Hey, I’m Dr. Diane!

Spring is just around the corner and for many of us it’s a time to put our attention on spring cleaning—not just for our homes, but for our health. That’s why this issue is focused on brain health, longevity, and extending our lifespan through adopting healthier lifestyles. There are so many ways to do this— eating healthier foods, starting an exercise program, meditation, spiritual pursuits, finding a purpose, detoxing, and just enjoying the simple things in life. You’ll find many fantastic articles in this issue all about the secrets of longevity.

“Congratulations

to Ashley Frament, celebrating ten years as our amazing and wonderfully talented graphic designer for Natural Nutmeg and Essential Naples!”

—Dr. Diane Hayden, PhD

Speaking of longevity, I want to dedicate this issue to my amazing and wonderfully talented graphic designer, Ashley Frament. Ashley joined our team in March of 2015, and we are celebrating ten years of working together! I remember the first day I met Ashley—she was carrying a gorgeous leather satchel from the Saddleback Leather Company, and I fell in love with it immediately. I still remember her saying to me when I complimented her, “You know their slogan is “They’ll Fight Over It When You’re Dead’”! So you can imagine the style and quality of this bag! I knew from that first meeting that Ashley was a perfect fit for our team, and ten years later I still feel the same.

Ashley was filling the role of my original partner in Natural Nutmeg who did all the design work, so it was a huge leap for me to trust someone new. But right out of the gate, she did an incredible job. She has gone above and beyond for me so many times I can’t count. From dealing with a quirky branding consultant who made us jump through ridiculous hoops in rebranding the layout design, to having to work weekends because of the never-ending last-minute ads that come in hours before our print deadline, to creating gorgeous designs for so many of our advertisers, to me changing images and shuffling things around— she does it all with a smile, no matter what time of day it is!

I have so much gratitude for her that I just can’t put it into words. She has been my rock—always willing to jump in and do the work, taking initiative and making the magazine look absolutely stunning (I finally relinquished choosing the covers myself and she does a fantastic job picking them). She is witty and funny, and we laugh constantly over the crazy things that happen. She goes the extra mile for me and all my advertisers when they need last minute changes, she’s helped staff events for us, and she is just an all-around amazing person to know and to work with.

So, thank you Ashley, for everything you’ve done for us for the last ten years. I can only hope there will be many more!

Wishing you health and happiness,

Dr.

Introducing Dr. Michael Duben: A Pioneer in Functional Endocrinology in Fairfield County

As a board-certified endocrinologist, my career has been shaped by a commitment to patient care that goes beyond conventional treatments. My practice has allowed me to manage a broad spectrum of endocrine disorders, from diabetes to thyroid conditions, providing evidence-based care that has improved countless lives. However, recognizing the limitations of conventional medicine, I pursued training in functional medicine, a discipline that looks at the body as an interconnected whole. This discipline aims to address the root causes of disease rather than merely treating symptoms.

My new practice in functional endocrinology is not just about medicine; it is about a philosophy of health that integrates the best of both worlds. Here is what a patient can expect:

• Time and attention: I understand the value of personal interaction in healthcare. My consultations and follow-up visits extend significantly beyond the average, ensuring that each patient has ample opportunity to discuss their health in detail. This extended face-to-face time allows for a deeper understanding of individual health narratives, lifestyles, and personal goals.

• Personalized care plans: each patient receives a tailored health strategy that includes medications (if necessary), personalized diet plans, carefully selected herbal, mineral, and vitamin supplements, and lifestyle modifications. My approach is to empower you with knowledge and tools to achieve and maintain optimal health.

•Specialized focus: while I cover all areas of endocrinology, my interests lie in thyroid diseases, men’s health, calcium and bone disorders, and the intertwining of cardiovascular health with diabetes.

•Unique availability: As the only functional endocrinologist in Fairfield County, my practice is uniquely positioned to offer this hybrid care. Patients no longer need to choose between traditional medicine and holistic health; here, they get the best of both.

I do not merely manage conditions; I aim to transform health. By combining the rigorous scientific foundation of traditional endocrinology with holistic, preventative strategies of functional medicine, I offer a treatment model that is both innovative and deeply personal.

For example, in managing thyroid conditions, I look not only at hormone levels but also at environmental factors, stress, diet, and even genetic predispositions. My approach to bone health includes not only medications but the emphasis on the appropriate protein intake, calcium and vitamin D optimization, other micronutrients that support skeletal health, and detailed analysis of bone density results. When it comes to diabetes and cardiovascular health, my strategy involves a deep dive into insulin production and sensitivity, dietary patterns, and lifestyle interventions that, with medications, can significantly alter disease progression.

Whether you are dealing with chronic conditions or simply wish to optimize your health, my practice is here to serve as a beacon of integrative care in our community. Let us work together to transform your health journey. Welcome to a new era of endocrinology, where every aspect of your well-being is considered, respected, and nurtured.

As a board-certified endocrinologist, Dr. Duben has dedicated his professional life to the intricate world of endocrinology for nearly twenty-five years, training in the Mount Sinai and Montefiore Hospital systems. Augment Your Practice with Releasing

In 2006, as a newly trained Alexander Technique (AT) teacher, I encountered a client who experienced an intense physical and emotional release during a session. Unprepared to support her through the overwhelming emotions tied to past trauma, I realized my training lacked the tools to handle such profound moments. Her decision not to return underscored the need for me to expand my capacity to hold space for clients navigating deep emotional undoing. Determined to grow, I pursued therapy and additional training. Yet, a crucial piece was missing. While AT training taught me to release chronic tension and misuse, it didn’t address emotional holding patterns, such as a tight throat, tight chest, or trauma. This led me to train as a releasing coach to focus on the following:

•Recognizing and letting go of unhelpful emotions, sensations, or thoughts.

•Accepting all experiences without judgment or shame.

•Achieving freedom from the feelings and sensations that often control us.

When supported by a certified coach, the releasing process fosters profound calm, improved relationships, and a greater sense of well-being. Similar to AT, once you learn releasing, you can immediately integrate it into your life and practice.

Kristin Mozeiko, DMA, AmSAT-certified AT teacher and releasing coach, guides clients through deep somatic practices to achieve mind-body unity (online and in-person with hands-on treatment). To stay connected, join her newsletter or book a session by contacting Artofreleasing@gmail.com.

Functional Medicine: A Personalized Approach to Your Health

CT’s Top Naturopathic Physicians

Naturopathic medicine as primary health care emphasizes prevention and selfhealing through the use of natural therapies. Naturopathic doctors are primary care physicians, licensed to practice in Connecticut, who blend centuries-old knowledge, a philosophy that nature is the most effective healer, and current research on health and human systems. They have attended a four-year naturopathic medical school, are clinically trained, and work in all aspects of family health—from pediatric to geriatric care.

Naturopathic diagnosis focuses on identifying underlying causes of disease, and therapies are supported by research drawn from peer-reviewed journals from many disciplines, including naturopathic medicine, conventional medicine, European complementary medicine, clinical nutrition, homeopathy, psychology, and spirituality.

Kathleen Cannon, NDDr. Sara B. Frawley, ND

As a naturopathic physician, my practice is grounded in compassionate, conscientious, and exceptional care for individuals experiencing chronic conditions as well as those who want to level up their health. I offer in-depth naturopathic consults, genomics assessment, and HeartMath biofeedback sessions. I also have functional medicine training and am a lifelong learner, always seeking new information to support my patients.

I believe deeply in the healing ability that is innate in all of us. Through healing myself from my own health crisis in my mid-twenties, I saw how natural interventions can allow for so much healing. Amazed, I left a job in financial services, returned to school to complete pre-med studies, and then went on to naturopathic medical school, all to share the power that natural support can provide for healing and greater health.

I am grateful to practice in a field with amazing colleagues, and I’ve been able to study and clinically train with incredible doctors. My practice is a unique combination of whole-person medicine, genomics, blood type support, mental/emotional tools, emerging research in functional medicine, and a whole lot of heart-centered care.

When patients come in for their follow-up, they not only tell me how much better they’re feeling, and we see that reflected in lab results, but they also have that special glow that only comes from truly improving their health!

I practice virtually and in person at Dr. Katie Wellness Insights, a wonderful collaborative integrative medicine group. Visit my website for more details.

Founded by Dr. Sara B. Frawley, ND, Willowbrook Health Center offers a number of healing modalities, including naturopathic medicine, chiropractic medicine, personalized nutrition, acupuncture, energy healing, massage therapy, hypnotherapy, and infrared sauna treatments. We strive to provide a holistic approach to healthcare, a one-stop shop that treats the whole person and addresses the root causes of illnesses at an affordable rate. Dr. Frawley is in-network with most major insurances and Husky.

My background in organic chemistry allows me to use an analytical approach to disease states. I practice the art of naturopathic medicine by addressing the root cause of your illness. I’m not just swapping out pharmaceuticals for herbs or vice versa. Together, we determine the underlying reasons that brought you into our office to begin with.

My passion for naturopathic medicine comes from wanting to help people truly heal, not just by putting a Band-Aid on something. Watching people grow, change, and live healthier lives is what drives me every day. I always joke that if I’m doing my job correctly, you won’t have to see me anymore. I love that moment when a patient feels completely better and is truly healed. At that point, I can tell them to call me if they need me and to go live their lives to the fullest!

Coastal Natural Medicine, LLC

Hope. Naturopathic medicine provides tools that restore hope. The foundations of naturopathic medicine lie in the belief that the body has an innate wisdom that will move in the direction of healing if given the right conditions. When patients feel well, they have an opportunity to reach their highest potential.

After many years working in a conventional medical field, I could see that patients needed more. With the help of my amazing mentors, I was able to eliminate medications and restore my health. Reversing PCOS and hypothyroidism and restoring my quality of life with chronic Lyme and autoimmune disease was a miracle.

When healing encompasses not only the physical symptoms but also creates spiritual and emotional shifts, it is inspirational. When a patient tells me she decided to quit her job and start her own business, or someone overcomes severe anxiety and depression, gaining clarity to embrace gender transition—these are the things that make naturopathic medicine unique.

Coastal Naturopathic Medicine is a premiere naturopathic practice serving Fairfield County, the tri-state area, and patients from all over the world. My mission is rooted in fundamental naturopathic principles where each patient receives individualized care, emphasizing removing obstacles to healing, giving the body what it needs, and stimulating the body’s ability to heal itself. Continuing to find ways to reach more people, bring naturopathic medicine to the community, and expand the modalities I offer are all things I hope to accomplish in my practice.

I am so grateful to those in the community who have supported me, embraced my new practice, and voted for me for 10BEST. Natural Nutmeg brings light and focus to real, accurate, and useful information to those looking for an alternative to conventional wisdom related to health and healing. I am honored to be a part of a publication and grateful for those who supported me in the 10BEST.

Dr. Lindsay Ronshagen, ND Good Medicine

Naturopathic Health Center

AtGood Medicine Naturopathic Health Center, we specialize in solving complex digestive and hormonal issues—helping those who have struggled to find answers with conventional care. If bloating, fatigue, hormone imbalances, or gut discomfort are disrupting your life, we provide root-cause solutions that bring real, lasting change. With in-office visits for Connecticut residents and virtual consultations worldwide, we make expert care accessible wherever you are. I once even led a Naturopaths Without Borders team through remote villages in India, studying Ayurveda and homeopathy while delivering essential healthcare!

I know firsthand the frustration of chronic digestive issues and the lack of answers in mainstream medicine. That journey led me to become an expert in functional digestive and hormonal health, earning my degree from the National University of Natural Medicine and completing an accredited residency at the University of Bridgeport. I later served as a clinical supervisor and professor of Endocrinology, mentoring future naturopathic doctors. Beyond treating symptoms, my mission is to empower people to reclaim their vitality and create a ripple effect of positive change.

One of my most rewarding cases was a client who had spent years searching for relief with no progress. Through functional testing and personalized strategies, we completely transformed her digestion—restoring her energy, confidence, and presence in her family’s life. These transformations fuel my passion daily.

