Natural Nutmeg July/August 2021
ummer! My favorite time of year. This summer feels even more special because we are traveling again and there are an amazing number of events happening, along with new restaurants, food truck parks , and breweries opening right here in Connecticut. I just love everything about it—warmer weather, fresh fruits and veggies, farm-totable dinners, festivals, and time spent on the beach or at a lake. I’m even growing my own lettuce and tomatoes on my deck! 2021 is bringing a ton of exciting changes to our media platform. I’m thrilled to announce I’ll be launching my own internet radio show this summer as part of the Transformation Talk Radio (TTR) network. TTR is a global positive talk radio and media network that I am honored to be collaborating with, and I’ll be featuring many of our own Natural Nutmeg writers and local practitioners on my show whose voices need to be heard. My show will be weekly on Thursdays at 11am. Visit www. naturalnutmeg.com to sign up for notifications to discover show topics and the fascinating guests I’ll be interviewing. TTR is an internationally syndicated show and broadcast globally on hundreds of AM/FM/digital radio stations. I’m so excited to be broadening our audience globally. Our annual reader-nominated 10Best Awards are right around the corner. They have been a huge hit, with thousands of readers voting last year! It brought a ton of awareness for holistic businesses and we received amazing feedback from the winners and readers. Many business owners in categories like natural product companies, spas, and farm-to-table restaurants said they just discovered the magazine and didn’t realize their customers were avid readers and fans. As a Natural Nutmeg reader, you will have the opportunity to nominate your favorite holistic practitioner or business in 20 categories listed on the full-page ad on the inside back cover. Nominations will take place between Aug. 15 and Sept. 15 through an online survey tool—you can find the link in the ad. Winners will be announced in late September, and we will be showcasing the 10BEST in each category in a special additional issue released in December 2021. I’m delighted to welcome three new members to the Natural Nutmeg/ Essential Naples team: Lori Emelander, Editor; Dr. Sonia Manganello, Marketing Director; and Rob DeSalle, National Sales Director. I am so grateful for this incredible team and each of them brings a wealth of experience and amazing energy to our growing media group.
Last but not least: I’m hoping some of you will join me in South Dakota, July 21–25, at the annual FreedomFest 2021 Summit. FreedomFest is an intense three and a half days, and it’s different from any conference you have ever attended. Where else can you attend yoga in the morning, listen to worldrenowned speakers on finance or geopolitics after breakfast, choose from among a dozen breakout sessions with the world’s brightest thought leaders in the afternoon, watch a movie (and meet the director) during the day, and judge the contestants in an Entrepreneurs’ Competition? Check out my article “FreedomFest 2021” for more information, and visit www.freedomfest.com and enter code Nutmeg50 for $50 off the registration. I’ll be speaking about "The New Psychology of Aging: Living Younger." There are incredible studies being published now about the ability to reverse aging in humans through gene therapy, epigenetic cell reprogramming, inexpensive stem cell treatment, and regenerative medicine techniques like NAD supplementation. I am beyond excited to be speaking at this event and synthesizing all this great information for attendees. Hope to see you there! Wishing you health and happiness,

imberly Schipke, M.S., is a biomedical engineer who has been traveling the world and studying the biofield since 2009. She is the chief scientist at the Biofield Lab (biofieldlab.com), studying physics-based tools to shift the electromagnetics of the human body and atmosphere. She was inspired by Dinshah Ghadiali, who developed SpectroChromeMetry in the 1920s and used light to heal the body in a gentle yet effective way. He would use a green filter and a full-spectrum light to help bring the body back into balance, using green light to balance the cerebrum, which is responsible for movement, temperature, touch, hearing, reasoning, judgment, problem solving, learning, and emotions. Additionally, Ghadiali used green light to balance the pituitary gland, known as the “master gland,” which secretes hormones and controls several hormone-producing glands that can affect a person’s mood and behavior, as well as using green light as a disinfectant, antiseptic, and to help rebuild muscle and tissue. There are zero contraindications for using green light. It acts as an adaptogen—if part of the body is understimulated it can bring the energy up; if part of the body is overactive, green light can bring the energy down. Developed in the 1960s, the laser produces coherent light and the SpectroChrome Laser uses the balancing aspect of green with the coherent light of a laser to help bring balance to not only the physical body but to emotional or electromagnetically charged memories as well. The Energies of Change
T
HWL Expo 2021 will feature on-site health screenings, 85 exhibitors showcasing and selling health and wellness products and services, free yoga, dance and fitness classes led by the area’s top fitness instructors, eight zones showcasing pet wellness; healthy foods; restaurants and beverages; eco-friendly wine, spirits, and craft beers; and a kids’ zone featuring fun and educational activities. his is undeniably a time of change: Change of season, change of weather, change of schooling, change of employment, and change of COVID-19 protocol. With change comes opportunities for growth, healing, celebration, and sometimes grief. To fully welcome change, we must be willing to create space for it to happen. No matter how much we desire change in our lives, the only way to welcome it is to release something else—something that has outgrown its meaning, purpose, or usefulness. Simple laws of physics dictate that no two things can occupy the same space at the same time. We understand this concept regarding physical objects, and we understand that we cannot begin a job without first ending our previous position, but we sometimes fail to apply this to energy. To welcome a new, positive belief, we must first release the one we have outgrown. To welcome healing, we must first release our fear of illness or disease.
This year’s event will celebrate our healthcare and frontline heroes from Stamford Health and essential workers from Grade A ShopRite. Two very special Appreciation Art Murals will be unveiled Saturday morning, providing an opportunity for the public to express their gratitude through personal messages to Stamford Health and Grade A ShopRite for their extraordinary care of the community during the pandemic. A Never Forget 9/11 20th Anniversary Ceremony will take place Saturday, September 11, as well.
Change is rarely easy, but there are techniques that make it easier. Visualizing that of which we are letting go being released through our breath can be effective. Create an image in your mind, see what you are releasing, realistically or symbolically, side-by-side with what you are welcoming. With every inhale through your nose, imagine the new becoming brighter and sharper. With every exhale through your mouth, imagine the old getting dimmer and less defined. Do this until the old image has disappeared completely and only the new is in your vision.
HWL Expo 2021 is hosted by Harbor Point and sponsored by Stamford Health, Key Bank, Cornell University Veterinary Specialists, Sacred Heart University, Stamford Magazine/Moffly Media, The Advocate/Hearst Media Services, News 12 Connecticut, Fairfield County Mom, WEBE 108, Natural Awakenings, Natural Nutmeg, Hey Stamford!, Jen Danzi, Kids Out and About, Macaroni Kid, and City of Stamford, community partner.

THE BUZZ In my world at that time, the idea of the body healing itself simply wasn’t a thing. But now understand that a healthy mind and body heals much more easily from acute illness and tends to get in dis-ease (the hyphen is intentional) less often than an unhealthy one. There are times when the body gets stuck in its ability to heal, which is what causes chronic disease. There are so many wonderful natural practices that can help a body heal, including (but certainly not limited to) counseling, massage, chiropractic, acupuncture, reiki, cranial sacral therapy, mindfulness practices, and well-chosen homeopathic remedies. However, nothing will work long term if there is a maintaining cause. Some of the more common maintaining causes I see in my practice that prevent someone from full healing include:
What’s Preventing You from Getting Well?
G
rowing up, I was fortunate that my pediatrician lived only three houses away. Whenever I was sick, which sadly was quite often, he would come to the house (yes, the oldfashioned house call!) and prescribe some nasty-tasting medicine to help me feel better. Although often I did feel better, I continued to get sick with the same upper respiratory illnesses, flu, pneumonia, and bronchitis, over and over. Needless to say, I saw my pediatrician often and took a lot of medicine. In hindsight, I wish he had been more in tune with a concept I learned about while training to become a homeopath, called “maintaining causes.” These are the things that, when addressed, can prevent the tendency toward illness. In my case, both of my parents were heavy smokers and my bedroom was directly above the living room where they sat at night, watching TV and smoking. Evidently, I was affected by this repeated exposure to the smoke— which I was apparently allergic to—and that affected my immune system, which in turn lowered my ability to fight off disease. My parents smoking continued to keep me susceptible to these types of illnesses. Who knew?

