PUBLISHER'SLETTER

M

y grandmother once gave me a very precious piece of wisdom. After listening to me complain about how long it was taking for me to finish my dissertation, she said, “You kids nowadays expect things to happen overnight. In my day, we took our time and found joy in mastering a craft. Let it take as long as it takes, you’ll learn something from this experience.” From her valuable insight, I came to realize that anything worthwhile in life requires time, patience and persistence. Patience is indeed a gift. It helps us to deal with frustrations and failures without losing our vision or becoming irritated and depressed. It helps us reduce stress and maintain a sense of calmness when we encounter unexpected situations that upset our schedule or require us to wait for something. These situations give us an opportunity to practice disciplined patience. Unfortunately, in our society today, we are accustomed to instant gratification and we demand it. We are used to getting what we want, how we want it, where we want it, instantaneously. We have high speed internet, instant messaging, one hour photo, movies on demand and online shopping. We have 24 hour grocery stores and dry cleaners that also deliver directly to our door. If you live in the city, you have anything you want at your finger tips every minute of the day from restaurants to fitness centers to convenience stores and more. It’s no wonder why we expect whatever we want to materialize instantly. Although it may seem wonderful to have all of these conveniences, they come at a great cost to everyone in society. Modern conveniences allow people to pack more into their life, but they are losing patience in the process. We all have managed to compress time to such an extent that we are now painfully aware of every second that we wait for anything. The next time you or someone you witness has to wait for something, watch the reaction. It probably won’t be pretty. We will experience much more success when we are patient with ourselves and others. Think of it as an opportunity to reflect on where you are now and how far you have come. Sometimes we find that situations that require us to be patient are invaluable opportunities to realize that we are on the right path or the wrong path. It is a chance to take a step back and make changes to ensure we are on the right path before we reach our destination and realize that we don’t really want to be where we ended up. Examining nature is a great way to observe patience. It takes time for things to grow, mature and reproduce. You don’t see nature struggling against the natural course of time to speed things up. It is a beautiful unfolding of things occurring exactly when they are supposed to.

Nutmeg “Nuggets” Not for Women Only! Natural Alternatives for Treatment of Menopause and Andropause

A

s we age, hormone levels decline for both men and women to less optimal levels. One fundamental principle in improving quality of life and increasing longevity is optimizing and balancing hormone levels. Two keys to achieving optimal health are exclusively using hormones that are biologically identical to those produced in the human body, and ensuring proper balance between complementary hormone systems. Today there is a great deal of attention to women’s health issues and rightfully so. But very often, men’s health issues are forgotten or ignored. Declining hormone levels in men after the age of 45 result in “andropause”, which has many of the same symptoms and health risks as women. Below is a comparison of the signs and symptoms for men and women: Estrogen/Progesterone Deficiency Symptoms Water retention, bloating, weight gain, breast tenderness, sweet or chocolate cravings, mood swings (anxiety, irritability), heavy, light, or prolonged bleeding, hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, depression, loss of libido (sex drive), fatigue, loss of elasticity of the skin, wrinkles, urinary frequency or incontinence, vaginal dryness causing discomfort or pain, bone loss/osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and memory loss. Testosterone Deficiency Symptoms Fatigue, mood swings and depression, hot flashes, decreased muscle strength and tone, increased abdominal fat, muscle and joint aches, arthritis, cardiovascular disease, decreased libido and impotence, loss of elasticity of the skin, wrinkles, prostate enlargement, urinary frequency, impaired carbohydrate metabolism (diabetes), impaired fat metabolism (hyperlipidemia), and bone loss/osteoporosis.

Note that many of these symptoms are similar. That’s because these hormones serve similar functions for men and women. For instance, natural progesterone has been shown to arrest and even reverse bone loss by stimulating osteoblasts, which build new bone and increase both bone density and strength. Testosterone serves a similar function in men. Yet the importance of these endocrine deficiencies are vastly under-recognized, particularly andropause. Remember, hormonal action takes place at the cellular level, so deficiency of a hormone affects every cell in the body. The effect on the organism is depletion of available reserves, decreased ability to cope with stressors, impaired function of cells and organs, and chronic illness. Fortunately, there is hope to retain vitality and promote longevity. Natural, bio-identical hormonal replacement therapies and herbal remedies provide benefits with fewer side effects than prescription drugs and synthetic hormones. While the loss of hormones with aging is a “normal” process, there are significant reasons for taking hormonal replacement therapy. First, the treatment of symptoms can improve the quality of life dramatically. Secondly, in both men and women, replacement of the naturally occurring hormones can help in the prevention of cardiovascular disease, memory loss, and osteoporosis resulting in a longer and healthier life. Center for the Healing Arts, PC Robban Sica, MD received her doctorate from the Medical College of Ohio. Her background study includes holistic medicine, anti-aging, natural hormone replacement and endocrine problems, nutrition/vitamin supplementation including natural alternatives to medication, allergies, and environmental medicine, heavy metal toxicity using natural and chelation therapy, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and treatment of chronic illnesses.. www.centerforhealingarts.com See ad on page 31.

Cicatricial Alopecia and Hair Loss

I

f your hair could talk what would it say? Hair provides us with vital signs everyday and if you want your mane to remain at it’s best, be sure to pay attention. Although some signs are less obvious, there are those that you simply can’t ignore. Severe itching, burning, pain, head blisters and small patches of hair loss are amongst the few that need immediate medical attention. If you or a loved one has experienced any of those symptoms, it may possibly mean you’re dealing with Cicatricial Alopecia.

What is Cicatricial Alopecia? Cicatricial Alopecia is recognized as one of the more severe disorders to cause hair loss in women. Of the many types, Cicatricial is one of the more rare forms, occurring in up to 3% of hair loss patients. Also known as “Scarring Alopecia”, the common effect is the destruction of hair follicles, which are then replaced by scar tissue. How do you find out? Making an appointment with a trichologist is the first step. With a full consultation that consists of scalp analysis and PH Check, a trichologist will be able to examine your scalp under a microscope for signs of deep scar tissue and/or symptoms of follicle destruction. Thanks to today’s advances in science, you can remain hopeful. There are a number of treatment options and alternative solutions available just for you. To find out what your hair is saying to you, request an appointment @info@mcbridehair.com for a consultation with the trichologist, United States Trichology Institute board member, Donyelle Mcbride. Naturally Sweetened Dairy-Free Frosting Using Maple Cream By Ayelet Connell-Giammatteo, PhD, PT, IMT,C

S

ummer is just around the corner! With this change in season, there is the arrival of beautiful fruits and vegetables. In Connecticut, we are very lucky to have an abundance of Community Support Agriculture (CSA) farms or co-op farms that we can belong to. Two examples are Holcomb Farm in Granby and Urban Oaks Organic Farm in New Britain. Often at these farms, you can pick up specialty items. One particular favorite of mine is maple cream. Maple cream (also known as maple butter) is when maple syrup is heated, cooled and stirred to create an amazing and delectable spread. Maple cream can be used for a myriad of things, but my all-time favorite is cake frosting. As the rise in food allergies and food sensitivities is upon us, being dairy-free is becoming more common. Because of my own children and their particular dairy sensitivities, I was forced to explore other options for birthday cake frosting (and of course frosting for other events!). Here is an incredibly rich and delicious dairy-free frosting that is naturally sweetened. When you make the frosting, it is helpful to frost your cake right away before it thickens slightly and becomes more difficult to spread. If it does thicken before you are done frosting your cake, then just turn the mixer on again and you may choose to add a little more milk substitute also. Amazingly, this chocolate frosting does not impart an overt maple flavor which is what I have found as well when I have used maple syrup to sweeten my baked goods. Though it’s expensive, it has a lot of great health properties such as minerals. Enjoy! 10

Natural Nutmeg - June 2015

Ingredients: • 10 ounces Maple Cream (if not available at your local CSA, you can order through amazon.com) • 1/4 + 1/8 cup raw unsweetened cacao powder • 1 tbsp milk substitute (rice milk, hemp milk, coconut milk, other) • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 1 pinch of sea salt (because everything is sweeter with a pinch of salt!)

Directions: 1. Add all ingredients into mixer. 2. Mix on low initially to incorporate ingredients. 3. Once gently mixed, scrape down mixer, and mix on high until fully incorporated and has glossy texture. 4. Can add more cacao powder or more milk substitute to attain optimal density.

