your lifestyle routines—whether improving your eating habits, exercise regimen, work schedule, or self-care practices—for optimal results.

By following these guidelines, you will develop new routines and habits and build a foundation in 2025 that will support your long-term wellness. As you move through this year, remember that wellness is not a destination; it’s a journey shaped by small, meaningful actions that align with your personal vision of your healthiest self. Take it one step at a time, knowing that you’re creating lasting wellness from the inside out.

The Impact of Our Mindset on Weight Loss

When beginning a weight loss journey, most people focus on caloric intake and exercise. But one aspect is often overlooked: how we feel and think when we are going through the process. The way we view ourselves, the way the world impacts us, and our goals all have the ability to affect us. Thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes about food, exercise, and body image can either support the weight loss process or interfere with our goals.

Mental Perception

Our mind is like a river. When water flows freely, it can provide nourishment, promoting health and well-being. When we remain positive, our mind can care for our body. But blockages, such as past negative behaviors, stressors, or barriers preventing you from reaching your goal, can build up, leading to weight gain, frustration, imbalance of hormones, or even actions that do not resemble who you are.

When removing the emotional blockages and barriers during our weight loss journey, we are acknowledging the cause of the weight gain and health issues. For example, work was very stressful, which caused you to gain weight. The positive result is learning how stress can affect your body. To take care of yourself, develop mindful strategies to help balance stress. If you allow yourself to come first, everything else falls into place. Having a positive mental perception helps everything run smoothly, benefiting your goals and overall emotional health.

Metaphysical Thoughts

Imagine your excess weight as a brick wall you are carrying around. This wall has been built by your subconscious. The purpose is to separate you from other people and from life itself. Looking closely, you see every brick has something written on it, such as stress, anger, fear, judgment, embarrassment… The weight you are seeking to let go was added to your consciousness before it was added to your body. Your body is like a screen your thoughts are projected onto, including unprocessed feelings, negative ideas, or fear-based attitudes.

We all have negative emotions, but when not processed properly, they get stuck in our minds and then our bodies. Painful experiences are not

meant to linger but to teach us what we need to learn and dissolve into memories. When we ignore or suppress our feelings and memories that cause us pain, our subconscious may try to cope through eating. If we surrender to the pain our subconscious holds, it begins the process of releasing it from our physical bodies. And through bioenergetics, positive thoughts rewire our brains, helping improve our weight and overall health.

Mindset Shifts

To help create a positive mindset toward your weight loss journey, celebrate the little things. Making a healthy food choice or finding an exercise you enjoy and adding it to your weekly routine are moments that prove your mind is welcoming this change. Enjoy nature by taking deep breaths of the fresh air, and meditate, even if it’s just a few minutes a day. Keeping a journal of your decisions that made you feel good can help remind you of the positive changes you are making. One of the most powerful mental tools during the journey of weight loss is self-compassion. Be kind to yourself. You already got over the speed bump of deciding a change needed to occur, and now you’re implementing change.

The Sweet Spot: Aligning with Your Natural Energy for a Balanced Life

W“The

sweet spot is where the magic happens. It’s where you connect with your highest potential, access your creative flow, and tap into your authentic power. It’s not indulgent— it’s essential.

The more we align with these rhythms, the more we can thrive in every aspect of our lives.”

—Kelly L McCarthy

e all have those golden moments during the day when we feel our best—energized, focused, and at peak productivity. These are our personal sweet spots. Yet, as a society, we’ve been conditioned to ignore them. Expectations from jobs, societal norms, and even the fear of missing out (FOMO) often pull us away from fully embracing this natural rhythm.

But things are shifting. The collective consciousness is waking up, stepping away from the relentless daily grind, and creating new ways to honor these sweet spots. More people are questioning outdated systems and realizing they can design a life that aligns with their natural flow rather than conforming to one imposed on them. The rigid 9-to-5 structure is no longer the one-size-fits-all solution it was once thought to be.

