e are all made up of energy and vibration and everything we do from our work, physical exercise, personal and professional relationships, social events requires energy. But we often fail to realize the critical role of energy in our lives. Without the right quality, focus and forces of energy, we will become compromised in any activity we undertake. It is sad to see the immense amount of human and corporate potential wasted due to the misuse of energy. Unhealthy eating habits, lack of exercise, negativity, sarcasm, unfocused goals and strategies are all contributing factors to energy loss. The happiest and most productive people have the unique ability to both engage fully with maximum energy in regards to their goals and tasks and then disengage fully from time to time. This period of disengagement allows for reflection and renewal of energy stores. They understand that they are free to cut loose those things in their life - relationships, situations, activities, habits and obligations - that drain their energy. As these high-maintenance, unwanted elements are eliminated, they free up their most valuable talents and find themselves surrounded by an environment that supports and boosts their energy. This reclaimed energy makes it possible for you to grow your career or business tremendously, dramatically improve the quality of your life, and create a lifestyle that supports personal and professional success and happiness. Every time you increase the energy you have to devote to more rewarding uses, you also increase the value of your life to you and the people around you. However, many of us are in situations that are overwhelmingly negative and we are not in a position to get out of them right now. How do you walk away from a parent that always sees the glass as half empty or treats you like a child? How do you leave a negative relationship that you’ve already invested years in? What if you love your job but are surrounded by negative coworkers? These are valid questions and situations that we sometimes find ourselves in and wonder how we can manage our energy. Here are my tried and true tips: 1. Have a regular spiritual or meditation practice where you can quiet the mind, get away from the world and focus on what’s positive in your life. 2. Spend as little time as possible with the negative people in your life. Only do what is absolutely necessary as far as communicating and interacting with them. 3. Keep a list of positive affirmations with you at all times. After an interaction with a negative individual, pull out your list and remind yourself what you love about you to help remove any negativity you may have absorbed. 4. Consider if you can get out of the negative situation like a job or relationship. Write out the pros and cons and discuss with a friend or professional. We all have far more control over our energy than we realize. We can choose every moment of every day how we will respond to certain situations and whether that response will be positive or negative. The ultimate measure of our lives is not how long we live, but rather how we are able to manage our energy in the time we are each given. In Health and Happiness,

r. Stephanie Preston began working at the Center for Natural Medicine in July of 2017. In addition to colon hydrotherapy, she is now accepting new patients for Naturopathic care, physical medicine, and acupuncture. Dr. Preston graduated in May of 2018 from the University of Bridgeport, College of Naturopathic Medicine. Here at Healing Duo, we do not believe in a one-size-fits-all healthcare approach. Both practitioners focus heavily on functional medicine using labs that go beyond the traditional paradigm to further assess the chemical makeup of your body. The doctors provide individualized treatment plans that better target the cause of your symptoms and prevent future diseases from occurring. Dr. Nelson specializes in natural pain management. He uses low-force physical medicine (spinal manipulation, spinal decompression, electrical stimulation) and Chinese medicine (acupuncture, cupping, massage therapy) to get his patients out of pain. Dr. Nelson also focuses on chronic disease care, reversing and preventing diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and autoimmune diseases. Dr. Pamela Santapaola specializes in pediatric care, women’s health, and gastrointestinal disorders. Her treatments focus heavily on nutrition, lifestyle modifications, physician grade nutritional supplementation, and acupuncture. Nutmeg “Nuggets” Experience CBD Massage and Yoga at TriCity Massage & Wellness in Vernon
A
t TriCity Massage and Wellness, in Vernon, we offer CBD enhanced massage and CBD yoga classes! If you read last month’s issue, you saw articles on CBD (cannabidiol) and chronic pain. As mentioned in the article, we have CB2 nerve receptors which directly respond to cannabidiol, many of which are in our skin. The skin is our largest organ and soaks up what we place on it like a sponge. When we use CBD topically it goes right to the CB2 receptors, attaching to and activating them. This reaction eases the sensation of pain, reduces inflammation, and can help reduce tingling or numbness. During a CBD massage we will use a massage oil or lotion that has been infused with cannabidiol isolate (there is no THC in our products) for your entire service, whether you are looking for specific work or a full body experience. Clients have noted a deeper sense of relaxation, disappearance of pain, reduction of neuropathy and arthritis symptoms, and reduction in migraines after their CBD massage. You can add CBD to just about every massage service at TriCity Massage and Wellness for $10. What does CBD yoga mean? Prior to class, each participant is given a sample trio of CBD products to apply to their skin. The samples are in re-sealable containers and you can reapply as needed throughout the class or take them home. Our massage therapists will provide mini CBD massages during an extended savasana. CBD yoga is $20 and the next event will be held on April 27th. We also offer a variety of CBD products for you to take home including oils, roll-ons, and even CBD bath bombs. Submitted by Cassidy Hwalek, licensed massage therapist and owner of Tricity Massage and Wellness. TriCity offers a variety of massage services, healing sessions, yoga, and wellness events. For more information visit www.tri-citymassage.com or call 860.512.0433. TriCity Massage and Wellness, 220 Hartford Turnpike (in the DW Fish Building), Vernon.

Oral Sex Is Not Safe Sex, At Any Age
ex is a powerful motivator of human activity. The term "safe sex", used as a code word for oral sex, became popularized during the 1980's in an effort to stem the fears of the spread of sexually transmitted diseases between adult partners. But during the ensuing time period this form of interpersonal activity has surged and expanded into the younger members of the population extending to teens and even pre-teens. Human papilloma virus, or HPV, is a family of DNA viruses that IS highly communicable and has been indicted and found guilty of causing a variety of wart-appearing oropharyngeal (mouth and throat) cancers, many of which are potentially fatal, or at minimum disfiguring. Significantly, most affected individuals may not even know they have been infected, and the associated cancers are virtually asymptomatic. The detection of HPV in the oral cavity uses a relatively inexpensive non-invasive salivary DNA test. However, there are no available high tech tests available for detecting the HPV caused oropharyngeal cancers. In 2018, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) reported that about 70% of oropharyngeal cancers are caused by oral HPV infection. At this time there are effective vaccines (Gardasil (R), Gardasil 9 (R), and Cervarix(R)) to prevent cervical and oral infection by a group of HPV strains, but as of this writing, there have been no studies to show that the vaccine also prevents the associated oropharyngeal cancers. Additionally, there have been no long-term studies to rule out adverse long term effects, especially immune system or chronic disease effects. Human papilloma virus is a very dangerous virus. Even though it has FDA approval, the ramification of taking the anti-HPV vaccine has its own risks; immediate untoward individual immune reactions, but also long term and as yet unknown side effects. Therefore, the best and only sure fire way to prevent and avoid the disastrous problems associated with HPV infection is to avoid getting the virus in the first place. Yes, unfortunately, abstinence. Kevin H. Norige, DMD is the founder and chief dentist at South Windsor Smiles, a private dental practice that focuses on oral health as part of the whole body system. For 35 years he has worked with patients to achieve a healthy mouth and live a healthier life. 860.640.4464. www.SouthWindsorSmiles.com. See ad on page 2 and 24.

Nutmeg “Nuggets” Try Essential Oils for Immune Support and Stress Reduction
O
ver 30 years ago, Gary Young the pioneer of essential oils started off on a mission. Detox Your Home with Green Ohana
W
e’re sure you are careful to read the labels on the food you buy, but do you always read the labels on the products that you use to bathe and brush your teeth with, the skincare products that you might use, the household products that you clean with and wash and dry your clothes with? What about all those plastic bags you pack for snacks and lunches, where do they end up? How toxic could your household be? Green Ohana the home of Basic Bars Soaps LLC, is your local eco-friendly boutique that addresses many of these issues with the products that they sell. Green Ohana prides itself on helping people detox their homes. They carry many varieties of eco-friendly, vegan, cruelty free, non-toxic and organic products, most produced right here in Connecticut! They also carry essential oil products such as candles, room sprays, concentrates and upcycled lava stone diffuser bracelets. Nutmeg “Nuggets” Protect Your Pet from Autoimmune Disease

Certain breeds are known to have a higher risk • Professional Nail Trims Supporting Treatments for: for some specifi c autoimmune diseases, like poodles. A recent study Pain, Cancer, Heart Disease, Long Term Wellness showed a link between neutering and an increased risk of autoimCenter Shops, 3 Turkey Hills Road mune disease. Vaccination in mature animals has been shown to be East Granby, CT 06026 • 860.888.7796 www.AllCreaturesHolisticHealth.com associated with the onset of autoimmune hemolytic anemia, though this does not negate the benefits that vaccination also provides. Fortunately, more and more breeds have health screening or genetic tests that can be used by responsible breeders to decrease the risk of offspring that will develop autoimmune disease. Obviously, neutering and vaccination have many behavioral and health benefits to offer to animals, but making choices about what approach will be ideal for an animal would ideally take into account breed risk. Treatment for autoimmune disease is typically limited to immune suppressants, though some diseases may respond to nutraceutical approaches employed by many veterinarians. Where these approaches fail or have undesirable side effects, herbs and acupuncture can be powerful tools. While it is rare to totally resolve autoimmune disease, it may be managed well with long term herbs and/or acupuncture. Improving the diet to a less processed, possibly hypoallergenic diet to help decrease overall inflammation is helpful for some cases. Results can be dramatic, like the dog whose brain inflammation hampered normal personality and function and who didn’t respond noticeably to immunosuppressants, and yet returned to normal function using herbs alone. Other results can be less dramatic but no less welcomed, like a patient with autoimmune skin disease and marked hair loss who regained a partial haircoat and increased comfort with herbal support. Flavor Spotlight: Wild Moon Liqueurs Lavender
W
ild Moon Liqueurs, hand crafted locally by Hartford Flavor Company, are gluten free, uniquely flavored, all-natural, botanically infused liqueurs designed for the professional mixologist and home enthusiast alike. The Wild Moon line of flavors include: Cucumber, Rose, Lime, Cranberry, Lavender, Birch, and Chai Spice. Wild Moon Liqueurs are reinventing the liqueur category with real flavors and innovation.
The Lavender Spritzer • 1.5 oz Wild Moon Liqueurs Lavender •
2 lemon wedges
•
2 mint leaves muddled
•
4 oz club soda
In a Collins glass, muddle mint leaves and squeeze in lemon wedges. Add in Wild Moon Lavender. Add ice. Top with Club Soda and mix. Garnish with more mint or lavender flowers.
While most raw materials are sourced locally, such as cucumbers from Glastonbury, CT, Hartford Flavor Company goes one step further by growing their own Lavender for their infusions. With a background in landscape design and botany, founder Lelaneia Dubay personally tends a patch of Lavender in Hartford’s West End, where stems, flowers and seeds are harvested for infusion throughout the summer and early fall. “It feels great to know exactly where our Lavender is coming from. I can ensure our Lavender is 100% organic, uncompromised by the harsh chemicals commonly used in the agriculture industry,” Dubay said. “I love splashing Lavender in my chamomile tea at the end of the day for a relaxing evening,” Dubay continued. Wild Moon Lavender was awarded 93 points from Tasting Panel Magazine and is the only Lavender liqueur on the market. All of the Wild Moon Liqueurs flavors are found at most retailers around the state and are easy to use in simple mixed drinks, sophisticated cocktails, or as flavor boosts in baking and cooking. Submitted by Sage Callahan. Hartford Flavor Company is open on weekends for distillery tours and Wild Moon samples Fridays 4-7pm, Saturdays 1-6pm, Sundays 2-5pm. The tasting room can also be hired out for private tours and parties for a fun and unique venue. www.hartfordflavor.com @hartfordflavor @wildmoonliqueurs. See ad on page 13.

