LUXURY. FOR YOUR SOUL. When you’d rather hide beneath your duvet just a week longer, I’m the soul-sister who’s going to help you get back up and sashay down life's runway again. I'm Juliette Taylor-De Vries, and my “official” title is transformational coach. And, what I really do is pinpoint your blocks, shatter them, and keep you highly focused toward your goals. I

s it me or does it seem like time is speeding up? I don’t about you, but I feel like the summer is just flying by and I’m scrambling to get everything accomplished. Does this sound like your life? The alarm clock goes off, you hit the snooze button several times leaving just enough time to grab a quick shower and breakfast – well, that’s optional. You rush to the office, work hard all day, rush to get the kids from one sport to the next and come home exhausted. Dinner is whatever is quick and easy and you get ready to start the cycle all over again tomorrow. Are you wondering how long you can keep it up? Do you have a dream for your life to be different but can’t imagine how it’s possible? It is possible and it starts with setting an intention every day even for the simple things you need to accomplish in your life. When you set an intention you make it clear to yourself and others exactly what you plan to do. With intention, the Universe will bring what you want into alignment with your life. I can recall times when I had a specific intention and times when I didn’t have any intentions or I wasn’t clear on my intentions (like now!) and my life was visibly different during each. I remember having a clear intention for finishing my dissertation and the steps I needed to take each day to get there. My life flowed so easily and even though there were a few bumps along the way, every day moved me closer until I accomplished my goal. On the other hand, during the times in my life when I wasn’t setting intentions, it seemed I just drifted from one thing to the next and had a really hard time accomplishing much of anything. Try starting each day by setting an intention for the day. You can even set intentions for different aspects of your life – one for your work, one for your relationship with your family, one for your body. You may want to set an intention to go to bed thirty minutes earlier so that you can wake up a little earlier to meditate or just enjoy some quiet time. How about setting an intention to be mindful before each meal to make healthier choices and only eat when you are hungry? It may help to place a sign somewhere in your home that reminds you to set an intention each day. It can also be helpful to choose the times of day that will prompt you to set your intention. Setting an intention is the first step in moving you closer to having a more fulfilled life, maybe even your dream life. Try it for 30 days and see what amazing things can happen. If nothing else, you will at least break the cycle of feeling stressed out and running from one thing to the next. By setting your intention each day, you will have more control over what you choose to do on a daily basis even in a jam packed day. And at the end of the day you can relax knowing that tomorrow you will set a new intention to have another amazing day.

Nutmeg “Nuggets” Access Consciousness Bars® and Children

W

ould you like to help your child have more ease socially, improve their study habits, sleep, coping abilities, manage stress levels or develop a deeper connection with their

body?

Access Bars® is a gentle, hands-on body process run on the head that can create ease, peace and a sense of wellbeing similar to a massage or meditation. The Bars is practiced in over 120 countries as a gentle therapy that empowers the client to know that they can choose something different. The Bars releases tension, stress, worries, aids in concentration for studies and assists hugely if done before a test or exam. After having their Bars run, many children are much happier, feel better and do better in school and at home. They tend to sleep sounder, relate better with peers, get in less trouble and have fewer tantrums and outbursts. Times that used to be difficult, such as mornings, evenings, homework or chores, typically lose their charge and are much calmer. Parents have also found that the Bars can help children who have ADD, ADHD or autism, suffer from anxiety or depression, lack self- esteem, are moody or misbehave or have experienced emotional or physical trauma. What if it didn’t take much to totally transform your child’s experiences with life? Parents are using the Bars to assist their children in having more fun and ease and less stress and heartache in all areas of their lives. What contribution could the Bars be to your family?

Dr. Marvin Schweitzer

hat does it mean to you to get a good night’s rest? A healthy night’s sleep goes beyond just how long you sleep for or how well you sleep, but rather what you are sleeping on and are surrounded by. From mattresses to home decor, The Clean Bedroom has you covered with what you need to get the healthy night’s sleep you deserve.

r. Marvin Schweitzer, a naturopathic doctor of the Wellness Institute in Norwalk, Connecticut, can be known as the doctor who does it all. W

The Clean Bedroom, located in Greenwich, Connecticut, specializes in selling sustainable, all-natural bedroom furniture and organic bedding. Why do they do this? Regular bedding, the mattresses you sleep on for more than one third of your life, can contain Boric Acid, Antimony, Decabromodiphenyl Oxide and Formaldehyde. These chemicals can seep into your skin without you knowing. Stain resisting chemicals on comforters or sheets can often be inhaled while you are sleeping. Over time, this has harmful effects on your body. The Clean Bedroom sells mattresses that contain no chemicals, yet still provide your body with comfortable support that gives you the sleep you deserve. The mattresses are made from all-natural products, such as wool, cotton, natural rubber, and vegetable derivatives. With brands like Naturally Organic , OMI Mattresses, and Green Sleep, For mattresses only, The Clean Bedroom ships to you, wherever you are located, for just $99. However, the Clean Bedroom extends beyond just organic mattresses. Your bathroom is full of chemicals, due to cleaning products or the cosmetics you use daily. The Clean Bedroom helps you keep your bathroom clean, by providing you with products such as organic towels, bathrobes, and all-natural bath products. The Clean Bedroom helps focus on making the place you sleep and live in as clean and healthy for your body as possible. Therefore, they provide HEPA air purifiers to help get the air you breathe in to be pure, clean, and fresh. These purifiers not only prevent allergies, but also provide long lasting health benefits to your immune system. For more information about The Clean Bedroom, its Connecticut showroom, and the other products sold, call the showroom directly at 203-292-9275 Monday-Saturday 10AM-6PM or Sunday 12PM5PM. Receiving his Doctorate of Naturopathic medicine at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine (NCNM) in Portland, Oregon, Schweitzer took his research elsewhere. He completed many of his trainings for therapies in Europe, including his training for Oxygen Multi-Step Therapy with Immunostimulation Professor Manfred von Ardenne, a well-known therapist in Eastern Germany. For over thirty years, Schweitzer has been helping patients of the Fairfield county at the Wellness Institute. Transform Your Health