Strong Like A River

R

iver paddling is a full-body workout with a mighty partner. You can go down to a river purely for peace of mind if you like. Fish, drift on a raft like Huckleberry Finn, or sit and watch morning mist rising. The river offers a break from everyday pressures, a sojourn in a simpler world. In fact the whole ambiance is a bit different from, say, your typical fitness facility. But don’t be fooled. Take to it with a canoe or kayak, and a river will put you in great physical shape too. It’s free. It’s low-impact. And it accommodates every athletic style from easy-going to epic. If you’re going to try the Huck Finn approach to mental and physical well-being, great! Just remember that a river demands respect. For novices, it’s best to find the right stretch of river, good instruction, and some experienced paddling companions. My brazen bias in this article is that the Farmington River offers the best opportunities to get your feet wet, whether you’re a first-time paddler or an expert. But choose the river that’s best for you. They all need champions. A true beginner can get a great start in Collinsville, where the Farmington River is impounded behind a historic industrial dam and you can try out canoes and kayaks from the nearby Collinsville Canoe and Kayak store. If your skills are on the tippy side, this is the place to be. The expert instructors at CCK offer courses and classes for all ages and skills. They’ll have you maneuvering like a duck in short order.

Huck Finn Adventures Family Canoe & Kayak Trips

And instruction is worthwhile. You’ll learn to handle your craft deftly and safely, and your physical workout will be better and safer too. Paddling is aerobic exercise that can be paced according to your fitness. But beyond that, some people are surprised to find that paddling is not just upper-body work, as it might at first appear to be. It’s a whole-body workout that doesn’t have to over-tax any one area. Your legs, actively pushing against contact points inside the boat (especially in a kayak), brace you and thus allow your torso to rotate properly. As your torso rotates, your back, lateral, and abdominal muscles do much of the work of the paddling, so your arms don’t take all the strain. Maneuvering the paddle requires push-pull and rotational actions of arm and shoulder that encourage mobility and are a great workout for upper arm, shoulder and chest muscles. When mastering fine control of the paddle, your forearm and hand muscles become strong and coordinated without resorting to an exhausting tight grip. Since all this happens in a rocking craft on moving water, it’s excellent for developing balance too. And it feels just great! For practice on flatwater in the Farmington Valley, Colebrook River Reservoir (Colebrook), West Branch Reservoir (Colebrook/ Hartland), and Lake McDonough (Canton/New Hartford) all offer lake paddling in forested surroundings. Also, the river mainstem itself has a reach of several miles between Avon and Tariffville known as “the Bathtub.” It’s almost entirely flatwater and fairly slowmoving. Sometimes the Bathtub’s current is even sluggish enough for paddling upstream as well as down. (But even the Bathtub can be hazardous when the current is fast. Check the flow before you go.) The Farmington River Watershed Association offers easy trips on this reach every summer, and canoes or kayaks are supplied if needed. Tours can also be booked with Huck Finn Adventures.

Natural Nutmeg - June 2015

If you are ready to try your skill on the Farmington’s milder rapids, go upriver to the Farmington West Branch, whose 14 miles have well-deserved status as a national Wild & Scenic River. You can paddle from just below Colebrook River Reservoir, through People’s State Forest, and all the way to New Hartford. Craft rental is available at Main Stream Canoe in New Hartford. Be aware that this is a prime trout fishing area and observe river etiquette when navi-

gating past anglers: be quiet, friendly, slow, single file, and keep a safe distance. Also be aware that non-expert paddlers should exit the river before the gorge known as Satan’s Kingdom. The most challenging part of the river is Tariffville Gorge, where the Farmington River runs through Talcott Ridge in East Granby and Bloomfield. National whitewater competitions are held here every year, and draw the best whitewater paddlers from Canada and the U.S. Warning to us mortals: Do NOT try this run unless you are an expert whitewater paddler with experienced companions! DO come and see the annual Triple Crown whitewater competition held in the Gorge each spring. And whenever you want a workout to refresh mind and body—do remember the rivers. For more information about paddling routes, check the Farmington River Guide online at: http://frwa.org/river-info/ recreation-info-maps/ For information about river flows, check links at: http://frwa.org/river-info/river-flowsforecasts/ See ad on page 12.

We Have Been Conditioned to Have Poor Posture! By J. Brendan Ammann

B

eginning at birth, we intuitively know about natural movement and begin to develop the musculature to propel us upward and outward into the world. We spend the first months creating the natural curves of our spine that we need for longevity. But as soon as we start to explore our surroundings, we unconsciously start to develop bad habits due to environmental and technological body positioning, such as being plopped in front of a television, playing video games, sitting at a desk at school, driving in a car, sitting in front of a computer at work, sitting in the waiting or examination room at the doctor’s office, sitting at a movie for entertainment, sitting to rest or relax, sitting at the beach, etc. We have the opportunity to sit just about anywhere and when there’s no place to sit, we might question why and even become offended. We sit so much that we compromise the four natural curves in our spine (cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and sacral) and unknowingly begin to develop poor posture. It is not that sitting is bad or that we shouldn’t be doing it; however, it takes practice and instruction to sit without slouching or doing harm to our body. It is necessary to put our bodies into better positions while sitting in order to improve our posture and to promote proper body movement. If we continually do something improperly, we will develop pain and/or inflammation in our body. This pain may be a symptom of an acute or chronic problem that is caused by a simple misalignment of the body. We must listen to what our bodies are telling us to make our lives easier. We must teach the benefits of good posture and habits to everyone including our youth in order to avoid unnecessary stress on our spinal cord. We must realize and promote self-healing. The Posture6 helps us to maintain a healthy, neutral posture by realigning the spine. It connects our shoulders to our back, lifting our chest, engaging our abdominal muscles, while neutralizing our hips and aligning our pelvis. Realignment of the spine helps to alleviate a multitude of aches and pains, reduces stress (physical, emotional, mechanical), and reduces wear and tear on the body by promoting better balance and proper movement. Improving the natural curves in our spine helps our body to absorb impact and have better range of motion. Posture6 provides constant feedback so that we feel changes in our body tension. With this awareness, even while sitting, we can cause our muscles to relax, reduce pain, and develop new muscle strengths and skills.

14

Natural Nutmeg - June 2015

Improving our posture, especially when we are sitting, will help to relieve back, neck, and shoulder pain, stress or tension headaches, forward head posture and many other chronic problems. The Posture6 cues us to maintain good posture while sitting and promotes flexibility and improved mobility of our musculature by relieving the tightness and pain caused by poor posture. When we are young, our bodies heal quickly. As we age, our bodies are not able to repair as quickly, and the constant tension from years of poor posture begins to take its toll. We must start putting our bodies into better positions in order to repair, even when sitting. Removing stress from our joints and musculature will help to restore balance and begin the repair process. Posture6 begins the healing process by balancing the musculature and relieving pressure/impingement on the nerves. With this decreased pressure on the nerves and joints, our body can finally begin to heal and repair itself. As we sit behind the computer or in our cars, we are not aware of our stress, breathing, or how stiff we are. This lack of movement causes muscular fatigue. The Posture6 helps us to restore flexibility, creates better balance, teaches us how to coordinate movements from our center, and restores efficient and functional movement. Wearing Posture6 allows us to practice better posture while sitting and restores energy by making movement more efficient. Posture6 reminds us when we are slouching and helps us develop better movement to energize and revive our life. The Vitality of Movement By Craig Fasullo, ND “I know I need to exercise more. It’s just so hard to find the time.”

I

hear this in my office every day - and I totally get it. So many of us are overextended at work and overwhelmed at home. There’s always something or someone else to take care of, and so often the first things that fall away under times of higher stress are those that keep us feeling good in the first place – the activities of “selfcare” – exercise, eating well, and generally making time for those things that bring joy and peace of mind to our individual lives. And so I find it well worth the time with many patients, who are coming in for a broad variety of health concerns, to brainstorm ways to get regular activity into their daily routine. Truly, I cannot stress enough the importance of moving your body. There is not a pill on earth that is as effective in combating such a wide range of negative health effects, while simultaneously promoting an equal diversity of positive benefits. It’s not quite a cure-all, but it’s pretty close. “Inflammation” has become a buzzword in the health literature over the past number of years, and for good reason. So many of the chronic conditions that affect our culture - high blood pressure, diabetes, elevated cholesterol, heart disease, arthritis, autoimmune diseases, and even cancer – have a significant inflammatory component. This inflammation can express itself in both subtle and debilitating ways. Fortunately, there is an empowering message here - anything that reduces overall inflammation will reduce the risk and propensity for all of these conditions. In fact, much of the work we do as naturopathic doctors focuses on this particular avenue of treatment – we get the inflammation down! And as you can probably guess, one of the most powerful ways to lower inflammation is regular activity and exercise. It’s worth noting that inflammation is not always a bad thing. The acute inflammatory response is a vital and beneficial component of the body’s defense system, keeping us healthy on a 16