Exciting news—we’re expanding to a brand-new location in Branford this spring/summer! This growth will allow us to offer acupuncture and group programs both in person and online.

Dr. Nina Manipon, ND Revitalize Wellness Center

As the owner of Revitalize Wellness Center, my mission is to empower patients in their journey to optimal health, especially those with gastrointestinal and autoimmune challenges. My path to naturopathic medicine was deeply personal—after graduating from Villanova University and working at GE and in technology services, I felt unfulfilled. Losing my mother to colon cancer when I was sixteen, and then losing my father soon after that, changed everything. I knew there had to be a better way to make healthcare compassionate, dignified, and patient-centered.

Struggling with digestive issues during this time, I experienced the frustration of mainstream medicine’s focus on symptoms rather than root causes. This experience led me to Sonoran University of Health Sciences, where I earned my doctorate and completed a teaching residency at the University of Bridgeport’s Naturopathic Clinic. I currently serve as a board member of the CT Naturopathic Physicians Association and am pursuing my Vitalist Certification from the Naturopathic Medicine Institute.

My passion is helping others reclaim their health through personalized, holistic approaches— nutrition, homeopathy, hydrotherapy, botanical medicine, acupuncture, and functional lab analysis. I created The Grace Method in honor of my incredible mom, Grace. It is a program designed for high-performing women seeking balance, clarity, and lasting wellness with expert guidance and accountability.

Alongside homeschooling my children, I am creating educational programs to help our community achieve better health. I treasure quality time with my husband, preparing nourishing meals, and escaping to tropical destinations like Aruba!

Healing is personal, and I am honored to guide patients on their path to vibrant health.

Dr. Kara Varano, ND, FABNO, RN

Limbitless Wholistic Health, LLC, at Roots Medical Center

Attwelve years old, I was given a 50/50 chance of surviving bone cancer. I beat the odds after finding naturopathic medicine and incorporating its therapeutic modalities with my conventional therapies. That is when I knew I wanted to study naturopathic oncology and dedicate my life to researching ways to enhance conventional cancer therapies and target cancer cells with naturopathic modalities. In adulthood, I chose leg amputation after multiple failed attempts at limb salvage surgeries. Being an athlete and living an active lifestyle was not conducive to femur transplants. This was the driving influence in developing Limbitless Wholistic Health, LLC.

I’m Dr. Kara Varano, ND, FABNO, RN, a licensed naturopathic doctor, Fellow of the American Board of Naturopathic Oncology, and registered nurse in Connecticut. I have worked in oncology healthcare for twenty-two years and it is my goal to build hope, strength, and courage with each patient and family member I encounter. I offer education and research information to help empower my patients to make informed healthcare decisions for their individual health needs. My offerings include:

•Oncology-focused, comprehensive consultations with a therapeutic plan, either in-office or via telemedicine

•Second opinion consultation via telemedicine

•Evidence-based supplement plans and individualized nutrition planning

•Research evidence-based therapies including colon hydrotherapy, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, IV nutrient infusion therapy, FANGO detox therapy, and biocharger

•Specialty testing, including RGCC CTC testing and tumor markers

Patients can expect a thorough evaluation of their current health status and an individualized plan that works synergistically with whatever conventional modalities they may be using or plan to use. I have patients who use every plan: chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation therapy, or other, and patients who do not want to use any conventional therapies. Naturopathic oncology modalities that work independently as well as synergistically with conventional modalities are available.

I have walked the long path as a cancer patient and now live the long life as a cancer survivor, understanding the experiences my patients go through at all milestones of the journey. Living with cancer is living with a trauma that is only known by those who have experienced it, and that is what sets me apart from other practitioners in the oncology healthcare field.

I plan to continue to incorporate researched targeted nutrients and modalities that kill cancer cells and expand the scope and standard of cancer care. It is my hope that people living with cancer will be treated as thriving individuals with quality of life as they undergo therapies that eliminate cancer cells. I want my practice to be a space of healing, not a place of business. Healing comes in all forms—mind, body, and/or spirit. Watching the healing transformation of patients in my care is my greatest blessing.

Dr. Keith Yimoyines, ND

Rivers Wellness

Welcome to Rivers Wellness, the office of Dr. Keith Yimoyines, ND. I have been in practice in Connecticut since 2011 and opened Rivers Wellness in Wethersfield in October 2024. My primary areas of focus are Lyme and tickborne diseases, complex chronic disease, male and female hormonal imbalances, and digestive concerns. Patients seek me out when they aren’t getting satisfying answers from their other providers.

First and foremost, I treat every patient as an individual. Only when I truly understand a patient’s health goals can we work together to achieve them. I use the most modern, up-to-date laboratory testing, along with patient history, to direct my therapeutic approach, which will include lifestyle counseling (diet, sleep, stress, and exercise), as well as supplement and herbal protocols designed to meet patient goals. Effective follow-up is a cornerstone of a fruitful doctor-patient relationship. It is my goal to make sure what we are doing is working and make tweaks if it is not.

The most rewarding moment in my practice is the simple “thank you” I receive from a patient who had resigned themselves to feeling unwell and is now back to their normal self. There is nothing better than the patient who came in with multiple diagnoses, or no clear diagnosis, six specialists, and a dozen medications, and has now taken their life back after working with me.

I received my Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine from Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine (now Sonoran University) in Tempe, AZ, after completing my Bachelor of Arts degree at Lehigh University. I live in West Hartford with my wife, Julie, and two sons. I enjoy reading science fiction, listening to music, and practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Krav Maga.

Dr. Kelly Livingston Roots Deep Medicine, LLC

AtRoots Deep Medicine, I help women elevate their health so they can realize their potential. My signature approach integrates precise laboratory diagnostics and naturopathic protocols with heartcentered therapies to regulate the nervous system, helping women heal deeply in body, mind, and spirit.

I’m a naturopathic physician, speaker, and industry leader in gut–brain health and nervous system regulation. I specialize in helping women on the verge of perimenopause or menopause recover from chronic stress so they can feel strong in their bodies, clear in their minds, and alive in their souls.

My journey into naturopathic medicine began with a degree in psychology and philosophy. I always knew I wanted to explore how humans heal. When confronted with my own health struggles—unexplained fatigue, hormone imbalances, and a dysregulated stress response—I worked with my own ND. Through rootcause medicine, I found healing and knew I wanted to empower others with the same approach. In over twenty years in health and wellness, I’ve learned that most illness stems from nervous system dysregulation. My Vital Spirit Method integrates science with holistic therapeutics to help women restore balance.

One of my most rewarding experiences was working with a long-time patient who was reflecting on her decade-long healing journey. Through personalized care, she transformed not only her health but also her confidence and overall well-being. Witnessing patients reclaim their vitality fuels my passion for this work.

Looking ahead, I’m expanding The Vital Spirit Method, a structured approach that blends functional medicine, nervous system regulation, and holistic healing. I also launched The Vital Spirit Podcast, where I explore psychology, traumainformed polyvagal theory, and naturopathic medicine to support lasting wellness.

As a naturopathic physician, I combine cutting-edge science with compassionate care. Healing isn’t just about lab results—it’s about feeling heard and having a safe space to heal. Since founding Roots Deep Medicine Clinic in 2013, I have continued to evolve alongside my patients, bringing everything I learn back into my practice.

In my personal life, I am a single mom to my nine-year-old daughter. I live what I teach, knowing that a regulated nervous system and aligned habits are key to true vitality. My favorite hobby is yoga, and my favorite places to travel so far are Lake Atitlan in Guatemala, Northern Nicaragua, Negril, Jamaica, and Sedona, Arizona. A fun fact from my life is the topic of my doctoral thesis— before plant medicine was all the rage, I wrote my thesis on psychedelics and entheogens in the therapeutic setting, and I continue to research safe integration and setting when considering this tool in the healing process.

It is my passion to educate and empower patients. When given the right tools and support, the body knows how to heal. Every day, I am humbled by the healing I witness—it is my greatest honor to guide others in becoming fully human and deeply healed.

Dr. Ceylon Cicero, ND Natural Practices, LLC

Welcome to Natural Practices— a place where true health care exists. I am Dr. Ceylon Cicero, a board-certified naturopathic physician, owner, and practicing physician at Natural Practices, located in West Hartford, CT, in the Bishops Corner area.

I earned my doctorate in naturopathic medicine from the University of Bridgeport, College of Naturopathic Medicine, in 2003. I have been practicing for over twenty years, and my focus is on individualized care, root cause, and full-body healing while helping patients understand why they are doing what they are doing and how to prevent imbalances in the future.

My office provides a safe space for patients five years old and older to feel heard and cared for completely—mind, body, and spirit. Although I do not specialize in one area, I treat all ailments, acute and chronic, seeing patients with gastrointestinal issues as well as chronic inflammatory imbalances, including Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases, coinfections, autoimmune conditions, hormonal imbalances, and metabolic imbalances.

My passion is making true healthcare available to all by helping patients’ bodies help heal themselves. I believe it is important to meet patients where they are and help guide them to their optimal goals and balance. Naturopathic physicians are trained in many modalities, and I use a variety of them in my practice, including herbal medicine, acupuncture, homeopathy, nutritional counseling, hydrotherapy, and far-infrared saunas and ionic detox footbaths.

The world is full of so much heaviness and toxicity everywhere we turn. Join me one Saturday or Sunday every month for a full-body detox clinic day to release toxins and lighten your load—three services for one hour of your time! Call the office for more details.

Boost Your Business, Your Brain Health, and Your Mental Well-Being

Asa business owner, the weight of responsibility can often become overwhelming. Battling stress, anxiety, and other mental health concerns can be a byproduct of the constant pressures associated with running a business. However, having a solid marketing strategy doesn’t just benefit your business—it can also have a profound impact on your brain health.

It’s no secret that stress can take a toll on our mental faculties. This is where a well-executed marketing strategy can come to the rescue. By effectively promoting your business and attracting new customers, you can reduce financial stress, which is one of the leading causes of anxiety and mental strain for business owners. A steady flow of customers through an effective marketing plan can provide a sense of stability and security, alleviating the mental strain associated with uncertain income.

Boost Your Reputation

A strong marketing strategy can enhance your business reputation, leading to increased customer loyalty and a more predictable revenue stream. This predictability can offer peace of mind, reducing the stress and anxiety that often accompany the volatility of the business world. Implementing a marketing strategy can also lead to a greater sense of purpose and satisfaction. Seeing your business grow and succeed due to your marketing efforts can boost your confidence and provide a sense of achievement. This sense of accomplishment can have a positive impact on mental health, helping to combat feelings of self-doubt and apprehension that often plague business owners.

Seize New Opportunities

A successful marketing strategy can create new opportunities for networking and collaboration,

providing a supportive community of like-minded individuals and potential partners. This sense of connection and support is invaluable for mental well-being, offering an outlet for sharing experiences and gaining advice from others who understand the unique challenges of entrepreneurship.

Furthermore, a well-structured marketing plan can streamline business operations, contributing to increased efficiency and productivity. By minimizing inefficiencies and maximizing the impact of your efforts, you can reduce the cognitive load associated with running a business, freeing up mental space and energy for strategic decisionmaking and creative problem-solving.

5 StrategiesNaturopathic to Longevity and Cognitive Vitality

“By integrating a Mediterranean diet, targeted supplements, regular movement, advanced therapies, and mind-body medicine, you can optimize longevity and cognitive function naturally.”
—Dr. Ana Engelhardt, ND

Aging is a natural process, but how we age is largely influenced by our diet, lifestyle, and daily habits. Research shows that cognitive decline, chronic disease, and reduced vitality are not inevitable consequences of aging—they can be mitigated through proactive and holistic approaches. As a naturopathic doctor, I advocate for a comprehensive plan that supports longevity and brain health through diet, lifestyle, movement, therapies, and mind-body wellness. In this article, we will explore five of the most effective strategies to promote a vibrant, youthful life.

1. The Role of Diet in Longevity and Brain Health

The Mediterranean Diet: The Gold Standard for Aging and Cognitive Function

The Mediterranean diet has long been regarded as one of the healthiest eating patterns for longevity. Studies show that this diet significantly reduces the risk of cognitive decline, Alzheimer’s disease, and other neurodegenerative disorders.