N

aturopathic medicine treats disease by addressing the underlying cause. How many times have you been to a doctor and been prescribed a medication – one that provided a temporary fix for your symptoms but did nothing to heal the deeper problem at their root? Naturopathic medicine heals by treating the root causes of symptoms, and the imbalances that lead to recurrent or chronic illness. Dr. Debra Gibson is a naturopathic doctor with more than 25 years of success in providing insightful natural medicine solutions for a wide range of health issues and for people of all ages. After completing undergraduate premedical studies at The Johns Hopkins University, she attended National College in Portland, Oregon, where she earned a doctor of naturopathic medicine degree (N.D.). Dr. Gibson’s office is located in Ridgefield, Connecticut. Her practice, A Center of Excellence for Therapeutic Lifestyle Change, supports patients committed to resolving issues standing between them and a fit, healthy body, a more peaceful mind, and greater wholeness of spirit. Taking a wellness-oriented, functional medicinal approach to healing has always made sense to Dr. Gibson: “Viewing a person from the perspective of wellness rather than from a disease-oriented perspective is both effective and life-enhancing. Looking at how a very healthy person’s body works best – and then creating a plan to get there, is a radically different approach from that experienced by most people in our current culture of medical care.“Are you ready to partner for healthy change? Ragweed: The Anguish of August By Anne Mitchell, ND

R

agweed grows along the country roads of Connecticut, flourishing in the August heat along with its companion goldenrod. Ragweed has that mess of reddish flowers at the top while goldenrod has those gracefully arched bunch of yellow flowers four or five feet up a thin stalk. They both make pollen, lots and lots of pollen. One ragweed plant can make a million grains of pollen into the air in one day, and billions over the life of the plant. If you think you’re safe because there are no plants in sight, you’re not. Those pollen grains can fly halfway across the state on a windy day. If you’re allergic to the pollen it makes you sneeze, sniff, cough and create lots of mucus to protect yourself. Itchy eyes. Itchy nose. Itchy mouth. Just to make the experience even more miserable, most sufferers have insomnia, too. Ragweed allergies can be so severe that they produce mood swings, mental and physical fatigue, and depression. At best, people who suffer from ragweed allergies are tired and miserable. Goldenrod pollen doesn’t spread as far. The pollen is too heavy and sticky to blow in the wind but it is also allergenic and can cause congestion too. Curly dock, lamb’s quarters, pigweed, and sheep sorrel as well as other Compositae family plants such as sage, burweed, marsh elder and rabbit brush, mugworts, groundsel bush and eupatorium bloom and pollinate at the end of summer, too. The plants that make pollen distributed by the wind cause many more problems than the insect pollinated plants. With this erratic weather, you can experience mold sensitivities all summer and fall, too. “Ragweed” includes about 15 different plants, all botanically related to sunflowers. If you react to ragweed you should consider avoiding bananas, sunflower seeds, and members of the gourd family including melons, zucchini, watermelon, honeydew, cantaloupe, and cucumbers because of cross-reactions, especially with throat and mouth symptoms. Some people expand this list to include apples, pears, cherry, carrot, hazelnut, kiwi and almonds. Also, don’t drink chamomile tea or take Echinacea because these can cross-react, too. Some of the allergenic components in these foods,

12

Natural Nutmeg - August 2015

like the lectins, are neutralized by cooking, so try eating these foods cooked instead of raw during ragweed season. You make the call. If you don’t have problems when you eat these foods, you don’t have to be so careful – but it’s possible that avoiding the entire list may help all of your symptoms. You can help yourself by staying indoors from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m., the time when ragweed plants release the greatest amount of pollen – and keep the doors and windows shut. Take an herbal formula of nettles and eyebright. Quercetin, a bioflavonoid can help too. Wear a mask outdoors. Use the air conditioning when you’re driving. Take a shower and change your clothes when you come indoors. There is another way to effectively eliminate ragweed reactions as well as most food and environmental allergies and sensitivities. At Advanced Allergy Relief of Connecticut, we use a special technique called Advanced Allergy Therapeutics (AAT). AAT is a breakthrough technology that eliminates the reactions from most forms of allergies and sensitivities. Rather than simply addressing the symptoms, AAT treats the problem at its source by retraining the body so that it no longer reacts inappropriately to a harmless substance. Yes, despite the misery that ragweed causes, it is a harmless substance. The problem is that your body over-reacts to it. AAT consists of gentle stimulation along the spine while you are exposed to a specific digital signal of the allergen. The treatment is completely painless and non-invasive. In fact, it feels good. With treatment the body alters its perception and corrects its own erroneous response, usually within 24 hours. The body then perceives the allergen as beneficial and useful, and in the case of food, for example, helpful and nourishing. Imagine eliminating your allergic reactions to ragweed in just a few treatments! AAT merges 21st century technology, knowledge of human physiology, and an in-depth knowledge of allergens with 3,000 year old Traditional Chinese Medicine to offer an effective alternative in the treatment of allergies and sensitivities.