daily basis. If you slice your finger open while cutting vegetables, inflammatory proteins & immune cells move to that affected area to thicken the blood, allow it to clot, form a scab, and generally reduce the possibility of infection. A similar process occurs with blunt trauma, such as a sprained ankle. In that case, the swelling acts as a natural cast, while the body gets to work repairing the damaged tissue. Unfortunately, under the wrong conditions, these beneficial processes can work against us, as years of accumulated damage increases the level of chronic inflammation in the body. So how does it all work? Research is still being done to fully determine the physiology behind exercise’s beneficial effects, but some things are clear. The human body is constantly producing a myriad of particular proteins called cytokines. These molecules are involved in dealing with infection, trauma, immune activity, and inflammation. There are some cytokines that are promoters of inflammation, while others are anti-inflammatory in nature. Often in cases of chronic disease, inflammatory cytokines are elevated, and some medications to treat these conditions actually work directly on reducing those levels. Fortunately, regular daily activity modulates cytokine activity in all the right ways. Anti-inflammatory molecules increase and pro-inflammatory molecules decline. This has far reaching positive effects throughout the entire body, even as far as improving mood and reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety. Of course, in addition to regular exercise, there are many other ways to lower levels of chronic inflammation in the body. The kinds of foods we eat on a daily basis have a significant impact on cytokine production and inflammatory levels. In addition, there are genetic components, environmental factors, and many other potential causes to consider when addressing a complicated chronic disease process such as heart disease or high blood pressure. Consulting a physician is always the best approach, but certainly, getting a bit more movement into your life is going to get you progressing in the right direction.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that there is a lot of research being done regarding the effects of exercise on the immune system. It shouldn’t come as too much of a shock that it really helps! Exercise increases a number of different white blood cells that are necessary to fight off infection. It also decreases levels of particular stress hormones that can have a detrimental effect on immune function, though, it’s important to remember that moderation is usually best. Too much vigorous exercise can exhaust the body, making it more susceptible to infection. For most folks, a good starting goal is at least thirty minutes of activity, at least five days per week. Keep in mind that exercise does not just have to mean going to the gym. There are plenty of other ways to incorporate that movement into your daily life. If you are starting from scratch, consider parking further away from the store, or always taking the stairs. Walking, cycling, racket sports, golf (walk the course!), yoga, or other movement and stretching classes are just the tip of the iceberg. The most important thing is to find the activity that makes you happy while doing it. That way while you are lowering inflammation and increasing immune function, you are also increasing your overall joy. It’s a win-win! If you suffer from an inflammatory condition, have issues with immune function, or just want to stay well, consider consulting a naturopathic physician who can help you make the right choices about activity, diet, and other lifestyle factors that lead to a healthy life, as well as examine your individual need for other anti-inflammatory support. There are even inflammatory markers in the blood that can be tested to track your progress over time. Today is the perfect day to take a step forward toward a lifetime of feeling better! Bug Bites, Tick Bites, and Bee Stings: What Every Parent Should Know By Robin Russell, ND

I

t’s that time of year again when the days are longer, weather is warmer, and the kids go outside to play. It’s also the same time of year that bugs, ticks and bees like to share the same outdoor space. Bites and stings can be an unfriendly experience but should not deter you from allowing your children to play outside. It is possible to allow children to play outside without fearing that they will get bit or stung. Being educated on bite and sting prevention, what to look out for, and how to treat it may help put your mind at ease. Mosquito Bites Prevention: 1. Clothing Barrier: Keep skin covered with long sleeves, pants, and socks when outdoors during peak mosquito activity 2. Avoid Peak Mosquito Activity: Dusk to dawn, cooler times of the day and shaded areas 3. Insect Repellent for outdoor use a. CDC recommends repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, and some oil of lemon eucalyptus and para-menthane-diol products. b. Research studies have shown that oil extracts of citronella, eucalyptus, lemongrass, cinnamon, rosemary, wintergreen, lavender, thyme, peppermint, and geranium are as effective as commercially available insect repellents. There are many all-natural commercially available products with these oils in them on the market now. Health Concerns: 1. Secondary Bacterial infection (from scratching): Local tenderness/pain, redness extending around bite, small bumps around bite, weeping around the bite area, honey colored crusting 2. West Nile Virus (Flu-like symptoms in the middle of summer): Fever/Chills, fatigue/weakness, muscle aches and pains Bite Treatment: 1. Keep fingernails clipped short to reduce risk of scratching and bacterial infection 2. Ice pack to bite 3. Calamine lotion 4. Over the counter oral antihistamines 5. Topical antihistamine 6. Baking soda paste to bite area 18

7. Homeopathic Urtica and/or Ledum 8. Calendula and Comfrey salve to bite area 9. Tea tree oil topically 10. Apple cider vinegar applied with cotton swab 11. Black tea bags applied to bite 12. Peppermint leave crushed and applied to bite 13. Aloe applied to bite 14. Potato Poultice: Grated potato placed in gauze and applied to bite Tick Bites Prevention: 1. Avoid Contact a. Wear long sleeved shirts, pants tucked into socks, rain boots b. Keep grass and shrubs trimmed continuously throughout spring, summer and fall c. Avoid wooded and bushy areas d. Walk in center of trails 2. Perform daily tick checks after outdoor activity (especially the head) a. Bathe or shower after outdoor exposure to wash off and easily find ticks 3. Treat family pets routinely with flea and tick medicine and perform routine tick checks on them after outdoor exposure 4. Tumble dry exposed clothing in dryer 1 hr to kill any remaining ticks after outdoor activity 5. Insect Repellent for Outdoor Use a. CDC recommends insect repellents containing 20-30% DEET on exposed skin and clothing for protection that lasts up to several hours. They also recommend 0.5% Permethrin on clothing, boots, and tents. b. Studies have also shown efficacy in oil extracts of clove, citronella, lily of the valley, geranium, cedarwood, neem, eucalyptus, peppermint, and lavender in tick prevention. There are many all-natural commercially available products with these oils in them on the market now. Health Concerns: 1. Lyme Disease a. Early Symptoms: Target or Bull’s Eye rash, Flat or Raised red bite, flu-like symptoms (Fever, fatigue, joint/muscle pain, headache, stiff neck)

b. Delayed Symptoms: Painful swollen joints, heart problems, neurologic problems, eye problems, severe fatigue c. Treatment i. Prophylaxis (Given within 72 hours of tick removal) 1. Antibiotic: Usually single dose 2. Remember to take your probiotics when taking any antibiotic! ii. Treatment (Duration and choice of Antibiotic therapy depends on stage of Lyme Disease) 1. Antibiotics 2. Don’t forget your probiotic! 2. Babesiosis a. Symptoms: Flu-like Symptoms (Fever, fatigue/weakness, joint/muscle pain); gastrointestinal, respiratory, urinary symptoms, or neurological symptoms b. Treatment i. Combination Antibiotics x 10 days 3. Ehrlichiosis a. Symptoms: Flu-like Symptoms (Fever/ chills, muscle pain, headache); rash on torso; gastrointestinal or respiratory symptoms. b. Treatment i. Antibiotic x 14 days Bee Stings (Bees, Wasps, Hornets, Yellow Jackets) Prevention: 1. When drinking sweetened beverages outdoors, wide open cups allow you to see if a bee is in it 2. Tightly cover food containers and trash cans 3. Clear away garbage, fallen fruit, and dog or other animal feces 4. Wear close-toed shoes when walking outside 5. Avoid wearing brightly colored clothing which can attract bees 6. Keep windows up while driving 7. If bees are flying around you, stay calm and walk slowly away from the area. Do not swat at the insect. Ask child to, “be still like a statue and the bee won’t know you’re there”. 8. Avoid fragrances (hair sprays, soaps, lotions, and oils) Health Concerns: 1. Local Reaction: Redness, swelling, warmth, tenderness/pain, and/or drainage at bee sting site. May develop hives without systemic reaction. 2. Systemic Reaction: Difficulty breathing, swelling of the tongue/mouth. May develop hives.

