H
ow many people are you an inspiration to? How many people admire and look up to you? You probably have no idea how many people are inspired by you, but on the days when you are frustrated, tired and discouraged, that’s what you need to remember. I often use this technique when I’m at the gym, especially in an exercise class. If I’m tired and sore and I really don’t feel like going deeper with my squats or jumping higher with my jacks, I’ll think to myself, “come on, you’re the athlete, you’re the inspiration.” And I’ll look around the room and think, “maybe if I’m working harder it will inspire one other person to work harder.” And it works! I find that little bit of extra energy I need to push harder. Being extraordinary is about being a role model, an example for others to encourage and motivate them to keep moving forward and never give up on reaching their dreams. It can become a way of life for you and really pull you up on those hard days when it seems nothing is going your way. This world needs more extraordinary people, especially now. There is so much doom and gloom in the media, in workplaces, everywhere you turn it seems. People are beaten down, anxious and fearful. There is an incredible need for people who radiate the light of positive energy amidst all of the negativity. I believe those people are being called, whether they realize it or not, to go out and set an example of how to live with purpose and passion. To shine light where there is darkness in families, communities and worldwide. Otherwise, the fear and negativity may have destructive implications for our planet. You can be extraordinary at your job, in your relationships, in your community, on your team or at your home. There are so many simple things you can do to lead an extraordinary life and be an extraordinary person. • Smile and say hello to every person you pass by • Hold the door for the next person as you enter or exit a building • Pay the toll fare for the car behind you on the highway • Pick up the phone and call someone instead of sending an email • Go the extra mile for your customer, remember their birthday • Cook a healthy meal for your family

“Fit to You” Analyzes Genetics to Create Personalized Nutrition Plans to Improve Health
F
it to You is approaching chronic medical conditions using nutrigenomics to create personalized programs to improve health. Nutrigenomics looks at a genome to develop a program to meet a client’s unique metabolic challenges. “Years ago genetic testing was very expensive and not very well understood,” said Jessica Pizano, owner of Fit to You. “Now anyone can order a saliva test online from 23andme.com for $99.” Programs are developed beginning with a health intake and genetic testing ordered through 23andme.com. “Once the results are available, I analyze the genome looking for genetic variations, called single nucleotide polymorphisms, which may impact your health. I then prepare a report for you and go through my findings and recommendations,” says Pizano. Counseling sessions then help clients regain their health using nutrition and supplementation to support their health and genetics. Analysis may benefit various conditions including depression/mood disorders, infertility/miscarriages, autoimmune disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, food allergies and sensitivities, and autism.

BERNIE
By Bernie Siegel, MD
Do What Will Make You Happy
W
hat we have to realize is that love and aggression are normal feelings but when combined they enhance life. What I mean is that unhealthy aggression is revealed every day in the newspapers. It is sickening to see all the violence and destructive behavior from shooting people to wars between differing nations, races and religions. What happens when love is combined with aggression is that the energy goes into constructive and not destructive behavior. That can be sports where opponents knock heads, tackle each other, bat and kick balls, shoot at targets or throw javelins. It can also be in our work as we hammer, dig up the earth, tear down or build up. Here the energy is being directed in a physical, aggressive manner that will enhance the earth by its end result. What good is violence? What has it ever fixed? Think of what Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. were able to do through non-violence, in contrast to how their lives ended. I always remember King’s words, “It’s a good thing Jesus told us to love one another and not like one another because there are some people I can’t like.” I learned what the ultimate solution to the world’s problem is through a personal incident. I sold a piece of farmland our family owned for generations to a man who was retiring and looking for a change in lifestyle. The summer after he purchased it he showed up at my house with a big metal box. He said, “I was plowing the field and hit something and I dug up this box. This belongs to you and your family.” He put it down and opened it. It was filled with valuable jewelry and gold pieces. I said, “No, you bought the farm. It’s yours.” “I bought the farm but this is not part of the farm. It’s your families’ and not mine.” Well we went on arguing and he walked out without it. Our conflict went on for weeks and finally I told him we needed to find someone to decide for us. He agreed. We went to a lawyer who told us to just donate it to some charity that we both decided would be appropriate. So we started arguing all over again. I wanted to help children and animals and he wanted to help the homeless and addicts and it got crazy. At this point the lawyer’s secretary came into the conference room we were sitting in. She said, “Excuse me but may I ask you two a question?” “Sure,” we both replied. “Do you both have children?” she asked. We both said yes. “Do you have a son?” she asked me. “Yes,” I said. “Do you have a daughter?” she asked the other man. “Yes,” he said. “Then tell them to get married and give them the treasure as a wedding gift.” We thanked her and went home and became one family with nothing to fight over. That is what the world needs to understand and accept. When we are one family there is nothing to fight over. Let me share one more event that taught me a lot. Many years ago a childhood friend of mine got into a difficult situation due to a gambling addiction. The organized crime group involved had threatened to break every bone in his body or worse if he did not pay up. 10
Natural Nutmeg - July/August 2014
He said when he revealed that he had no funds available he was told that if he married the crime lord’s daughter they would let him off. He said the offer was made because she was an ugly witch. The problem was that unbeknownst to the underworld characters involved, my friend was already married. He said he felt there was no hope and that his addiction would cost him his life. At this point I volunteered to marry the witch. He argued but I persisted and to make a long story short the marriage was arranged and a few weeks later the witch and I were wed. I did the best I could to put on a pleasant face for the evening but as it grew late I told my bride I needed to go to our hotel room and get some rest and she agreed to come with me. When we got to the room I went into the bathroom to catch my breath and try to figure out how I was going to manage to get through the night, let alone the years that lay ahead of us. After spending as much time as I could in hiding I stepped out of the bathroom to find a beautiful woman sitting on the edge of the bed. “Where’s my wife?” “It’s me. Now that you are my husband I can reveal that a spell was cast upon me. I am a beautiful woman for twelve hours and a witch for twelve hours. Now that you are my husband my schedule is your choice. I can be beautiful during the day and impress the neighbors or at night for your pleasure. Tell me what you would prefer.” I knew that there was only one correct answer, “Do what will make you happy.” “Thank you, you have freed me from the spell. I can be beautiful twenty-four hours a day now.” The point I am trying to make is that when you have to decide about what to do with your life do what will make you happy. Get out of your head and into your heart. We each have a right to a life of our own and not one that is imposed upon us by others, be they parents or spouses.