Key components of the Mediterranean diet include:

•Healthy fats: Extra virgin olive oil, nuts, seeds, and fatty fish provide omega-3s that are essential for brain function.

• Antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables: Berries, leafy greens, and tomatoes contain polyphenols that protect against oxidative stress.

• Lean proteins: Wild-caught fish, legumes, and pasture-raised eggs support cellular repair.

• Whole grains and fiber-rich foods: Promote gut health, which is closely linked to cognitive function through the gut-brain axis, where a healthy microbiome supports neurotransmitter production, reduces inflammation, and enhances mental clarity and mood.

Anti-Inflammatory and Brain-Protective Nutrients

Aging is accelerated by chronic inflammation and oxidative stress. Including the following nutrients can help prevent early aging:

• Omega-3 fatty acids (DHA, EPA): Reduce brain inflammation and support cognitive function.

• Polyphenols: Found in dark chocolate, green tea, and red wine, these compounds enhance neuroprotection.

• Curcumin (turmeric): Reduces neuroinflammation and supports brain plasticity.

2. Supplements for Cognitive Function and Anti-Aging

While diet is foundational, supplements can further support longevity and cognitive health. Always consult with a licensed healthcare provider about which supplements may be beneficial and safe for you to take.

Other essential nutrients include:

• Vitamin D: Supports the immune system and brain function.

•B vitamins (B6, B12, folate): Improve energy and neurotransmitter production.

• Magnesium L-threonate: Enhances memory and cognitive flexibility.

Antioxidants and Longevity Boosters

• Resveratrol and NAD+: Support mitochondrial function and cellular repair.

• CoQ10: Beneficial for cardiovascular health, energy production, reducing oxidative stress, supporting mitochondrial function, and improving skin health.

• Astaxanthin: A potent antioxidant for skin and neuroprotection.

Botanical Support

•Ginkgo biloba: Improves blood flow to the brain, which can enhance memory function. Also contains antioxidants that protect brain cells from damage.

• Rhodiola and ashwagandha: Help the body adapt to stress and regulate the nervous system.

• Lion’s mane mushroom: Supports neurogenesis and cognitive function.

3. Movement and Longevity:

Exercise for a Youthful Body and Mind

Regular movement is essential for maintaining cognitive function, muscle mass, and overall vitality. Exercise increases brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which supports memory and brain plasticity.

Mind-Body

Movement for Longevity

• Yoga: Reduces stress, improves flexibility, and supports nervous system balance.

• Tai Chi and Qigong: Enhance circulation, reduce fall risk, and promote relaxation.

• Pilates: Strengthens the core, improves posture, and enhances mobility.

Aerobic Exercise and Strength Training

• Aerobic exercise: Enhances heart health and brain oxygenation.

• Strength training: Supports bone density and metabolic health, which is vital as we age to prevent osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease.

4. Emerging Anti-Aging Therapies

• Sauna therapy: Regular sauna use promotes detoxification, cardiovascular health, and longevity by activating heat shock proteins that support cellular repair.

• Red light therapy: Red light therapy enhances ATP production, reduces inflammation, and has been shown to support neuroprotection in neurodegenerative conditions.

• Cold water immersion: This therapy may improve mental health by increasing endorphin and norepinephrine levels; it can also improve resilience to stress by decreasing cortisol levels.

• Intermittent fasting: Intermitting fasting induces autophagy, a process in which the body breaks down and recycles its own damaged or unnecessary components.

• Peptide therapy: This therapy is a medical treatment that uses small chains of amino acids (known as peptides) to rebuild cellular pathways naturally. Some peptides can regenerate tissue and stimulate collagen formation, while others can improve mitochondrial function.

5. Mind-Body Medicine: The Missing Link in Longevity

• Therapy and mental health support: Emotional well-being is a critical component of longevity. Therapy, coaching, and social connection can greatly impact brain health and stress resilience.

• Acupuncture for brain health and aging: Acupuncture can improve brain health and function by modulating neurotransmitters, increasing blood flow, and reducing overall inflammation in the body. Recent research suggests that acupuncture can improve cognitive abilities and enhance the structural integrity and connectivity of the brain.

• Meditation and breathwork: Practices such as mindfulness meditation and box breathing reduce cortisol levels, improve focus, and enhance longevity.

Botanical Herbs for Mind-Body Balance

• Holy basil: Supports stress reduction.

• Gotu kola: Enhances cognitive function.

• Lemon balm: Promotes relaxation and restful sleep.

Aging well is not about avoiding time; it’s about embracing a lifestyle that supports a long, vibrant life. By integrating a Mediterranean diet, targeted supplements, regular movement, advanced therapies, and mind-body medicine, you can optimize longevity and cognitive function naturally. The naturopathic approach empowers you to take control of your health, ensuring that your golden years are filled with vitality and mental clarity.

Walking: An Oral Health-Promoting Habit?

Whatdoes taking a walk have to do with oral health? As we flip the calendar into the new year, we often take stock of the habits we ought to continue, modify, add, or discard. With that in mind, we ought to take a look at healthy habits that are easy to continue or to adopt and that give great benefits for little effort. So let me re-introduce you to an overlooked oral health-promoting habit that yields great results with little additional effort— taking a walk.

The mouth is an integral part of the whole body, so it should come as no surprise that when we discuss actions that promote the health of the rest of the body, the oral cavity and its contents should share in those benefits.

Possibly the most significant but undervalued effect of regular walking is its positive effect on the cardiovascular system. Effective blood circulation directly affects every cell in the body, including the periodontal tissues (gingiva, ligaments, and bone) and the endodontic tissues. The cardiovascular system’s primary function is to deliver nutrients and oxygen while removing waste products and carbon dioxide. However, other contents in the blood, including immune system mediators and pain-modulating factors, also help create a more comfortable and disease-resistant dentition and

periodontium. When we walk, our cardiovascular system improves and does its job better. Another benefit from regular walking is that it improves the ability to sleep more restfully due to better oxygenation and sleep-enhancing healthy mental rejuvenation. When we sleep more restfully, we tend to clench and grind our teeth less vigorously, reducing the risks of chipping and breaking teeth and restorations and creating abfraction lesions—costly, potentially painful, unsightly, and needless pathologies.

A further benefit of regular walking is that it can be done solo, as a couple, or in a group without expensive gear or training.

So, for yourself and those you love, go take a walk.

Leaky Gut, Leaky Brain: How Gut Health Impacts Your Mental Health

Y“But when the gut barrier weakens, toxic substances enter the bloodstream and trigger systemic inflammation, including at the blood-brain barrier…. This can activate an immune response (inflammation) directly in your brain, which is linked to several problematic health conditions.”

—Dr. Jared C. Pistoia, ND

our gut and brain are more connected than you might think. Research continues to uncover critical links between gut health and brain function, often referred to as the gut-brain axis. In essence, when the integrity of your gut barrier is compromised, it can lead to a cascade of health issues affecting both physical and mental health. The result can be the onset of a neurological disorder such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease or a mental health disorder such as major depression or generalized anxiety disorder. The good news is that there are simple steps you can take to improve your gut and brain health to both treat and prevent illness!

The Gut Barrier and Microbiome

You may be familiar with leaky gut syndrome, which occurs when your gut barrier becomes weak or leaky, allowing undigested food particles, toxins, and microbes to enter your bloodstream. The integrity of this barrier is largely reliant upon a diverse population of microorganisms known as the microbiome. These microorganisms hang around the gut cells, socialize, and wait for food. The foods you eat also feed your microbiome. Each species in the microbiome, like Candida or Lactobacillus , has its own dietary preferences.

If you eat unhealthy foods like fast food, sugary cereals, and other low-quality foods, your microbiome suffers. Certain populations of beneficial microbes decrease while harmful microbes increase. This weakens your gut barrier, opening thin pores between gut cells. Toxic by-products of digestion—which are normally sent to the liver for detoxification—can leak into your bloodstream, polluting it. The result is systemic inflammatory responses and toxic buildup in cells, including brain cells!

The concept of toxins in the bloodstream is something that Henry Lindlahr, an early pioneer of

naturopathic medicine, wrote prolifically about in his book Nature Cure. During his day, the concept was known as “toxemia,” which he described as a type of blood poisoning from poor health habits. He theorized that toxins entering the bloodstream from the gut could disrupt the body’s natural balance and lead to chronic health conditions. This early understanding aligns with modern research on gut barrier integrity and its systemic effects, reinforcing the importance of maintaining a healthy gut to prevent disease.

How Leaky Gut Leads to Leaky Brain

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a structure that protects your brain by regulating what can pass from the bloodstream into your brain tissue. Sound familiar? It ’s the same concept as the gut barrier. But when the gut barrier weakens, toxic substances enter the bloodstream and trigger systemic inflammation, including at the bloodbrain barrier. The inflammatory response at the BBB results in disruption of its integrity. This can activate an immune response (inflammation) directly in your brain, which is linked to several problematic health conditions.

Associated Health Conditions

The connection between leaky gut and leaky brain is thought to be related to various health issues, including:

• Neurological disorder: Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and multiple sclerosis

• Psychiatric conditions: Depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, autism

• Autoimmune diseases: Lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and celiac disease

• System issues: Chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia

There are likely more conditions related to the leaky brain, but research is still emerging in this area.

Steps to Protect Your Gut and Brain

To prevent or reduce the effects of leaky gut and leaky brain, there are some key steps you can take:

• Improve gut health: Consume a diet rich in fiber and fermented foods to support the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. Fiber feeds the microbiome, whereas fermented foods are a source of naturally occurring probiotic bacteria. Both of these foods contribute to microbial diversity in your gut, which offers a protective effect on the integrity of your gut.

• Reduce inflammation: You have heard it a thousand times—avoid processed food, fast food, and sugar! These poisons wreak havoc on your body. Processed and fast foods starve your body of nutrients and often contain high amounts of toxic ingredients. Instead, focus on anti-inflammatory foods like fatty fish, leafy greens, fruits, and vegetables.

• Improve elimination: Enhance your body’s ability to eliminate toxins by staying hydrated, consuming detoxifying foods like cruciferous vegetables, and supporting gut function with herbs like milk thistle, ginger, or dandelion root. Proper elimination reduces toxic buildup, which can alleviate systemic inflammation and improve overall health.

• Manage stress: Have you tried meditation yet? Psychological stress increases systemic inflammation, affecting gut and brain health. Incorporate stress-relieving activities like meditation or yoga into your daily or weekly self-care routine to keep your stress levels at bay. Understanding the relationship between your gut and brain is vital for maintaining a healthy and sharp mind throughout your life. Incorporating basic lifestyle strategies every day is crucial for establishing and maintaining a foundation of health for yourself. Not only will this protect your brain and gut, but also your health in general. If you are experiencing symptoms related to gut or brain health, consider consulting with a naturopathic physician to explore personalized strategies for healing.

Understanding Your Energy Is the Key to a Better World

Maya“The truth is that each of us is constantly emitting energy. Our thoughts, emotions, words, and actions create ripples that impact everyone we encounter. Whether we realize it or not, we are cocreating the world around us through the frequency we embody.”

Angelou said it best: “When we know better, we do better.” But what does that mean on a deeper, energetic level? It means that when we become conscious of our unique frequency—the energy we carry and project—we create space for others to rise into their own awareness. We move from reacting to life to intentionally creating it. The truth is that each of us is constantly emitting energy. Our thoughts, emotions, words, and actions create ripples that impact everyone we encounter. Whether we realize it or not, we are cocreating the world around us through the frequency we embody.

But here’s the key to this profound awareness for the collective: We’re stepping into a new time— one that invites us to feel more and think less, to create rather than react, and to simplify rather than complicate. It’s a time to come back to our essence and remember that balance is found within, not outside of us.

We often think the world around us is responsible for how we feel. But what if we pause to recognize that our inner state is shaping what we experience? Here are some empowering and reflective questions to help you become aware of your energetic frequency:

• What energy am I bringing to this moment?