I
n the lower level of a Hartford landmark skyscraper, we are right in the center of life, literally. With urban diversity, people from all walks of life from residents, travelers, executives, theater caste, athletes, college students, all come into the studio and life is reduced to very simple human terms - we see the sigh, the laughter, the familiar face. For an hour or perhaps 90 minutes, members have a mental and physical release that allows a recharge in a profound way. It can happen at 6 am, lunch time, evening after work, and weekends. In the hustle of a working city, this brings perspective to a central theme in holistic living that de-bunks the concept of work-life balance to just become life balance. Professionals in business are re-writing the outdated concept of compartmentalizing areas of one’s life to one that integrates essentials with flexible boundaries: nutrition, exercise, self-care, relationships, and meaningful work that inspires you. While the exercise connection is obvious, we also see this changing concept at Hartford Sweat. Integrating these essentials into the studio means availability and creativity that has led to Yoga and Barre at local Hartford venues and area partners and a sampler-Sunday in the studio to showcase healthy foods right from downtown Hartford. Community classes, charity, corporate partnerships, and more, are all built around community relationships. So, in an unexpected place at the heart of a busy city we find a common truth that a balanced life will inspire your best work. Rakyel and Tory Brogan own and operate Hartford Sweat at 777 Main in Downtown Hartford. You will find Rakyel in the studio teaching Hott Xpress and Bikram classes throughout the week as she brings the same transformational experience to others that she found years ago. Is Health Coaching Right for You?
A
re you overwhelmed with the changes that you need to make to feel your best and live the life that you desire? Are you frustrated by conflicting health information in books and online? Do you know what to do but keep falling off track? Do you feel ready to do the work to achieve your health goals but desire personalized support? If you answered yes to any of these questions then a health coach is “just what the doctor ordered.” The field of health coaching is rapidly growing yet most still don’t understand what we do and how we can help. Health coaches partner with clients seeking to make sustainable changes to enhance their overall health and well-being. Just like a sports coach can help you perfect your tennis swing or your 3-point jump shot, health coaches provide insight, inspiration, education, support and accountability throughout the coaching process. Health promoting lifestyle changes that we address include: improving diet, managing stress, maximizing sleep, increasing movement and removing toxins. Health coaching can be especially valuable for cancer patients and survivors before, during and after treatment. Rates of chronic illness continue to grow despite medical advances. In fact, one in two Americans has a chronic disease. According to current research the major risks result from environmental factors and poor lifestyle choices. These are known as epigenetic factors and have the power to change how genes are expressed. This is exciting and empowering news because it means that we have a tremendous amount of control over whether we become sick or attain optimal health. A well-trained health coach can partner with you to create an action plan that minimizes your risk of chronic disease. Chris Addley, Creative Chef & Champion of the Culinary Industry’s Rising Stars, Firebox Restaurant, Hartford, CT By Frances Wall Higgins hris Addley is a local Connecticut Chef that wears two crucial hats. He wears his chef hat as the creative genius behind the fine dining, farm-to-table meals at Hartford’s Firebox Restaurant, and he wears his culinary Professor’s hat as a mentor to many people who are learning the ins and outs of working in the culinary industry. Chris Addley is at the helm of an exceptional restaurant in Hartford’s Frog Hollow neighborhood.
C
Firebox’s story is as unique as its food. When you dine there, you directly support the work of non-profit Billings Forge Community Works (BFCW). Since both of their founding more than a decade ago by the Melville Charitable Trust, BFCW and Firebox have sought to be driving forces for community participation and empowerment of its neighbors. In addition to food access programming, BFCW trains individuals for careers in culinary, many of whom have multiple barriers to employment, including poverty, homelessness, past addiction or reentry after incarceration. They work through a 10-to 12-week paid program to learn crucial skills: cooking, baking and knife work; sanitation and ServSafe certification. Trainees complete externships at Firebox or one of the restaurant’s two sister cafes, both called The Kitchen (one is in Frog Hollow, and the other is Downtown at the Hartford Public Library). 85% of BFCW’s graduates then go on to gain employment at one of the three establishments or other area restaurants. That’s a rare “feel good” culinary experience that you will be glad to experience. 14
Natural Nutmeg - April 2019
This unique program is the reason Chris Addley chose to work at Firebox. “The community supports what we have created here and our hands-on approach to teach people is special. Our standard is very high, but we also have fun in the kitchen. If the trainees demonstrate eagerness, they rise higher in this business. Everyone working here is interested in our ‘food for good’ mission,” says Addley. About Chris as a Chef Chris unexpectedly fell into his culinary career in Ireland. He moved there to attend a Marine Biology School but ended up falling in love with the coastal restaurant business instead. He attended Lincoln Culinary School, and his career experience progressed from catering for large hotels to working at Deuxave, a lauded French restaurant in Boston. He returned to Hartford and heard of a unique high-end farm-totable restaurant called Firebox and applied to be their sous chef. Now, as Head Chef he can be as creative as the local produce, the New England fisherman’s catch and Connecticut butcher’s offerings that week.
Chris has a very close relationship with the local producers. “Each Monday I can count on an 8 a.m. call from Nunzio from Four Mile River in South Lyme who calls to let me know what he’s offering. Every Wednesday he comes in himself to drop off pork chops, ground beef, and bone marrow." Chris from Seacoast Mushrooms in Mystic grows the best blue oysters, shitake, morels, black trumpets that Addley has ever seen in his life. In the summer the farmers send him their lists of what is in season, and this drives what the menu will look like that week. Besides a few tried and true staples since the restaurant’s inception, Chris has created every single item on the menu along with his team. He believes in an atmosphere where everyone in the kitchen has a chance to flex their creative muscles. Stand out dishes are the P.E.I. MUSSELS with garlic, arugula, Pernod cream, and grilled filone; CAST IRON DUCK with goat feta polenta, spinach cranberry gastrique, and chocolate Guinness dust; and the 14 OZ RIBEYE with marrow butter, potato puree, crispy kale roasted seacoast mushrooms and the everchanging FIREBOX WINGS. The CHOCOLATE GUINNESS CAKE with Bailey’s mascarpone, macerated plums, and espresso bean gelato is worth the decadence.