With more than 35 years of experience in alternative medicine, Dr. Mitchell is a skilled diagnostician and blends many therapies. She is a cranialsacral practitioner and master of many body work techniques, and an acupuncturist in addition to her comprehensive knowledge of naturopathic medicine, nutrition, homeopathy, and botanical medicine. She works with people who have chronic illness, confused immune systems and inflammation, or who have experienced physical or emotional trauma, as well as those who have not achieved their goals with other therapies. She considers it privilege to work with children and babies. She is proficient in Advanced Allergy Technique (AAT) and Dr. Nambruidipad’s NAET to desensitize allergic responses. See ad on page 15.

Homeopathy - A Safe, Effective, Non-Toxic Way to Help Your Child’s Mental Health Challenges By Louise Sanchione, CCH, ND

H

ere in Connecticut we are very much aware of the mental health challenges our children are experiencing given the increased diagnoses of ADHD and Autism and the appointment of special commissions and committees to investigate children’s mental health issues after the tragedy in Sandy Hook. A recent study of a survey published by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (“Treatment of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder among Children with Special Health Care Needs, Visser, et. al., 2015), revealed that of children 4-17 years of age, about 4 in 10 with ADHD were treated with medication alone. And of that group almost 1 in 4 preschoolers were treated with medication alone. This despite the fact that CDC Principal Director IIeana Arias, Ph.D. states, “We do not know what the long-term effects of psychotropic medication are on the developing brains and bodies of little kids,” and recommends that behavioral therapy is the safest ADHD treatment for children under 6. Parents want to help their children who have emotional and behavioral challenges in a non-harmful way. However, this need is not being fully met by conventional medicine. On the contrary, there is an alarming increase in prescription medication with harmful side effects. Prescription medications for conditions such as ADHD, childhood depression, and anxiety have not been tested on children. The prescriber often has to change dosages and/or type of medication because it is ineffective or the patient is experiencing harmful side effects. Common side effects are tics, insomnia, loss of appetite and stunted growth and in rare cases psychotic breaks. This scenario leads to another medication for the side effect; return trips to the office, increasing parental frustration and a sad, uncomfortable child who starts feeling like there is something really wrong with him or her. Homeopathy is one of many alternative, natural choices in mental healthcare parents have if they want to try a safer, non-toxic approach. Homeopathy is a 200 year old system that has been extensively researched and is used worldwide by millions of people. It stimulates the body’s ability to heal itself non-toxically and naturally. Unlike prescription medications that suppress the symptoms which return when the medication is stopped, homeopathy works with the individual’s ability to heal itself and resolve the symptoms. Homeopathy treats the child, not the child’s diagnosis. It is highly individualized and addresses each child’s particular symptoms and unique characteristics. For example, three 7-year old girls with 14

severe anxiety will not be given the same homeopathic remedy nor would three 12-year old boys with a diagnosis of ADHD. If you are a parent and considering homeopathy for your child you might fall into one of these categories: parents who want to start out naturally and are seeking an effective, proven option; parents whose child is on medication but is experiencing harmful side effects and want to change to a natural approach, or parents whose child is on medication which is working but don’t want to continue long term use of prescription medication. It is also important to know that you can start homeopathic treatment if your child is taking prescription medication. There are no known or suspected contraindications or drug interactions. In the preface to the book, Ritalin Free Kids by Drs. Judyth Reichenberg-Ullman and Robert Ullman, Edward H. Chapman, MD, DHt, former President of the American Institute of Homeopathy, and clinical Instructor at the Harvard University School of Medicine writes, “For those who need support in their struggle with ADHD…..they can be assured from two hundred years’ experience using homeopathic medicine that they are safe. Your conventional doctor may be skeptical if you choose to use homeopathy. Don’t let that stop you...seek assistance from well-trained homeopathic providers who are willing to work with you and your doctors.” In Connecticut, almost all naturopathic medical doctors (NDs) use homeopathy and some specialize in it. Medical doctors who are licensed homeopathic doctors (MD, DHt) also practice homeopathy but there are only several of them in the State. Highly trained, nationally Certified Classical Homeopaths (CCH) can practice homeopathy in MA, RI and NY but not CT. If you would like to see more access to highly trained homeopaths in CT, please let your State Senator and Representative and members of the Public Health Committee know. Louise Sanchione is a CCH, ND and a former Special Education Teacher and Consultant. She is the Director of the CT Alliance to Advance Homeopathy. The mission is to raise the public’s understanding and use of homeopathy. Please contact her if you think that homeopathy might be able to help your child’s challenges and you need help in deciding if homeopathy is a right choice in health care for you. Mercury, Fish, & ADHD The Whole Story By Craig Fasullo, ND

A

nyone paying attention to pediatric medicine over the past decade has noticed the dramatic increase in the incidence of attention and hyperactivity disorders in our children. There are no shortage of theories regarding why this is the case, ranging from environmental exposures to nutritional deficiencies. In all likelihood, the cause will not be pinned down to a single etiology, but is probably multifactoral in nature. However each child’s case is a little different. As with many health conditions, some of these causes will be modifiable and within our control, while others will not. To this regard, there is a fascinating study examining the relationship between a mother’s fish consumption during pregnancy, how that consumption affects prenatal mercury levels, and the related incidence of later development of ADHD-type symptoms in her child. At first take, the results are somewhat confounding. On one hand, elevated fetal exposure to mercury, through increased maternal fish consumption, was linked to increased impulsivity/hyperactivity behaviors later in life. This was shown to be true even with relatively low levels of mercury exposure, far below those regulated by the FDA. However, the study also found that a mother’s intake of two or more servings of fish per week led to a reduced instance of ADHD symptoms in her child. These two conclusions seem contradictory, but on deeper consideration we can see that the truth is just a bit more complicated. It is certainly true that more and more research is identifying the neuro-protective elements of fish, at least partially due to its high omega-3 fatty acid content. These omega-3 fats provide docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which is necessary in the healthy growth and function of nervous tissue, including the brain. So we are able to draw the simple conclusion that more fish in pregnancy equals higher levels of omega-3 fats in circulation, which equals better brain development in the child. That is, until you take mercury into account.

