Solving the case, she offers all-natural solutions to restore optimal health. If you’re like most of her patients, you are seeking an alternative or complement to conventional medicine. You want to get to the root cause of your health issues rather than take medications for the rest of your life. You prefer to live a life of wellness.

Hey, I’m Dr. Diane!

Fallis here, and it’s time for everything pumpkin, apples, cider, and spices! In the last few years, I’ve really been able to embrace this time of year instead of dreading it, knowing that winter comes next. I really do love the warm days but cooler nights, county fairs, the changing leaves, and changing my wardrobe to boots and jeans.

This month, we have some great articles on how to boost your immune system naturally, managing stress and anxiety, and natural treatments for seasonal depression. Check out CT’s Top Holistic Psychotherapists, Hypnotherapists, and Coaches. There are also some great tips and insights in this issue to help you heal your body and stay healthy this winter. Since I’ve been doing more meditating, I’ve found that one of the ways to stay healthy is to focus daily on what I’m grateful for.

Practicing gratitude is a fundamental component of the law of attraction and learning how to manifest your ideal life. The theory is that to bring what you want into your life, you have to be grateful for what you already have, and you have to give thanks for what you receive in the future. This enables a constant flow of positive energy into and out of your life. If you are not thankful for what you receive, it will block the flow, and you will have a difficult time attracting what you want.

The act of practicing gratitude makes us better people. Take a minute to see how you feel after the next time you thank someone for something. Doesn’t it give you a nice, warm feeling? And how do you feel when you should have said thank you, but didn’t? Not as nice a feeling, right?

Think of all the opportunities you have to show gratitude every day:

• Thank your spouse for getting up early with the kids so you can sleep in.

• Thank your kids for cleaning up their room.

• Thank the server who waits on you for dinner.

• Show gratitude to the person who bags your groceries at the market.

Practicing the fine art of gratitude is among our most important positive emotions and links directly to physical and mental well-being. There is a special kind of magic in gratitude—raising our consciousness, boosting our energy, and enhancing our self-worth.

Wishing you health and happiness,

“Practicing the fine art of gratitude is among our most important positive emotions and links directly to physical and mental well-being.”

BOOSTIE™: Real, Healthy Food at Your Fingertips!

The unique mission of BOOSTIE™ is to simplify healthy eating. In a society where an organic “protein” bar may not actually be a healthy choice, we aim to provide quick and easy food that truly benefits our bodies.

The real value of BOOSTIE™ is found in the sprouted nuts and seeds it contains—the only type of nuts and seeds that offer a powerhouse of nutrients. Each ingredient was chosen purposefully and with intention, and I added cacao nibs for additional nutritional value.

In addition to being healthful, BOOSTIE™ is super convenient. After a long day or when traveling, cooking may not be a convenient option. Adding either BOOSTIE PINK LEMONADE or RASPBERRY to good quality plain yogurt provides a fast, complete meal—and because BOOSTIE™ is nutrient-dense, you’ll feel full and satisfied.

BOOSTIE NAKED is low in sodium and rich in vitamins, minerals, micronutrients, plant protein, fiber, omega-3s, and electrolytes. The PINK LEMONADE and RASPBERRY versions are perfect for intense exercisers, athletes, and people over the age of 50. Why? We need them! If you are in one of these groups, your great health depends on them.

Electrolytes are incredibly important for many physiological processes in the body, including hydration, nerve function, muscle function, pH balance, blood pressure regulation, heart function, and kidney function. As minerals that carry an electric charge, they enable our body to quickly absorb and utilize the water we drink. Maintaining the right balance of electrolytes helps ensure that your body’s systems function optimally.

Try our BOOSTIE™ sample pack of six so you can decide which you love the most!

BOOSTIE™ is an essential food in her anti-inflammatory daily eating program, and she began packing it, by request, for her family and friends. Desiring good health for all, her company was born. Activate Your Sacred Energy

Sacrum

Navitas is a natural medicine center.

Our specialty is working personally with clients to guide, support, and treat them on their journey to wellness. In Latin, Sacrum Navitas means “sacred energy” or “sacred life.” The Sacrum Navitas Healing Philosophy is to enlighten the general public about the astounding world of natural medicine and ancient knowledge.

After struggling with her personal health, founder Clara O’Leary decided she wanted to learn how to treat herself holistically. At 19, she enrolled in classes to learn about herbalism. Little did she know that she would discover she wanted to make a career out of herbal medicine and soon found herself enrolled in a three-year clinical program.

While putting herself through clinical training and teaching yoga on the side, she also began studying to become a Reiki master and obtained all three levels.

Throughout her years of curious exploration of the world of medicine, Clara discovered many interests and passions. One, though, seemed to take the front burner: advocacy for women’s health. This led her to decide she wanted to become a doula. Clara completed her doula training in 2024 and has begun to take on patients, helping expecting mothers experience positive and comfortable births.

Clara’s personal health struggles and life experiences led her to find a passion for natural medicine and develop a desire to help others. She hopes to continue to grow her practitioner repertoire and act as a facilitator for natural medicine to improve people’s lives.

Today, Clara applies her diverse expertise to work one-on-one with clients, focusing on healing their minds, bodies, emotions, and spirits. Her approach combines clinical herbalism, energetic medicine, alternative therapies, and support for diet, exercise, and self-care, aiming to provide comprehensive wellness solutions.

CT’s Top Holistic Psychotherapy, Hypnotherapy, and Coaching

Holistic psychotherapy uses traditional methods of psychotherapy along with nontraditional approaches to accomplish the deepest level of healing possible. The mind, body, and spirit are viewed as one unit, working in harmony and seeking integration and balance.

Life Coaches guide you to specific business and personal goals and transitions in many areas of your life. They help you grow by analyzing your current situation, identifying limiting beliefs and obstacles you face, and devising a custom plan of action to help you achieve your goals.

Hypnotherapy is a type of psychological therapy that uses hypnosis to help treat certain mental and physical health conditions. It can also be used to change habits.

Lori A. Noto, PhD Noto Holistic Consulting

Istartedmy life coaching practice to address a need I observed while teaching university courses and in my consulting work with disabled adults. The courses I taught prepared future teachers and administrators to work in K-12 educational settings, and the students in these courses consistently came to me for mentoring and guidance, especially in the current very stressful educational environment. The disabled adults I work with were also regularly seeking mentoring and guidance.

My adult life has been marked by a consistent role as a guide, mentor, and support system for those around me. This unofficial role, which I held for many years, eventually led me to pursue a life coaching certification. My genuine interest in the health and well-being of others, coupled with a passion for serving and advocating for those who may be marginalized, forms the bedrock of my coaching and consulting practice.

My practice is designed to support individuals facing personal and professional obstacles. I specialize in teacher and administrator wellness, as well as the well-being of human service and other support service professionals. I also work with graduate students and disabled individuals and their families, offering guidance and support tailored to their unique circumstances.

As a life coach, I love watching my clients grow and find their purpose. It brings me joy when I am able to assist clients in overcoming obstacles, recharging and restoring their focus, reducing stress, building self-understanding, and creating a blissful life.

Donna Bunte Whole Health

In my 20s and 30s, I discovered holistic nutrition, Chinese medicine, and acupuncture when I was successfully treated for some serious health issues. This inspired me to study and become a natural health practitioner myself. Since 1996, I have been practicing as a holistic health and Chinese medicine practitioner, herbalist, licensed acupuncturist, and integrative nutrition health coach.

Qigong and meditation have also been my passions for many years, and I enjoy teaching these techniques to help people find balance in their lives. Over the years, I realized that many of my clients needed not just health coaching and solutions but guidance for their entire life. This realization led me to get trained and certified in what I call “Whole Life Coaching,” a holistic approach that addresses the body, mind, and spirit. I am particularly drawn to working with women who are at a transition or turning point in life—those who may have set aside their passions to raise a family or take a job they may not love. These women are now ready to reinvent themselves but may not know where or how to start.

As women and caregivers, we excel at taking care of everyone else and often put ourselves last. However, by burying our creativity and dreams, we risk losing the spark that lights up our lives. Through holistic life coaching, I guide women to balance their body, mind, and spirit so they can find new directions, feel inspired and passionate, and have a positive outlook on life.

Mind’s Eye Hypnosis

Aproduct of life’s best and worst experiences, Mind’s Eye Hypnosis was born from my battles with the weight of family trauma and the freeing healing power of hypnosis. My journey to becoming a hypnotist began with a painful break between my mother and me that spiraled me into a debilitating depression. After exhausting all traditional methods of therapy with very little improvement in my emotional or physical state, my husband suggested I try hypnosis, and I thought, why not? The sessions that followed would change the course of my life in the best way.

Experiencing the profound and permanent change that hypnosis made in healing my trauma moved me to become a licensed hypnotist so that I may help others heal the way I did. I am now the founder and owner of Mind’s Eye Hypnosis, based in Simsbury, CT, where I specialize in trauma release via Root Cause and Spiritual Hypnosis. My sessions are tailored to your specific needs to ensure the full release of trauma, negative emotions, and limiting beliefs.

My Healthy Eating Weight Release Program is well-known for working to restructure your perspective of food and reform your relationship with it, achieving a healthier weight and lifestyle. I also serve as a Spiritual Coach and Teacher via my Path for Discovery courses, which combine hypnosis, spiritual coaching, and life coaching to connect you with your most diving energy.

Transformational Life Coach In the Mix Coaching, LLC

Struggling with my own anxiety and self-esteem issues, I embarked on a personal growth journey to feel more joy. My goal is to always be approachable. I know how difficult it can feel to start something new. I understand the power of thoughts and self-limiting beliefs. I believe in harnessing the power of our minds to enact lasting change. As a registered nurse, board-certified in psychiatric-mental health nursing and certified in nurse coaching, I specialize in transformative life coaching.

As a holistic practitioner, my greatest joy comes from knowing that I’m living in harmony with my values. I understand the profound impact of being seen and heard in a nonjudgmental way. I’ve seen the transformative power of envisioning a future self and making it a reality. I consider this process a divine experience, and I’m deeply honored to be part of someone’s journey.