• Undiscovered food sensitivities—especially gluten, dairy, and sugar: If you have a craving for one or more of these and eat a lot of it, consider them strong suspects for sensitivities. A two-week abstinence will help determine if this is indeed a culprit. • Being in a toxic work or love relationship: Being mentally abused and undervalued or feeling helpless or unloved can all create illness in the body. It may be time to reevaluate your unhealthy relationships. • Smoking and/or drinking excessive alcohol: Continually infusing the body with poisons doesn’t bode well for health in the long run. • Lack of consistent self-care practices such as healthy eating, good sleep, adequate hydration, moderate exercise, mindfulness, and so on. What’s in your world that could be continuing your unhealthy state? It may take some time to figure it out but once you do, your body will thank you by healing itself. Abby Beale, CCH, is a certified classical homeopath who wants to be the catalyst in helping your body heal. Learn more about her and homeopathy at www.HomeopathyHealings.com.
FreedomFest 2021: The World’s Largest Gathering of Free Minds By Diane Hayden, PhD
F
reedomFest is an intense three and a half days, and it’s different from any conference you have ever attended. This year’s theme is fitting: Healthy, Wealthy, and Wise—where else can you attend yoga in the morning, listen to world-renowned speakers on finance or geopolitics after breakfast, choose from among a dozen breakout sessions with the world’s brightest thought leaders in the afternoon, watch a movie (and meet the director) during the day, and end the evening with karaoke? Since 2007, FreedomFest has been the leader in the liberty movement to bring together thousands of people committed to freedom—concerned citizens, educators, professionals, business leaders, filmmakers, politicians, celebrities, and policy makers. “FreedomFest is an annual festival where free minds meet to celebrate great books, great ideas, and great thinkers in an open-minded environment. It is independent, non-partisan, and not affiliated with any organization or think tank,” says Valerie Durham, Executive Director. The event was started in 2002 by Durham’s parents—her father had been President of the Foundation for Economic Education, an organization of top think tanks but whose members were not sharing and connecting. “FreedomFest is one place and one time where everyone who cares about liberties gets together and shares about diverse topics ranging from political and economic to health, intellectual, and financial,” says Durham. FreedomFest 2021 will be held in Rapid City, South Dakota, from July 21–25 and includes more than 260 top-ranked expert speakers, breakout sessions, debates, mock trials, Anthem film festival, and over 150 exhibitors at the Tradeshow for Liberty. Speakers include comedian JP Sears; Dave Rubin, host of the Rubin Report; Gov. Kristi Noem
(SD); Larry Elder, host of the Larry Elder Show; Dr. Drew Pinsky; Dr. Jo Jorgensen, former presidential candidate; John Mackey, founder of Whole Foods Markets; and our very own publisher of Natural Nutmeg and Essential Naples, Dr. Diane Hayden. Dr. Hayden's presentation is titled, "The New Psychology of Aging: Living Younger." Mya Olson, founder of Health Freedom South Dakota, is a featured speaker this year at FreedomFest with her speech, “History of the Medical Mafia.” Olson was inspired to create a health freedom organization because she felt lied to by the mainstream medical community. As a result of a vaccine injury, her first child spent over a year on Miralax, an over-the-counter laxative that contains polyethylene glycol 3350 (PEG 3350), which is linked to tremors, tics, obsessive-compulsive behaviors, and aggression in children following its use. Mya has heard countless stories about adults and children being bullied into procedures and dropped from pediatric practices if the parents refuse vaccines. “Why do women no longer have a voice for their children, their parents, or themselves? We are a society that just wants a pill. How did we get here, and how do we get out of it?” asks Mya. Sadly, Mya’s sisterin-law passed away just a few days after receiving the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine. healthfreedomsd.org Jose Luis Cordeiro, author of the book La Muerte de la Muerte (the death of death), is also a featured speaker at FreedomFest 2021. Cordeiro states that by the year 2045, researchers will have figured out a way to not only stop aging, but reverse it. This will result in a huge cost reduction in healthcare, as 80% of one’s medical expenditures happen in the last five years of their life. Cordeiro believes
that everyone has the right to life. “I do not plan to die; I plan to be younger in 20 years than I am today,” remarks Cordeiro. Some of these revolutionary technologies that will extend lifespan include the ability to correct the genome with gene therapy, elimination of zombie or senescent cells that cause aging, inexpensive stem cell treatment, and epigenetic cell reprogramming. According to Cordeiro and other aging researchers, there are four genes that control the aging process. In one study by Dr. David Sinclair, a Harvard researcher, his team of geneticists were able to extend lifespan by two years in mice, which is equivalent to decades in humans. “Once we can reverse aging, it will be unstoppable,” says Cordeiro. “We are truly living between the last human mortal generation and the first immortal generation!” FreedomFest attracts people of all ages and walks of life and across the political spectrum. It’s open to anyone who enjoys a wide interest in books, art, music, film, science, philosophy, economics, health, technology, business, law, politics, and more. This event will revolutionize your perspective, open your mind to new ideas, give you an action plan, and most importantly, inspire hope that our society and world can be a place of freedom. You’ll have deep and meaningful conversations with people you might otherwise never have met, and you’ll leave with an experience you can take forward into your life that you won’t get from social media, a news byte, or a book. For more information or to attend FreedomFest 2021, visit freedomfest.com. Use code Nutmeg50 to save $50 off the $499 regular registration before July 7. See ad on page 3.

Clean Your Tap Water of Toxins and Chemicals By Kenny Lu
C
lean, hydrating water once flowed freely on our planet. It is a gift from Mother Earth and at Spring Aqua, we believe Mother Earth got it right.
According to the Hydration Foundation, a leading research organization focused on actual cellular hydration, 99% of the molecules making up your body are water-based. At Spring Aqua, our goal is to provide water nourishment that is clean of toxins and is hydrating and life-promoting for your body.
Spring Aqua has successfully replicated the process by which plants structure water. The result: One glass of Spring Aqua water may be equal to two or more glasses of typical filtered water in hydration value.
Several world-famous mountain springs attract millions of people annually because of the healing properties of the water. The Netflix documentary Down to Earth features Zac Efron’s and Darin Olien’s visit to one of them, Lourdes Springs in France. Lourdes Springs is home to one of the most celebrated healing shrines in the world, with 4–6 million visitors a year, most of whom seek cures from drinking or bathing in the water.
Our Ecosystem in a Box turns your tap water into water that is clean of toxins and chemicals, hydrating, and life and wellness promoting. Our filters remove all the harmful chemicals and contaminants, but that’s only the beginning. In addition to properly structuring the water, we boost its power by adding dissolved molecular hydrogen, which is stabilized, unlike tablets and ionizers.
Since the late 1800s, scientists have studied these springs, hoping to unlock the mysteries generating the miraculous results noted by visitors. Through mimicking the rock layers, geology, and other properties outlined in scientific studies, researchers at Spring Aqua have developed our own version of the Lourdes water. As a result, we have created what we call the “Ecosystem in a Box”—completely clean water and hydrating technology, the way Mother Earth intended it. Rediscover Real Hydration There are many ways to treat drinking water, such as reverse osmosis, distillers, filters, and bottled water, all ranging in cost and quality. Most focus on purification but overlook an essential quality: the ability to sufficiently hydrate. This is because at the cellular level, the water is not being absorbed as nature intended it. Studies have shown that being just 10% dehydrated can lead to chronic illnesses, and being as little as 2% dehydrated shows a measurable cognitive loss. Real hydration, then, is the fountain of youth and the foundation to health. New research is showing us how the health of our cells is directly tied to the structure of the water inside of them. We’re all familiar with the three phases of water—liquid, solid (ice), and gas (steam). The discovery of structured water introduced a fourth phase, in which water takes on a thicker, plasma-like form. Structured water is only 10% denser but substantially more organized, leading to measurably higher water concentration at the molecular level, allowing for faster and more effective cellular absorption. Research shows the amount of water we drink isn’t the real issue. Anthropologist Gina Bria, Founder of the Hydration Foundation and author of the book Quench, discovered that people living 10
in deserts were often better hydrated than the average American, because they were eating plants to hydrate themselves. How could that be? It’s because the water in the plants is structured by nature.
Natural Nutmeg July/August 2021
Spring Aqua Unique Technology
Structure. Hydrogen. Ionized Minerals. You may notice the similarity between the terms “hydrogen” and “hydration.” This is because hydration is all about getting hydrogen into the cells. The dense, organized molecular structure of structured water is what effectively creates this absorption enrichment. Hydrogen-enhanced water is a powerful antioxidant as well. With our system, one liter of water can be equal to consuming 750 bananas, 35 carrots, and four bags of spinach in antioxidant value. An important element missing in most filtered water systems are important life-enhancing minerals that get stripped out during the purification process. Spring Aqua replenishes them in a bioavailable ionized form. We call our system “WET Technology.” It is an award-winning, eco-friendly product, recognized by WIIPA (World Invention Intellectual Property Associations) and certified by SGS, the world’s largest provider of inspection, verification, testing, and certification services. Our filter certification data is publicly available. WET Technology uses no electricity and no plastic bottles, fits under your sink, and wastes no water. Spring Aqua is the perfect solution for your in-home, healthy water filtration system. Reducing Stress Is the Heart’s Work By Bruce Cryer, President, The Graduate Institute for Holistic Studies; former CEO, HeartMath

ou’ve probably sat through a Zoom meeting and watched a weak presentation, thinking, “What an incoherent presentation that was!” Or maybe you saw somebody mumbling and staggering out of a bar late at night and said to your friend, “That guy is totally incoherent.” Notice how we refer to these scenarios as incoherent. Even if you don’t know the definition of incoherent, you’ve likely figured out that it is used to mean sub-par, confused, disordered, and so on. Lasers create what physicists call coherent light, since the waves and particles emitted by the laser are completely ordered and in sync, flowing in a defined consistent, predictable pattern. On the other hand, regular light sources such as incandescent, fluorescent, or LED lights are defined as emitting incoherent light, since the light waves and particles are not aligned and ordered but rather, they bounce off each other. They do a fine job of illuminating a space, but there’s not much precision. Lasers, however, are capable of incredible precision and effectiveness due to their high degree of coherence. Sophisticated lasers can surgically repair a retina or knee cartilage, along with a host of other remarkable feats. Their exceedingly high degree of order, or coherence, at very low power is their secret. Keep Your Heart in It In the early 1990s, I was part of the founding leadership team of the HeartMath Institute, one of the greatest honors of my life. We were founded by a true visionary, Doc Childre, to understand the true function of the heart in many areas of life: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. In addition to using advanced tools of contemporary science to perform our studies, we created a simple system of tools that anyone can use to create a fulfilling life, led by the heart. Not just a philosophical system, HeartMath is a scientifically validated system of techniques to reduce stress and create increased coherence in all aspects of life.
Most humans are just getting by in life, like a regular light bulb that does a fine job keeping the kitchen bright but eventually burns out. We can get by for a while on innate skills and capacities, but many people are not operating anywhere near their full potential. To put it in this context, most of us are not exactly lasers, producing exceptional precision and power at remarkably low power. In our relationships and in our work, things break down when “our heart is no longer” into that relationship. This is true for athletes, teachers, health care practitioners, accountants, lawyers, doctors, performers, and people of all areas and walks of life. In those early HeartMath days, we asked ourselves, “what if people could be taught to train their systems to be more like a laser—ordered, efficient, precise, and coherent—and less like a lamp light, unfocused, overheated, and prone to burning out? And what if the superpower accessible to each human wasn’t just about brain power, but actually about heart power?” Every day I do practices to help me get into a coherent state, help me stay there, or help me get back to it when my reaction to stress has pulled me out. —Bruce Cryer Why the Heart Matters Our research revealed that when someone is experiencing a depleting, stressful emotion, the heart’s rhythmic pattern is actually disordered, unpredictable, and incoherent. When we’re in a stress state our system is incoherent and inefficient; therefore, more energy is required by the heart and we tire out more easily. However, our research has also discovered that when people experience positive renewing emotions such as gratitude, love, humor, compassion, or peace, the rhythms of their heart become extremely ordered, smooth, and efficient. You are saving energy while your system is being restored. www.NaturalNutmeg.com

Think about it from your own life experience. When you’re stressed out, it can be very draining. Your insides feel chaotic sometimes; certainly not ordered, smooth, and efficient. But when you’re feeling positive emotionally, it’s energizing. Your perspectives are more positive and your energy is much higher. In other words, positivity is not draining; negativity is. Positivity is energyproducing; negativity is not. Focus on the Good—For Good 1414