This shift is most evident with younger generations. They value freedom, flexibility, and authenticity, rejecting the rigid “work for the man” mentality that dominated past eras. They understand the importance of energy management and prioritize their well-being. For older generations, this evolution may feel unfamiliar or even intimidating. Many were taught that success required sacrifice, hustle, and operating on someone else’s terms. But here’s the truth: honoring your energy isn’t lazy—it’s revolutionary. It’s an act of self-love and empowerment.

Why Your Sweet Spot Matters

Your sweet spot isn’t just about being productive; it’s about aligning with your true self. When you work with your natural energy flow instead of fighting against it, everything becomes easier and more fulfilling. Creativity blooms, tasks take less effort, and stress diminishes. Whether you’re an early bird whose mind is sharp at dawn or a night owl who thrives in the quiet of the evening, embracing your rhythm is key to living a more balanced and harmonious life.

And it’s not just about work—it’s about living. By honoring your sweet spot, you also create space for joy, rest, and connection. You can show up more fully for your passions, your loved ones, and yourself.

My Sweet Spot

For me, my sweet spot is in the early morning hours. It’s when my energy flows most freely, and I feel deeply connected to my intuition and purpose. From the moment I wake, I am ready to pour my energy into my work, my clients, and my creativity. This focus lasts until about 3 p.m., when I naturally start to wind down.

Understanding this about myself has been transformative. It is why I schedule energy work only during these peak hours and reserve evenings for lighter tasks, such as short soul readings only on

select days. I’ve learned that honoring my energy is not just beneficial for me—it also allows me to show up more powerfully and fully for my clients. When my energy is in balance, I can be a clearer, stronger channel for healing, guidance, and insight.

Finding Your Sweet Spot

Discovering your sweet spot takes intention and awareness. Start by tuning in to your body and mind throughout the day. When do you feel most focused? When does your energy dip? What tasks feel effortless, and when do you struggle? These patterns will guide you.

Once you’ve identified your sweet spot, protect it fiercely. Schedule your most important or creative work during this time, and don’t let outside demands pull you away. Learn to say no, set boundaries, and prioritize what aligns with your highest good.

The Bigger Picture

This isn’t just about individuals—it’s a societal shift. As more people step into their power by honoring their sweet spots, we’re collectively breaking free from the old paradigms of overwork and burnout.

We’re redefining success to include balance, joy, and fulfillment.

The sweet spot is where the magic happens. It’s where you connect with your highest potential, access your creative flow, and tap into your authentic power. It’s not indulgent—it’s essential. The more we align with these rhythms, the more we can thrive in every aspect of our lives.

So, ask yourself: When do you feel most alive? When does your creativity surge, your focus sharpen, and your energy feel boundless?

Honoring your sweet spot is a gift to yourself and the world. When you show up as your best self, you inspire others to do the same. The shift is happening. Will you step into your sweet spot and reclaim your energy?

It’s time to stop surviving and start thriving.

Turning 70: Lessons from an Older, Wiser Self

“I love the supercharge I get from intimate, connected time with a friend or loved one, the joy and purpose I receive from my Rolfing® practice, a hug, time with my beloved pet family, a phone call or connection on some level that warms my heart and soul.”

—Sharon Sklar, BFA, LMT, CAR

Irecently turned 70, and I began to examine life, aging, and all the information that floods my brain when I stop, think, and listen. One thing that stands out to me is my gratitude for my health, my sanity, and my ability to persevere. Like most people, I have experienced the full spectrum of joy, despair, and all that is in between. I am committed to learning from each experience, trying not to get stuck, and moving forward with humility.

In my early twenties, when life felt particularly bleak, I was saved by seeking my path and finding my spirituality. I learned to listen to that inner guidance that would sometimes pop up. Thankfully I was quiet enough to hear it, pay attention, and really listen. Color came back into my world.

When I was 22 years old, my first time experience Rolfing, I had an experience of inner guidance during that I would become a Rolfer. It came along with visual content as well. I was awestruck, putting it on the back burner until a year or so later. It became more evident each day that I should quit graduate school and pursue the prerequisites to get into The Dr. Ida Rolf Institute® in Boulder, Colorado. And what a ride it has been!