• Am I reacting to life, or am I consciously creating it?

• Am I allowing external situations to dictate my mood, or am I choosing my response from a place of awareness?

• How can I simplify this situation? Am I overcomplicating it with my thoughts and emotions?

A Simple Example from Daily Life

Imagine you’re having a productive day, and suddenly, your computer crashes. Some people will react with frustration, panic, or anger, creating ripples of chaotic energy. Others might take a breath, accept the moment as it is, and see it as an opportunity to pause and reset.

The difference is awareness.

When we live unconsciously, we project our internal chaos outward, imprinting stress, frustration, and negativity onto others. But when we live with intention, we hold space for calm, balance, and compassion, even in challenging moments.

Here are some practices to bring more awareness into your life.

When something unexpected happens—whether it’s a delay, a disagreement, or a challenge—pause and ask yourself:

• What am I feeling in this moment?

• Am I reacting from habit, or am I choosing a conscious response?

• Is this something I need to control, or can I surrender to the flow?

Notice how often we complicate life by trying to control things outside of us. Simplicity is found in returning to your breath, your heart, and your presence. The more we shift from thinking to feeling and from reacting to creating, the more aligned our energy becomes.

Creating vs. Reacting

Reacting happens when we allow our external circumstances to control our internal state. Creating happens when we move from within— choosing how we show up and what we radiate into the world. Ask yourself:

• Am I allowing external noise to pull me away from my truth?

•What would happen if I approached life from a place of simplicity?

•The world needs your creative energy, not your reactions.

The truth is, we’re entering a time when heart-centered living will take precedence over mind-driven action. It’s about tuning into your intuitive, emotional frequency and moving through life from a place of feeling rather than overthinking.

Feeling is the new way forward:

•Instead of asking, “What should I do?” ask, “What do I feel called to create?”

•Instead of reacting to every situation, ask, “What energy do I want to bring into this moment?”

We are all energetic beings in constant cocreation with the universe. Every thought, feeling, and action ripples outward, affecting everyone we encounter. So, the question is: What ripple do you want to create today?

When we become aware of our energy, we naturally invite others to do the same. It’s not about forcing anyone to change—it’s about being a living example of conscious frequency. As Maya Angelou said, “When we know better, we do better.” And as we do better, we help others step into their light, too.

Let’s practice simplicity:

•When you catch yourself overthinking, pause and return to your breath.

•When you feel overwhelmed, ask, “What is the simplest way to approach this?”

•When emotions rise, feel them fully, but choose to release them with love.

The ripple effect of your conscious energy is powerful. One calm, centered person can change the energy of an entire room. Imagine what happens when more of us live this way.

Your energy is your legacy. Let it be one of healing, creativity, and love as we co-create and dream our world into being.

Think Sharper, Live Longer: Brain-Boosting Secrets You Need to Know

I“Our

modern world is relentless. We are bombarded with information, constantly connected, and often mentally exhausted before the day is even over. Giving the brain the opportunity to rest is not a luxury—it’s a necessity for longevity.”

—MIchele Beaule

n a world that often glorifies hustle and productivity, we sometimes forget that true longevity isn’t just about living longer—it’s about living well. At Imagine Float, we believe that prioritizing brain health is one of the most profound investments you can make in your overall well-being. A clear, focused, and adaptable mind is essential for embracing life with intention, energy, and purpose.

We also know that cognitive wellness isn’t a destination; it’s a journey—one that requires small, intentional steps. From science-backed therapies to simple daily habits, there are ways to support brain health that don’t feel overwhelming. Here’s how we at Imagine Float encourage a holistic approach to optimizing brain function and longevity.

The Power of Rest and Reset: Float Therapy and BrainTap®

Our modern world is relentless. We are bombarded with information, constantly connected, and often mentally exhausted before the day is even over. Giving the brain the opportunity to rest is not a luxury—it’s a necessity for longevity.

One of the most effective ways to reset the mind is through float therapy. Floating in a sensory-free environment allows the nervous system to shift into a deep state of relaxation, reducing cortisol levels and promoting mental clarity. Research suggests that this kind of stillness supports neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to adapt and form new connections—which is essential for long-term cognitive health. Imagine feeling the weight of the world lift off your shoulders as your brain enters a state of profound restoration.

For those looking for a guided approach to relaxation, BrainTap® provides another powerful option. This innovative therapy uses gentle light pulses and rhythmic sound patterns to guide the brain into a state of deep focus and relaxation. Whether you’re looking to improve sleep, sharpen memory, or simply reduce stress, BrainTap® can help retrain the brain for optimal performance.

Clients often tell us they feel more centered, more creative, and better able to handle life’s challenges after incorporating BrainTap® into their routine.

Stress, Inflammation, and the Brain: How Whole-Body Cryotherapy

and the

Ballancer®

Pro

May Support Cognitive Function

Chronic stress doesn’t just affect your mood— it physically alters your brain. Prolonged stress and inflammation can damage neurons, impair cognitive function, and even accelerate the aging process. That’s why prioritizing recovery is one of the most effective ways to protect brain health. Whole-body cryotherapy may be a powerful tool in reducing inflammation and supporting cognitive function and may encourage the release of antiinflammatory proteins, improve circulation, and increase oxygen to the brain. Many clients report feeling more mentally alert and energized after just a few sessions. Imagine emerging refreshed, focused, and ready to take on the day after only two or three minutes in our cryotherapy sauna! For those looking to enhance circulation and detoxification, the Ballancer® Pro offers gentle lymphatic drainage, supporting the body’s natural ability to remove toxins and improve oxygen flow. Good circulation is essential for brain function, as it helps deliver vital nutrients to support memory, focus, and overall cognitive resilience.

Small, Intentional Steps for Lifelong Brain Health

While advanced therapies may supercharge brain health, daily habits play a critical role in longevity. Simple yet intentional choices can make a profound difference:

• Move daily: Regular movement boosts circulation, supports neuroplasticity, and enhances overall well-being. Even a brisk walk can increase blood flow to the brain, sharpening memory and focus.

• Prioritize sleep: Sleep isn’t just rest; it’s when the brain repairs itself. Lack of quality sleep has been linked to cognitive decline, but small changes—such as limiting screen time before bed or using BrainTap®—can help improve sleep quality.

• Stay hydrated: Dehydration can lead to brain fog and fatigue. Drinking enough water throughout the day is one of the easiest ways to support mental clarity and energy levels.

• Manage stress: Chronic stress accelerates aging and impairs brain function. Engaging in relaxing activities, whether it’s float therapy, meditation, or simply sitting in stillness, is a key part of maintaining mental resilience.

Longevity Starts with Intentional Wellness

At Imagine Float, we believe that longevity is about more than just extending life—it’s about making every moment count. By prioritizing rest, recovery, and intentional wellness, we give our brains the best possible foundation for clarity, resilience, and longevity.

You don’t need to overhaul your entire life to see benefits. Start with one small shift—whether it’s a float session, a BrainTap® experience, or simply drinking more water—and build from there. Your brain is your most valuable asset, and investing in its health today means a brighter, more vibrant tomorrow.

Unlocking the Secrets to Optimal Brain Health

Your brain is the command center of your body, influencing everything from memory and focus to mood and overall well-being. But stress, environmental toxins, poor diet, and aging can take a toll on cognitive function. The good news? Science now offers a deeper understanding of how to protect and enhance brain health through lifestyle choices, advanced therapies, and holistic interventions. Whether you want to boost mental clarity, support recovery from cognitive decline, or simply future-proof your brain, this guide provides actionable insights to help you optimize your mind for years to come.

Understanding Brain Function: A Personalized Approach

Before implementing any treatment plan, it’s crucial to understand the unique aspects of an individual’s brain health. At our NeuroEdge Brain Performance Center, we conduct in-depth assessments to identify cognitive strengths and areas of concern. These evaluations form the foundation of our personalized treatment protocols.

• Baseline brain testing: This gold-standard assessment combines two key elements to offer a holistic view of brain function:

• EEG baseline with evoked response testing: Electroencephalography (EEG) measures the brain’s electrical activity. As part of the EEG assessment, evoked response testing is conducted to measure brain waves under task conditions. By identifying irregularities, we can pinpoint areas that may benefit from targeted therapies.

• CNS vital signs neurocognitive testing: This computerized test evaluates critical cognitive domains, including memory, attention, and processing speed. The results offer insights into how well your brain performs under various conditions. These assessments ensure we have a clear understanding of your brain’s unique profile, enabling us to create customized plans for improvement.

Advanced Therapies to Enhance Brain Health

At the Breiner Whole-Body Health Center, we integrate cutting-edge technologies with time-tested natural therapies to support brain function. Here are some of the transformative treatments we offer:

1.Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT): HBOT involves breathing 100% oxygen in a pressurized chamber, which increases oxygen delivery to tissues throughout the body, including the brain. This therapy supports healing by reducing inflammation, enhancing neuronal repair, and promoting neurogenesis (the growth of new brain cells). HBOT has been shown to improve symptoms in individuals with traumatic brain injuries (TBI), stroke, and cognitive decline, as well as the symptoms associated with long-haul COVID. It has also been helpful for those who want to improve their overall brain health and executive function.

2.NeuroField ™ neurostimulation: NeuroField neurostimulation utilizes transcranial electrical and magnetic stimulation to modulate brain activity. This non-invasive therapy helps balance brainwaves, reduce stress, and improve focus. It’s particularly beneficial for individuals dealing with anxiety, depression, or cognitive impairments.

3.Neurofeedback: Neurofeedback trains individuals to regulate their brain’s electrical activity. By identifying patterns associated with stress, anxiety, or poor focus, we help patients learn to optimize their brain function. This non-invasive therapy has proven effective for conditions such as ADHD, PTSD, anxiety, depression, post-concussion symptoms, stroke, and more.

4.Detoxification protocols: Toxins in the environment, including heavy metals and chemicals, can contribute to brain inflammation and cognitive decline. Our detoxification protocols use techniques like chelation therapy, Flow Presso lymphatic therapy, ionic foot baths, far-infrared sauna sessions, and nutritional support to remove these harmful substances from the body, reducing the toxic burden on the brain.

5.Specialized IV therapies: In addition to traditional IV therapy, we offer specialized formulations designed to improve blood flow to the brain and remove toxic metals. By delivering essential nutrients directly into the bloodstream, these IVs help enhance cognitive function, boost energy levels, and reduce oxidative stress.

6.TruDose therapy: TruDose therapy uses your body’s own innate healing capabilities by harnessing the healing properties of its own blood platelets. A truly tailored therapy, TruDose provides the precise dose that your body and brain need for the condition being treated. This therapy plays a crucial role in optimizing immune function, reducing inflammation, and improving overall neurological function. By utilizing an individual’s specific biomarkers, TruDose therapy ensures that patients receive the most effective treatment for their unique conditions.

Case Studies

At the Breiner Whole-Body Health Center, we’ve witnessed remarkable transformations in our patients’ lives through our integrative and personalized approaches to brain health. These stories exemplify the potential of combining advanced therapies with holistic care to address complex neurological challenges.

Ethan’s Journey with ADHD

Ethan, a ten-year-old boy, had been struggling with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Despite trying various medications, he experienced uncomfortable side effects that hindered his daily life. Seeking a natural alternative, his parents brought him to our center.

We conducted a comprehensive evaluation, including a baseline EEG with evoked response potential testing and neurotransmitter assessments. This allowed us to identify specific areas of Ethan’s brain that were not functioning optimally.

Based on these findings, we developed a personalized plan incorporating NeuroField neurostimulation, neurofeedback, and targeted nutraceuticals. Over time, Ethan’s focus and concentration improved significantly. He began excelling in school and developed a newfound sense of confidence and well-being.

Sally’s Battle with Memory Decline

Sally, a 78-year-old woman, had been experiencing progressive memory loss to the point where her family considered memory care assisted living. Upon visiting our clinic, we discovered that Sally was dealing with multiple toxicities and pathogenic bacteria and parasites in her gut.