your skin moist and healthy, which keeps your pores tight. Prickly pear also slows skin aging because it contains the highest levels of Betalains of any known plant. Betalains are super antioxidants with powerful antiaging effects. The high fatty acid content plumps the skin, reducing wrinkles and adds firmness, as well as intercepting free radical damage and will not clog your pores.
Why Are All Skin Creams White? By Richard Fanelli
I
f you think about it, most if not all skin creams are white. Ever wonder why? You see, base creams are used to initially make it feel like you are applying moisture to your face but skin creams are stripped down of their natural qualities and man-made chemicals are added to the formulation, instead of natural enzymes found in rare plant extracts. This is why you are left with a white, lifeless skin cream. These chemicals actually dry out your face and make you more reliant on their products. Immortal Opulence is a small company based right here in Connecticut. ing products, and is accredited to certify organic ingredients according to the NOP standards under the USDA. We make smaller batches under obsessive quality control, which maintains the natural color of the cream without stripping away the powerful enzymes which create the beautiful, silky transformation of your skin. True wild crafted plants have developed strategies to fight off insects, handle changing environmental conditions and produce powerful vital nutrients and enzymes to help ensure their own survival. Once harvested, they offer more in terms of health benefits and nutrients. Here are 3 of our special ingredients we have selected and why: 1. Amaranth Oil. The oil is left in its pure virgin form as it never left the seed. This is why the external application of amaranth oil can help dramatically improve skin quality, slowing the aging of skin, development of wrinkles and damage due to harsh environments. And surprisingly, amaranth oil also helps protect against other unwanted skin conditions. For external application purposes, amaranth oil is a natural moisturizer, penetrates the skin quickly, leaves no greasy feeling on the skin, blends well with other oils and never irritates the skin. 2. Wild Harvest Prickly Pear Cactus Seed Oil. A Moroccan oil, Prickly Pear contains the most Vitamin E of any beauty oil on the market (150 % more than Argan Oil), and the highest percentage of unsaturated fatty acids (88 %), making it an incredibly powerful oil for skin health. This reduces wrinkles and is a powerful free radical scavenger. This oil penetrates deeply without leaving behind a greasy residue. It restores elasticity and brightens the complexion and the high antioxidant activity stimulates cell renewal, leaving you with fresh, new skin. This oil intensely hydrates the skin and it is suitable for all skin types but works particularly well on dry, mature skin. A high Linoleic acid content soothes even the most dehydrated skin. Essential fatty acids in Prickly Pear Oil keep the collagen layer of
3. Sea Buckthorn Berry Oil. Sea buckthorn, also known as sea berry, is a small pea-sized fruit rich in over 190 nutrients and Omegas-3, 6, 9, and the elusive Omega-7. Put simply, Omega-7 can help to restore the skin's natural omega balance, protecting skin cells and aiding with the healing of cells. The Turkestanica Sea Berry is a subspecies harvested exclusively in the Himalayan Highlands at 12,000 feet above sea level. The harsh conditions in this high mountain area creates plants and berries which must develop powerful vital nutrients and enzymes to help ensure their own survival. Once harvested, they offer more in terms of health benefits and nutrients. The little orange berry used for over 13 centuries is wild-crafted and sustainably harvested and is the world’s richest source of Omega-7. While sea buckthorn grows all across the globe, this harvest comes exclusively from wild-growing fields in the Himalayan Mountains where a special subspecies of sea buckthorn grows called Turkestanica. With the presence of the legendary SOD (superoxide dismutase), among other valuable nutrients, it makes this sea buckthorn berry oil invaluable for your health and beauty routine. Omega-7 is hailed as a special nutrient that can protect, replenish, moisten and restore the skin. It is arguably a powerful alternative to Botox treatments. Consider this; approximately 60% of what you put on your skin gets absorbed into your bloodstream and then circulates throughout your entire body possibly affecting your organs too. This is why we as consumers must read labels to keep our bodies healthy. It's not only what we ingest but what we absorb. Every Thought You Think Releases Chemicals in Your Brain By Lisa Zaccheo, MA, BCH, BC
S
truggling with anxiety, panic attacks, a depression that comes from being chronically anxious? Maybe you have a phobia that's limiting your life, or you're attempting to cope with your emotions with cigarettes, alcohol, or food. You've probably tried a number of things in order to feel better, even traditional therapy or one of the many pharmaceuticals on offer. It's possible that you've even started giving up hope. There is help, and you'll find it in the most unlikely of places. Inside your mind… your subconscious mind that is. How do you access your subconscious mind? The answer is through hypnosis. To learn exactly how, go here https://www.mindmattershypnosis.com/how-it-works to watch the explanatory videos.
Many people believe that our mental/ emotional challenges are caused by a chemical imbalance, and that may be true, but how do these imbalances occur? Did you know that every thought you think, every perception you choose, every belief you hold releases chemicals in your brain that affect your whole system? Close your eyes, imagine there's a juicy lemon right in front of you. Imagine cutting it into quarters and taking a big juicy bite, then notice how your body responds. For many, there will be a pucker, some extra saliva, tightness in the jaw. These are all physiological responses that come from the mere thought of biting into a lemon and the chemicals those thoughts release in your brain, which in turn creates these body responses.
Here are some eye-opening statistics that support the abilities of the subconscious mind through hypnosis:
If you're constantly thinking “lemon” thoughts about yourself like, "I'm not good enough, I'm not capable, I'm not smart enough”, your body is going to be in a persistent state of pucker. You're going to feel anxious, depressed, panicky, and demoti-
• Psychoanalysis: 38% recovery after 600 sessions • Behavioral Therapy: 72% recovery after 22 sessions • Hypnotherapy: 93% recovery after 6 sessions Einstein said, "We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them." Nor can we use the same part of the mind that created the dis-ease to cure it. In my opinion, it's the perceptions that live in the conscious mind that create most of our challenges. Two people can experience the exact same thing, yet the impact of that experience will be completely different based on their unique perceptions.
vated. If, on the other hand, you're thinking strawberry thoughts (or whatever your favorite fruit is), your mental, emotional and physical body will be much more relaxed, happier, stronger and healthier. A full 85% of our health challenges are labeled functional vs. organic, which means they stem from something in the mental/ emotional body vs. the physical body. For those with anxiety, there can be a lot of body pain because of the tension it causes. People with depression also struggle with more pain, as well as stomach issues, migraines, insomnia, and weight gain. Body symptoms that trigger the feelings of anxiety or depression are very often caused by those exact feelings, which if left untreated can create a vicious cycle. Be sure to tune into how your physical symptoms make you feel emotionally because this is often your body's way of sharing information and helping you pinpoint where you need to work to clear up the mental and emotional components of your dis-ease.

Natural Nutmeg - April 2019
I’ll leave you with one more fun fact. Did you know that all pharmaceuticals have been tested against the natural power of the mind, otherwise known as the placebo? How about the fact that many of the drugs on the market, including the ones you may be taking, only beat the power of the mind by a very narrow margin? What I find most interesting is that if your body responds to a pharmaceutical, supplement or remedy, that means it has the receptors to receive that substance. If it has the receptors, it means that your body has the ability to naturally create a like substance. The bottom line is that our minds and bodies have the ability to create what we need to heal the majority of our dis-ease, with the help of the subconscious. Tap into your mind’s power to heal your mental, emotional and physical body today. “I’m living proof that hypnotherapy works and can do wonders for your mental, emotional and physical well-being. I can’t believe how different the session was from what I expected. I think everyone should try it and see what an amazing difference it can make in their life to help resolve fears, anxieties, and troubles.” - Terry from Unionville Lisa Zaccheo, MA, BCH, BC, is the owner, lead hypnotist and hypnosis instructor at Mind Matters Hypnosis Centers in Guilford and West Hartford, CT. ground zero, so I could start from a place of acceptance while working on the emotional stuff that you have to work on or you’ll just gain the weight back. We have to realize that it’s never about the food. You’re not fat because you like food. French women love food and they aren’t fat. You have to get out of the way of this delusion. Don’t have surgery if you’re not willing to do the work about WHY you’re an emotional eater. If you’re not willing to go deep, you’re going to gain the weight back. It’s not worth the pain and drama of surgery if you don’t want to do the inside work. If you don’t like yourself and you are filling the hole with food, you will find a way to gain the weight back.
Fat Chance: An Evening of Conversation and Story with Lisa Lampanelli at Ridgefield Playhouse By Diane Hayden, PhD
W
ith a career that spanned more than 30 years, Lisa Lampanelli was a constant on the comedy scene. With numerous tours, Grammy nominations, and national TV guest appearances and specials under her belt, Lisa made headlines in 2012 when she lost more than 100 pounds with the help of bariatric surgery. The comedian went on to speak with unflinching honesty about her lifelong food and body-image issues, and has since gone from insulter to inspirer. I had the pleasure of talking with her about her new direction in life. Lisa will perform at the Ridgefield Playhouse on Thursday, April 11th. DH: Lisa, what inspired the transition in your career from stand-up comedy to storytelling and workshops? LL: I realized that what was missing in my life was having a way to be of service to people. When my father got sick and passed away, I had helped take care of him in hospice. My biggest dread my entire life was of my dad dying, but the good part of that happening was I had a role in helping him transition. After I went through this, I really felt there was this lack of service in my life, so I said to myself, “Okay, I can start to give back by just telling the story of my food and body-image struggles.” What happened was I enjoyed that more than stand-up comedy! I just kept listening to what my spirit felt had joy in it and was a service to people. It’s also expanded my career because it opened me up to people who didn’t ap-
preciate insult comedy. This new style of storytelling is still connecting me with the audience and the audience with each other, but just in a different way. They get to hear stories that have a bigger point of self-love and self-acceptance, which still keeps them laughing and not taking themselves too seriously. DH: You speak about your struggles with weight and body image. How do you think this is helping people who have the same struggles? LL: In 2015, when I shot my fifth standup special, I noticed that my truthful stories about these issues resonated with my fans. Then when I wrote my play, “Stuffed,” which ran off-Broadway in 2016 and 2017. I went into it with the sole purpose of motivating fans to work on themselves and embrace a healthier life through self-love and selfacceptance. What also ended up happening is by seeing the fan reaction, I became inspired to retire from insult comedy and dedicate myself to helping others through storytelling events, workshops, and oneon-one coaching. I believe there’s a greater reason for why people struggle with certain things in life. You can’t hide who you are and you’re never “fixed.” There’s always work to be done on yourself. I know my work on myself will never end. DH: What advice would you give someone considering weight-loss surgery?
DH: What is one of the biggest lessons you’ve learned from your struggles with weight loss and body image? LL: Great question! Being comfortable with the discomfort. Recently after a show, I found myself with three cookies in my hand. I was thinking, “Don’t I get a reward for making this event good?” I was looking for relief. 90% of my eating was always to stamp down some emotion. I actually have had a couple of clients who eat until they’re uncomfortable and feel literally stuffed. I had to ask them, “Why do you like that feeling?” There is definitely an emotional reason. One client told me that she felt like she was too much for people -- too big, too loud, too boisterous -- so she had to make the feeling inside match as punishment. DH: What can people expect from coming to your show at the Ridgefield Playhouse? LL: If you like to laugh, definitely come. If you like to hear true stories you’ll relate to, definitely come. If you want me to yell at you, just book me for life coaching instead. Lisa Lampanelli dedicates her life to running transformational food and body-image workshops, performing in issue-oriented storytelling shows, and completing a rigorous life-coaching certification program and coaching clients one-on-one. “Fat Chance: An Evening of Conversation and Story with Lisa Lampanelli” showcases the former insult comic at her new best. From her humorous storytelling to her lively Q&A with audience members, the no-holds-barred entertainer is truthful, vulnerable and, most importantly, as hilarious as ever. www. ridgefieldplayhouse.org, 203-438-5795. For information on Lisa’s workshops and one-on-one coaching, go to www.lisalampanelli.com See ad on page 10.

The Emerging Field of Nutrition and Mental Health By James Osborne, MS, LPC and Martin Opoku, MD, ND
F
rom the time of the ancients until the 17th century everyone recognized the interconnectedness of the mind and body. The idea of viewing the mind and body as separate was a result of a philosophical argument (Cartesian Dualism) to understand thinking and what and how we can know. It was also the dividing line between science and religion. Mind, body and soul were no longer connected, so the body could be examined. It was not until Merleau-Ponty introduced the philosophical argument of the “living body” in Primacy of Perception that we begin to return to a union of mind/body in western thought. Western medicine still tends to view the body as something to be measured and explored, but Integrative Medicine is returning to the view that mind and body are aspects of a whole, like heads and tails of coins. The emerging field of Nutritional Psychiatry is conducting broad and extensive research in the area of diet, brain function, gut health and the risk of mental disorders. In this article we will look at some common mental health conditions and focus on what foods and dietary changes may impact health. Please note we are not suggesting that anyone stop their current medications and begin a specific regimen or diet. Nor are we saying that mental health challenges are a result of eating or not eating specific foods. It is important and imperative that one consults with their appropriate medical and mental health professionals. Some of the recommended foods may not be right for you, depending on allergies or dietary restrictions, either biological or by choice. Anxiety The DSM 5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders – Fifth edition) describes anxiety disorders as sharing features of excessive fear and anxiety. Fear is the emotional response to real or perceived imminent threat. Anxiety is anticipation of future threat. Anxiety disorders differ from one another in the types of objects or situations that induce fear, anxiety or avoidance behavior and the associated cognitive ideation. The basic principle underlying nutritional support in anxiety is to; 1. Eliminate all stimulants such as coffee, tobacco, tea, colas, soft drinks, alcohol, refined foods, food additives and coloring, and avoid processed foods especially hot dogs. 2. Provide crucial nutrients for proper neuronal function.