Natural Nutmeg - August 2015

As a result of our industrial practices, mercury has contaminated the oceans. The primary sources of mercury into our waterways are coal combustion and the refinement of precious metals, such as gold. It is present in very small quantities in the seawater itself, but as it makes its way up the food chain, from algae to smaller fish to larger fish, the quantity of mercury is exponentially magnified. It is found in the highest amounts in large predatory fish such as shark, swordfish, and tuna. Through mother’s consumption of these fish, this accumulated toxic metal is transferred in measurable quantities to the unborn child, and its presence is highly detrimental to the developing human brain. The cognitive and behavioral assessments of the children in this study were done at eight years old, suggesting the very significant long-term impact of the choices made during pregnancy. So how do we make sense of this information? Should a pregnant mother eat fish or avoid it? In the end, it comes down to making smart, informed decisions about what fish to eat, and how often to eat it. Generally speaking, smaller fish like sardines and wild salmon are the best, while larger fish like Chilean sea bass and swordfish are to be avoided. Since the most commonly consumed fish in America is canned tuna, it is worthwhile to specifically mention the differences between what is available at the grocery store. Albacore tuna, known for its white flaky consistency, has by far the highest concentration of mercury. It should be totally avoided in pregnancy. A better choice is chunk light tuna (usually a species called skipjack), which has on -average less than half of the accumulated mercury. Still, it is best to limit any tuna to once per week. A far better option is canned salmon, which contains more omega-3 fatty acids and less mercury than any of the tuna species. The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is an excellent resource for this information. Their website contains an up-to-date list of the mercury levels found in different seafood options. You can even print out their wallet sized information card, and have it with you next time you are at the store shopping for a fish dinner.

Additionally, supplementing during pregnancy with a high quality fish oil that has been thoroughly tested for heavy metals is an excellent way to ensure you are getting optimal levels of the omega-3 oils that your developing child needs. Along with a prenatal multivitamin, think of it as the best insurance policy in town. If you are pregnant, or thinking of becoming pregnant, feel free to contact us at the clinic for additional support in making the best choices for your baby. Remember that seemingly small daily decisions made during those critical months can impact your child’s life forever. Natural Remedies for Babies and Children: Where’s the User Manual?

H

aving a user manual sure would make raising kids easy, except that every individual is different. Therefore every healthcare decision may also be different. Even in the same family, nothing applies to all children, all the time. Where standard medicine is concerned, this makes decisions for parents more difficult. What is referred to as the “Gold Standard” in medicine is set up based on the idea that every one of us is exactly alike. Research is done on a base of humans and the results are taken and used as the standard of care, until something proves the standard as not consistent with many humans after all. Still a gold standard once set is difficult to discard even if it isn’t as effective as research first indicated. Often it isn’t until adverse effects show up in the general public that a “gold standard” will be discarded. Gold standards as you might guess, are not always right, not always fitting of every individual, and many times driven by some big business entity with a profit in the mix. Take for instance mothers nursing their infants as documented in the history of breastfeeding on the National Institute of Health (NIH) web site: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/ PMC2684040/

trends of formula-fed children developing atopy, diabetes mellitus, and childhood obesity (Gaynor, 2003; Wolf, 2003). The detrimental effects of formula on children’s health, supporting Des-Essartz’s claim that breastmilk is superior for infant feeding, have initiated a “Breastfeeding versus Formula-Feeding Era.”

Then: As formulas evolved and research supported their efficacy, manufacturers began to advertise directly to physicians. By 1929, the American Medical Association (AMA) formed the Committee on Foods to approve the safety and quality of formula composition, forcing many infant food companies to seek AMA approval or the organization’s “Seal of Acceptance.” Three years later, advertising became regulated so that manufacturers could not solicit information to nonmedical personnel, which facilitated a positive relationship between physicians and the formula companies. By the 1940s and 1950s, physicians and consumers regarded the use of formula as a well-known, popular, and safe substitute for breastmilk. Consequently, breastfeeding experienced a steady decline until the 1970s (Fomon, 2001).

In this month and next month’s Natural Nutmeg we are going to share some information about treatment options and ideas from Pediatric APRN Lara O’Neil and Naturopathic Doctors Summer McAllister, and Ann Aresco of ProNatural Physicians Group in Kensington CT. Children are as individual in their healthcare needs as adults, and there is never one answer for every condition in every child.

Eventually the companies that make infant formulas were allowed to market to the general public for massive exposure to pregnant and nursing mothers. Now: Currently, many believe the development and advertisement of infant formula has once again negatively impacted the practice of breastfeeding. Although the breastfeeding rate was 90% in the 20th century, it has decreased to approximately 42% in the 21st century (Gaynor, 2003; Wright, 2007). Research shows increasing 20

Natural Nutmeg - August 2015

You will note that you never see formula advertisements on TV any longer. Formulas continue to be easy to access for those who need them. Moms are likely not told that the formulas are not the best choice for the infant’s health. They are certainly not told that it could lead to atopy, food allergies and sensitivities, diabetes, and childhood obesity as documented by the NIH. Moms have to seek that information themselves. Lesson to Learn: seek guidance from the experienced professionals, not just one source, before making decisions that are going to affect you and your child. Making informed choices for each individual is the best way to have a full complement of ideas and options for each child.