When we live in our truth and integrity, we are supported by a knowing universe. All the knowledge, wisdom, and understanding are already inside of us. I help people slow down and learn to hear the quiet voice of wisdom that already exists within them. Living in harmony with our thoughts and feelings lends itself to hope, peace, and promise.

This effect extends to our health, our relationships, and our environments.

Christine Bilotti Peterson High Performance Coach and RTT Practitioner

Longview Vitality | Longview Consulting

AtLongview Vitality, we are dedicated to helping business owners, leaders, and professionals unlock their peak performance and achieve personal and professional success. Through a holistic approach, we combine executive coaching with high-performance methodologies to enhance emotional intelligence, clarify goals, and connect individuals to their true purpose. Our personalized high-performance protocols not only improve mental and physical health but also remove limiting beliefs, empowering our clients to lead more fulfilling, purpose-driven, and prosperous lives to help make a greater impact on the world.

After spending 25 years working with C-level executives, I realized that success isn’t just about professional achievements—it’s about finding balance between career, happiness, and personal fulfillment. My passion for holistic coaching was born out of my own experience with burnout, where I faced the consequences of putting myself last. It wasn’t until I incorporated wellness, self-care, and mindset work that I achieved peak performance in my own life. At 50, I discovered cognitive behavioral therapy, neurolinguistic programming, hypnotherapy, and meditation, which helped me heal childhood trauma and overcome a 35-year emotional eating disorder through rapid transformational therapy. This profound experience drove me to integrate these powerful tools into my practice, helping others who, like me, struggled with stress, limiting beliefs, and lack of purpose.

Our unique blend of mindset reprogramming and executive development sets us apart, allowing clients to not only achieve professional prosperity but also experience deep personal and spiritual growth. We guide high-achievers to align their inner well-being with their outer goals, transforming them into fulfilled, purpose-driven leaders.

One of my greatest joys as a holistic practitioner is witnessing my clients reach new heights of success, whether it’s through business and career success, life achievements, or breakthroughs in self-development. While I’m always grateful for the acknowledgment of client success, the truth is that my role is to bring out the best in them—they do the hard work. I create the space, provide the tools, and facilitate the process, but they are the ones transforming their lives and the lives of their clients and customers. Some of my favorite moments happen during retreats, where I get to watch people evolve over a weekend—experimenting with yoga, gaining clarity, or having profound epiphanies. It’s these experiences that remind me why I’m so passionate about this work. When we prioritize our own well-being, we can help others reach their full potential, multiplying the positive impact on the world.

Jenny Alzate, LPC, LLC

Integrative Psychotherapist

The Enlightenment Counseling Center

The Enlightenment Counseling Center is a clinical group practice made of licensed psychotherapists that provide a holistic approach to improving and healing your mental health.

It is our mission to help our patients heal mind, body, and spirit so they can achieve mental and emotional wellness. Each clinician offers their own unique blend of integrative psychotherapy by combining traditional psychotherapy with complementary and alternative medicine. To address your mental health needs, we provide clinical interventions such as EMDR, DBT, TF-CBT, CBT, and IFS.

Our clinicians are certified yoga instructors, Reiki practitioners, expressive arts therapists, and mindfulness-based stress reduction teachers, mind-body and energy medicine trained and certified. All of these modalities support the calming and resetting of the central nervous system.

We understand that our mental health is heavily affected by unprocessed emotional wounds and painful life experiences that have continued to impact our lives and decisions unconsciously. This leads to depression, anxiety, PTSD, and many other mental disbalances.

As integrative psychotherapists, we focus on empowering our clients with not only clinical support and stabilization but, ideally, in supporting them in making lifestyle changes that nourish and sustain the healed versions of themselves. Some of these lifestyle changes are around nutrition, integration of affirmations and positive self-talk, working with the law of attraction and manifestation, increased body movement, meditation, yoga, and breathwork.

The ECC is here to help you clinically and by using complementary and alternative medicine to help you find improved health, inner peace, and happiness. We are currently accepting new clients in both Hartford and West Hartford offices. Please call the referral line at 860.729.3284 or check out our website at enlightenmentcenterct.com. The Energetics of Acupuncture

“When an acupuncture needle is introduced, a signal is sent through the fascial network to the spinal cord and brain, then back to the needle, providing instant feedback. In this sense, an acupuncturist is working to ’rewire’ how the brain views the tissue being stimulated bringing the body back into balance, relieving symptoms.”

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is one system of diagnostics and treatment within the realm of East Asian Medicine. Practitioners often develop their own “style” of treatment based on their teachings in Chinese medical school and their clinical experience. This medicine can work in many ways due to its emphasis on the energetics of the mind and body in addition to the physical connections. Treatments have a cumulative effect; however, the effects can sometimes be felt immediately.

Acupuncture Is an Energetic and Physical Medicine—But What Does This Mean?

Each physical action begins with an energetic thought. If a person decides they want to gain muscle, that decision is an energetic thought. However, the only way they will gain muscle is if they follow through with the physical action of training those muscles.

Even in Western medicine, it is understood that the body contains measurable energetics. For example, the electrical impulses of the heart beating are measured with an echocardiogram (EKG), while the electrical activity of the brain is measured through an electroencephalogram (EEG).

The fascia, a lesser-known conductive tissue, is a weblike structure, similar to nylon or spandex, that wraps around every organ, muscle, tendon, ligament, nerve, spinal cord, and brain and creates an interconnectedness among them. It is made primarily of collagen, which has a triple helix piezoelectric structure; piezoelectric means it conducts

electricity when a stimulus is introduced, such as an acupuncture needle, and it carries an electrical current quickly and efficiently.

The fascia can be compared to an eight-lane highway rather than a nerve, which is comparable to a one-lane road. When an acupuncture needle is introduced, a signal is sent through the fascial network to the spinal cord and brain, then back to the needle, providing instant feedback. In this sense, an acupuncturist is working to “rewire” how the brain views the tissue being stimulated bringing the body back into balance, relieving symptoms. These internal channels that develop are called “meridians,” and the energy that is conducted is “qi.”

Where Attention Goes, Energy Flows

Unfortunately, modern life is taxing on the mind and body. A person’s attention is spread thin and externally (versus internally, or within), to phones, driving, and an ever-growing list of tasks and responsibilities. For most people, downtime consists of screen time, which still places attention externally. Much like when that person on the phone finds himself in a slumped position and starts to feel a backache, that cue refocuses the attention on how he is holding his body; with that awareness, he can respond by adjusting positions.

When a person brings attention back to their body and mind, true healing can happen.

Depending on what is being treated and how long a patient has had a condition, treatment effects may only last for a few days; the body and mind will always choose the path of least resistance, especially when they are struggling for resources such as time and energy. Bad habits start to be unconsciously formed, slowly weakening the internal network between mind and body.

As the treatment of acupuncture “rewires” this network, it shunts blood and energy down the healthy pathways. The habitual pathways we have formed are still strong, so the internal mind and body default to those; however, the more treatments a person can get and the closer they are together, the stronger and faster the body will rewire to the healthier pathways. This process will begin to clear bothersome symptoms such as headaches, eczema, acne, digestive problems, and more.

Acupuncture also works with the body’s natural intelligence. If someone were to cut herself, she might support her healing with a bandage or ointment, but there is no need to tell the body how to mend the skin back together. Our body knows how to heal itself if given a chance.

Adding adjunctive therapies to a session such as internal herbal medicine, tui na, shiatsu, moxibustion, cupping, and gua sha will also aid the healing process. Furthermore, incorporating lifestyle changes around nutrition and diet, breathing exercises, sleep habits, and restorative physical exercises such as qi gong or tai chi will help keep the healthy pathways strong.

Like going to the gym a few times per week, adding acupuncture multiple times per week will help with the cumulative effect and forge healthy internal pathways so the body and mind can heal more quickly.

Mind, Body, and Spirit— and Your Akashic Records

“By accessing the Records, we tap into this source of wisdom and energy, which can inspire and support us in our personal and spiritual development. The insights from the Records can help us release old patterns, heal emotional wounds, and align with our highest potential.”

The mind, body, and spirit are deeply linked to the Akashic Records—a cosmic library containing all information about our souls’ journeys. By harmonizing these three aspects of ourselves, we can better understand our soul’s journey, heal past wounds, and move forward with clarity and purpose.

This holistic approach can transform our lives, guiding us toward a path of grace, ease, light, and flow. The Akashic Records offer a profound source of guidance and support, helping us to live in alignment with our true essence and highest potential. Through this connection, we can create a more harmonious and fulfilling existence, individually and collectively.

Mind

The mind plays a critical role in accessing the Records; it serves as a bridge between our everyday thoughts and the deeper spiritual realm. By practicing meditation, visualization, and mindfulness, we can quiet our minds and tune into the Records, allowing us to gain insights and guidance and helping us understand unresolved issues, past life effects, and future possibilities.

The clarity and wisdom we receive can help us make decisions and understand our lives more deeply. When our minds are still and open, we are able to connect with the higher frequencies, allowing a clearer and more direct download of information.

Body

The body is essential for experiencing and integrating the wisdom from the Records. It grounds our spiritual experiences in the physical world. Practices like yoga and energy healing help align the body’s energy centers (chakras), enhancing our connection to the Records.

By listening to our bodies and caring for our physical well-being, we can turn spiritual insights into practical actions and decisions, promoting overall healing and growth. Engaging in physical activities that promote energy flow and relaxation creates a favorable state for receiving and manifesting spiritual knowledge.

Spirit

The spirit is our essence that directly connects with the Records. It carries the memories and lessons of all our lifetimes. Engaging with the Records through the spirit involves opening our hearts to divine wisdom and love. This connection can be strengthened through prayer, setting intentions, and developing a relationship with higher realms.

The spirit receives deep insights about its purpose, gifts, and lessons, leading to spiritual alignment and fulfillment. When we approach the Records with an open and loving heart, we are more likely to receive messages that resonate deeply and provide meaningful guidance for our spiritual journey.

