S

ummer is here and I’m excited because it’s my favorite season – I love the warm weather, farm fresh fruits and veggies, farm to table dinners, festivals and time spent on the beach or at a lake. But I’m even more excited this month to announce that the Natural Nutmeg 10BEST Awards are right around the corner! Our first annual reader-nominated 10Best Awards last year was a huge hit! It brought a ton of awareness for Holistic Businesses and Practitioners and Natural Nutmeg throughout the state and we received amazing feedback from the winners and readers. Many business owners in categories like Natural Product Companies, Spas, Wineries, Breweries, and Farm-to-Table restaurants said they just discovered the magazine and didn’t realize their customers were avid readers and fans. Because of this we were able to increase our advertiser demographic and distribution! As a Natural Nutmeg reader, you will have the opportunity to nominate your favorite holistic practitioner or business in 20 categories listed on page 18. Nominations will take place between September 1st-15th through an online survey tool that will be announced in the September issue. Winners will be announced in late September. We will be showcasing the 10BEST in each category in a special additional issue released in December 2018. This issue will also include articles, ads, business profiles and a holistic practitioner directory that you can keep and use for all of 2019. And we have some great articles this month on healthy eating while dining out, summer skincare tips, seasonal fruits and veggies, and maximizing your mental, emotional and physical potential! In Health and Happiness,

THE BUZZ Simsbury Mom Invents New Product for the Oldest of Human Problems

Revolution Integrative Health Opens in Farmington

IT GRIT® is a natural wash-off underarm scrub that aims to better cleanse the underarm, reduce body odor and improve consumer satisfaction with natural deodorant. Katie E. Boyle, MPH is the owner of Boyle’s Naturals, LLC, a natural product manufacturing company and social enterprise that offers consumers evidence-based solutions for reducing exposures to toxins in their homes' air, water, food and products they buy. “The number one complaint of users of natural deodorant is its lack of effectiveness,” Boyle says. It is less effective, she says, because natural deodorants intentionally don’t contain aluminum, a key ingredient found in conventional deodorant/anti-perspirants that, she says, “kills bacteria and artificially clogs pores to stop us from sweating. Sweating is a normal body process; it’s the stinking part that we can work with!” Boyle tinkered with natural ingredients to create a product that would clean her underarm better than just soap and water. It’s gently exfoliating, smells crisp and clean and does a great job at inhibiting the growth of said stinky bacteria in the underarm. It’s used as a wash-off scrub - in the shower or on the go - prior to (or for some lucky few, instead of) applying deodorant. PIT GRIT® is for sale at BoylesNaturals.com in a four-ounce jar and one-ounce travel size. Katie Boyle can be reached via email at Katie@BoylesNaturals.com, social media @BoyleHealth.

THE BUZZ Financial Health Check: 4 Things You Should Know About Medicare

A

re you or is someone you love enrolled in Medicare? There are some important changes underway with Medicare cards that you should be aware of this summer, right here in Connecticut. Medicare is a national health insurance program for United States citizens or permanent residents. Funded by taxes paid by workers and employers, Medicare helps people pay for some medical expenses including hospital insurance, medical bills, and prescription drugs. Participants in Medicare are known as “Medicare beneficiaries” and carry cards detailing: • Health Insurance Claim Number (HICN) – the beneficiary’s unique identification number • Eligible Services – the types of Medicare coverage the beneficiary is entitled to receive • Coverage Start Date Historically, the HICN listed on Medicare cards has been beneficiaries’ Social Security number. However, Social Security numbers are being removed from Medicare cards to prevent fraud, fight identity theft and keep taxpayer dollars safe. The new identification numbers will not affect any services beneficiaries are entitled to receive.

Natural Nutmeg - July/August 2018

In April 2018, Medicare stopped issuing cards with Social Security numbers to newly eligible Medicare beneficiaries and began mailing new cards to existing Medicare beneficiaries. Medicare is continuing to mail new cards to existing beneficiaries until April 2019. The distribution of new Medicare cards to existing beneficiaries is taking place in waves, by state. Connecticut Medicare beneficiaries are scheduled to begin receiving their new cards this summer. Distribution of the cards is random by geographic location. If you are a beneficiary, your card may arrive at a different time than that of your friends or neighbors. If you or someone you love is a Medicare beneficiary in Connecticut: 1. Ensure your address listed with Social Security is current; your new card will be sent to the address on file. To check your address, visit https://www.ssa.gov/myaccount/ 2. Monitor the status of card mailings online at www.medicare.gov/NewCard 3. Watch out for scams and report any suspected instances of fraud, errors, or abuse. Scammers are calling Medicare beneficiaries and claiming to be employees of the Social Security Administration, Medicare, or the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). These scammers say that they are informing beneficiaries of the Medicare mailing, and ask beneficiaries to confirm personal information. Medicare will not call you to confirm your current Medicare number, coverage, or effective dates. Do not give any of your personal information to anyone over the phone. If you receive a call from someone requesting this information from you, hang up the phone and call Connecticut’s Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) program at 1-800-994-9422. SMP exists to empower and assist Medicare beneficiaries, families, and caregivers. The office of the Inspector General wants to know what areas are receiving these fraudulent calls. 4. Use available Medicare resources for guidance and support on this or other topics: • www.medicare.gov: official U.S. Government Site for Medicare • http://www.ct.gov/agingservices/SMP: Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) program services • CT Area Agencies on Aging: local, private, nonprofit planning agencies • http://www.swcaa.org Southwestern CT • https://www.aoascc.org/ South Central CT • http://www.seniorresourcesec.org/ Eastern CT • http://www.ncaaact.org/ North Central CT • http://wcaaa.org/ Western CT Caroline Wetzel is a Certified Financial PlannerTM (CFP®) and Vice President, Private Wealth Advisor with Procyon Private Wealth Partners, LLC. Rocky Corner Cohousing: Healthy Living in Connecticut

H

undreds of cohousing neighborhoods exist worldwide, with 165 established communities so far in the US. In cohousing, neighbors know each other before they move in and build close relationships creating and maintaining their community together. The main ingredients of cohousing include individually owned homes, a common house shared by all, a pedestrian center and egalitarian governance. Cohousing provides the privacy we are accustomed to with the connections we seek. Rocky Corner is a new cohousing neighborhood being built in Bethany. It will be the first in Connecticut. The community’s future residents care deeply about the health of the planet; they are committed to green building and sustainable living. The homes are oriented toward the sun for passive solar heating. The common house will have a commercial kitchen and a large gathering space for shared meals, a large wood working shop, and other shared facilities. Organic and permaculture principles will be used in the yards, community gardens, orchards, ponds and farm. Edible landscaping—for people and wildlife—is a major theme. Living at Rocky Corner means so much more than buying a house. The group’s vision statement shows the intention of a healthy lifestyle: “Rocky Corner cohousing is committed to creating a balance between independence and interdependence. We are dedicated to fostering a friendly, open, vibrant, mutually supportive atmosphere. Rocky Corner is multigenerational. We actively sustain our community and maintain our property by sharing work and responsibilities. We serve as an active member of the wider community. We are devoted to preserving, protecting, nurturing and regenerating the natural environment.” Market rate and income-qualified affordable homes from one to three bedrooms are still available. Find out more: www.rockycorner.org.

Natural Balance Massage Opens in Berlin

N

atural Balance Massage was opened by Lynne Gavrilis in 2011. Gavrilis was inspired by her daughter to attend massage school after her daughter went through the program. Lynne and the team of therapists at Natural Balance provide therapeutic massages for all types of injuries and chronic pain, as well as couples, pre-natal, reflexology and relaxation massage. “We love that our clientele is diverse. It keeps us on our toes and always learning about new conditions and ways to treat them.” Lynne sees many clients who suffer from anxiety and depression. She takes a holistic approach with attention to every detail designed to make the client’s session as comfortable as possible. She often gives recommendations of things her clients can do at home as a part of their wellness and recovery plan. Natural Balance encourages those new to massage therapy to try a couples massage. Oftentimes trying something new with someone you trust helps alleviate the first time nervousness and promotes the relaxation process. “We have new clients come in who are very hesitant and look quite uneasy but when they emerge from the room in their post massage fog they always have a smile on their face.” Lynne provides an affordable solution for clients who want to use regular massage for self care. The monthly membership is very popular; a 60 minute membership is just $66 a month. Members receive discounts on products, add on services and gift certificates. There is no contract, and unused monthly sessions roll over so there is no risk. Natural Balance is located in the Kensington section of Berlin and open Tuesday through Saturday, with evening hours Tues- Thurs. Appointments can also be made for Mondays however the front desk is closed. Visit https://ctnaturalbalance.com. See ad on page 9.