Knowing what works, and what doesn’t work for your child is the key to being able to successfully treat them with home remedies, and to knowing when to get medical care. It’s a balance that parents need to figure out for each of their children. Let’s discuss some of the most common childhood health issues and the natural remedies. Fever Fever is a big concern for many parents and children can withstand higher fever temperatures than adults. Fever is the body’s immune system response to correct infection. With a virus the temperature will usually be low and not require treatment. If the fever is higher but stable and the child isn’t showing signs of being very ill, the body will use the fever to fight the infection and eradicate it naturally without any further symptoms. If, however, the fever is too high, or you know the child has seizures with fevers then it should be addressed more aggressively.

Here are some signs to watch for and reasons to seek medical care: • If your child is under one month old with a fever • A high (above 103.5) or persistent fever (more than 3 days) for any age • If the breathing seems fast, labored or with unusual noises • If they have persistent pain in ears, throat, head or stomach • Persistent vomiting and diarrhea, if they become lethargic or are not urinating at least twice a day • Blood in vomit or diarrhea • Stiff neck, extreme headache, or extreme lack of energy • If your child is ill and has been exposed to a contagious disease or has traveled out of the country recently. The point here is that if you know your child’s health and can let the immune system take care of a minor issue with some home remedies you don’t need to hurry off to the doctor with every fever. You also don’t always need to suppress the fever with medicine when it has a job to do, unless the symptoms indicate that more action is required. But you should be aware at what point you need to seek more treatment for your child.

as soon as they able to keep down fluids, and are a good alternative to sports drinks which contain sugar and additives. Homeopathic Remedies Arsenicum album is the first remedy to think of with vomiting and diarrhea. Most kids are exhausted, but still restless and anxious. Kids get heartburn too. Vomiting is a strong indicator of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The goal of treatment in children with this condition is balance. Natural Treatments: Fennel, chamomile and lemon balm tea and/or ginger tea can help ease indigestion. Use Papaya enzymes for digestive support. Try eliminating common food allergens: wheat, dairy and soy. If the stomachaches are recurring, keep a food diary to help identify the cause. For reflux pain related to heartburn, sip on apple cider vinegar mixed with water. A good quality multistrain probiotic supplement taken daily can help restore healthy gut bacteria and improve symptoms. Homeopathic phosphorus is good for kids who vomit easily and complain of burning stomach after cold drinks.

Natural Treatments: When the fever is safe and medical attention is not needed, some important home remedies should be considered. Keep the child hydrated with plenty of water or old-fashioned bone broth soup, which will also provide important building blocks for the immune system. Taking plenty of vitamin D, calcium and vitamin C with bioflavonoids helps build the immune system.

Testing for food sensitivities can help to eliminate aggravating foods and help the digestion to correct itself. These are different from the anaphylactic type of food allergies and more difficult to identify.

Homeopathic Remedies: Homeopathy is always safe for kids and uses the body’s natural internal healing ability. It is most effective when directed by a skilled practitioner. Using the principle like cures like, remedies are matched with expressing symptoms to stimulate the body, rebalance and heal.

Allergies Besides antihistamines and nasal sprays, there are other ways you can help ease symptoms and reduce the inflammatory response. Local, raw (not pasteurized) honey has natural properties that help with allergy symptoms for children over 1 year. Yes it works! Vitamin C is a natural antihistamine and can be used in larger doses to help control the histamine release. Elimination of dairy from the diet will bring down some of the mucus production. Quercetin and stinging nettles herbal supplements work well for mild seasonal allergies as well as some homeopathic combination remedies.

Some of the best remedies for fevers: • Homeopathic Aconite napellus – use when the fever first manifests, especially if it appears after something extreme such as exposure to cold, a very windy day, or after a big emotional or physical shock. Also use if anxiety and restlessness are present. • Homeopathic Belladonna is a good remedy when the face is bright red and flushed. The head can be hot but the hands and feet could be cool. The child may complain of a headache and is often thirsty for cold water and may ask for lemonade or lemons in the water. • Homeopathic Ferrum phosphoricum is good for when a child is just starting to feel ill but the fever is not as intense. The cheeks have red patches with a pale complexion. The child could be a little restless but not anxious. Also use if the child is not as hungry, but still thirsty. • Homeopathic Pulsatilla pratensis is indicated when the child is clingy, very emotional and easily upset. He or she wants to be carried in fresh air and has no thirst with the fever. Stomachaches Stomachaches are one of the most common complaints from kids and can be caused by a variety of things. The stomach bug is the most common and is typically caused by a virus. Symptoms are usually diarrhea and vomiting, loss of appetite and stomach pains. The most important thing is to keep hydrated. Bone broths soups as well as coconut water are good to rehydrate your child

Remember: With persistent vomiting and diarrhea, if the child becomes lethargic or is not urinating at least twice a day, or if there is blood in the vomit or diarrhea, it’s time to go to your PCP.

Sinus rinsing/Neti pot is very beneficial to help prevent allergies turning into chronic infections. Use ¼ tsp sea salt with 1 cup distilled or boiled water cooled to room temperature. If infection is suspected add a silver solution, preferably water based, to help eliminate bacteria. Homeopathic Remedies: • Homeopathic Allium cepa is indicated for watery eyes with nasal discharge that irritates the nose and upper lip. Most times kids will feel better when in open air but worse in warm rooms. • Homeopathic Arsenicum album is a great remedy for burning of eyes, nose and throat, repeated sneezing when waking up and generalized restlessness and anxiety. Most kids feel better from warmth and hot drinks. • Homeopathic Euphrasia officinalis is good when the eyes are profusely tearing leaving the skin very tender with burning sensation and there’s also a non-irritating nasal discharge. • Homeopathic Natrum muriaticum is great for the headaches associated with allergies. Most kids will have chapped lips and cracks in the corners of the mouth and sneeze frequently.