Listen to Your Inner Guides

I remember one Saturday morning when I was about 23, the phone rang. As I reached to answer the corded, plugged-in telephone, I heard a voice say, “Your parents are getting a divorce.” I picked up the receiver. My father was on the other end of the phone, which was strange because he never called me. Then he told me that he and my mom were getting a divorce. How weird… I knew it, I had just “heard” it, and now it was confirmed. Things like that had been happening, but I was young, somewhat foolish, inquisitive, and setting out to figure out my life. Knowing I had some

guidance was very powerful, but I didn’t always hear the messages. I had to be quiet enough, which at times, at that age, was a difficult task. Being young, finding out we have inner guides, and learning to listen to them was truly an unimagined art to me. Those guides have served me well over the years, and I feel blessed to have their wisdom. Without that guidance, I felt like a kite without a tail. There was upward movement, but it was erratic and frenetic. I longed for order, support, and direction. My prayers were answered—I just needed to be quiet enough to hear and listen. Like most younger adults, I had to find my way.

Listen to Your Body

On the physical plane, I feel that many Rolfing® sessions over decades were the basis for me to overcome some very rough physical issues that threatened my well-being. Eighteen years ago, having had a lumpectomy for breast cancer, chemo, radiation, and infusions for another year brought complications that resulted in three more surgeries that might have sidelined some. But my strong physical structure, deep belief in my life having meaning, and not being ready to give up provided solid ground to fully recover and become a better version of myself!

When I had a very bad fall down the stairs eight years ago, resulting in smashed knees, a shredded meniscus in my right knee, and two tendons that popped off the bone in my shoulder, I needed more surgery and much rehab. I was told by some that I would never be the same and that shoulder surgery was limiting. I healed exceptionally well. I sought out the right doctors and had great communication, and those physical issues became tucked into my past. I recovered, and again, am better than before. The body’s healing process is miraculous.

Find Your Best Healing Process

So, how do we heal? Is it luck? Is it belief?

In my case, I think it’s a combination of my tenacious nature, really good bodywork, a strong belief in Spirit, and the inner guidance that pops up when I need it most. Of course, doctors have their role. I’m not anti-doctor or anti-medication, but I need to have clear explanations and reasons to believe in what is being said to me. I can align with that information and knowledge, and then I can fully participate in my own healing process alongside a trusted practitioner.

As I get older and wiser, I hold onto railings when I go down the stairs. I am much more cautious when driving my car because one false move on someone else’s part could alter my life quickly and perhaps permanently. That is not in MY future—been there, done that, and don’t want that experience again.

Now, I love the quiet, the peaceful alone time, the presence of nature. I love the supercharge I get from intimate, connected time with a friend or loved one, the joy and purpose I receive from my Rolfing® practice, a hug, time with my beloved pet family, a phone call or connection that warms my heart and soul—and throw in some exercise and great conscious foods. Waking up each morning and writing ten gratitudes in a journal starts my day with joy, love, and inner wisdom. I am more peaceful than ever.

Healing through life in all different ways— physically, mentally, and spiritually—takes time, patience, and determination to put the past in the past and live in the moment. Try to slow down, unplug more, be quieter, and look to the small things for comfort. Love yourself first, so you are better able to love those around you. You have the benefit of time, the willingness to change, and the insights to create a life well-lived if you take charge, shift gears, and listen more deeply. See what shows up for you!

I wish you a long life that is filled with purpose, meaning, health, and joy. Now is the time to participate in your own healing journey. It is never too late to start.