THE BUZZ Porrón and Piña Opens in Hartford

R

estaurant Porrón recently opened its doors to Connecticut’s capital city where locals and visitors are able to dine in the Goodwin Hotel’s signature Spanishstyle restaurant. Helmed by nationally renowned Chef Tyler Anderson and his all-star team - many of whom are behind the success that is Millwright’s Restaurant and The Cook & The Bear - Restaurant Porrón brings local fare to a globally- inspired menu. Notably, the restaurant is home to a Ham Bar and Wine Tasting Room, enticing patrons to partake in the truly traditional aspects of the Spanish dining experience. The Ham Bar features five assortments of Ham offered in 50 gram servings. The Wine Tasting Room features an Iberian-style tiled floor with ceiling-high shelving for over 60 wines from around the world. Anchored in the center of the rectangular room is a tall wooden tasting table that can be used by visiting vintner’s and private diners alike. Hartford’s publishing heyday is hat-tipped in the parlor-style, colonial Bar Piña - Restaurant Porrón’s sister bar at the Goodwin Hotel. The bar is situated on the corner of Haynes Street and Asylum in the heart of downtown Hartford. Piña, which is Spanish for pineapple, was a commonly accepted sign of hospitality in colonial America and elsewhere abroad. Chef Tyler Anderson works with Bar Director Tim Cabral of The Ordinary in New Haven, CT (listed as one of the World’s Top 20 Bars by Condé Nast Traveler) in putting together an extensive list of classic, modern and Spanish-inspired drinks. For day-timers, Pastry Chef Kristin Eddy has designed an artisan donut menu. Hotel guests and passers-by can stop in for some coffee and a sweet treat as they settle in the circular “library” nook of the establishment. Restaurant Porrón can be found at 1 Haynes Street in Hartford, Connecticut. Online it can be found at www.porronandpina.com and on instagram and facebook @porronandpina. To contact the restaurant directly call 860.904.2101.

Nutmeg “Nuggets” The Cool Side of Yoga

Do You Need a Detox from Perfection?

W

I

’m sure you’ve all heard about Bikram Yoga (yoga practiced in 108°), Hot Yoga, Sweat and Surrender Yoga and now even Hot Barre classes, but with this hot yoga craze we may be missing out on the cooler side of stretching, breathing and relaxing. There are several styles of yoga that are great to balance out summer activities and warmer climates so you can still get all the benefits of yoga. The first one is restorative yoga. This therapeutic style of yoga is often called “Active Relaxation” which uses props to support the body while keeping it active with minimal movement in a relaxed, meditative state. These poses are used to trigger the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for balancing the body. The postures are specifically designed for when you are feeling fatigued, weak, stressed from daily life or when you just want to experience stillness. They are equally beneficial to alleviate depression, reduce chronic pain, migraines and the symptoms of insomnia, asthma and to help recover from childbirth. The second style of yoga I recommend during the hot months is Gentle Yoga. Gentle Yoga consists of a balance between slow repetitive and sustained stretching. Standing postures are rare in gentle yoga and if they are performed they are to stretch rather than strengthen. Gentle yoga can be an excellent way to begin a yoga practice and start gaining flexibility in a way that won’t set you up for failure.

hat if they find out that I don’t know it all? What if I make a mistake in front of my co-workers? How does everyone do it all so perfectly – except me? If any of these thoughts feel familiar then you probably need a detox. A detox from the idea that to be of value you need to do everything perfectly. Here is the great news, you are not alone. Almost everyone at some time in their life feels that they are the only ones not holding up their end of the bargain and an imposter in their own life. And the higher the stakes, the closer you are moving towards your dream life, the more likely these thoughts will appear. Enter The Perfection Detox: Tame Your Inner Critic, Live Bravely and Unleash Your Joy. Written by wellness expert and recovering perfectionist Petra Kolber, this book offers a 21-step process that will show you how to drop the weight of perfection and soar into your dreams. Inside this book, you will find Petra’s seven-year process of detoxing from perfectionism compressed into just twenty-one steps. The Perfection Detox is divided into three parts, each of which has a distinct focus and intended outcome. Here’s what they look like: Part One: Identify Your Inner Critic and Explore Your Potential: Uncover the negative voices of your past and discover whom they belong to. Dissect and release any limiting beliefs that have allowed perfectionism to move into the driver’s seat of your life. Part Two: Shift Your Focus and Live Bravely: Discover how to reclaim your true self and remember the good of who you are. Part Three: Liberate Yourself and Unleash Your Joy: Short-circuit your doubt demons and hardwire your mental state to one of optimal joy, positivity, and potential. Petra Kolber has choreographed and starred in over 100 award winning fitness videos on TV, DVD and VHS. She is now an international speaker, author and happiness facilitator. Visit perfectiondetox.com to pre-order the book (release date August 14th) and claim your FREE bonus materials worth $297.