If your child develops persistent thick yellow or green mucus from their nose, or eyes, is having difficulty breathing, cough is getting worse especially with a fever, call your PCP. Read about more children’s treatment options in the September issue of Natural Nutmeg. Many natural remedies can help treat conditions at home and prevent a trip to the doctors but safety is always the best policy for kids. Knowing when to go to your Primary care provider is just as important as treating conditions naturally. Submitted by Dr. Ann Aresco, Lara O’Neil APRN and Dr. Summer McAllister. Dr. Summer McAllister blends homeopathy with clinical nutrition, botanical medicine, detoxification, and acupuncture to address the root cause of illness. A Sports Lovers Paradise in South Lake Tahoe

B

oating, paddleboarding, kayaking, skiing, biking, hiking, ice skating and bar hopping... whatever your passion, Tahoe South (as the locals call it) does it right. All on the shore of the largest alpine lake in North America - Lake Tahoe offers ridiculously blue-green, crystal clear water surrounded by the majestic Sierra Nevada, jaw-dropping vistas, stately groves of pines, and ludicrously gorgeous sunsets. Why would you ever want to go anywhere else? And that’s pretty much what every transplant here said – once they moved here, they’d never go back. Our first stop was check-in at the 968 Park Hotel and what an amazing story this place has to tell. In order to create 968 Park Hotel as a completely “green” environment, they stripped the former structure to studs, and rebuilt the entire facility from the ground up, meeting every possible opportunity to use eco-friendly, sustainable materials and processes. Unbelievable! The list of sustainable initiatives they have is mind boggling, but here are a few that I thought were really unique:

• Walls and structural elements are built from reclaimed, aged Douglas Fir lumber and finished with natural patinas • Insulation is made from recycled blue jeans • Carpet is made from sustainable materials • Guest room furniture made from American Recycled Timber • Lobby furniture made from material recycled from the old pool fence • Linens are natural and free of dye and bleach • Cleaning products are natural and free of harmful chemicals • Trash cans are made from 100% recycled material • Spa deck is constructed of recycled plastic boards • Headboards, vanity, and bedside tables are constructed of recycled wood • Front desk is constructed of recycled wood

24

Natural Nutmeg - August 2015

They even have a recycled boxspring that they’ve converted into a couch in the lobby area and lights are hung in old Mason jars. They have a cool CoffeePub in the main lobby that offers finest local wines, craft beers, a cocktail or a cup of gourmet coffee. On Friday and Saturday evenings they have wine tastings and live acoustic music. And it’s within walking distance of the Heavenly Gondola, outdoor shopping and restaurants and casinos. Absolutely loved this place! The next day we headed to Lake Tahoe cruises for a sailing excursion aboard the Woodwind II. We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day to sail – beautiful sunshine, not a cloud in the sky and the best part…high winds. Woodwind II is a catamaran with twin hulls, a mast that is 64 feet high, and almost 80 feet above the water. She carries 1,500 square feet of sail, and is capable of sailing at over 20 knots – which we easily did! Once underway, with a cocktail in hand and Jimmy Buffet playing on their sound system – it was an incredible two hour excursion. I could have stayed on that boat all day! We ended the day at a lively new restaurant right in the center of the Heavenly village called Azul Latin Kitchen. According to the locals, it’s just what Tahoe South needed as Chef Marc uses the freshest local ingredients sourced from local farmer’s markets to make the latin-inspired dishes. The margaritas were excellent and made with all fresh squeezed juices. We tried the thai curry taco with malaysian-thai curry roasted chicken, candied jalapeños, pickled mango, and chopped cilantro; the beef and brussels taco with slow cooked beef, roasted tomato mole, brussel sprout slaw, roasted garlic tarragon aioli, queso fresco, and mexican sriracha; and the achiote coconut pork bowl with roasted achiote coconut pork, green rice, slow cooked egg, charred cauliflower salad, harissa, and chopped cilantro. Each dish was so flavorful and the spice was complemented nicely with sweetness. A must-try in South Lake Tahoe as there are few dining options that offer a true farm-to-table experience. Also check out Blue Angel Café for gluten-free dining. We ended our three days here with a stay at the new and luxurious Landing Resort and Spa. Commanding a prime waterfront location, all resort guestrooms feature stone fireplaces, and many offer spacious balconies with spectacular lake views. You won’t want to get out of the plush and unbelievably comfortable king-size bed with 300 thread count sateen linens, goose down pillows and comforters. However, you may have to in order to take advantage of the lavish bathroom with marble floors and double basin granite vanity, walk-in Euro rain shower and separate jetted soaking tub. Don’t worry if it gets cold as the temperature drops at night in Tahoe, the Landing Resort has thought of everything and has equipped your room with a heated bathroom floor and heated toilet seat.