Collagen Infusion Treatment
A
s we get older, the trillions of cells in our body do too. And like us, they become less resilient and able to weather the stress of everyday life. Our skin especially tells the tale of what’s happening throughout our bodies. Collagen makes up approximately 30% of the proteins within the body. These are tough and strong structures found all over the body: in bones, tendons and ligaments. With age, collagen production slows and the cell’s structures weaken. The skin gets thinner and is easier to damage, hair gets lifeless, skin sags and wrinkles, tendons and ligaments become less elastic, and joints get stiff.
What does collagen do? Collagen helps give strength to various structures of the body and also protects structures like the skin by preventing absorption and spreading of pathogenic substances, environmental toxins, microorganisms and cancerous cells. Collagen protein is the cement that holds everything together. Collagen is also present in all the smooth muscle tissues, blood vessels, digestive tract, heart, gallbladder, kidneys and bladder holding the cells and tissues together. Collagen is even the major component of the hair and nails.
Where is collagen found? In nature, collagen is found exclusively in animals, especially in the flesh and connective tissues of mammals. Collagen is a part of the connective tissue that in the skin helps in firmness, suppleness and constant renewal of skin cells. Collagen is vital for skin elasticity. Ligaments are another type of connective tissue that attach two bones and consequently hold the joints together. Tendons are similar but are different types of tissues that attach the muscles to the bones. All of these tissues, the bones, ligaments, tendons and the skeletal muscles themselves, are made up of proteins. One of the most predominant proteins is collagen. Collagen is the main component of connective tissue, and is the most abundant protein in mammals, making up about 25% to 35% of the whole-body protein content.
What can we do about it? At Nova Spa we provide a non-surgical SAIAN Collagen Infusion Treatment. SAIAN, pure Collagen Elastin liquid is a unique formula that is a solution of water, marine collagen and elastin, pure and natural. This treatment produces instant dramatic results which are cumulative and long lasting. We also provide an Amino Sculpt Collagen supplement which has also shown positive results. SAIAN Pure Collagen Masks are made from freeze-dried collagen fibers, and are formulated to deliver dramatic and long-lasting results. These potent masks are used for superior moisturizing results that plump up the skin, and reduce the appearance of laugh lines, crow’s feet and expression lines. They deeply hydrate and moisturize the skin, as well as stimulate collagen production, and prevent dehydration.
Marine Collagen: known as the best source of collagen for human skin. Marine Collagen Silanetriol/Polypeptides is designed to stimulate Type III collagen deep down within the skin. The enhancement comes from a concentration of extrinsic native proteins from marine collagen which is known as the best source of collagen. With its polysaccharides, vitamins and essential sea minerals, it aids in the healing and structuring of connective tissue. Marine Elastin: helps maintain the suppleness, elasticity and proper nourishment of the skin. How soon can I expect to see noticeable results? Your skin will look different after the first treatment; smoother, more hydrated with a natural radiant sheen. Because the results commence from within the skin, the skin feels active, more alive, plump and tighter just after one treatment. The results are cumulative over time with repeated treatments. Do I need maintenance treatments? YES, maintenance treatments are important in order to maintain visible results. Usually a once a month treatment is recommended, unless otherwise determined by your skin care specialist. Is the Collagen treatment a good complement to other skin care treatments? YES, Micro-Current treatments (non-surgical facelift) are an excellent complement as this treatment helps stimulate collagen production from deep within the skin. Is the Collagen treatment for everyone? YES, everyone can benefit from SAIAN Infusion and Micro-Current treatments as they are safe and promote healthier skin and make you look good and feel better. Turning Down the Heat on Summer Workouts
By Jessica Pizano
A
s I write this article we are enjoying the first signs of spring in Connecticut, but in no time at all summer will be here. As we gear up for hot weather, it is important to remember that exercising in the warmer months requires adequate planning so that you can stay safe and enjoy your workouts. Regardless of whether you plan on hitting the gym or pounding the pavement, there are a few universal rules to follow.
trolyte replacers is coconut water. Compared to the leading sports drink, coconut water provides superior nutrition and hydration. The facts:
Proper Hydration
1 cup Coconut Water
1 Cup Sport Drink
Many of us live in homes that are not air conditioned. Even if you are exercising in an air conditioned gym, if you have spent the last few hours sweating it out at home you will need sufficient water before, during and after exercise to stay hydrated. The water you lose when you sweat must be replenished. Otherwise you may not feel well enough to finish your workout. If you’re involved in outdoor activities it is especially important to remember that a loss of more than 2% of body weight as sweat can impair performance during endurance activities. This occurs because our blood is comprised primarily of water. As we become dehydrated the actual volume of blood declines and this will cause an increase in heart rate to compensate for the lack of volume. Further, in an attempt to conserve fluids, the body will decrease sweating in order to conserve water reserves. This can lead to a dangerous increase in core temperature or even heat stroke. Drinking lots of fluids helps to alleviate strain on the cardiovascular system, improve performance, and decrease the likelihood of heat illnesses.

What and When to Drink The best bet is to drink throughout the day to prevent this from happening. Avoid caffeinated beverages such as coffee and colas; instead, reach for water, herbal teas, seltzer, or coconut water. The salads and fruits we crave during the summer months also add to our daily water intake. If you are sick of plain old water, try spicing it up with slices of fresh fruits such as orange, lemon, lime, or pineapple. Cucumber and mint or lemon and ginger also make refreshing flavored water. During exercise it is important to drink frequently to prevent dehydration and overheating. For most people, water is the best drink during exercise, however, for those exercising for more than an hour a sports drink may be required to replace electrolytes. Some people rely on heavily sweetened sports drinks full of sugar or artificial sugars. These drinks are full of chemicals and the sweetness can make people feel sick while they are exercising. One of my favorite elec12

One great way to estimate how much water you need to rehydrate from exercise is to weigh yourself before and after exercise. For every ounce of weight lost, you should rehydrate with an ounce of fluids. Once you have done this a few times you’ll know the average amount of fluid you need to rehydrate.
Wet Your Skin In very hot temperatures, wetting the skin is also a good way to prevent overheating. You can use cold water on a towel or from a spray bottle to help decrease water losses from sweat. Sweat’s primary purpose is to help to cool down the body through evaporation, but it does so at the expense of precious fluids. Using water on the skin helps to decrease sweat while still allowing the body to cool down. Just the feeling of the cool water is enough to give immediate psychological relief from the heat.
Too Much Water Recently, we have been hearing about cases of hyponatremia in marathon runners. Hyponatremia occurs when sodium levels in the blood become too low. This happens from drinking too much water and is often referred to as water intoxication. Sometimes this is a mild occurrence and will happen when sodium levels dip below 130 mmol/liter. This can cause symptoms including bloating, puffiness of hands and feet, nausea, vomiting, and headache.
In severe cases, sodium levels drop below 120 mmol/liter and can cause massive brain swelling that may cause seizures, coma, respiratory arrest, permanent brain damage or even death. Generally this only happens in endurance activities such as marathons and triathlons. It is often a result of drinking too much before, during and after the event and can be exacerbated by low body weight, improper training, high sweat sodium losses, use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and impaired kidney function. To help prevent hyponatremia, be sure to consume adequate sodium if you plan on performing endurance exercise in the heat, and replenish fluid and sodium losses with an electrolyte drink during the event. If you show signs of hyponatremia please seek immediate medical attention. Guidelines for fluid intake during exercise in hot weather include: • Drink plenty of fluids the day before exercising. Minimize caffeine intake and alcohol which may contribute to dehydration. • Slowly drink 0.08-0.11 ounces of water per pound of body weight at least four hours before exercising. If you will be exercising for more than an hour, choose a drink such as coconut water that includes some carbohydrate. • Use sodium in liquids or snacks to help stimulate your thirst and to help you retain fluids. • After exercising, if you are unable to urinate or if your urine is dark or highly concentrated, you should make it a priority to drink additional fluids prior to future workouts. It is important that urine be a clear pale yellow before exercising. • Consume adequate fluids during exercise. Thirst generally does not occur until about one to two percent of body weight has been lost. • Remember not to overhydrate which can increase the risk of hyponatremia.

Fueling Your Body Fueling your body with healthy food and sufficient calories is always necessary for a great workout session. Unfortunately, when we are overheated we often have a decreased appetite. Eating small meals more frequently can help ensure adequate intake. Focus on cooling foods such as cold salads and fruits; lighter protein sources including beans, nuts, eggs, poultry, and fish; and cold grain salads. These foods are much more appealing in the warmer months than the soups and hearty stews that keep us warm and full all winter long. Smoothies make great breakfasts and snacks that help to nourish, hydrate, and refresh. Blend fresh or frozen fruit; add nuts, seeds, protein powder, or yogurt for protein; and add water, green tea, or milk/milk substitute to make a delicious meal. For added nutrition try adding vegetables, including spinach, kale, cucumber, celery, beets, and/or carrots. Ginger and turmeric may be added for additional flavor and are natural anti-inflammatories. One of my favorite recipes is for a blueberry mango smoothie. Blueberry Mango Smoothie 1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries 1 cup fresh or frozen mango 2 celery stalks 1 cup baby spinach or kale 1 scoop natural protein powder 2 teaspoons flax oil 2 cups coconut milk 1 cup iced green tea
Eat Before Exercise It is incredibly important to eat before you exercise. If you are an early morning exerciser, try a piece of fruit or a small bowl of wholegrain cereal before you work out. For those who work out later in the day, have a meal a couple of hours prior to exercising, or at least a light snack an hour before your workout. While you do not want to weigh yourself down with excess calories before a workout (which may make you feel queasy), it is important to have sufficient fuel for your workout. Often, when we exercise without eating we can feel dizzy, light headed, lethargic, and sick. Combine this with dehydration and you can be in serious trouble. Carbohydrates are particularly useful prior to exercise. They are our primary fuel source and the body functions best when it has sufficient carbohydrate levels. It is best to consume nutrient packed carbohydrates including fruits, vegetables, and whole grains instead of the sugars found in cookies, cakes, candy, and 14

sodas. When temperatures rise, our muscles use more of our stored glycogen (storage form of carbohydrate in the body). When exercising at a high intensity for an hour or more it may be necessary to use a carbohydrate-electrolyte drink such as coconut water to fuel the workout. Some research has even shown that using adequate carbohydrate during intense, endurance exercise can help to maintain body temperature as effectively as water and can even improve performance. However, consuming too much carbohydrate during exercise can be uncomfortable. Look for a drink that supplies just a small amount of carbohydrate or you may begin to feel ill.
Dress for Success Dressing appropriately for the weather is important. Lightweight clothes that breathe are important, particularly if you are exercising outdoors. Choose dry wick materials to help move moisture away from the skin. Light-colored materials reflect the sunlight, while dark colors absorb the sun’s heat and contribute to overheating. Using sunscreen on areas of the body exposed to the sun is important to prevent sunburn and decrease the risk of skin cancer. Choose a higher SPF formula that is sweat-resistant and reapply frequently if you are going to be outside for long periods of time. Remember to use sunscreen on the scalp if you have thin hair or have a part. I can attest to a few nasty sunburns on my part. They are quite painful (particularly in the shower!) and it is embarrassing when it peels.
more quickly. It is important to offer plenty of fluids and adequate breaks in shaded areas. Carefully monitor children to make sure they are not showing signs of heat-related illness. If the skin becomes pale, very red, or they stop sweating it is important to stop exercising, move indoors, and seek medical attention if necessary. For team sports, it may be necessary to modify activities based on the weather. When is the Best Time to Exercise? Clients ask me all the time, “When is the best time to exercise?” Usually my answer is, “Whenever you will do it.” Generally, it doesn’t matter whether you fit in a morning run or strength-training session, prefer to work out at lunchtime, or work out in the evening. In hot weather, however, it is often best to work out early in the day before the temperature rises or wait until evening when temperatures cool off. This is less important if you are working out in an air conditioned environment than if you are exercising outside, or indoors without air conditioning. Remember that on particularly hot days it may be better to exercise in an air conditioned space, or reduce the length and/or intensity of your workout.