When you’re in a stressful state, it’s because something is happening in your life that’s not what you want. That internal conflict— worry, frustration, or anger—causes the rhythms of your heart to become irregular and incoherent. Your body is spending a lot of energy to stay frustrated, which is why you’re also so exhausted after a particularly stressful experience. Not only is your heart experiencing the effects of stress, those chaotic, moment-by-moment heartbeats get circulated all through the body, including your brain. Ever wondered why your IQ seems to drop 30–40 points when you’re angry, or why your coordination becomes sloppy when you’re rushing, or why you can’t communicate what you’re trying to say when you’re feeling defensive? Now think about when you’re feeling grateful for something— a sunrise, a kitten, a baby, a friend’s compliment, your health. We discovered that such times allow the heart to start beating in a beautiful, ordered, energy-efficient and coherent rhythm. In those early years at HeartMath, we also discovered you can easily learn to switch out of the stressful, draining incoherent state into a more efficient, fun, and energizing coherent state. A Fascinating Journey into Numerology and Healing By Diane Hayden, PhD
F
rom ancient times, each day of the week has been associated with a planet. The day you were born gives you a special link with the planetary ruler of that day. I was born on a Thursday, which represents Jupiter. Jupiter is the God of the skies and represents everything that is spacious and inclusive; strengths of those born on Thursday are generosity, wisdom, and zest for life. Through ancient wisdoms, numerology can derive a wealth of information about a person based on birth name and birthdate. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Zahid Hossain to discuss numerology and astrology and have an Astro-Palmistry reading. Zahid was born into a noble Bengali/Indian family of Nawabs and several generations of famous healers, astrologers, and palmists. Zahid showed signs of having inherited his forefathers’ intuitive metaphysical abilities early in life, when he gave his first intuitive reading at the age of eight for a young police officer in his father’s precinct. All that he predicted came true. Fast forward many years. The intense pressure of a corporate position caused Zahid to have three heart attacks, and his final wake-up call came when he had a neardeath experience in the surgery required by his last heart attack. His guiding spirits made it clear to him he was to return and complete his life’s mission. My session with Zahid was probably the most accurate reading I have had in my entire life. The amount of information he gave me was incredible, so I’ve tried to condense the things that stood out for me in terms of what I felt truly resonated (not to say other information was not accurate; however, some of it was predicted for my later years).
Life Path Number My birthdate is 2/8/1968, so my Life Path total is 7 (2+8+1+9+6+8=34; 3+4=7). The number 7 means my destiny lies with the mental and spiritual; the path of study and the search for life’s meaning. I couldn’t agree more, considering I pursued a PhD and have an obsession with studying metaphysics and spirituality. Zahid told me a certain degree of solitude is necessary for my development. Again, spot on—I’ve gone on silent retreats and I can always tell when my soul needs alone time. Birth Name Number The analysis of my name was really fascinating, as Zahid explained vowel and consonant totals that correspond to what motivates me, how I relate to others, and what I want out of life. My vowel total is 5, which means I desire personal freedom and the chance to do new things. I’m often bored with routines and love travel because of the change of scenery and situations. Yup—hit the nail on the head there too! I started my own business because the most important thing to me was the ability to have freedom in my work (when and where I work). I’ve lived in many different places (Los Angeles, NYC, Florida, North Carolina, Georgia, and Maryland), and travel…well, don’t get me started. I still have much to do, but I’ve been all over the US, Europe, Hawaii, Caribbean, and did a two-month cross country trip in the west. My consonant total is 11, and I’m shaking my head again because this number has followed me my entire life. I was born at 8:11, got married on May 11, more often than not my hotel room is number 11 or adds up to 11, I see 11:11 or 1:11 on the clock almost daily…it never ends. The
number 11 means that I am an incredible visionary—I can dream of creating a revolutionary new way of life and have visions that many can’t comprehend. I’m pretty good at manifesting these things, too. When I was growing up, my mother would always call me a dreamer because of my wild imagination. My power number (the total of my name and birthdate) is 5. The number 5 signifies a life of freedom, variety, and change. Always open to new experiences, I seek out the curious and unusual—yes, you can find me on a ghost tour in any given city or chasing UFOs in Sedona. I am unconventional, unpredictable, full of surprises, and excel at doing the unexpected. Ask my friends: I’m the one to show up at the door on Halloween in full costume and makeup, toting a pre-made cocktail to share. Or I’m planning a bar crawl with games we have to play or dares to complete to win a prize. Life Challenges Zahid told me about the challenges I will meet in my life and when to expect them. My first minor challenge number is 6, which usually crops up before age 30. The number 6 means I had to shoulder responsibility beyond my years. My father passed away when I was only 27, and I had to help my mother with many things while also dealing with that grief. My second minor challenge number is 2, which relates to aspects of my character I need to work on between ages 35 and 62. With a 2, the task is to develop confidence in myself and build a thicker skin so I can hold my own in relationships with others, and my extreme sensitivity can make me shy away from difficult situations in my personal relationships. I totally agree with both these www.NaturalNutmeg.com

Before my healing, she used a pendulum to measure the flow of energy in each of the energy centers. I was blocked specifically in my throat, heart, liver, neck, and spleen, as well as the sacral and root chakras. This means in past lives or in this life, I’ve experienced the following:
Zahid also focused on my personal numbers for the year—a combination of my month and day of birth and the current year, 2021. So, adding 2+8+2+0+2+1=15; 1+5=6. In a 6 personal year, relationships are a major focus and some adjustments may need to be made. It is time to direct energies toward home, family, and friends. Though some responsibilities may be heavy, meeting them wholeheartedly can add immense emotional richness to life. I’ll have to keep you all posted on how this plays out! Zahid also practices a system that combines Astrology with the perfect place for you to live. I was really curious about this, as I feel like I’ve been searching for that forever. Based on your sign and chart, specific places in the world will be more advantageous for love, career, and health. He told me the central coast of California, Ireland, France, and believe it or not, parts of Africa would be the best locations for me! Astro-Palmistry

Did you know that you carry a coded blueprint of your life on your palm? Zahid’s intuitive ability combined with a mastery of palmistry unlocks this code to uncover your capabilities, talents, potential, and strengths. One fascinating thing Zahid told me from my palm reading was that I was going to write a book—yes, that’s always been in the back of my mind. In fact, I actually have two or three outlines for possible books that I’ve been working on over the years. I’ve always felt like I didn’t know enough or have enough wisdom to write a spiritual self-help book (there’s that lack of self-confidence again!), but Zahid told me that I need to write about my life experiences and how I overcame struggles such as losing a parent at a young age, getting divorced, failing a dissertation defense, and becoming an entrepreneur. I better get to work! Healing the Physical, Emotional, Mental, and Spiritual Body I also had the pleasure of having a healing session with Zahid’s wife, Bunny. It was one of the most loving, healing energy experiences I have ever had. Bunny’s style of healing uses many crystals under the table and on your body and focuses on healing the Physical, Emotional, Mental, and Spiritual energy centers in the body. The Physical
• Throat: suppressed creative expression/limitations • Heart: sadness/feelings of unworthiness/abandonment • Liver: resentment • Neck: threats/no protection • Spleen: anger/guilt • Sacral: disempowerment • Root: anxiety/fear of next steps I could absolutely relate to many of these experiences. Losing my father at a young age and having to be the support for my mother left me feeling unprotected and abandoned. I can also remember those feelings as a child—I was extremely curious and when I was about 4 years old, I had wandered away from my mother in a store to explore. When I went back to where I thought she was, she was gone. She happened to be in the next aisle, but I remember feeling terrified and alone. Even though I started my own business and have taken risks many people would never take, I still have some fear of the future and being successful. For some reason, it’s always been hard for me to trust that I’m making the right decisions. Many times, I look to others and make decisions based on their opinions—which as you can probably guess never works out! I have had to work through a lot of anger and resentment in relationships with family, friends, and significant others. I tend to attract people that want to control me and if I allow it, I feel a deep resentment toward that person. After my healing, I felt a deep sense of relief, lightness, and joy. I felt more confident in trusting my own intuition and inner guidance to make decisions. I am truly impressed by Zahid’s readings and Bunny’s healing, and thankful I was able to work with them to better understand myself and my life’s path. Energy Evolution
By Eilis Philpott, Master Healer and Teacher
I
have witnessed so much shift and change since I moved to the US in 1994, and I count myself lucky and blessed to be part of the global growth and movement into this phase of our evolution.
Beginning the Journey To start this exploration, I want to share my experiences in my home state of Connecticut. In the late 90s, when I first connected with the energy of the state, it felt quite murky and sticky; in other words, there was a need for more light to be brought in and more people to step into their roles in consciousness. There were some pockets of light where groups of people had started working with individual communities and this light was slowly starting to spread. Now when I look at Connecticut I see the density and stickiness has dissipated; there is so much more light and an influx of love and hope to those ever-expanding areas. As with many first-time energy practitioners, I started my training with Usui Reiki level one. Reiki, for me, was life changing and opened me up spiritually and psychically. Back then, in 1994, Reiki was not nearly as well-known as it is today and was considerably more expensive than it is now. The investment to become a master was typically around $10,000. This has changed over the years, and Reiki is much more accessible than ever before. For many people, myself included, Reiki is a gateway to a much broader field of conscious evolution. I eventually became a Master practitioner and have since been initiated into other forms of Reiki. In 1996, I set up my full-time healing practice after completing extensive training in Rebirthing Breathwork. I have had many experiences observing massive and often miraculous changes in people’s lives, I have incorporated additional modalities over the years, and I started teaching. My personal and professional healing journey proceeded over the next 16 years or so, when in 2012 I was guided to close my practice. I worked in corporate America for the next four years and then in 2016, I was ready and revitalized to come back to practice the healing arts professionally again. Highlights of the Shift and Change What I observed when I returned to this world was such phenomenal growth, so many more people aware of their spiritual journey, and so many finally waking up to who they truly are. Along with those shifts, many people were questioning how they operated in the world and whether their career/work served both their own and the greater good. I started teaching again and observed how
energy was so much more attainable by so many more people and how much more quickly downloads happened than they had previously. That short gap of four years truly supported me and helped me to see so clearly how everything had indeed accelerated. I could see how manifestation was happening so much faster. Now, as we make our way out of COVID-related issues, it is clear that we have made a quantum leap and even more people are ready, willing, and able to look at life in a new way. What a way to learn how to pivot, and what a gift! Success Stories As a healing practitioner, I feel it is important to share some of the experiences I have had in being blessed to see those massive and miraculous changes in individuals. Of course, no real names are used here. Joe had come for a session, and one of his goals was to have his own business teaching music. He was employed as a music teacher at a school, but he knew that was not the right avenue for him. After his first session, he quit his job at the school and started offering private lessons to music students. He continued with sessions to ensure he did not self-sabotage his progress and went on to have a very successful venture. Another client, Sally, was working in a factory and knew she didn’t want to spend her last few work years in this unhealthy setting. Sally and I worked together for a time, and she too left her job by taking early retirement. She then started her own healing practice, which is still very successful. Then there’s Gina who, as a single mom, had minimal income from her coaching business and was barely scraping by. After a few sessions she snagged some major, long-term clients and continues to see considerable growth in her business. These are just a very small sampling of what can happen when you decide you are worth spending some time and effort on. And no matter what, when you make that decision, you will live your purpose and watch all the pieces fall into place. Boosting Immunity Mindfully to Beat Stress
By Marie Mammone, ND
I
t’s no secret that stress negatively affects the immune system. Indirectly, stressed people tend to engage in behaviors that have negative effects on the immune system; directly, sympathetic nerves connecting the brain to the immune system transmit signals that hamper immune effectiveness. Chronic stress and resulting inflammation are linked to higher rates of diseases with inadequate immunity responses (infections) as well as excessive immune activity (autoimmune disorders and allergies). Stress is the reaction our bodies have to life events. The hypothalamus, and pituitary and adrenal glands produce hormones to handle the “fight or flight” response. This response is essential to life because it allows us to handle the challenges of our ever-changing world, but becomes a problem when it’s triggered too frequently, putting us out of balance and depleting the body’s reserves. During stress, our brain reacts by sending a message to our adrenal glands, which release stress hormones to mobilize physical, mental, and emotional resources. Cortisol is the key hormone that influences our health because it affects the endocrine system governing metabolism, sleep, mood, and other functions. It also disrupts the digestion, immune, and nervous systems, so restoring optimal cortisol levels is crucial. Fortunately, we have a wealth of natural ways to approach and balance stress. You don’t always have control over what happens to you, but you do have control over how you react, so living mindfully—i.e., paying attention to your thoughts and actions—is important.