Treatment: 1. Local Reaction a. Remove the stinger (Honeybee) as quickly as possible. Be careful not to squeeze the sac when removing stinger. b. Elevate extremity to reduce swelling c. Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) d. Ice packs e. Analgesics (Tylenol, Ibuprofen) f. Homeopathic Apis, Ledum, and/or Arnica g. Rescue Remedy h. Apple cider vinegar cotton swab to bite i. Calendula and Comfrey salve j. Crushed Marigold (Calendula) flower applied to bee sting k. Potato Poultice: Grated potato placed in gauze and applied to bee sting 10 min (will draw out the poison and relieve the sting) 2. Systemic Reaction a. Epi-Pen injected into lateral thigh (if you have on hand) AND Call 911 Create a “Summer-time” basket with the medications, homeopathics, and botanicals listed to have on hand during the summer months. Bites and stings are usually situations where it calls for immediate attention. Having treatments on hand, utilizing prevention tips, and knowing what to look for can help ease your concerns of allowing your children to play outdoors. It’s important to encourage outdoor activity not only for the myriad of health benefits but also for your child’s connection to nature. The Truth about Male Infertility By Dr. Shaun Williams, MD, and Carolyn Gundell, MS

A

dvances in infertility medicine and treatment are bringing hope and success to infertility patients. And yet the biggest challenge to a couple’s fertility is lack of knowledge. Most people do not realize how common infertility is; it affects one out of six couples. And for those having trouble starting a family, infertility affects men and women at equal rates. Therefore, it is important for male partners to realize that they are essential to a couple’s fertility and successful reproduction. Below we examine some of the most common myths and truths about male infertility. Infertility is a Woman’s Issue: MYTH Infertility affects couples, not just women. Approximately 40 percent of the time, the male partner is either the sole cause or a contributing cause of a couple’s struggle to have a family. Male infertility can be a result of producing too few sperm, a high percentage of abnormally shaped sperm (sperm morphology), sperm that do not move properly (motility), sexual dysfunction or a blockage in his reproductive tract that prohibits release. If a couple has been trying unsuccessfully for one year to get pregnant (or six months if the woman is over 35 years old), both the man and woman should see a fertility specialist for diagnostic testing. Couples should seek information even earlier if there is a concern about sperm production or other problems with sexual function. For men, this includes sperm analysis and a complete medical history. Age Doesn’t Affect Men’s Ability to Have a Family: MYTH While many men have been able to have children in their 70’s and 80’s, age is a factor in men’s health and fertility. Sperm production is driven by testicular health and testosterone levels, which decline as men age. Sperm quality begins to deteriorate by the age of 40 and significantly after 60 years of age. It is well documented that men as young as 40 are less fertile than their 20-year-old counterparts. Age does affect a woman’s egg much more significantly, but men who want children later in life still need to protect their fertility by staying in good overall health. 20

Natural Nutmeg - June 2015

Men Are Constantly Creating More Sperm: TRUTH Unlike women who are born with a set number of eggs for their lives, men make new sperm throughout their lives. However, basic sperm formation takes about 74 days and it takes an additional 12 to 21 days for the sperm to mature, acquire the ability to move and to be fertile. A man’s physical health and his lifestyle habits such as diet, exercise and exposure to pesticides, chemicals and drugs can affect the health and fertility of his sperm. Eating Steak Will Provide Virility: MYTH Steak and other proteins that are high in saturated fats can lower fertility by increasing body fat and in turn lower estrogen and testosterone. Excess weight is related to lower sperm counts and motility, lower testosterone levels, and therefore decreased or diminished fertility and sexual functioning. Obesity and excess weight can lead to metabolic health conditions such as pre-diabetes, diabetes elevated cholesterol and hypertension, which can cause erectile dysfunction. In addition, men should also avoid processed grains, added sugars, and hydrogenated oils (trans fats). Fruits and vegetables should be low in pesticides. Good nutrition supports healthy sperm. Men can improve and maintain their sperm quality by including whole grains, plant proteins, lean meats, fish, legumes, fresh fruit and vegetables, and heart-healthy fats in their diets. Key nutrients are the antioxidants selenium (found in Brazil nuts, salmon, pork, walnuts), Vitamin E (found in sunflower oil, avocado, olive oil), Vitamin C (found in citrus fruits, green peppers, broccoli), and CoQ10 (quality supplement). Men should also seek out foods rich in zinc (found in milk, almonds, yogurt) and folic acid, which can be found in fortified breads and cereals, legumes and leafy greens. Smoking Kills…. Sperm: TRUTH Whether it’s tobacco, marijuana or another substance, smoking is detrimental to everyone’s general health, and especially a man’s sperm production and sexual performance. Smoking introduces toxins into the body that can damage DNA in the developing sperm and can decrease a man’s fertility. For example, in tobacco there are

over 4,000 chemical compounds, including 43 carcinogens or poisons. These have been identified in high concentrations in semen samples of men who smoke. Nicotine, cocaine, marijuana, amphetamines all restrict blood flow to the testes and over time can cause permanent erectile dysfunction. Secondhand smoke also increases risk in women for miscarriage and infertility. Exercise Helps Sex Drive: TRUTH Exercise is important for stress management, weight and cholesterol management, healthy blood pressure, lowering risk for diabetes, and it can boost sex drive. Regular exercise increases muscle mass, which in turn helps to raise testosterone. Consistent activity is important for men and women, and it can be a great way for couples to improve their health together.

Shaun C. Williams, MD, and Carolyn Gundell, M.S., are part of the fertility team at Reproductive Medicine Associates of Connecticut (RMACT). Dr. Williams, who is board certified in both Reproductive Endocrinology and Obstetrics and Gynecology, has won several awards, including “Best Doctor in America” and Fairfield County “Top Doc.” Carolyn Gundell, M.S., has over 25 years of nutrition experience and helping patients with conditions associated with infertility, such as insulin resistance, diabetes and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). To find out more, please go to www.rmact. com. See ad on page 38.

However, extreme training that includes synthetic testosterone, which can be found in protein powders, supplements and anabolic steroids, is detrimental to a man’s own natural testosterone production. Testosterone boosting supplements should be avoided completely. Relaxing with a Few Drinks Helps: MYTH Alcohol use lowers testosterone levels and raises estrogen, therefore negatively impacting male fertility. There are numerous studies that show that men should have no more than two servings of alcohol per day and no more than seven drinks total per week. A serving size is 5 ounces of wine, 1.5 ounces of liquor, or a 12-ounce bottle of beer. Caffeine Is Only Problematic for Women: MYTH Like alcohol and tobacco, caffeine in very high doses can affect male infertility. We recommend no more than 300 mg per day for men, and 150 mg per day is best. A Keurig cup contains about 150 mg caffeine, whereas barrista coffee could contain up to 300 mg caffeine. Men have the power to improve their fertility, and they can also affect their partner’s fertility. When partners decide to support each other and make changes to their lifestyle habits together, they find greater pregnancy success. The power of two is infinite when it comes to practicing healthy dietary, exercise, and weight management routines and avoiding vices like smoking and alcohol. Armed with this knowledge, men can take control of their fertility potential and lead the way to successful family building.

Transition and Crisis as an Initiation By Lawrence Ford f you are going through a transition or crisis consider this. As unsettled, chaotic, and perhaps even as hopeless as things are right now there may be another way to look at what is happening.

I

• Maybe there is something deeper to look at beyond a miserable time that you can’t wait to get through? • Maybe what is happening to you right now is not all that bad. • Maybe what is happening is a gift beyond measure. • Maybe the dark place that you’re in is really an initiation. • Maybe this initiation is preparing you for something you have been waiting for your whole life. The majority of our American culture no longer recognize initiations as having much value; consequently most of us don’t have any context for these tough times beyond viewing them as something unproductive, a sign of weakness, or simply a painful nuisance. I know it is hard, if not impossible, to see a crisis as having any value when you are in the middle of it, but that is the way initiations work. You don’t understand what is happening as they rip you apart in a wrathful, relentless, loving way, with only one goal in mind…to break you down so you can be rebuilt to become the person you are meant to be in all your authentic power. If you are in the midst of a crisis and things seem hopeless, see if you can feel some truth in what I am saying. See if you can feel the slightest tickle in your belly letting you know there may be some truth in these words. How do you know if you are in crisis? When I speak of a transition or crisis I am referring to a time in your life that knocks you off your current path and forces you to reevaluate your existence. This could be the death of someone close to you, a medical diagnosis, a birth of a child, marriage, divorce, relationship challenges in general, depression or anxiety, kids heading off to college, retirement, financial challenges, finding yourself in an abusive situation, a near death experience, or just a time when you say, “I just can’t live this way anymore.”

You are here for a reason Your soul has a special song, a special vibration that is like a snowflake; no two are alike. Your job on this earth is to align your ‘being’ with your ‘doing.’ To a shaman, your soul is as real as your mind and body, and because of that it needs to be cared for. When our soul’s vibration is aligned with our physical existence, we are in authentic power. We are most powerful when we are on the path to recognizing the unique gift we have to share with the world. When we continue to do things that are not in alignment with whom we are, we operate out of synch like a car that bumps down the road because a tire is out of balance, or like a person walking around with a pebble in their shoe. Eventually these things eat at us. When a person is in this state of discord, it feels as though they are singing out of tune. The more people who are living this way, the more our world sounds like an entire chorus singing out of tune. When we live out of balance our soul is in a state of constant stress. Our bodies and minds become dis-eased. We get sick and depressed and lose meaning and purpose. The world around us is not immune to this noise and soon the ripple effect begins to disturb everything. The bees can’t find their way back to the hives and the oceans rise and become dark and murky. You are here for a reason and you know it; the problem is that so many of us have forgotten this …but our souls do not forget. In fact, life is one big conspiracy designed to guide us into our soul’s purpose and initiations are the way spirit wakes us up to remember. Initiations are hard Initiations come upon us sometimes when we least expect them and throw our lives into a whirlwind. Initiation can hurt so bad and feel so hopeless you can lose faith in the sun ever rising again. You can be brought to a place where life no longer seems worth living. And that is the point, I guess. I wish it could be different, I really do. But after going through my own initiation and from working with hundreds of courageous souls as they passed though tough times, I have come to understand that it is just how it works.