Accessing the Wisdom and Energy of the Akashic Records

The Records are more than just a reservoir of information; they are a living, dynamic field of energy and consciousness. This field is constantly evolving, reflecting the ongoing growth of the souls that interact with it. By accessing the Records, we tap into this source of wisdom and energy, which can inspire and support us in our personal and spiritual development. The insights from the Records can help us release old patterns, heal emotional wounds, and align with our highest potential, allowing us to live more authentically in harmony with our true selves and the greater universe.

Both

Are

Genetic Variants, Personal Choices, and Disease

“Many human diseases, such as cancer, neurodegenerative disease, and autoimmune disorders, as well as psychiatric disorders and mental illness, can result from the choices we make in how we live our lives. Genes provide potential for disease, but they are not our destiny.”

—Jacob Appleton and Dr. Deanna Cherrone, MD

Humansare 99.9% genetically identical to each other, so how significant is that 0.1% difference when it comes to health? It turns out that the more we learn about the human genome, the more we realize that it can make quite a difference, especially regarding disease susceptibility. An extreme example is trisomy 21, more commonly known as Down syndrome, where an extra copy of chromosome 21 is inserted into the genome. Genetic variation, along with a variety of environmental and lifestyle factors, can impact gene expression and how the enzymes that run all of the chemical processes going on in our body function. When these reactions are disrupted, symptoms or disease can result.

During conception when the sperm and egg come together, half the genetic code from each parent is passed down to the child in the form of chromosomes. Each chromosome carries hundreds to thousands of genes. Genes code for proteins and enzymes that allow us to take food, water, oxygen, and sunlight and produce energy for the body.

Genetic Variants and Disease

Genetic variation refers to changes in the DNA sequence. These variants can cause a gene to be more active, less active, or to have no effect at all. Another significant factor is whether the variant

is homozygous or heterozygous. Homozygous refers to both parents donating the variated gene, and heterozygous is when only one parent passes on the variant. Heterozygous gene activity can be 70 to 80 percent of normal (wild type), whereas homozygous variants can have as low as 30 percent activity. There are exceptions to this rule, as is the case when there is an upregulation or “gain of function” variant where the activity of the gene is increased.

Genetic variants can explain why some people have symptoms while others do not. For example; The ABP1 and HNMT genes create enzymes that break down a chemical in our body called histamine. The immune system releases histamine in response to a foreign toxin, pathogen, or allergen, and foods such as bananas, avocados, and fermented and packaged foods contain large amounts of histamine. The inability to break down histamine efficiently sets us up for excess inflammation, which we know contributes to symptoms of disease. High histamine is also implicated in allergies, anxiety, headaches/migraines, insomnia, brain fog, skin rashes, dizziness, IBS, diarrhea, bloating, nausea, constipation, and painful menstrual periods. Exposure to mold, extremes of hot and cold temperatures, Lyme, pesticides, and plastics can trigger a histamine release. Knowing that you have

a genetic susceptibility to high histamine allows you to be more intentional with your choices. Specifically, it allows for the implementation of dietary and lifestyle changes as well as supplementation with specific nutrients to help the body break down histamine.

Another gene that has the potential for impact on someone’s day-to-day life is the CYP1A2 gene. This gene is directly involved in the breakdown of caffeine. Variations in this gene offer an explanation as to why some people tolerate caffeine better than others.

Individuals with homozygous variants on this gene metabolize caffeine much slower. It has been hypothesized that the half-life (the time it takes to eliminate half of the substance from the body) of caffeine in these individuals can be up to 9.5 hours or longer! No wonder you can’t sleep, even though your last cup of coffee was at 10:00 a.m.

Epigenetics

The interplay between your environment and your genes is called epigenetics. Epigenetics affects the way genes are expressed without changing their DNA sequencing. Epigenetic factors include sleep, stress, exercise/ movement, diet, exposure to pathogens and toxins, drugs, supplements, and over-the-counter medications. Many human diseases, such as cancer, neurodegenerative disease, and autoimmune disorders, as well as psychiatric disorders and mental illness, can result from the choices we make in how we live our lives. Genes provide potential for disease, but they are not our destiny. With this information, we realize we have much more control over whether we are healthy based on our lifestyle choices.

Unlocking Wellness: The Health Benefits of Sauna, Cold Plunge, and Thermography

“Regular

use of saunas and cold plunges can enhance cardiovascular health, boost the immune system, reduce stress, and aid in muscle recovery. Thermography adds a layer of precision, allowing for the early detection and monitoring of potential health issues.”

—April Beaman, RDH, CTT

Saunas and cold plunges have gained popularity for their remarkable health benefits, particularly in boosting the immune system. These age-old therapies, rooted in various cultural traditions, have been shown to enhance overall health, aid in recovery, and support a robust immune system. Additionally, advancements in thermography provide a sophisticated tool to assess and monitor health, creating a holistic approach to wellness.

The Healing Heat of Saunas

The use of saunas dates back centuries and is deeply rooted in various cultures around the world. Sauna therapy involves exposing the body to high temperatures, typically ranging from 150°F to 195°F, which induces several physiological responses that enhance overall health. The health benefits of saunas are multifaceted:

1. Cardiovascular Health: Regular sauna use is associated with improved cardiovascular function. The heat causes blood vessels to dilate, increasing blood flow and reducing blood pressure. This process mimics moderate exercise, providing a gentle workout for the heart.

2. Detoxification: Sweating is one of the body’s natural ways to eliminate toxins. Saunas induce heavy sweating, which can help flush out toxins and impurities from the body, promoting overall detoxification.

3.Stress Reduction: The heat from a sauna stimulates the release of endorphins, the body’s natural “feel-good” chemicals. This can lead to reduced stress levels, improved mood, and a sense of relaxation and well-being.

4.Muscle Recovery: Athletes often use saunas to aid in muscle recovery. The increased blood flow helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to tired muscles, speeding up recovery and reducing muscle soreness.

The Invigorating Chill of Cold Plunges

Cold plunge therapy, also known as cold water immersion, involves immersing the body in cold water, typically between 50°F to 59°F (10°C to 15°C). This practice, with its long history, offers a unique set of health benefits:

1.Enhanced Circulation: Alternating between the heat of a sauna and the cold of a plunge stimulates circulation. The cold causes blood vessels to constrict and then dilate upon warming, improving overall blood flow and cardiovascular health.

2.Reduced Inflammation: Cold water immersion can reduce inflammation and swelling in muscles and joints, making it a popular choice for athletes and individuals with inflammatory conditions.

3.Boosted Immune System: Regular exposure to cold water is believed to strengthen the immune system. Cold plunges can increase white blood cell count and boost the production of endorphins, enhancing the body’s ability to fight off illnesses.

4.Mental Clarity and Mood Enhancement: The shock of cold water can lead to an immediate release of adrenaline and endorphins, resulting in increased alertness, mental clarity, and a noticeable boost in mood.

Thermography: A Modern Tool for Health Monitoring

While saunas and cold plunges offer significant health benefits, monitoring these effects and overall health requires precise tools. Thermography is an advanced, non-invasive imaging technique that measures the body’s surface temperature and can provide valuable insights into health.

1. Early Detection of Inflammation:

Thermography can detect areas of inflammation that may indicate underlying health issues. This practice allows for early intervention and treatment, potentially preventing more serious conditions.

2. Breast Health Monitoring:

Thermography is particularly useful in monitoring breast health. It can identify abnormal heat patterns that may indicate the presence of tumors or other issues, complementing traditional methods like mammography.

3. Tracking Circulatory Health:

By visualizing blood flow and identifying areas with poor circulation, thermography can help assess cardiovascular health and the effectiveness of interventions like sauna and cold plunge therapies.

4. Comprehensive Health Assessment:

Thermography provides a full-body scan that can highlight areas of concern, guiding individuals and healthcare providers in creating personalized wellness plans.

A Holistic Approach to Wellness

Combining traditional practices like sauna and cold plunge therapies with modern tools like thermography creates a comprehensive approach to wellness. Regular use of saunas and cold plunges can enhance cardiovascular health, boost the immune system, reduce stress, and aid in muscle recovery. Thermography adds a layer of precision, allowing for the early detection and monitoring of potential health issues.

As we continue to explore the intersections of ancient wisdom and modern science, these practices and technologies offer promising pathways to improved health and well-being. Embracing a holistic approach that includes both proactive wellness strategies and advanced monitoring tools can lead to a healthier, more balanced life.

BOOSTIETM: Clean, Sprouted Nutrition for Your Health

We“All our nuts, seeds, cacao nibs, and blueberries are grown on organic or regenerative farms. Regenerative farming is a step beyond organic— it rebuilds soil health and restores ecosystems, ensuring that what you eat is truly clean and pure.”

Rose, MS

live in a time when it’s increasingly difficult to determine the origin of our food and uncover the hidden ingredients. The FDA doesn’t require all ingredients to be listed, leaving many loopholes. Just this morning, I watched a video from a reliable source explaining how fake organic foods have now entered the marketplace. If you’re a “clean” eater like me, you’ve probably wondered what is truly organic, non-GMO, and free from harmful additives.

But How Do You Know What to Buy, and from Whom?

In my quest to only eat “clean” food, I get up very early every Saturday morning to shop at the most revered farmers market in Houston, TX. With our favorable weather, farmers can grow fruits and vegetables year-round. Having maintained a large organic garden for seven years—fourteen growing seasons—I know which fruits and vegetables are in season and which aren’t. Yet, the busiest stands at this farmers market are selling perfect-looking produce that I know is not in season!

Looking into this further, I discovered that the revered farmers market is billed as “local and organic.” If the vendor buys any produce from anywhere, and the vendor’s business is registered in Texas, the farmers market allows them to sell it as “local.” Oh my!

This experience was a wake-up call, reinforcing my commitment to knowing exactly where my food comes from. I began chatting with the vendors, asking the right questions, and listening carefully. Through these conversations, I could distinguish who was genuinely committed to clean food.

How Can You Be Sure Your Food Is as Clean and Nutritious as It Should Be?

That’s where BOOSTIE comes in.

BOOSTIE is a purposefully selected combination of ingredients (for their nutrient profile) from suppliers I’ve personally vetted. All of our nuts, seeds, cacao nibs, and blueberries are sourced from organic or regenerative farms. Regenerative farming is a step beyond organic—it rebuilds soil health and restores ecosystems, ensuring that what you eat is truly clean and pure.