Foods that help with controlling anxiety are: 1. Complex carbs that increase serotonin: whole grain breads and cereals, brown rice; chocolate. 2. Folate and foods rich in B vitamins: beef, pork, chicken, leafy greens, legumes, oranges and other citrus fruits, nuts, rice and eggs. 3. Low-glycemic foods 4. Magnesium 5. Foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids: fatty fish like salmon, lake trout, herring, mackerel, anchovies and sardines. 6. Foods high in zinc: oysters, cashews, liver, beef and egg yolks. 7. Foods rich in tryptophan: turkey, chicken, bananas, milk, oats, cheese, soy, nuts, peanut butter and sesame seeds. 8. Probiotic foods: such as pickles, sauerkraut, kefir and kimchi. 9. Protein helps stimulate production of norepinephrine and dopamine: Greek yogurt, fish, meats, cheese, eggs, nuts, beans, soy and lentils. It is best to combine carbohydrates and protein throughout the day. Nutrients which are beneficial in the management of anxiety include: 1. Inositol: a supplement which is also found in legumes and whole grains has been shown through research to be as effective as SSRIs for anxiety. 2. EPA and DHA: found in fish oil and flax oil have also been shown to improve anxiety, and it has been shown that people who suffer from anxiety have lower levels of EPA and DHA. 3. Vitamin B6: abundant in whole grains, wheat germ, brown and red rice and oatmeal has been shown to increase serotonin level in people with anxiety. 4. Iron: found in dark green vegetables, beets, and black strap molasses, has also been shown to be statistically lower in people with anxiety. Iron increases serotonin levels so a diet high in iron is recommended for the management of anxiety. Other beneficial supplements which have been shown to help in the treatment of anxiety, and for which you need to consult your health care practitioner for correct dosing include; Niacinamide, Magnesium, GABA, Glycine, and Vitamin C.
Depression In the DSM 5, Depressive Disorders share the common feature of sad, empty, or irritable mood, accompanied by somatic and cognitive changes that significantly affect the person’s capacity to function. What differ among the disorders are issues of duration, timing or presumed etiology. There have been several studies linking some forms of depression with inflammation in the body. Foods that work as anti-inflammatories are: blueberries, raw oats, ginger, green tea, dark chocolate, wild salmon, turmeric, beets, broccoli, black beans, extra virgin olive oil, tomatoes, chia seeds, pineapple, spinach, whole grains, eggs, garlic, oysters and probiotic foods. The general principles underlying nutritional support for depression are: 1. Eat a lot of vegetables, whole grains, legumes, cold water fish, raw nuts and seeds. 2. Avoid caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, sugar and artificial sweeteners. 3. Identify and eliminate food sensitivities. Foods such as bananas, plums, and figs are high in serotonin and should be eaten on a regular basis to increase the natural pool of serotonin. Folic acid has been shown to help with depression. Folic acid is abundant in all green leafy vegetables so eating a lot of dark green vegetables is not only good for your overall health because of all the phytochemicals they contain but also because of the folate content. Vitamin B6 which can be found in whole grains, oatmeal, wheat germ, red rice, and brown rice has also been shown to be beneficial in the management of depression. Studies have confirmed that people with depression and anxiety have lower levels of DHA and EPA, the omega 3 fatty acids. Thus, increasing the consumption of omega 3 can improve depression. Omega 3 fatty acids can be found in flax oil or fish oil. Other nutrients beneficial in depression include: 1. SAMe: which has been shown in clinical trials to be comparable to tricyclic antidepressants (TCA) for the management of mild-moderate depression. 2.5HTP: which has been shown to be comparable to Prozac (fluoxetine) in the management of mild to moderate depression. 3. Chromium: which help functions in the metabolism of glucose, has been shown to improve mood in persons with depression. Risks for depression include processed foods, high fat dairy, sugar and sweet
deserts. Remember that alcohol is a central nervous depressant and can induce and/or exacerbate depression. ADHD, ADD Dietary interventions for ADHD and ADD have not been successfully replicated. The typical western fast food diet high in sugars, additives and simple carbs is not particularly good for anyone, especially young people with these conditions. There appears to be a connection for children with ADHD to develop Type 2 diabetes later in life. Therefore, limiting sugar intake is a good idea. In some studies children seemed to be deficient in Omega-3 and Omega -6 fatty acids. Implementing a balanced healthy diet including fish or seafood twice a week, eliminating excess sugar products and dairy would be beneficial. 64% of children diagnosed with ADHD may be experiencing a hypersensitivity to food. Exploring whether children or adults have food allergies or sensitivities may be beneficial as an intervention. Some studies suggest that heavy metal toxicity may have a relationship with some cases of ADD. Testing for heavy metals, especially Mercury, may be helpful and chelation for detoxification may be indicated. Food sources to help the conditions include salmon and trout; kiwis, papaya, pineapple and cilantro. DHA is an excellent supplement to add to the diet as is magnesium.

Autism Autism is a developmental disorder and is not caused or cured by diet. Dietary intervention may help the individual live a more manageable life. A GF/CF (gluten free/ casein free) diet has been suggested by the ARI (Autism Research Institute) based on 30 years of dietary interventions. They also recommend mercury detoxification. There are doctors specializing in the treatment of autism known as “DAN! Doctors” (DefeatAutism-Now!). You may wish to visit the website – www.autism.com for further information. Children with autism often have poor nutrition due to their unwillingness to accept many types of food. All milk and cheese products should be eliminated. Eggs, asparagus and cilantro are beneficial foods. Supplements such as Zeolite, monolaurin and DHA may prove helpful along with B complex vitamins depending on the individual’s ability to absorb nutrients. Dementia An anti-inflammatory diet is the best initial approach. We suggest Dr. Dale Bredesen’s dietary consideration in his book The End of Alzheimer’s. He introduces

his ReCODE program which is individualized based on laboratory results and values. The diet is referred to as Ketoflex 12/3. It is a largely plant based diet with an emphasis on non-starchy vegetables. The 12/3 refers to fasting times – at least 12 hours between the end of the last meal and the first meal of the following day with at least 3 hours minimum between the end of the last meal of the day and going to bed. The diet stresses eating whole foods and avoiding processed foods. Probiotics and prebiotics are included to support good gut health. Diets – Mediterranean, Plant-Based, Intermittent Fasting The Mediterranean Diet consists primarily of vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, legumes, potatoes, whole grain breads, herbs, spices, fish, seafood and extra virgin olive oil. One can eat in moderation poultry, eggs, cheese and yogurt. Red meats are rarely eaten. Sugar-sweetened drinks, sugar added products, processed meat, refined grains, refined oils and highly processed foods (anything labeled diet or low fat) are never consumed. The diet helps reduce inflammation and supports positive gut health. Plant based diets, avoiding all meats and dairy products, have shown reductions in anxiety, stress and depression, along with lower cholesterol and heart disease. For many maintaining a vegetarian or vegan diet may be difficult. Increasing the amounts of fruits and vegetables we eat daily, especially cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, kale, brussels sprouts, and other green leafy vegetables) will make a huge difference in our general and mental health. Intermittent fasting (Monk’s Diet) is not a diet in the usual sense of the word. It is merely allowing at least 12 -14 hours (16 hours is even better) between your last meal of the day and your morning meal with at least 3 hours between your last meal and going to bed. This length of time allows your body to enter a state of ketosis and promotes autophagy, a state in which the cells of the body including the brain recycle components and destroy damaged proteins and mitochondria. Intermittent fasting combined with a Mediterranean, Keto or Plant based diet will greatly improve physical and mental health. There are other factors for maintaining and improving our overall mental health. These include regular exercise; maintaining a healthy weight; positive self-care including meditation, relaxation or prayer; being aware (mindful) and having a sense of gratitude; social contact and maintaining friendships. All these factors play an important part in maintaining and improving our mental health and positive attitudes. Dr. Martin Opoku Gyamfi is a Medical Doctor and Naturopathic Physician. Do You Know Your Financial Health Vital Signs? By Caroline Wetzel
Y
ou know the drill. Every time you go to your doctor’s office for a consultation, there are certain vital signs that are always measured: your weight, your blood pressure, and your temperature. Whenever I am at the doctor’s office waiting my turn to be checked, I follow the same routine. I de-layer as much as possible, breathe deeply, and imagine rocking gently in a hammock swaying in the coastal breeze. I hope that the readings will reflect all my efforts to be as healthy as possible. I admit it. There are few things that I can do in that moment at the doctor’s office to really influence my vital signs. I take comfort as I await my results that the numbers aren’t static. When my appointment ends, in coordination with my doctor’s advice, there are activities that I can initiate to continuously monitor, improve, and sustain those numbers. When those numbers are in good shape, so is my overall physical, mental and emotional health. The same is true for your personal finances. For all of us – no matter how wealthy we consider ourselves at this moment – there are certain vital signs that we all must monitor regularly if we aspire to enjoy long term financial health.
Savings The first and most critical vital sign is savings: what percentage of your income are you saving each month? How much you need to save and the type of financial account you need to deposit your savings into varies according to your specific circumstance. Key factors to consider when calculating your minimal savings percentage include: • How much do you earn and when do you earn it? • What are your fixed costs? What expenses are discretionary and can be decreased or eliminated? • How much have you saved already and in what types of accounts are these savings? • When might you need to access your savings? How much money will you need at that time? A general savings percentage that many financial professionals suggest clients use is 15% of your gross salary, or what you earn before paying taxes. To make this easier and more fun, my family set up automatic savings and makes it an ongoing game to set
– and continuously try to beat – our family’s monthly savings. Emergency Fund The second most critical vital sign is how big is your emergency fund? Think of this as money that is easily available to you should you need to access it quickly, like if you experience a health set back or job loss. While some people claim that they can just use credit cards for this, I am not a fan of this approach. Depending on your overall financial situation and the interest rates on your credit card, you could end up paying a lot more for your emergency. The emergency savings account can be in the form of cash or money market funds so that you earn interest. Retain approximately six months’ worth of fixed expenses in this account. When you need to tap into your emergency fund to pay for a true emergency, ensure you replenish the funds as quickly as possible after life stabilizes following the emergency. Retirement Lifestyle For those of you who dream of retiring some day, the third most critical vital sign is how much income and savings you can www.NaturalNutmeg.com