The third practice is Yin Yoga. Yin (soft) yoga, as opposite of Yang (active, strong) offers a slow paced movement and helps press pause on the hyperactive life we are living. Yin and Yang are opposites, yet together they create wholeness while complimenting each other. The yoga postures will be held for short periods of time (2-4 min) with intention to create more elasticity in connective tissue, access deeper muscles, release stress from the body and mind and aid in overall relaxation. With summer comes lots of activities and exuberant energy that needs to be balanced and grounded. It is just as important to take care of ourselves when we feel good as it is when we do not. These three yoga styles (Restorative, Gentle and Yin) are the perfect activity to do just that. Look for these names of yoga at your closest yoga studio. Submitted by Lauren Fuller of Fuller Yoga. Yes, the summer is for fun and family, but it’s also a time to reflect on your child’s prior school year and identify the challenges that need to be conquered in order for their next year to be even better, academically as well as socially. Like most dedicated parents, you’ve probably tried a number of things to help your child but may have never thought about hypnosis as an option. Maybe you’ve even steered clear of it because of some of the common misperceptions about hypnosis. Did you know that your child has been hypnotized thousands of times, and is in fact in hypnosis most of their day? Do you wonder why they sometimes don’t seem to hear you? They’re not being rude, they’re in hypnosis! They have tuned out the external world and are deeply saturated in their own world. Hypnosis is totally safe, as it’s a natural state all of our minds pass through several times a day, and in fact gives us access to our mind’s full potential. Hypnosis has been proven to be more effective with the common childhood struggles than traditional treatments such as pharmaceuticals or conscious level therapies. If your child, or you, struggle with fears or phobias of any kind, lack of confidence, lack of attention or focus, procrastination, video game or phone addiction, emotional outbursts, test anxiety, social anxiety, psychosomatic medical conditions like bedwetting, allergies, stomach aches, headaches or other body pains, poor decision making, impulsivity, or pretty much anything else that’s getting in the way of their best school experience, hypnosis can absolutely help, and kids just love it. To learn more about how hypnosis can help your child, and yourself, go to www.mindmattershypnosis.com. You can even experience a little mini session so you’ll feel totally comfortable giving your child the gift of hypnosis. Free consultations are also available to discuss your child’s unique situation. ave you gone to a Medical Doctor with a health issue and been given one answer as to the proposed treatment? Then you decided that wasn’t what you wanted to do for your health, so you visit a different Medical Doctor and got the same answer? If you’re looking for a different solution you have to seek a different type of practitioner. You can find many diverse practitioners in an Integrated Medical Center, who offer individualized answers to address your particular condition. Most patients start out by taking their case to an MD. When they don’t like the answer they get, they then look for other alternatives. The reality is that “all” medical practices (including MD practices) are health care alternatives that the patient should consider. The patient has to find which alternative is best for them. Take for example, a patient who is suffering from Fibromyalgia. A visit to a Medical Doctor’s office will most likely end with a prescription medication. A visit to the Naturopathic Doctor is going to involve learning about food choices and discovering that what you consume is detrimental to your healing process. The Naturopathic Doctor will also check nutrient levels and look at digestive issues. These doctors will take into consideration all your lifestyle factors such as sleep patterns, exercise, toxic exposure, hydration and so forth. The treatment plans may often include consideration of other treatments not previously considered by the patient. Someone in pain should put Acupuncture at the top of their list as a means of seeking relief. Massage Therapy is also on the list for stress relief, relaxation, orthopedic support and many other physical treatments. As part of the treatment protocol, nutritional supplements may be needed to support the patient throughout the treatment process. An Integrated Medical Center will provide a full complement of supplements for this purpose. In many cases some patients don’t realize their need to talk to a counselor until they begin a complete evaluation of their health issues and realize that their symptoms are not just physical but may be a manifestation of an emotional or stress related trigger. The thought that significant stress may be the trigger for a physical illness doesn’t enter your mind until your physical health is at risk. In an Integrated Medical Center there is also the need to have access to someone that can prescribe a medication when it is necessary as well as to manage pharmaceuticals a patient may already be taking. As the individual begins their quest to become healthier, many alternatives should be considered as they work on getting to their preferred state of health. Why choose an Integrated Medical Center? More choices, more answers, more education, more individualized information. That is really what it takes to maintain good health. Naturopathic physician, Dr. Ann Aresco, founded ProNatural Physicians Group to address obstacles within the current medical environment. ProNatural Physicians Group is a practice of Naturopathic Doctors (N.D.’s) APRNs, Acupuncturists, Counselors, Massage Therapists, and other medical professionals with likeminded practices of preventative medicine and whole body health care. imalayan salt therapy has been around since 1850, and was originated in Poland. Salt particles found in salt caves are known to be anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, antifungal and anti-viral. These elements help to alleviate symptoms related to chronic lung condition, sinus problems, allergies, and skin conditions. Himalayan salt therapy was discovered when a Polish doctor noticed that salt miners had the healthiest lungs, upon further research they discovered that the minerals in the salt caves were preventing lung conditions. Anna Pogoga, the owner of Saltana Cave, struggled with her young daughter suffering from asthma. Pogoga grew up in Poland and practiced salt therapy during her time there. On a trip to Poland, Pogoga decided to have her daughter try salt therapy. After a few sessions Pogoga saw improvements in her daughter’s health and everyday life. Amazed by the results she decided to open her own salt therapy cave in Ridgefield, Connecticut and has been in business for 5 years. Pogoga was inspired to open Saltana Cave by her daughter’s results, her personal connection to salt therapy while growing up in Poland, and the lack of salt therapy in the northeast. Saltana Cave offers services starting at $40 for 45-minute sessions, and session bundles are available. Sessions begin every hour, and appointments are required to prepare clients for their experience. The man-made cave is surrounded by 12,000 pounds of Himalayan salt and inside the cave guests are seated in comfortable chairs and blankets. Saltana also offers a variety of classes, including ‘sound baths’ that include an hour and a half experience where vibrational energy is generated through drums and Native American music guided by spiritual teachers. Classes inside the cave are intended to make clients more comfortable and provide relaxing stimulation. Salt therapy works best when you attend consecutive consistent sessions, results are seen at different times for different people. Pogoga recommends 10 consecutive sessions for clients to see the best results. Saltana Cave also sells salt minerals and oils that clients can take home to further their holistic healing outside of the cave. Saltana Cave is located at 590 Danbury Road in Ridgefield and is open Tuesday through Sunday. For more information, visit http:// saltanacave.com. See ad on page 14.

Explore Culinary Delicacies with Taste of New Haven Food & Drink Tours By Diane Hayden, PhD

O

n a brisk late September day, we excitedly headed to New Haven to do one of my favorite things – a foodie tour! Did you know that New Haven is called the Elm City? Historian Colin Caplan's passion for the Elm City's past has developed into culinary and cultural explorations. Caplan's Taste of New Haven Food & Drink Tours combine history lessons and lots of great food.

Stop #4: Skappo Italian Restaurant. Here we were treated to pasta formaggio and Italian wine. Owned by the Sincavage family – they’ve had the restaurant for over 13 years and their passion for food shines.

On this day, we were participating in the On 9 tour which highlighted delicacies from one of the most eclectic corners of downtown New Haven. Held in and around the Ninth Square, I was amazed to see the plethora of unique kinds of restaurants.

Stop #6: Thali. Sad to say Thali is now closed as of this printing – but it was one of my favorite Indian restaurants. We had a delicious meal of chicken tandoori kabob, samosas and chickpea salad.

Stop #1: We started at the Elm City Market – which I have to say blew me away This place has everything you can think of! We sampled an amazing English cheddar with apple pear jam and a spicy nacho, gluten free cracker. Stop #2: G Café Bakery. A cozy European style café with a fantastic coffee selection. We sampled cranberry walnut bread, Gateaux basque brownie and other French and Italian pastries. Stop #3: Tikkaway Grill. Their claim to fame – Indian food for Americans who “think they don’t like Indian food”. The food was delicious and fresh and you got to assemble your meal – think Chipotle style.

Stop #5: Skappo Merkato. Here we sampled the Sincavage family’s Italian imports – prosciutto with fig and goat cheese on Ciabatta. They even have a family olive oil they import.

Stop #7: Fornarelli. To end this amazing tour, we were treated to lobster ravioli. All of their pasta is homemade and this ravioli was sautéed with an amazing vodka sauce. It sounds like a lot – but after walking for 4 hours all over the city – I’m sure we burned enough calories. The bites were small – just a taste – and everything was exceptionally delicious. All in all this was an amazing, non-touristy, food experience with a fantastic guide who was obviously loved by all of the shopkeepers and chefs. Next time you’re in the Elm City don’t miss it! Did you know? Mulch weighs ~700 lbs per cubic yard. Compost weighs ~1400 lbs per cubic yard. Our Garden Soil and Topsoil Plus weigh ~2,000 lbs per cubic yard. So if you order 3 cubic yards of our Topsoil Plus and distribute that material across your lawn and garden beds, you’ll have lifted three tons of soil!

The 3-Ton Workout: Adding Tone and Definition in Your Landscape By Meredith Sorensen orget lifting weights this summer; grab your shovel instead. My younger self used to scoff at adults when they said they gardened for exercise. “Ha,” I thought naively, “Gardening is just a hobby. Swimming, biking, running and other sports are ‘real’ exercise.” My older, current self – often sore from shoveling mulch or weeding my garden, and often too busy to play sports – would like to gently pat that younger self on the head and explain how common landscaping tasks can serve as training grounds for a fullbody workout. I even checked in with a fitness guru and personal trainer to get details and tips, outlined below.