But offering clean ingredients isn’t enough. The true power of BOOSTIE lies in its sprouted nuts and seeds.

Why Sprouted Nuts and Seeds Matter to You

Regular nuts and seeds are often considered healthy, but there’s more to the story. Non-sprouted nuts and seeds contain phytic acid and lectins, which can block the absorption of essential nutrients and can even cause inflammation. To unlock their full nutritional potential, nuts and seeds need to be sprouted (or activated).

In the sprouting process, the nuts and seeds are soaked in clean water and then gently air-dried, which removes the phytic acid and lectins, making the nutrients more bioavailable and easier for your body to absorb.

With BOOSTIE, you’re not just getting clean food—you’re getting superior nutrition. Each one-ounce package is a balanced meal, providing you with protein, fiber, vitamins (including antioxidants), micro-nutrients, minerals, omega-3s, amino acids, and electrolytes—all in a form your

body can fully utilize. Whether you’re looking to support heart health, boost your immunity, reduce inflammation, or simply stay energized, BOOSTIE is designed with your health in mind.

The Power of BOOSTIETM:

What the Community Says BOOSTIE is a complete meal that, when eaten five to seven times a week as a meal or snack, has many health benefits. BOOSTIE supports heart health, lowers blood pressure and cholesterol, helps with weight loss, boosts immunity, reduces inflammation, and helps hydrate your cells and organs.

Yes, these are a lot of claims, and our government won’t spend money on food studies. I have to rely on the testimonials from the BOOSTIETM community:

•“BOOSTIE has eliminated my need for over-thecounter pain meds. My joints no longer hurt.”

•“BOOSTIE has become my go-to snack. It’s convenient and delicious, and I love that it’s packed with nutrients that my body can actually absorb.

I’ve been eating it regularly, and I’ve seen a positive impact on my skin clarity and digestion.”

•“BOOSTIE has lowered my LDL by 40 points. My cardiologist was impressed.”

•“Since I started to enjoy BOOSTIE, I haven’t even gotten a sniffle.”

• “BOOSTIE really fills me up. It’s amazing, considering it’s only one ounce of food.”

If you’re looking for a convenient and trustworthy way to eat healthfully, I invite you to email or call me to discuss good health or try BOOSTIE. Experience the difference that clean, sprouted nuts and seeds can make in your well-being.

Oh, and a final important note: BOOSTIE isn’t just about nutrition—it’s about enjoyment! With a satisfying crunch and delicious taste, you will enjoy every bite of your BOOSTIE treat. I am excited to offer BOOSTIE—a one-of-a-kind food.

Countering Risks of Dental Care in Patients With Undiagnosed High Blood Pressure

“Almost everyone has experienced this automatic fight or flight reaction, accompanied by increased heart rate, causing a spike in blood pressure. Having dental work stimulates this response to some extent in all patients. To those living with undiagnosed elevated blood pressure, this can lead to severe untoward consequences.”

Inmy more than 40 years of providing clinical dental care to my patients, I have yet to hear a single individual say they were looking forward to getting the “dreaded” shot. The reaction to knowing that one must have a shot ranges from mild dislike and hyperalertness through various stages of anxiety and agitation to downright terror and fear.

The body’s innate physiological reaction is commonly called the fight-or-flight response, derived from the acute activation of the sympathetic nervous system with a protective, although exaggerated, discharge of the very powerful biochemical norepinephrine. This defense mechanism is based on the body’s keen sense of impending danger in the immediate environment and is often referred to as a stress reaction. Almost everyone has experienced this fight-orflight reaction, accompanied by increased heart rate, causing a spike in blood pressure.

Having dental work stimulates this response to some extent in all patients. To those living with undiagnosed elevated blood pressure, this can lead to severe untoward consequences.

Chronically elevated blood pressure has virtually no observable symptoms—it is “silent.” But its adverse effects can be devastating. The following is a short list of the risks from chronic unmanaged hypertension:

• Heart attack

• Stroke and transient cerebral ischemia

• Progressive heart failure

• Kidney disease and failure

• Vision loss

• Sexual dysfunction (ED; loss of sex drive)

• Cardiac dysfunction

• Atherosclerosis

• Dementia and other cognitive dysfunction

• Ruptured aneurysm (heart, brain, aorta)

The generally accepted ranges of hypertension as reported in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) are:

• Hypertensive crisis: >180 / >120

• Hypertension stage 2: >140 / >90

• Hypertension stage 1: 130–139 / 80–89

• Elevated BP: 120–129 / <80

• “Normal”: <120 / <80

Since dental care always stimulates the acute physiologic stress response, blood pressure screenings are recommended for all adults for every procedure. The American Dental Association recommends postponing care under the following circumstances:

• For urgent dental care, postpone treatment if BP is 180/110 or greater

• For elective dental care, postpone treatment if BP is 160/100 or greater. For a safer dental visit and your overall wellness, your dentist and hygienists screen you for hypertension, advise you of your present blood pressure status, and refer you to your personal physician to make the definitive diagnosis with potential recommendations and treatment if necessary.

Why Emotional Intelligence Matters

The“Emotionally

intelligent individuals make phenomenal leaders due to their resilience, optimism, and commitment to personal and professional growth. They stay calm under pressure, adapt to changing circumstances, and always strive to understand and share the feelings of others with empathy, which involves recognizing emotional cues, considering others’ perspectives, and responding with compassion.

topic of emotional intelligence is becoming a focal point in discussions among top thought leaders today, yet it remains an underdeveloped skill in many societies, essential for our healthy evolution amidst the surrounding noise. Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize, understand, and manage your emotions while also being able to recognize, understand, and manage others’ emotions without letting them affect you and how you live your daily life. It is crucial for effective communication, empathy, conflict resolution, and overall mental well-being.

The lack of emotional intelligence stems from our conditioned, unconscious patterns formed by the natural fight, flight, or hide responses of our ancestors living in survival mode. This state triggers stress, anxiety, and fear, diminishing the ability to think independently and making you reliant on others for validation and guidance. Every emotion you feel creates a neural pathway linked to previous experiences. When triggered, these pathways automatically generate reactions without conscious thought, perpetuating a cycle of impulsive reactions rather than thoughtful responses.

Unregulated emotions lead to heightened stress, anxiety, frustration, anger, and emotional outbursts. The inability to manage emotions effectively can make it harder to cope with setbacks and adversity, leading to self-sabotage, lack of confidence, self-worth, and even isolation in some cases. Lack of emotional intelligence can have far-reaching negative effects, impacting relationships, mental health, career success, and overall life satisfaction. Developing emotional intelligence is crucial for leading a balanced, fulfilling, and successful life.

Developing Emotional Intelligence

Those who choose to cultivate emotional intelligence can accurately perceive and understand emotions, as well as recognize their own strengths, weaknesses, and triggers. They

understand how these factors affect their thoughts and behavior and do not let others’ opinions influence their decision-making process. Emotionally intelligent individuals make phenomenal leaders due to their resilience, optimism, and commitment to personal and professional growth. They stay calm under pressure, adapt to changing circumstances, and always strive to understand and share the feelings of others with empathy, which involves recognizing emotional cues, considering others’ perspectives, and responding with compassion.

The ability to inspire and motivate others is a powerful result of emotional intelligence. Emotionally intelligent individuals can connect deeply with others, fostering a sense of trust and mutual respect. This connection allows them to effectively communicate a vision and goals, instilling enthusiasm and a shared sense of purpose. Their resilience and optimism are contagious, encouraging those around them to adopt a positive mindset and strive for excellence. It creates a supportive environment where people feel valued and heard, further enhancing motivation and inspiration. Ultimately, emotional intelligence not only transforms individual behavior but also elevates groups and communities, leading to greater collaboration, innovation, and success for all. They understand emotional intelligence is a “we” and not a “me.”

Nurturing Emotional Intelligence

So, how do I help create emotional intelligence in the lives of my clients? I show people how to become so conscious of themselves they can no longer remain unconscious. We begin by acknowledging and accepting that we all need to become more conscious of our emotional intelligence levels. Take time each day to reflect on your emotions and what triggers them. Create daily practices of mindfulness and meditation to better understand your feelings, your thoughts, and the

actions you take because of them. Stop worrying about what everyone else is doing and spend more time being curious about what motivates you. Being motivated by internal factors rather than external rewards actually enhances your emotional intelligence.

Learn to listen by creating a space for others without interrupting or planning your response. Share compassion by trying to understand situations from others’ viewpoints. Ask questions and seek to understand their emotions and motivations instead of assuming or stating they are wrong because you don’t agree. Work on your verbal and nonverbal communication skills. Believe it or not, your energy, body stance, and facial expressions share your thoughts and feelings before you do. Learn to practice clear, assertive, and respectful communication without emotions getting in your way. Invest time in building and maintaining relationships even when it feels hard. Show appreciation, provide support, and be open to collaboration. Remain grateful for every experience and every emotion as they are all discerning moments from which to learn, expand, and grow.

The journey to developing emotional intelligence is not an easy one, but it is immensely rewarding. By becoming more conscious of our own emotional states and learning to manage them effectively, we can break free from the conditioned responses that keep us in survival mode. Cultivating emotional intelligence requires daily practice, from mindfulness and meditation to active listening and empathetic communication. It’s about understanding and embracing our internal motivations and building meaningful relationships based on mutual respect and trust.

As we grow in emotional intelligence, we not only transform our own lives but also positively impact those around us, fostering environments where everyone can thrive. Ultimately, the development of emotional intelligence is a collective effort that can lead to a more compassionate, connected, and successful society. Let us commit to this journey of self-discovery and emotional growth, paving the way for a brighter, more harmonious future.

3 Reasons to Heal the Past to Find Relief From Chronic Pain

“As individuals, we have energetic patterns that are passed down from generations to generations—it is in our DNA.”
—Jacqueline Kane

Healing the past is so important for whole body healing. Learning where trauma hides in the body and what you can do to release your pain is an important part of releasing it. In this article, I share how physical, emotional, and spiritual trauma from the past can be the cause of your pain today.