One thing that is in common with all of these life events is that they force you to change the way you perform your daily routine for a while, giving you the opportunity to wake up and remember you’re here for a reason.

When I was in Nepal many years ago I unwittingly entered into the beginning of my own initiation. One afternoon, a short shaman with a tall power looked up at me from my ribs and said:

“There is a purpose to life. Find the light inside you. Feed it, fire it up, and let it shine with abandon throughout the world; it will reflect upon you in ways unimagined” L. Ford

“You people…you wait until you are forty to “do” initiation, and when it comes you call it a mid-life crisis and run. Very funny, very sad.”

Natural Nutmeg - June 2015

Over the next seven years I was broken, opened, hopeless, enlightened, and ultimately retrieved a missing piece of my soul and was initiated into my found heritage as a shaman in the Bon lineage. Life is designed to initiate us into who we are, to help us heal old wounds that have kept us from being in our full power here on earth. But we have lost the value in the tradition of initiations and because of this when they come we don’t even know what they are. An initiation is designed to guide you, test you, and awaken you into living your purpose here on this earth. So how did we get lost? If we are asleep we cannot hear the call. The shamans tell us that we have fallen asleep. Our days drift by moving from A to B, B to A, with an occasional C thrown in for a vacation. We become like robots with our minds, believing in only the things we have witnessed in our experience through our five senses. We live in the past or future, but rarely in the moment. We dig ourselves into deep ruts that we convince ourselves we cannot escape from. These ruts imprison us with life’s obligations, with the dream of our culture, and become imprinted on our brains as well-worn neurological pathways. The shamans tell us this is the process of becoming domesticated. Like a river, energy inside the brain follows the path of least resistance, our thoughts flow with ease in accordance with the dream we have co-created here on this earth. We react to our children’s antics only to catch ourselves sounding like our mother, we eat ice cream for dessert because we were given it as a treat as a child, and we relate to money in the ways that we learned growing up. We have lost sight of the bigger picture. We travel in our canoe down the river of life back and forth until the path has worn the banks so tall that we can no longer see the horizon. The only view is the bank and everything that occurs in our little world. It’s all we know as we paddle each day. Until a crisis or transition comes with enough strength to kick our butts and stir us from our slumber.

that speak to you. Join a course. Make sure that what you find in any of these teachers feels authentic. Many people teach as a way of avoiding their own initiation, or find themselves so excited in the midst of their own initiation that they rush out to teach others before they are ready. Trust your instincts and demand to attract the teacher you deserve. Do not ignore the value of modern medicine; see a doctor, psychiatrist, or therapist. Getting help is not a sign of weakness. Waking up is worth it. The whole point of an initiation is too lose oneself. Dante in the Divine Comedy summed it up beautifully when he started with the words… “In the middle of the road of my life I awoke in a dark wood, where the true way was wholly lost.” Many traditions still send young children into the dark woods to fend for themselves as a way of initiating them into adulthood. One of the fundamental necessities of an initiation is to become lost. If you sent a young boy into the woods for a week to fend for himself, and then you gave him a flashlight and a map, it would kind of defeat the whole purpose. You are supposed to be lost right now. It is the way it works. What can I do now? It is true; the teacher arrives when the student is ready. Intend, attract, take action and get help. Reach out to people who can help guide you through these times. People who have been through their own initiations and can help you see the light when things are dark are always good people to learn from. Find books

Calling All Men… Take Your Game to the Next Level with Hypnosis By Lisa Zaccheo

T

he bulk of my clients are women, not because men don’t need the help, but because most men either don’t feel like they have time to schedule appointments, would rather silently power through their problems than talk to someone about them, or tend to be a bit more skeptical when it comes to the alternative healing arts. Whatever the reason, the end result is the same - men aren’t getting the help they need, which may be why they’re living shorter lives than their female counterparts by almost a decade. It’s Ok to Ask for Help We could get into the centuries-old argument of who has it harder, men or women. I know it’s challenging for most of us these days, but as a woman, my heart goes out to the men in my life. Not because they have it harder, but because they have not typically been taught that it’s OK to ask for help, or how to feel, manage or process their emotions. In fact, they’ve typically been taught that it’s not manly to ask for help or be emotional, with the possible exceptions of angry or aggressive. They have never been taught to feel their feelings, interpret their feelings or how to constructively express them. Instead, they’ve been taught to ignore them, stuff them away or deny them. That alone becomes a problem because feelings don’t just go away. Emotions are energy. Did you know that one of the definitions of emotion is “energy in motion”? We are intended to feel our feelings. They are nothing to be afraid of and, in fact, give us valuable information. Once they have been felt or acknowledged, we ask why they’re there and what they’re about, receive the message they’re delivering, accept them and then release them. They are designed to pass through and when we use healthy methods to feel and process, they do. When we deny, ignore or stuff away, we end up with large emotional reservoirs in our systems that become more and more difficult to manage. First and foremost, emotions take a lot of energy to suppress, which leaves us stressed and exhausted, and less able to cope. When we have large amounts of unprocessed emotions the littlest thing will cause our emotional reservoirs to overflow and we’ll react very strongly to issues or challenges that to the outsider appear to be no big deal, e.g., road rage or going a bit over the top when our sports team is losing. Suppressed emotions cause stress to our whole systems and affect us not only mentally and emotionally but physically as well. Did you know that somewhere between 85% and 90% of all disease is classified as function vs. organic, which means it has no physiological source, but rather results from what’s going on in the mental and emotional body? 85 to 90%! That’s staggering, but also great news because it means that we have the power within to change our mental and emotional states and heal. 24

No Support Network for Men Men also don’t tend to have deep conversations with their guy friends and too often haven’t had the time to maintain or develop a good network of male friends. And we women are sometimes not so great about encouraging our men to be vulnerable. We profess to want a “sensitive man,” but when our men melt down, deep inside we get a little freaked out because we want them to be strong so we feel safe and taken care of. So they often feel that they have no outlet. Us women, we talk about everything under the sun, with the possible exception of sports, cars and gadgets. Men’s conversations are all about “what I think” and women’s conversations are all about “what I feel.” Not that there’s anything wrong with that, it’s just not going to help unload all that emotional baggage that men have been collecting since childhood. So men are left holding the emotional bag, which to the body is akin to a powder keg with a dangerously short fuse that is held at arm’s length and is ready to blow at any moment. Let’s take a minute to review some of the effects of unprocessed emotions and how hypnosis can help. Effects of Unprocessed Emotions I’ll start with the obvious. Number one of the proverbial ten. STRESS, which to me is just another word for FEAR. Like Baskin Robbin’s, fear comes in at least 33 flavors, stress being one of them. Stress is essentially saying “I don’t think I’m good enough to handle everything that’s going on in my life, I’m afraid I’m going to drop the ball and fail.” For men, like many of us working women, there are a lot of balls to juggle. The pressures at work, doing a good job, trying to earn more in order to keep up with the rising costs of pretty much everything. Keeping the wife or girlfriend happy because “a happy wife is a happy life,” is not an easy task. As a wife myself I recognize that the bulls eye of happy seems to be a small and moving target because we women tend to by nature expect a lot of ourselves and therefore a lot of our men. Working to be a “good father” to the children, and the list goes on. And I know that some of the women who are reading this are saying, “It’s the same for me,” which I’m not denying - in some ways working mothers have even more balls to juggle. The only difference is that we women are better about asking for and receiving help, whether it’s from a professional or from what I refer to as a “co-pay” friend who is there to hear and accept all our feelings and know exactly what we need to hear in response.