We implemented a comprehensive detoxification program to address these issues. Additionally, Sally underwent targeted neurotherapies, including hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), neurostimulation, nutritional support, botanical treatments, homeopathy, IV therapies, and TruDose regenerative therapy.

As these interventions took effect, Sally’s cognitive functions improved markedly. She regained her independence, and the consideration of assisted living was no longer necessary. Her quality of life and that of her family improved dramatically.

“Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) supports healing by reducing inflammation, enhancing neuronal repair, and promoting neurogenesis (the growth of new brain cells). HBOT has been shown to improve symptoms in individuals with traumatic brain injuries (TBI), stroke, and cognitive decline.”

Timothy’s Progress with Autism

Timothy, a seven-year-old boy, had been developing normally until the age of two, when he began to regress and was eventually diagnosed with autism. When he came to our center, we immediately found that he was dealing with environmental toxins and that he had significant gut dysbiosis. We addressed these issues through detoxification protocols and gut health restoration. Alongside these treatments, Timothy underwent hyperbaric oxygen therapy and TruDose.

Over time, Timothy began to re-engage with the world around him. He started speaking and interacting more, bringing immense joy to his family and caregivers.

These stories highlight the effectiveness of our integrative approach to brain health. At the Breiner Whole-Body Health Center, we combine advanced technologies with natural therapies to help our patients achieve optimal brain function. Whether you’re looking to enhance memory, boost focus, or mitigate the effects of aging and stress, our comprehensive strategies provide a roadmap to success.

In patients like Sally and Timothy, TruDose therapy has been instrumental in their recovery. By targeting neuroinflammation, enhancing mitochondrial function, helping the immune system recognize and target pathogens, and regulating neurotransmitter levels, this approach has led to significant cognitive and behavioral improvements.

What’s in Your Diffuser? The Healing Power of Medical Aromatherapy

It’swinter, the time of year we especially love essential oils in our diffusers, but what is really at work here? Just a nice smell wafting through the rooms? Are there reasons to use certain oils? How do we learn more about ancient plant medicine?

Medicinal grade aromatherapy uses pure essential oils containing the full chemical composition of the plant, allowng for the most potent and reliable therapeutic effects. This is what to look for:

• Quality of ingredients: Medicinal grade essential oils are derived from carefully sourced pure plant materials and extracted with advanced methods, whereas cheap aromatherapy products often use synthetic fragrances and diluted essential oils.

• Purity and safety: High-quality medicinal aromatherapy oils are pure and do not contain harmful chemicals or additives. Cheap alternatives may have contaminants or synthetic substances, which can cause irritation or adverse effects.

• Long-term benefits: Medicinal grade essential oils offer more consistent, lasting results that support overall well-being. Cheap products may provide temporary relief but do not have the same lasting effects.

Aromatherapy can help us to heal physically, emotionally, and spiritually. The oils invite transformation of all three levels synergistically.

Physical Healing

Essential oils directly benefit the body due to their medicinal properties that influence bodily systems. For example, peppermint and wintergreen essential oils promote health by alleviating pain. Many other oils also assist with headaches, sore muscles, and joint pain.

Tea tree, oregano, and eucalyptus have antimicrobial and immune-boosting properties, while ginger and fennel aid digestion. Essential oils also support skin health and the regeneration of skin cells. Lavender, tea tree, and frankincense are helpful in treating conditions such as acne, eczema, and cuts to the skin.

People often book an aromatherapy consultation due to a physical complaint that soon leads to the healing of emotional and spiritual layers as well.

Spiritual Healing

Aromatherapy supports spiritual growth and inner peace by connecting individuals with their higher self and intuition. Frankincense and balsam have been used for grounding, mugwort and sage help clear blocked energy, and other oils offer clarity and focus in spiritual practices. Spiritual growth looks different for everyone. I work with a variety of essences to support the chakra healing. Many people feel blockage in their throat chakra and struggle to express themselves in their families or careers. Blue chamomile is one of my favorites for opening the throat chakra.

Emotional Healing

When inhaled or applied to the skin, essential oils send signals via the limbic system to areas that affect mood and emotions. Lavender and chamomile help reduce stress and anxiety, the citrus family is used to enhance moods, and ylang-ylang and geranium restore emotional harmony. In my practice, I often see individuals who need support with grief and deep sadness. After a loved one passed, one of my clients inhaled jasmine daily for a month and could not believe how comforted she was by using the essence.

What Can Aromatherapy Do for You?

In my aromatherapy consultations, clients explore specific health concerns, and together, we ensure they are using the appropriate oils and application methods for safety and efficacy. There are many safety precautions for working with essential oils that can be beneficial to individuals as well as practitioners. Please contact me if you are interested in taking my Level 1 Aromatherapy Certification Course, which offers 24 CUEs.

The Secrets to Living Longer: Surprising Ways to Boost Your Health and Longevity

Who doesn’t want to live a long, vibrant life?

How Thermography Helps You Live Longer

“A longer, healthier life isn’t just about good genes—it’s about the choices you make every day.”
—April Beaman, RDH, CTT

The secret to longevity isn’t just about adding years to your life; it’s about making those years full of energy, vitality, and joy.

We’ve all heard the basics: eat well, exercise regularly, get plenty of sleep, and manage stress. But what if I told you there are other, less obvious ways to improve your health and extend your lifespan? Science is discovering that small, often overlooked habits can have a profound impact on how we age.

From thermography (a powerful tool for early health detection) to cold therapy, gut health, and even breathwork, these simple yet effective strategies can help you stay healthier for longer.

Let’s dive into some of the most exciting and lesser-known ways to promote longevity and keep your body and mind in top shape for years to come.

Thermography: A Window into Your Health

Most people wait until they feel sick to go to the doctor, but what if you could spot health issues before they even start? That’s where thermography comes in.

Thermography is a noninvasive imaging technique that detects heat patterns in the body. It can reveal inflammation, poor circulation, and potential health concerns before symptoms appear, making it an incredibly powerful tool for preventative healthcare.

• Detecting inflammation early: Chronic inflammation is one of the most significant contributors to diseases like heart disease, arthritis, and even cancer. Thermography can pinpoint inflammation before it turns into a bigger problem, giving you time to take action through diet, lifestyle changes, or targeted therapies.

• Monitoring circulation and heart health: Poor blood flow is often a warning sign of cardiovascular issues. Thermography can help show where circulation is impaired, helping you improve heart health through lifestyle changes before serious problems arise.

• Spotting hormonal imbalances: Hormones play a massive role in how we age. If something is off, you might feel tired, gain weight, or experience brain fog. Thermography can help detect hormonal shifts by identifying areas of heat linked to thyroid, adrenal, or reproductive health issues.

• Supporting detoxification: Your body naturally removes toxins, but sometimes it needs a little help. Thermography can show where lymphatic congestion (a buildup of toxins) is happening, guiding you to detox methods like hydration, lymphatic massage, or infrared sauna therapy.

By using thermography as a proactive health tool, you can catch potential issues early and make simple lifestyle adjustments that keep you feeling great for years to come.

Cold Therapy: The Power of an Ice Bath

Taking a freezing cold shower or plunging into an ice bath might sound crazy, but cold exposure is one of the most powerful longevity hacks out there. Cold therapy works by putting your body under short bursts of stress, which activates survival mechanisms that make you stronger and more resilient.

How Cold Therapy Helps You Stay Young

• Boosts circulation: When you expose your body to cold, your blood vessels contract and then expand, improving circulation and heart health.

• Reduces inflammation: Cold therapy is known to lower chronic inflammation, helping with conditions like arthritis, muscle soreness, and even brain fog.

• Strengthens the immune system: Cold exposure has been shown to increase white blood cell activity, helping you fight off illness more effectively.

• Increases energy and mood: Cold therapy releases a flood of endorphins (the “feel-good” hormones), leaving you feeling energized and mentally sharp.

Start small—try a 30-second cold shower at the end of your regular shower and gradually increase the time. Over time, you’ll notice improved recovery, clearer thinking, and a stronger immune system.

The Gut-Longevity Connection

Did you know your gut health plays a massive role in how you age? The trillions of bacteria living in your digestive system (your gut microbiome) influence everything from your immune system to your mental health and inflammation levels.

How to Support a Healthy Gut for Longevity

• Eat more fiber: Fiber feeds the good bacteria in your gut, keeping your digestive system running smoothly. Load up with vegetables, nuts, seeds, and whole grains.

• Fermented foods are your friend: Foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, and yogurt introduce beneficial bacteria into your system, improving digestion and immune function.

• Avoid processed foods: Artificial additives, sugar, and unhealthy fats disrupt gut health, leading to inflammation and disease.

“Taking a freezing cold shower or plunging into an ice bath might sound crazy, but cold

exposure is one of the most powerful longevity hacks out there.”
—April Beaman, RDH, CTT

• Take probiotics and prebiotics: Probiotics add good bacteria to your gut, while prebiotics feed the bacteria already there.

A healthy gut = better digestion, a stronger immune system, improved mood, and reduced risk of age-related diseases.

Breathe Your Way to a Longer Life

We breathe every second of every day, but most of us do it incorrectly. Shallow breathing keeps the body in a state of stress, contributing to high blood pressure, poor oxygenation, and fatigue.

How Breathwork Boosts Longevity

• Improves oxygen flow: Deep breathing enhances oxygen delivery to your cells, keeping them healthy and energized.

• Reduces stress and anxiety: Slow, controlled breathing lowers cortisol (the stress hormone), reducing inflammation and protecting your brain from premature aging.

• Supports heart health: Breathwork improves heart rate variability (HRV), a key marker of longevity.

To train your body to better manage stress and build resilience, try box breathing (inhale for four seconds, hold for four, exhale for four, hold for four) or the Wim Hof Method.

Detox Your Way to a Healthier Life

Your body is constantly exposed to toxins— from pollution and processed foods to household chemicals. Over time, these toxins accumulate in your tissues, leading to fatigue, brain fog, and disease.

Easy Detox Habits for Longevity

• Drink more water: Staying hydrated flushes toxins and keeps your cells functioning properly.

• Try infrared saunas: Sweating helps your body eliminate heavy metals and other harmful substances.

• Support your liver: The liver is your main detox organ. Eat foods like garlic, turmeric, and leafy greens to support its function.

• Get moving: Exercise stimulates the lymphatic system, helping remove waste from the body. Aim for 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise most days of the week.

• Eat right: Choose fruits and vegetables in various colors, whole grains, and fiber-rich foods like legumes and nuts. Limit processed foods, sugary drinks, and unhealthy fats.

•Sleep: Prioritize seven to nine hours of quality sleep each night.

• Stress management: Practice relaxation techniques like deep breathing, meditation, or yoga.

• Limit toxins: Reduce alcohol consumption and be mindful of household cleaning products and personal care items

Pairing detoxification with thermography can help identify areas where the body is struggling to eliminate toxins, allowing for targeted strategies to improve your health.

Train Your Brain for Longevity

Keeping your mind sharp is just as important as keeping your body healthy. Cognitive decline is a major concern as we age, but the good news is that your brain can continue to grow and adapt throughout life.

How to Keep Your Brain Young

• Learn something new: Whether it’s a language, an instrument, or a new skill, challenging your brain helps keep it flexible.

• Stay social: Strong relationships and social connections protect against depression and cognitive decline.

• Meditate: Mindfulness practices improve focus, memory, and emotional regulation.

• Exercise regularly: Physical activity increases blood flow to the brain, reducing the risk of neurodegenerative diseases.

Final Thoughts: Longevity Is in Your Hands

A longer, healthier life isn’t just about good genes—it’s about the choices you make every day. By incorporating thermography for early detection, cold therapy for resilience, gut health for immunity, breathwork for stress relief, detoxification for cellular health, and brain-training techniques, you can significantly boost your healthspan.

Longevity isn’t about surviving—it’s about thriving. Start small, stay consistent, and enjoy the journey to a healthier, happier, and longer life!

Fueling the Mind: The Connection Between Nutrition and Brain Health

“Consuming

a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats has been linked to improved cognitive function and a lower risk of neurological diseases. Including brain-boosting nutrients in your diet is one of the most effective ways to protect and enhance brain health.”