A School Your Children Will Really Love: Sustainable Farm School
L
ast week I came home to find “Schools Out” repetitively written out all over the chalkboard paint that is up my kitchen walls. The writing is reminiscent of the “I will not talk in class” punishment so many of us are familiar with from our early school days. The author of this self-inflicted expression of sadness about the ending of the school giving way to the lazy days of summer is my 13, going on 14 year-old, daughter. Yes, the age that when mentioned evokes looks of sympathy and shortness of breath in whomever you may be in conversation with. Instead of celebrating Alice Cooper’s famed “No more pencils. No more books. No more teacher’s dirty looks,” my daughter and her friends are counting the days until the summer program begins and they will be back to school. Although I’d love to say that this is all due to my exceptional parenting and that I have mastered the art of raising perfect children, I think the credit goes to the school she’s been fortunate enough to attend for the last three years. Sustainable Farm School is an independent, non-profit day school for children ages 3 to 18 that offers core academic, holistic personal development, and a model for sustainable living. The school’s mission is to help students and families of all backgrounds develop a deeper understanding of and practices for regenerative living through natural curiosity, rigorous academics, and critical thinking in real-world contexts. The unique approach focuses on teaching children to learn independently, be self-sufficient, and to collaborate with people of all ages and levels
of ability. The results are people prepared for a future of creative, effective, democratic, and sustainably-minded community members. These kids know how to grow food, they know what pesticides and GMOs are and how to avoid them, they know how to harvest the food they’ve grown, they know how to prepare that harvested food and how to clean up after it all. They know how to read laws and how to fight to change them. They know how to research and synthesize the information they gain with their personal experiences and form educated opinions and argue them. They know how to create art from trash and nature as well as more traditional mediums. They know how to form a community and how to support each other when they’re struggling and how to celebrate each other’s successes. And yes, they also know how to do math, grammar, history, foreign language and science. These kids are intelligent, caring, forward looking and happy. Since the school’s onset they have met in a variety of locations. Sometimes their classwork has taken place on a farm, sometimes at private residences including their master gardener’s home, sometimes at the Quaker Meeting House in West Hartford. Their educational journey has included finding the best place suited for the learning to occur. With the years behind them, the school has decided it’s time to find a home. Enter Al Gamble, CEO and founder of Locals 8 Restaurant Group; Plan B Burger Bar, Tisane and the Half Door. Part of the mission of the restaurant group is “To uphold a culture that sup

ports and is a part of our local community. We proudly embrace our responsibility to care for our environment through reducing waste, utilizing green energy, humane animal practices, encouraging local farming and generally reducing our carbon footprint.” Upon hearing about the school and their mission, Al wanted to offer support in educating our future on the importance of sustainability. “Children who know where their food is coming from and who can work together to protect and care for our environment are essential to our future. It is imperative that we all come together as a community to support programs such as these.” With that he has offered to sponsor the school for the upcoming school year and provide them a space to hold their classes as well as create their own organic farm. My daughter and her peers are thrilled to get planting and turn their new space into their own and the restaurant team is looking forward to learning from the students and teachers alike how they can improve their own sustainability practices. When multiple organizations can come together for a bigger shared cause, true community is formed. No wonder my daughter is so sad for school to be out.

Doctors Notes
Dr. Eric Kusher
Rebalancing the Female Hormone System with the 3 Body Systems Approach
S
ymptoms resulting from imbalances of female hormones can range from inconvenient to debilitating for women who suffer from them. In women of child-bearing age, signs and symptoms of imbalances in progesterone and estrogen, the two female hormones which choreograph their monthly dance within the female system, can include infertility, painful menstruation, PMS, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), cravings, mood swings, insomnia, and more. In peri-menopausal and post-menopausal women, symptoms may include hot flashes, night sweats, fatigue, mood swings, cravings, and ultimately, possible bone loss.
Problems with Synthetic Hormones For the past 40 years, doctors have prescribed synthetic estrogens and progesterones, designed to fill in the hormone production gap, with varying results, as well as the specter of unwanted side effects and increased risk of some cancers. (A similar scenario is currently coming to light in the practice of male testosterone replacement therapy for “Low-T”). The use of this type of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is quite imprecise, as the use of creams, gels, pellets, or oral medications does not offer accurate daily dosages, and in the case of topical products, exposes other family members to the effects of these drugs simply by touch transfer.
It Makes More Sense to Fix Imbalances From a purely philosophical perspective, and especially in those women still experiencing cycles, it makes far more sense to correct any imbalances in the body’s production and timing, rather than simply throwing additional hormones somewhat indiscriminately into the bloodstream. The hardware is still there and functioning…it’s really just a tweak of the software program to get the entire system back in balance and functioning as nature intended. So, let’s discuss for a moment the programming which controls this system, and see if we can offer sensible therapies to re-orchestrate the symphony of the female hormonal system. First, any imbalances of this system will fall into one or more of three distinct categories: 1. Distribution – in this type of imbalance there is adequate production of hormones, but the release of the hormones is not occurring at the proper times within the monthly cycle. Think of it as an orchestra…all the musicians show up with their instruments ready to play, but the conductor has had too many cocktails and his timing is way off. The resulting concert is something painful to the ear, as the hormonal cycle is distressful to the sufferer. 2. Production – here’s a situation in which there truly is either a shortage or an overabundance of hormones being produced, either

estrogen, progesterone, or both. In this example, the musicians show up, but their instruments will only play at half-volume (or double-volume)…the conductor may actually be sober this time! 3. Timing – in this case, hormonal production may or may not be normal, but something within the cycle is causing ovulation to occur either too early or too late. The orchestra is playing along, but the scheduled crescendo of the piece is played too early or too late. *Note: Many women show issues with more than one category, i.e., they may have problems with both production and timing.
Finding the Problem So, here’s the million-dollar question: How do we uncover the type of problem, and once found, how do we fix it? The answer is deceptively simple (if you’re trained in this sort of thing). It seems obvious that in a month-long cycle, you cannot base any findings or treatment on a single lab sample, as the levels change throughout the month. So the only sensible thing to do is test throughout the month! This is accomplished by using a month-long hormonal panel, which uses saliva samples and tests every other day throughout the cycle; it’s a test which patients can do in the comfort and privacy of their own homes. At the end of the test period, we have an accurate depiction of hormonal events throughout the cycle…this allows us to correct imbalances found at every point in the cycle. So, now we know exactly when to augment or reduce hormonal output…but what do we use to make this occur?
Functional Medicine Now, there’s a bit more to this story. Rarely does the female hormonal system get out of whack without an underlying reason. It is almost always a secondary result of imbalances within other systems, usually the adrenal hormonal system or the digestive system. Here’s where the basic tenets of Functional Medicine come into play; practitioners dig and continue digging until the foundational causes are uncovered and corrected. So, while you are seemingly seeking attention for a female problem, the true root causes of your end symptoms may lie elsewhere, which is why a worthy practitioner will address and treat issues found in any and all systems. In our practice every single therapeutic step we take is predicated on science-based lab tests which objectively illustrate imbalances, and we can re-test after treatment to insure results are real and measurable. Dr. Eric Kusher is a chiropractic physician practicing since 1983, specializing in Functional Medicine, and Post-Graduate Certified in Acupuncture and Applied Kinesiology. He is founder and practitioner at the Kusher Functional Medicine Center in Enfield, CT, and may be reached at (800)-735-2281. See ad on page 19.
Fixing the Problem In our practice, we use a combination of plant-based bioidentical hormonal products in extremely tiny dosages and datedependent. Our focus is not to replace what the body is failing to produce, but rather to affect the biological feedback loops responsible for production, thereby prodding the body to begin regulation of its own production. Causes are discovered and addressed, natural cycles once again take over, and symptoms abate.