F

1. Digging and Shoveling. Digging down vertically, lifting your foot on top of a shovel, stepping or hopping on it, and then sinking down into the soil – is like an earthy stair machine. This motion works your quads, hamstrings, and calves. Your biceps and triceps also assist by holding the shovel steady, while your core/ trunk engages to help stabilize the downward motion. Plunging a shovel horizontally into a heaping pile of soil or mulch, lifting up that shovel, pivoting around to the destination, and then tipping that deposit works somewhat different muscles: it strengthens arms, core stabilizers (rectus abdominus “abs”), glutes, hip flexors/extensors, obliques, and spinal erectors (“lower back”). Be sure to hinge with your hips; don’t use your back. 2. Wheelbarrowing. (Yes, I made up that verb.) Lifting up a wheelbarrow is very much like a deadlift, which works your hamstrings, glutes, and lower back. Tipping a wheelbarrow to dump its load engages your grip strength, core stabilizers, chest (pectoralis major, or “pecs”), triceps and deltoids (shoulders). 3. Mowing. With a walk-behind mower you get closer to reaching 10,000 steps (or whatever your goal may be) while tuning up your lawn. Walking works your legs (quadriceps, hamstrings, gluteal muscles, or “glutes”) for power, while pushing a mower activates arms (triceps) and shoulders (deltoids). 4. Weeding. This endless activity can take many forms, and can be an opportunity to gain strength and flexibility. Try bending at the hips and lean into the position for a minute letting your head and shoulders hang low. This will stretch your calves and hamstrings. Another variation is to put your palms on the ground and push back into a downward dog position, which is also a good stretch. Then start weeding. If you prefer to kneel on your hands and knees, try doing some cat-cow poses, arching and flexing your back. There’s yet another option to mix up the monotony of weeding - bust out a one-minute plank pose on your hands or forearms in the middle of your weeding session. This will engage your core muscles as you take a very close look at your greens.

All of a sudden yardwork becomes your fitness friend. Digging, mulching, mowing and weeding will simultaneously tune up your landscape while toning your arms, abs, and legs. Here are some additional tips from my fitness guru: • Develop a mindfulness about body position. • Switch positions frequently to prevent overuse injuries. • Utilize both sides of your body (e.g. shovel, rake) with both arms despite dominant side. • Use a squat (quads, glutes and calves) or hip hinge (hip flexors/extensors, hamstrings, spinal erectors) to pick things up. • Change positions frequently. • Try kneeling or half-kneeling positions with pads. Have fun in your new training grounds. Meredith Sorensen is the Director of Communication for Harvest, a company that fuels a more sustainable world where organic resources are harvested, not wasted. Promoting Healing and Wellbeing One Poem at a Time By Marianela Medrano, PhD

A

visit to the Website of the National Association for Poetry Therapy (NAPT) would tell us that the use of literature, and poetry in particular, as a therapeutic means is not a new concept. The practice goes back to ancient times when the shamans would chant poems for the wellbeing of people in their tribes. Currently, librarians, teachers, therapists, coaches and other professionals are using literature for healing and personal growth purposes. Furthermore, in the second Century AD, the Greek physician Soranus, was prescribing poetry as supplemental treatment for certain mental disorders. The historical foundations of this practice go back to Apollo, the god of medicine and poetry in ancient Greece. Aristotle in his Poetics discusses the role of catharsis in effecting emotional healing. In the United States poetry therapy has been used widely since the 1840s.

Poetry therapy is the intentional use of literature to promote healing and personal growth. The number of studies showing that a writing practice could lead to better psychical, mental and emotional health are increasing consistently. Poetry therapy is an umbrella term for interventions such as therapeutic writing, journaling, storytelling and bibliotherapy. Writing as a therapeutic tool has a multiplicity of purposes including clarification of personal goals, clarification of one’s identity, promoting self-expression and advancing social justice. Despite the paradoxical fact that some poets and creative individuals have succumbed to depression, anxiety and, in some drastic cases, to death by suicide; poetry has and continues to serve as a healing balm to many and as a means to clarify personal and societal values. Practitioners and facilitators continue to show that writing is not hazardous to our health. Rather, it fosters wellbeing and goals clarification so we can move on to take actions aligned with what

matters to us the most. The work of James Pennebaker, a leading researcher in the field of writing as a therapeutic means, shows that even though writing can result in short-term increases in negative emotions, after a while writing for therapeutic purposes is associated with decreased symptoms of depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). His research has also shown that therapeutic writing decreases visits to doctors, physical symptoms of pain and increases the performance of the immune system. In addition, his research has shown how self-expression through therapeutic writing is associated with behavioral changes that improve performance in college students as well as the prevention of absenteeism, both from school and work. Most individuals who write for therapeutic purposes will easily identify the positive impact on their emotional functioning and acceptance of feelings. The use of writing in the clinical setting is associated with a stronger development of self-awareness and problem solving skills. In Poetry Therapy: Interface of the Arts and Psychology, N. Mazza (1999) highlights how the “pluralistic base of poetry therapy” has evolved as research continues to focus on the effects of poetry in different therapeutic capacities. Mazza indicates that in poetry therapy, “clients are not asked to identify the ‘true’ meaning of a poem, but rather the personal meaning”. This approach to literature gives individuals ownership of the piece as they personalize it. This process increases tenfold when the person produces his or her own writing in response. In this sense, poetry therapy as a model has the following components: a) The receptive/prescriptive component, which involves the introduction of a literature piece (poem, fragment of stories, songs, etc.), into therapy.

b) The expressive/creative component involving the use of client writing in therapy. c) The symbolic/ceremonial component involving the use of metaphors, rituals, and storytelling. Through the incorporation of these three components the facilitator is able to address cognitive, affective and behavioral manifestations of the human experience. The three components sited above can be easily incorporated in just about any healing and developmental arena. In other words, poetry therapy is not a stand-alone therapy but an ancillary to other modalities such as psychotherapy, personal development, coaching and education. The cure is partly in the identification with the literary piece and greatly in the sympathetic resonance generated between the literary piece and the recipient. The completion of the healing cycle happens when writing emerges in the voice of the person, speaking very personally. For instance, a person experiencing despair can find some solace, if not a mirror, in which they can see themselves reflected in Emily Dickinson’s “Hope Is a Thing with Feathers.” “Hope” is the thing with feathers That perches in the soul And sings the tune without the words -

Find Love During the Summer Solstice

By Ronnie Ann Ryan

P

eople have celebrated the Summer Solstice for thousands of years. As the longest day of the year (in the northern hemisphere), the solstice has been revered by the Chinese, Mayans, Romans, Egyptians and the Druids among others. For many ancient civilizations, conceiving on this day was considered lucky and was a strategy to increase a baby’s chance for survival by being born after the harsh winter. The solstice was also considered a magical time for singles to meet their mate. As humans, we are not separate from nature and seasonal changes because we are one with everything - the planet and the Universe. So, let’s take advantage of this mystical day by asking what becomes possible from this place of maximum light? One empowering possibility is to rewrite your love story. You can’t change the past but you sure can influence your future! Check out these three life changing steps to rewrite your love story. Step #1 – Review History Review your three most important relationships using these questions:

1. What did I like and what do I not want to experience again? 2. What can I learn from these relationships that I can apply to my future relationship? 3. What role did I play in the relationship not working? Did I pick the wrong guy, hang on when I knew he wasn’t a good match, or put up with poor treatment because I didn’t think I could find a better man? Step #2 - What Attitudes or Beliefs Got in the Way or Sabotaged Your Love Life? You might have ideas about love, men or dating that are not true, yet you operate as if they were. Examine your thoughts about love, men, and dating and challenge your beliefs to see if they truly are valid. Often you can find holes in your process. For example, all the good men are taken is a belief held by many single women over 40. Yet, women fall in love every day so this is not actually accurate or valid. It’s also statistically impossible. You can also test your beliefs with logic to clear out false beliefs.

Natural Nutmeg - July/August 2018

Step #3 – Write Your New Love Story Now that you have learned from your past and cleared the way, it’s time to dream about what you DO want and begin to MANifest that! To create your vision of the right man for you, think about who he is as a person, his values, energy level, interests, and goals. Next decide what kind of love you want – long-term committed but living separately, living together or marriage. Last, but not least, think about the quality of your relationship. For example, is it fun, easy, loving, playful, deeply connected, soul level, active, communicative, etc. This is now your road map to connect with the right man. Think about how you’ll feel with THAT man. Will you feel loved, cherished, blessed, sexy, adored, or lucky? Pick three and use that as an affirmation! For example: With the right man I feel loved, cherished and blessed. Whatever FEELS good for you. Repeat this to yourself as often as you think of it with FEELING to attract him into your life. Don’t forget to take action to meet and cross paths with men so that ideal guy can find you! Meet My Client Cynthia Cynthia had been divorced for 10 years, just ended a five-year relationship and felt unbearably sad thinking she might be alone for the rest of her life. At 59, she thought for sure her age would be a huge problem and men wouldn’t want a woman so close to 60. We discussed what she learned from her marriage and her last relationship. Cynthia realized there had been a lot of good even though things didn’t work out. She also recognized several behaviors she never wanted to be exposed to again.