And best of all, it’s not that hard! First, allow enough time to properly take care of yourself and build a foundation for good health. Next, find the trigger source(s) of your stress (diet, lifestyle, work, thoughts and feelings, etc.) and take steps to calm and renew your body, mind and spirit. To begin, be kind to yourself! Use the “Big 4” strategies: • Mindful living • Enough sleep • Balanced diet • Regular exercise Mindfulness Mind your focus to manage stress. Focusing on what pleases us is necessary for mental and emotional health. Stay present. Activities that inspire us to smile, laugh, and think positively are beneficial; constant negative thoughts from TV, newspapers, social media, and family issues are not. Choose to “shut off” these voices and seek inspirational outlets to prevent negativity and relieve stress. Sleep The right amount of sleep helps us feel more energetic and better able to cope. Maintain regular bedtime and waking hours, avoid caffeine within 8 hours of bedtime, and refrain from intense physical activity close to retiring. Short naps, 20 minutes or less, can also bring dramatic improvements. Diet Eat a nutritious, whole foods diet to prepare your body for daily stress. Eat when you’re calm and enjoy your food with gratitude.
Drink 6–8 glasses of filtered water between meals to reduce metabolic stress and help maintain regularity. Exercise Move regularly to dispel the nervous tension of stress. Even 10 minutes out of your busy schedule for walking can work wonders. And there’s more! Relaxation techniques, including guided imagery, deep breathing (even a few breaths), yoga, qigong, meditation, and massage can also result in a significant reduction of physical and emotional tension. Effective communication with responding—not reacting—can create instantaneous hormonal shifts, and time management, with thoughtful planning to accomplish tasks while allowing for leisure pursuits or relaxation, are all great stress relievers. When we use the “Big 4” strategies for decreasing stress and managing its causes, we are taking important steps on our path to well-being by keeping our immune system functioning at its best. Difficulty Sleeping? Massage Therapy Can Help By Kristina Mozzicato, LMT, BCTMB
A
ccording to the American Psychiatric Association, sleep disorders involve problems with quality, timing, and amount of sleep, resulting in daytime distress and impairment in daily function. Sleep is a basic human need and is critical to both physical and mental health, and how much sleep we need varies depending on age and the individual. According to the National Sleep Foundation, most adults need about seven to nine hours of restful sleep every night—but many of us get less than that amount. Insomnia and Sleep Deprivation Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder, with more than 30 percent of American adults suffering from occasional bouts. From that, approximately 10 percent of Americans experiencing chronic insomnia, which is defined as poor sleep every night or most nights for more than six months. Sleep helps the brain function properly, and not getting enough or getting poor quality sleep has many consequences. In addition to fatigue, decreased energy, irritability, and difficulty focusing, the ability to make decisions and regulate your mood can also be affected. Sleep deprivation compromises immune function and, if left untreated, increases the risk of developing chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, depression, obesity, and even cancer.
Massage Therapy as a Sleep Aid According to the National Institutes of Health, massage therapy can reduce fatigue and improve sleep. Based on research compiled by the American Massage Therapy Association, massage therapy has been shown to improve sleep in infants, children, adults, and the elderly, as well as individuals with anxiety, depression, fibromyalgia, cancer, heart disease, menopausal symptoms, migraines, arthritis, and lower back pain. These benefits can be linked to massage therapy, as massage reduces stress in the body and stimulates hormones that result in a good night’s sleep. In times of stress, our bodies respond by releasing the hormone cortisol, which negatively affects sleep patterns and decreases the quality of sleep. Massage therapy increases the release of serotonin and melatonin (hormones that allow the body to reset its circadian rhythm). Serotonin, a vital neurotransmitter that is essential to our survival, plays an important role in mood, behavior, body temperature, physical coordination, appetite, and sleep and is necessary for the brain to produce melatonin, which induces sleep. The release of serotonin and reduction of cortisol can also improve mood and reduce stress levels. Added Benefits of Massage Therapy A January 2000 study on back pain conducted at the Touch Institute, in conjunction with the University of Miami School of

Medicine and Iris Burman of Miami’s Educating Hands School of Massage, concluded that in addition to a decrease in long-term pain, subjects receiving massage experienced improved sleep and an increase in serotonin levels. The subjects in this study received 30-minute massages, twice weekly, for five weeks. The results of this study were originally published in the International Journal of Neuroscience in 2001. Researchers at the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil conducted a pilot study to assess the impact of massage on seven post-menopausal women suffering from insomnia. Participants received a 60-minute massage twice a week for eight weeks. At the conclusion of the study, the researchers observed a significant improvement in sleep quality and a decrease in symptoms of anxiety and depression among the participants. These findings were confirmed in a randomized trial carried out the following year. www.NaturalNutmeg.com

DID YOU KNOW THAT
ARE OFTEN THE ROOT CAUSE OF
Pain—whether from an injury, sore back, or achy joints—can prevent you from getting a good night’s sleep. Massage therapy can relieve pain so you can improve the quality of your sleep. In 2012, Time Magazine cited research stating that massage reduces inflammatory cytokines, which are known to cause inflammation and pain. The article asserts that essentially, massage therapy has the same effect as other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as Tylenol and ibuprofen. Decreased inflammation translates to less pain, which results in better sleep. Individuals suffering from insomnia should always consult their licensed healthcare practitioner. For anyone seeking a non-pharmaceutical treatment for improved sleep, massage therapy is a safe and healthy alternative. Ask Dana! Experiencing an Abundance of Cash? Here Are Six Ideas By Dana R. Mascalo CFP®, RLP®, AAMS®, C(k)P®
L
ately, we have been hearing more and more positive financial updates from clients who find themselves with extra cash on hand. In some cases, their growing bank account is attributable to the lack of discretionary spending many of us experienced during the pandemic. Another common instance is small businesses who have surprisingly found that business is booming, and our business-owner clients are seeing record profitability. For still other clients with excess reserves, perhaps it was from a real estate sale or an inheritance. There are countless personal circumstances out there, but the reality is that we have had many clients finding themselves in a more comfortable financial position, who are now wondering what their best options are for that extra cash on hand. Here are some ideas: 1. Pay off debt. Start by evaluating all the debt you have—look at credit cards, car loans, other product finance plans, variable rate HELOCs, and any other loans. Prioritize paying down balances with the highest interest rates first. One caveat here: you may want to pause on paying down student debt until any potential
governmental student loan forgiveness programs are officially ironed out. 2. Refinance where it makes sense. If you have a mortgage or home equity loan/ line of credit, consider refinancing if you can get a lower rate for a similar or shorter payoff term. Work with a credit union lender, mortgage broker, or bank to do a comparison and see if the payments are affordable. There may be a few thousand dollars in fees due if you decide to refinance, so consider this in the comparison and determine where the extra cash may come in handy. If you are planning to move soon, or if you have a great rate already, refinancing may not make sense for you. 3. Make sure you have a comfortable emergency reserve. The financial planning rule of thumb here is 3–6 months expenses, but this should be customized for each person or family. Now is the time to put this money away so that you don’t have to utilize new credit for any unexpected expenses, job loss, or other unforeseen circumstances. A healthy emergency reserve helps increase your financial peace of mind, which is a win–win for your overall health and well-being.
4. Maximize opportunities for retirement savings. Speak to your financial advisor or tax accountant to see if you can contribute more to your IRA, Roth IRA, or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. Consider making a one-time contribution where you can, or even increase your monthly auto-contributions if you feel your state of abundance in cash flow is sustainable. 5. Consider a Roth conversion. This strategy may not be attractive for everyone, but it can be quite compelling for some. The younger you are and the lower your current year tax bracket is, the more this strategy could make sense. The analysis is very individualized, but the basic idea of this is to convert some of your traditional IRA (pre-tax dollars) over to a Roth IRA. You would need to pay income tax for the year in which you convert, and so the extra cash you have on hand could be great for this expense. Once converted, your retirement savings would be within a Roth status, which provides the potential for taxfree growth. It is also very attractive to families who want to transfer wealth in a more favorable tax status. Of course, www.NaturalNutmeg.com