Peace and Solitude at the Bentwood Inn

E

ager to start our first full day in Grand Teton National Park, we headed to Jenny Lake and took a short 5 minute boat trip across the lake to get to the Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point trailheads. Although these areas are two of the most beautiful parts of this park, you’ll have to battle the crowds to get there. It is quite a steep climb to Inspiration Point, but the view is totally worth it. We headed a little deeper into the Cascade Region hoping to spot some wildlife, but none were to be found today. However, with the amazing view of Grand Teton in all its majesty with every step you take, you can’t be disappointed if you don’t spot a moose or elk. The air is pristine, with scents of pine and juniper and the further you get into the canyon, the less people you’ll encounter on the trail. After a few hours of exploring we headed back to check-in to the Bentwood Inn which would be our home for the next couple of days. Driving down the short gravel road, we turned into the driveway to see the most beautiful log home I’ve ever seen. If you’re looking for peace, quiet and solitude, you’ve found it at the Bentwood Inn. Nested on three acres in a secluded grove of trees, it feels like you’re hundreds of miles away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Jackson. In reality, though, it’s only a few miles away. The Inn is also conveniently located six miles from the park. As soon as we walked in the door, it felt like we had entered our own private cabin in the woods with the smell of the wood burning fireplace and cookies baking in the oven. The innkeeper, Bob Schrader, told me that the Inn was constructed with massive 200-year old logs brought in from Yellowstone National Park after the great fire of 1988. There is over 6,000 square feet of luxurious space, including a 3-story river rock fireplace in the Great Room. We stayed in the Cabin Room which was an inviting second floor king room with a wooded view and sunrise-facing balcony and spacious bathroom with ecofriendly amenities. Snow shoes, a fishing creel, and painted writing desk sporting a local cutthroat trout adorn this large retreat into nature. Two upholstered chairs sit fireside, so you can warm up your toes and prepare to unwind in your private bath with jetted tub/shower. The tailored down-filled duvet folds back to reveal luxury linens and the promise of a peaceful night’s sleep. Around 5pm, we were delighted to see a wine and cheese plate put out for the guests. We sampled an amazing cheese with espresso and hints of lavender.

Natural Nutmeg - August 2015

Bob and Virginia Schrader are originally from South Florida, and after busy professional careers in law and hospitality, they relocated to a small town in New Hampshire to purchase and run a luxury inn and restaurant. Having since sold their inn, they recently started as innkeepers at the Bentwood Inn this past June. You would think Bob had extensive training in culinary school from the amazing breakfasts he made us. The first day we had homemade quiche with asiago, spinach, kale, mushroom and onion all locally sourced, and our second morning he served a smoked ham, swiss, mushroom and Dijon mustard crepe. Delicious! While Bob told us we could most likely see a moose or elk right in the backyard, we headed out early one morning to drive to another spot that he said we might be able to see bison or antelope. Not sure if it was luck or the Universe conspiring to make this a perfect trip – but as soon as we turned onto Antelope Flats Rd – we saw a huge herd of bison in the distance. We drove a little further and spotted an antelope grazing in the field about 200 yards from the road. Wanting to get a closer look at the bison, we circled back to where we saw them and now saw about ten other cars pulled off to the side of the road. The bison were now about 100 yards from the road and heading in the direction to cross it. We pulled over and watched as about 40 of them (3-4 calves included) meandered over to the road and walked right in between the cars! I bet we were less than 50 yards from them. Amazing! In addition to all of the wonderful things about this Inn, their ecofriendly initiatives are quite impressive as well. They recently received the Trip Advisor Greenleader Gold award. The following is a list of what has been implemented: • CFL lighting installed in all public areas of the property. • Composting of yard waste and non-recyclable cardboard initiated on-site. • All operations powered by 100% renewable energy purchased from Lower Valley Energy. • 2,000 feet of wire fencing removed from property for obstacle free wildlife movement. • Recycling system in place for glass, aluminum and all JH allowable recyclables. • Recognized as a "5 Star Business Leader" by the JH 'Reduce, Reuse and Recycle' Campaign.

• Natural and local product amenities can be found in all guest rooms (soaps, shampoos, salt scrub), packaged in compostable bottles. • Food purchases emphasize local and organic; supply lines with local vendors established. • BPA-free, Bentwood branded water bottles are provided as an amenity to our guests, eliminating plastic water bottle use. • Timer for on-demand hot water supply to reduce heat loss during off-peak hours. • Use of 100% biodegradable and 100% compostable garbage bags, reusable grocery and produce sacks. • Active business member of 1% For The Tetons, Sustainable Travel International and The International Ecotourism Society. • Enthusiastic supporter of local, national and international conservation programs, with financial and in-kind contributions made to organizations such as the International League of Conservation Photographers and the IUCN Tapir Research Group. In the fall and winter, Bob told me they will be offering many new packages for cross-country skiing and cycling. He’s even developing a hiking, biking and yoga retreat for guests of the property. The Bentwood Inn is a beautiful, peaceful and serene place to rest and relax after a busy day in Jackson or hiking in Grand Teton Park. And if you don’t get to spot that moose, just go to their Facebook page for a great video of a male and female courtship right in the backyard! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQunL0EKjH4. Visit www.bentwoodinn.com for more information.

While in Jackson, don’t miss dining at the Rendezvous Bistro, an American eatery which features creative interpretations of classic bistro fare. With an interesting craft cocktail list to choose from, we tried the Black Car, which incorporated Black Hennessey with cinnamon/orange bitters; and the Ginger Smash, which combined bourbon with ginger beer, mint and lime. Both were refreshing and delicious! The Bistro offers the only Raw Bar in town, serving fresh oysters on the halfshell, tuna tartare, and oyster shooters. The menu offered a plethora of small plate choices, which I love and it was hard to www.NaturalNutmeg.com