1. Physical: How Past Emotional and Physical Trauma Can Contribute to Your Chronic Pain

Trauma in the body remains caught in the physical body and in our cells. We often think we have moved on, but our body is always telling us the truth. Physical pain shows up to let us know that there is a part of us that has not moved past the trauma. Usually, we are holding on to some sadness or anger or guilt, some emotion that is still residing in our cells and our body. That emotion needs to be honored before it can let go.

Have you ever noticed during the holidays when you visit your family and the days following you experience pain in your body? Maybe you were even exhausted and wiped out?

Do you notice that when you are with them you find yourself reverting back to your childhood and feeling like you have to be a certain way to fit into the family. You end up doing certain things because that is what they expect from you?

In that moment we find that we do things because of our programming and not because we want to. It is after a few days that we start to wonder why we did that, why we acted that way.

Then the pain shows up as we criticize ourselves for how we acted or what we said. Criticizing ourselves again for not being true to ourselves. For not speaking up. For not saying no.

How Past Trauma Can Show Up in Your Body

For example, my client Terry had had pain in her body for 30 years. And every day she felt the effects of fibromyalgia, arthritis, shoulder pain, and low back pain. It all started from a back injury picking up a child from the floor in her classroom. She had been to doctors, been on medications, and had physical therapy to reduce her pain. Yet, her pain intensity level was still a nine out of ten...every single day.

As we worked together, she discovered that she was doing a lot for others, all the time... putting their needs before her own. Even when she was in a great deal of pain she was always doing for others.

As we worked together it became clear that she was angry that she never got recognized or appreciated for what she did, although that was not why she did it. Terry really loves doing things for other people and helping everybody, but deep inside, there was a part of her that felt that she didn’t matter. That led her to believe she ‘should’ do these things for others.

As we transformed Terry’s beliefs of obligation: “I should…, I have to” and “others come first,” Terry’s physical pain started to decrease and has continued to decrease year after year.

“ REFLECTION: Where in your life are you not being you? Can you relate to Terry?”

2. Emotional: How Your SelfSabotaging Beliefs and Thoughts Affect Your Chronic Pain

When we experience trauma, little or big trauma, in that moment we create beliefs about ourselves and about the world around us. We make decisions about the people around us and the world around us.

What’s the decision you made in that moment about yourself, your life and the world because of that experience. What decision did you make in that moment. That’s the beginning of a story, a thought attached to a feeling attached to a persona or a voice. That created the voice that is manifesting this pain cycle.

That seems for most people to be a paradigm aha...oh the first time I felt this pain was when or maybe it was the day after I just had a fight with, or this certain event just happened and they connect the physical pain to an emotional experience.

Then what is the story that you created? What’s the persona you created to manage this disappointment or anger or fear? Or grief?

If your pain makes you feel annoyance, look back and when was the first time you felt annoyance in your life? What was happening? And that is a story that you have been carrying with you forever.

It’s how that story has become a self-fulfilling prophecy. How that persona is determined to be right and that decision colors your perspective, your world view, impacts your choices, and it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Every aspect of your reality is affected and impacted by your decision.

How you do anything is how you do everything.

Because you made that decision it impacts every aspect of your life and even predicts your future.

How Your Self-Sabotaging Beliefs Can Be Causing You Physical Pain

For example, my client Barbara came to me with low back pain and hip pain. She had had that pain for years. Even after years of massages and Bowen therapies she was still experiencing the pain. No matter what she did to relieve it, it was still present.

During one session she was especially upset about it and the pain was intense. As I asked her about her pain, she mentioned that she was in a car accident and she was very upset. As she continued on, she mentioned that the driver of the car had been drinking and that he could have really hurt someone.

“Trauma

—Jacqueline Kane

She also mentioned that her mother was an alcoholic and she was always worried that her mom would hurt someone. You see she had made the decision that alcoholics can hurt people. Being in this accident confirmed that when we drink, we hurt people. We worked on healing her anger towards her mother. As we did that, she was able to release the anger she was having towards the other driver. Her physical pain went away and has not returned. She has also had a better relationship with her mother.

“ REFLECTION: What beliefs and self-talk do you find yourself believing in regard to your pain story?”

3. Spiritual: How Your Energetic Patterns, as Well as Those of Closest to You, Keep You in Chronic Pain

As individuals, we have energetic patterns that are passed down from generations to generations—it is in our DNA. Sometimes we are not even aware of it. We just know that we have certain patterns and that we do certain things. We believe that our lives are the way it is, that we can’t change it. As the saying goes, we all have issues.

In each family, there was usually an event or trauma that happened years and decades ago and from that moment the beliefs and thoughts were embedded in the family. Those beliefs, thoughts and programming were then passed down from one generation to the next.

There is generally one person or a few who carry that energy of the family. They carry most of the anger, resentment or sadness from whatever the ancestor family member created at that time.

I have found these people to be empaths and very sensitive to energy.

They carry the shame, the sadness, and grief of the family.

How the Energy You Unconsciously Absorb from Others Affects Your Pain Levels

For example, my client Lucy had felt a lot of sadness and grief for her entire life. Along with years of pain in her low back and hip. As we worked together it was clear that she had had a hard life. Her mother was really tough on her from an early age.

Lucy then began to see how hard her moms’ life was. She was constantly hard on herself and her children. Criticizing everyone around her. This energy of sadness and grief was passed down through the generations.

We worked together to heal and clear that energy from her ancestors and from her energy system. Once we did that Lucy was able to be more herself. She was then able to decide how she wanted to live her life. Free of those feelings and beliefs. She is now able to be herself. The person she was meant to be. Lucy’s relationships have improved and basically everything in her life has improved since then. Her health has improved, she has more energy, better relationships and she now gets to create and design her life without all those negative emotions.

Freshen Up Your Social Media: 5 Fall Cleaning Strategies for Engaging Content

As the leaves change and the air turns crisp, it’s the perfect time to freshen up your social media presence with engaging, relevant content that captivates your audience. AtTind-All Creative Marketing, we believe that attention to detail and a strategic approach can revitalize your social media presence and drive meaningful engagement. Here, we will explore five fall-cleaning strategies for refreshing your socials and captivating your audience.

1. Spruce Up Your Visuals

The first step in fall cleaning your social media is to spruce up your visuals. Refresh your profile and cover photos with seasonal imagery or colors that reflect the fall spirit. Use tools like Canva or Adobe Spark to create eye-catching graphics and infographics that convey your brand message in a visually appealing way. Incorporating autumn-themed visuals can instantly grab your audience’s attention and create a warm, inviting atmosphere on your social media pages.

2. Update Your Content Calendar

Take a fresh look at your content calendar and identify opportunities to align your posts with fall-related themes, events, and holidays. Consider featuring seasonal promotions, product launches, or special offers that resonate with the fall season. Whether it’s a cozy fall-inspired recipe, a behindthe-scenes look at your team embracing the season, or tips for navigating the changing landscape, tailoring your content to the season can make your social media more relatable and engaging.

3. Dive Into User-Generated Content

Fall is a great time to tap into user-generated content (UGC) to amplify your social media strategy. Encourage your audience to share their experiences, stories, and photos related to your brand and the fall season. Curate and showcase this UGC

on your social channels, which not only fosters a sense of community but also provides authentic and relatable content that resonates with your audience. UGC not only catalyzes engagement but also strengthens brand loyalty and trust.

4.

Embrace Seasonal Storytelling

Tell compelling stories that evoke the essence of fall and connect more deeply with your audience. Whether highlighting the journey of your products from field to shelf, sharing the inspiration behind your brand’s fall collection, or featuring testimonials and success stories, leveraging seasonal storytelling can captivate your audience. Use the changing season to connect emotionally, demonstrate authenticity, and build meaningful relationships with your followers.

5. Conduct a Content Audit

As part of your fall cleaning efforts, conduct a thorough content audit to assess the performance of your social media posts over the past months. Identify high-performing content, as well as any underperforming content that may need to be revised or repurposed. Use the insights from the audit to refine your content strategy and ensure that your future posts are impactful, relevant, and tailored to your audience’s preferences. This fall, let’s embrace the opportunity to freshen up our social media with engaging content that engages and resonates with our audience. With a strategic approach to fall cleaning, we can revitalize our social media presence, foster meaningful connections, and drive impactful engagement.

At Tind-All Creative Marketing, we are passionate about helping businesses leverage the power of strategic content for social media success. Let’s embrace the season of change and transform our social media into a vibrant and engaging platform that captivates and inspires our audience.

The Magic Is Inside Us: How We Can Heal Ourselves Naturally

When“When the body gets working appropriately, it will spontaneously heal itself.”
—Dr. Ida P. Rolf
“When we pay attention to ourselves, our bodies, and what is possible, we can expect miracles.”
—Sharon Sklar, BFA, LMT, CAR

I read that this issue’s theme was “Boosting Your Immune System Naturally,” I instantly thought of a quote by Dr. Ida P. Rolf: “When the body gets working appropriately, it will spontaneously heal itself.” I have seen that happen many times in my forty-three years as a Rolfer. It’s common for me to see people lessen or get rid of chronic pain. It’s typical for people to experience looseness and freedom. It’s not unusual to see people feel better about themselves and become more productive.

There have been some unusual cases that were quite memorable. This article will focus on a few cases I remember fondly and with awe.

The Dead-End Kids

Years ago, I Rolfed an eighty-two-year-old woman; I’ll call her May. She was on meds for reflux that weren’t helping her. She saw many doctors and Specialists. She was fine all day and then had terrible pain after dinner, no matter what she ate. She changed her diet, took all kinds of digestive aids, and was at her wit’s end because the pain caused her to stay awake most of the night. She came to see me. I get a lot of what I call “The Dead-End Kids”—people who have sought out many types of treatments to no avail. We would soon see what we could do together.

Since Rolfing is a ten-session series of hands-on bodywork that directly realigns the major segments of the body, results can take time, education, and patience. We Rolfers see the body as a series of blocks that, through the accidents, injuries, and traumas of life, come out of alignment, causing strain and imbalance throughout the body. When this happens, we can suffer from all kinds of issues—headaches and chronic back, neck, and shoulder pain. Could we now add reflux to the mix?