count on to pay for your retirement lifestyle? I say “count on” because many factors we can’t imagine happening in the future may impact the retirement nest egg we think we have today. Gone are the days when Social Security and pension payments provide enough income for most retirees. On average, Social Security covers about 25% of needs, so it’s essential to plan long before retirement begins how you will source the remainder of your income requirements. Many planners encourage their clients who aspire to retire to anticipate needing to replace about 74% of their pre-retirement income. If as you digest these financial health vital signs you feel your own blood pressure rising, do what I do in the doctor’s office: take a deep breath. Remember that your financial vital signs – like your physical ones – are dynamic. You have the power to positively impact your financial future. Decisions you make today with your savings, spending, and investing are things that you can control. You are not alone on your journey to optimal financial health. Just as there are many medical practitioners to assist you with your physical vital signs, there are many financial professionals to help you with your financial vital signs. A financial expert who always has your best interests in mind, like a Certified Financial PlannerTM, can help you understand your financial vital signs today and provide you customized advice, guidance, and ongoing support as you achieve your optimal financial health in the future. Hope for Autoimmune Patients By Hannah Gale, N.D., LAc
M
ore and more people are being diagnosed with autoimmune diseases in our country every year. An autoimmune diagnosis may feel grim and confusing because the cause is often unclear, and the treatments are unappealing. The American Autoimmune and Related Diseases Association states that over 50 million Americans live with an autoimmune disease. It is accepted that there are 80-100 distinct autoimmune diseases and the causes of most autoimmune diseases remain unknown. It is thought that genes in combination with infections and other environmental exposures are likely to play a role. By definition, autoimmune diseases are those in which the immune system attacks organs, tissues, and cells causing injury to them. The CDC is unsure why the prevalence and incidence of autoimmune disease are on the rise. According to the American Diabetes Association, the incidence of Type 1 Diabetes rose 23% between 2001 and 2009. Type 1 Diabetes occurs when the immune system attacks and destroys the insulin producing cells in the pancreas. Celiac Disease is also on the rise with 1 in 133 people now affected. The rapid increase in autoimmune diseases suggests that environmental factors are involved, as genes do not change in such short periods of time. Auto Immune Diseases Affect Women and Minorities More Often Certain autoimmune diseases seem to be more prevalent in western countries. For instance, a 2017 study on worldwide incidence and prevalence of systemic lupus erythematosus found that the highest incidence and prevalence of SLE is in North America. Certain autoimmune diseases tend to be age specific, while others like Rheumatoid Arthritis, can affect any age group, although woman are 2-3 times more likely to be affected. Women have a higher risk in general, including those of African, Hispanic and Native American descent having a disproportionately higher risk. Symptoms of Autoimmune Disease The first symptoms are often fatigue, muscle aches, and a low fever with local inflammation, and as these are very general, it can be difficult for doctors to diagnose specific diseases. There are commonly flare ups and remissions, so by the time a patient gets in
to see their doctor, their symptoms seem to have resolved. Certain tests for general inflammation and immune factors can help raise suspicion of autoimmune disease, but specific diagnosis can be a lengthy process. New Research in Autoimmune Diseases The NIH released an article in April 2018 stating that the Epstein-Barr virus protein can “switch on” risk genes for autoimmune diseases and may trigger some cases of lupus. The fact that EpsteinBarr is one of the viruses involved in mononucleosis and that most people are exposed in childhood raises the question of why some people are potentially affected by this virus as an autoimmune trigger, while others are not. Naturopathic Medicine and Autoimmune Diseases Naturopathic Medicine is traditionally concerned with treating the root causes of disease, and therefore has examined factors such as: the GI microbiota, food immune reactions, stealth infections and molecular mimicry/cross reactivity as possible causes in the individual patient. We have found that in some cases, reducing the intake of food allergens, improving the GI health and microbiota, and/or the treatment of stealth infections can help resolve symptoms in some patients. At The Center for Natural Medicine, we have 30 years of experience in treating GI sensitivities and supporting the GI microbiota as part of individualized protocols for autoimmune disease relief. Lab testing can be helpful for diagnosing specific diseases and we use an array of tests that can help identify specific autoimmune diseases and underlying causes. Treatment is always individualized to take in to account the goals of the patient. Many of our patients do state that they have tried many things before coming to our clinic and they are so grateful that we were able to help them. Hannah Gale, N.D., LAc practices Naturopathic Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncture at the Center for Natural Medicine. Nutrition: A Reliable Method to Manage Mental Illness By Diana Zitserman, ND, LAc
E
ach year, mental illness affects 43.8 million or 1 in 5 adults nationwide. A growing body of evidence suggests that poor nutrition contributes to this epidemic. What’s more impressive is the nutritional research supporting the management of mental disorders, including depression, anxiety, ADHD, obsessivecompulsive, schizophrenia, eating and many mood disorders. Outside of counseling and cognitive behavioral therapy, medication has been first line of intervention for those suffering from a mental disorder. It’s far too easy to alleviate symptoms with medication than to address underlying cause of mental disturbance. Naturopathic medicine excels in addressing the underlying cause of mental health conditions. As we understand the foundational components of brain chemistry, our basic nutrition becomes the most affordable and reliable method to managing mental illness.