you’ll want to consult with your tax advisor regarding this strategy. 6. Consider building up your medium-term investment bucket. We help clients think of their money in three buckets: cash reserve, medium-term investments, and retirement. Many times, people have cash savings, and then investments in their retirement accounts—but nothing in between. As someone builds wealth, a point is reached where the emergency/ cash reserve is plentiful, retirement accounts are well funded, and the decision is made to invest some of their nonretirement cash savings into other kinds of investments. A taxable brokerage account works well for this and can be customized to your personal preferences. It is my hope that some of these ideas will inspire you to save and promote abundance throughout your financial life! Dependability is vital— s a psychotherapist and relationship specialist, I hear the always showing up, no matter what, without excuse, is another word “trust” quite often in therapy sessions. In fact, lack of expression of trust (and love) in relationships. It may not be the trust is one of the top causes when relationships start to desexiest quality a partner brings to the table, but dependability is a teriorate. Trust is a necessary ingredient for happy and successful relationships, romantic and otherwise. Yet the ability to trust others rock-solid, necessary trust-builder. can be elusive for so many of us and without it, Conflict is inevitable in relationships; even happy, healthy, and high-functioning relationships the most stable, loving partners won’t always cannot be sustained. agree. Conversely, a child whose mother or caregiver is mercurial, unreliable, and apathetic If “it takes two to tango,” it certainly takes two partners to create (and/or neglectful, unkind, or abusive) will more than likely have healthy communication. In many ways, partners are as enmeshed difficulty with trust as an adult. When we have not processed and in each other’s lives as they are in their own. So, How Do You Stop the Bleeding? One word: Therapy. Or perhaps two words: Couples counseling. Whatever you call it, the sooner you and your partner begin working with a therapist, the better. The longer you wait, the more frustration, anger, and resentment will build up, and damaging relationship habits such as arguing, ridiculing, and giving your partner the silent treatment become even more ingrained. Unfortunately, people tend to look at therapy as a last resort or Hail Mary. Couples counseling is an opportunity to learn skills that enable partners to have and maintain healthy and loving relationships. This is especially valuable when life throws inevitable curveballs at us and our relationships. Couples counseling is sought out by smart, sensible people who understand that there are times in life that you need to ask for professional help. If your house burned down, would you buy supplies at Home Depot and rebuild it yourself? Of course not, you would hire highly trained contractors. The same goes for learning how to communicate—we don’t come out of the womb knowing how to communicate; it is a learned behavior. But what if no one ever taught us how to communicate in a healthy way (or at all)? What if our parents did not model a loving relationship with healthy communication skills? How are we supposed to know what that even looks like? Lack of proficient communication skills is not a character flaw; it is simply a skill that no one ever taught you, and that is not your fault. Trust and Communication Live in Every Great Love Story Do you have the kind of loving relationship you always imagined? Is the connection to your partner strong, deep, and alive? Is your method of communicating efficient and productive? If your answer to any of these questions is “no,” you are in good company. “Relationship Communication 101” was not offered in high school. Everyone is worthy of having fulfilling, satisfying, and trusting relationships. Couples who have this type of partnership are each other’s top priority and they are confident that despite hard times and life challenges, they can overcome anything because they have each other. Trusting relationships give us the freedom to live life authentically and to become the best versions of ourselves. If you want to improve the state of your relationship, ask for help and make it happen. You and your partner are worth it. Deborah K. Oh, Sweet Slow Waves of Deep Sleep! A Deep Dive into Dreamland By Tara Tranguch, ND
F
eeling tired today? According to the National Sleep Foundation’s 2020 poll, the average American feels sleepy three days a week, and close to half said this sleepiness impacts their daily activities, mood, and mental acuity. It’s no surprise that Americans are feeling sleepy. The average length of sleep per night is less than six hours, which is far from the recommended 7–9 hours. How many hours of sleep do you average per night? The CDC found that Connecticuters who average fewer than seven hours of sleep a night are more likely to be obese and to suffer from heart attacks, strokes, asthma, arthritis, depression, and diabetes. Yes, there is a correlation between decreased sleep and chronic disease. Sleep is an essential building block in our foundation for good health. What Happens When We Sleep? Truthfully, we still don’t understand why humans—or any animal, for that matter—sleeps. While we sleep, we are defenseless and vulnerable for an extended period of time. Wouldn’t evolution favor creatures that didn’t need to sleep? Yet the human need for sleep has not changed in millennia. Theories about why we need sleep include full body restoration and memory consolidation. Body and brain restoration: Growth hormone secretion peaks during sleep, contributing to muscle growth and cell regeneration throughout the body. This is especially important for an athlete’s recovery time. Brain restoration occurs during deep sleep as
well—this is the only time that neurotoxic waste is cleared out of the brain. If deep sleep is not adequate, the brain’s glymphatic system is disrupted and can contribute to neurodegenerative diseases. Memory consolidation: While we sleep, the brain consolidates memories, promotes synapse formation to consolidate learnings, and maintains cognitive function and memory. Sleep and Our Life Cycle Sleep changes over the course of our lifetime. Babies aged 0–3 months old start their sleep cycle directly in the REM phase, before they have developed their circadian rhythm. Teenagers have a higher percentage of deep sleep. Our sleep architecture begins to change in middle age. As we age, our circadian rhythms of temperature, melatonin, and cortisol diminish and as a result, our percentage of deep sleep diminishes, our REM stage decreases, and our percentage of light sleep increases. Our circadian regulation of sleep and wakefulness weaken, and we experience increased involuntary wakening. As a result, reduced growth hormone and dopamine levels occur, even with healthy aging. The incidence of sleep disorders increases both with normal aging and even further with neurodegenerative disease, including dementia, Parkinson’s disease, Lewy body dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease. Those with mild cognitive impairment have more noticeable changes in deep slow wave sleep, circadian rhythm disruption, and REM sleep. Parkinson’s dementia with Lewy bodies is preceded www.NaturalNutmeg.com

• Caffeine: During the day our cells generate energy, creating the byproduct adenosine. Adenosine builds up in the brain and contributes to our feeling sleepy at night. Caffeine blocks the adenosine receptors, which is one of the ways it helps you wake up in the morning.
Establishing a solid sleep routine and good sleep hygiene is the most effective approach to helping the body maintain a healthy circadian rhythm. Aim to go to sleep at the same time each night, even on weekends, to keep your circadian rhythm in check.
• Alcohol: We may think a glass of wine will help us sleep but when it metabolizes it actually causes sleep disturbances, especially in the REM phase, which shortens sleep. • Lack of oxygen by sleep apnea results in insomnia. People with sleep apnea tend to have REM earlier in their sleep pattern instead of toward the end.
by REM behavior disorder, which is when muscle movement occurs during REM sleep, resulting in hand twitching or thrashing about.
• Movement disorders such as restless leg syndrome can wake you up.
Insomnia and Its Causes Insomnia is the most common sleep problem in adults 60 and older. Insomnia includes taking a long time to fall asleep, waking up in the night, waking up early and not being able to fall back asleep, feeling sleepy during the day, and not being able to fall asleep. There are many factors that impact sleep and can cause insomnia including: • Stress: Increased stress means increased cortisol, the steroid hormone that has an opposing rhythm to melatonin in our circadian rhythm. Elevated cortisol can disrupt our circadian rhythm and therefore sleep. • Hypoglycemia: If you wake up in the middle of the night, it could be due to a spike in cortisol caused by low blood sugar. If this is you, eat a small snack that is high fat with a protein about an hour before going to sleep.
• Working night shifts disrupts your circadian rhythm. • Medications such as barbiturates and other antiepileptic drugs, beta antagonists, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants, and stimulants also delay or suppress REM sleep. Establishing Great Sleep Hygiene Establishing a solid sleep routine and good sleep hygiene is the most effective approach to helping the body maintain a healthy circadian rhythm. Aim to go to sleep at the same time each night, even on weekends, to keep your circadian rhythm in check. Establish good sleep hygiene by incorporating lifestyle changes that encourage you to wind down before going to sleep.
• Excessive warmth: Our body expects the temperature to drop at night, so keep your bedroom cool. • Blue light exposure: Blue light—like the sky!—has wavelengths of 450 nm. This blue wavelength decreases melatonin and disrupts your circadian rhythm. Be sure to block blue light from LED bulbs, TV screens, and your phone by shutting off electronics and shifting light to yellow-toned, low-watt lighting.
Your sleep routine can include: • Hydrotherapy: Taking a hot bath/shower 1–2 hours before going to sleep has been shown to improve deep sleep. • Blue blocker glasses: If you can’t turn off the screen three hours before sleep, use glasses that block blue light to ensure melatonin secretion is not suppressed. • Eat a low-carb, high-fat dinner several hours before your bedtime. Glucose oxidation from carbohydrates suppress slow wave sleep.