May

May and I had the standard consultation, where she was photographed from the front, back, and two side views to see her body structure). I noticed that she had a very short waist; there wasn’t much space between her belly and chest. Her lower back was flat, her buttocks were tucked under, and she had lost the lumbar curve in her lower back. As our sessions progressed, I asked questions about her life, her days, and her activities. May only suffered from this reflux pain in the evening. After she made dinner, her main activity was to lie back in her recliner, watch TV, and relax. Aha! Her diet was not causing her issues—her body structure was! She didn’t have enough room for her food to digest; her relaxed position resulted in a shortened and compressed abdomen. She never had digestive issues during the day because she was running around shopping, cooking, and living her life. Her collapsing torso was the reason for her pain as she reclined to relax after dinner.

As her body took on more length from her Rolfing sessions, her abdomen was less compressed and had more space. She learned to sit better, using her body comfortably and easily. Soon, her issues disappeared; she went off all the medications and was free of reflux and pain. She completed the ten sessions and was thrilled with the results.

The Pianist

Another client I saw was a pianist from Argentina who was studying at The Hartt School at The University of Hartford. His back was in terrible pain; he could hardly sit at the piano. Playing was his life’s passion, but his pain was keeping him from performing. He was unable to play for more than 10 or 15 minutes without pain interrupting him. He sought out Rolfing.

He told me that from a young age, he had been taught to sit at the piano in a specific way. It appeared to me to be hyperextensive and probably causing his extreme pain. His thrust to keep his chest up, compressing his lumbar spine and shifting it too far forward, which created pain that sometimes went down his legs.

Since Rolfing is all about creating balance, order, and structure, our work together lessened the tensional force by allowing his upper body to relax and become more fluid. His lower back became more flexible, the pain subsided, and he was able to enjoy his life’s passion again.

The Magic of Rolfing®

I have had countless clients with that same holding pattern, thinking they are doing the best thing for their posture even though it causes problems and sometimes extreme pain. Bodies should feel comfortable and move with natural flexibility. Anything less than that signals that alignment and balance are off. When we pay attention to ourselves, our bodies, and what is possible, we can expect miracles.

I’ve seen teenagers become more confident and mature within a few sessions as they become more united with their bodies. As a person comes more into physical balance, the psyche can shift, and the two become more congruent. Amazing things happen when we feel grounded and have the capacity to reach upward—I’ve even had an older female client who was spontaneously relieved of her food sensitivities. I would not have believed it or thought it possible, but she achieved a new lease on life as she progressed through our sessions.

We can change many things about ourselves when we trust our inner knowing. Much of that starts with becoming more aware and looking at what could be missing or lying dormant. We have the innate ability to heal ourselves. Hopefully, we use that power to become healthier, happier, more whole, and more in touch with the world around us. Have a splendid journey!

Getting Ahead of Seasonal Depression: A Holistic Survival Kit for Finding Light in the Dark

“Incorporating a variety of treatments, such as light therapy, exercise, and a healthy diet, can significantly improve the symptoms of seasonal affective disorder [SAD].

Light therapy… can be enhanced by engaging in activities that promote overall well-being, such as meditation and spending time outdoors.”

—Norman E. Rosenthal, MD, Center for Environmental Therapeutics (First described SAD

in the 1980s, National Institute of Mental Health)

Do you get the winter blues that sometimes make you think you’re going crazy? The development of seasonal depression and its accompanying symptoms makes perfect sense and is quite common. Fortunately, seasonal depression (classified as seasonal affective disorder (SAD) in the lead reference of the American Psychiatric Association) can be addressed several different ways. If you’re feeling anxious about the approaching colder months, keep reading for holistic strategies to help you embrace the season with more joy and productivity.

Causes and Symptoms

SAD is a type of depression that usually develops in the fall and winter. Experts believe it results from reduced sunlight exposure, which can disrupt the body’s internal clock (circadian rhythm), leading to changes in mood and behavior. This reduction in sunlight can also suppress production of both serotonin, a neurotransmitter that affects mood, and melatonin, the hormone that promotes sleep. Common symptoms of SAD include persistent low mood and energy, increased anxiety, hopelessness and loss of interest in activities, oversleeping, carbohydrate cravings, concentration difficulty, and social withdrawal.

The Traditional Medical Approach

To address SAD, conventional physicians commonly prescribe antidepressants, particularly Wellbutrin and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) like Prozac, each with potential side effects that may make them an inappropriate choice. These can include nausea, insomnia, weight changes, an increased risk of suicidal thoughts, and sometimes risk of seizures. It is important to consider these risks when choosing a treatment path.

A first-line approach studied since the 1980s, psychiatrists also regularly recommend light therapy to

1. Regulate circadian rhythms.

2. Stimulate serotonin production.

3. Reduce melatonin production during the day (to manage lethargy and depression).

4. Regulate brain function and mood by stimulating specialized retinal photoreceptors.

Current recommendations involve using a 10,000lux light box for about 30 minutes each morning, which has been shown to be as effective as some antidepressant medications for SAD treatment.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is another conventional tool for SAD management. By helping patients identify and change negative thought

patterns and behaviors associated with the disorder, CBT has been shown to be as effective as light therapy. Not only does it boost mood and energy, but CBT also offers long-lasting coping strategies.

The Holistic Approach

Addressing SAD effectively involves more than managing symptoms; it requires a holistic approach that nurtures the body, mind, and spirit. By integrating tools like targeted nutrition, supplements, mindfulness practices, and lifestyle adjustments, you can create greater emotional balance. This approach can alleviate your SAD symptoms and enhance your overall well-being during the challenging winter months and beyond.

Diet Modification

A healthy diet, such as a plant-based Mediterranean diet that is rich in omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) and antioxidants, can alleviate SAD symptoms by supporting brain health. Studies have also shown that reducing simple carbohydrates and replacing them with complex carbohydrates like vegetables, legumes, and gluten-free whole grains, can help stabilize blood sugar and improve mood.

Some helpful dietary supplements include:

• 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan): This compound, derived from the amino acid L-tryptophan, helps increase serotonin levels in the brain, potentially improving mood and reducing anxiety.

• Ashwagandha: This adaptogenic Ayurvedic herb is well-known for promoting mental clarity, calming the nervous system, lowering cortisol levels, improving mood, and generally helping the body manage stress.

•Bacopa monnieri: Another adaptogenic Ayurvedic herb, bacopa combats SAD by:

1.Balancing the neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine, and GABA, all associated with mood regulation.

2.Providing antioxidants that protect the brain from stress and inflammation.

3. Enhancing cognitive function (memory, attention, and learning) to help counteract the “brain fog” and concentration difficulties common in SAD patients.

• CBD (Cannabidiol): Although not for everyone, especially due to potential prescription drug interactions, CBD has been gaining researchers’ attention as a potential supplement for managing a variety of SAD symptoms, including anxiety, poor sleep, and mood destabilization. While research is still in its early stages, CBD is known to work by interacting with the brain’s endocannabinoid and serotonin systems.

“Some vitamins regulate biochemical pathways in the brain, assisting proper cognitive functioning…. Nutritional imbalances are among the influencing factors of depression. Correcting these could reduce symptoms and improve moods in people with SAD.”

—“Seasonal Affective Disorder: What Vitamins Should You Take?” HealthMatch.com, Medically reviewed by Dr. Dina Elsalamony, MD, MScPH

• Probiotics: Broad spectrum probiotics may play a role in managing SAD by promoting a healthy gut microbiome, which is closely linked to mental health through the gut-brain axis.

• Saffron: In recent years, over twenty clinical trials and multiple meta-analyses have evaluated the efficacy of saffron in treating depression. These studies generally show promising results, with saffron often being compared to standard antidepressants like fluoxetine (Prozac) and imipramine (Tofranil).

• SAM-e (S-adenosylmethionine):

This natural compound, formed in the body from the amino acid L-methionine and ATP (cellular energy), has been shown to combat depression and support brain function. A daily dose of 400–800 mg can prove effective for moderate depression, while a dose of 1200–1600 mg is generally recommended for more severe cases. SAM-e should be taken in divided doses that start low and increase as needed.

• Vitamin D: This pseudo-hormone is crucial during winter, when sunlight exposure is limited. Studies indicate that vitamin D supplementation, especially 5,000 iu per day, can reduce depression. Other supplements worth exploring include melatonin and the herbs rhodiola, schisandra, and St. John’s wort.

High Quality Essential Oils

Many uplifting essential oils, including lavender and bergamot, when used aromatically or applied topically in a carrier oil, can help reduce stress and anxiety. You might also explore highly effective blends from doTERRA such as Cheer, Motivate, and Elevation.

Sleep Management

A regular sleep routine is crucial for managing SAD. This includes going to bed and waking up at the same time each day and creating a calming bedtime environment. Using a dawn simulator or light therapy box in the morning can help regulate sleep patterns. Supplements that promote restful sleep include AnxioCalm, isotonic magnesium glycinate, L-glycine, and ashwagandha.

Consciousness Management and Gratitude

Managing your consciousness through such programs as The Avatar Course, and practicing gratitude, can help train your brain to shift your focus from negative to positive experiences. Doing this will in turn help you create the life you desire. Try keeping a gratitude journal that will give you a structured way to reflect regularly and purposefully, in the morning and before bedtime, on those things for which you are most thankful.

Stress Management

Incorporating stress-reducing activities like yoga, humming, and deep belly breathing, can help alleviate SAD physical and emotional symptoms. The dietary changes and nutrients above can also support the body’s stress response.

Talk to a Holistic Health Professional

Holistic approaches to SAD can provide critical support and improve overall well-being. With the therapies discussed above, you can create a comprehensive survival kit to find light in the darkest months. Before starting a new dietary or supplements regimen, or making other lifestyle changes, it is best to consult with a holistic healthcare professional who can tailor a treatment plan to your needs.