settle on just a few, but we opted for the Devils on Horseback (peppadew, almonds, gournay cheese, tasso ham and fig balsamic); the Toad in Hole Avocado (yard egg, baby heirlooms, asparagus, duck prosciutto, shaved parmesan and black truffle beurre blanc – delicious!); and the Seared Utah Trout with cauliflower-almond puree, grilled fava beans, asparagus, haricot vert, and orange-tarragon brown butter. The dish was amazing – a perfectly mild fish cooked to perfection. For more information, visit www.rendezvousbistro.net. The next night we happened upon The Rose, Jackson Hole’s first and only classically inspired cocktail lounge. With an emphasis on fresh and house made ingredients, quality spirits, and exacting standards of execution, The Rose has an expansive selection of classic and modern cocktails well-suited to every drinker’s interest. They are a sister bar to the more well-known speakeasy, Death & Co. in New York City. The décor reminded me of an old-time speakeasy lounge with velvet curtains and rich red leather booths. Our hosts Meagan and Erick were fantastic and very knowledgeable about the craft cocktail movement going on now in the U.S. They both have gone through some extensive training to master the art of cocktail making and their drink list showed it. We tried the Hurricane Pass and the Maximillian Affair which combined Milagro tequila with St. Germain elderflower liquor, punt e mes and lemon….sweet and savory! They even have special ice makers to create the perfect size cubes for your drink and often handchisel the ice themselves. The menu offered a wide variety of small plates (my favorite!) and the food was delicious. We sampled the Grilled Romaine with pecorino and white anchovy, the Braised eggs with grilled tomato and aioli and the Slow Roasted Ribs with sherry which were in-house smoked. Other great things to try are their Papas Bravas, Grilled Artichoke, Clams & Chorizo and Grilled Hangar Steak. They offer a great happy hour Tuesday through Saturday from 6:30pm to 8pm with $3 domestic beers and $4 draft beers, $5 wines and select cocktails and free appetizer bites with every drink ordered. What an awesome deal! A great spot not to be missed right in the heart of the town center. Visit www.therosejh.com for more information.

Bernie

By Bernie Siegel, MD

Communication From the Other Side

I

often like to advertise my lectures as about PMS. No not post menopausal syndrome but about the practical, mystical and spiritual aspects of life. I get lots of books sent to me for comment and received one the other day entitled, Postcards From Heaven by Dan Gordon about everyday messages of love from the other side. They are about many events which were signs to him of communication with loved ones who had died. One that touched me and reminded me of something my wife and I experienced was his writing about seeing a wild rabbit outside his sliding glass door and the rabbit just sat there looking at him. He went out to offer it food and it didn’t run away or eat. It just kept following him and watching him play with his kids in the yard. He felt a connection with it communicating from one of his family members who had died and it left only after he shared that with the rabbit. Several years ago one of my patients went to the Hawaiian Island of Kauai to resolve a lifetime of conflict with her mother before she died of cancer. I heard later that she died on the island. A couple of years later my wife Bobbie and I went there to lecture and lead a workshop. We went into a store and noticed a butterfly confused by a ceiling light and so my wife climbed up and placed her hand into the light. The butterfly came down on her hand and then stayed with us all day, that evening and the next afternoon when the workshop was finished when it flew up and away. When I say it stayed with us I mean it basically sat upon my wife’s shoulder or in her hand wherever we went. I remember saying to her when it was bed time, “Honey you can’t sleep with a butterfly.” “I’ll go out on the porch and brush it off.” She came back in and told me she had done so and I said, “Look at your other shoulder.” Yup, the butterfly had switched places and come back in with her. We finally offered it some sugar water to get it off her shoulder and we jumped into bed. It was quite a mystical experience and I truly felt it was my patients way of saying she had worked things out and goodbye.

Natural Nutmeg - August 2015

Many other things have happened to me which lead me to believe because of what I have experienced. I’ll share them some time in the future but they include having a near death experience as a child choking on a toy I aspirated; a past life experience which I envisioned spontaneously when a friend asked me why I was living this life and some mystics and healers telling me about the spirit people standing around me I couldn’t see but they could. Especially one night, years ago, in Madison when I felt like the talk I was giving was coming from somewhere else and I was being used to deliver it. A woman came up afterwards and said, “I’ve heard you before. That was better than usual. Standing in front of you for the whole lecture was a man and I drew his picture for you.” When she handed it to me it was exactly like the inner guide I visualized in my meditations. Same clothes beard and more. I still have it hanging on the wall. For many, Dr. Bernard Siegel-or Bernie, as he prefers to becalled-needs no introduction. He has touched many lives all overthe Planet. In 1978, he reached a national and then international audience when he began talking about patient empowerment and the choice to live fully and die in peace. As a physician who has cared for and counseled innumerable people whose mortality has been threatened by illness, Bernie embraces a philosophy of living and dying that stands at the forefront of the medical ethics and spiritual issues our Society grapples with today. Read Bernie’s regular blog posts on his website where you will also find his books, articles, and CDs: http://www.berniesiegelmd.com. Bernie currently holds a cancer support group the second and fourth Tuesday evenings of the month 6:30 to 8:30PM at Coachman’s Square at 21 Bradley Road, Woodbridge. If interested contact Lucille Ranciato: lranciato2@yahoo. com 203 288 2839; or Bernie: bugsyssiegel@sbcglobal.net. You can find Bernie’s books ad CDs at Wisdom of the Ages in Simsbury, Ct. WHY AN ORGANIC MATTRESS IS RIGHT FOR YOU

While we sleep, our immune system recovers and prepares for the day ahead. If your mattress is filled with airborne allergens and chemical toxins, your immune system will battle these rather than

repair itself. Regular bedding & mattresses are laden with polyurethane foam, toxic flame retardants, and water or stain resistant chemicals.

When we found out what was in our mattress, my husband said, ‘Every mother in the world should know what they are putting their child on at night.’ That was 2004, and the Clean Bedroom was born. —Chris Chamberlin, Co-founder