We worked on her self-esteem, finding numerous reasons why some man in his late 50s to mid-60s would be darn lucky to have her in his life. Cynthia had so much to offer which she’d been discounting due to her age and lagging self-esteem. She started using the affirmation and really FEELING it. Then I wrote her online dating profile and she was on her way. Knowing she had so much to offer took the pressure off and she let go of feeling desperate. She felt free to take her time picking out the right man and not rush into anything. And, that’s exactly what Cynthia did! She told the men she met she wasn’t making any decisions or commitments for at least three months. The eighth man she met was quite taken with her and he wanted her to become exclusive quickly. But, Cynthia held firm to her boundaries and her vision of the right man. And for Charlie, he took Cynthia as a challenge which got his attention. Four years later Cynthia is still enjoying the love life she hadn’t thought was possible for a woman over 60! Once she gave herself permission to rewrite her love story, she found “The One” and is completely thrilled and still gushing about it. ree radicals – you’ve heard about them, but what are they really and how do we fight them? In a nutshell – free radicals are inflammation-causing molecules linked to everything from accelerated aging to cancer. And we create them all day long – when we exercise, engage in movement, even breathe. How do we fight them? Science indicates that antioxidants are nature’s way of counteracting toxic free radicals. Hydrogen (H) is the smallest and lightest element and when ingested acts as a natural antioxidant. You may know Dr. Nicholas Perricone for his amazing skincare line – but now he has launched Dr. Perricone Hydrogen Water, which has quickly been adopted by celebs and trainers across the country.

Studies suggest that molecular hydrogen may improve athletic performance and help promote the production of natural cellular energy.

Look Years Younger and Achieve Robust Wellness with Essential Oils By Lisa Wilson

W

hen I was asked to write an article on natural skin care, I JUMPED on it. Here's why: In the past, having horrible skin was just my 'thing,' and I had accepted this about my appearance. I am not kidding when I say I had skin bumps and lumps SO bad that I used to hide behind my hair. I tried with makeup to cover these purple marbles, but there was really no hiding it. Severe acne really is a skin disease. While staying out of sight as a young woman from ages 13-23, I knew I had something to contribute to the world. Yet, I did not want to be seen, socialize, and the thought of being kissed, well that was a terrifying thought.

I've faced breast lumps, Graves' disease, vaccine reactions with my kids, and for ALL of it I have found solutions to overcome naturally. Impeccable eating comes first, then advanced plant therapies and natural techniques.

I took a lifetime's worth of antibiotics from ages 13-21. Then, I moved to the heavy hitter, Accutane. It's a drug that is so damaging to the liver, and it's so toxic that if a woman gets pregnant while on it, the baby will be severely deformed. At age 21, with purple marbles protruding from my face, I didn't stop to consider the consequences. However, that was not the end of my acne. In my 40's, it turned from acne to ‘back-ne’. I had a back full of these marble lumps. I wore no sundresses, no tanks, and I kept my hair long to cover it all.

The average woman leaves the house every day after applying about 500 chemicals topically to her skin. These chemicals SKIP the built-in filtration process the body brilliantly has, and the chemicals go directly into the blood. This is a BIG problem!

Because I grew up on processed and fast food, I did not develop a strong constitution. Meaning, I was always sick. Since acne, As seen in the New York Times and the Boston Globe

Natural Nutmeg - July/August 2018

We're living in the most toxic era this world has ever seen. Thousands of chemicals are now legal in our food supply, our water is contaminated and so is the very air we breathe. Turning to advanced techniques is no longer optional. It is a must. Let's Talk Skin

My solution is natural products and essential oils. Not only are you skipping the chemicals, but you are also nourishing your skin with some of the most potent, yet well-balanced plant therapies on the planet. The best anti-aging serums come from plant extracts. They have the ability to encourage robust cellular health inside and out which translates into making your skin look years younger. When I was first introduced to essential oils, I was told they were anti-microbial and anti-bacterial. I was told they would be great for acne. I was SO programmed since the age of 13 and always told that I had 'oily' skin, I could not emotionally bring myself to apply oils to my skin. It was counter-intuitive to everything I'd been attempting to do for decades. For decades, I had been trying to DRY UP my oily skin! One day, I brought myself to apply a blend of oils for healthy skin, which included melaleuca oil. To my shock, it cleared up my skin. I started to experiment with other essential oils on my face. Remarkably, they have different properties and are used for different things such as fine lines, collagen support, and robust cellular health. Let’s Talk Daily Routines 7am - Ready for a super cool, anti-aging tip? DON'T wash your face before your morning workout! Use the natural oils you wake up with on your face. Apply directly to your unwashed face 1-2 drops of essential oils, plus 3-4 drops of fractionated coconut oil, which is also anti-bacterial. Best oils for beautiful skin: Frankincense, Myrrh, Immortelle (a beautiful blend of Frankincense, Myrrh, Sandalwood, Helichrysum, Rose and Lavender), Geranium or Fennel. Next, I apply my workout oils! These are some of the best-kept secrets that professional and Olympic athletes are using to improve

circulation and improve breathing during a workout. You can apply Cypress Oil (for circulation) to the bottom of your feet and Breathe Oil (for improved oxygen intake) on your chest. 8:30am - Use essential oil shampoo, conditioner, body scrub and shower gel. My face wash is called Verage. The base is the Immortelle Oil, for anti-aging and beautiful skin. 9am - Before I put on my bra, for optimal breast and lymphatic health, I apply 2 drops of DDR Prime (a blend called Damaged DNA Repair), 2 drops of tangerine oil, and 4 drops of coconut oil. I do this twice daily for breast health. Not only is it great for breast health, but it is also good for cleansing the lymphatic system. During the day, I use oils for improved digestion, elevating the mood (scientifically proven to hit the limbic system and lift the mood), and staying in a state of robust immunity (with my crazy speaking schedule, I cannot go down!). I also use oils for the optimal health of my kids and for a restful night’s sleep too. 9pm - I use an anti-aging cleanser, toner, moisturizer and serum.

10pm - I take 2 Serenity gel caps and apply Serenity oil to the bottom of my feet and pillows. I fill my diffuser with Serenity oil or Vetiver oil, an earth oil also great for sleep. I did not know sleeping through the night was NORMAL until this routine! Now I sleep through the night without waking, which makes for more energetic days. I've never done fillers, nips, tucks and all that jazz. People often guess my age at a little younger than what I actually am. I will turn 50, next year. Sometimes, I get a compliment saying that I have beautiful skin. Admittedly, I still look around in dismay thinking they must be talking about someone else. Maybe, just maybe, I went through my skin issues so that someone else may not have to. Submitted by Lisa Wilson, Health Coach, Owner of The Raw Food Institute, Blue Diamond Leader with DoTerra essential oils, mom to 3 teens with beautiful skin, and all-around natural solutions geek. How to Eat Healthy When Dining Out By Lauren Young, ND & Julia Vitali, ND

E

ating healthy” means consistently making healthy decisions when it comes to your food. The decision process often starts with shopping. Your state of mind at the grocery store will affect your purchases. Feeling hungry or “off” can lead to emotional purchases that you may not necessarily want on your shelves at home. Try making a list (preferably incorporating items discussed below) and sticking to it when you are shopping. Buying locally at farmer's markets or farm stands can also improve decisions. Eating out at restaurants can make “eating healthy” trickier. If not planned ahead, the decision may come down to proximity or emotional state. Creating a strategy will help keep you on track with your healthy nutrition plan. Set Yourself Up for Success Deciding where to dine can dramatically impact the quality of the food you consume. Whether it's a quick grab-and-go or a more refined “farm to table restaurant,” a little planning can change your outcome. The best resource for making a good choice is the internet. Using your browser or a mobile app (such as Yelp or Findmeglutenfree) can direct you to the right location. Most restaurants have menus available online so you can see your options beforehand. Plan Ahead If you know “Tuesday is pizza day at the office” or that everyone is going out for pizza after the game, not having a plan will leave you with no options other than pizza. While the occasional slice might not be a problem, weekly habits can derail your health goals. Rather than feeling deprived or regretful, planning ahead can lead to better choices. Meal planning the day ahead or at the beginning of the week can be an important part of a healthy lifestyle. There are several solutions to the pizza conundrum: • Eat something before you go. It will deter you from unhealthy options and overeating. • Mentally commit to starting with a salad. Then if you are still hungry, be mindful of your portion. • Be aware that the occasional “unhealthy choice” is okay, and if necessary you can plan for it and adjust your other food choices throughout the day. • Give yourself a “reward” for eating well. Treats can help you find motivation for eating healthy. For example, rewarding yourself with a periodic massage may make it easier to turn down an unhealthy dinner option.