Conscious Investing: Doing Well by Doing Good
By Lawrence Ford
I
f you’re reading this, chances are you are one of the many who are waking up and beginning to consider how your decisions affect not just you or your family but the world around you. You may be buying more organic food, shopping at green businesses, and supporting a range of worthy causes. But while you’re paying attention to the money you spend, do you know what the rest of your money is up to? The idea of conscious investing might make you think of oddball mutual funds or troubled solar companies. If so, it’s time to think a little more deeply. Only when you’re truly and fully conscious of your money– how you earn, spend, and invest it, and how it’s connected to the rest of the world–can you align it with the beliefs and priorities that guide the rest of your life.
Becoming Conscious What do I mean by consciousness? A dictionary would say something like “the state of being awake and able to understand what is happening around you.” That’s actually not too far off. Being truly awake and aware is the first step, and it’s a
big one. When we are fully conscious we inhabit and come to terms with the present, the moment, the all-important now. Great spiritual traditions agree that this is the only true reality. It may be challenging, but it’s the only place where we can experience our authentic selves. So far, so good. But a funny thing happens when we embrace the present. Touching the very core of our being, we realize that it’s not about us at all. It’s about everything. Everything in the universe is connected, undifferentiated, one. As a practicing shaman I’m blessed to have this infinite view often, by leaving the five senses and shifting to another kind of perception. But most people have barely glimpsed this reality. Whether they get there intentionally through meditation, or by chance in a moment of inspiration, it can be unsettling–so the conscious mind might reason it away as something crazy or ignore it altogether. Believe it or not, your money works in much the same way, at least in some respects. Sure, it’s just something humans have made up, not part of the universe’s life force. But here on this planet it’s a powerful force nonetheless. It’s as much a part of you

as anything else in this material world. And most of us are barely aware of how it connects us to everyone and everything else.
Financial Enlightenment The first big step in conscious investing is simply to be aware of where we’re putting our money. That may sound obvious, but many of us don’t really know. Some people invest based on simple pie charts, or calculators from financial providers, or recommendations from friends or family. Others use formal models of riskbased asset allocation and diversification provided by a financial advisor. Regardless of the method, our money gets lumped in with billions of other dollars, then scattered throughout the global economy.
“Why is My Money Trashing the Environment?” Fully appreciating how our money touches everything, everywhere, is a lot like the more familiar kind of enlightenment. Once we become aware, everything looks and feels a little different. You might find yourself asking, “Why is my money trashing the planet’s environments, polluting our food, and altering our climate? Why is it subsidizing corporations where executives rule by fear and greed, and take home 400 times the pay of average employees? And on the flip side, what is my money doing to support sustainable practices, human development, American jobs, and all the other things I care about?” The final realization is the sudden understanding of what a big deal this is. Choosing organic, fair-trade coffee this morning was a conscious investment of two or three dollars. How much bigger is your retirement fund?
Doing Well, Doing Good Chances are that I’m preaching to the choir here. You get it. But if you’re not a financial professional, what can you do? Won’t investing in do-good, low-performing companies and mutual funds cost a lot more than that cup of coffee? The good news is that much has changed since early days of ethical investing. Back then you were lucky just to find a socially responsible fund or advisor. Handing over your money felt a bit like the collection plate–giving up some financial returns for the sake of feeling good about where your money goes. These days the good guys in both investment and business are much more numerous and prominent. Many are also outperforming their peers.

notch customer service, make consistent, substantial investments in their communities and the environment, and in some cases even pay more taxes. Yet a 15-year study of some of these firms demonstrated that they outperformed their peers by as much as 14 to one. It’s nothing new. Centuries ago, a tiny minority of Quakers in England and America created business empires based on “honesty, fair dealing, and quality products.” Their success, combined with a deep commitment to doing good in the world, gave them an impact on society, from slavery to poverty to mental health, that was enormous considering their numbers.
Join the Movement Today there’s even more good news: we’re not a tiny minority anymore, we’re a movement. Just as the organic and fair-trade movements have gone mainstream, people are becoming concerned about the impact of their money. Bank of America research found that 45% of investors considered investing as “a way to express my social, political and environmental values.” Just as many would accept higher risks to create greater positive impacts, and nearly twothirds would not invest in companies they consider harmful. Those numbers are even higher among women and younger people.
One Small Step Unfortunately, fewer of these conscientious folks have actually reviewed their investments, much less made changes. Moving from intention to action is as challenging in financial matters as in spiritual ones. Likewise, the path is made up of small, practical steps. Here are some that you can start taking right now: • Know the purpose of your money. It’s a lot easier than knowing your own purpose in life, and almost as important. What do you care about? If you could control the awesome power of capitalism (and you can, in part), which problems would you aim at? • Consider all your resources. For example, retirement savings accounts are often overlooked because they’re somehow considered special. To the universe, every dollar looks pretty much the same. • Invest accordingly. Find out what investments might meet your ethical and financial needs, keeping in mind that you don’t have to settle for one or the other. Do some research. Talk to a financial advisor. If you don’t like what you hear, find another one.
22
Natural Nutmeg - July/August 2014
• Divide and conquer. Break your finances down into purposebased “buckets.” You may have many priorities, and this is never an all-or-nothing proposition. • Start small. To avoid feeling overwhelmed or imprudent, start with just a small slice of your portfolio. See how your investments perform, and how they make you feel. Then dial it up as you get more comfortable. Keep in mind that there’s no ‘right’ way that works for everyone.
Have fun Investing is a fearful, stressful business for many people. There’s so much that could go wrong, and so little reassurance. Conscious investing should make you feel good about your impact on the world as an individual, about strengthening a growing movement, and about bringing your finances into line with the purpose of your life. It’s good for the planet and good for your soul. All you have to do is start putting your money where your heart is. PREVENTION
By Stacy J. Spiro, MD
Worry-Free, Hormone-Free, Reliable Contraception
I
see women in my office every day who tell me they want easy, worry-free, hormone-free, reliable contraception. With women who have completed their childbearing and want permanent, nonreversible contraception, I discuss the Essure procedure. Essure is the upgraded version of tying your tubes. It requires no incision, no hormones, no general anesthesia, and almost no downtime. In order to conceive a baby, the woman’s egg and man’s sperm must meet by traveling through the Fallopian tube. Permanent contraception is achieved by blocking the Fallopian tube and making it impenetrable to the egg or sperm. Various methods can be used to block the tubes, and this is how Essure differs from a traditional tubal ligation.
The Old Way A traditional tubal ligation (or tying your tubes) is accomplished by blocking the tube from the exterior of the tube. A surgeon makes an incision in the belly and inserts a camera into the abdominal cavity. S/he finds the Fallopian tube and occludes it either by burning, cutting and tying, or placing clips or rings around it. The incision in the belly is then closed with stiches. Because this type of surgery requires the surgeon to enter the abdominal cavity, general (or deep) anesthesia is necessary. It takes several days for the incisional pain to subside and several weeks for the incision to fully heal. Doctors often recommend avoiding heavy lifting and exercise for 4-6 weeks after this procedure. Although it’s often referred to as tying tubes, the tubes CANNOT be untied. It causes permanent damage to the tubes which cannot be reversed.
The Essure Way An Essure procedure also blocks the Fallopian tubes but from the INSIDE. By placing a camera (the size of a pencil) into the vagina, through the cervix and into the uterus, the interior of the Fallopian tube can be seen. A coil-like rod is then placed inside the Fallopian tubes. This coil stays in place and acts as scaffolding, encouraging tissue to grow into the tube’s passage area, thus blocking the tube. Because there are no incisions, burning or cutting, and the abdominal cavity is not entered, minimal anesthesia is required. The Essure procedure can be performed in an office setting with local anesthesia (numbing injection), non-narcotic pain medication, and mild sedation. Mild cramping may occur during the procedure and
persist for a few days, but resolves quickly with over-the-counter medication. Women can return to their normal activities the next day. For women who prefer to be asleep during the procedure, the Essure procedure can be performed at an outpatient surgical center or hospital. After the coils are placed, it takes about three months for the tissue growth to occur. During this time the woman needs to continue using contraception. After three months, a test called a hysterosalpingogram is performed to confirm the tubes are blocked. The hysterosalpingogram is performed at a radiology center. It consists of introducing dye into the uterine cavity via a small tube and taking an X-ray. If no dye is seen flowing through the Fallopian tube, that confirms the tubes are blocked and all other forms of contraception can be stopped! My patients sometimes express concern about having something in their body but I reassure them that the nickel-titanium metal in the Essure device has been used in many medical applications, such as heart valves and stents. It has a proven safety record. Other patients have hesitations because of a previous bad experience with an IUD. IUDs sit in the uterus though, not in the Fallopian tube and work entirely differently. The Essure device will not set off airport security and does not inhibit MRI exams. Menstrual periods are normal and are not affected by the procedure. Essure is not for everyone. If I have a patient with a severe nickel allergy, an allergy to X-ray contrast, or a history of previous uterine ablation, then I discuss other methods with her. Patients also should be over the age of 30 because studies have shown a high degree of regret in younger women who undergo permanent sterilization procedures. Every woman’s medical and reproductive history is unique, and different contraceptive methods offer different benefits or risks depending on that history. Essure IS for the patient who desires permanent, non-reversible contraception, without hormones, and virtually no downtime. My patients have been very pleased with the procedure. They are happy to return to their lives and relationships feeling confident and secure in their contraceptive choice. I encourage women to consider the Essure procedure when their families are complete. Submitted by Stacy J. Spiro, M.D., F.A.C.O.G. Healing Your Present by Exploring Your Past
“If you want to heal your body, you must first heal your mind” ~Plato.
P
lato said it over 2,360 years ago. I said it last week, you are reading it today. Does it ring true for you? Murphy’s Law is a great example of the power of thought. How many times have you broken a shoe lace or suffered some small inconvenience in the morning only to find by mid-day it became an avalanche that transformed into a tidal wave of unfortunate events by the end of the day? Poor Murphy did not create the phenomenon he is famous for…he simply noticed. What you think upon grows. Good or bad. Prosperity or Poverty. Pay attention to your thoughts and beliefs (a belief is simply a thought we keep thinking) and notice how the spaces and events of your day, week, or month fill in the blanks with either your upbeat Pollyanna thoughts or your dark and gloomy Eyore (think Winnie the Pooh character) thoughts. What you think upon grows…just pay attention. There are volumes of verifiable information covering the medical use of hypnosis; some dating back thousands of years ago as well as current research found at your local bookstore. The use of hypnosis for pain management, smoking cessation, dental work, and childbirth are some of the more common reasons hypnosis is used in the medical community. Using a professional certified in the area of hypnotherapy you are interested in is always recommended. Healing your present issues by exploring past lives may be more difficult for some to embrace. There are well known and well respected individuals who are strong proponents of past life regression as well as those who are strong opponents. This is the joy of living in our current age and technological state. You can find evidence on any topic to prove or disprove as you wish. The most verifiable “proof” may be personal experience with a certified regressionist to guide you through the journey. Westerners may find the reincarnation concept hard to accept because this contradicts many of the Judeo-Christian beliefs. This concept was banned by the Christian church, although reincarnation was a part of the early Christian doctrine. This gives credence to the fact that “reincarnation” is not new thought. The debate has been going on…well, for lifetimes.