• True darkness: Ensure your sleep environment is pitch black. Sunlight and blue light reduce melatonin. • Pink noise played during the first 90 minutes of sleep has been found to slow brain oscillations and increase sleep. Check out the free app Simply Noise. Sleep Supplements If you are following a good, solid sleep routine and still struggle with insomnia, your neurotransmitters may need a bit of help. Supplements to support good sleep include: • Melatonin: Melatonin decreases as we age, so it is especially helpful for age-related insomnia. It also helps with insomnia due to depression, autism, or epilepsy, and helps patients withdraw from benzodiazepine therapy. • GABA: GABA is our main inhibitory neurotransmitter of the CNS. Barbiturate and benzodiazepine medications target the GABA receptor. In my clinical experience, patients particularly appreciate GABA because it doesn’t leave them feeling drowsy in the morning. • Glycine: Glycine is an amino acid that binds to NMDA receptors in the suprachiasmatic nucleus in the brain, which regulates our circadian rhythm. It is inhibitory and helps to lower body temperature, thereby increasing sleep. • Magnesium: Magnesium is a mineral that catalyzes more than 300 enzyme reactions in the body, improving sleep by activating GABA. • Tryptophan: Tryptophan is the amino acid found in turkey that is blamed for post-Thanksgiving feast naps. Tryptophan is the precursor to serotonin, which in turn is the precursor to melatonin. Studies show it has the best results when taken together with B6 and B3. Do not take tryptophan if you are on a MAOI medication. • Valerian root, Valeriana officinalis: This slightly stinky root helps you fall asleep faster and improves sleep quality by affecting GABA receptors. However, it can sometimes have the paradoxical effect of energizing some people. • Hops, Humulus lupulus: Yes, the same hops used to make beer also activate the GABA receptor. I highly recommend hops together with valerian and Passiflora as an aid to helping patients stay asleep. • Passionflower, Passiflora incarnata: This beautiful flower is excellent for quelling cyclical, ruminating thoughts that can deter falling asleep. Take as a solid extract or together with valerian and hops. • Magnolia, Magnolia grandiflora: Magnolia has the compound honokiol that activates GABA receptors and reduces cortisol. Magnolia is also a great immune help against viruses and is therefore useful for insomnia related to viral infections.
The Stages of Sleep Source: Neuroscience. 2nd edition, Purves D, Augustine GJ, Fitzpatrick D, et al., editors. Sunderland (MA): Sinauer Associates; 2001.
Sleep is categorized as rapid eye movement (REM) or non-REM (NREM) sleep. We go from being awake to:
NREM Light Sleep This is 5–10% of our total sleep. In stage I, our skeletal muscles can still move and breathing is at a regular rate. If you wake up in this phase you might not even know you were asleep. In stages II–III, heart rate and body temperature drop. Sleep spindles activate the brain in stage II, which accounts for 45–55% of our sleep. Benzodiazepines increase sleep spindle activity and work at this level.
NREM Deep Sleep Also known as slow wave sleep, NREM deep sleep is stages III–IV. It is characterized by delta waves in the brain and accounts for 15–20% of our sleep. This stage occurs in the first half of the night and is the most rejuvenating and restorative sleep stage. The benefits of deep sleep include growth hormone secretion, which is necessary for building bone and muscle and strengthening the immune system, and for our total brain health. Our central nervous system uses the glymphatic system to remove waste and it is only active to remove toxic proteins when we are in deep sleep. Reduced deep sleep has been linked to neurodegenerative diseases.
REM Sleep REM sleep is marked by rapid eye movements and muscle inactivity (with the exception of eye muscles and the diaphragm). This is the stage associated with vivid dreaming and accounts for 18–23% of sleep. While we dream, we consolidate memories, learning, and creativity. The REM cycles get longer throughout the night lasting from 10 minutes to an hour and is the last stage of sleep. If you wake up in the middle of a dream, you know you were in REM sleep.

Independence and Your Finances By Caroline Wetzel, CFP®, CDFA®, AWMA®
F
reedom and independence are important to us as Americans. As we celebrate these ideals this July 4, recognize that not all financial professionals provide you freedom of choice when it comes to your financial options, nor do they necessarily provide you independent advice that is in your best interest. While many people call themselves “financial professionals,” far fewer have the training, experience, and integrity necessary to advise you on your finances. You or someone you know may have even encountered a financial professional who gave bad advice or took advantage of you and your financial situation. Protect your finances today and every day through accurate information and deliberate action. Following are three things you need to know when it comes to selecting the right financial professional for you. Only Some Financial Firms Are Obligated to Always Work in Your Best Interest All you need to do is search the internet or tune in to your favorite podcast and you are likely inundated with a dizzying array of companies that hold themselves out as ideal firms to advise you on your finances. Quiet the noise with accurate information: Only one type of financial firm, a Registered Investment Advisor (RIA), is obligated to always act in your best interest. RIAs are organizations that have allegiance only to the clients that they serve. They are regulated on the state and/or federal levels and are bound by law to act as fiduciaries to their clients.
What is essential is whether the person providing you the financial advice is a fiduciary—a professional who is bound to legal and/or ethical standards when they work with you.
Typically, RIAs provide highly customized financial advice to individuals, families, and organizations and manage investments that often partner with custodians, or banks, that hold clients’ securities. While the RIAs direct trades in the clients’ accounts at the custodians, clients experience peace of mind that there is some separation between the RIA professionals that advise them on their finances and the institution that safeguards their assets. Only Some Financial Professionals Are Obligated to Always Work in Your Best Interest At your last professional networking event or social engagement, your head may have been spinning after listening to so many people introduce themselves as financial services professionals. The titles they carry may have sounded impressive, too, from Vice President to Wealth Manager, and the organizations they represent may be widely recognized institutions such as banks, investment firms, or insurance companies. However, when it comes to advising you on your finances, professional titles and brand names alone are not what matter most. What is essential is whether the person providing you the financial advice is a
fiduciary—a professional who is bound to legal and/or ethical standards when they work with you. A fiduciary financial professional: • Always puts your interests above their interests. • Discloses any actual or potential conflicts of interest when working with you. • Explains all fees associated with services provided to you. • There are two main types of fiduciary financial professionals: 1.
Professionals who work for an RIA. The individuals are Investment Advisor Representatives, and they follow the fiduciary rules set for them by the state and/or federal regulators that monitor the RIAs that employ them.
2.
Professionals who carry the profession designation “Certified Financial Planner” (CFP). CFP designees have completed extra training and fulfilled experience requirements preparing them to provide advice on investments, taxes, estates, insurance, and retirement. Additionally, CFP professionals follow a strict code of ethical conduct in their practices. The Certified Financial Planner designation is widely recognized in the financial services industry and is regarded as the gold standard in delivering competent and ethical financial plans.
Not All Financial Professionals Provide You Independent Advice Some financial professionals offer you financial advice with a narrow focus defined www.NaturalNutmeg.com
27
by the company that employs them. Other financial professionals claim to provide you independent perspective when you first start working with them. Over time, however, they strive to convert you to a client who purchases only financial products specifically designed and sold by their firm. If you value unbiased financial advice from fiduciary professionals who have access to an array of resources to serve you, an independent RIA may be right for you. Before working with any professional on your finances, be sure to do your homework. Consider taking the following steps before starting any relationship with a financial professional or firm: • Check out the CFP website https:// www.letsmakeaplan.org/ to find a CFP professional near you

What You Should Know About Dense Breasts and Mammography
By April Beaman, RDH, CTT
A
s women, every October we are bombarded with pink ribbons, athletes wearing pink socks, and commercials and billboards telling us to “get your mammogram,” and every year, millions of women are subjected to ionizing radiation—the most harmful type of radiation—as directed by their health care providers. But is mammography the best screening tool for breast cancer detection, especially for those women with dense breasts? What Does It Mean to Have Dense Breasts? If you’re reading this, my guess is that you’ve been told you have dense breasts. What exactly are dense breasts and why should you care? Having dense breasts is very common; in fact, it is a condition in close to 50% of women. If you have dense breasts, you were most likely given that information following a mammogram. While it is not an abnormal finding, nor cause for immediate concern, it can increase your chance of developing breast cancer in the future.
Dense breasts have nothing to do with your bra size or how they look or feel. It’s also not the same as having lumpy (cystic) breasts. Rather, it is the appearance of the tissue on a mammogram (X-ray) that diagnoses breast density. Breasts are comprised of fatty, glandular, and fibrous connective tissue; the amount of each tissue type can vary depending on the woman, as well as her age. Fatty tissue is non-dense and appears dark on a mammogram, while fibrous and granular tissue is dense and appears white. Being told you have dense breasts simply means there’s a higher percentage of fibrous or glandular tissue in relationship to fatty tissue within the breasts. The catch is that having dense breasts makes detecting cancer difficult on a mammogram. Dense tissue appears white and so does cancer; thus, tumors are often missed within the dense tissue. Think of it as looking for a snowball in a snowstorm. Mammography vs. Breast Thermography Mammography is known as the standard of care for breast cancer screenings, but
over the past decade it has been undergoing steady scrutiny. There’s no denying that mammograms have saved lives and are helpful in detecting cancer. However, mammograms are known to be less reliable for women with dense breasts because density decreases the sensitivity and effectiveness of mammography. This can lead to inclusive or false-negative mammograms and may require an additional screening using ultrasound or thermography. If you’ve been told you have dense breasts, it is important that you do not rely solely on mammography to check for breast cancer. Breast thermography is a technology that picks up thermal changes in breast tissue, which are the precursors for breast tissue anomalies that can become cancerous. With thermography, physicians can also detect cancerous processes and tumors in the early stages. Furthermore, breast density does not affect the results or lower the sensitivity of thermography, making thermograms accurate for all women, of all ages, with any breast type—including dense breasts. Unlike a www.NaturalNutmeg.com

mammogram, a thermogram isn’t invasive, the technician doesn’t touch or flatten the breasts, and there is absolutely no radiation exposure. Thermography can also be performed for pregnant women, women under 40 who don’t yet have recommended breast screening options, and women with breast implants. Choosing Breast Thermography Most physicians are more familiar with mammography, and many still believe that a mammogram is the best test for detecting breast cancer early. But in reality, it is not. Studies show that a thermogram identifies precancerous or cancerous cells earlier, produces unambiguous results that cuts down on additional testing, and doesn’t harm the body. When making decisions about your health, including which breast screening is best for you, I always suggest you use your inner guidance to help make the decision. If you feel it’s best to get an annual mammogram, then by all means, continue

Just be aware of the drawbacks and risks associated with this screening. If you prefer to try breast thermography, though, don’t be intimidated or feel guilty if you chose not to have an annual mammogram or prefer to forgo mammography completely. A thermogram can tell you how healthy your breasts are, rather than just screening them for cancer. When done properly, it has the potential to truly detect subtle breast changes and anomalies long before mammography can detect cancer, allowing you and your healthcare