Natural Nutmeg - July/August 2018

Mindful Moment The enticement of restaurants not only comes in the food, but also with the ambiance and the company. Prior to making decisions about food, you can take a moment to put it into perspective. Ask yourself these questions prior to ordering or consuming any food: • How am I feeling physically and emotionally? • How hungry am I? • What do I want from this food and this meal experience? • How will I feel tomorrow about this food choice? At its most simple form, mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) nutrition is this mindful moment. Research shows that people maintain and achieve a healthy weight effectively with this MBSR nutrition. Nutrition for its Nutrients There are a variety of diets or nutrition plans out there – each with their own benefits, and it is important to find the right nutrition plan for you. This is can be done with the aid of a physician or nutritionist. No matter what nutrition plan you choose, mindful eating, and being aware of the benefits of each type of food will go a long way. It is easy to get caught up in what you CANNOT eat, instead of thinking about what you CAN eat! It is important to focus on the nutritional value of your food. As they say, “knowledge is power,” so knowing what you may gain from certain foods may make it easier to choose them. Let's look at some important nutrients: • Iron is a key nutrient for carrying oxygen in your blood, making thyroid hormone, and repairing all the tissues in your body. Iron is found in meat and seafood. It is also present in beans and dark, leafy vegetables. Iron is best absorbed with vitamin C. • Vitamin C is important for the immune system, wound healing, removing free radicals (which is both anti-cancer and anti-inflammation) and iron absorption. Sources include berries, citrus, leafy green vegetables, peppers, and melons. • B vitamins such as B12 are important for blood cell and nerve function. Plants do not naturally have B12, but it is found in many food sources such as clams, beef liver, red meat, fish, chicken, eggs, soy bean, and dairy products. • Vitamin A is also known as beta-carotene. It is important for vision, reproduction, and the immune system. Often considered the “orange foods,” including carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, squash, and cantaloupes. Leafy green vegetables are also high in Vitamin A.

• V itamin E is also important to remove free radicals and assist with blood vessel formation. It is found naturally in avocados, fish, leafy greens, mangoes, nuts and seeds.

home) that focus on those foods that will best help you achieve your health goals. To summarize, plan ahead, be mindful of your shopping and eating choices, choose nutrient dense foods, and set yourself up for success!

• M agnesium supplementation has been used to strengthen bones, lower blood pressure, decrease headaches, and for nerve and muscle relaxation. Magnesium is found in legumes, nuts (such as almonds and cashews), seeds, whole grains and green leafy vegetables.

• I odine is a mineral that is important for making thyroid hormones. Earths soil contains varying amounts of iodine. The best source for iodine is seaweed, sea vegetables (kelp, dulse, nori, kombu), but it is also present in fish. • V itamin D is one of the few nutrients that is difficult to get from food. Our bodies produce Vitamin D when our skin is exposed to UV rays. This vitamin is important for calcium absorption and promotes bone strength as well as reducing inflammation, improving the immune system and assisting with nerve and muscle function. It is found naturally in fishes such as tuna and salmon, beef liver, egg yolks, and mushrooms. • A note on fortified foods: Some foods are “fortified” with nutrients. This means the food is enriched to provide additional nutrients to what is naturally there. Typically breads and cereals are fortified with different nutrients. Certain foods such as leafy green vegetables are very nutrient dense. While shopping for home and eating out, it is important to focus on the goal and intention of your meals. Glowing Skin au Naturel By Cait Barbiero, ND

W

e all strive for that dewy, soft, glowing skin that reminds us of youth and vitality. Yet our skin is often dry, blemished and dull. Our skin tone, clarity, hydration and overall appearance is a direct reflection of our health, so it’s worth paying attention to not just for vanity’s sake, but also for our wellbeing. Our skin communicates with us that something is wrong internally, and then sends out a physical signal that requires attention. The good news is that the human body is resilient; its main goal is to heal itself and given some help, it can do just that! Let’s take a look at how Naturopathic Physicians diagnose and treat common skin conditions. Improve the Gut, Improve the Skin The skin is our largest organ, and it gives us many clues as to what’s going on in our bodies. If you want a glowing complexion, let’s first look at the skin/gut connection and how it all works. Naturopathic doctors carefully consider the microbiome, which is filled with a community of microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, and viruses that inhabit our body. Our microbiome is vital for our daily functioning and protects us against germs, breaks down food to release energy, and produces vitamins. An imbalance in our microbiome is often the cause of conditions such as acne, rashes and psoriasis. A good probiotic can work toward balancing out the bacteria in the gut and has a positive effect on the skin. There are also many common food triggers that manifest themselves through the skin. Gluten intolerance can cause rashes and psoriasis, and dairy insensitivity can lead to eczema, especially in children. Naturopathic physicians consider our body’s cues and treat appropriately based on each individual patient and his or her unique set of symptoms. The approach may be to avoid a particular food trigger, while also incorporating more nutritious foods that help to nurture our gut and skin. Our liver and kidneys are closely connected to our complexion. These organs filter out impurities and toxins from the body, so if you are consuming food that requires these organs to work overtime, it’ll show up in your skin with breakouts.

It’s important that Vitamin A is taken under the care of a doctor. In high doses, Vitamin A can be very dangerous and isn’t safe for pregnancy. Caution must be taken to prescribe the right dosage of a medical grade supplement, in this case, typically 25,000 IUs of Vitamin A. Always consult with your ND or functional medicine doctor first. Skincare with Simple Ingredients We’ve heard the advice that our food labels should contain simple, easy-to-recognize ingredients. The same goes for our skincare. The human body absorbs whatever product we apply topically to the skin, which can lead to toxicity, even from brands that claim to be “natural.” The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is an organization that specializes in research and advocacy in the areas of toxic chemicals, agricultural subsidies, and corporate accountability. EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database is a great resource for learning about the safety of a product’s ingredients. They report on a variety of products such as makeup, skin care, sunscreen, hair products, fragrances and products for babies and children. Check out www.EWG.org to learn more about what’s in your cabinet. Natural Products to Try • Herbal products are more powerful than you may realize. Try herbal serums and primrose oil to get your skin dewy and clear. • Moisturizers made from manuka, honey and aloe are wonderful – they are as soothing as they are regenerative. • For a gentle herbal face wash without harmful chemicals, try Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap https://www.drbronner.com. (They also have great lip care products.)

Sugar causes both acne and aging of the skin, so we encourage minimizing processed foods and sugars and focusing more on whole foods. We often need to add in more organic fruits and vegetables, along with foods high in omegas such as walnuts, salmon and flax. Our cells need to be hydrated, so increasing water consumption will help to flush out toxins, and plump up our skin’s surface by filling in fine lines and wrinkles.

• Castor oil is great for detoxifying and for helping drain lymph. Try it on eyelashes and brows to improve hair growth.