Because of the high stress levels in today’s society, many men are really struggling with anxiety that they work so hard to keep under wraps to prevent them from feeling vulnerable. I worked with a male client just last week whose anxiety got so triggered that his body would try to vomit it out whenever he had to give a presentation. He could no longer hide it and finally decided in his desperation that he needed to get help. Two sessions later he’s presenting like a professional and feeling a world better to have all that fear up and out of his system. Men are losing sleep over the future and fearing the unknown. “Am I going to get that promotion; am I going to be able to keep my job with the younger, lowerpaid crop of workers coming into the field?” “Am I going to be able to keep up with the demands of life?” “Does my wife still love me?” Worried about how they’re going to remember everything they need to do, never mind get it done and done well. We women are typically better at multitasking, not that this is a good thing when it comes to the effects on the brain. Most men do better single tasking, which is actually healthier, but can be more stressful when there are a multitude of things that need to get done simultaneously these days. (As I interrupt my writing on this snowy spring Saturday to move the laundry to the dryer, and to get some dusting done while waiting for the spin cycle to complete.) High levels of prolonged stress or anxiety have countless effects on the body; causing insomnia, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, heart issues, decreased sex drive or erectile dysfunction and even cancer to name just a few. Anxiety can also lead to depression, lowered sense of self-esteem, which in turn can cause some men to shut down. Stress has taken a toll on many a marriage and can cause too many to turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms such as smoking, alcohol, drugs, gambling, porn, sports or video game addictions, affairs and others. The Benefits of Hypnosis I know you get the picture. You may in fact be one of those men or one of his loved ones who are living in the picture, which is a very uncomfortable place to be. The good news is that hypnosis can absolutely help and can do so far quicker and much easier than many of the other traditional therapies that are available. It’s actually perfectly suited for men, because they don’t really want to talk about things, they want to change things.

If you’re a wife or girlfriend, you’ve probably experienced that phenomenon first hand. You come home and just want to talk to your man about your day and some of the challenges you’ve encountered and his primary focus is how he can fix it for you. It’s the same for himself, so hypnosis is a perfect fit. Aside from the initial intake, which takes about 30 minutes, the balance of the work is about draining that overflowing emotional reservoir where unprocessed emotions from way back have been stored. In most cases this can be done without even having to tap into the emotions it contains. Then, monitoring the changes that come as a result and continuing to focus on creating positive shifts until the goals have been reached, or in many cases exceeded. In the process, many men notice that their fear and confusion around emotions disappear, that they become much more comfortable feeling and working with their emotions; and as a result, all aspects of life get better. They are able to make better decisions, because the decisions are made from the heart as well as the head, vs. just by the head or as a reaction to the fear that was in the heart. Confidence levels are boosted and when they feel better about themselves they tend to take better care of themselves in regard to their relationship with food. And because they’re feeling better, many of the destructive coping mechanisms they were using to stuff down those uncomfortable feelings are no longer needed. It’s a win-win all around. I’ve worked with men from all over the globe on every imaginable issue, most of which come from the root fear of, “I don’t think I’m good enough.” Whether it be divorce recovery; guilt from having an affair in a desperate attempt to feel loved and good enough; performance issues of all kinds including sports, job or performance of the more personal kind; insomnia; gambling addiction; alcohol abuse; anger management; you name it I’ve helped thousands of men connect to their inner power to resolves issues that they thought were unresolvable. In addition, I’ve helped highly successful men become even more so. Because here’s a secret: the men in this society who are considered the most successful are not free of their own challenges and did not get where they are all by themselves. They were smart enough to know that they needed help.

I love this quote by Rona Barrett: “The healthy and strong individual is the one who asks for help when he needs it.” The most successful businessmen have Executive Coaches, or better yet, Hypno- Coaches to help sort through the clutter. To decide which balls to keep juggling themselves, which balls to delegate to others and which to let happily drop and roll away. They recognize that their self-care is paramount to their success, because without health and strength they cannot reach their full potential. Whether it be help choosing the healthiest mental diet, healing old emotional wounds that when triggered have been their Achilles heel, or working on physical well-being by developing healthy habits to control stress, achieve balance and encourage strength. In addition, hypnosis is phenomenal for tapping into the other 90% of the mind’s capacity to develop the highest level life and business strategies and navigate the most challenging of “personnel” issues, whether at work or home and acquire quite the competitive edge. All of which positively affect their personal and professional bottom line. So if you’re a man who has been being “tough” and thinking “I need to do it all by myself, getting help is a sign of weakness,” please put those thoughts down and pick up the phone instead. And if you’re one of those women who is watching her man suffer, pick up the phone for him, many have before you; and most have been thrilled that they did, for their man, their families and their future. If you’re anything like me, I want my guy to be happy and healthy for a long time to come. The Healing Benefits of Olive Oil

By: Lynne Bellemare

T

here are many different kinds of fats: saturated, polyunsaturated, and monounsaturated; and our body needs a mixture of healthy fatty acids in the diet in a harmonious balance of 30% saturated, 10% polyunsaturated, and 60% monounsaturated. One such healthy fatty acid is olive oil which is extracted from the fruit of the evergreen tree, Olea europea. This golden color oil which has been consumed since 2500BC, has been used for a multitude of things such as lamp illumination, a body cleanser, a natural medicine, and an aphrodisiac. Olive oil, a monounsaturated fat which is primarily composed of oleic acid, is an Omega-9. It is full of natural antioxidants such as Vitamin E and has anti-inflammatory effects as well as antiviral and antibacterial properties. Also, olive oil lowers our risk of heart disease and slows down the absorption of food to help stabilize our blood sugar for proper energy regulation. It provides a source of slow burning energy and makes up our cell membranes. Furthermore, it is needed for the absorption of the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. It makes food taste good, serves as a protective lining for the body’s organs and is imperative to managing the inflammation process. It is also interesting to note that our brain is comprised of 60% fat. Therefore, it is important to feed it with quality fats for nourishment. Our brain needs fat to function properly. Fat does not make you fat. However, if you are trying to lose weight, it is best to go easy on the olive oil. A study which was published in the journal The Lancet in 1994 shows that olive oil can contribute to weight gain. It appears the monounsaturates like those found in olive oil are the culprit. It’s the way the chemical structure is designed as a longer chain fatty acid.

When looking for olive oil, look for a pure oil - one that is not blended with other cheaper oils. Some people even buy olive oil right from a family run olive farm in Greece which is distributed in the United States. The olives are hand-picked from the tree and cold-pressed. Olive oil can be expensive and it’s best to find one in a darkcolored glass bottle. If you buy olive oil in a tin, make sure it’s BPA-free and then transfer some olive oil - enough for two weeks - into a dark-colored glass bottle and use from that bottle. The light can be damaging to this beautiful healing oil because it degrades the quality and causes free radicals to form. Store olive oil in a dark cool place or even in the refrigerator. To keep the olive oil fresh, be sure to put the cap on immediately to protect it from as much air as possible as air can oxidize the oil. Once you have found a quality olive oil, use it with care even though it is relatively stable. Monounsaturated fats like olive oil are more delicate than saturated fats because it only has one double bond. If you want all of the healing nutrients available from the olive oil, use it cold. If you do cook with it, sauté quickly and lightly. Do not let the olive oil bubble as it can be damaged and form free radicals. Instead, you could use a saturated fat such as leaf lard or butter to cook with. If you want the flavor and nutrients of olive oil and to balance your fats, drizzle some olive oil on after the food is done cooking by simply turning off the oven and pouring a little olive oil on the cooked food. Then, shut the door for a few moments to keep the integrity of the beneficial phenols which are anti-inflammatory.

quality oil that you are nourishing your body with - eating as close to nature as possible and avoiding denatured foods. Here are a few ideas to use olive oil cold: Drizzle olive oil on some homemade hummus (not store bought because of the poor quality of oil that it’s made with), or drizzle on a homemade salad with some raw apple cider vinegar and fresh herbs. You can also make some avocado toast by toasting some homemade sprouted bread and topping it with chunks of organic avocado, a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of unrefined salt. You could also make a homemade pizza. Be sure to make the dough yourself because store bought dough can have low quality oils and remember to blind bake the pizza crust with a quality saturated fat which is safe for baking. Also, use sprouted flour for your dough to make sure that you are receiving all of the nutrients. Then, add a little olive oil on the pizza after it comes out of the oven to make it even more delicious. In conclusion, there is no absolute truth. Your guiding principal is to eat as close to nature as possible, for the less processed and heat-treated the food is, the more nutritious it will be. Olive oil - elegant and healing - plays a major role in supporting your health. Lynne Bellemare, a student of the Nutritional Therapy Association, is working towards becoming a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner.