Stewart, MS, RD-CDN

The food we consume plays a vital role in optimal brain health. Just as our bodies rely on a balanced diet, our brains require specific nutrients to function. Maintaining good brain health is crucial for overall well-being and longevity. Understanding the essential nutrients that support brain function and incorporating them in a well-balanced diet can help influence different brain functions and even form resilience to neurodegenerative diseases.

Omega-3 fatty acids are vital for good brain health, specifically EPA and DHA. EPA is essential in our bodies for healthy inflammatory responses and is needed to produce new nerve cells. DHA is the most abundant omega-3 fatty acid found in the brain. Together, EPA and DHA can help increase your brain-D neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which is responsible for the renewal of brain cells and, therefore, is also responsible for the development of our memory. EPA and DHA are found in fish such as salmon and mackerel, as well as fish oil supplements.

Alpha-linolenic acid is an omega-3 fatty acid found in walnuts, kale, Brussels sprouts, and pumpkin seeds. These foods can be great additions to your diet and promote brain health. A small amount of alpha-linolenic acid is also converted into EPA and DHA.

When harmful free radicals enter the brain, they cause oxidative stress, which is essentially the imbalance between harmful substances (free radicals) and helpful substances (antioxidants). People are exposed to free radicals in many ways, including from the environment, excessive sun exposure, or

even unhealthy foods. Increased oxidative stress can lead to a number of more serious issues with brain health.

Ensuring there is an abundance of antioxidants in the brain helps neutralize the free radicals and protect the brain cells from damage, therefore continuing to support overall brain function. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant. Try to include foods in your diet, such as oranges, strawberries, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cauliflower, to improve brain health. Vitamin E functions as an antioxidant and is found in almonds, avocados, sunflower seeds, and hazelnuts. Blueberries are known to be a superfruit. Rich in anthocyanins, blueberries are known to have anti-inflammatory properties and have been shown to help reduce neuronal deficits and help foster healthy brain aging.

We know the negative impacts sugar can have on our bodies. However, increased sugar intake can also significantly affect brain health. Diets high in sugar can increase the risk of Alzheimer’s, dementia, stroke, mood disorders, and impaired cognitive function. Consuming sugar in excess could replace healthful fats in the body, greatly affecting brain function.

Sugar is also proinflammatory, helping the production of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs). AGEs can build up in the body and in the brain and promote oxidative stress as well as inflammation, causing cell damage and leading to more severe brain health issues. Sugar can also become addictive in the way that it can rewire the brain to cause continuous cravings due to the

damage it is causing to the brain itself. Sugar cravings happen, and removing sugar entirely from the diet is unlikely. However, including nutrientdense meals and snacks with some of the foods mentioned above can help curb the cravings for sweets.

A balanced diet that includes a variety of nutrientrich foods provides the brain with the fuel it needs to function at its best. Consuming a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats has been linked to improved cognitive function and a lower risk of neurological diseases. Including brain-boosting nutrients in your diet is one of the most effective ways to protect and enhance brain health. Prioritizing nutrition for brain health not only enhances daily performance but also helps safeguard against cognitive decline as you age. Healthy eating is a long-term investment in your overall brain function.

Spring Cleaning the Mind: Clearing Psychic Debris for Optimal Cognitive Function

“Clearing psychic debris is not a one-time event but an ongoing process. Just as we regularly clean our homes and maintain our physical bodies, we need to prioritize our mental and emotional hygiene.

By cultivating self-awareness,

practicing forgiveness, and nurturing self-love, we can create a fertile ground for inner peace and optimal brain health.”
—Agnes Daddona, MA, Psychic Medium Counselor

Most of us have heard the saying, “A cluttered space is a cluttered mind.” But what if I told you that unresolved emotional issues and negative thought patterns can create a form of “psychic debris” that impacts not only our mental wellbeing but also our brain health and longevity?

Think of your brain as a computer, constantly processing information and creating connections. Now, imagine this computer becoming bogged down with old files, viruses, and corrupted data. The result? Sluggish performance, errors, and even crashes. When we harbor past traumas, negative beliefs, and unresolved emotional baggage, we create blockages in our energy systems that impede the flow of information and energy throughout our minds and bodies. This psychic debris can manifest in many ways, from anxiety and depression to physical ailments and even cognitive decline.

The Mind-Body Connection

The link between our mental and physical health is undeniable. Chronic stress, often stemming from unresolved emotional issues, can lead to inflammation, hormonal imbalances, and weakened immunity. This, in turn, can increase the risk of developing chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and even Alzheimer’s.

Past traumas and unresolved emotional baggage can also manifest as physical ailments. Unexpressed anger might lead to headaches or digestive problems, while suppressed grief could manifest as chronic fatigue or respiratory issues. These physical symptoms are often the body’s way of communicating that there’s an underlying emotional issue that needs to be addressed.

Decoding the Imprints of Trauma

Identifying and releasing energetic blockages is crucial for maintaining optimal brain health and well-being. While techniques like journaling,

dream analysis, and meditation can help us gain self-awareness, sometimes we need a little extra help decoding the deeper imprints of trauma. This is where my work as a psychic healer comes in. I can tune into your energy field and identify the blocks and imprints of trauma that may be contributing to your current challenges. These imprints, often formed in early childhood or even past lives, can be hard to decode otherwise. They can manifest as recurring patterns, limiting beliefs, and unexplained fears that hold you back from living your full potential.

But I don’t just identify these blocks; I help you heal them. Through a combination of energy healing modalities, guided visualizations, and spiritual counseling, I assist you in releasing these trapped emotions and limiting beliefs. I act as a conduit for Divine energy, facilitating deep healing and transformation at the soul level.

Techniques for Clearing Psychic Debris

In addition to seeking professional guidance, there are several techniques you can incorporate into your daily life to clear psychic debris and maintain a healthy mind-body connection:

• Journaling: Writing down your thoughts and feelings can help you process emotions and gain clarity.

• Dream analysis: Dreams often contain symbolic messages from our subconscious mind. Keeping a dream journal can help you decipher these messages and gain insights into unresolved issues.

• Energy healing: Practices like Reiki and other healing modalities help release energetic blockages and promote balance.

• Mindfulness meditation: Cultivating presentmoment awareness can help you observe your thoughts and emotions without judgment, reducing their power over you.

• Forgiveness: Holding onto resentment and anger only harms you. Practicing forgiveness, both towards yourself and others, can liberate you from the past and free up mental and emotional energy.

• Self-love: Nurturing a loving and compassionate relationship with yourself is essential for healing and growth. Treat yourself with kindness, respect, and understanding.

• Acceptance: Accepting yourself and your experiences, both positive and negative, is crucial for inner peace. Resisting reality only creates more suffering.

The Benefits of Inner Peace

Fostering forgiveness, self-love, and acceptance can promote a sense of inner peace, which has profound effects on brain health. Studies have shown that those who cultivate inner peace tend to have lower levels of stress hormones, improved sleep quality, and enhanced cognitive function. They are also less likely to experience anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues.

Clearing psychic debris is not a one-time event but an ongoing process. Just as we regularly maintain our homes and our physical bodies, we need to prioritize our mental and emotional hygiene. By cultivating self-awareness, practicing forgiveness, and nurturing self-love, we can create a fertile ground for inner peace and optimal brain health. If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or simply not living your best life, it might be time to consider seeking professional guidance. As a psychic, counselor, and healer, I can offer you a unique perspective on your challenges and help you identify the root causes of your suffering. I will not only help you identify these blocks but also help you heal them with all the modalities and help of the Divine. Together, we can embark on a journey of self-discovery, healing, and transformation, leading you to a life of greater clarity, purpose, and joy.

Personalized Brain Training: A Key to Longevity and Cognitive Health

“Over twenty years of research have shown how specific, targeted mental and physical exercises can activate and strengthen neural pathways, improve cognitive function, and support longevity, all with a simple daily regimen of about ten minutes twice a day.”

—Dr. Dana Lapointe, ND

The older we get, the more we might notice ourselves having certan moments—we forget where we put our keys or our phone or word or name recall seems elusive. Sometimes, that can be attributed to stress overload, a lack of sleep, or simply trying to keep too many balls in the air.

But at some point, seniors or their loved ones may begin to notice more global changes in their cognitive abilities. What was once simple, like remembering a grocery list or our child’s birthday, might require more focused attention and even written reminders. Even rote tasks, like walking across the room or tying a shoe, can suddenly become challenging, increasing the risk of falling.

Cognitive deficits in performing previously automatic daily activities can lead to devastating consequences. In fact, falls are one of the most serious health risks facing seniors, often leading to decreased mobility and loss of independence.

The good news is that these kinds of risks can be minimized with a holistic approach. One of the most valuable things you can do to help a senior avoid disaster is to examine their home environment and reduce the risk of falling. Securing or removing area rugs, decluttering, and keeping frequently used items within easy reach without the need for stepstools and stepladders go a long way.

Naturopathic care is essential to optimizing aging: testing to find out nutritional deficiencies, ensuring proper nutrition for an aging gut, and aligning the gut–brain axis with the right probiotics can help slow cognitive decline and should be part of a holistic approach to optimizing aging.

Neuroplasticity and Brain Health

Did you know there is a way to reverse cognitive decline by enhancing the brain’s capacity for

neuroplasticity? Neuroplasticity, in short, is your brain’s capacity to form new neural connections through learning and practicing skills. Although neuroplasticity peaks in childhood, the great news is you can reharness this ability at nearly any age. It’s like muscle building, a fundamental concept in personalized brain training.

The cerebellum, located at the base of the brain, works like the “brain’s brain.” It’s the skill center for the whole body and is responsible for automatic movements, balance, and coordination. It’s also where we learn skills that eventually become automatic, such as shoe-tying, reading, and walking.

When the cerebellum is working efficiently, we do learned things without actively thinking. But when it isn’t, it makes tasks much harder to complete, and it can take much longer to learn new skills. An inefficient cerebellum affects balance, coordination, memory, and concentration—making every activity feel like an uphill struggle. This can increase stress, create anxiety, and affect working memory, decision-making, and emotional control. However, these types of cognitive declines can be reversed with specific exercises and a personalized, proactive cerebellar training plan. By challenging the brain in particular ways that promote neuroplasticity, seniors can stimulate the cerebellum so it’s ready to learn and retain inputs.

Enhancing Neuroplasticity

Research shows that ballroom dancing, learning a new language, and building puzzles each enhance certain aspects of the brain’s functions. Likewise, over twenty years of research have shown how specific, targeted mental and physical exercises can activate and strengthen neural pathways, improve cognitive function, and support longevity,

all with a daily regimen of about ten minutes twice a day. Activities that require simultaneous physical and mental engagement are particularly effective for triggering neuroplasticity.

Personalization is the key. Every senior’s capacity is different, and their program should reflect their current ability. Exercises should be gentle but effective, targeting the parts of the brain responsible for processing and storing information.

Using detailed assessments, we offer seniors an app-based, gamified protocol that monitors progress and evolves as the user’s brain becomes more “plastic.” Low-impact exercise routines focus on areas like balance, memory, and mental agility to help create new neural pathways. In many cases, Medicare will reimburse the cost of this program.

Physical exercises are performed while standing or from the safety of a chair, as appropriate. Mental activities are carried out using a smartphone or iPad. Specific exercises are assigned for ten minutes twice a day, and improvements are often realized within a few weeks. Regular assessments and personalized adjustments ensure that the exercises remain effective as seniors progress.

Participants are reassessed every thirty days to track their progress and adapt their routines. This feedback loop ensures continuous improvement and keeps seniors motivated by demonstrating tangible outcomes. Ninety days of steady practice can bring surprising results.

Improving cerebellar efficiency optimizes mental health and enhances overall quality of life. When seniors feel more confident in their abilities, they’re more likely to stay active, engage in social activities, and retain independence. This program provides an easy way for seniors to achieve these goals, helping them lead fulfilling, independent lives well into their later years.

Hormones and the Brain: Bridging the Mind–Body Connection

Naturopathic

“Hormonal changes are a natural part of aging for both men and women, and understanding how they affect the body can help mitigate some of the symptoms and support long-term health.”