Vitamin A

• 100% Pure offers a line of hydrogel sheet masks that hydrate, boost collagen, repair, and brighten. Naturally derived ingredients come from herbs and flowers. 100percentpure.com

NDs will examine vitamin and mineral deficiencies that could be affecting your skin. For instance, if your immune system isn’t 30

operating at a top level –a rash, acne or eczema could present itself. In particular, Vitamin A is vital in this area and some signs that a patient may have Vitamin A deficiency include getting sick often and having a hard time getting over a cold.

Love Those Summer Fruits & Veggies By Nicole Carlone, MS, CHC, CPT-NASM

e all live for convenience especially when it comes to food and our health. Just like the myth that healthy eating is expensive, many people believe that buying in-season fruits and vegetables is just too much hassle. After all, the big chain grocery stores don’t exactly tell you what is or is not in season. So, where do you start? How do you know what fruits and vegetables are in season? Where is the best place to buy the freshest produce? And how do you prepare fruits and vegetables after you buy them? Where to Buy Seasonal Produce The first step in eating seasonally can be as simple as going to your local farmer’s market. But if you’re not sure why you should give up your weekend mornings in search of fresh, seasonal fruits and veggies, here are some reasons why it is beneficial. Nutrition! Plants get nourishment from the sun and soil. Seasonally fresh produce is picked when ripe and fully developed. The plant has had more sun exposure, which means it will have higher levels of antioxidants. Flavor! Freshly picked produce that has been allowed to fully ripen in the sun taste amazing – crispy, fragrant, juicy and colorful. Those summer heirloom tomatoes make all other tomatoes seem inferior. You can eat it like an apple; raw, warm from the sun and straight from the vine. Environment! Seasonal produce can grow without

too much added human assistance (i.e. pesticides and genetic modification.) We know how these toxic compounds can contaminate the water, soil and also our health. Seasonal food is more likely to be locally produced, which reduces the load on our environment due to transport, or “food mileage”. Community! Getting to know where your food is coming from, who is growing your food and how they do it also makes you feel more connected to that whole process. Together, we are more powerful and can facilitate big change.

that come into season like all berries, corn, cherries, cucumbers, eggplant, tomatoes and juicy watermelon. To find out what other produce you can buy fresh simply visit the Fruits and Veggies More Matters website and look under “What’s in Season?”. This website contains a fruit/veggie database in which you can learn how to select and store specific produce and the nutritional info. Educational videos are also provided on how to select and store certain produce.

The next step in eating seasonally is finding the farmers markets! Lucky for us there are some great resources that already have that information listed for us. Visit Connecticut (www.visitConnecticut.com) has a fantastic website that lists farmer’s markets in the state that offer fresh, locally grown food. Another great site is the Northeast Organic Farming Association of Connecticut (www.ctnofa.org/FarmersMarkets.htm), they have a list of farmer’s markets around the state that are separated by county. Both websites list times and locations for each of the farmer’s markets.

There are many ways to prepare fruits and vegetables, below we will discuss some of the healthiest options. Baking! Try slicing some peaches in half, drizzle on some honey and sprinkle with ginger, cinnamon and pecans for a sweet snack! Boil! Apples with lemon juice and cinnamon, mash up and serve warm or chilled. Steam! Try adding your favorite vegetables with citrus juice and zest added to the water to create bold, new flavors; such as grapefruit with carrots. Grill! Peel corn-on-the-cob and coat with a mix of seasonings such as oregano, pepper, onion and chili powder and salt with a touch of butter to help it stick. Wrap in aluminum foil and grill until tender, your taste buds will enjoy that treat!

The Power of the Mind-Body Connection By James C. Brennan

W

e all seek happiness; we seek opportunities to better our lives and reach our goals. But the distraction of our jobs, family responsibilities, and technology can veer us off course. Our perceptions many times blur reality and many of us will choose the fastest and most convenient path to “fix” our daily challenges. As a society, we do not understand how to live authentically. However, to develop authenticity requires deeper awareness. To create permanent change, one must recognize default behaviors that have been developed through our past and earliest childhood experiences. Our perceptions must be scrutinized and addressed so that we do not fall subject to our emotions. Truthfully, we must come to understand our real intentions behind our actions and only then will we begin to live a life of authenticity and empowerment. But how do we make these changes and become aware of our existence? How do we find the path to empowerment? Studies have shown the link between mind and body; that powerful connection that enables holistic transformation. Wherever you look today, you can find a program that “promises” change, yet many fall short and do not address the mind. The program must be built on an authentic platform; the design of it must be genuine in nature. This is the foundation by which people will have the opportunity to experience personal transformation.

The JEKL Experience JEKL is built around the concept of human nature. JEKL simplifies the path for people to maximize their mental, emotional and physical potential in a short period of time. The natural construction of the program is what allows people to experience change. Through interaction with basic elements, exposure to movements that encourage the application of critical thinking, willingness and energy, and coaching that is rooted in human biomechanics and neuroscience, change is inevitable and lasting. You can fool yourself but not the program. With the forces of nature at work you have no choice but to become authentic. JEKL is designed to maximize people’s mental, emotional, and physical potential. The program is predicated on principles that link mind and body with one’s energy. This is achieved by implementing neuromuscular bodyweight training, which is also a catalyst for the Reticulating Activation System, which ultimately effects the brain’s plasticity. The RAS is a toggle switch between your Limbic System and the Cerebral Cortex. RAS switching occurs at one of two times: one, when we become emotionally charged (Limbic System engaged) or two, when we are relaxed (Cerebral Cortex engaged). When we look at specific neurons or neurotransmitters they each trigger certain feelings. Feel good neurotransmitters such as

Dopamine and Serotonin are part of the reward and pleasure center of the brain. These hormones strengthen rationality and emotional resilience as well as personal empowerment and self-esteem; whereas Norepinephrine and cortisol trigger the fight or flight response, and are responsible for increasing stress, blood pressure, weight gain and lowering your immune function. By implementing biomechanics and applied physics, we are able to activate these systems under the guidance of professionally trained staff. Through a series of movements and exercises with gymnastics, the mind and body are engaged simultaneously; this is when change begins. The laws of nature, mass versus gravity, create an authentic perception of intensity. It is this experience which evokes change. JEKL in Action The mind is a powerful tool. Its plasticity allows for true changes in not only behavior but also in physical movement, proving that the mind, when engaged at peak performance, can elicit what some deem to be impossible. I experienced this firsthand when a former client of mine called me one day to say that her husband had been in a horrific car accident while driving his son to school. The catastrophic repercussions, which left him paralyzed from the neck down, also caused mental and emotional trauma for him and his entire family. His wife was desperate to help him and asked me for names of doctors, however, I was unable to refer her to a program or physician. They transferred him to a spinal cord hospital in Georgia where he spent over a year working on his recovery. Within that time frame, he regained severely limited arm function, but these were not the results they were looking for and they returned to Connecticut. Upon their return, his wife