15 Reasons I Won't Be Getting a COVID Shot By Christian Elliot Publisher’s Note: This full article can be found on NaturalNutmeg.com, with links for the phrases in blue font herein, so you can easily do your own fact-checking.
K
nowing how contentious the COVID vaccine issue is, part of me would rather write about something else. The discussion and news on this topic seems so one-sided, though, I feel I should speak up. #1: Vaccine Makers Are Immune from Liability The only industry in the world that bears no liability for injuries or deaths resulting from their products are vaccine manufacturers. Established in 1986 with the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act and reinforced by the PREP Act, vaccine makers cannot be sued, even if they are shown to be negligent. If a company is not willing to stand behind their product, I am not taking a chance on their product. #2: The Checkered Past of the Vaccine Companies The four major companies making COVID vaccines either have never brought a vaccine to market before COVID (Moderna); are serial felons (Pfizer and Astra Zeneca); or both (Johnson & Johnson). Moderna had been trying to “Modernize our RNA”—thus the company name—for years, but had never successfully brought any product to market. How nice (for them) to get a major cash infusion from the government to keep trying. All other major vaccine makers have paid out tens of billions of dollars in damages for other products they brought to market. If drug companies willfully choose to put harmful products on the market when they can be sued, why would we trust any product for which they have no liability? #3: The Ugly History of Attempts at Coronavirus Vaccines In the 1960s, when animal trials were not yet required, scientists attempted to make a Respiratory Syncytial Virus vaccine for infants. When exposed to the natural virus, 80% of the vaccinated infants required hospitalization, and two of them died. For the past 20 years, all attempts to create coronavirus (common cold) vaccines have ended in failure. Animals in those trials got sick and many died, just like those babies in the 1960s, which is why we did not have a vaccine as of 2020. Nor has the mRNA gene-therapy technology been safely brought to market, despite the billions of dollars in government funding.
#4: “Data Gaps” Submitted to FDA by Vaccine Makers When vaccine makers applied for Emergency Use Authorization, among the many “data gaps” reported was that nothing in their trials even suggests the vaccines’ safety or efficacy regarding: •
Anyone younger than 18 or older than 55
•
Pregnant or lactating women
•
Auto-immune conditions
•
Immuno-compromised individuals
•
Transmission of COVID, preventing mortality from COVID, or duration of protection from COVID
#5: No Access to Raw Data from the Trials Would you like to see the raw data that produced the “90% and 95% effective” claims touted in the news? Me too. But they won’t let us see that data. As the BMJ says, something about the efficacy claims smells awfully funny... #6: No Informed Consent What most people receiving the vaccine don’t know is that these products are still in clinical trials, so anyone getting the shot is now part of an experiment. Those who do not take it, like me, are part of the “control group.” Time will tell how this experiment works out. But if the vaccines are causing harm, wouldn’t we be seeing that all over the news? Well, if the adverse events reporting system was working, maybe things would be different. #7: Under-Reporting of Adverse Reactions and Death According to a study done by Harvard, fewer than 1% of all adverse reactions to vaccines are actually submitted to the National Vaccine Adverse Events Reports System (VAERS). While the problems with VAERS have not been fixed (as discussed in a letter to the CDC), at the time this was written, “VAERS data shows 118,902 reports of adverse events following COVID vaccines, including 3,544 deaths and 12,619 serious injuries between Dec. 14, 2020, and April 23, 2021.” If those numbers only represent 1% of the total adverse reactions, that equates to somewhere around 354,400 deaths and a ridiculous number of adverse reactions to date.

#8: The Vaccines Do Not Stop Transmission nor Infection
#11: Fauci Owns Moderna Vaccine Patents
Wait, what? Aren’t these vaccines supposed to be what we’ve been waiting for to “go back to normal”?
Thanks to the Bayh-Dole Act, government workers are allowed to file patents on any research they do with taxpayer funding. Tony Fauci owns over 1,000 patents, including those being used on the Moderna vaccine…for which he approved government funding. In fact, the NIH claims joint ownership of Moderna’s vaccine—which appears a clear conflict of interest.
Nope. That’s why we’re getting these conflicting messages about continuing to practice social distancing and wear masks after we get the vaccine. They were not designed to stop infection nor transmission; they are meant to lower your symptoms. It can’t stop us from spreading the virus, nor can it stop the virus from infecting us once exposed. To get the vaccine is to accept all the risk of these experimental products when at best it might simply lower symptoms? So the next logical question: If the vaccine reduces symptoms, anyone who gets it might not even know they’re sick and be more likely to spread the virus…right? #9: The Overall Death Rate from COVID According to CDC numbers, COVID has a 99.74% survival rate. Why would I take a risk on an experimental product that doesn’t stop infection or transmission to help me overcome a cold that has a 0.26% chance of killing me? But what about the 500,000 plus deaths? That’s alarming, right? #10: The Bloated COVID Death Numbers Never in the history of death certificates has our own government changed how deaths are reported. So, why are we now reporting everyone who dies with COVID in their body as having died of COVID, rather than blaming the co-morbidities that actually took their life? Until COVID, coronaviruses were never listed as the primary cause of death when someone died of heart disease, cancer, auto-immune conditions, or other health problem. To bloat the number even more, the WHO and CDC changed their guidelines so that those suspected, but never confirmed of having COVID are included in the numbers seen on TV daily. According to CDC numbers, only 6% of deaths attributed to COVID are instances where COVID seems to be the only issue. Even if you ignore the bloating, the 0.26% fatality rate is in line with the viral death rate that circles the planet every year.

#12: The Virus Continues to Mutate Not only does the virus continue to mutate, but according to vaccine developer Geert Vanden Bossche, it’s mutating about every ten hours. How in the world are we going to keep creating vaccines to keep up with that level of mutation? We’re not. Given that natural immunity has never ultimately failed humanity, why do we suddenly not trust it? And why, if I ask questions like these, will my thoughts be deleted from all major social media platforms? #13: Censorship and the Absence of Scientific Debate I can’t help but get snarky here, so humor me. How did you enjoy all those debates broadcast on every major news channel? Wasn’t it great hearing from the best minds in medicine, virology, epidemiology, economics, and vaccinology as they debated all the restrictions before they were imposed? Wasn’t it great seeing health officials grill the vaccine makers with tough questions about their products? Oh, you didn’t see those debates? Because they never happened. What happened instead was heavy-handed censorship of all but one narrative. Mark Zuckerberg can question vaccine safety, but I can’t? When did the first amendment become a suggestion? With so much at stake, why are we fed only one narrative? If highly credentialed scientists have differing opinions, I want to hear their arguments and make up my own mind. #14: The World’s Leading Vaccinologist Sounds the Alarm When someone who is very pro-vaccine, who has spent his entire career overseeing the development of vaccines, is shouting from the mountaintops that we have a major problem, we should listen. Geert Vanden Bossche explains how COVID vaccines may be accelerating the virus’ ability to mutate and become more deadly and creating vaccine-resistant viruses, and why we may be looking at a mass casualty event in the not-so-distant future. He also addresses some tough questions and if half of what he says comes true, these vaccines could be the worst invention of all time. If you don’t like his science, take it up with him. I’m just the messenger. But I can also speak to COVID personally. #15: I Already Had COVID I didn’t enjoy it. It was a nasty cold for two days, but I survived. It appears—as it always has—that I have natural, life-long immunity... something not likely to wear off in a few months, unlike the vaccine. In my body, and my household, COVID is over. In fact, now that I’ve had it, there is evidence the COVID vaccine might actually be more dangerous for me. That is not a risk I’m willing to take. Finding Your Life Passion through Spiritual Counseling By Lauri Ingram
W
hat would it feel like to lean into your passion for life? How would it feel to have clarity and confidence as you take the next step on your path? Do you seek connection with your higher self, the divine, your spirit, the universe to know that the answers are within you, waiting to be unlocked at the perfect time? So many of us, at one point (or many points) in our lives, feel lost or unmoored. This is natural in the cycle of our lives and when we feel that way, connecting with our inner knowing we can help guide us through the fog. I like to use the analogy of an onion: our life is a series of cycles in which we peel back the layers as we get closer to our true, divine, authentic self. The Story of Alice I would like to share with you the story of a client, Alice, who came to me a few years ago knowing she needed a change in her life. While not unhappy, nor was she feeling fulfilled. She was recovering from a recent passing in her extended family, a grandfather, and that led her to consider where she was on her life journey. I spent time listening to her describe a longing to hear what her spirit was trying to tell her, but unable to gain clarity on just what that message was.
I am not a medium nor am I psychic, but I am highly intuitive—meaning my soul, my spirit, whispers to me. I believe we all have this voice inside of us and our life is a journey to open to it, to become open to hearing it, feeling it, sensing it. My work as a spiritual counselor and through my other modalities allows me to accompany my clients as they seek their own inner truth. We decide together the path our companionship will take and the modalities we will incorporate. Find Your Joy and Passion After spending time with Alice, we decided that a Crystal Dreaming session could help her connect with that part of her conscious that has messages for her. As a guided meditation, accompanied by a powerful grid of crystals, Alice experienced a journey that connected her back to her childhood. She recalled drawings she had made as a child, and even a book she had written. Recalling these memories brought her immense joy! These recollections were a sign to her that these practices of creating, which she had long put aside, were waiting for her to pick up. As we sat for a while after her session, she journaled. She felt she was being called to write and illustrate a children’s book and she left my office buoyant, feeling she had unlocked the door that now presented

her with the next step on her path. She has since gone on to pursue this passion, as well as other creative and artistic pursuits. Embarking on the path of spiritual discovery, accompanied by a spiritual counselor, director, or companion, is one that continues to unfold in front of us. My work typically evolves over a period of time. While Alice came to me with a specific curiosity about crystals, our work took on a very different path after that session. I have learned that when clients reach out to me, they are already heeding that nudge they need to continue on their spiritual path. I pursued this practice because of the deep and profound change it made in my personal life. I have been blessed with connecting with the perfect spiritual director at the moment in my life when I most needed them. I love how the universe works! Sometimes we just need reminders to watch for the messages and the signs, and to listen. Learning how to be in the in-between points in our lives while spirit is at work is a practice, and one that can be a recurring theme with my clients.