—Dr. Keli Samuelson, ND

medicine has come a long wayin the last three decades. It is now referred to as a complementary, not alternative, medicine, as naturopathic doctors will work with any allopathic treatment patients are receiving with respect to how both types of medicine provide the best health care possible.

Naturopathic Hormonal Health

Naturopathic doctors take a comprehensive approach to hormonal health, addressing the root causes of imbalance while prioritizing individualized care. To optimize brain function during hormonal transitions, naturopaths use a variety of strategies. We use diagnostics such as salivary, urine, or blood testing, which helps identify imbalances in estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, cortisol, and other hormones.

Hormones play a significant role in brain function, emotional health, and well-being, influencing the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, which play a major role in mood regulation. These biochemical messengers also affect memory, focus, and personality. This interplay between hormones and neurotransmitters is pronounced during certain life stages.

We all experience hormonal changes as we age. Our bodies undergo a number of changes, some affecting both genders similarly. Cortisol is one hormone that can increase and lead to stress-related health issues like anxiety, weight gain, and insomnia. The opposite can also happen, called adrenal fatigue. This condition occurs when the adrenal glands do not produce enough hormones, resulting in fatigue, weakness, mood change, sensitivity to stress, joint pain, weight loss, and hair loss.

The Complex Relationship Between Hormones and Neurotransmitters

Pregnenolone is a steroid hormone produced mainly in the adrenal glands, brain, and gonads that serves as a precursor to other hormones

such as progesterone, cortisol, estrogen, testosterone, and DHEA sulfate. Though the research on pregnenolone’s direct effects on the brain is still evolving, it does have various impacts on brain function and cognitive health. Some studies suggest that pregnenolone could enhance memory and improve learning abilities, especially in age-related cognitive decline.

Pregnenolone has shown potential neuroprotection, helping protect brain cells from damage. This is crucial for certain conditions, such as Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases. Pregnenolone could also influence depression and other mood disorders, such anxiety, regulating neurotransmitters such as GABA and serotonin, which help regulate mood.

Supplementing with pregnenolone has been suggested to help these age-related declines. Pregnenolone supports the brain’s ability to form new memories and retain information. It is a precursor to estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone, and it could influence the brain by maintaining a balance of these hormones.

Estrogen and testosterone are linked to cognitive performance and impact mood; progesterone influences GABA receptors to help relax and reduce stress. Pregnenolone is involved in cortisol regulation, influencing how the body and brain respond to energy demands during times of stress. It is a promising compound for brain health with potential applications in memory enhancement, mood regulation, stress support, and even neuroprotection in aging and neurodegenerative diseases.

Managing Hormone Changes

There are several ways to manage these hormonal changes, both natural and with medical intervention. Hormonal changes are a natural part of aging for both men and women, and understanding how they affect the body can help mitigate some of the symptoms and support long-term health. Following are some basic lifestyle guides.

• Dietary guidance: A diet rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and phytoestrogens to support hormonal balance and brain health. Foods such as wild salmon, flaxseeds, leafy greens, and berries are particularly beneficial.

• Exercise: NDs emphasize regular movement to reduce cortisol, enhance dopamine and serotonin, and improve overall mood stability.

• Stress management: Practices such as mindful meditation, yoga, and deep breathing help lower cortisol and promote mental clarity.

Botanicals for Hormonal Support

• Vitex (chaste tree berry): Balances estrogen and progesterone levels, easing symptoms of PMS and perimenopause.

• Ashwagandha: Reduces cortisol and supports dopamine production, beneficial for anxiety and mood swings.

• Maca root: Enhances energy and mood by supporting adrenal and hormonal balance.

• Black cohosh: Helps mitigate mood swings and hot flashes during menopause.

Targeted Supplementation

• Omega-3 fatty acids: Essential for reducing inflammation and supporting cognitive function.

• Magnesium: Supports GABA activity, reducing anxiety and promoting relaxation.

• B vitamins: Essential for neurotransmitter production, particularly B6, B9 (folate), and B12.

• Vitamin D: Low levels are linked to mood disorders, making supplementation vital for brain health.

Hormones play a crucial role in brain health and emotional well-being. From influencing neurotransmitter activity to dictating emotional patterns through life’s stages, the mind–body connection is ever present. While hormonal shifts can create challenges, they also offer an opportunity for healing and growth when approached holistically.

Naturopathic doctors specialize in supporting individuals through these transitions, combining advanced testing, personalized treatment plans, lifestyle guidance, and natural therapies to optimize brain function and emotional resilience. Whether navigating the seven-year cycles of hormonal change or addressing specific imbalances, a comprehensive approach can empower individuals to thrive mentally and physically.

In the Flow

H“There is a flow to life, and we need to be more in tune to experience it. Turning off the noise—TV, radio, our phones, our screens, listening to the news, being around negativity—are all just overlying the fundamental truth that we are out of touch with ourselves.”

—Sharon Sklar, BFA, LMT, CAR

ave you ever had a day when all things flowed smoothly, and the world seemed in sync? I recently had a perfect day that, from beginning to end, showed me that I was living as I was intended to live- with harmony, synchronicity, and joy. My heart still feels excited when I recall that day, and my wish is to have more ease and flow on a daily basis.

A Full Day

I awoke that Wednesday, my day off, with much to do and a schedule to keep. There were many aspects of the day that seemed out of my control. The big one was a workman coming to repair something, and the window of arrival was a four-hour block. Everything depended on his timely arrival, his timely service, and my ability to return home, take care of my brood of critters, and meet a dear friend for dinner and a show at the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts in Hartford.

When I booked the service appointment, I kindly asked that I be scheduled at the beginning of that block of time as I had important commitments that had time constraints. That day, the workman showed up early and was so very friendly and helpful and got the job done. I was overjoyed by the ease with which this part of my day was going as I was an hour away from home and had time deadlines.

I returned home, walked the dogs, fed my four critters, made a couple of important business calls, and zoomed off to the restaurant to meet my friend. Briefly forgetting it was rush hour, I drove into Hartford in a sort of guided bubble. I had a clear path ahead, found a parking space right near the restaurant, walked in, and saw the huge clock on the wall—it was exactly 5:30 p.m., the time we said we’d meet! I was thrilled to have this effortless chain of events unfolding on this day.

Serendipity

We had a lovely dinner and had plenty of special time to catch up on each other’s busy lives. My

car was parked closer to the restaurant than the theater, so with my ticket in hand, I left to move my car. We would meet in the lobby in just a few minutes. There are three lobbies, and we forgot to say which one would be the meeting place. After waiting several minutes, I decided to go to my seat, look at the program and settle in waiting for my friend. We had great seats—a sixth-row center orchestra. As I looked at the stage and the program, seeing my nephew’s name as the executive producer, I took a quick photo of the stage and sent it to him. Based in NYC and traveling all over the world, I thought he might like to see where I was.

“Guess where I am?!” I wrote. A few seconds later, he sent me a photo from outside the theater saying, “Guess where I am?!” I was so excited. I wrote that we should rendezvous during intermission. He always takes notes to give the stage manager to keep the production sharp. I checked my phone for the time, turned to look up at the aisle to see if my friend was coming and who was sitting right behind me—my nephew, his husband, and my sister! We were speechless and hugged with such joy! Then my friend came, knowing the guys and my sister—more hugs and happiness. We could not have planned it that way. It was just perfect! I felt on top of the world.

The show, Les Misérables, was amazing. My nephew was surrounded by actors who knew him during intermission and after the show. His decision to come to Hartford was a last-minute opportunity when, just that morning, their babysitter said she could stay with the kids. I was happy to share the whole thing with my dear friend and to revel in this joyous and magical day.

Finding the Flow

How do we get there to have a perfect day filled with flow and ease? I look at my life and know that when I am chasing my tail with busyness, I seldom flow. When I am not well-rested, I cannot

be open to joy. When my thoughts and deeds are heart-centered, I seem to breeze through my tasks and obligations with ease and serenity. Is the secret to slow down and tap into the power of being present? There is a flow to life, and we need to be more in tune to experience it. Turning off the noise—TV, radio, our phones, our screens, listening to the news, being around negativity—are all just overlying the fundamental truth that we are out of touch with ourselves. It is so easy to be swept up in our fast-paced world full of distractions.

It is my commitment to ease up on myself and my busyness and to slow down. I do not watch the news as I used to, and I do not stress over things I have no control over. I am drinking enough water and getting the nourishment my body needs and deserves. I am making to-do lists on paper to get those things out of my head and being kind to myself when I accomplish a few small tasks. There is such accomplishment when I cross out an item. Small steps help me to create a flow that supports my overall well-being.

Similarly, I see my work as a Rolfer as a gateway to help people find that flow in their bodies. Waking up refreshed and feeling easy with no pain is a joy. To progress through the day with a body that moves well and feels light is a blessing. All these things are achievable.

Energy is energy; flow is flow. When we live in the flow, our bodies and minds can create conditions that allow miracles and universal support to occur. We are one with the Universe, and everything seems easy.

Try out some easing techniques for yourself. See if a lighter and more in-tune approach helps you breathe a bit deeper. See if there is more happiness in the quieter times and in finishing smaller chores. Listen to nothing. Be with yourself and feel the flow. Nourish yourself in body, mind, and spirit. Life is meant to be rich, full, and joyous.

Why Functional Endocrinology Could Be Just What You Need

I“Everyone knows that men’s health is often an overlooked area in traditional medicine. Few doctors, outside of urology and endocrinology, order testosterone tests, and even when they do, other factors influencing testosterone production and metabolism are rarely addressed.”
—Dr. Michael Duben, MD

n today’s medical landscape, one significant issue is the lack of a balanced approach where patients receive both rigorously scientific, evidencebased treatment and a broader, holistic evaluation of their health. Under the traditional medical model, doctors often focus on ordering and interpreting tests, spending little time understanding the myriad factors influencing a patient’s health, like nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress, and spiritual aspects. Conversely, alternative medicine practitioners might look at these broader aspects but sometimes lack the depth of scientific knowledge needed for nuanced medical interpretation.

A Unique Approach to Men’s Health

Let me give you some examples of how I combine my expertise in traditional endocrinology and knowledge of functional medicine for the benefit of my patients. Let’s take men’s health. Everyone knows that men’s health is often an overlooked area in traditional medicine. Few doctors, outside of urology and endocrinology, order testosterone tests, and even when they do, other factors influencing testosterone production and metabolism are rarely addressed. Naturopaths, while attentive to symptoms, might not have the expertise to interpret complex or borderline lab values. What if an overweight man is experiencing chronic fatigue and has somewhat low total testosterone levels? Is this hypogonadism? Should he automatically start testosterone replacement?

My approach involves a detailed initial conversation about the patient’s lifestyle, including nutrition, sleep, stress, and even sexual health. Then, I order high-quality, gold-standard testing, delving deep into the results. Understanding that “normal” values from lab tests are based on population averages rather than individual norms, I go well beyond just those tests, however. I check pituitary hormones that control testosterone production, like luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). I also order sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), which can affect how much free testosterone is biologically active in the body. A slightly low total testosterone may not necessarily signify hypogonadism if SHBG is low, leading to normal free testosterone levels. But the evaluation does not stop there.

Equally important is detailed information about nutrition, type and frequency of exercise, quantity and quality of sleep, various stress factors, issues relating to relationships, presence or absence of chronic diseases, and so on. All those factors, separately and when taken together in various combinations, can influence both testosterone levels and symptoms a patient may experience. Then and only then, putting all the pertinent factors together, do I start a detailed discussion with the patient regarding his condition.