Hormonal Harmony: Unlock the Secret to Breast Cancer Prevention

“After menopause, when ovarian estrogen production declines, fat tissue becomes the primary source of estrogen. Elevated estrogen levels can fuel the growth of hormonereceptor-positive breast cancers.”
—April Beaman, RDH, CTT

Hormones are the body’s chemical messengers, orchestrating many vital processes. However, hormonal imbalances can lead to serious health concerns, including an increased risk of breast cancer. Weight management is another critical factor, as excess body fat, particularly after menopause, can disrupt hormonal balance and elevate breast cancer risk. This article explores the connection between hormones, weight, and breast health while providing actionable steps to balance hormones, shed excess weight, and create a healthier, happier body.

The Link Between Hormones, Weight, and Breast Cancer

There are three key hormonal factors that tie weight and breast cancer risk together:

1. Estrogen Dominance: Fat cells produce estrogen, and having excess body fat can lead to higher levels of this hormone. After menopause, when ovarian estrogen production declines, fat tissue becomes the primary source of estrogen. Elevated estrogen levels can fuel the growth of hormone-receptorpositive breast cancers.

2. Insulin Resistance: Carrying excess weight, particularly around the abdomen, can lead to insulin resistance. This condition causes higher insulin levels, which can promote inflammation and create an environment conducive to cancer growth.

3. Chronic Inflammation: Obesity is associated with chronic, low-grade inflammation, a condition that encourages the development and progression of cancer cells.

Maintaining a healthy weight and balancing hormones are essential steps to reduce breast cancer risk and enhance overall health.

6 Natural Strategies to Balance Hormones

Hormonal balance is crucial for many elements of a healthy life—such as quality sleep, mental acuity, and mood—but it doesn’t happen overnight. It requires intentional lifestyle changes that support your body’s natural rhythms. Fortunately, there are plenty of natural, simple options to help keep your hormones in balance at home. Though this list is not exhaustive, it includes some of the most important actions you can take to maintain a healthy hormone balance.

1. Eat to Nourish

Your Hormones

Diet plays a central role in hormonal health. Choose foods that reduce inflammation, support liver detoxification, and stabilize blood sugar levels.

• Fiber-Rich Foods: Broccoli, kale, and flaxseeds help your body eliminate excess estrogen.

• Healthy Fats: Omega-3 fatty acids in salmon, walnuts, and chia seeds support hormone production and reduce inflammation.

• Cruciferous Vegetables: Foods like cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage promote estrogen metabolism.

• Limit Sugar and Refined Carbs: These can cause insulin spikes and worsen hormonal imbalances. Opt for whole grains like quinoa and oats.

2. Maintain a Healthy Weight

Carrying extra weight disrupts hormonal balance and increases breast cancer risk. For sustainable weight loss:

• Practice Portion Control: Focus on balanced meals to avoid overeating.

• Choose Nutrient-Dense Foods: Whole, unprocessed foods provide essential nutrients and keep you full longer.

• Create a Caloric Deficit: Aim for gradual weight loss through a combination of diet and exercise.

3. Exercise Regularly

Physical activity not only aids in weight loss but also supports hormonal health.

• Cardio: Walking, running, or swimming improves insulin sensitivity and burns calories.

• Strength Training: Building muscle increases metabolism and regulates hormones like insulin and cortisol.

• Stress-Reducing Activities: Yoga and Pilates help lower cortisol levels and improve mental health.

4. Prioritize Sleep

Sleep is crucial for hormone regulation. Lack of rest can disrupt leptin and ghrelin, hormones that regulate hunger and fullness, and raise cortisol levels, promoting fat storage.

• Stick to a regular sleep schedule.

• Create a calming bedtime routine with activities like reading or meditating.

• Keep your sleep environment cool, dark, and quiet.

5. Manage Stress Effectively

Chronic stress raises cortisol levels, which can interfere with other hormones and contribute to weight gain. To manage stress:

• Practice mindfulness or deep breathing exercises.

• Spend time outdoors or engage in hobbies you enjoy.

•Connect with friends and family for emotional support.

6. Support Detoxification

Your liver plays a critical role in metabolizing hormones and eliminating toxins. To support liver health:

• Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

• Eat detoxifying foods like garlic, beets, and green tea.

• Limit alcohol and processed foods, which can burden the liver.