Balanced Diet Our brain is the central integration center for all organ functions. Its messages come from brain chemicals called neurotransmitters. When neurotransmitters are in balance, a person can experience feelings of positivity, reward, motivation, pleasure, and happy mood. Any imbalance or deficiency in neurotransmitters can cause aberrations in chemical signaling, giving rise to feelings of depression, anxiety, mood fluctuations, and behavioral changes. Deficiencies in neurotransmitters such as serotonin, gammaaminobutyric acid (GABA), dopamine, and norepinephrine are often associated with mood disorders. Their production requires adequate amounts of nutrients, including amino acids, minerals, B vitamins, and healthy fats. Amino Acids Many neurotransmitters depend on the availability of amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins. Eight out of 20 amino acids are considered essential and must be supplied through diet since our bodies cannot synthesize them directly. A high-quality protein diet can reduce neurotransmitter deficiencies. 1. Tyrosine. Tyrosine makes dopamine ‘the reward molecule,’ and norepinephrine ‘the motivating molecule.’ Studies show that L-tyrosine depletion in healthy women determines a decrease in neurotransmission, thus increasing risk of mood disorders. Food sources: grass-fed meats, fish, soybeans, nuts, seeds, eggs, dairy, beans, and whole grains. 2. Tryptophan. Tryptophan is an essential amino acid responsible for making serotonin ‘the happiness molecule’ and melatonin ‘the sleeping molecule.’ Studies show that consuming more dietary tryptophan can significantly reduce severity and reoccurrence of depression, seasonal affective disorder, insomnia, anxiety and manic states. Over 90% of serotonin is made in our intestines and platelets. Caution is warranted with supplementation, as it can lead to adverse effects. Food sources: grass-fed meats, nuts, seeds, spinach, soy, cheese, fish, beans, lentils, and eggs.
3. Glutamine. Glutamine makes the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate and the inhibitory neurotransmitter called GABA or ‘the calming molecule.’ In anxiety disorders, GABA is the primary inhibitory molecule to counterbalance the action of excitatory glutamate. Diets rich in monosodium glutamate (MSG) leads to overactive nervous system, causing ADHD, anxiety, mood and behavior changes. Gut bacteria, specifically Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, have the ability to produce GABA and directly signal the nervous system to reduce anxiety. Food sources: seafood, grass-fed meats, eggs, red cabbage, dark leafy greens, parsley, asparagus, nuts, beans, legumes. Mineral Deficiencies Multiple micronutrient deficiencies have been associated with depression, anxiety, and mood disorders. These essential cofactors are obtained through diet and are responsible for chemical reactions that synthesize key neurotransmitters. Our current food supply is considered nutrient deficient due to heavily depleted, chemically treated recycled soils. 1. Magnesium is required to produce serotonin, facilitate over 300 enzymes, and help relax nerve and muscle cells. Magnesium deficiency is associated with anxiety, depression, and elevated stress response. Food sources: nuts, seeds, legumes, whole grains, dark green leafy vegetables, dark chocolate. 2. Iron is required for production of dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. It influences brain maturation and deficiency may play a role in excitatory disorders like ADHD. Due to its oxygen carrying capacity, deficiency in iron can lead to anxiety, poor concentration, and panic attacks. Food sources: red meats, dark leafy greens, blackstrap molasses, beans and lentils. 3. Zinc protects the brain cells against potential free radical damage caused by inflammation. Its involvement in gene transcription is crucial, especially in involving emotion, learning and memory. Deficiency can induce depression and anxiety-like behaviors, while supplementation has improved the efficacy of antidepressant drugs in treatmentresistant patients. Food sources: oysters, beef, chicken, tofu, pork, pumpkin and hemp seeds, nuts, lentils, yogurt, oatmeal, and mushrooms.
Vitamin Deficiencies
Omega-3
Naturally found complexed together in vegetables and fruit, these water-soluble cofactors are necessary for metabolic processing of protein, sugar, and fat into useable energy for the body. Their collective effects are prevalent in energy production, DNA synthesis and repair, gene expression, and production of neurotransmitters related to mood regulation. Supplementation of nine vitamins that were 10 times greater than recommended dietary allowance (RDA) was shown to significantly improve mood in both men and women. In particular, vitamins B-6 (pyridoxine), B-9 (folate), and B-12 (cobalamin) are highlighted.
The brain and its nerve extensions are composed of 60% fat. These brain lipids are structural membrane components, made up of 50% polyunsaturated fatty acids, out of which about 33% belong to the omega-3 family. The two omega-3 fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are essential. Highly concentrated in fatty fish (salmon), sardines, flaxseeds, and walnuts, these fatty acids induce anti-inflammatory effects on tissues by producing chemicals involved in the body’s immune defenses and reduction in pro-inflammatory signaling. Accumulating evidence suggests a direct link between high omega-3 fatty acid consumption and lower incidence rate of mental disorders.
1. Folate and B-12 are responsible for liver detoxication, nerve conduction and regrowth, DNA repair, and mood stabilization. These vitamins help to reduce an inflammatory compound called homocysteine that is related to elevated anxiety or depression levels. Genetic mutations in MTHFR gene contribute to rising levels of homocysteine and deficiencies in folate and B12. Food high in folate: dark leafy greens, beans, legumes, lentils, asparagus, broccoli, soy. Foods high in B12: organ meats, chicken liver, fish, eggs, nutritional yeast, dark leafy greens. 2. B-6 is the single cofactor responsible in protein breakdown into useable amino acids. Diets low in protein and vitamin B-6 can greatly contribute to any neurotransmitter deficiency. B-6 works with folate and B-12 during liver detoxification, and has been shown to be a potent monotherapy in treating mood disorders and autism. Food sources: beef liver, meat, fish, beans, legumes, nuts, seeds, potato, banana, avocados.
In summary, the most common nutritional deficiencies seen in patients with mental disorders are those of omega–3 fatty acids, B vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. Personalized nutrition aims to correct dietary imbalance and replenish micronutrient deficiencies in order to improve brain chemistry and mental health outcomes. Why is My Immune System Attacking Me? By Kathryn Firisin, ND
D
o you or anyone you know suffer from diseases such as Type 1 Diabetes, Psoriasis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis, Systemic Lupus, Hashimoto’s, or Irritable Bowel Syndrome? At first these conditions seem very different from one another, some involving muscles, joints and nerves while others seem to affect the digestive system and skin. What could these complex and very different diseases have in common? They are among the 80-100 different autoimmune conditions that have been identified by researchers. Autoimmune conditions are categorized by a dysregulation of the immune system whereby the immune cells begin to attack the body’s own organs and tissues. Over the past 30 years, the incidence of autoimmune diseases has increased by a staggering 19% with costs to the healthcare system of over 100 billion dollars as compared to cancer at about 57 billion dollars. Autoimmune disease commands roughly 591 million dollars in funding for research annually but nearly 5 times that amount is spent researching heart disease and nearly 12 times that is spent on cancer research, both with significantly lower prevalence. Focus on Treating the Cause Common conventional medicine treatments largely emphasize pharmaceuticals that suppress or stop the immune system. These medications often disrupt an individual’s normal immune function making them more susceptible to 28
Natural Nutmeg - April 2019
other diseases and infections. Additionally, many medications come with lists of side effects that create a new set of problems. There are many factors that have been identified as triggers for immune dysfunction. Environmental toxins, stress, food reactions, medications and vaccines are the most common. When we focus treatment on identifying and treating the cause of these diseases rather than suppressing the immune system, we can begin to move the body in the direction of healing and attempt to restore normal immune function. Gut Health The digestive tract is the only internal organ system that is actually continuous with the outside environment making it particularly susceptible when exposed to unhealthy things in our diet and the outside world. It would stand to reason that the health of the gut, the wall of the intestine and the good bacteria that live there would be an important army in creating a barrier between our internal environment and the outside world. Both dysbiosis, or an imbalance of healthy gut bacteria, and adverse food reactions lead to a disruption in this barrier allowing for autoimmune diseases to develop. The microbiome, or bacteria in the intestines, is made up of trillions of different species of bacteria. This colonization of bacteria works in concert with the body’s immune system to create a defense against the intestinal wall. The microbiome also provides vital nutrients
for a variety of functions in the human body. Any disruption of this system such as a lack of “good” bacteria commonly known as probiotics, or an overgrowth of “bad” bacteria or pathogenic bacteria, can lead to inflammation and changes in immune function. These alterations in the microbiome can be caused by toxin exposure through food and the environment, internal production of toxins within the gut, consuming known food allergens or intolerances, prescription drugs, antibiotics, and stress. Consumption of food allergens and toxins results in increased intestinal permeability or “leaky gut” meaning that the absorption of the contents of the gut is amplified and the body takes in things it doesn’t want or need. These perceived “invaders” then trigger immune complexes that circulate through the body and begin to cause damage and eventually disease. Systemic Lupus Erythematous is a known autoimmune disease affecting at least 1.5 million people in the U.S. Research has shown that certain bacteria promote the onset and progression of the disease upon the penetration of the “leaky” intestinal wall. In cases of Type 1 Diabetes (T1D), studies indicate that intestinal hyperpermeability occurs prior to the onset of the disease. Food Allergies and Intolerances Adverse food reactions can be classified as allergies, sensitivities and intolerances. Often a patient will see an allergist for the standard skin prick test and
find that they are allergic to things such as nuts, pollen or cats. They may have a severe allergy and anaphylactic reaction or complaints of stuffy nose, watery eyes, or itchy throat. This represents only one type of immune reaction. There are other delayed and chronic immune reactions that can be assessed and contribute to a dysfunctional immune system. In addition, an individual may have food intolerances that do not directly involve the immune system but involve nutritional deficiencies and the body’s ability to break down and eliminate certain foods. Clinical research has shown that the resulting “leaky gut” related to these adverse food reactions is an important causative factor in many autoimmune conditions. Naturopathic doctors can further evaluate patients to differentiate these types of reactions. Restoring Gut Health Now that we understand the physiological mechanisms that contribute to autoimmune diseases, how can these causes be addressed? How do we repair the microbiome and the “leaky gut”? Each autoimmune disease may have a unique presentation of symptoms and each individual may have unique triggers for immune dysfunction. While individuality in treatment is important, there are several areas of focus that will help most people suffering with autoimmune diseases. 1. Reducing stress is critical. Stress has been shown to adversely affect the gut microbiome. A review of randomized control trials including data from 1602 participants showed a significant change in immune cell activity after participation in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction. Guided mediation, yoga, prayer and time spent in nature have all been shown to reduce stress and would therefore improve immune function. 2. Decrease environmental toxins. Promoting the body’s ability to eliminate toxins is another important aspect of treatment for autoimmune diseases. Herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, car exhaust, mercury amalgam fillings, plastics, detergents and household cleaners make up only a fraction of the potential sources of toxins in our environment. Research has shown an increased incidence of Lupus among farmers exposed to herbicides and pesticides. Reducing exposure to such toxins by choosing cleaner products used both in and around the home, consuming unprocessed organic whole foods, and having mercury fillings removed are
ways to begin mitigating environmental exposure known to affect autoimmunity. Participating in a supervised detoxification program with a licensed naturopathic doctor can significantly reduce the body’s toxic burden and improve immune function. Including foods that improve detoxification such as spirulina, chlorella, turmeric, ginger, leafy greens, broccoli and other cruciferous vegetable, garlic and of course increasing your water intake will help your body manage toxin exposure on a daily basis. 3. Eliminate processed foods. One of the easiest ways to affect autoimmunity and the gut microbiome is through our diet. A recent study from 2018 provided evidence that artificial sweeteners are toxic to gut bacteria. Eliminating foods that are known to disrupt gut bacteria and cause inflammation such as sugar, processed and packaged foods, artificial food dyes and sweeteners, and alcohol will improve the health of the digestive tract. 4. Determine adverse food reactions. Celiac Disease is an example of an autoimmune disease for which there is specific testing available to evaluate tolerance of gluten. Unfortunately, it is not as straight forward for other conditions. Naturopathic doctors are able to go a step further and evaluate an individual’s adverse food reaction triggers. By determining these foods and avoiding them, the body is able to begin healing the “leaky” intestinal wall and rebuilding the immune system. 5. Add herbs and probiotics to your diet. Oregano oil, Berberine, Artemisia Asia, and Peppermint are herbs that may be used in eliminating the “bad” microbes. Probiotics in the form of capsules, powders, and fermented foods are critical in treating autoimmunity and “leaky gut”. Eating yogurt is just not enough, even if it’s Greek yogurt! Finding a good quality probiotic with at least a 10 billion count of bacteria and a variety of different microbial strains is necessary for efficacy. Consulting a holistic healthcare provider can help guide you to a highquality product. 6. Check Vitamin D levels. Ensuring optimal Vitamin D levels is important for all individuals with autoimmune disease. Vitamin D is not a vitamin, it’s a hormone! Like all hormones, Vitamin D is responsible for many things in the body including calcium regulation and bone metabolism as well as immune

regulation. Vitamin D has a very specific role in activating detoxification pathways that eliminate a substance called Lithocholic acid, a bile acid that is toxic to the cells of the intestinal wall. Some probiotics actually increase Vitamin D levels. Vitamin D also increases the activity of peptides that increase intestinal barrier function. While many people know that Vitamin D is important for their immune system, much of this mechanism occurs through the gut and the microbiome thereby effecting autoimmunity. Autoimmune diseases are extremely complex conditions that require an individualized approach. However, these common factors can influence the development, onset, and severity of symptoms in autoimmune diseases. Naturopathic doctors work directly to stimulate the body’s vital force or the ability of the body to heal itself. By eliminating toxicity, providing adequate nutrients, building a robust microbiome, and stimulating the body to restore normal immune function, individuals with autoimmune disease have another approach to consider when navigating their health. As research catches up to the art of medicine, natural options for treatment will be more readily available. Autoimmune disease, like all of us, is marked by diversity and challenges. It is shared understandings across these varied conditions that will bring us forward to health and healing. Anxiety At An All Time High?
• Eating good/healthy foods can also help relieve some of the stress/ anxiety you may be feeling. Some good foods to eat are:

nxiety is at an all-time high. People are overwhelmed with their everyday lives, activities of children, overwhelming jobs, caring for aging parents and over extending themselves with volunteer work. People just don’t have enough “down time.” Add the issue of clutter and chaos in your home to the overwhelm, or health issues that make you feel worn out, exhausted and downright yucky. You then go down memory lane and look at all your regrets from the past. How are you going to get peace into your life? How are you going to have more enjoyable days? Daily you try to endure a mental barrage of what you should be doing and what you aren’t doing. How can you calm your mind, remove those thoughts and live in the abundant peace meant for you to have? One of those ways is “living in the now.” Be in the present…even if it’s hard, difficult and not a pleasant situation. Just be there. Know that “this too shall pass.” It may take some time, but it will eventually be over. Why is it important to be in the now… in the present? • Because it helps you to stop living in regret wishing for time to go away or wishing you could go back to the past and redo it.
• Remember that whatever you focus on becomes your reality. Don’t spend your time mulling over and over what you are going through. Accept that this is where you are but keep your eyes on where you want to go.
• It helps you to stop living in fear, anxiety or worry. How can you stay in the present… in the now?
• Asparagus: contains folic acid that can help fight depression. • Avocado: contains B vitamins known as stress helpers.
• Make the decision that you will be there. It’s really that simple. Once you make the decision, the next step becomes easier.
• Blueberries: contains antioxidants and vitamin C to reduce high blood pressure and lower cortisol levels.
• Stop thinking about the past and definitely stop projecting or worrying about what the future will hold, especially if you are taking your current situation and projecting it into the future.
• Wild-caught salmon: contains Omega-3s that can help reduce inflammation (which occurs when we are stressed). It can help keep your cortisol and adrenaline levels from rising.
• Stop using words like, “I’m so worried, I’m so afraid, I don’t know what’s going to happen.” • Make some plans. Just because you are in the “now” doesn’t mean you shouldn’t come up with a plan for moving forward. Being in the now is more of an emotional presence where you look at the situation and accept where you are without being on an emotional roller coaster. • When you feel worry and anxiety creep up on you, get into a mode of gratitude. Be grateful for what you are going through knowing that there is a lesson to learn from all of it.
• It helps you avoid taking on condemnation. “I’m so stupid to let this happen.”
• Go for a walk. Enjoy nature. Enjoy your environment. Look at the beauty that is around you. No matter how difficult your situation is, there is beauty around you.
• It stops you from saying, “When this is over, I’ll be happy, at peace, joyful.” Don’t wait for the circumstance to change to be happy, at peace and joyful. Those are emotions you can make a decision to walk in now.
• Journal. I actually have journals for every year since 1996. Researchers have found that journaling is a healing way to relieve stress. It can help you think through a difficult situation and solve the problem.
Make that decision today to be in the “now.” Enjoy each day as it comes. If you desire to be in that place but find it difficult and need some “guidance” then reach out to me. Let’s have a “free” 30-minute phone consultation. Feel free to contact me at info@ReginaSanchez.com or 860.874.8515 or check out my website at www.ReginaSanchez.com. Three Phases to Naturally Treating Autoimmune Disease By Jaquel Patterson, ND
I
personally became aware of the complexity of autoimmune conditions as an adolescent when my mother was diagnosed with lupus and rheumatoid arthritis and suffered the challenges of these illnesses. I learned quickly that autoimmune conditions can take different paths and intensities but follow the same fundamental core issue, your immune system is mistakenly attacking your body. Autoimmune conditions damage your tissues and organs and can’t tell the difference between foreign cells and your own cells. Though there are no scientifically proven reasons why the immune system inappropriately misfires, there are some commonalities in why some individuals having a greater risk than others. For example, there are genetic susceptibilities like lupus that runs in families, women are at twice the risk particularly during child bearing years, and ethnic groups are affected more, particularly African American and Hispanic women. There are more than 80 types of autoimmune conditions and some of the most common ones include rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, lupus, multiple sclerosis and Type 1 diabetes. Each of these conditions attack different cells in the body. It often takes several doctors before a diagnosis occurs and the symptoms can mimic other conditions or be vague and unclear. Additionally, individuals may have flare-ups where symptoms get worse or symptoms may even disappear. Common symptoms in autoimmune conditions include fatigue, body pain, swelling, redness and a low-grade fever. It is important to seek care from a medical provider if any of those symptoms persist and to ensure appropriate blood tests are completed. Lab work must be paired with clinical symptoms to be diagnosed with an autoimmune condition. Is there anything we can do for an autoimmune condition outside of medication? Absolutely! Here are some key areas to support autoimmune conditions that have been successful in my practice: 1.
Phase I: Assessment/Identification of Barriers.
It important to initially complete comprehensive blood work with your provider to rule out and increase specificity of autoimmune condition type. In our office, we complete specialty autoimmune test panels that include 32 markers. Additionally, it is good 32

to consider other infectious disease types that may contribute to symptoms or may be the true source, for example, Lyme disease, or Epstein-Barr virus. I have seen a multitude of patients with these conditions which mimic autoimmune conditions causing symptoms like fatigue and migratory joint pain. 2.
Phase 2: Strengthen/Fortify.
Stress may aggravate an autoimmune condition and initiate flare-ups. Stress can cause low energy, insomnia and altered circadian rhythm. Long term stress and even acute stress in many instances affect the adrenal glands, therefore, it is important to support your adrenal gland functioning. Consider adaptogenic herbs like Rhodiola rosea, Siberian ginseng, Ashwaganda, or Holy Basil. They have their own individual function and support your body’s ability to manage stress and regulate to the needs of your body at any given moment. One of my favorite herbs to help with anxiety and stress is l-theanine which promotes calmness, supports the brain and stimulates GABA, the relaxing neurotransmitter. Other herbs like Valerian and Passionflower can aid with sleep problems like having trouble falling and staying asleep. Additionally, nutritional supplementation with B vitamins and Vitamin C which support the adrenal gland functioning are important. Since the immune system is overstimulated in an autoimmune condition, I look to support the system long term with immunemodulating supplementation. Consider herbs like Smilax, Reishi mushroom, and Ashwaganda. Artemesia has been widely studied for immune-modulation for lupus especially in the summer months that induce flares and is also helpful for spirochetes like Lyme. Supplementation that increases immunoglobulins are good sources of support; e.g. Colostrum, or other bovine or egg derived immunoglobulin concentrates, if no food allergies are present. Immunoglobulins additionally support the intestinal tract. I also utilize low dose immunotherapy/LDI, a specialized therapy, that down-regulates TH2, the part of the immune system that is overreacting; this is a good long-term strategy. When active inflammation is present, some key anti-inflammatory herbs include Curcumin and fish oil high in Omega 3. 3.
Phase III: Support Detoxification Pathways.
Individuals with autoimmune conditions often have digestive tract issues. I usually recommend a high dose probiotic; over 50 billion, in addition to spore based probiotics. It is beneficial to
alternate probiotics regularly to mimic how you would naturally receive them from foods. It may be recommended to be on supplements for GI repair like l-glutamine, or DGL. I frequently use Arabinogalactan/ Larch which is a pre-biotic, source of fiber, and stimulates the immune system. Autoimmune conditions often affect proper excretion through the kidneys and need strengthening of the pathways through the liver, sometimes due to high medication usage. Liver supporting supplements include liposomal glutathione; vegetables like broccoli, dandelion greens, and spinach; NAC; milk thistle and artichoke. For kidneys, hydration is important, eating less sugary and processed foods, and unsweetened cranberry juice, amongst others. In addition to the key areas identified above, it is important to make lifestyle changes and to avoid foods that are more pro-inflammatory like red meat, saturated fat, simple sugar and processed meat. For many of my patients, we may consider the autoimmune paleo diet on the initial onset of disease and a maintenance plan thereafter. These recommendations are highly beneficial to overall health and management of your autoimmune condition and proper care with a trained ND professional will help to keep your symptoms at bay. Natural Ways to Promote Breast Health & Prevent Breast Cancer: Part 1 By Erika Dworkin, Board Certified in Holistic Nutrition® "Not counting some kinds of skin cancer, breast cancer in the United States is: The most common cancer in women, no matter your race or ethnicity; the most common cause of death from cancer among Hispanic women; the second most common cause of death from cancer among white, black, Asian/Pacific Islander, and American Indian/Alaska Native women."
More than one assault from carcinogenic hormones, chemicals, viruses, traumas, and/or radiation, is usually necessary to damage a normal cell’s genetic material to the extent that it develops into a cancerous cell. By the time a malignant breast tumor appears as a lump, it may have been growing for 8-12 years.
~ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, https://www.cdc.gov/cancer/breast/statistics/index.htm
While the breast cancer risk factors discussed below are entirely in a woman’s control, others are not, including: (1) Age: most frequent in women over age 50; (2) Breast Tissue Density: dense breast tissue can resemble or obscure tumors in mammographic screenings; researchers in one study determined that their female subjects with at least 75% dense breasts showed five times more likelihood of cancer than women with less than 10% density; (3) Genetics: risk at least doubles in women whose mothers, sisters, or daughters, had breast cancer before age 65; mutations in the tumor-suppression genes BRCA1 and BRCA2, found in only 5-7% of women diagnosed (often in Ashkenazi Jewish women), increases risk mainly in those whose female relatives have had breast or ovarian cancer; (4) Geography & Environment: most frequently develops in women in industrialized, highly polluted countries; and (5) Race: occurs less often in black, Hispanic, and Asian women than in Caucasians.
"There is no one right formula for preventing breast cancer in every woman. The key to prevention...is being aware of the various factors that cause the disease and avoiding them as much as possible, while at the same time being aware of what discourages cancerous growth in breast tissue and promoting that kind of lifestyle." ~ What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Breast Cancer: How Hormone Balance Can Save Your Life, John R. Lee, MD
W
hile breast cancer causes more than 40,000 American deaths per year, the true lifetime risk of developing the disease is estimated at only 12% (1 in 8). Genetics do account for approximately 20% of all breast cancers, but the disease is recognized as one of long duration that allows for healthy decisions over a lifetime to diminish that risk and prevent it altogether. So, the good news is that you can begin making selfempowering lifestyle, environmental, and dietary changes right now to increase your chances of being free of breast cancer in the future. While breast cancer prevention is an enormous topic, the information below, and in Part 2 of this article, serves as a primer to help you start moving in the right direction. How Breast Cancer Develops Most of the cells of the human body continually divide, regenerate, and die, and new replacement cells ultimately differentiate into their designated special tissue types. Slower breast cell division correlates with lower breast cancer risk. While there are multiple breast cancer classifications, the disease most commonly originates from the inner lining of milk ducts, or from the lobules that supply the ducts with milk. It generally develops when breast tissue cells, which lose their ability to differentiate and die at a genetically predetermined pace, divide and grow without control and accumulate into a mass of extra tissue called a tumor. A cancerous tumor grows through the generation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis), which then divert the blood supply and nutrients from surrounding healthy tissues. 34