Bioelectric Lymphatic Drainage: Noninvasive Treatment for Better Health

Based on the principles of quantum physics, bioelectric lymphatic drainage is a safe, drugfree method of improving the flow of fluids in the body by rapidly dissipating lymph congestion. Bioelectric lymphatic drainage, or BELD, uses a light beam generator that emits a stream of photons (negative ions) known for their antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. The light beam creates a heartbeat pulsation improving the flow of lymph fluid and breaking up blocked debris, toxins, bacteria, viruses and sick cells by ushering them out via lymphatic channels.

Bioelectric lymphatic drainage, the most recent advancement in lymphatic drainage technology, emits energetic information to the cells via harmonic sounds, frequencies of light, and noble gas ionization. This assists in the removal of toxins, poisons, trapped proteins, and other waste products by slowly and safely moving them out through normal channels. It is a gentle, noninvasive procedure combined with gentle manual lymph drainage.

Research shows there is a strong relationship between the sluggish flow of lymph and chronic illness. Disruption of the normal flow of fluids in the body occurs when you are dehydrated, stationary, affected by oxidants, and have shallow breathing. The lymph primarily relies on muscle contractions from the back of the legs and breathing to move it. It can become congested when there are excess proteins, toxins, chemicals, and cellular debris. This results in interference of oxygen being

delivered to various parts of the body creating an environment where pathogens can occur. The beam increases the negative charges in the tissue stimulating life energy, as well as increasing the action of specialized enzymes that in turn helps clear fibrosis in the body, breasts, and uterus. It can break up fibrin in scar tissue and improve immune function to fight off cancer cells, viruses, bacteria, and yeast.

Some of the conditions that bioelectric lymphatic drainage may help to improve include swelling and inflammation, carpal tunnel syndrome, back problems, headaches, muscle aches and pains, fibromyalgia, swollen lymph nodes, fibrocystic breasts, asthma and breathing difficulties, cellulite reduction, and fluid retention.

The Colonic Institute offers hour-long lymphatic drainage sessions and half-hour sessions to add on to your colon therapy experience. Adding a lymphatic drainage session prior to a colon therapy session can be extraordinarily helpful for having a more productive colonic.

Clients can expect to feel fully relaxed after a lymphatic drainage session, as the pulsing rhythm of the wand helps the body shift from a state of sympathetic (fight or flight) to parasympathetic (rest and digest). They can also expect improved bowel movements the following day, a more restful sleep, and decreased swelling. Overall, the bioelectric lymphatic drainage session is an efficient yet relaxing detox experience.

5 Noninvasive Ways to Boost Your Immunity

“This brief exposure to cold [in whole-body cryotherapy] may enhance the immune response by increasing white blood cell count and antioxidant levels, preparing the body to fight infections more effectively. It’s a modern take on the age-old practice of using natural elements to stimulate the body’s own healing capabilities.”

Life inevitably brings challenges, and by equipping ourselves to navigate these bumps in the road, we significantly improve our prospects for health and vitality. At Imagine Float, we wholeheartedly believe in the foundational role a strong immune system plays in our overall wellness. It’s with this understanding that we’ve curated a selection of non-invasive therapies, each harnessing the earth’s natural elements to catalyze the body’s innate response systems. Our aim is not merely to offer temporary relief but to provide ongoing support to enhance and maintain your immune system. By integrating these natural therapies into your routine, we help ensure that you remain resilient through all of life’s seasons. Here’s how some of our therapies can help fortify your immune system, ensuring you stay resilient and healthy.

1. Ballancer® Pro: The Lymphatic Optimizer

Our Ballancer Pro system is a cornerstone for immune health, targeting the lymphatic system, which plays a pivotal role in immune function. The lymphatic system acts as your body’s internal “clean-up crew,” managing waste and toxins. When your lymphatic system is overwhelmed, your risk of illness increases. The Ballancer Pro aids this system, enhancing the flow and efficiency of lymph transport. Regular sessions can prevent lymph congestion, reduce chronic inflammation, and

ultimately support robust immune health. Massaging the abdominal area also promotes gut health, which is crucial since about 70% of the immune system resides in the gut.

2. Float Therapy: Stress Relief and Immune Function

Floatation therapy offers profound relaxation, reducing the levels of stress hormones that can weaken the immune system. The serene environment of the float cabin helps lower cortisol and adrenaline levels, facilitating a shift from stress to tranquility. This reduction in stress hormones bolsters your immune system’s ability to defend against pathogens. Additionally, the high magnesium content in the float cabins plays a critical role in numerous biochemical reactions in the body, including those that strengthen the immune system.

3. Whole-Body Cryotherapy: Harnessing the Power of Cold

Whole-body cryotherapy utilizes extreme cold to trigger hormesis, a biological phenomenon where a mild stressor boosts overall health and resilience. This brief exposure to cold may enhance the immune response by increasing white blood cell count and antioxidant levels, preparing the body to fight infections more effectively. It’s a modern take on the age-old practice of using natural elements to stimulate the body’s own healing capabilities.

4. Infrared Sauna: Heat as a Healer

Our infrared sauna mimics the beneficial effects of a fever, intentionally raising your core body temperature to activate and strengthen the immune system. This process helps in fighting infections by hindering virus replication and reducing inflammation. The sauna’s gentle heat also produces heat shock proteins, which are crucial for immune function and cellular repair, supporting an overall increase in immunity.

5. Heart Rate Variability: Understanding Your Body’s Signals

Heart Rate Variability (HRV) testing provides crucial insights into your overall well-being, including the health of your immune system. By analyzing HRV data, we can identify stress patterns that may be silently compromising your immune health. This understanding allows for targeted lifestyle adjustments to bolster your immune resilience and promote longevity.

So, What Are You Waiting For?

At Imagine Float, we are dedicated to providing innovative, non-invasive therapies that holistically support your health. Whether it’s through enhancing lymphatic health, reducing stress, stimulating immune response with cold, harnessing heat for healing, or understanding your body better through HRV testing, our goal is to ensure you have access to all the tools necessary to maintain a strong, responsive immune system. The Art of Self-Care

“Creative outlets can also be a powerful form of self-care. Engaging in activities like painting, writing, dancing, or playing music allows us to express ourselves authentically and tap into our inner joy. When we allow our creativity to flow, we unlock a sense of freedom and fulfillment that nourish our souls.”

Daddona, MA

Imagine waking up each day feeling refreshed, energized, and deeply connected to your inner self, navigating life’s challenges with grace, resilience, and unwavering inner strength. Amidst the chaos of daily life, it’s easy to forget the importance of nurturing our inner selves. Through prioritizing self-care, you can unlock your full potential and experience a life overflowing with joy, purpose, and inner peace.

What Does Self-Care Look Like?

Prioritizing self-care is not a luxury but an essential ingredient for maintaining inner balance and well-being. Self-care is not a one-size-fits-all solution—it is a personalized journey of discovering what nourishes our souls.

For some, self-care may involve practicing relaxation techniques like deep breathing exercises, mindfulness meditation, or yoga. These practices calm the mind, release tension, and connect us to our inner peace. Others may find solace in healthy habits like eating nourishing foods, getting regular exercise, and ensuring adequate sleep. These pillars of well-being fuel our bodies and minds, enabling us to function at our best.

Creative outlets can also be a powerful form of self-care. Engaging in activities like painting, writing, dancing, or playing music allows us to express ourselves authentically and tap into our inner joy. When we allow our creativity to flow, we unlock a sense of freedom and fulfillment that nourish our souls.

Setting boundaries is another crucial aspect of selfcare. It’s about learning to say “no” to demands that drain our energy or compromise our well-being. By establishing healthy boundaries, we protect our time, energy, and emotional resources, ensuring that we have enough left over to care for ourselves.

I Am Here: The Inner Alchemy of Awareness

“The goal of mindfulness is to see the patterns for what they are and then choose whether to continue replaying them. This is the Inner Alchemy of Awareness. We choose; we are not powerless.”
—Erin and Marcel Touponse

Where am I?”

When you ask yourself this question, what is your initial answer? Some may respond with, “I am at work” or “I am in Wethersfield.” Others may say, “I am outside,” “I am inside,” or simply, “I am on Earth.”

“Where am I?” This seems like a simple, straightforward question. However, when you peel back the layers, you may find something more profound beneath the surface.

I Am Here

In Qi Gong practice, we learn to answer the question, “ Where am I?” with the simple phrase “ I am here.”

“How do I know I am here?”

“I can feel the rise and fall of my breath, I can feel the floor beneath my feet, I can feel the clothes on my skin.”

Through awareness of being, we tap into the vast network of energy that runs through our body, heart, and mind. The mantra, “I am here,” brings our awareness to the present moment. It helps us to shine a light on what our thoughts and emotions are manifesting.

Our Thoughts and Emotions Govern the Quality of Our Energy

The heart and mind are interlinked in a beautiful dance and each movement paints light and shadow across the ever-changing surface of our experience. When we have positive thoughts, our energy is light and airy. Negative thoughts yield heavy feelings.

Untended patterns of thought and emotion will replay the same results over and over again, leaving us feeling marginalized. We call it “Fate” and surrender to the power of it; we surrender our power to it.

Many of these patterns are acquired from our family and early life experiences. The goal of mindfulness is to see the patterns for what they are and then choose whether to continue replaying them. This is the Inner Alchemy of Awareness. We choose; we are not powerless.

The mental/emotional dance is the key to understanding these patterns. The mental feeds the emotional; the emotional is nourished by the mental. If our thought patterns are based on self-invalidation, unworthiness, and fear, we will inevitably encourage those emotions to join us on the dance floor.

It is said that we are born with two books. The first is the Silver Book. This one holds the story of our life. We can edit this book, but we cannot change it. Some people spend their entire lives arguing with this book.

The second book is the Gold Book. This one is empty. Within the confines of this binding, we hold our truest potential. Who we are and why we came here can be imagined on these pages. Here, we explore the stars, the cosmos, the depths of all that ever was or will be. We become the authors of our life. We are the Heroes and the Myth.

How Do I Know I Am Here? The Alchemy of Awareness

When suffering runs deep, the only thing that can be done is to bring awareness to it. Alchemize pain into peace by holding space for it without fear or disgust. Comfort the wounded places as a mother with her crying child would. Remember that the power to alter reality lies within our reach. “ I am here” is a reminder that in this moment, there is nothing that cannot be changed through awareness.