Natural Nutmeg - July/August 2014
The purpose of a Past Life Regression is to have the opportunity to experience a past lifetime. The reasons for the experience vary. Sometimes a physical illness or emotional issue may turn out to be a past life issue. A person may struggle with swallowing pills. She may suffer from asthma, or perhaps cannot bear anything constricting or tight around the throat. This person may discover they were hanged, or somehow restricted by the neck, or even died by choking. It is helpful to clear the condition or issue, once identified, by reminding the person that this issue was from a different lifetime and the issue is not needed in this lifetime. A useful hypnotic suggestion will be to allow the person to leave the issue or concern in the past as it is no longer needed in the current lifetime. This same technique is used to help one understand why they have emotional issues surrounding trust or self-confidence. Your belief system may contain areas not supporting you in your current lifetime. You may have experienced pain, or lack, or loss in another lifetime that created a belief that impacts your current lifetime. To put it simply…you may have lived a lifetime when it was required that you drew water from the river and carried this weight into the house. This belief will not serve you in a house with indoor plumbing…so if a belief serving you in another lifetime is holding you back in this one…would this serve you to release it? By exploring our past lives we can find the solutions for all present life problems. The principle of cause and effect work in one’s prior lifetimes as well as the current one. Something set in motion in the past may result in a corresponding effect on a person’s current physical, emotional, mental or spiritual well-being. This may be a past desire, thought, feeling, emotion, vow, promise, decision, evasion, or a past experience. Fears and phobias can sometimes be traced back to the present lifetime but often are burdens carried throughout lifetimes. Past life regression can bring an understanding of the specific causes of the fears and phobias. Knowledge is power no matter how many lifetimes ago the knowledge was acquired. If one is claustrophobic in the present lifetime it could be due to having been buried alive in an earthquake in a previous lifetime. A past life regression can help leave the trauma where it belongs: in the past allowing one to literally breathe easier in the current life-
time. Lessons from a past life regression may continue to unfold for days or even weeks after you leave the regressionist’s office. Choices, preferences, and dislikes of foods, weather, and even people may make more sense after a past life regression. Relationship issues can be resolved by understanding patterns in one’s own beliefs or with the person who has shared other lifetimes. Once these behavior patterns are understood and the reason they do not serve in present relationships, the person is able to see the larger perspective and therefore the relationships are improved or ‘healed’. Past Life Regression can be very useful in alleviating one of the most common fears: death. Once an individual has experienced Past Life Regression it allows a person to understand that death is a transition from one state to another. We have lived before and we
will live again. Experiencing past lives validates and allows a deeper understanding of current life patterns. Knowledge is power and Past Life Regression healing is very powerful. Hypnosis for Weight Release
D
id you know that studies have proven hypnosis to be thirty times more effective than traditional diets? This translates into an over 90% success rate with hypnosis vs. a 3% success rate with the average diet. Studies have also shown that people who use hypnosis keep the weight off long term vs. starting to gain it back the day the diet is over, and usually gaining back more weight than they had to release in the first place. Given those facts, hypnosis seems like a no brainer right? So, why isn’t everyone using hypnosis to easily, safely and permanently release excess weight? Having been a former skeptic about hypnosis and other “woo woo” techniques, I’m sure it’s skepticism (otherwise known as fear) that’s holding them back. What most people know about hypnosis is that someone totally embarrassed themselves in a stage show by clucking like a chicken or dancing like Madonna. Or what’s depicted on TV, usually some version of sinister mind control; which they want nothing to do with. I’ve even had clients tell me that they were told it was the “tool of the devil”. (Don’t dismay it’s Pope endorsed.) I get it – I was there myself. I was petrified of getting hypnotized because I had no idea what to expect and my fear of the unknown held me back.

Natural Nutmeg - July/August 2014
What you probably don’t know is that you’ve been hypnotized literally thousands of times. (Complete the Hypnosis calculations below to get your exact number). Shocking I know, but true. Hypnosis is the theta brainwave state, which you go into all on your own, and is how we access the powerful subconscious mind, which is the other 90% of our mental capacity. There’s nothing to lose (but weight) and a tremendous amount to gain. Why diet the hard way when you can be hypnotized and release weight the easy way? As one who struggled with her weight for years – I can’t tell you how great it feels to have those extra 35 lbs. gone permanently – thanks to hypnosis. If you’re reading this article you’re probably all too familiar with dieting. You get to your breaking point, can’t tolerate the discomfort of carrying the excess weight around a minute longer so you decide to go on a diet. Maybe you do a little research and pick the one that sounds like it’s got the most possibility. You buy a book or two, you order the meals, shakes, supplements or whatever other secret ingredient is required. Then you put the start date off for a few days or even weeks. The day before you start you gear up by having a good old binge on all your favorite foods because you know you’re going to be deprived and miserable for the next 6-8 weeks. Most people don’t even make it through week one. The minority, (3%) have success to varying degrees and usually celebrates that success with their favorite food. Relieved that the torture is over, they head back into their old relationship with food, which is what got them in trouble in the first place. Every hypnotist has a different process, so I can only speak to what your experience working with one of the Certified Hypnotists at Mind Matters will be. We start with a little light soul searching about your relationship with food and most importantly your relationship with yourself, because excess weight is merely a symptom of a deeper issue. Traditional diets only focus on those surface symptoms, never getting to the core of the problem, which is why the symptom of excess weight returns again and again with the traditional diet. Our focus in the hypnotic process is to understand all 360 degrees of your issue. For example, in many cases people subconsciously believe that excess weight serves the purpose of protecting the body, whether it’s protection from feelings, being seen, unwanted advances, or as a form of punishment. In addition, we all have many false connections that our minds have made around food (e.g. food = comfort, company, reward, control, calm, love). It’s these connections that head us toward food whenever we’re in need of emotional comfort and it’s these connections that are very hard, often impossible to override with conscious will power. We all also have emotional reservoirs or storehouses that we try to use food to
stuff down, or numb ourselves from feeling, but again feelings are much more powerful than logic. We know what we’re supposed to be eating, but the feelings of want or need are always stronger. We’ve been programed or have programmed ourselves in many unhealthy ways when it comes to how we treat ourselves and how we fuel our bodies. All those programs live in the subconscious mind, which is the part of the mind that’s accessed during hypnosis and why we can create significant and lasting change where it counts. Bottom line… emotions dictate behavior. What are you trying to stuff down, distract from, or create with food? Hypnosis Calculator. Multiply: Your Age x 365 x 2 = ________