Key Breast Cancer Risks
The Conventional Approach Traditional medicine focuses on early detection and reducing the risk of dying from breast cancer rather than on its prevention. “Early-stage" invasive cancers are considered to be very treatable since tumors are relatively small and the cancer cells have not metastasized to other organs. To promote early detection, conventional practitioners generally recommend annual clinical breast exams, monthly self-examinations, mammograms, and other diagnostic tests (i.e., sonograms, MRIs, and digital infrared thermal imaging (DITI)/thermograms). Mammogram frequency guidelines can be confusing since many studies on which they are based are conflicting, various authoritative organizations periodically update them, and all do not completely agree on the best approach. A patient-centered, individualized approach to early breast cancer detection would ideally take these considerations into account: (1) mammograms are X-rays, and thus involve the use of cancer-causing radiation (all X-rays have cumulative effects); (2) since mammograms do not detect 20-30% of all tumors, reliance on them may delay cancer diagnosis; (3) 80% of “suspicious” mammogram results that call for a biopsy do not lead to cancer
diagnoses; (4) in women over age 50, some maintain that mammography should be used to evaluate suspicious lumps rather than screen for cancer when no symptoms are present; and (5) DITI-thermography (a 15-minute non-invasive, painless, FDA-registered test that does not involve radiation) allows for detection 5-10 years earlier than what is possible through any other available technology/exam. If breast cancer is detected, an oncologist may recommend surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, hormone therapy, and/or vaccine therapy. An ideal approach would also incorporate nutritional supplementation, dietary modification, periodic or ongoing detoxification, proper blood sugar and thyroid management, and monitoring of DHEA and melatonin levels. The Natural Approach The natural approach to long-term breast health incorporates the evidencebased concepts of chemoprevention (the use of specific agents to prevent cancer) and epigenetics (the study of long-lasting changes in gene function without changing gene structure/genetic code/DNA, which has proven that nutrients can be used to turn genes on and off). Properly applied chemopreventive practices may block the development of normal cells into invasive tumors, eliminate pre-malignant cells, and stop cancer before it is detectable or causes symptoms. Certain nutrients have been shown in scientific studies to activate tumor-suppressor genes, or those that trigger the normal death of defective cells. Combining critical lifestyle changes with an arsenal of protective nutrients can serve as a powerful force against breast cancer development. Some Key Lifestyle Choices 1. Estrogen & Xenoestrogen Exposure: The length of exposure to estrogen (taken as a prescription drug, delivered as a patch, or produced by the body) and xenoestrogens (chemical estrogens that interrupt natural hormone balance) in any form positively correlates with breast cancer risk, in part due to the promotion of estrogen dominance relative to levels of progesterone. Xenoestrogens from the environment include: commercially-raised meat and dairy products; insecticides/pesticides; city tap water; parabens and phenoxyethanol in mainstream body care; bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates in soft plastics and Styrofoam; artificial food additives, including sweeteners and MSG; soy pro-

3. Harmful Habits: Alcohol consumption and cigarette smoking (even second-hand smoking) to any extent increases breast cancer risk: (1) 1 drink/day – 11% increase; (2) 2 drinks/day – 2240% increase; and (3) 3 drinks/day – 33-70% increase. Cigarettes contain over 4,000 chemicals, 250 of which are known to undermine health, and there is a clear, significant association between cigarette smoking and breast cancer. 4. Pregnancy & Breast Feeding: Having a child before age 30 increases estriol, a protective form of estrogen that is far weaker than the more dangerous estradiol. Estriol greatly slows breast cell division and thus reduces cancer risk. Numerous studies have shown that a mother’s risk for breast cancer declines the longer she breast feeds, as long as she does so for at least 3 months. Some evidence indicates that a breast-fed female infant may also have a lower breast cancer risk. 5. Weight Management: Obesity generally increases breast cancer risk by at least 30%, and obese postmenopausal women (BMI > 30) have a 400% higher risk. One explanation is that fat cells in belly fat produce hormones, some of which promote tumor growth (including leptin and the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-6).
Salt therapy is:
36
2. Exercise: Women who engage in moderate aerobic exercise for as little as 30 minutes, 3-5 times per week, can decrease their breast cancer risk by 25-80%. Although not fully understood, exercise is thought to protect against breast cancer at least in part by: (1) decreasing endogenous estradiol (a form of estrogen); (2) increasing menstrual cycle length and thus reducing estrogen production; (3) assisting with weight management; (4) improving immunity; (5) helping to preserve longer telomeres of chromosomes to promote longer lifespan; and (6) doubling the chance of survival in breast cancer patients.
6. Diet: Maintaining a healthy diet is one of the most critical steps a woman can take to protect herself against breast cancer. Studies associate the Mediterranean diet with a 50% lower risk in women who follow it than those who follow the standard American diet. The Mediterranean diet calls for high intake of vegetables (especially green, cancer-protective cruciferous), fiber, fish, low-sugar fruits, and unsaturated oils (especially omega-3 fatty acids in fish, chia, and flax oil, and high-oleic olive and avocado oils), and low consumption of refined carbohydrates/sugars, trans- and saturated fats, processed foods, and meat. Lifestyle modification is an important first measure to promote overall breast health and lower breast cancer risk, but so much more can be done. Watch for Part 2 of this article to learn which dietary supplements can best support your efforts to stay free of this highly complex, potentially deadly disease. Monetize Your Mission …Through Marketing Your Solutions By Robin Clare, MBA enjamin Franklin is quoted as saying, “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail. This is incredibly true, even in your small business. I recently received a call from a prospective client who needed advice on how to open a successful holistic business. I suggested that we create a business plan using my Planning for Success™ business planning model. She replied, “I don’t think I need a business plan, can you just tell me what to do?”
B
That response made me realize that most new entrepreneurs don’t know the high level standard business concepts that it takes to starting a successful business. It inspired me to share the 12 steps of the Planning for Success™ model to get you thinking about your unique business and what is truly required to be successful. STEP 1: Personal Branding Identify your purpose, skills, training and life experience. Uncover your true expertise and determine how you can best serve the world. This first step allows you to demonstrate credibility to the potential market that you want to work in. STEP 2: Problem Solving Pinpoint the problem(s) that you are solving for your clients. This second step enables you to clearly articulate what problems your potential clients have and how you can solve these problems with your unique skills. STEP 3: Potential Clients Define your clients in three tiers (ideal, middle of road and no thanks!) to determine your target audience. Which type of clients are you most excited to work with? It is important to identify these three tiers to prioritize your time and energy. STEP 4: Perfect Solution Define the solution that meets the needs of your ideal client. Yes, create your
business with your ideal client in mind. It’s time to develop a working title of your product or service and determine what is the tagline for your business. Remember to create your perfect solution based on Step 2. STEP 5: Product Delivery Develop a multi-faceted delivery system to ensure multiple streams of income. In your business, you should have a funnel that enables clients to work with you based on their financial comfort level. From free content, to one session, to a series of sessions, to committing to a long term program with you – options are key. STEP 6: Profit Projection Identify your goal(s) for your products and services in your delivery system. Your goals and objectives should be concrete, measurable and realistic. It is important to develop specific strategies and create a budget of income and expense per goal, strategy or operating need. STEP 7: Powerful Offer Create your irresistible offer by sharing benefits and how your product or service will relieve the pain points of your ideal clients. When you identify the pain points and benefits for your clients, it makes it easy for them to see that the solution that you are offering is the one that they have been searching for. STEP 8: Proof of Concept Test your perfect solution concept with a discounted offer to potential clients. In exchange, require their feedback and testimonial on your products and services. STEP 9: Product Creation Design your core product or service with feedback received from Step 8. Create your product or service in the various modes of delivery previously defined in Step 5. Infuse your creative process with the joy you will feel when you present your ideal clients with their much needed perfect solution.
STEP 10: Perfect Your Pitch Develop a pitch to sell your ideal client on your perfect solution to their problem. Be able to articulate their problem while confidently expressing your solution and your solid offer. Say what you need to say and then be quiet and let the potential client speak. Have confidence that your solution is their best strategy. STEP 11: Promotion and Marketing Strategy Develop a marketing strategy and create informative and actionable marketing materials and implement a public relations plan to ensure the marketplace knows about your amazing solution. This includes social media marketing, email marketing and printable information for your office. Step 12: Personnel Strategy Ensure that you have the team in place to make your solution a true success. BERNIE
By Bernie Siegel, MD
Understand Why
L
et me tell you about people who have been my teachers. The first is a teenager who was sexually abused by his parents who now has AIDS. When he was about to commit suicide by jumping in front of a subway train I asked him why he didn’t kill his parents instead. He said, “I never wanted to be like them.” Love has sustained him and he is alive today. Another young man with a life threatening illness said, “What is evil is not the disease. Many great creative works will come from individual suffering, but what is evil is to not respond with compassion to the person with the illness.” An example are parents I know who because they lost a young child are improving the lives of other children and raising funds to find a cure for the disease which took their child so other children will not have to die as their child did. How do we turn our afflictions into blessings? How do we use them to help us complete ourselves and our work and understand the place for love, tolerance and kindness? Justice and mercy must both be a part of how we treat those who terrorize because when you understand you can forgive, and when you can forgive you do not hate and when you do not hate you are capable of loving and love is the most powerful weapon known to man. It is not an accident that we say, kill with kindness, love thine enemies and torment with tenderness. If we are going to eliminate war we must love our children more than we hate our enemies. When we raise a generation of children with compassion and when parents let their children know they are loved, teachers truly educate them and not just inform them, then we will have a planet made up of the family of man where our differences are used for recognition and not

persecution. Words and experts cannot be our Lord. Living is more difficult than dying and we are all here to learn what it is to hurt and be hurt and only then will we be perfect enough to love and be loved. Someday we will all come to understand that in love’s service only the wounded soldier can serve. In closing let me say that as a surgeon I know something you may not; that we are all the same color inside and members of one family. To paraphrase Rabbi Carlebach, let us hope that some day all the Cains, will realize what they have done, and ask for forgiveness of the Abels they have killed. In that moment we will all rise and become one family accepting that we are here to love and be loved. Until that moment may you accept and learn from your mortality what is truly important in the time of your life; rather than from further disasters. For many, Dr. Bernard Siegel-or Bernie, as he prefers to be called-needs no introduction. He has touched many lives all over the Planet. In 1978, he reached a national and then international audience when he began talking about patient empowerment and the choice to live fully and die in peace. Read Bernie’s regular blog posts on his website where you will also find his books, articles, and CDs: http://www.berniesiegelmd.com. He is the Co-Academic Director of the Integrative Health and Healing M.A. Program at The Graduate Institute, Bethany, CT Bernie currently holds a cancer support group the second and fourth Tuesday afternoons of the month 1:30-3:30PM at Coachman’s Square at 21 Bradley Road, Woodbridge. If interested contact Lucille Ranciato: lranciato2@yahoo.com 203 288 2839; or Bernie: bugsyssiegel@sbcglobal.net. You can find Bernie’s books ad CDs at Wisdom of the Ages in Simsbury, Ct.