Just as the heart and mind dance in patterns of powerful manifestation, so shall we dance with the inevitable flow of transformation and change. We all have the power to choose which songs we wish to sing. By shifting our attention from Silver to Gold, from powerlessness to mindfulness, we allow ourselves to write our own story in the book of our soul. Alchemize your experience by starting with the question... “Where Am I?” and you will find your truth waiting for YOU in this moment.

“Chronic

UVA exposure can result in thickening of the skin’s top visual layers of living tissue (the epidermis) as well as destroying the skin’s elastic fibers.”

The Sun: Your Skin’s Most Beautiful Adversary?

Ahyes, here comes the sun. So warm, so beautiful, so life giving. How can such a beautiful, blazing star cause so much damage?

Let’s look at the facts. As most of us now know, the sun can actually be good for you. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), getting anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes of sunlight on your arms, hands, and face two to three times per week is enough to reap the benefits of the sun. However, anything more can cause unwanted issues.

Now take a good look at this photo that accompanies this article. It is representative of a condition known as unilateral dermatoheliosis, also known as photoaging, which is exemplified in the case of an unidentified 69-year-old trucker who has been on the road for 28 years, accumulating a great deal of exposure to ultraviolet (UVA) radiation. UVA rays transmitted through clouds and window glass to penetrate the skin’s layers has been tied to aging and wrinkles. According to the New England Journal of Medicine, chronic UVA exposure can result in thickening of the skin’s top visual layers of living tissue (the epidermis) as well as destroying the skin’s elastic fibers.

The truck driver took the brunt of the damage on the left side of his face because of his many hours behind the wheel. You may not be behind the wheel as much as a trucker, but you’re probably behind the wheel frequently enough—perhaps more than you realize—that too much sun can cause some degree of skin damage, regardless of whether it is spring, summer, fall, or winter.

Protect Your Skin From Sun-Related Conditions

Immortal Opulence has a solution that addresses sun-damaged skin and other factors of aging such as dry, wrinkled, sagging skin. There are many rare, wild ingredients in our formulation that penetrate deep into and regenerate your skin at the cellular level— without chemicals or synthetics.

Immortal Opulence contains essential oils such as red raspberry seed oil and carrot seed oil. Our carefully researched, family-farm-grown oils will effectively moisturize, improve skin elasticity, improve smoothness, reduce wrinkles and skin lines, and give you that elusive healthy glow. These oils penetrate deep into the skin to reduce wrinkles, repair damage, hydrate dry skin, lighten age spots, and reduce the “leathery” appearance of your neck, chest, and hands from too many unnecessary hours in the sun. These ingredients create a high-performance skin reparative cream—chemicals won’t do the job and, in fact, can even make skin matters worse.

If you use a pure, clean, chemical-free sunblock of SPF 15 or higher, combined with Immortal Opulence skin cream, you will have established a solid defense from skin destruction and accelerated skin aging.

Richard Fanelli is an obsessive holistic researcher and the founder and formulator of Immortal Opulence Skin Cream. He currently resides in Old Wethersfield. Immortal Opulence is offering a special right now, with a FREE 2 oz. bottle of Immortal-C face serum, normally priced at $70.00.

5 Tips for Navigating a Motherless Motherhood

As I kissed your cheek, I whispered for only you to hear, “I will love you for forever.” You exhaled as I inhaled my first breaths without you. You had been my not-so-silent partner my entire life, and I had never done anything without you. From that moment, I have been forced to carry on, to be open to new opportunities, and to make good decisions without my compass. When I think about it too much, it feels overwhelming and impossible, and yet here I am.

My mom died in the wee hours of the morning on Friday, September 18, 2015, of metastatic breast cancer. She was and remains the strongest, boldest, and bravest person I know.

As a perinatal therapist, I am faced with motherhood every day. I support my clients as they step through the threshold from one to two. I offer a listening ear, a shoulder to cry on, words of wisdom, and validation, and remind them of their resilience as they share their woes, fears, and stress. They face countless thoughts and feelings while walking on a road traveled by many generations along the way. They are afraid to share some of those thoughts and feelings aloud; some have discussed them with a loved one or a partner, and many have told their mothers first before telling me.

Our moms are one of the pillars of our lives; she is the person we lean on the most when scared, hurt, or in need of information and clarity. If we’re lucky, they are the ones who know just what to do and say, just when we need it, and most of the time without us having to ask. Mothers learn on the go; they are the embodiment of what it means to sacrifice, and they lay the foundation of love, strength, and nurturing for their respective families.

Yet here I am, a member of the motherless—a truth that used to terrify me because I knew once you become a mother after your own mother dies, you’re mourning what might have been. Many

women turn to their own mothers to glean insight, sometimes feeling a deepening of connection or, at the very least, a more well-rounded understanding of their maternal lineage. Being motherless amid the experience of pregnancy and new motherhood carries so many unanswered questions, grief, sadness, and limitations. Sometimes when alone, I have phantom conversations with my mother. We discuss the trivial to remarkable goings on. She says something that annoys me, I make her laugh, but never is she giving motherly advice. This reality is bittersweet.

For some women, they uncover a new appreciation for the complexities of what their own mothers endured; they may begin to feel a stronger bond with them even in their absence. Others may experience a sense of isolation, moments of envy, resentment, or anger. Adjusting to motherhood without a mother as a touchstone can make for a complex and emotional period, and these feelings are normal and understandable. Even during these moments, we often must show up for ourselves and our children anyway, so here are a few tips that may help you with this motherless motherhood thing:

1. Allow yourself to feel all the feels.

2. Take time when you need it.

3. Celebrate her in any way you can, and talk about her every chance you get.

4. Locate a mommy tribe—friends or loved ones who will help when needed (especially to help with #3).

5. Talk to a therapist to help process these feelings.

I will always wish my mother was still here. In her absence, I have learned that this feeling is okay because she was and remains the strongest, boldest, and bravest person I know. And I will love her for forever.

“Our moms are one of the pillars of our lives; she is the person we lean on the most when scared, hurt, or in need of information and clarity.”

SAD? It’s a Gut Feeling!

“Make

movement a part of every day— even if you don’t feel like it. Physical exercise releases endorphins, brain chemicals that can improve well-being. Take that movement outdoors for the added benefit of sun exposure. Short lunchtime walks around the block and a longer weekend hike can lift your spirits.”

—Dr. Dana Lapointe, ND

It’s that time of year again when the days have gotten shorter, and darkness begins to encroach on our workdays. It is difficult for just about everyone to get up before sunrise and continue to work after dark, but for about ten percent of New Englanders, the “down” feelings accelerate to what has become known as seasonal affective disorder, or SAD.

For a true diagnosis of SAD, the depressive episodes must occur over two or more consecutive years and coincide with the seasons of less daylight—in Connecticut, our fall and winter months.

The symptoms of SAD can include disruptions to normal sleep patterns, either sleeping too much or too little, and experiencing exasperation when exhaustion and alertness come at the “wrong” times. Fatigue can make it hard to concentrate. Reduced appetite or cravings for carbs can bring unplanned weight loss or gain. Lethargy contributes to losing interest in daily activities and a withdrawal from social events. In the worst cases, some suffer feelings of hopelessness, anxiety, aggression, or thoughts of self-harm.

So, What Can We Do?

To combat the winter blues, practice positive self-care. Be kind to yourself. Incorporate short wellness activities into your routines, like taking ten deep breaths before each meal or grounding yourself outdoors at sunrise. Make movement a part of every day—even if you don’t feel like it. Physical exercise releases endorphins, brain chemicals that can improve well-being. Take that movement outdoors for the

added benefit of sun exposure. Short lunchtime walks around the block and a longer weekend hike can lift your spirits.

If cravings are a problem, put a healthy choice between your craving and your behavior. For example, have an apple before you allow yourself to have that cookie. You just might not want that cookie afterward.

Engage in social activities that won’t feel overwhelming, like joining a book club or attending a local “meetup” with positive-focused folks with a common interest. Serving others can shift your perspective. Is there a neighbor who could use a hand?

Make a list of several little things that you enjoy and commit to doing one of them each day: a cup of tea, a favorite comedy, a bubble bath…

The Brain’s Relationship to Gut Health

While we used to believe mental syndromes were separate from physical ones, we now have the advantage of understanding the powerful connection between the brain and the gut. We’ve all experienced our “nerves” giving us “butterflies” or “digestive issues.” But gut dysbiosis can also send the wrong signals up to the brain. The gutbrain axis works like a two-way street.

Gut Support to Combat SADness

Using the right gut supplementation, you can reduce negative mood states while increasing positive ones, sometimes surprisingly quickly. You can also make food choices that will help you improve your mental outlook, one meal at a time.

Some Foods That Support Mood

Salmon, Bluefish, Other Fatty Fish

Japanese AsparagusTart Cherries

Spinach and Eggs Green Tea

Dark ChocolatePumpkin Seeds

Some Supplements That Support Mood

High-Potency Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Grapeseed and Pine Bark Extracts

Rafuma and Magnolia (herbs)

Vitamins D3 and K2 Theanine

Melatonin PrecursorsPrebiotic Fibers

Saffron St. John’s Wort

Some Probiotics That Support Mood

Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Strain R0011

Lactobacillus helveticus, Strain R0052

Bifidobacterium longum, Strain R0175

Choose “Happier” Probiotics

Not all probiotics are the same. Studies have shown that specific probiotics have a much greater ability to affect mood than others, so consult a gut-health specialist, or look for a probiotic combination that has been specifically formulated to support the production of neurotransmitters in the gut. The strains in your probiotics matter! Refer to the above chart for the best foods, supplements, and probiotic strains for seasonal sadness. It’s natural to think of reaching out to a mental health practitioner when seasonal mood issues or when feelings of anxiousness or depression begin to take over your life, but that may only get you half of the support you need. A holistic gut health specialist might be a wise first step to help you rebalance your neurotransmitters, laying a foundation for feeling more joyful, especially during our dark New England fall and winter seasons.