reached back out to me and asked me, yet again, if I had any contacts or references that could help him with his rehabilitation. After telling her that I would rethink my network of medical contacts, she directly asked if I would be willing to work on rehabilitating her husband due to the nature of my program. Having had no prior experience working with individuals with spinal cord injuries, I was hesitant but because of my previous relationship with his wife and the severity of the injury, which had affected his entire family, I believed that I had to at least entertain their request for a meeting. After thorough examination of his extremities, and a clear acknowledgement that he could not feel or move anything from the chest down, I then asked him to think about moving his toes and repeat the action. It was then that I saw an ever so slight movement. I asked him if he could feel the movement, to which he replied, no. Despite his lack of feeling, in that instant, I knew I would be able to get him to walk again. I agreed to work with him and we started Monday. Upon his arrival in April of 2014, and a discussion on mindset, he asked me what my goal was for him. I responded, “to have you walking before New Year’s.” He chuckled and said, “no, really?” To which I responded, “no, really!” With a glimmer of optimism, he said, “okay! Let’s go!” We were able to delve into his recovery, which while exciting to all of us, was quite daunting and draining at times. From the beginning, it was imperative that the atmosphere remain positive, intense and challenging. For months, my partner Brian Pendergast and I were responsible for his physical support, while reminding him to stay mindful about the movements we were putting him through as he was doing them. cognitive awareness with physical stimulation was the link that research had supported, would restore his function. To treat and talk to him like he was the man he was prior to the injury, I believe led to his growth and sustained progress. While being supportive, there were no kid gloves. We forged ahead with sometimes excruciating physical movements, which yielded very empowering and optimistic outcomes. The mental and emotional challenges were great. I cannot begin to fathom what someone is thinking or feeling in this situation and admittedly sometimes lost sight of that in my endeavor to help this man reach his goals. With our unwavering commitment to each other we believed it was inevitable that we would persevere through any challenge. It is with great pleasure and joy that I can say that I watched this man walk out of my door three months earlier than our goal. The power of the mind-body link could not be more accurately illustrated than through this experience. We have the ability to change our existence and live authentic lives, which ultimately creates true happiness. Simply, we need to be willing to become aware of our real intentions. There is nothing better than investing in your own life, which will inevitably leave a positive effect on all with whom you come in contact and help to change our world. Submitted by James C. Brennan (Chris), founder of JEKL, which is an advanced human performance company that uses neuromuscular training and neuroscience as its foundation. Chris has been coaching the minds and bodies of elite athletes for the past 25 years. Through the application of the JEKL3 Formula, which is a set of five principles that link mind and body with one’s energy, he has been able to give individuals the tools to maximize their mental, emotional and physical potential. What sets Chris apart and enables his success empowering others is his innate ability to hone in on an individuals’ mindset and energy. His experiences are vast and range from the professional athletic realm, such as coaching the MVP of the World Series and current and former Olympic athletes, to mainstream America. His approach, which encourages individuals to live their own story and be accountable to it, allows for a personal transformation, a clear path to personal empowerment, if you are willing. Monetize Your Mission By Robin Clare hen I think about my past career in the traditional business world, I have both positive and negative memories. My positive memories are associated with the wonderful opportunities that I had to learn and hone top-shelf business skills. My negative memories spiral around the aggressive persona that I had to maintain to drive projects to successful completion as a female in male-energydominated Corporate America.

W

I found balance for my harder business edge during the work-week by studying spirituality on the weekends. I intuited I had a deep desire to live a more authentic life that intermingled my corporate and my spiritual personalities. The deeper I immersed myself in spiritual pursuits, the more I sensed that my Soul had a unique mission to accomplish by being a bridge between business and spirituality. When I left traditional business to fulfil my Soul’s mission, I left behind what I thought was my aggressive masculine energy. After all, why would I need to hold any aggressive energy in the world of holistic arts? But what I unknowingly left behind was the softer version of my aggressive persona...in other words, my assertive nature. What is the subtle difference between assertiveness and aggression? When operating your own business, you often must be assertive. You must be willing to stand up for your personal value while making a living doing what you are passionate about. How does that fit with the spiritual and wellness communities which thrive on the feminine energy of creativity and collaboration? Often, we see these values clash as many spiritual teachers, healers and wellness providers are not financially successful because they lose sight of their masculine energies.

gifts are “magnificent”? Well, you have honed your craft as you live your extraordinary life journey - of course your work is priceless. Pricing your services is one of the most difficult aspects of moving into your own business. The little secret is that when you place an appropriate value on your work, then the clients who truly resonate with your offering will show up. Paying you your value will become a priority for them to get the results they need. Becoming a successful holistic entrepreneur takes two sophisticated skill sets. The first involves pursuing the knowledge and experience you need to be an expert in your field. The second which often gets overlooked by holistic entrepreneurs is understanding how business works. Make no mistake that you are running a business and there are specific functions you’ll need to learn and do which are critical to your success. The also often overlooked consideration is that these functions can be done by you - but doing them yourself are not the best, most productive uses of your time. As a novice entrepreneur, you may spend up to 80% of your time on administrative tasks and only 20% of your time working with clients. You need to flip these percentages to not only become financially successful, but to also live your life’s highest purpose in service to others. Over time, these excessive administrative activities will truly become a drain on your success.

It’s a rookie mistake for most entrepreneurs in the healing arts to think you can’t afford a business coach, a bookkeeper, an assistant or a marketing person, but, you can’t rise to spiritual and financial success unless you have these key support people. We all need business guidance in our holistic business. Every day, like you, I am faced with the process of valuing my worth, selling my services, managing my business and being present 100% for my clients. Now, I surround myself with a team of experts in the areas that I need help with. Whether you are a current holistic entrepreneur or are contemplating leaving your “day job” in whole or in part to pursue your Soul Mission, I encourage you to pay close attention to setting your value and creating a business structure that will support it. In other words, don’t just work in your business but work on your business every day. Please connect with me to explore how to fine-tune your Soul Mission and to help you create a strategy to monetize your mission. The problem with losing the masculinefocused energy is that it’s this energetic side that draws in all the cash that you need for your business and your life. If your feminine and masculine energies are unbalanced, it’s inevitable that you will not receive your true monetary value for your magnificent gifts. Do you deny that your www.NaturalNutmeg.com

BERNIE

By Bernie Siegel, MD

Understand Why

W

hen I was a young boy several of my friends became seriously ill and one was hit by a car while bicycling to my house. When they all died I asked my father, “Why did God make a world where terrible things happen? Why didn’t God make a world free of diseases, accidents and problems?” He said, “To learn lessons.” I didn’t like that answer and asked my rabbi, teacher and others. They said things like, “God knows, Why not?, Who knows?, That’s life, To bring you closer to God.” Some were honest enough to just say, “I don’t know.” This didn’t leave me feeling satisfied or enlightened. When I told my mother what they said she answered, “Nature contains the wisdom you seek. Perhaps a walk in the woods would help you to find out why. Go and ask the old lady on the hill that some call a witch. She is wise in the ways of the world.” As I walked up the hill I saw a holly tree had fallen onto the path. As I tried to pull it aside the sharp leaves cut my hands. So I put on gloves and was able to move it and clear the path. A little further along the path I heard a noise in the bushes and saw a duck caught in the plastic from a six pack. I went over and freed the duck and watched him fly off. None of this seemed enlightening. As I reached the top of the hill I saw, in front of the old woman’s cabin, a deer sprawled on the ice of a frozen pond. She kept slipping and sliding and couldn’t stand up. I went out, calmed her and then helped her off the ice by holding her up and guiding her to the shore. I expected her to run away but instead of running away she and several other deer followed me to the house. I wasn’t sure why Know Your Soul Mission & Accomplish It

they were following me so I ran towards the house. When I reached the porch and felt safe I turned and the deer and I looked into each others eyes before I went into the house. I told the woman why I had come and she said, “I have been watching you walk up the hill and I think you have your answer.” “What answer?” “Many things happened on your walk to teach you the lessons you needed to learn. One is that emotional and physical pain are necessary or we cannot protect ourselves and our bodies. Think of why you put on gloves and how you helped those animals. Pain helps us to know and define ourselves and respond to our needs and the needs of our loved ones. You did what made sense. You helped those in front of you by doing what they needed when they needed it. “The deer followed you to thank you, their eyes said it all, for being compassionate in their time of trouble. What you have learned is that we are here to continue God’s work. If God had made a perfect world it would be a magic trick, not creation, with no meaning or place for us to learn and create. Mankind is not yet ready for a perfect world. We do not know how to appreciate perfection. Creation is work. We are the ones who will have to create the world you are hoping for. A world where evil is to not respond to the person with the disease or pain whether it be emotional or physical. God has given us work to do. We will still grieve when we experience losses but we will also use our pain to help us know ourselves and respond to the needs of others. That is our work as our Creator intended it to be. God wants us to know that life is a series of beginnings not endings. Just as graduations are not terminations but commencements. Creation is an ongoing process and when we create a perfect world where love and compassion are shared by all suffering will cease.