The less processed and treated, the more nutritious olive oil becomes. Its ideal use is cold. You are invited to use the olive oil unheated to not risk damaging the high www.NaturalNutmeg.com

Monterey, Carmel and the Amazing Big Sur… the Ultimate American Road Trip

I

was afraid this would happen. I’ve been longing to visit the Monterey bay area for what seems like forever. You know how sometimes you read about a place and you just know that you are going to fall in love with it before you even get there. Well, that’s Monterey and Carmel for me. And yes…I did fall in love! Monterey offers the ultimately iconic California experience and it’s easy to see why the drive to Big Sur has been voted the top road trip in the United States. The coastline is just breathtaking. There are an endless number of things to do here. The drive is a must, of course. But there’s also the shops and attractions of Cannery Row, the art galleries of Carmel, sipping handcrafted wines at tucked-away tasting rooms where the winemaker might just be the person pouring, surfing or paddleboard lessons, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, or play 18 holes at legendary golf courses. It just doesn’t end. Plus, the amazing Esalen Institute is based in Big Sur, where you can take fascinating courses on consciousness studies. I might just end the trip now and stay here! We checked into the beautiful Portola Hotel & Spa in Monterey located steps away from unique shopping, dining, Fisherman’s Wharf and a great running/biking trail right along the water where you can see Harbor Seals and Sea Lions lounging on rocks. Our room was nautically-themed and spacious with a patio and cabana, a luxuriously comfortable king size bed and of course Green from Natura room amenity products and packages which are made from rapidly renewable material and are bio-degradable. Monterey is extremely pet friendly and we noticed many guests with their dogs in the hotel – you can even have a dog bed, bowl and bone for Fido! The Portola Hotel & Spa is Silver LEED® Certified, becoming the first “Green” Hotel in central California, the third Hotel in California and the sixth Hotel in the U.S. to attain this high level in “Existing Building” Category. Their list of ecofriendly initiatives is long, but some of the more unique things that I thought they were implementing are:

28

Natural Nutmeg - June 2015

• Their onsite restaurant, Jack’s, carpet is made from sheep wool and the backing is a natural jute and latex, all of which are rapidly renewable materials and the carpet is 100% compostable at the end of its useful life • Landscaping featuring native and drought tolerant vegetation and drip irrigation controlled by weather conditions • Actively participate in the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch® Program, designed to raise awareness about the importance of making ocean-friendly seafood choices • Peter B’s Brewpub changed operations to save over 41,000 gallons of water a year and recycles mash from the brewing process to local farmers and growers • The Hotel produces hot water with cogeneration which simultaneously generates electricity on site We set out that day to explore Cannery Row and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Through the boom and bust of the whaling and sardine industries, to structural and economic despair followed by restoration and re-development, the tale of Cannery Row continues to fascinate people. You can pretty much find just about anything here from touristy shops to wine tasting rooms to brewpubs and more. The Aquarium is a great way to spend a few hours, especially with the kids, as they have feeding times for sharks, sea otters and fish which was exciting to watch. That night we headed into Pacific Grove, which is a cute little seaside town. We ate at Passionfish – one of the best meals of the trip so far. Ted Walter, a Classic French-trained chef, worked in restaurants across the country before perfecting his own unique style and opening Pacific Grove's Passionfish with his wife Cindy in 1997. Since then, Ted has earned a national reputation for his simple, inspired cuisine, incorporating fresh, organic produce and sustainable seafood. He is also an active advocate for the sustainable seafood movement, using his talent and his restaurant as platforms for delivering sustainable seafood education. Passionfish was the first in Monterey County to be certified as a Green Restaurant. The halibut with tangerine-tamarind coulis and provençal yellow

squash was exquisite and the Wild King salmon with bacon-onioncorn braise, roasted tomato and lemon jam was the best salmon we’ve had yet. The next day we ventured into Carmel, which I fell in love with immediately. If you don’t think you’ll ever get to the Amalfi coast in Italy, then you have to come to Carmel as it’s about the closest thing to it I’ve seen. All Italian style architecture; the shops, galleries, tasting rooms, and restaurants are beautifully designed with many tucked away in cozy little courtyards. Just a short walk from town down to the beach, you can see one of the most amazing sunsets you’ll probably see in your lifetime. We dined at Basil in their outdoor patio area – when it got a little chilly, they had lovely fleece blankets and gas fireplaces to keep you warm. The menu is based on seasonal and locally grown organic ingredients; fresh, wild sustainable seafood and creative local California cuisine. Chef Peters’ passion for Farm to Table food and being sustainably responsible made Basil the first Certified Green Restaurant in Monterey County. Don’t miss the shaved brussel sprout salad with hazelnuts and the local burrata – some of the best I’ve had. Our last day we drove the classic 17-Mile Drive through Pebble Beach – unbelievably stunning cliffs and shoreline. So much so that it actually costs $10 to drive the route – but it was well worth it. There were many places you could pull off and take photos – which might not do it justice, but you’ll still want to remember. We headed down to Big Sur and were lucky enough to see a whale breaching out in the ocean. Unlike the east coast – because you’re driving on the side of cliffs here, you can see the ocean for miles and miles. We stopped at Nepenthe for a glass of wine and the sunset and I

loved their open air pavilion. In Greek, Nepenthe means "isle of no care," a place to find surcease from sorrow. People have come to this place, not just from the ridge-tops and canyons, but from all over the world. The cool and eclectic Phoenix Shop grew out of the traveling merchants who brought their colorful wares. Famous even before it opened for its unique architecture and incandescent views, Nepenthe is known today for its family hospitality, legendary guests, and irresistible "Ambrosiaburger." We ended the day a few miles down the road at the Big Sur Roadhouse, which features Chef Matt Glazer's fresh take on classic California cuisine with a Cajun twist. The seasonal menu is filled with locally sourced organic ingredients. Also, not to be missed, San Francisco designer Steve Justrich's "homegrown modernism" has transformed the Roadhouse into a truly unique and fitting environment for dining in Big Sur. It’s a great place to relax and dine, especially on their open air patio with couches and fire pits. If that wasn’t enough, the Portola Hotel sponsors the annual Monterey Beer Garden event, which happened to be occurring the weekend we were there. Hosted by the first craft Monterey brewery, Peter B's Brewpub, this beer enthusiast event features the top central California regional breweries. We got to meet the actual brewers of many breweries and sample from Stone, Boulder Creek, Santa Cruz Mountain, Uncommon Brewers and more. It was a great day with live music, lots of food and delicious beer tastings. What an awesome way to end our fantastic Monterey experience! Visit www.portolahotel.com. A Romantic Getaway at the Inn on First in Napa

W

hen you think of Napa Valley, what comes to mind? Images of picturesque rolling hills with miles of vineyards, world class restaurants with food and wine to die for, pampering at exquisite spas, luxurious resorts and quaint bed and breakfasts, right? Well, I bet your first thought isn’t that you would find eco-friendly lodging there, or if you did that you would actually want to stay there with all of the tempting alternatives. Think again… In May of 2007 Jim Gunther and Jamie Cherry of San Francisco, CA, took the reins as the new innkeepers of The Inn on First, a contemporary bed and breakfast located in the heart of Napa. Jim and Jamie brought a fresh look and fervor to excel in service to their guests. What distinguishes their deluxe bed and breakfast from any other in Napa Valley is not only the touch of San Francisco style they have added to the decor, and their focus on hospitality as a personalized gift to their guests, but their commitment to contribute to an improved way of living and environmental consciousness. I wrote an article on the Inn on First in 2011 and it was just as amazing this time as I remembered it to be. Jim Gunther and Jamie Cherry have truly outdone themselves with this bed and breakfast. If you are looking for a romantic getaway, this is the place. Jim makes all of the breakfasts from scratch with deliciously unique food and has over 130 selections in his repertoire. In fact – he even keeps track of what you had when you stayed there, so that you never have the same breakfast twice! From the moment you step through the doors of The Inn on First, you are greeted with a feeling of coming home. Jim and Jamie help orchestrate your memorable stay in the wine country, and it's their combined talents that shape your experience. Situated on a quiet street in downtown Napa, this American craftsman style B&B offers luxury, pampering, and peaceful surroundings, plus you can feel good that you’re staying at a property that is environmentally conscious. We stayed in the Noble Vineyard suite with gold and red toned décor, which has a luxuriously comfortable king bed, private entrance, gas fireplace, large seating area, whirlpool tub, twin sinks and spacious rainfall shower. The best part…there is NO TV! You have your own private balcony that is hidden under the branches 30

of a large oak tree with a small cafe table and 2 chairs. Other cool things for your use while staying at the Inn…stainless steel water bottles and a picnic basket equipped with everything you need. In 2014 they were one of thirteen businesses in the State of California to receive a Climate Leader Award from CoolCalifornia.org that is funded by the California Environmental Protection Agency. This award recognizes California small businesses that demonstrate exceptional climate change management practices and communication. Other green practices they’ve implemented include: • Low-flow water sources and tank-less water heater • Kitchen waste composting, Garden composting • Re-usable glassware instead of paper or plastic as well as stainless steel water bottles replacing plastic water bottles • In-room recycle bins • In-room climate control. Each room has a personal air-conditioning/cooling unit, heat source, and ceiling fans with occupancy sensors which allow for energy savings in unoccupied rooms • Luxury Toiletries from Gilchrist & Soames. The BeeKind® Collection features formulations, which contain no parabens, phthalates, petrol-derived ingredients, mineral oil, urea, DEA, TEA or propylene glycol, and use recyclable packaging and are free of any artificial colors or dyes • Household natural cleaning products that protect both the environment and the housekeepers who use them • Sheet and Towel Service that is certified green • House-made snacks which reduces unnecessary packaging/shipping; therefore cuts back on the pollution that is derived from automobile based distribution & paper waste • Food storage bags that are composed of clear 100% Home-Compostable cellulose product made from wood fiber that causes nearly zero environmental impact • Natural cleaning & gardening products are used to keep rooms and grounds in pristine condition Interestingly enough, we met a couple at breakfast that was spending their honeymoon at the Inn on First – I couldn’t imagine a more perfect place! Expect the Unexpected at the Captain Fairfield Inn and Pomegranate Inn

S

ettled in the 1600's and a long time ship building mecca, the Kennebunkport river banks saw five-masted ships and schooners making their way down the river on their way to the sea. Sea captains built fine mansions, many of which are preserved today as lovely inns with antique charm. Over 100 years ago, this part of the Maine Coast first became a resort destination - today it's "the place to be all year."