A Brand-New Functional Endocrinology Practice—and a New Approach to Treatment

This complexity in men’s health requires time, expertise in various medical fields, and an understanding of both laboratory science and functional medicine. I explain every step of evaluation and management in plain, understandable language, making sure that my patients grasp the implications of their healthcare data. I take my time to answer all the questions that may arise, especially in the era of confusing and complex information on the Internet and from other sources. The decision to pursue testosterone optimization or replacement therapy is made collaboratively, considering both benefits and potential drawbacks like impacts on prostate health or cardiovascular risks. Similarly, thyroid conditions are approached with meticulous care. The interpretation of thyroid function tests can be tricky; TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) from the pituitary is literally ten times more sensitive than T4 and T3 thyroid hormones. To illustrate, a five percent change in the level of T4 or T3 results in a fifty percent change in the level of TSH, going in the opposite direction. One needs to understand this dynamic when interpreting thyroid tests. And then there is an issue of antibodies against the thyroid. What do they mean? Where do they come from? Can they be changed? I answer all those questions, but not before carefully examining the lifestyle issues that may impact the function of the thyroid gland, such as stress, nutrition, medications, and inflammatory changes, to name a few. Then, I synthesize the available data into a comprehensive plan, incorporating scientific/laboratory and lifestyle information. The result is a much more comprehensive evaluation and a better health outcome.

In an era when healthcare can feel fragmented and rushed, my practice offers a model of integrated, patient-centered care, ensuring that each individual receives the attention, understanding, and treatment tailored to their unique health narrative.

Stitches of Identity: The Lifelong Connection Between Clothing and Our Origins

“As children, our clothing choices are often dictated by our families, reflecting cultural traditions, values, and history. These early experiences with clothing are more than just about style; they shape our understanding of who we are and inform our identities as we grow.”
—Mary Carangelo, MS

Whena baby enters the world, they are immediately thrust into an unfamiliar environment, one that starkly contrasts with the safety and warmth of the womb. The bright lights that glare down, the sharp and sometimes overwhelming sounds of voices, the cool air brushing against their delicate skin, and the touch of hands lifting and handling them can be startling and distressing. This sudden influx of sensory stimuli often elicits a powerful response—a piercing cry that breaks the silence, signaling their arrival. This primal outburst is not just a reaction to discomfort; it is an instinctive call for assurance in this new context.

For adults nearby, that first cry is music to their ears, a joyous confirmation that the baby is alive and well. The moment is laden with emotion, indicating the start of a new life and the countless possibilities that lie ahead. Once the baby is introduced to their mother, they are enveloped in their very first piece of clothing—a soft, swaddling blanket. This act of swaddling is more than a practical necessity; it mimics the snug confines of the womb, providing a sense of security and warmth. The tightness of the wrap calms the baby, helping them to settle into their new reality, easing the transition from the protected space they once knew.

This act of wrapping a newborn in fabric marks the beginning of an important relationship with clothing. From that moment onward, clothing becomes a symbol of warmth, comfort, and protection, vital for the baby’s survival and well-being. It signifies the start of a lifelong journey, establishing an emotional and physical connection between the individual and the garments they wear.

Clothing and Identity

For those familiar with the Harry Potter series, the scene where Dobby, the house-elf, receives his first piece of clothing—his liberation in the form of a simple sock—serves as a powerful metaphor. In the Wizarding World, house elves are bound by servitude to their wizarding masters, and the act of being given clothing embodies a profound transformation. When Harry hands Dobby a sock, it inadvertently grants him freedom, fulfilling a magical contract that states that clothing is the key to emancipation. This pivotal moment marks Dobby’s transition from subservience to autonomy, allowing him to make choices for himself and to carve out his own identity and destiny.

Similarly, being swaddled in our first piece of clothing is a crucial milestone in our lives. It marks the inception of our connection to fabric, which serves as a representation of our identity and belonging. As children, our clothing choices are often dictated by our families, reflecting cultural traditions, values, and history. These early experiences with clothing are more than just about style; they shape our understanding of who we are and inform our identities as we grow. The lessons learned from our families regarding clothing, comfort, and identity are passed down through generations, creating a rich tapestry of connections that weave through our lives.

The influence of family continues to resonate throughout our lives, shaping our choices long into adulthood. The clothing we choose often echoes our upbringing—comfort, warmth, and even a sense of legacy. Although styles may evolve over time, the underlying connections to cultural

expressions can still be deeply felt in our choices today. Whether it’s the colors, fabrics, or styles we gravitate toward, they often tell a story of our origins and hint at the journeys we undertake.

How Clothing Reflects Identity

How have your clothing choices been influenced by the family you were born into? Perhaps there’s a memory of one of the first pieces of clothing you wore as a child that symbolizes your connection to your origins and the values instilled in you.

• Personal style: A unique combination of clothing, accessories, and grooming that reflects our individual preferences .

• Cultural identity: Clothing can reflect our ethnic background, traditions, and heritage.

• Gender identity: Clothing can be a way to express our gender identity, whether intentionally or not.

• Lifestyle and values: Our fashion choices can align with our lifestyle and values. Clothing allows us to communicate our individuality to others and adapt our style to different situations and environments, reflecting our evolving sense of self. It can empower us by enhancing our confidence and self-esteem. When we are comfortable in our clothing and appearance, we are more likely to project a positive self-image, which can significantly impact our interactions and relationships with others.

As we navigate life, our relationship with clothing becomes increasingly complex, evolving alongside our experiences. Clothing serves not only as a means of protection but also as a canvas for self-expression, allowing us to explore various facets of our identities. It encapsulates our past while providing a means to engage with the present and imagine our future.

The Science of Red Light Therapy and Its Benefits for Skin Health

“Hyper-

pigmentation and sun damage are common concerns that develop due to excess melanin production. Red light therapy can help fade discoloration by accelerating cell turnover and reducing oxidative stress, making it a promising option for individuals seeking to achieve a more even skin tone.”

—Maritza Camerl

In the pursuit of healthy, radiant skin, many treatments promise results—but few are as backed by science as red light therapy (RLT). Originally developed by NASA to promote wound healing in astronauts, this non-invasive technology has become a game-changer in skincare. By harnessing specific wavelengths of light, RLT works at the cellular level to boost collagen, reduce inflammation, and accelerate skin repair. Whether you’re looking to smooth fine lines, calm acne, or restore a youthful glow, this cutting-edge therapy offers a gentle yet powerful way to improve skin health naturally.

How Red Light Therapy Works

Red light therapy, also known as low-level light therapy (LLLT) or photobiomodulation (PBM), utilizes specific wavelengths of red (600–700 nm) and near-infrared (700–1100 nm) light. Unlike ultraviolet (UV) light, which damages skin cells, red and near-infrared light interact with mitochondria—the energy-producing centers of cells—to stimulate adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production.

ATP fuels cellular repair and regeneration, allowing skin cells to function more efficiently. This process has been shown to increase collagen and elastin synthesis, improve circulation, reduce oxidative stress, and enhance the skin’s ability to heal itself.

Benefits of Red Light Therapy for Skin Health

Collagen is a critical protein responsible for maintaining skin firmness and elasticity. As we age,

collagen production naturally declines, leading to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. A study published in the Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology found that red light therapy stimulates fibroblast activity, resulting in increased collagen synthesis and significant improvements in skin texture and tone. Regular treatments can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and improve overall skin resilience.

Inflammation plays a major role in skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, and general skin irritation. Red light therapy has been shown to reduce proinflammatory cytokines, leading to a calming effect on the skin.

Research published in Photomedicine and Laser Surgery demonstrated that red light therapy significantly reduced inflammation and promoted faster healing in patients with acne vulgaris. By decreasing redness and swelling, this therapy offers a gentle yet effective approach for those with sensitive or reactive skin.

Hyperpigmentation and sun damage are common concerns that develop due to excess melanin production. Red light therapy can help fade discoloration by accelerating cell turnover and reducing oxidative stress, making it a promising option for individuals seeking to achieve a more even skin tone.

Red light therapy also supports wound healing and scar reduction. By promoting tissue repair, the treatment can help minimize post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and improve the appearance of acne scars or surgical marks. Increased circulation delivers essential nutrients to the skin, further enhancing the body’s natural healing processes.

A healthy skin barrier is essential for hydration and protection against environmental damage. Red light therapy strengthens the outermost layer of the skin by reinforcing intercellular connections and improving moisture retention. This results in smoother, more hydrated skin with greater resilience to external stressors.

Integrating Red Light Therapy into Skincare Treatments

Red light therapy can be used as a standalone treatment or in combination with other skincare therapies to maximize results. Hydrating facials enhance moisture retention and plump the skin, while exfoliation improves light penetration and stimulates cell renewal. Antioxidant-rich serums complement red light therapy by reducing oxidative stress and supporting overall skin health. Professional estheticians can tailor treatments to individual skin concerns, ensuring optimal benefits from red light therapy. Its noninvasive nature makes it suitable for most skin types and a viable alternative to more aggressive cosmetic procedures.

A Brighter Future for Your Skin

Red light therapy offers a unique, science-backed approach to improving skin health without invasive procedures or harsh chemicals. As research continues to uncover its full potential, it’s clear that light-based treatments are more than just a passing trend—they’re a promising tool for longterm skin wellness.

By supporting natural collagen production, reducing inflammation, and enhancing overall skin function, red light therapy provides a gentle yet effective way to care for your skin at a cellular level. Whether incorporated into a professional skincare regimen or as part of a broader wellness routine, its benefits are practical and well-supported by science. As we learn more about the relationship between light and skin health, treatments like red light therapy may continue to play a key role in how we approach skincare in the future.

Maritza Camerl, a licensed esthetician, is dedicated to holistic approaches that support the body’s natural healing and overall well-being. Healing the Physical Through Akashic Wisdom

“The Records affirm that the brain is highly malleable; shifting one’s energetic vibration can rewire neural pathways, promoting neuroplasticity and cognitive resilience. Practices such as sound healing, sacred geometry, and intentional visualization can enhance brain function, improve memory, and support longevity.”

The Akashic Records are believed to be a metaphysical archive of every soul’s journey, containing wisdom about past lives, present realities, and future possibilities. By exploring longevity and brain health through the lens of the Akashic Records, we might uncover insights beyond conventional science—wisdom that integrates spiritual, energetic, and karmic influences on our cognitive well-being and lifespan.

Longevity in the Akashic Records suggests that lifespan is influenced by one’s soul agreements and mission in this lifetime. Some souls choose long lifespans to fulfill intricate karmic lessons, while others may have shorter lifetimes for specific spiritual growth. Aligning with one’s divine purpose can enhance vitality and extend life by reducing resistance and stress, allowing energy to flow more freely through the body and mind.

Past life experiences, unresolved traumas, and karmic debts can also impact physical longevity. Healing past wounds through Akashic wisdom can remove energetic blockages affecting health, restoring balance on a cellular and spiritual level. Breaking negative karmic cycles—such as patterns of stress, self-neglect, unhealthy relationships, or generational trauma—can lead to a more harmonious and extended life. The Records suggest that maintaining a high vibrational frequency through joy, love, and spiritual alignment strengthens both the body and mind. Meditation, energy healing, and working with Akashic wisdom can activate the body’s innate ability to heal and regenerate, enhancing overall well-being.

The Akashic field is thought to be a higherdimensional source of knowledge, with the brain acting as a receiver. A healthy brain allows for a clearer connection to divine wisdom and intuition, facilitating access to higher realms of consciousness. Practices such as deep meditation, energy work, breathwork, and intuitive development can enhance this connection, allowing for profound insights and inner clarity.

Negative thought patterns and subconscious programming can create energetic imbalances in the brain, limiting one’s ability to access higher wisdom and maintain cognitive health. Accessing the Records can help rewrite mental scripts, shifting from fear-based conditioning to expansive, possibility-driven thinking. The Records affirm that the brain is highly malleable; shifting one’s energetic vibration can rewire neural pathways, promoting neuroplasticity and cognitive resilience. Practices such as sound healing, sacred geometry, and intentional visualization can enhance brain function, improve memory, and support longevity. I can help you uncover hidden factors affecting your brain health and longevity. By asking the right questions while accessing the Records—such as exploring personal habits, past-life influences, and energetic blockages—you can gain insights into key lifestyle changes that support both cognitive and physical longevity. Implementing a spiritual practice, such as daily energy clearing, affirmations, and alignment with your soul’s purpose, can enhance well-being, leading to a life filled with grace, clarity, and vitality.