Rolfing Rhymes with Golfing! By Sharon Sklar, BFA, LMT, CAR
I
n 1980, I sat in Dr. Groves’s kinesiology class at Central Connecticut State University, studying the science of human movement with all the jocks. We studied the torque and dynamics of golf swing, baseball swing, and various other accelerated sports actions. Little did I know how important that course would be to me over my forty-year career as Central Connecticut’s only Rolfer. “Only WHAT?” you might be asking… What Is Rolfing? The Rolf Method of Structural Integration, commonly known as Rolfing, is a unique form of healing bodywork. Over a ten-session series, layer by layer, piece by piece, we work on the connective tissue or soft tissue of the body. The goal is to bring the body back to neutral after all the injuries, accidents, and traumas of life. That fenderbender car accident you had when you were twenty and your back hasn’t been the same since. That fall while skiing, that slip on the icy driveway, that corrective knee surgery, or that hip replacement that never gave you back your full, secure range of motion—all because the body’s alignment and balance are out of whack. Not at all like massage, Rolfing is direct hands-on manipulation that works to release the deep layers of myofascial adhesions and thickening that develop
“I was out of options to have my back feeling good again and would have done pretty much anything to alleviate my back pain. I heard about Rolfing and decided to give it a try. Finally, I could play golf again—pain free!” —Jim Abbott, Higganum
after injuries, years of bad posture, or after surgery. At first the injured fascia secretes a gelatinous liquid that allows the body to continue to move. But over time, this liquid begins to dry out and acts like glue. It thickens in certain areas in response to the imbalances to secure the affected area. Layers of muscle begin to stick together, prohibiting proper range of motion and limiting flexibility. Rolfing for Healing The force created by the friction of this specific hands-on pressure creates heat, which then begins to dissolve the gluing of the fascial layers and proper muscular motion is regained. Instead of groups of muscles stuck together and moving as a region, the body becomes free to now experience the specific muscular action of each muscle. The hips move, the waist moves, the shoulders move, the neck moves—all in a synchronized, natural rhythm. Graceful, easy motion is restored.
Dr. Groves’ class was just one of several prerequisite courses I completed before I gained entrance to the Dr. Ida Rolf Institute in Boulder, Colorado. In my quest to study this work that I was drawn to in my early twenties, I have never forgotten the importance of the foundation of movement I learned back then. Over the last forty years, I have used that knowledge every day, helping people re-establish their own body freedom. I have had a series of golfers over the years who have come to me to get Rolfed, received great results, told their friends and then they told their friends. Throughout the spring and summer I see these guys who love the game, live for the game and feel sad when the late fall arrives. One of them, Rob Josephson of Berlin, came to see me back in 2013. He comes in once or twice a year for a “tune-up.” Here’s what Rob had to say: “After over 35 years of playing golf and basketball and working jobs that required either sitting too long or standing too long, my back was wearing out. I had soreness, tightness, pain, and discomfort. I tried several remedies, but none of them worked until a West Coast friend told me about Rolfing. Thankfully, that led me to Sharon Sklar. She told me about the Rolfing way of www.NaturalNutmeg.com

getting through the layers of muscle, tendons, ligaments, tissue, and fascia to allow your body to get back into balance. And once in balance, using stretching and strengthening exercises and ways of life (hydrate!) to keep in balance. Balance is the key to a healthy life—and a good golf swing! I’ve recommended Sharon to five friends, and ALL of them have had tremendous improvement—pain relief, more flexibility, and increased strength. Sharon’s Rolfing treatments will pay huge dividends!” Another client, Frank Roback of Newington, said: “Prior to Rolfing I was always in a golf cart and had pain after playing. Now I walk the course on a regular basis and my recovery time is so much less.” This work sells itself. Forty years of seeing results like these have proven that Rolfing engages people in very different ways. It is an active process with “awareness” homework. We create space in the session by the hands-on manipulation and explain how to embody and recreate those changes, and then you practice what you learned. Change happens over the ten-session series with time to integrate and with the willingness to try something new and different. Learning how to sleep, sit, walk, and stand in a supportive way adds to the freedom of daily movement and especially to the flow of your golf swing! Inquiries are invited. Oral & Dental Therapy Kills Bacteria Quickly
By Steven R. Frank
C
urrent research has demonstrated a strong correlation between oral health and the following health issues: cardiac health, cognitive function, lung health, and cancer. The mouth is a significant entry point to the body and allows relatively unfettered access to the entirety of it. As a warm, moist place with ready access to digestible matter, it is quite a prime breeding ground for bacteria and fungus. These pathogens can then gain access to the blood, the digestive tract, and can be aspirated into the lungs. We are all familiar with the damage they can do to oral tissues and teeth; indeed, oral pathogens can affect every aspect of your physical health. Oral Bacteria and Your Health Not all oral bacteria are bad. According to a NIH study, 500 to 700 different types of bacteria can live in the human mouth. The typical individual will have as many as 300 at any one time. Some of these bacteria help digestion by beginning the breakdown of food; others secrete acids that destroy tooth enamel and connective tissue, causing tooth decay and bleeding gums. It is quite certainly important to limit sugars (or at least sugar exposure time) in the mouth as the damaging bacteria love to eat sugar. But what else can we do? Bacteria protect themselves from the very dynamic and challenging oral environment by producing a biofilm layer. This layer, often called a slime layer or an oral biofilm, is a polysaccharide matrix that helps them stick to surfaces and repel the agents of your immunity system.
Bacteria can hide out in the pockets around teeth where your toothbrush can't reach, and feed on gum tissues and degrade enamel. For normal maintenance, you can rinse and swish with an EASC once a week for five minutes after brushing to maintain a healthy oral balance.
Regular brushing breaks down this layer, but it grows in places that can be impossible to reach with your brush. Oftentimes, these oral biofilms will hide out in the jaw pockets around teeth, where the bacteria will then feed on the gum tissues and secrete damaging acids that degrade the enamel of the teeth. Oral and Dental Therapy Solution Recent research done at University of Florida Academic Health Center in Gainesville, Florida, demonstrated that this biofilm can be penetrated and eradicated with an enhanced aqueous silver colloid (EASC). In fact, in a laboratory model without mechanical brushing action, this Oral and Dental Therapy demonstrated more than a 95% reduction in mature, three-day-old bacterial biofilms. In clinical application and field testing, swishing with the Oral and Dental Therapy solution stopped numerous occurrences of bleeding gums and infections in cracked teeth in one day.
Of course, if you have a cracked tooth, an extraction is necessary. Preventative– aggressive rinsing before the extraction will limit the number of bacteria that can land in the new empty socket. Then, after a clot has established in the extraction socket (usually 12 hours), gentle rinsing will maintain antisepsis during the healing process without antibiotics. Always rinse with an EASC before and after going to the dentist. Even a routine cleaning can damage tissues, which creates entry points for bacteria to cause infections. Additionally, probing below the gumline pushes bacteria into a region where they can proliferate with impunity. Home Care and Maintenance For normal maintenance, you can rinse and swish with an EASC once a week for five minutes after brushing to maintain a healthy oral balance. This regular maintenance will reduce the extent of biofilm bacteria and slow the formation of dental plaques. Since it will attenuate the fauna and flora on the tongue, it tends to reduce halitosis (bad breath) as well. Canker sores, oral herpes, and thrush can also be addressed in much the same manner. Although these are viruses and fungi, the same active agent, an EASC, works quite well at inhibiting viral replication. In the case of canker sores and oral herpes, exposure time is the key. It takes longer exposures to inhibit viral replication, so it is best to swish the EASC around the mouth (and hold it in the problematic area) www.NaturalNutmeg.com

for 10 to 15 minutes. This should be done several times during the day. With this one simple tool—an EASC such as “Oral and Dental Therapy”—you can handle many oral issues without caustic and harmful chemical mouthwashes or antibiotics. You can care for your mouth safely and naturally. "I was having issues with a swollen and bleeding gum after flossing. After using Oral & Dental Therapy for as little as 3 days, my gum healed and there was no bleeding at all. My dentist was amazed!" – Diane Hayden Steven R. Returning to Work: New World, New Rules, New Opportunities!
By Sandi Coyne-Gilbert
W
e all remember when it happened. One day, you were knee-deep in a rinse-and-repeat style of life, and the next, you could not go to work—not just you, but nearly everyone. The world shifted on its axis, and we became a world in waiting. We waited for direction, a vaccination, and a chance to see a simpler tomorrow. Without knowing what lay ahead, we moved forward in careful, calculated steps.
Make Mental Health a Priority
Now, we prepare to undertake the next daunting task: returning to work. From colleges to corporations, we can use our newfound knowledge to help us move forward. Following are a few actions to make this transition truly effective for those who report to us and work alongside us.
This past year has been marked by a dark theme: times of taking. Whether the senseless taking of lives by systematic racism or a global pandemic that took, again and again, most of us have not successfully processed these losses. Now is the time for leaders to stop the stigma and support mental health initiatives. Through access to behavioral health specialists, community organizations, EAPs, and support groups, employees can receive help navigating their way to the next new normal.
Create a Calm Atmosphere
Strengthen Social Interaction
Even for the most stalwart of employees, returning to the office is challenging, fraught with new waves of worry and the possibility of returning home yet again. The pressing questions in employees’ minds are precisely where leaders should begin. At the forefront of the conversation, leaders need to ask what safety means to individuals and promote the idea that protecting people is pivotal. Create a space where people can be heard. Be prepared not to have all the answers. Assure that safety is part of the reopening plan and that employee well-being is the center of everything.
The loss of connection has haunted all of us as we struggle to gain control over the familiar feeling of loneliness. As socialization increases, it’s up to leaders to build back the bonds that have been broken. Although there is no manual for moving forward, no one should pretend that people can easily resume their lives in the workplace and community. The pain we have suffered has hit us where it hurts most: our humanity. Leaders must remember that there is no perfect solution as we work diligently to reopen a new reality. We all are reinventing the world, the workplace, and ourselves. It is going to take commitment, patience, and time to make this work.
Update Policies and Procedures Remote work is no longer thought of as a fantasy or an employer’s worst nightmare. Even so, in many cases policies relating to working from home either do not exist or are tremendously outdated. Exert effort in reworking those procedures—craft policies around PTO, vaccinations, work expectations, and what defines a sick day. Leaders must also prepare for those employees who would prefer to continue to work from home. Approach every procedure as another opportunity to tell people how important they are and support them every step of the way. Promote Flexibility and Patience Many of us have endured traumatic experiences in the past year or so, and it’s possible some employees are not as ready, willing, or able to return to the office as they thought. People need to see work as a flexible culture that welcomes them wherever they are in the moment. If someone isn’t ready to come back to the office, how can you support them and what they need to be productive? Perhaps promote a gradual return to the office, allowing those who
42
can’t wait to come back to do so immediately while others enter on a rotating basis. If you promote a philosophy of people first, you will see your employees excel even more in your industry.