The Cellulite Triple Threat!
I
t’s summertime! Time to head to the beach! Time to head to the pool! Time to banish cellulite!
“I’ve tried everything to get rid of cellulite,” you say. But if you haven’t tried the triple threat, you are in for a delightful surprise.
Step One: Synergie AMS® The Synergie AMS® system is FDA approved and supported by research. At Anew You, we have personally used this system for years, and have seen the changes in our bodies, and in client’s bodies. It reduces cellulite, tightens the skin, and reduces circumferential body measurements.
The Problem Cellulite is a combination of fat, water and toxins trapped in a net of collagen and elastin fibers. As we age, the body’s circulation and elimination processes become impaired, connective tissue loses its strength, and unmetabolized fats and wastes become trapped just beneath the skin instead of being eliminated. Over a period of time these wastes enlarge, harden and push through spaces in the connective fiber bands that anchor the skin and keep it looking smooth, and thus the infamous dimply cellulite is born.
The Solution Three advanced, safe, noninvasive, enjoyable cellulite therapies, which all do a terrific job on their own, create amazing results when used together. The treatments are enjoyable, safe, and noninvasive. This summer you can have thighs that are smoother and thinner, with immediate (yes, immediate!) results that keep getting better as your treatments continue.
In our experience, clients who have had 16 treatments, while watching their diet and drinking the appropriate amount of water, have lost a full pant size. A national study reported that 36 women treated twice a week over an eight week period showed a loss of inches in 100% of the participants and visible reduction in the appearance of cellulite in 91% of the participants. In some individuals, almost three inches were lost after treatment. Noticeable changes can often be seen within four to six treatments,
although most people can either see or feel a difference in the skin’s appearance after the first treatment. The Synergie AMS provides optimal stimulation to subcutaneous tissues, achieving a type of subdermal tissue massage that’s not possible using traditional massage techniques. Positive and negative pressure (suction) manipulate deep tissue. This improves the appearance of skin, increases circulation, relieves edema, and reduces muscle pain. Importantly, it also is detoxifying; it expels toxins into the lymphatic system, which are then eliminated by the body. First introduced in Europe in the 1980s, the original purpose of this technology was to soften burn scars. However, people also saw that their skin looked better and that they lost inches. Where else can you get all this and enjoy it? Most clients find the treatments relaxing, and many report that they’ve nearly fallen asleep. A typical treatment program consists of twice-weekly sessions for 4 or 8 weeks, followed by monthly maintenance visits. Treatments last about 30 minutes and the number of treatments is typically between 8 and 16, however, it is customized for each person. Because Synergie works with the lymphatic system, it’s important to drink plenty of water during your treatment program. Synergie does the heavy lifting in terms of breaking up cellulite, but it is important to eat right and stay active to achieve the best results quickly.
Step 2: Massage CuppingTM Massage Cupping™ is a fantastic addition to the Synergy Technology, speeding and enhancing Synergie’s results. Massage cupping is most commonly used by people who want the benefits of a deep-tissue massage without the pressure. When cupping is used in concert with Synergie, the cups are placed on the thighs vs. the torso. The suction breaks up cellulite, speeds the removal of toxins, and softens the fibrous connective cords that cause cellulite to look so lumpy. Cupping is an ancient practice in which glass cups and negative pressure are used to loosen adhesions and 28

lift connective tissue while opening lymphatic pathways. Tense muscles are easily softened. Massage cupping is a very effective deep-tissue therapy. The suction and negative pressure can loosen dimpled tissue, and encourage blood flow and lymph drainage.
Step 3: Clinically Proven Cellulite Serum with Organic Ingredients Anew You carries Adonia LegTone® Serum; an in-home cellulite treatment that almost immediately (in 13 minutes) reduces the appearance of cellulite. Rachel Ray had a demonstration on her show and enthusiastically pointed to the results, saying, “I am really impressed with that!” Go to http:// anewyouskincare.net/adonia-legtone-serum/ to see the Rachel Ray clip, and to see before and after photos; keep in mind that the ‘after’ photos were taken just 9-13 minutes after the before photos! A strict clinical trial conducted by one of the nation’s top cosmetics laboratories reported that: “Adonia LegTone Serum demonstrated a 47% decrease in the appearance of cellulite in 9 minutes. In 6 weeks, there was a further decrease in the appearance of cellulite of 72%”. This is by far the most amazing cellulite cream we’ve ever seen. Our customers use it on their thighs, arms, stomachs, and derrieres. It helps resurface the appearance of uneven skin texture, reduce the appearance of cellulite, and firms sagging skin. It employs organic, plant-based stem cells and doesn’t contain parabens.

What Do You Want to Pass on to the Next Generation?
A
s a Professional Organizer, I have the privilege of working with small-business owners as well as home owners and renters to help them de-clutter, create organizational systems and bring profitability into their businesses and peace into their homes. But one of my favorite privileges is working with seniors to help them right-size. Why do I use the term right-size as opposed to downsize? Because I believe when an individual makes a decision to either de-clutter their current home or to move to a Senior-Living or Assisted-Living facility, that decision is right for them. It’s the time in their life when a change needs to occur and because it needs to occur its right. It can be a time of adventure, new beginnings, and even new friends.
Your Personal Legacy As we help our parents or loved ones make this change in their life, we encourage them to have their estate in order. Have they met with their estate planner and put their living will in place? Have they assigned their power of attorney or medical representative? Have they decided how to divide the financial assets or determine who gets what material objects? But one area that often gets neglected is their personal legacy; leaving a part of themselves. As I help with rightsizing, I ask a question I heard many years ago. “Do you want to leave this earth as an empty dish or a shade tree?” What do I mean by this question? Each of our lives has a purpose and we all have something of ourselves to leave behind. Do we let our trials, tribulations or blessings be left as an empty dish? Or do we share our life to allow others to sit under the shade tree and learn about who we are, what our values are and how we got where we are today, so we can pass on that part of ourselves to others?
It’s About the Journey Families strengthen themselves by stories. Those stories don’t always need to be positive and uplifting. They can be the times in our life that were difficult. Were you part of the Holocaust or did you serve in WWII? Did you have a miraculous child born or did you lose a precious child? Were you out of work with major financial struggles? It’s all important because in some way it formed who you are and who you are needs to be known by your children and grandchildren. According to the company Saving Memories Forever, “It turns out inheriting money is the last thing people are concerned about. What your children most want is a sense of your values. Then they want stories that make your family unique.”
Photos Launch the Stories How do you find those stories and even know where to begin? That’s easy–with photos. While you may not initially remember all 30