Food, wine and craft beer are definitely an essential part of the Captain Fairfield Inn experience. The next morning we were treated to a multicourse breakfast of raspberry scones, fresh fruit and gourmet scrambled eggs. In the evening, the Inn offers an eclectic wine and beer list with small plates (all for purchase), blending local artisan breads with cheeses from the US and Europe and Italian salami, olives and olive oils, and a variety of fruits. We hated to leave the Captain Fairfield, but we were excited to see our next stop at the Pomegranate Inn, set in a quiet neighborhood in the Western Promenade Historic District. Expect the unexpected is the theme of this hotel collection and the Pomegranate did not disappoint! Sculpture, art, quirky furniture and fabrics create a gallery unlike any other hotel in Portland. The features combine in an eclectic play of color and texture that surprise, entertain, and then encourage you to kick back and unwind. At this upbeat inn the goal is to both charm you and exceed your expectations. There's also a guest parlor and a chic lounge where local art is showcased. Eight stunning B&B guestrooms provide luxury and comfort for a romantic get-away, a haven for the business traveler, or a destination for a few days of art, dining and shopping. We stayed in Room 4 which had beautiful high ceilings, a gas fireplace and floor to ceiling windows to allow plenty of light. The walls were decorated with a lovely hand-painted bird motif and it was so unique I couldn’t take my eyes off it! And, of course I was happy to see they offer ecofriendly shower and bath amenities. One thing I love about staying in B&Bs is the amazing and creative gourmet breakfasts you receive! And it was no exception at the Pomegranate. Our first course was fruit and pastries fresh from the oven. The main course was poached eggs with capers, or blueberry pancakes all made with fresh, seasonal and local ingredients. If the temptation to sleep in wins, they’ll bring a breakfast basket to your door!

Set in the heart of historic Kennebunkport, Maine, one of these old mansions is now home to the Captain Fairfield Inn. The Inn was designed in keeping with the grand heritage of the 1813 Federalstyle mansion but we were excited to see they’ve incorporated bold modern decor and the luxuries a modern traveler desires and expects in a relaxing seaside getaway. Located in a quiet neighborhood overlooking the river green and just one block from the Kennebunk River, lively Dock Square and Kennebunkport harbor, the Inn features beautifully landscaped grounds and gardens where you can relax and enjoy the ocean breezes while enjoying a glass of wine and their fresh-baked, sea salt chocolate chip cookies which were to die for. Seven guest rooms and two suites, including the vineyard vines® Suite (clothiers to the chic and preppy coastal crowd) and plush Lark Suite (with a dreamy bath) provide guests a tranquil spot to end the day and peacefully drift off to sleep. Upon arrival we were handed our own personal iPad to use during our stay that was already loaded with local restaurants, shopping and activities. What a great idea as usually I’m spending hours scouring the internet to find places to eat and things to do! We stayed in the Parker room, which had a beautiful gas fireplace and an iPod docking station. The room also features a private bath with an old fashioned Revival soaking tub and shower. 32

SUCCESS

MATTERS. FOR EVERYONE. When it comes to building a family and overcoming infertility, everyone’s story is different. But from across Connecticut and beyond, our hopeful parents all share a single goal: success. With IVF delivery rates 20% above the national average, Reproductive Medicine Associates of Connecticut helps hopeful parents build their families...one story at a time. Start your story with us today. Call 800-865-5431 or visit www.rmact.com. Source: 2013 SART Report; Thawed Embryos From Non Donor Oocytes. Please note that a comparison of clinic success rates may not be meaningful because a patient’s medical characteristics, treatment approaches and entrance criteria for ART may vary from clinic to clinic. BERNIE

By Bernie Siegel, MD

Don’t Hide Because You’re Different

W

hat would you hang in the lobby of schools and public buildings with a sign over it which reads; “Look at how beautiful and meaningful life is.” If you have been through a major loss or life threatening illness you are far more likely to say a mirror than if you haven’t had that experience. We are all so involved with our imperfections that we lose track of our divine nature and origin. When I spoke before several hundred personal health trainers who were the most attractive and fit group I have ever seen, their responses were: rainbows, baby pictures, or flowers. After several minutes I realized they have a problem with their self image too and that’s probably why they are doing what they are doing. Trying to be perfect...which will never happen. We are all perfectly imperfect to begin with. I finally stopped them and said the answer is a mirror. That created a silent thoughtful moment. I recall a young woman admitted to the hospital to be force fed. She was anorexic and starving herself to death. I asked her to draw a picture of herself. When I show people a slide of her drawing and ask why was she admitted to the hospital most yell out, “She’s pregnant.” A few wise health care professionals say, “Anorexic.” Think of what we do to ourselves by being critical of who we are, what we look like and more. Learn from Lassie again. Our pets never request a shampoo or grooming because they just don’t look well or because guests are coming over. So relax and accept your body for the gift it is. The problem is we don’t love our bodies and create much disease and disability because of our dislike of ourselves. The body knows how to heal and tries to protect you and keep you well as best it can. But do you nourish it properly and exercise it and love and respect it as the gift that it is? I doubt most of you do until some disaster strikes. You never hear about Helen Keller complaining. Learn from her, the children and the animals. They know who they are and what makes them complete and it is not the number of parts they have. I just learned of a premature infant born with a malignancy in her foot. Arielle had her foot amputated and home she went after months in the hospital, proud of herself and her body and not fearful of showing off her stump. Her mom has written a book, “Arielle’s Footprint”, because of what she has learned from her. The following is my foreword to her book. 40

Natural Nutmeg - June 2015

Footprints have always fascinated me. Every winter as I walk through the snow, many times I benefit from the footprints of others who have walked before me. At other times their footprints are frozen and difficult to step in as I struggle in my attempt to follow them. I learned from my experience that there are times in life where I need to create my own path, let some one assist me when the going was tough, or crawl. When you are willing to face life’s adversities and the obstacles they create you can choose to learn how to climb or stop living. We are all unique and need to find our way through life rather than hide because we are different. I think that Arielle’s footprints are a guide to all of us as we make our journey through life. I can recall a child with a congenital problem, who was my patient; ask me, “Why am I different?” I answered, “Because it makes you beautiful.” He responded with a knowing smile. Children and animals understand that being complete is not about having the correct number of body parts, but about how we live. A veterinarian I know said she was able to get through body changing surgery by thinking about the dogs she operated on. She said, “I can amputate a leg or jaw and they wake up and lick their owner’s faces. They know they are here to love and be loved and teach us a few things.” We are here to live and learn and see that what is evil is not the difficulty someone must live with, but to not respond with compassion to the person experiencing it. For many, Dr. Bernard Siegel-or Bernie, as he prefers to becalled-needs no introduction. He has touched many lives all overthe Planet. In 1978, he reached a national and then international audience when he began talking about patient empowerment and the choice to live fully and die in peace. As a physician who has cared for and counseled innumerable people whose mortality has been threatened by illness, Bernie embraces a philosophy of living and dying that stands at the forefront of the medical ethics and spiritual issues our Society grapples with today. Read Bernie’s regular blog posts on his website where you will also find his books, articles, and CDs: http://www.berniesiegelmd.com. See ad on page 39.

WHY AN ORGANIC MATTRESS IS RIGHT FOR YOU

While we sleep, our immune system recovers and prepares for the day ahead. If your mattress is filled with airborne allergens and chemical toxins, your immune system will battle these rather than

repair itself. Regular bedding & mattresses are laden with polyurethane foam, toxic flame retardants, and water or stain resistant chemicals.

When we found out what was in our mattress, my husband said, ‘Every mother in the world should know what they are putting their child on at night.’ That was 2004, and the Clean Bedroom was born. —Chris Chamberlin, Co-founder