the significant events in your life, pictures will help those memories come alive. As a Certified Photo Organizer, I love working with families to help uncover those long lost stories. One day I was helping an 85-year-old woman with her heritage photos. We came across a newspaper clipping that included a photo of her with a young man and another couple. When I asked her about it, she told me that was her first date with her husband and that they had attended his bowling banquet. Simple enough but I felt there was more to this story. As I encouraged her to tell me more, a story unfolded. She said, “See that couple in front of us?” I nodded. “After the banquet we went to their house for coffee.” “Ok, tell me more.” “Well,” she said, “I didn’t get home until 3 am.” Upon her arrival home, she found that her father had locked her out of the house. Now what does she do? Her date was gone and she had no way to get into her house. As she walked around the house, she noticed that the bathroom window was open. She managed to shimmy herself up and climb through the window and who greets her in the bathroom doorway but her dad. Not only was that scene not pleasant but she tore her nylon stockings, and since it was post WWII, stockings were still a bit of a premium. It was hard to tell if she was more upset about being locked out of her house, greeting her angry father or ripping her nylon stockings. What a night she had and what a moment of memories we both had. Would I have known the story behind the photo if I just took the box and skimmed through? No. But by engaging, encouraging and sharing I found out a whole lot more about this woman and her younger dating years.
Be a Shade Tree People are precious. People’s lives are precious and people’s stories are key to every family. Don’t let your stories sit in a box or remain filed on your computer. Share those stories with your family. Create your legacy and encourage your parents to gather their memories and share their stories. It helps us know who we are and can even help us know where we are going. So I ask you again. “Do you want to leave this earth as an empty dish or as a shade tree?” I believe in shade trees and as a Certified Photo Organizer I can help you create that legacy. Contact me for a free assessment and 10% off your initial Photo Organization. Submitted by Regina Sanchez, Professional Organizer & Certified Photo & Home Movie Organizer. Hormone Health and Traditional Chinese Medicine
By Laura Mignosa, NCCH
E
arly doctors of traditional medicine knew little about the hormonal pathways in the human body. They did, however, understand the essential principles of health, wellbeing and regenerative hormonal balance to such a degree that the Chinese were able to establish the first gynecological medical specialty hundreds of years ago. Thanks to Ted Kaptchuk, author of “The Web That Has No Weaver,” we can get a glimpse of how Chinese herbal therapy works.
Women Over 30 During my many years of study in Chinese Hospitals, the doctors would always tell me how all women over the age of 30 would be considered blood deficient and emotionally stagnate due to our monthly menses and child bearing. Maintaining a healthy and abundant supply of blood is the foundation principle of hormonal health. Women’s reproductive cycle is a blood-dependent cycle. When the body is producing an abundant supply of pure blood, there is rich circulation to the ovaries and to the endocrine system overall. This freely circulating and abundant blood supply provides sufficient raw material for healthy and balanced hormonal flows throughout the body. It is commonly observed in clinical practice that blood deficiency is at the root of a broad range of hormonal imbalances and simply put, insufficient blood production and flow leads to a disharmony in hormonal health and balance.
Liver Health A stressed-out liver becomes tight and contracted. A toxic liver becomes like a little furnace in the body, overheating and suppressing healthy spleen and stomach function. When the spleen and stomach are suppressed and weakened they fail to produce the abundant blood supply which is so critical to health and wellbeing. Life in the human body arises out of a miraculous play of fire and water. The fire is the energy that allows the body to move and work. The water is the deeper living essence that cools and moistens the body. I love the analogy of ‘essence’ being the oil in the car. It is much thicker than water in the radiator, and therefore can lubricate the engine to keep it cool. We all know if we let the oil run low in the car, the temperature light goes on, indicating that the car is overheating. This is called false fire in Chinese Medicine, because it is not a true heat (the engine is not literally on fire). Though we think of the signs and symptoms of a menopausal woman when the essence (oil) is low, this is also a concern for men. If men have chronic illnesses such as diabetes, MS, Hep C or other western-named diseases the more heavy fluid called Yin is also evaporated and it goes double for women who have lost their essence due to years of blood loss with menses and giving birth.
5000 Years of Evidence With the discovery of a group of plants whose essential oils are powerful blood precursors, traditional doctors created complex herbal formulas for health and wellbeing. Taken in conjunction with food (they believe that we are what we absorb, not just what we eat) they are safe and effective. Modern research and clinical experience continue to demonstrate the virtue of these medicines but the 5000 years of using these formulas has always been enough evidence for me. Life can be stressful and toxic, and it is always challenging. The energetic ‘liver’ in Chinese medicine has to deal with all of that. The liver not only purifies the blood, it also regulates the flow of energy, or Qi, throughout the body. It provides for the smooth spreading of emotions and all cycles like digestion, sleep, and especially emotions that are exhibited as anger and resentment.

As we age, the fire of life activity tends to dry up these living water essences. So, as I mentioned above, menopausal hot flushing is one of the most common complaints in the change of life. This common pattern of menopausal overheating demonstrates the imbalance that arises when the water essences of the body become deficient. It is therefore necessary to nourish the essence (Yin) of the body in order to maintain health, wellbeing, and balanced hormonal flows as we mature. Here are some common herbs used to maintain wellness as we grow gracefully into old age. Please remember that no one herb can do all things for all people, and that a balanced formula is essential so as to First Do No Harm. This list helps you identify herbs in supplements, teas, and Western herbal formulas that contain Traditional Chinese Herbs.
Maintain Wellness with Herbs Herbs that nourish essence include: Rehmannia, Cornus, Lycium, Scrophularia, Anemerrhena, Phellodendron, Polygonum Multiflora. Herbs that serve blood production include: Angelica sinensis, WhitePeony, Ligusticum, Rehmannia, Polygonum Multiflora, Fructus Lycium, and Fructus Morus. Herbs that serve liver balance include: Bupluerum, Gardenia, Cyperus, Curcuma, Atractylodes, Codonopsis, Licorice, and Scutelarria. Herbs that help to make Qi: Codonopsis, Atractylodes, Panax Ginseng (in small amounts), White Peony and Eleuthrococcus (also known as Siberian Ginseng) Laura Mignosa is a Certified Chinese Herbologist in private practice at her school, the Connecticut Institute for Herbal Studies in New Britain, CT at 912 Corbin Avenue. Natural Considerations in the Management of Parkinson’s Disease
A
Parkinson’s disease diagnosis can be overwhelming, as for symptom management options can seem limiting. Parkinson’s disease affects an area of the brain, the substantia nigra, which produces a neurotransmitter called dopamine. Dopamine helps the body with movement and coordination and when dopamine production is reduced, symptoms of shaking, tremors, and difficulty with walking, depression and cognitive impairment can occur. The cause of Parkinson’s has yet to be determined. However, there have been links made inferring that genetics, environmental toxic exposure and history of head trauma can increase one’s risk of developing Parkinson’s. Traditional medications that are used to slow the progression of symptoms are limited to a maximum dose. Unfortunately, even when maximum dosages are reached, symptoms can still progress.
Reducing Symptoms Natural medicine can reduce symptoms and doses of medications needed. The following are natural treatment therapies to be considered in addition to traditional Parkinson’s treatments.
Environmental Factors Several pesticides and herbicides, chemicals used to kill insects and weeds, have been shown to destroy dopamine-producing cells in the brain. Avoidance of exposure to lawn-chemical sprays and insecticides can reduce the risk of developing Parkinson’s and help to reduce further symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. There are eco-friendly ways to de-bug and prevent weeds in your yard. Chickens and other livestock can reduce ticks and other insects. White vinegar and natural soaps can be used as weed killers.
Diet Protein consumption can reduce the effectiveness of medications used for Parkinson’s symptom management. Limiting protein intake during daytime hours and reserving protein intake for later in the evening can reduce tremors associated with Parkinson’s. Protein restriction needs to be done with caution; deficiency can result if not managed correctly. Working with a health professional to ensure adequate protein intake is essential.
Detoxification There are several nutrients and vitamins that play a role in clearing toxic chemicals in the body. Detoxification occurs in several organs but is the primary role of the liver. The liver clears things from the body that can potentially create damage and dysfunction. In Parkinson’s disease, protecting the cells of the brain, particularly the dopamine producing cells, is very important. Coenzyme Q10, (CoQ10) is a nutrient needed to feed the powerhouses of each cell, called the mitochondria. Mitochondria act like a cell’s battery, providing the energy for it to function. The cells of the substantia nigra, the area of the brain where dopamine is produced (and most affected in Parkinson’s disease) need adequate CoQ10 to function. Feeding this battery system assists in general health and helps to improve the production of dopamine, thus reducing Parkinson’s symptoms. B vitamins act as cofactors in the production of dopamine. Cofactors are nutrients needed to produce a particular substance. B vitamins also assist in liver detoxification. B vitamin levels in the body can be tested to ensure adequate absorption and can be supplemented in higher amounts to aid in treatment. Glutathione is a potent antioxidant that helps to reduce destruction of the cells in the substantia nigra. Glutathione acts like a magnet, attracting toxic waste in the body. Glutathione production in the body requires other nutrients like sulfur. Sulfur content is highest in cruciferous vegetables including broccoli, kale, cabbage and cauliflower. Eating a diet rich in cruciferous vegetables assists in glutathione production.
Stress Management A calm and relaxed mind improves dopamine levels. It has also been inferred that deep restorative sleep can improve dopamine production, thereby reducing Parkinson’s symptoms. Managing stress and maintaining adequate sleep is needed for general health and is essential in Parkinson’s disease management. Parkinson’s disease can become quite devastating in advanced stages, making early detection and treatment interventions essential. Nutritional therapies in addition to medication may be the key to preventing and reducing further symptoms. A One-Stop Shop For Healthy Living
W
ith today’s hectic schedules, many consumers are forced to make tough choices when it comes to their diets. However, Dr. Allie Mendelson, a Farmington-based chiropractor, believes finding healthy nutrition sources does not have to be so stressful.
A New Health Food Store Earlier this year, Mendelson opened a co-located health food store within her chiropractic business, to ensure that her patients have easy access to proper nutrition. Mendelson, who owns Talcott Family Chiropractic (TFC) with her husband David, says she first thought of the idea during routine nutritional consultations with patients. “Part of the problem is that people are very busy,” explains Mendelson. “I would have these nutritional consults and explain to patients, “This is what you need when dealing with diabetes,” or “This is what you need when dealing with cancer,” or “This will reduce inflammation,” and so on.
the big health food stores’ prices. Through direct arrangements with ranchers, TFC’s discount meat program features 100% grass-fed beef, and heritage breed pastured pork and chicken. Customers also can purchase specially prepared items, such as bacon, sausage and hot dogs, that contain no nitrates, sugar, MSG, coloring, or preservatives. Mendelson’s patients and food-store customers simply order through the Website (www.TFCHealthFoods.com), or by telephone, and pick up their bundles soon afterwards at the store. “I’ll make a recommendation and the patient can go right into the store and find it,” she explains. “They can sign up for our discount grass-fed meats program and buy the meat cheaper through us than they could on their own.”
Only Top-Quality Products
Finding the Root of the Problem
But when it came to finding nutritional sources that would lead patients on the road to wellness, Mendelson herself had a hard time sourcing quality foods. “As I got more educated about nutrition and started incorporating it more in my practice, I realized that even when I went to the large health food stores, it was a huge effort to sift through so many products laden with sugar or poor quality oils,” she explains. She tells stories of patients becoming frustrated after driving to five different retail stores on a Saturday because no single location had all the foods they needed. Having a store on the same site as the practice allows Mendelson to work with patients to set a healthy diet. She says eating the right foods can help people avoid - even reverse -chronic disease and obesity without taking daily medications. “People wanted to eat healthy foods, but found it too hard to plan,” she explains. “So we started carrying a few things in the store. As demand grew, we carried more and more.” Mendelson’s practice aims to provide cutting-edge nutritional science education and personalized support; the health-food store follows in that progression. She says it took more than two years to research and identify suppliers of foods that meet her strict nutritional standards to cover the basics of a healthy pantry.
While having easy access to products is important, feedback received during patient consultations allows Mendelson to focus on the root of the problem. Once the source is identified, patients can begin to reclaim their health.
Beef, Pork, and Chicken In addition, she offers a co-op-style program, through which customers can buy high-quality pastured meats at prices far below 34

Food and Diabetes “I have a lot of patients with diabetes,” she says. “In meetings with them, I try to figure out what is that specific patient’s weakness. For example, does s/he crave sugar? Then we’ll find alternatives to make it easier to transition.” Through its national lab partner, TFC offers comprehensive routine blood and urine testing to determine specific metabolic abnormalities and nutritional deficiencies. One such test measures blood fatty acid content including Omega 3, Omega 6 and transfats. An improper fatty acid intake affects the balance of anti- and pro-inflammatory eicosanoids, thereby increasing health risks, notes Mendelson. And TFC’s program appears to be paying dividends. Recently, a diabetic patient visited TFC, and after making key changes in his diet told Mendelson that he is completely off the diabetic medication. What’s her secret? It’s not magic, Mendelson asserts. “You have to understand diabetes. You have to stop putting sugar in your body. For many, diabetes is a self-induced disease. If you eat poorly enough, you can become diabetic because your body simply can’t handle all the sugar that you’re putting in. Many people don’t understand how prevalent sugar is in their diet–not just
white crystal sugar, but a wide range of carbohydrates that rapidly convert to simple sugars.” In the U.S., diabetes rates have been skyrocketing over the past 20 years. While some percentage can be linked to genetics, diet accounts for a large percentage of today’s diabetic culture. Unfortunately, she says, today’s harried consumers have come to rely on a daily cocktail of carbs, sugars and boxed foods. A routine, she says, that sets up even the most ardent nutritionist to fail. “Patients don’t know!” she asserts. “They’re often told by doctors that they will never get better. Most people who have diabetes are told they have a chronic disease, and that they can never cure it, they can just manage it.” Mendelson disagrees. “People need to change their relationships with food,” she says. “And that’s we’re trying to do.” She admits that her regimen likely won’t work for the weak-willed. “First of all, you have to believe that you’re going to get better,” she says. “I think that’s the most important part of it. If you’re addicted to carbs and absolutely won’t change, then we can’t help you.” When asked about the difficulties involved in selecting the right foods for the patient, Mendelson exclaims that the process is not about matching. “You’re not so much trying to heal with food,” she says, “as you are trying not to kill with food.” Talcott Family Chiropractic is co-located with TFC Health Foods at 230 Farmington Avenue in Farmington. Nutmeg “Nuggets” All Peels are Not Created Equal
S
kin peels have been reported in medical literature since 1941. Most doctors agree that regular chemical peels may be one of the best things we can do for our skin. Not only will a chemical peel improve the most common skin issues, but they also may prevent many skin problems from showing up down the road. Many people feel intimated by the word, “Chemical Peel”; and the thought of acids being applied to the outer layers of their skin. Now, there is a 100% natural organic peel that uses no acids but can obtain chemical peel like results with less downtime. Introducing . . . The Organic Green Peel • Natural and Organic • Medically Endorsed (was also featured on The Doctors) • Marine Algae and Herb Based (contains over a dozen herbs) • A Natural, Safe and Effective alternative to acids These bio-active compounds react with the skin to exfoliate, smooth, refine, resurface and polish the outer layers of the skin. The herbs also penetrate the pores to stimulate fibroblasts. This organic peel treats and corrects the same skin conditions as a chemical peel, such as: oily, acneic and congested skin, dull skin, hyper-pigmentation, photo-aging, fine lines and wrinkles. So why not treat yourself and your skin to something natural, organic and healthy today! The Pretty Face Place, 1720 Ellington Rd. (across from Stop & Shop Plaza), South Windsor. The Secret to a Happy Marriage: A Your Side, Your Way Mattress
I
n honor of wedding season, The Clean Bedroom has just announced its secret to a happy marriage: a Your Side, Your Way Mattress. “A 200-pound side sleeper married to a 110-pound back sleeper shouldn’t sleep on the same mattress,” says Chris Chamberlin, co-founder and co-owner of The Clean Bedroom. “Choosing an organic mattress with customizable configurations—meaning a bed that might be firm on one side and soft on the other—ensures both spouses sleep well. And, as many know, a great night’s sleep cures all kinds of marital discord.” “We only recommend products that meet our high standards for eco-friendly materials, quality craftsmanship, and exceptional value,” says Chamberlin. The Clean Bedroom’s picks for customizable mattresses include the Duo OrganicPedic® Mattress by OMI; the Serenity Mattress by Savvy Rest; the EOS Organic Mattress by Naturepedic; the Dolcezza, Nature’s Nest, and Vicence by Green Sleep; and the Oyasumi line of mattresses, made exclusively for The Clean Bedroom—each has an internal core system with multiple comfort configurations, with a zippered outer shell for the ability to reconfigure as desired. “You spend one-third of your life in bed and, with a customized healthy mattress, one-third of your married life can be happy, with no extra effort,” says Chamberlin. “It kind of makes you think wedding vows should be to love, honor, and get a great night’s sleep. To that end, we believe a new Your Side, Your Way Mattress may be the easiest way to maintain or reclaim that honeymoon magic.” Chris Chamberlin is co-founder and co-owner of The Clean Bedroom (thecleanbedroom.com). She is an expert in healthy sleep, and she’s fantastically fun to interview. Expressive Art Therapy for Pain and Disease
S
tudies show that individuals who use art to express their traumas and feelings have a healthier psychological profile, a more active immune system and experience far less illness than those who don’t. Researchers have found that sharing the experience of life-threatening breast cancer can in fact increase the patient’s life expectancy. Expressive art allows an individual to express thoughts and feelings that they might not be able to express with words. It is more likely that the patient will express a more private perception of her illness and this might help the physician as well, giving useful insight into the patient’s real concerns regarding her illness. The presence of medical illness or disability may leave a person with a lack of self-esteem and autonomy, due to the dependence upon medical treatment and loss of control over their body. In the making of art the patients are given the freedom to choose between different materials and styles, and to create what they want to create. The experience of art therapy is that this can help regain the “lost” autonomy, giving the patient a feeling of mastery and ability to control events. Submitted by Elisabeth Moss BFA, LMT. Water and Your Pet
W
ith the warm days of summer upon us, keeping hydrated is just as important to your pets as it is to you. Pets, like people, can become dehydrated in the heat of summer which can lead to damage of major organs such as the liver, heart and kidney. Without water the body will start to shut down. Water is essential for: • Removal of wastes from the body • Digestion • Joint movement • Regulation of body temperature • Absorption of nutrients • Circulation Feeding a raw diet to your dog or cat is not only more natural than kibble diets; it can also help keep your animals hydrated as raw diets are naturally 70% moisture. Despite the type of diet your pet is on, access to fresh, clean water at all times is essential. Provide small frequent amounts of water after exercise. Gulping large amounts of water following heavy exercise can result in vomiting and can also potentially be a contributing factor to bloat, a life threatening condition. Dogs that are stressed or exercised/worked heavily can be given electrolyte replenishers which will recharge and replenish electrolyte levels. Oma’s Pride, 308 Arch Rd.
